Review Quan88 - Richmond

John
Peking Duck Rolled Pancakes. Hmmmmmmm. Couldn't finish the pork buns but they were delicious as well. Just had entree size but huge serves. Great on a warm night with the shopfront windows open to the trees opposite. Excellent staff too.
Smita Sinha
Very average food. Everything tasted almost the same. We had ordered for a spicy chicken stirfry which was super sweet and bland. Wouldn't recommended if you want to enjoy good quality Vietnamese food.
Mike Hughes
Really great food that is cheap and authentic

Some of the worst food I have EVER eaten. Luke warm dumplings/poor quality spring rolls and inedible duck in mint leaves. Service left a lot to be desired too. I definately won't be back.

I went there with my wife and extended family. Half our food and drinks didn't make it to the table because they could not supply them or forgot to bring it out. The food was mediocre. To be fair the place was under staffed and there was only one cook. The staff were nice and apologetic. So one star goes to the staff.

Cockroaches everywhere, and the manager tried to rip us off by adding a couple dollars on top of each dish. After we called him out on it he tried to pass it off as an "old menu". Food was pretty good though, just keep an eye on the prices

Very nice chinese/viet fusion resto in Richmond! Interior is basically casual but dont get thrown off as we 3 found the food very good!!! The quail was amazing with a med spicy succulent sauce! Had the flaming prawns which was super delicious & the sizzling pepper beef! The Viet iced coffee with condensed milk was one of the best! Service exceptional...highly recommend this place!

Terrible Absolutely awful, I cannot believe I have to give a star, dumplings were cold, rice had hair in it, the chili sauce wasn't even a teaspoon smear! Tried to over charge me, was told it was an old menu. Unless you are literally starving, in Ethiopian terms you wouldn't choose to eat here. I cannot damn this place enough, I'm considering throwing up to make way for the toast I will eat when I get home.

It has been a staple for myself and my family and friends for five years, we travel 50mins to get the best Laksa and the service is above and beyond. Will recommend to anyone who loves Laksa and good Vietnamese food!

We were so so hungry, so we stopped for a quick Vietnamese feed and so glad we did. Quan!? Haven’t been here for years. I think the owner has changed, but it is absolutely fantastic asian food! Love the chicken ribs always. Much much better, more modern style. And awesome desserts selection. Good! Keep it up.

Had been done years ago. Went back this week. Awesome for a quick meal, was full which was a good sign, service was attentive and sincere.Good choice on menu.

We had peking duck pancake, crispy beef with chilli, coleslaw chicken, sizzling duck with Mongolian sauce etc.

Anyways. We had a great meal. My kids love the desserts. We will be back.

Walked out. Awful food. Both quality of ingredients and taste were very poor. Family of 5 hated what had beenso very good years ago. This place was a friday night special years ago. You could go anywhere else and it would be better than this.
Ruby
One of the worst experiences. No cutlery on the table nor sauces or napkins. Forgot drinks and when we followed them up they brought out the wrong ones. Incredibly rude waiter. Will never go back here. Ever.

Oh Quan 88, what happened? You used to be good- very good, and were my go-to place in Vic Street for more than a decade. I saw the other places come and go, some closed, some got a facelift and prices were upped. Even when your laminate tables were replaced with wood ones and you gained a liquor license you were still good and only upped your prices by a dollar or two...Your spring rolls were generous, the rice was good, your salt & pepper squid and roast duck with plum sauce were tasty and good value for money. Your Beef in Mint leaves and Chicken Coleslaw was sensational.
But alas, this has all changed. Was in the area yesterday and decided to have a nice late lunch. The BF was sick and I told him “what you need is a big bowl of Pho to fix you up, and maybe some Vietnamese Chicken Coleslaw”. Loads of places do this well, but we chose Quan 88.
What a mistake.
The place was empty, and with that in mind, we chose a table and sat down, the rather distracted waiter (who was playing a game on his phone) acted like we were a great annoyance to him for being there. He practically threw menus at us. We ordered Spring Rolls, Chicken Pho And Coleslaw.

All were measly servings and the rolls didn’t even come with enough lettuce for each roll or have the Vietnamese mint- just a single wilted stalk of regular mint. The Coleslaw ($15) was the smallest plate I have ever seen and it was soggy, missing a lot of accompaniments and virtually contained no chicken. The Pho was bland, weak and I swear the staff were just playing us for dumb western gwailos as the soup came out with no lemon, chilli, mint or bean shoots. By now I felt pretty ripped off, so I went and asked for some to be prepared to go with the Pho. They did this begrudgingly. Even adding the accompaniments did not redeem the bland taste and there was far too many onions in the bowl for my liking. I am not Vietnamese, but I could have made better dishes at home. The waiter kept playing his phone game, at one stage openly scoffing at us when I asked for cutlery, totally oblivious to another couple who were sat near us waiting to order.
Maybe you have kept the name and have new owners or new chefs? Whatever the case, it is not for the best. I admit, I live closer to the St Kilda Quan and hadn’t ventured to the original Quan for a while, so was unaware you had gone downhill. And I am certain I will not be returning- there is plenty of other decent competitors on Vic Street that deserve my patronage and money.

