Hot Star Fried Chicken is a great Taiwanese street food vendor in the heart of Melbourne. They sell fried chicken, fried mushrooms and even fried squid! Their signature item is the large fried chicken. It’s huge, the size of my head and sells for just $9. The meat is so juicy and tender. You can choose from 6 salt flavours – (Salt and Pepper, Chicken Salt, Chilli, Cajun, Plum & Cumin.) I also got a serve of fried mushrooms. These were so succulent, with a great crunchy batter. I’ve been visiting this stall for years. It’s fast, cheap and delicious. A must-visit for Melbourne’s fried chicken lovers.

Great fried chicken with super tasty sides. The cutlet is delicious and normally doesn’t come with too many rib bones. The sides are all great with sweet potato fries and the fried mushrooms my favourite. Much faster cooking time compared to similar places nearby so if you are in a hurry this is the place to go.

The salt and pepper squids were excellent I also really liked the chicken until I found this HUGE annoying bone that make this snack not very easy to eat outside Unfortunately this bone was ridiculously oversized ... would be perfect without

Refused to serve me due to “being busy”. I was willing to wait and didn’t rush, bad attitude as well. Weren’t even close to closing and yelled at us.

The worst fried chicken ever, meat is not fresh at all!!! It stinks 🤮 And the service attitude is very bad too.. Used to eat every time come down to city, but not going to buy anymore.

I got some chicken here, it was pretty good but not amazing. I enjoyed it but couldn’t eat the whole thing. Worth a try but I would probably get kfc next time.

I love hotstar large fried chicken, I usually order cheese and cajun flavor. But this time, I tried the chicken salt flavor just to try. It is too much salty.. too much. I know its chicken salt flavor but all I can taste in a bite is salt. this comment is for improvement purpose. I still love my chicken in cheese.

Big piece of chicken but took a long time. No way close to what the original in Taiwan is like. The dole actually smells a bit funny and overall taste pretty flavorless. Didn’t enjoy it at all and costs $9 which is pretty overpriced for what you get. Won’t be buying this ever again.

We love the hot star chicken!!! We ordered the large chicken with sweet potato fries. The chicken was delicious, we chose chicken salt as our flavouring. The chicken was huge, tasty and moist. The fries were equally delicious. We will definitely order from here again.

Moreover, the chicken is prepared in a hygienic way, so that means, there's not a chance to feel sick to eat this amazing fried chicken unlike KFC. <br/><br/>The end result of the fried chicken is that the chicken is soft, tender, juicy yet the right amount of crunch on the outside, it's hard not to fall for this delectable giant fried chicken. Cooked to perfection and whenever I walk past their stores, it satiates my taste bud, thus making me drool. Trust me, hotstar will definitely make you addicted to it but in the good way. Foodies of Melbourne and new tourists to this city, hotstar is definitely a great meal option for you.

Got combo d which is the big chicken piece plus the fried mushroom with chicken salt and drink, and the combo b which is the chicken bites and supposing sweet potato fries but not sure why they gave us curly fries instead. The fried mushroom was so so salty with the seasoning. Lucky I asked for no seasoning on the chicken bites but still you can taste the saltiness.

Always on the lookout for something new to try, this Taiwanese fried chicken caught our eye walking down Swanston Street. There are a few of these booths across the city and suburbs, and there is a great reason why.<br/><br/>The booth area is clean and tidy, and the staff and service are excellent. It takes about 5-10 minutes to wait for your food to be cooked, but it's definitely worth the wait. We had a large serve of the popcorn style chicken with a spicy coating, and they were outstanding. So much better than anything you will get at KFC, these tasty little morsels are full of flavour and incredibly juicy. There was also some tasty greens included which were als flavoursome. This chicken is totally addictive, service is fabulous and I can understand why this franchise is peppered all over the city.

We grabbed a serve of chicken pop on our way to dinner after wanting to try this for a while now but not really up to the massive fried chicken as we'll be eating again soon.<br/><br/>Luckily there wasn't much of a line and after waiting for a bit we got our chicken pop served freshly fried with chicken salt. The chicken pieces was tender and juicy coated in a thin crunchy batter. With the added salt, it hit home for flavours so definitely comparable to some of the better chicken pop we had in Taiwanese restaurant. If only there was more in the serve as they were gone in an instance.

Worth it! juicy and succulent, crispy on the outside tender on the inside, just perfect! It was so good I was biting off the bone at the bus stop shamelessly ...

... We've seen hot star many times and agreed perhaps it was a try once thing (along with the deep fried corn dog and mars bar) but never actually gotten around to it, though today with the 50% original slab almost the size of my face it was an offer too good to refuse.

