Review Noir - Richmond

Adam Wang
Been to a few French restaurant before, this one is quite special. Chicken liver parfait with fig chutney and toasted brioche - a quite unique combination. Unlike most of restaurants serving with cracker, brioche is a great idea. The sweet and sourness of fig sauce plus the crispiness and tenderness from brioche bring this course to a new level. The two mains - confit duck and crayfish are at a high level as well. Great dining experience, highly recommended.

It’s been a while since we’ve been back to Noir in Richmond some 8 years in fact. Our original experience was more of a fine dining restaurant and our most recent visit in July of 2022 would suggest that like all things this place has changed too. My new connection with Noir was one of a more relaxed dining experience. Where the staff were welcoming and the food was more bistro like in style but was great all round. We had three guests and it pretty much came to $100 a head. Which is fairly reasonable. So if you haven’t been in a while and want a more relaxed dining experience check them out on Swan Street in Richmond.

Enjoyed the lively and relaxed atmosphere. Food was very good and not cliches of French fare which we appreciated thoroughly. The desert, the orange and chocolate gateau, was exquisite and heavenly. By far the highlight of the night. Go for the tasting menu. It is outstanding value at 80 bucks. Will definitely recommend and return.

Came here for some French food. Love the beef tartare, the chicken liver parfait and the duck confit. My friends love the scallop, I'm not a big fan though. Same with the calamari. I tried out the panisse but didn't really like it. For dessert, we had orange and chocolate gateau and raspberry and white chocolate souffle. I would say the gateau has a better flavour palette for me.

The service was a bit cold from the waiters. We ordered the tartare, parsley linguine, chicken liver parfait & eel veloutte for entrées, pork belly & duck leg for main, all pretty average. The desserts were better though.

It’s sad that google has only five stars rating. I will definitely rate more stars for Noir if I can. We have celebrated my Mom’s birthday here and it was a hundred percent fantastic experience. Nice service nice people, tasty food super fresh and locates on a good spot. We have ordered the tasting courses. The olive oil for the bread has garlic added which makes it differed from what I normally eat. We were discussing why the butter doesn’t melt. And I guess they got daily fresh delivery directly after the butter has been made? The entrée plate was special, their oysters are flavored with champagne and it’s the first time we have an oyster in such flavor it emphasises the fresh of oyster. The puff was salty and creamy very French. And we also love the liver. The salad tastes super organic. Their choice of inventory is pretty smart. And I have always been missing of the French style duck. I was once impressed by the duck and have been looking for a good restaurant that can do the duck well. The duck here was juicy and crispy absolutely what I love. Btw I forgot to take the photo of lobster dumplings. Just go and try, highly recommend.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

The food looks great and taste great too. Atmosphere s really good. They seem to be short of staff. Constantly chasing their tale. There are lots of great food in the area as well. Overall i think it is a little too pricy for what it is. It s too much to pay $350 for 2 including 2 drinks. Apart from that it s all tumbs ups.

Superb French dining in an intimate setting. Great steak tartare, confit duck and crème brûlée. Drinks list pairs nicely. Appreciated a high end beer choice too from wildflower

Dined at your restaurant yesterday and your meals were delicious... and your waiter was very friendly and explained what was in our dish. Will recommend to friends and family.

A beautiful restaurant with a lovely minimalist decor. The food was lovely and our divine waiter was attentive and charming. I highly recommend x

Fantastic experience on Friday night for my Dad's 87th birthday. Nothing to fault yet again. We keep coming back as excellent food, generous serves and great service. Friendly intimate atmosphere with an interesting menu, both food & wine.

The food was perfect and the service was exceptional; i highly recommend it

Had a brilliant Sunday brunch tasting most of the menu and the bottomless bubbles are a perfect match!

Thank you Noir for supporting Richmond Creche and Kindergarten. Your wine is truly excellent and we highly recommend it. From all of us to all of you, we wish you a Merry Christmas

I had a interesting night at this restaurant in 2012. We spent a lot of money and bought the best of everything as we were celebrating. We started with oysters in champagne and my first one was amazing! The second tasted awful so I had to spit it out- I think it was bad. Anyway, the rest of our night was great. Good champagne excellent service lots of laughs and a big tip foe our wonderful waiter. 5 hours later I was sick. Really sick. It was food poisoning and I was taken to the hospital. I was out of action for 4 days and I eventually changed my flight back to Queensland early and cancelled the rest of the week. When my friend rang the next day to inform them they were so rude and just didn't care. It was so shocking. It cost me a lot of money to cancel my trip and I didn't even get an apology. I will never forget this and I will never ever be back and I will definitely never recommend it.

Had dinner with my fiance last night and couldn't have asked for more. The food was perfect, the wine exceptional but most of all the service was second to none. A huge thank you to the wait staff on last night and the chefs who prepared perfect meals.

Beautiful restaurant with a great tasting menu! Definitely worth it 🙂

Little disappointed , nice to be welcomed by Ebony with a great smile and hello. The menu was a little hard to choose from . Finally two of us had the fish, this was a little dry as it had been cooked to long. The time between first course and main was a little to long. Not that the restaurant was busy. My husband had the soup sorry nice bowl but not much in it. Our partners had the duck which they liked. I think the time factor put us off a little. We will try again,

Portion sizes, i felt, were generous. Had prawn bisque, herb gnocci and creme brulee. All very delicious but i couldnt finish dessert. My entire table enjoyed everything they ordered. We all ate something different. We did order two sides - salad and veggies. We were brought fries instead of the veggies. Once we saw how big our meals were, we didnt bother to correct. We pretty much left the fries. I would go again because what we did eat was nice. Our waiter was friendly and happy to explain the menu.

