Came here to grab a quick lunch before heading to the market for some grocery shopping. The staff were quick to seat us and handed us menus and complimentary tea promptly. The price is fairly reasonable and they do lunchtime specials. I'm not sure since when, but they started doing a few specials for $8.80 only. I ordered the hainanese chicken rice and my partner ordered the fried beef rice vermicelli both at $8.80 each. The serving portions were big and they weren't stingy with the amount of beef or chicken either. We weren't able to finish both dishes between the two of us and had to take the left overs away. The hainanese chicken wasn't the most authentic but the ginger sauce and the chilli sauce that accompanied the chicken were both really tasty and for the price, I couldn't ask for more.
The staff are really quick to respond to you but the only downside to our visit would be the older waitress kept speaking to us in Cantonese which we couldn't understand.
What a surprise .... from it's brother or cousin on Victoria St, Richmond.
Well, I haven't visited their Richmond restaurant for a while now, as it was going South with their food. So I was very surprised with their Preston restaurant.
Quite modern, very nicely set up, clean, neat and pleasant.
Food-wise, $12.80 for 2 roast combo on rice is the most expensive along the esplanade, however it took the gong for its Crispy Pork Belly, their BBQ Pork Belly is good too. The only downside they served me very little of those yummy Crispy Pork Belly, why?
Will try the rest soon.
I was not aware that Minh Xuong has opened in Preston until a friend of ours suggested to head over there for lunch. It was not very busy on a Sunday afternoon and I'm sure this contributed to the attentive service we received. For me, the litmus test for a good Asian/Cantonese restaurant is the roast meats. Minh Xuong passed with flying colours. The cha siew was a good mix of lean and fat meat, and satisfying a personal preference of mine, some of the lean meats were burnt which gave them a slightly crisped texture. The chicken was juicy and moist, even to the point that the beast meat was devoured by my partner who hates the dryness and coarseness of chicken breast. The beef fried rice was also a great dish that showcased how simple food can be delicious. The rice was fragrant, and the tiny chunks of beef tender and flavourful. The only dish that failed to wow was the butter gourd with black bean sauce. It was lacking the aromatic savoury taste of the fermented black beans that gives the sauce its distinctive taste. Otherwise, still an ok dish. Definitely worth a return visit for dinner to try out the other dishes.
