Review Taka's Kitchen - Perth

Derek Jenkins
We were given a few recommendations to visit this casual Japanese restaurant. It did NOT disappoint. Genuine Japanese hospitality, unbeatable prices (eg a crazy $9.90 for a massive serve of miso katsudon with miso soup) and authentic Chūbu/Kanto flavours. If you love Japanese food then this place is a must.

Considered cheap food in Australia. Their rice is not Japanese rice but it's good enough for me. the portion is big as well

Great Japanese food at economical price. Excellent counter service.

My favorite Karaage in the whole world. A real taste of Japan at amazingly cheap prices. This has been my favorite place to eat for many years, and despite not being a student with a budget anymore, I can't stop going there. This place is popular with all types it seems, and is great for a quick bite or a massive feast. The food is always great, and takeaway is quick. Not to mention HUGE servings for the price. Truly a fantastic place to eat on a budget, and I even know chefs that eat here, which either says a lot about their wages or the quality of the food (hint: it doesn't matter - just try it yourself) Proof that quality authentic Japanese Cuisine can be had for a low price in a city where "cheap and good" can be hard to find. In the ~13 years I've eaten there, they got a takeaway order wrong ONCE. Just eat there. Do it.

No surprise that this place is always packed up , the value for money is incredible! Where else can you get a good meal for 2 people + drinks for $24?! The quality is surprising for the price but it's not top notch. Don't bother get the sushi, it's not worth it.

Great tasting Japanese food at cheap price. Lot of tables and most of the tables were free when i visited for a sunday lunch. Have seen the place gets quite crowded at weekday lunch times.

Always been a fan, quick, low cost food in the city where there are many tables. Their small size dish is perfect meal size for me - not too heavy, just right.

Decent food at fairly low prices. Wait was reasonable but there was a bit of a queue to order. Not exactly amazing interior but it was passable.

Taka has been around for a long time and hasn't changed much over the years other than a few menu alterations, price increases and, IMO a disappointment, their sushi rolls used to have wasabi rolled up in them but that stopped being a thing a few years ago. There's nothing fancy to their food, don't expect any Japanese artistry, things are just flung together without any care for how things look. No eating with your eyes at this place. lol. But the food tastes great for a quick grab, it's reasonably priced and I recommend after eating it for years, the Agedashi Tofu, any of the Sushi Rolls and the Salmon Don. They also used to have a great prawn dish but that's now unfortunately off the menu.
Prior to Covid-19 they had started to pre-make the Sushi Rolls and sell them throughout the day from a cabinet-type setup. I thought it was a cop-out and the rolls were often stale.
Taka is still good value for money in amongst other options whose prices are now over the top for average food hall takeaway but I'll drop Taka from my regular options if, once they're post-Covid-19 settled, they revert to pre-making their food instead of rolling the Sushi Rolls to order.

The chicken katsu was delicious! I also had the avocado roll and miso soup. Both good. My cravings were satisfied.

I’m a regular customer. The food is quick, filling and hot with the staff very friendly. Decent prices for a decent serving, with the option of a large size which comes with a free miso soup.

Great value in Fremantle. For $15 I got a large chicken katsu with rice AND a nice healthy garden salad. The food was pretty standard and what you would expect at a fast food sort of place but all that for $15 is a bargain! Their wasabi also had a good kick to it.

There are so many options in the food court, but Taka has always been my favourite choice to go to. Super affordable prices for a selection of meals, be it large or small. Their chicken katsu rice and unagi eel rice are my favourite. Efficient service and I find no fault with them :)

This place is good if your looking for cheap Japanese food. Owned and run by Japanese people, although their menu is tweaked to cater for the western tastebuds, it is still quite authentic Japanese cuisine. Their sushis are made fresh to order, their rice are cooked in proper Japanese manner, their teriyaki chicken is delicious! It is a food hall and their turn around is so quick that the trays are normally not 100% dry from being washed.

For cheap fairly tasty Japanese Taka is consistently decent. I've only ever stuck to the staples it was good considering how cheap it was. Teriyaki and sushis are fresh tasting enough.

The Old Shanghi is a landmark is it not. Taka resides here and serves good simple and cheap Japanese. Very good for the pocket and the tummy :)

I REALLY enjoy eating Taka at city (both Shafto Lane and CBD) so I was excited to find Taka inside Old Shanghai foodcourt as the price is the same as the one in city : which is cheap.