Amazing food and very friendly staff! Will definitely come back

Wonderful experience from the waitress through to the delicious meals . Top class experience and will revisit Noir again. Well done to all concerned

Decided to go here with a friend as we had heard good things! We enjoyed a range of delicious French inspired dishes that we ordered. For mains I enjoyed the butter gnocchi which was very delicious, and the rhubarb soufflé had to be a favourite! Recommend visiting for a special night out!
Bear Noms
We came here for our friend’s birthday on a weekday and enjoyed the lovely relaxed atmosphere. We enjoyed the spanner crab tortellini but the other two entrees were not memorable. The mains however, of the lamb rump and duck confit were delicious!

Incredible value for exceptionally delicious food. We had the 3 course lunch with a glass of wine for $40. Everything was beautifully cooked and seasoned with well balanced and intense flavor. The service was excellent and the dining room was intimate and relaxed. A wonderful experience and we will definitely be back.

So came here for a mid week dinner catch up and was welcomed in and felt like I was in someone dining room. Waiters were attentive and nice. Restaurant has a nice neighborhood cozy feel even in the bathroom. <br/>We had spanned crab tortellini for entree to share followed by the monkfish prawn pie with basil mash and cremebrulee, chocolate gateau and pavlova for dessert. Everything was lovely but in particular the fish pie. Was exactly what we needed with it being such a cold wet night outside. Will definitely come back to try more of the menu. Definitely could taste the French cooking style but had a nice modern take which was refreshing.

Been here a few times now ... the $28 Friday lunch is great value ... as part of set I chose the beef .. had pate canapés and cheese. Staff and service has consistently been good... being a workday didn’t go overboard with the wine..
Jess
One of Melbourne's best restaurants. The food is consistently great each time we visit Noir. The service is friendly and attentive. Highly recommend the pork belly and the gnocchi. This place is perfect for romantic dinners
Gary
A great kitchen with some innovative twists on French cuisine. A serviceable wine list with some interesting French goodies. Patchy service. If booking for an early time double check they haven't double-booked your table anticipating someone 1.5-2 hours after you - not very French or hospitable, a worrying trend for a place that prides itself on being a neighbourhood favourite. Oyesters and duck are recommended.
Lindsay
We attended a small evening function at Noir. The food was wonderful. We started with oysters and pate canapés. Then followed a salad of yellow fin tuna and a spanner crab tortellini - delicious. The main course was an excellently presented Gippsland duck dish - very tender and tasty. We finished with a very tasty mix of cheeses. The staff provided very good service and the ambience was very pleasant.
JB
Nice classic environment with attentive staff, unfortunately no X factor. Food was good but once again outside of a basic nice venue meal nothing super sexy. This place won’t disappoint but certainly won’t hook you in for a return flight.

Loved Noir. We both chose the duck which did not disappoint and was probably the best duck I’ve ever tasted. Cooked perfectly with delicious accompaniments. We chose snow peas and potatoes that were crispy and delicious. The servings were most generous which left little room for dessert so we chose the lemon tart petit fours-perfect. The staff were delightful and helpful with selecting a matching wine. We’ll definitely be back.

Thank you Noir for such a memorable Mother's day lunch. My mother in law loved everything being served. And knowing she enjoyed herself, I couldn't ask for more. Service was excellent. That pinot grit from Alsace was so delicious and great value for money. I'll be coming back for sure.
BL
Amazing! Can not fault the food. My husband wanted to run away with the chef. Although I was so so full after 2 courses I managed to soldier on & get through 4 & it was worth it
Mrs Mark
I found this place underwhelming and not particularly memorable. We had the anchovy tartlets, polenta chips, beef tartare and spanner crab tortellini for entrees and had the duck and lamb noisette for main. The highlight was the side of roast pumpkin with Parmesan purée. Everything else just tasted a bit bland.
Simon Biddle
Friday evening dinner with a few work colleagues. Compact but imaginative French-influenced menu, executed perfectly. Had a great beef tartare entree and duck main. Good wine menu to support. Recommend.

Amazing food such great value had the express lunch and can't believe what you get for $28. To think I've been getting a pub Parma for the same price on my regular Friday lunch out. Be back for sure ( is every Friday too often?)

Came to the restaurant with few people for dessert and wine.It was amazingly delicious! We ordered 3 different types of desserts and all of them were spectacular and well presented.<br/>Very professional staff members, polite and know all about French cuisine:)<br/>If you like quiet atmosphere and fine dining, you should visit Noir!<br/>4.5/5

Great service and good space to take prams/kids. Liked the food. Servings are decent size and good proprtioned. Friendly staff. They even have good veg option which is great as it gives some veg people great options to choose rather than 1 or 2.

Saturday 19.08.17 at 8pm. <br/>Noir was a truly enjoyable, scrumptious experience. <br/>From the bread with rosemary olive oil to the appetisers of Oysters and Anchovy tartlets, through the entrees of beef, tuna and Tortellini finally through to mains of snapper and pork each dish was a delicious creation. <br/>From the evening it was near impossible to pick a favourite piece.

Had the Sunday lunch 6 courses (I think) it was fantastic so delicious and the wines were fab, service was also great. Will definitely go back.

Double date night. Staff were very nice. However,Main food were too salty for us. The price is reasonable. We ordered beef cheek, lamb, duck meats. I believe someone would love the heavy taste.

Had amazing dinner at Noir, the Rabbit pie was delicious, venison was tender, beef tartare is quite refreshing with apple slices, duck leg is a must. And dessert? Awesome combination of sweet and sour. Service was very attentive.

First time here and it definitely won't be the last. I'd heard of Noir trending and was very excited to try it when a friend held his birthday here. I've always loved French food and this was no exception. <br/><br/>There are 2 entrances - one to the main restaurant and another to an upstairs dining area which our party had booked out. <br/><br/>Couldn't get over the tasteful decor (as you can see from the photos) and then came the food! <br/><br/>We had the Sunday Shared Lunch of $55/person and needless to say, we were all rolling out of there by day's end:<br/>• Coffin Bay oysters, Champagne granita<br/>• Salted cod croquette on a soft bed of lime Mayonnaise<br/>• Truffled pecorino polenta chips<br/>• Eye fillet of beef tartare, waldorf salad, pommes gaufrette<br/>• Yellowfin tuna Nicoise, quail eggs, tomatoes, black olives<br/>• Crisp breast and confit leg of duck, heirloom green figs, pain d'epices puree<br/>• Chocolate and pistachio brownie, raspberry sorbet<br/><br/>Had a lovely glass of Malbec too for $13 and all coffees were $4. <br/><br/>The wait staff deserve a mention too as they were commendable - so attentive and pleasant - and that made the experience all the more lovely. <br/><br/>Definitely recommend you try it as I'm sure your experience will be just as memorable. <br/><br/>Thanks for having us Noir! Keep up the great work!