First dish out... Spring Rolls. Burnt Black. Couldn't believe the chef would put them on a plate looking like that .... couldn't believe the waiter had the audacity to place the burnt rubbish on my table. No wonder he dumped them and ran. I immediately called him back and told him to take them off my table. No explanation given. Next dish out ... beef in vine leaves. You guessed it... burnt black! What is going on in this place? It used to be good but I won't be back. We walked.
Tony
Go to restaurant for Vietnamese. Do not be overwhelmed by basic look and decor. It delivers where it counts with food quality. Can be loud and noisy;). The bonus is the small size of the cheque:). Added bonus is BYO with a grog shop across the road if you forget:)
Mikki
Don't know why this place is rated highly. The pho is below average from other places along the same street. But the non viet food that my friends ordered looks nice though.
Huyenng7309
Worst place ever!!!!! When we walked in noone came to greet us or give us a menu.
When given the menu like 10 minutes later, we ordered pho beef and i wanted pho beef with beef balls but they said they ran out of beef balls...

When our meal came there was no cutlery and no bean sprout either.....
The guy had to go next door to buy more bean sprout.
It could have been because we came early around 11am before lunch had started but still the service and food was horrible.
Never will return ever again!!!!!
James Arnold-Garvey
Don't know why this place is rated so highly. Very weak pho - no Thai basil or chili and way too many onions and spring onions. Laksa was watery and veggies undercooked. Roti was rock hard and satay sauce oily, grey and tasted like aniseed. Service was satisfactory.
Mrs Mark
Another Victoria St staple. Fairly speedy service and tasty food. We did order a beef dish but they brought out a pork one instead. The duck rice paper rolls were very good.
Luke And Hannah
Simply delicious Vietnamese. We tried the 88 branch in St Kilda and was very impressed so when we were told that this branch was the original we definitely need to pay it a visit. We started the evening with the tamarind prawn which was smashing good - the prawns were fresh, with firm meat and strong smokiness. The sauce was delectable - we love the tangy and sweet tamarind taste.

The second dish was the chicken ribs - which again was absolute yum. The meat inside was moist but the coating outside was crunchy and well-coated with delicious sauce. We even think it taste better than Gami! The batter definitely a product of some sercret home-made ingredients or techniques - it was really special.

The last dish was the red wine beef which was also great. The accompanying sauce was tasty and the beef was gave a light smoky hint. Overall, it's definitely one of the better Vietname restaurants in Melbourne.

Poodlelove
Ordered beef with pepper sauce through the uber eats. 85% of vegetables and only 15% of meet.. No cutlery in the bag. Just a small amount of vegetables in the container. Taste was below than average.
Jessp
Came in just for dessert.... Crepes werent on the menu along several other desserts.
Fried "iced" cream tasted very weird and wasn't battered properly. We all got given the wrong orders with different sauces on our iced creams. Not good.

Positives: Home delivery very cheap and quick. Negatives: Had prawn laksa but did not enjoy it, no noodles and strange dishwasher taste. Probably wont return.
A Girl With Curves
We ordered the seafood laksa for lunch. It was really tasty and had a lovely broth. Worth the try! We had it take away rather than eat in and it was packed nicely for take away.
Gee
Had a chicken satay and veggie lunch special. I probably ordered badly but it was very forgettable. May try again and order differently as it has good reviews on here.

Went to this place after work for a quick and cheap meal. I ordered the special fried rice and it was really delicious and filling. Also it only costed $10. Good service and overall a good experience and will happily go here again for a quick, cheap but most importantly, tasty dinner.
Mon
Ordered the beef and chicken pho. The serve was a bit smaller than similar Vietnamese restaurants. I'd have liked a few more noodles in mine. The broth was very beefy and rich. I tend to like my pho broth a bit more subtle but it was edible. The Vietnamese chicken spring rolls were delicious, crispy and hot- yum! I'd like to try this place again in future for something other than pho. The menu looks delicious and the service was great.
Emma Fox
This has got to have the best beef in vine leaves in Victoria St.... And then there's the chicken ribs... To die for!!
Then there's the coconut rice... The service is excellent and you can see the locals love it .... Have been back 3 times and it's consistently good
Dickmont Jones
Just came here for the Chicken ribs! As they were highly rated by mates. They weren't wrong. Just like how mumma use to make. Amazing sweet chilli sauce topped on crispy fried chicken ribs. Really bought me back to my childhood. I will be back!
Gabby
The pho is not a strong point here- was bland, lacked some of the more complex spices and was not served with mint. Nice service, but if you're up for soup go elsewhere.
Keith Lawrence
If you strike it lucky and the place is not too full, then this is as good as most Vietnamese on this strip of Victoria St. If it's full, the noise level is a real challenge - to the point where you'd probably want to go somewhere else or come back later.