Hot star fried chicken is always a winner for me . Situated right next to my favourite Gong Cha , you really can’t go wrong . The chicken is always crunchy , juicy and tender and seasoned to perfection . I also love the deep fried mushrooms 🤭

Hotstar fried chicken is always a must for a hungry night.. I always love their chicken and the batter that they coat it with.. I had their salt and pepper.. quality was standard and did not vary too much from what we had in the past..<br/>And yes it is ridiculously oversized for a piece of chicken..

Really good greasy chicken. I like to mix and match the flavours. The service is pretty eh, I've never had a great experience as staff always seem kind of rude and bothered by having to serve us which isn't the most pleasing thing.

Paid like seven bucks for a tiny serving of popcorn chicken, that wasn't even crunchy, and with a very weak chicken salt seasoning. I don't get the popularity, maybe I need to not get the popcorn chicken in future (but would have thought this would be hard to get wrong).

One of my guilty pleasures is Hot Star fried chicken. The hoards of Asian students across Melbourne's CBD lining up for Hot Star cannot be wrong! Literally a chicken (including bones) flattened, crumbed and deep fried. Think chicken parma but you eat it with your hand. I like the garlic salt and chilli seasoning. For $8.50, it's a tasty snack.

Service was good, chicken was crispy good quality and tender. However was quite pricey but good for the occasional treat! Will come back for special occasions another time!

Having had an amazing experience with their signature hot star chicken at their Springvale branch a few months ago, I was excited to try and replicate it here in the CBD. <br/><br/>I ordered 2 serves of the crunchy chicken pop - one with chilli and the other with chicken salt. Both were underwhelming. The chicken pieces were soggy and there was definitely no popping going on in my mouth. <br/><br/>Service was quite disappointing with staff more interested in catching up on each other's gossip rather than filling the orders in a timely fashion.....maybe that's why the chicken was soggy! Had too much expectation on the xxl large chicken/hot star chicken. Thought it was chicken breast, but its not had bones(?) 😓 the flour.. just okay. seasoned well. But not bad not good just ok. I haven’t tried Hot Star large fried chicken in ages, so we decided to drop by. We ordered two Hot Star Chicken- one was salt and pepper flavoured, the other chicken salt flavoured (apparently you can also have both flavours on one chicken). Both were nice, but I personally preferred the chicken salt better. The fried chicken was crispy on the outside, and was very juicy inside, which made it enjoyable to eat. However, after a while, it became less exciting and a bit tiring to make my way through (because it’s so BIG). <br/>The waiting time may take a while because they make it to order, and there was only one staff member when we visited. <br/>I feel like the Hot Star chicken is good to have once in a while, but I probably won’t come back too regularly. Although, I might try the sweet potato fries or crispy mushroom next time!

Finally got to try this insanely popular street food. I’ve heard that it is crazy popular in China so I wanted to try their “over sized” chicken. <br/><br/>Ordered: over sized chicken $9<br/><br/>Review:<br/>I picked the chicken salt flavour but they also offer chilly, Cajun etc. the chicken was massive and I had people on streets ask me what it was and where the place was. The chicken itself on the outside was crispy and on the inside it was juicy. But it was just fried chicken?¿ like apart from the fact it was MASSIVE I think it’s just a regular fried chicken. It did get overwhelming once we got up to half the size.

小学初中时期鸡排可是超级火的，来了猫本大半年都没有吃过，今天经过就尝试一下～因为鸡排我比较爱吃芝士爆浆的那种，这里木有所以就点了一些小吃，鸡翅，鸡米花，和鱿鱼须，都是超级好吃了，酥脆酥脆的，而且量也很足。可以选3种口味，反正就随便选啦。没有雷！！！看别的貌似都是买的鸡排，确实好大一块，空气中香味弥漫，诱人诱人。鸡排配奶茶，简直就是，无比幸福！

I don’t understand what’s so good about this place? The chicken coating wasn’t cooked properly and was like jelly falling off the chicken. Wouldn’t really go back anytime soon. Could have just been a product of a busy rush but nevertheless, I didn’t finish the chicken 😫

I ordered the Big Bite Hotstar Chicken.  The chicken is not greasy despite having been deep fried in batter.  The portion appears larger than it actually is because it's flat like a piece of chicken schnitzel.  <br/><br/>At lunchtime on a weekday, it took 6 minutes for the order of two Hotstar Chickens to be ready.  <br/><br/>If you like fried stuff but don't mind the wait, this place is definitely an option for a takeaway snack.

Got the fried chicken which is an extra large thin piece of chicken with batter. We had the spicy and chicken salt flavour. It was tasty and good value for money. Would recommend sharing as it is huge! Felt a bit thirsty afterwards.

Just standing there and not even taking orders. Seriously rude, at least take the order and then do what you need to do so customers at least know you acknowledge that we're here.