We had the tasting menu and it was sensational. Every dish was delicious and the staff were lovely, very informative and accomodating. Highly recommend.

I've always overlooked Noir in the past for some reason but I finally got around to trying it out tonight. Quaint little restaurant with friendly service and a classic and refined French style menu. We started off with complementary sourdough rolls with rosemary oil. Then for entree we went for the oysters. Whilst I'm normally a traditionalist when it comes to oysters (always natural with lemon) i branched out and tried the Noir version which was topped with spanner crab, chilli, coriander and lime. They were phenomenal! Highly recommend. Then for main I went for the Murray cod with fricassee of summer vegetables and sorrel butter. A simple but beautifully executed dish. And a decent portion size too which was impressive.

Came here for New Year's Eve dinner and was very excited to see what they got to offer. Unfortunately most of the dishes were a let down. I didn't enjoy many of the dishes, some were too heavy and some just weren't executed well enough. Also, I really disliked some of the plating. You know what they say, you eat with your eyes. Some of the dishes did not look appetising at all, eg. the meat dish and the fig dessert, both having same kind of plating which looked quite unpleasant.
Angela Wijeratne
Had a fabulous meal, hubby and I choose a la carte. Entree of kingfish tuna nicoise and prawn bisque both beautifully presented and not a morsel left. Mains duck leg and steak both again beautifully presented and yum. Side salad complemented the meal. Dessert of fresh berries, cream and honeycomb completed this beautiful meal. Wait staff were attentive and made the experience special. Would definitely return to Noir

Fine diner with an unpretentious feel and achievable price point in Swan St. Suits couples or small groups. In a small shopfront. Choose from a la Carte or degustation menu, either is a good option. Highlights were the duck and lamb mains respectively and the chocolate dessert. While I usually find chocolate desserts too heavy, this right sized slice offset with very nice sorbet was a perfect finish to a lovely meal. Very friendly and courteous service and great wine knowledge make it easy to enjoy the experience.

Terrific tucked away gem of a place. The lunch tasting plate at $55 is great value and absolutely delicious. The place doesn't make a fuss either about change, they happily changed the duck to lamb for us without a big song and dance. That was very appreciated. Hate it when you are made to feel like you are asking the world for a simple swap. The others enjoyed the tasting plate, I chose the mushroom pie off the menu. It was scrumptious . That's the other thing. I was ' allowed' to have my own dish while the others shared the tasting plate.. Some places don't allow that. So all in all, great food and terrific customer service. You were made to feel welcome. We will be back! And our waitress Tatiana was also excellent. Very attentive and friendly.

Good experience! Especially $55pp for Sunday Lunch, and totally worthy it! <br/>Oysters were very fresh and flavored, for person like me don't normally take raw Oyster! Love it the first time ever! <br/>Followed by few entries, all tasty and nice! <br/>The main - Both Duck and Lamb were really fantastic!

Had high expectations for this restaurant, and they delivered! Food was amazing. I went out on a limb and ordered the fish pie and it was great! I had to ask for a spoon to drink up the sauce! Not much a view out their windows but the foods so good it doesn't matter

First time at this restaurant and it really surprised me, exceeded my expectations. We were greeted with great service and had some amazing dishes as can be seen by the photos. I would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant and will be back for sure 👍

My wife and I went there for my birthday hoping for a nice French dinner. What we got was a wonderful and impactful dinner that was both generous with flavour and beauty. We went for the 5 course 'tasting' menu for $75 each. The first course was an amazing cured kingfish with a beautiful smoky flavoured aioli and picked radishes. Glorious. Absolutely glorious. A salad of Jerusalem artichoke with truffled oil was decadent and delicious. Each of the next three were sensational and something that deserved top marks. The reason for it getting 4 out of 5 was the front of house staff. This place has top tier tastes but the wait staff were just a little too inattentive. With better staff, this has some serious potential. Will be back for their $55 Sunday lunch.

We had an amazing anniversary dinner at Noir. It's a beautiful small room with mood lighting, great wine and delicious food. The highlights for us were the pork belly, Moreton bay bug cannelloni and the fish pie 👌🏼 Service was fantastic, too. Would definitely recommend.

Noir is a 5 yrs old, AGFG one hatted modern French restaurant. An up and rising hidden gem in Melbourne, and recommend by Justine Schofield. I used to love Bistro Guilaumme at Crown, but Noir has now become my fav! A must come restaurant if you love French cuisine. Pics speak for itself.. Top value for money Shared Sunday Lunch $55pp, every course was prepared w love and care.. Creative, high quality, and generous serving, excellent friendly service..Well done Noir team. Will be back to try their $75 tasting menu.

beautiful cosy restaurant. rushed for early sitting even though empty. service was nonexistent and we were asked to stand outside whilst partners settling the bill as time had run out. food was ok but way overpriced for bistro dining. Bistro Gitan, Mr. jennings and Anchovy similar price, better food and service<br/>Avoid

Went there for dinner with my partner last week. Couldn't pick any dish from the entrees so decided to get 2 mains for myself. Had the fish pastry first which was interesting presented with silver service but tasted just alright. After had a venison which tasted better but still can't impress me much. The best part for the dinner was the venue itself which are the decoration, music and the beautiful French cutlery! Overall the atmosphere 5/5 food 3/5, service 3/5. Was a good dinning experience with noir and recommended to go for a dating.