But soon I was dissapointed by the size of the meal. The same $8 chicken karaage has so little rice (much lesser in comparison) and the chicken was also smaller and slightly fewer in portion - don't you think we won't compare? To make it worse, they don't have the mayonnaise salad dressing on the counter (like the one they have in city store and I can just add as much as I want).

Nonetheless it is still decent for an $8 meal.

Always the most popular spot in the Old Shanghai. Cheap and cheerful. The sushi is good and fresh 9 times out of ten, the teriyaki and katsu dishes are also good. The soups are pretty terrible. such a Freo institution, cant see them going anywhere/changing any time.

Very well priced and fresh Japanese food. It's not the best Japanese feed in town but it is good. If you're after a cheap but nice and fresh meal this is the place to go. All meals are made to order and I have never had a complaint, been eating here for years.

What happened to this place! After eating here for twenty years, I was surprised to now see a sign warning that unsatisfactory meals would not be refunded (rather, replaced). This was obviously a harbinger of impending doom! My chicken karage was completely pink inside! The replacement of my beloved teriyaki beef was almost half cooked and extremely sloppy. I guess Taka must always be staffed by students of varying skill, but I left completely disappointed. Hopefully things are back to normal soon.

Excellent, quick and fresh Japanese takeaway. No frills, not fancy but excellent value. We frequent here for lunch and when we want a quick tasty dinner

It's not exactly the same as the city... Rice is much smaller here and somehow the karaage has too much ginger... They don't supply the mayonnaise for the salad dressing which I usually get extra for the chicken hahaha... But overall we still enjoyed our meal, it is quick, easy and the kids like them.. Just what we wanted, as we r hunting for desserts elsewhere after this ;) Plus it's only $8 for large size ;)

Taka-taka-taka-taka-taka.

This is the sound the back tyre of your bike makes when you put some cardboard in the spokes to recreate the sound of the motorbikes in Mad Max.

Taka is great. Super super super cheap. You can eat for less than ten bucks at each one. That's pretty amazing in Colin Barnett's Perth. You'd pay more for a terrible coffee in Subiaco.*

Obviously this isn't your high grade italian leather of Japanese food, it's cheap and sturdy. It's a building block. There's no flare but there is an abundance of umami.
I love this place.

*side note.
Is Subiaco the worst place in Perth?
(Obviously not including Joondalup in this question)

Some of the best tempura in Perth - this place is an institution. Always busy but always quick - I've never been disappointed eating here. Great value.

I love it

Its flavour is decidely sweeter and less complex than most Miso and Tonkotsu broths but still tasty, and recalls for me the Asian-style Chicken Macaroni Soup I ate in my youth. Finally, the no-frills toppings include Taka's good but not particularly noteworthy Teriyaki Chicken, and a plain boiled egg with a fully set yolk. Good for emergencies and the budget conscious, but not by any means an essential bowl.

I high af and love it. Chicken

Great sushi. The wife and I eat here at least once a week - great value and delicious sushi!

So so. Yes it is cheap, however there isn't much quality (I mean, I guess you get what you pay for) but after having good experiences at the city location I expected a little more. Having said that, the staff are friendly and service is quick.

My friend and I go for lunch every Wednesday and without a doubt we will always choose Taka's! The menu and staff has changed from the original photos and happy guy on the phone, but the delicious food still does the job! Teriyaki tofu, udon noodle soup and gyozas are all faves that we fail to resist every week!

I can't believe how this restaurant get a 95% rating. I love Taka in the city and have been going there and I thought it would the same with this one. Ordered chicken karage and it was the worse karage ever....the fried chicken was different...strange I might say...and the miso soup given was full of water hence tasteless.....

It was my first time going to Taka in Fremantle and I am totally dissapointed....won't come back again.

It's nothing fancy, but consistently tasty, cheap, enjoyable food. Never had Bad experience or bad dish. Always satisfied and happy. $15 buys you a feast !

Taka has been going string for 20 odd years. Fantastic chicken katsu all yummy crunchy crumbed chucked pieces with juicy meat and beautiful grains of rice. The nori rolls never disappoint. I converted my parents - my 60 year old odd WASP parent into chopstick-wielding Japanese food eating machines courtesy of Taka. Is cheap too, it's possible to have a fair meal with soup for under 10 bucks. Freo legends.

Yum! Love this place....... I love this takeaway! or dine in. I make a friday night of it shopping at the markets then having a wine and terriakyi beef at Takas- so cheap and value for money. I have eaten alot of japanese food and this is the best even for some fine dining japanese resturants.