Primarily, it sells well fried, large specially seasoned chicken pieces - two handfulls to eat. Among other fried foods, this one might have some of the tastiest crisp to it. <br/>Not salty, but a unique well defined spiced batter which makes it distinctly different. <br/><br/>A bit of a gimmick, but in the company of others can be better enjoyed. <br/><br/>It's own hot star. <br/><br/>

Popping out of the cinema, everyone was full from popcorn and I still needed dinner! Dropped by Hot Star for a quick bite (it was already 9pm), the chicken schnitzel is freshly fried to order and it's the star attraction here.<br/><br/>Chicken was beautifully bubbly crispy along with their addictive chicken salt, I think it's on par with their salt and pepper. It's always consistently succulent and you know it's the real deal when you hit the chicken bones near the bottom. Fried chicken all day every day!

After years of walking past the long queues out the front of Hot Star, I finally tried it for the first time to see what all the fuss is about. <br/><br/>The chicken is cooked fresh to order and you can choose from a small range of flavours. Initially I was amazed by the size, it’s huge. The chicken was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. It comes in an easy hold to package thats convenient when you’re on the go. <br/><br/>Overall I enjoyed the chicken although I found it a bit weird just having it on its own without any sides. If you’ve never tried Taiwanese fried chicken before you should definitely give Hot Star a go.<br/><br/>Overall I rate Hot Star Large Fried Chicken ⭐️⭐️⭐️ out of 5 stars.

Got the chilli flavoured chicken bites! They were delicious as usual, although I'd like it with a bit more spice 😉 but overall very satisfied!

I love the giant-assed fried chicken chop here - it’s as big as your face, crispy, flat, juicy and the seasoning is so more-ish. It’s easy to eat and the best part is gnawing at the bone bit at the end which has the most flavour.

Hotstar is the best place to find taiwanese fried cchicken at Melbourne! Took couple of minutes wait for its to be ready and we also allowed to choose some seasoning for the chicken. Its really yummy, tender and crispy!!

So they claim to have the juiciest larger than life chicken shcnitzel and guess what, they are right. Before tasting it actually, I was skeptical about its moistness and suspected it to get dry by the time I finished it. I thought no topping of sauces might render it an incomplete dish. However, I was proved wrong. Evidently, you can have a shcnitzel on its own without any salads or sauces if it's bought at Hotstar. I have had dry schnitzel issues at other places so I can say that. Also thumbs up for Taiwanese Street food.

Deep fried chicken schnitzel is one of the most popular street foods in Taiwan and you can find it at any Food Market around Taiwan. Hot Star’s Chicken Schnitz may not be the best compared to Taiwan’s, but is definitely good and must try. Hot Star also has small bites, such as sweet potato fries that come in a combo with any bit bite and drink.

Honestly disappointing. Yes it's huge. But the overall flavour gets sickly after a few bites. Wish they just didn't include the bony part so you got a more realistic view of what you were getting. Disagree with the advice to not share - we bought one each and easily could've shared. Probably would've enjoyed it more in small quantities.

I first tasted the original Hot Star large fried chicken in the store where it all started in Taipei a few years ago and remembered how tasty and good value it was for street food! The hot star chicken on Swanstons st brought back all the fond memories from Taipei as it tasted just as good! I ordered the original chicken which I was told was salt & pepper. It took about 10 mins wait for the chicken to be fried and served. I was so tempted to bite the freshly fried chicken straight away but decided to savour it later at home. The chicken is super large and can feed 2 persons. I liked it because crispy yet not oily and the meat inside still juicy!

If you want Taiwanese fried chicken served in a paper bag, this is your spot. Really delicious tiny little takeaway outlet, frequented by students. It's absolutely delicious with a tiny footprint and an equally tiny menu. Great value for what you get, and perfect for munching on a breaded chicken cutlet in a bag while you walk around the CBD.

Walked pass this eatery and felt like to have some snacks so gave it a go. It was not the first time that I had Hot Star Fried Chicken, they always busy but I found the traffic congestion on this branch was particularly serious. I had to wait for at least five minutes (even though I was the first of the queue) till one of the two staff had time to clear off their accumulated orders then could spare the time to take new order. That sort of business just made me jealous. However, my chicken bites and fried mushroom really made me calm down and understood why they are busy. Quantity and quality are all above average. I am speechless!

Taiwanese street food on the go. Friendly service and a few seasonings to pick from. The chicken noms are compact and worth its price. Crispy outer with a tender inner. Can't say the size of the bites are consistent as they used to be but the batter is still the same which is a good thing.

Hot-Star is a Taiwanese fast food chain that delivers large pieces of chicken that are freshly fried, made with 100% chicken breast and not processed. The proof is the bones leftover after finishing it!. There’s two Hot-Star branches on Swanston St, located after 8bit Burger on Little Bourke St, and another located just before Little Lonsdale St. I prefer to go to the latter, as the location of the one near Little Bourke creates a congestion due to customers waiting so close to the crossing not only for Hot Star orders, but for Gong Cha as well, which blocks pedestrians that cross the street.