After hearing about this place from family members and friends about the good food, I thought I give this place a try. I just flew back from overseas and still experiencing jet lag but it's nothing good food won't fix. <br/><br/>As a first timer at the place, first impressions was that this was a nice intimate setting - warm and cozy and a great spot for a gathering with friends and certainly great for a date location. It was quieter than I expected with only one other table occupied but I guess this could be because of the long weekend. The service was attentive and the waitress was friendly without being intrusive. <br/><br/>We went for the Sunday lunch special which at $55 per person represents fantastic value particularly after scanning the menu where a lot of the mains were averaging the $30 mark. So this is a great way to taste multiple dishes without breaking the bank. <br/><br/>The lunch menu started with coffin bay oysters with champagne granita which is very refreshing and the pickled prawns fennel and Pernod was light and delicious The next course was noirs steak tartare, followed by Aubergine tortellini which in my opinion the pasta was a bit tough but overall great. The main was crisp pork belly and apple slaw (great flavour combination) - you can't go wrong with pork and apple. Stand out though and highlight of the set menu has to be dessert. We had the salted toffee cheesecake and sweet corn ice cream. The salt really highlights the sweetness and a great balance to the dish and what a great way to finish. <br/><br/>For the price, the set menu is great value for money and really allows you to taste what noir has to offer. The dishes for the price is outstanding and is a great lunch option on a Sunday.

Really nice evening. Not sure on the two sittings rule as they were pretty empty when we arrived at 8:15pm. Food was all well cooked and presented, good wine list but on the more expensive side. Service was a bit hit and miss early but definitely improved over the night. Overall, a nice night out!

Decided to take my boyfriend here for our anniversary. Booked via Dimmi and when I arrived, I was pleased to see a nice, intimate, dimly-lit restaurant. I pulled out a beautiful bottle of red that I had brought along with me after ringing to check the day prior and being to they were in fact BYO with a $20 corkage. "We aren't actually BYO on weekends" the waiter tells me. Hmmm annoying. The wines on the menu seemed overpriced but we still ordered a couple of glasses. What's a nice meal without wine? For entrée we ordered oysters with champagne granite which was lovely and refreshing. My main was the fillet of rocking while my boyfriend ordered a well-done ribeye. My fish was ok but not great. Not as flavourful as I would have liked. The steak arrived medium at best, despite our well-done request. The sides we ordered were also ok but not great- an iceburg lettuce salad with shaved veggies and a cumin flavoured cauliflower dish which was probably the highlight of the night. We decided to get desert elsewhere. The bill came to $155. Probably won't be back as the BYO issue and lackluster meals clouded our night.

We landed at Noir quite by accident. The restaurant we had decided on was full and had a long waiting list so we walked into Noir without having much of an idea of the food. But what a pleasant surprise it was.<br/><br/>The dinner was a treat for an old friend visiting us from Scotland and Noir was the perfect space for that. A beautiful, intimate ambience for a long, slow dinner with incredible food and wine. <br/><br/>Distinctly French with a contemporary spin, all of the dishes were excellent. We had the cumin spiced cauliflower with a cashew sauce, grilled rockling, thyme and mushroom gnoccete and Moreton Bay Bug cannelloni with a seafood bisque. Every dish was presented beautifully and each mouthful was a delightful explosion of flavours. We matched the food with glasses of Brut and Chablis. Finished the meal with a delicious brulee and Granny Smith apple sorbet.<br/><br/>The service was excellent and we were thoroughly pleased with the whole experience. Recommend it highly.

Just had a spectacular meal at Noir. Everything was amazing. So much flavor in every bite. Had the Sunday special lunch. 4 courses for $55, absolutely great value for money. Service pretty good, very friendly and accommodating. Accommodated vegetarian in the party. Highly recommend. Wish this little gem was around the corner from me.

The best french restaurant in town! Absolutely love it! service is just outstanding! And food wise.... Is up to you, because the whole menu is to die for!!! Highly recommended!!

Nice atmosphere, top notch service. Attentive and friendly. Absolutely satisfying courses. Standouts was the beef appetizer, pillowy gnocchi with a delightful sauce & duck steak. Each course was gorgeously balanced. Downside- no room in stomach for dessert.

Located an easy 3-minute walk from East Richmond Station, or 1-minute walk via Stop 11 – Church St/Swan St via Tram Route 70 Wattle Park via Swan St. <br/><br/>Placed in the vicinity of plenty of well-known eateries such as Jimmy Grants, Meatmother, Fonda, Sabai & Bahari, this French restaurant can be easy to miss with such heavy competition.

We recently discovered Noir in Richmond and was very impressed with the food and service so of course wanted to share our experience with you!. Noir is a cosy French restaurant so you do have to make sure that you make a booking if you’re planning to dine there! Although the space is small, the wooden tables and chairs are quite generously spaced from each other so you do get a sense of intimacy and personal space.

Well I had a birthday dinner here. The food was nice, we had 5 courses. However. The staff was so rude and in a rush, especially the guy named Andrew, 1st we were asking which tram can arrive there, that guy said: no one takes team to our restaurant. 2nd, we were told on the phone that they accept BYO, when we arrived, the guy said we only do that at weekend! Then, we were told we couldn't order 7 courses even we pre ordered on the phone. At last, we just wanted to add a dessert and was rejected. What a service!
Memory
The service was fantastic and I love the main dish of fish fillet. My friend chose duck which was also tasty. Coz we rushed of time, I didn't try dessert there.
Tyson
Excellent little restaurant where you get great food and service to match....one of our favourites! Just don't get an early booking as they'll probably want you out by 8pm for a second sitting.
Tanya Saulnier
We had the degustation with matching wines. Beautiful! It was a great evening. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. Definitely recommended!
Courtney
We did the tasting menu (but chose our own wines). Loved it! Kingfish was really beautiful - wasn't sure I'd like the creamy mousse with it but I really did! Pork belly looked slightly underwhelming when it arrived but appearances deceived - it was perfectly cooked and tasted superb. Service was right on - glasses were promptly filled etc but they never felt intrusive and very helpful with wine recommendations. Toffee apple dessert was salty but it really worked. I always feel compelled to order soufflés on menus so I was really happy it was on the tasting menu. Delicious! My favourite soufflé this year. We were there for a small work group but it'd make a great date night.
Samantics
Great food and service. We enjoyed a lovely pre concert dinner here tonight. I recommend trying the oysters, they're some of the freshest and tastiest I've eaten in a while. They also try their best to accomodate for food intolerances which helped us. Well worth a visit if you like flavourful food in a welcoming and un-pretentious atmosphere

I had lunch yesterday with my friends and the words that exemplifythe food is " brilliant, delicious, 100% perfectWe couldn't fault any part of the lunch, the service was perfect too, you must try this amazing place...

Category: French Australian Fusion Fine dining<br/>Price: $100 per person<br/>Score: 90/100<br/><br/>I brought my sister here for her birthday after hearing great things about Noir! The French inspired fusion menu is full of choices and enticing. The wine list is decent too ranging from by the glass, to half carafes 50cl, as well as full bottles 75cl of local and imported selections.<br/>The staff are attentive, friendly with big smiles on their faces all the time.<br/>We chose the seasonal tasting menu with some French champagne and French red. It did not disappoint. This was a 6 course menu with a complimentary appetizer, and palate cleanser (spiked with some Hendricks gin).<br/>Our favourite was the dessert which was a fluffy toffee apple souffle akin to the best fluffy pillows of souffle in France, with a beautiful salted caramel ice cream which wasn't overly sweet like most others. I would go to Noir just for this dessert.<br/>However their Berkshire pork Belly with pickled scallops was amazing as was the duck cooked to perfection with its nice pink flesh and crispy skin.<br/>This was a great restaurant with an ever changing menu. I will definitely be back.
David Hewitt
Decent meal. Good presentation. Lacked a bit of flavour. Everything was acceptable but nothing extraordinary. Expected a bit more given its reputations.
Vanessa Lee McKellar
Delicious food, fantastic service and great ambience! The kingfish and eye fillet entrees were super tasty and wonderfully presented whilst the duck and rabbit mains were equally amazing with the perfect combinations of different flavours. Will definitely be back again.
TheBearReview
I remember coming here 2 years ago and the food was pretty good, so I was quite excited to go again tonight. The menu looked exciting and the food did not disappoint, but it didn't blow us away. That has more to do with the fact that we are probably quite spoilt by the huge selection of excellent restaurants that has popped up over the last few years. The wine selection was good too, however the sommelier was the cockiest, rudest sommelier I have ever met. He made me and the rest of the party felt small, stupid and unworthy of his time. <br/>For example, he poured me a glass of Chardonnay before explaining what he has chosen as part of the matching wine (it's not set but rather his choice), and I told him that I'm not particularly fond of Chardonnay, so could I have something else. He MADE me try it, and made an unnecessary comment about if I have tried every Chardonnay in the world? He then acted super annoyed when i told him, surprise! I don't like the creamy oaky flavour of it. <br/>The waitress who served us was abrupt and didn't look like she wanted to be there either. For example I was allergic to one of the items on the set menu, and I asked if that could be changed so that there whole party can enjoy the set menu. She said yes but we asked what it will it be changed to she looked annoyed that she has to go back to the chef to ask. <br/>I know if we had the service that we've grown accustom to in the dining scene in Melbourne at this calibre of restaurant, we would have had a great night. It is a total shame because I know the kitchen would've put a lot of effort into planning the menu and executing the beautifully presented dishes which were quite good. <br/>I won't be back, perhaps for a very long time.
Geoff Smith
Under seasoned kingfish starter- ok after we added our own. Comte Creme brûlée a nice idea, but neither sweet nor savory or indeed nice- should remain an idea. The rabbit pie may have been rabbit, couldn't tell as it was smothered in greasy cream sauce. The salmon was so overcooked it wasn't funny. The prices they charge should mean they take more care. We passed on dessert as we couldn't face another let down. <br/>Service was great though!
Therese.yuen@googlemail.com
Terrible service at Noir! We had the unfortunate experience of an extremely rude and dismissive wait staff at Noir last night - she rolled her eyes at us when we asked questions about the menu, seemed annoyed when we asked about the specials, she tried to remove my friends dessert while he was still eating... It's such a shame as it is a nice cosy restaurant, that has such a sophisticated atmosphere but unsophisticated wait staff.

My birthday gift from a dear friend ! The restaurant is small and cozy , service is excellent and food is undoutblely yummy ! --both presentation and taste! <br/><br/>Free pre- meal bread , complimentary little cakes , both look good and taste fantastic! Our shared entre - crispy pork belly is very well cooked and delicious . My crispy duck leg and breast - mmmm yummy ! And how is my friend's medium rare rib-eye fillet? He keeps nodding his head and smiles !!!!!! We had 2 glasses Merlot for each and shared a beautiful desert! <br/><br/>In general I am very happy with this place . Except the restaurant is a bit small and decor is very minimal, lack of premium dining atmosphere .After all we paid almost 200 dollars for two. <br/><br/>However they do have lunch special which is only 35 dollars include two dishes and a glass wine, probably very worth trying !<br/><br/>This review is based on my personal experience at the time of visit .

Dropped into Noir for a late night dessert and coffee and experienced great service and beautiful desserts. The creme brûlée tart was creamy and matched perfectly with the almond milk icecream and chocolate ganache. Yum!

Always a positive experience dining here. Can't go wrong with most of the food. Warm, cosy and elegant restaurant setting. Great service always. Appetisers are a true standout.

Went to Noir today for my birthday dinner with my husband. Randomly chose this place a night before and decided to book online via dimmi . Turned up to be a perfect choice. We both had the 4 course meal worth $65, me with matching wine with extra $40. Dishes were all stands out and waiters were so friendly .If you look for a romantic dine out with your loved ones, i will fully recommend this restaurant. Thanks Noir for delicious meals to wrap my birthday this year. Will definetely come back one day.

I had dinner here with a friend last month. We had the premium tasting menu with matched wines. The service was excellent. We had delicious wines to match each coarse and they were top notch. We were even given a generous glass of Louis Roederer champagne to kick things off. The food was all good quality and an interesting mix of flavours and textures. Only one of the dishes did not really work for us. It was a savoury custard and just far too rich for the second course. I would be keen to go back to try a different tasting menu.

Amazing food, amazing service and amazing atmosphere.  The food was delicious and some very different flavours that worked beautifully!  Fennel in a dessert = incredible!  Would VERY happily dine here again.

Neighbourhood restaurant as a tag seems a limiting, not to mention obvious, way to describe a place. Put in a positive light it merely means somewhere that is accessible to regular visits by locals, that has a comfort in belonging. It is rarely used in a negative sense the way “suburban” often can be.

I wish I could say how good the toffee apple soufflé with salted caramel was but I can't as we were told there wasn't enough time to make it. We were the early sitting and it was disappointing to be told we couldn't have something on the menu because it'd make us hang around too long. If they knew that was the case they could have given us a bit more notice. When mains are $40+ you set yourself up for a good night out and this was an ordinary way to end the evening. Mains weren't exactly value for money either - the steak was gristly. I did like the King Fish entree though, just would have been nice if my friends and I were allowed the third course we were keen on having.

Went here for anniversary dinner based on impressive reviews. We really wanted it to be great but maybe we set expectations to high based in the price they charge for meals. We had the saucisson sec was pretty tame on taste, the tartare was fine but the scallops with ham hock were swamped in far too much pea velouté meaning that it tempered the saltiness of the ham hock but overwhelmed the sweetness of the scallops.<br/><br/>Some 'amuse' were brought out which was a nice touch, however whilst the tartlet fillings were harmless the cases themselves were stale. The house baked bread bread also had a stale taste and texture.<br/><br/>I ordered the lamb for mains and it was cooked well but the dish as a whole was pretty pedestrian. The beef was ordered rare but came out medium with half a dozen or so iceberg lettuce leaves and and cut chips that had obviously been cooked earlier and poorly reheated. We didn't opt for dessert....<br/><br/>The staff were sassy but polite and I had a glass of wine that didn't work for me and it was replaced with another choice which was great.<br/><br/>All in all I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone as the price point it pitches itself isn't matches by the quality of the food.

Favourite restaurant at the moment. Quality produce, great flavours and just the right amount of creativity that keeps dishes interesting but not pretentious. The house bread is also very good. Excellent value for money - recommend the set menus. A wonderful experience all round.

The set menu was a bargain at $65 pp. I thought the menu was inventive (prawn soufflé!). All the dishes had great flavours but I found them to be a tad too salty. My favorite dish was the dessert which was very refreshing.

Celebrated the boy‘s birthday a few months ago on a Tuesday evening at the lovely one hatted restaurant, Noir. It’s a beautifully sophisticated restaurant with moody decor, lovely staff and gorgeous food. We decided to do the Menu du Jour which is four courses for $65 a head, and add a couple of dishes for the two of us.

Seriously great food, service, atmosphere. Been here once with work colleagues from out of town and was quite impressed. Delicious menu. Second time with different friends suggested Noir, and equally impressed again.

Oysters with champagne granita was exceptional, very refreshing. Was pretty blown away by their oxtail dish, the fish was a little overcooked and lacked freshness. Apple soufflé and salted caramel ice cream was ace.

First time at Noir last night for dinner with friends. <br/>Great ambience and excellent attentive staff. Exciting and varied menu. The food however left much to be desired in my opinion. Presentation was amazing but the food just lacked that extra oompf. My friends had great dishes but everything I ordered fell flat every time. Disappointed. I expected more for the price I paid. I was also disappointed that we couldn't indulge in the banquet even though more than one person at the table wanted it. I will give this place another go, but not rushing back anytime soon

A word on value: when a restaurant prices its main courses at over $40, they're making a statement to the customer about the quality of their food.  It invites a stronger level of criticism than for a cheaper establishment because they're holding themselves out as a higher quality place to eat.<br/><br/>At the prices Noir charges, I don't think the value is too far off.  The mains might be slightly on the over-priced side for what you get, but only by a few dollars.<br/><br/>For our main I had the Rabbit Pie, my companion the Rib Eye and we shared the gratin potatoes.<br/><br/>The rabbit pie requires some "dishing" at the table while a waiter decants the rabbit into the upturned lid of the "pie"... it probably takes a little too long in my view... maybe a bigger spoon is required.  However, it was very tasty.  The meat came in a creamy sauce - not so much that there was sauce running everywhere but enough to properly coat the meat and provide a moistness to the meal.  Flavour was also pretty good.  The parsnip chunks that came with it were delicately cooked and satisfyingly parsnippy.  <br/>Only the "rainbow chard" was pretty pointless in this meal - probably would have been better off with something like sauteed sprouts, perhaps.<br/><br/>Friend's rib eye was fairly thin, charred and fairly red in the middle.  Perhaps a little salty, but overall pretty tasty.  The sauce it came with was okay - maybe a little thin.<br/><br/>The gratin potatoes were perhaps a little firm and the sauce perhaps a little runny, but the flavour was good.<br/><br/>Dessert was the vacherin (with raspberry parfait, meringue and rose cream) for my partner and the pear souffle for me.<br/><br/>The vacherin had a slightly carnival-ish appearance and wouldn't have looked out of place at a kid's birthday party.  Flavour-wise the mix was pretty good, but probably could have upped the raspberry a little as the rose cream overpowered the rest of the flavours a touch.<br/><br/>The pear souffle came with a thin custard and some chocolate sorbet.  The souffle itself was very nice - delicately tasting of cinnamon and with a satisfying pear flavour.  The custard (which had the consistency of slightly thickened milk) is poured into the middle of the souffle by the waiter, was probably a little too wet and basically meant that there was a puddle of liquid left over at the end.  The chocolate sorbet was fairly nondescript.<br/><br/>So, aside from the notes about the food the service was a little slow - especially being brought the menus.  The waiter apologised for the tardiness.<br/><br/>Finally, there are a decent number of options for the gluten-free (although no bread).

This was my revisit to Noir. It was slightly disappointed in overall experience. They had renovated since my first visit. I do not mind the old or new settings. Good generally were very similar. Entree and dessert were great but the main were let down, ordered 3 mains the gnocchi, the duck and the pork belly.. Duck and pork were all without or too less sauce... Pork was too dry.. It wasn't pleasant to eat dry pork especially for a fan of pork belly fans... It was a great night... <br/>I would re visit just for desserts as they were all amazing!!!

Love it!. Went to Noir twice, all i can say is great food, great service and great dessert! <br/>It is a bit on the high end but definitely worth your wallet! <br/>Surely will come back for a encore.

No one likes change. Before the renovations Noir was my favourite place to enjoy a delicious, high class but still casual meal. The food was perfect, the music was perfect, the ambiance was perfect, and the little surprises were perfect. I excitedly returned to the restaurant after a long awaited wait for the renovations to finish. I was really impressed with the new decor, but who really cares about looks? The most important thing was that the comfort level of the new chairs was off the Richter scale. They are a great addition. Now the true reason that Noir was my favourite place to go for dinner was the bread rolls. They had perfected the art of bread making, and more than once I wished that i could eat the whole basket of rolls for dinner. I was quite disappointed that they changed the rolls. The next thing that saddened me was that they no longer give the wafer thin cups filled with vegetable puree before the entrees are served (unless that was only a dinner thing and it's still done at dinner time, then I suggest that you give them at lunch too because they are an exciting way to start the meal). Furthermore the entrees and mains have declined in quality and increased in price. I used to come here and the food would redefine perfection, now there are more flaws than there are mouthfuls. In some dishes it was the texture which was not quite right, others had too much salt or were missing an ingredient that would complete the dish and help to balance the flavours. None of the savoury dishes which I ate during my most recent trip were perfect, they were quite the contrary which is unacceptable for the prices. I although the savoury dishes are no longer good i would like to say that the new desserts are amazing and have even improved since before as well as this the waiting staff are as friendly and helpful as possible which was good.

Really happy with our lunch today. Wonderful, professional service by our waiter, every course was artfully presented and the flavours were perfect. Each course came out in a timely manner. Could not find fault!

Because dessert should be available for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Noir Restaurant is a boutique restaurant situated in Richmond, Melbourne. The restaurant has a classical layout with wooden tables and dimly lit lighting creating a warm and cosy atmosphere.<br/><br/>The service we experienced from the restaurant could be improved. We were shown to our table when we walked in, but no waiter came to serve us until we waved one down. The waiter who served us with the complimentary bread did not ask us which type we preferred and just placed a random bread roll in our bread plates. The waiters’ explanation of the wines were also very rudimentary, and everything seem to be just memorised with no further insight.

Noir Restaurant is a boutique restaurant situated in Richmond, Melbourne. The restaurant has a classical layout with wooden tables and dimly lit lighting creating a warm and cosy atmosphere...We ordered the Tasting Menu, which was $80 per person, and there was an additional charge of $55 per person for matching wines. Amuse bouche This consisted of three vegetarian tarts, being cauliflower, beetroot and pumpkin. A nice start to the meal. Entrees to share – Eye fillet of beef tartae, waldorf salad and gaufrette potatoes, Cold smoked pacific oysters and Hiramasa kingfish vichyssoise with samphire, sugar snaps and chive oil...
Stuck In Transit
I’ve been here on two separate occasions, and the overall food and service has been wonderful. On our most recent visit, we were a party of 5 looking for a birthday dinner on a Sunday evening. We were able to get a last minute booking at 7pm and were pleasantly surprised that there were only a few tables there when we arrived. FOOD On both occasions, I found the food to be excellent with a good variety to choose from on the menu. As we weren’t overly hungry just two of our party ordered an entree of ‘Eye fillet of beef tartare’ with waldorf salad and gaufrette potatoes. Presentation was beautiful and was full of flavour. The tartare paired with the Waldorf salad and gaufrette worked beautifully together and all the flavours accompanied each other quite well. I

Noir serves French cuisine in a modern and neat setting and was recently awarded one chef’s hat by the Good Food Guide. For midday dining there are lunch specials for $18, as well as the four course tasting menu, with a glass of wine for $35. Today I decided to go for the tasting menu...

This Noir, although it is open at night has charm which is very pleasant in the clear cool light of an August day. We settled into a table away from the door and began with our free glass of wine -  we drank more of it, later.  If you are having the special lunch you can dispense with the menu and all the studying and discussing.  The chef has decided

The meat was well seasoned and quite vinegary, topped with mayonnaise, pickle and a soft boiled quail egg. Spread on the thin crisp breads it was lovely and if I hadn’t already known that it was raw meat I wouldn’t have guessed it. The deconstructed Waldorf salad consisted of a cute little stack of perfect apple rounds separated by walnutty puree. It was a good match for the strong-flavoured soft meat. This was certainly a stellar entree.

Last week on date night, D took me to Noir. It's a small French inspired, contemporary restaurant located on Swan Street in Richmond. The newly renovated premises has dimmed yet artistic decor to make it a perfect venue for a special occasion. When D and I saw the menu, we had difficulty choosing so we opted for the tasting menu with a small change. We swapped the kangaroo for the mushroom pie, I am fond of french pastry so I had to try the pie.  We were given complementary canapes while we waited for our tasting menu to be prepared. Small pastry cases with a filling of flavoured cauliflower, capsicum and pea puree. It was a nice touch and a good way to start the meal. Our first course consisted of a few things to share.  Beef tartare, waldolf salad and potato grits made up the first entree. The beef tartare was fillet mince with perfect seasoning and just enough onions in it. Waldorf salad was presented in a deconstructed manner that made it easy to pile the salad and beef onto potato grits. Cold smoked oysters were interesting. The oysters came in a ceramic oyster shell in a bed of salt water and in a glass cloche filled with smoke. Next starter was the kingfish with vichyssoise, sugar snaps and potato crisp. The diced kingfish with the creamy vichyssoise (onion, potato, leak, chicken cream soup) worked wonders with the sugar snap and potato crisp. This dish was the perfect example of balanced textures and balanced flavours. Final starter was crayfish tortellini on a heirloom tomato with pesto and basil. Crayfish flavors were delicate in a al dente pasta shell. The tomato and pesto, gave it that kick to elevate it from delicate and safe, to bold and refined. There isn't that much creative flare in this dish but it was still a good dish. A pallet cleanser was next. This played on the gin and tonic concept. It was sweet tonic sorbet with cucumber pieces and the gin was served at the table. Of all the pallet cleansers I've tasted this stand outs above the rest. It wa

I was invited to a lunch at Noir (175 Swan St, Richmond) not that far away from my work place. In the Richmond area, there aren't a lot of stand out restaurants, so was really excited to try out this place. The restaurant is sleek and is beautifully french decorated and as the name suggests has some romantic undertones. We were seated at the front table looking out on to the street, so it was quite light for a winter's day. We chose to go for the 2 course set lunch with a glass of wine for $35. I started off with the Seafood chowder, not a dish I would normally order however it was served with Scallops, Mussels and Prawn toast. It was very nicely presented and the chowder was salty but well balanced with the prawn toast. For my main, I ordered the Beef Shin with Roasted vegetables. Wow, what can I say the meat was so flavoursome and you could instantly tell that it had been slowcooked for hours. T

Believe the hype, Noir is as good as they say it is. The food was absolutely flawless. The restaurant is cozy and comfortable, nestled in the midst of Swan St in Richmond. The food is modern French, and flavours, textures, combinations of dishes is fantastic. The presentation of food is gorgeous, as can be seen from the pics below.

Yea Yea Steak Tartare. A local legend in Richmond. Great menu, well priced and in case you didn't notice ive got huge wraps for the steak tartare.

Had the tasting menu and was very impressed. Attentive service and delicious food.

Just ok. Had bigger expectation but would say experience was just ok. The space needs some updating and the food was so so and the portions extremely small. I had the Pork belly, grey, not pink, thin slice, pretty unappetising and over seasoned. The potatoes were just ok. My partners snapper was better than my dish in terms of portion size. We shared the cheesecake- tiniest slither I've ever seen as a dessert...it was ridiculous. Wouldn't recommend or go back. Nice, sweet staff.

Agree it's not as good as pre-renovation. Entree, desserts and service was still pretty good, though previously it was perfect. Main course was actually disappointing. Used to be one of our favourites, but may not come back anymore.<br/><br/><br/>-----29 Sep, 2014-----<br/><br/>Favourite. Came here on a Sunday night with partner and friend and has become one of my favourite restaurants in Melbourne!! When first stepped into the restaurant I felt the ambiance let down a little bit (compared to all those trendy/ stylish restaurants out there), but actually it's not that bad. It just feels more like a friendly restaurant in your neighborhood, and it's actually a very good environment to have a good chat with friends. Food was excellent - one of the best in Melbourne - tasty and at the same time exciting. (I had the tasting menu and it's really worth it.) Service was perfect, friendly staff. Can't ask for more really. Looking forward to my next visit.

Disapointing experience. This restaurant is nestled among the trendy and low cost restaurants in Richmond. However it purports to be more upmarket.<br/>It certainly looks the part. That is when you can actually see it. It lives up to its name as it is very dark- too dark. <br/>The service is friendly and knowledgeable and the menu is interesting. Thankfully it is a modern French restaurant unlike most of the French restaurants in Melbourne, which are stuck in the 70's.<br/>It also boasts an excellent wine list.<br/>As stated it is very dark. In fact so dark that we thought it was actually closed, although we had a booking.<br/>I chose the smoked eel. It was disappointing and although well presented, it lacked very much eel. I had difficulty in the gloom to actually locate the eel.<br/>Our main courses, steak and John Dory, were really salty. I wondered if the chef had forgotten that he had added salt and repeated the garnish.<br/>The cost was in keeping with a reasonably expensive restaurant. Unfortunately the food did not match this.<br/>It looked like a good restaurant which made the experience all the more disappointing.

Anniversary dinner. We came to Noir with high expectations having loved the food and service at Social on Swan. We were escorted downstairs after drinks upstairs with lots of attention and care. Then seated at a table right in front of the door. We were moved and provided with drinks and then left to wait for service. <br/>We weren't sure if the waitresses weren't allocated specific tables or how things were meant to work. Eventually a waitress who recognised us as regulars upstairs came over and took our order. Wine glasses were cleared without asking if we'd like wine and eventually we were served freshly baked bread rolls. We waited for ages for more bread and had to look for a waitress to order more drinks. Our food was absolutely wonderful, small portions but beautiful flavours. We paid our bill and got up to leave without anyone noticing we were leaving. So the evening at Noir didn't have that nice cared for, served well, feel. The waitresses besides the one we knew from upstairs did not seem to have been trained in how to look after their tables and provide the perfect service; being there when needed but not intrusive. Left unsure of whether we should give Noir another chance or not. Very disappointing.

Wouldn't go again... Lovely service however, the food disappointed. The tortellini should have been advertised as soup - given there was only one piece. For the mains, the salmon came in two pieces and one was raw - a really unpleasant surprise. The mushroom pie was really good though. Wasn't impressed for what is such a highly rated restaurant.

The service, although a little slow initially, was very friendly. The food was spectacularly tasty and well worth the wait. I had the Salmon & my partner had the duck. Both were cooked to perfection. The wine list was extensive and informative. We will definitely be returning to this wonderful little gem!