A typically long menu, but recommend the Vietnamese coleslaws in particular. A mixed plate of spring rolls followed by a prawn & pork coleslaw = perfection.

Generous portions and staff efficient and pleasant.

This place has gone downhill (Oct 2017). Service was painfully slow (and virtually empty) and food not particularly inspiring with the exception of the duck. Duck in plum sauce was delicious and generous. Special fried rice was little more than soggy rice with peas and the deep fried chicken obviously skipped out of the pan rather quickly as barely fried never mind deep fried. Unlikely to venture back with os many other options on the strip.
Thao
Terrible food. There was a piece of cleaning cloth in the broken rice dish we ordered. When spoke to the restaurant manager, he said "it's just a piece of cleaning cloth, it's OK, don't worry!!" - I was like "WTF??". The salted squid was like it was cooked yesterday and re-fried again. It was very chewy. DO NOT GO THERE. I will never go back there in a million years
C
This is one of the more established and better quality restaurants on Victoria Street, serving up the usual suspects at least as competently as most for some dishes, and better than most for some. Can get very busy, and when it does it is almost impossible to hear anything - which can be good or bad depending on who you go with! Buzzing vibe, friendly staff.

Highly recommend the Vietnamese coleslaw, in particular the rare beef with tamarind sauce - bonza!

Visit this cafe regularly for soup noodles and it is always good. Good honest noodle soups at great prices (
Maggie Hunter
One of the best Chinese/Vietnamese fusion restaurants in Melbourne, this place never disappoint every time we visit. One of the highly recommended dishes is the chicken ribs. My goodness, they're divine!!
I Just Love Good Food
Always a fans of their chicken ribs with special sauce, heavenly gooooood!! Sugar cane prawn is my another favourite. I would never ever ordered any fish dishes from this place as I have had bad experience of the strange taste of fish from seafood crispy noodle. The fish fillet didn't taste fresh at all. Overall it's good if you know what to order.
Sophie
Our families go-to dinner destination my entire life. Never disappoints, service is always polite and efficient, food is always delicious and prices have never ceased to be reasonable. Such a great feed
Mark Harding
Disappointing. Sugar cane prawn starter pretty good. Seafood spring rolls and chilli basil fish rather ordinary. Spring roll batter was a crumb style batter and not really any evidence of seafood. The fish in the fish dish was certainly overdone. Not sure if the fish was fresh or frozen but underwhelming.

I've have eaten along Victoria St a few times when in Melbourne but this was my first visit to Quan 88. At first I thought the noise going on was going to get to me but it wasn't long and everyone at our table was speaking loudly and we were conditioned for the space. Our group ordered a whole mixture of dishes and we were more than happy with our selections. Really enjoyed the 'fish with lemon grass & chilli' but it was the 'eggplant stuffed prawns' that will have me coming back next time I'm in town. Good staff, great price. No need to byo to this one.
Mathew Hnoudis
Food was delicious and it came out quick too. Apart from a few errors in our orders, they were quick to fix their mistakes which was pleasing to see.
Matt Callander
I ordered 3 sets of spring roles take away. Got home to discover there were 3 lettuce leaves (for $27 worth of spring rolls) and some of the mint was rotten.

Liked it! will be back. I chose a family friendly restaurant and that it was. My kids were playing music with their chopsticks and the waiters didn't seem bothered by it. Fabulous food and lovely service, one of the busiest restaurants this evening in Victoria street.
Shellenewts
Great food & service. Love this place we ordered the malaysian chicken curry & the flavors made my taste buds dance. Service is very quick with a smile. They always manage to fit us in without a booking staff are very accommodating.
Julie
Serve size of Pho a bit too small but taste good
Love their broken rice with grilled pork chops
Kids friendly

This is my go-to restaurant for quick, fresh, cheap and most importantly – SUPER TASTY Vietnamese in Melbourne. We have been going for years and never had a bad experience! Stand-out dish for me is the spicy quail. It may be on the specials menu but it’s always available and it is pretty special! The prawn spring rolls are light and springy, served with heaps of lettuce and fresh herbs… and I can’t seem to go there without ordering the spicy, salty squid! Though all online references to this restaurant say it is open 7 days a week, I am almost certain that Sunday nights are a no-go… only because that’s when I often get a strong Vietnamese craving and am slightly disappointed to have to visit a Victoria St neighbour… I will do a quick check on an upcoming Sunday and revise this accordingly..
Minda Barley
The waitress was full of smiles although she couldn't really answer our questions and Steve wasn't convinced she'd taken our order fully as she seemed to write some dishes down but not others so we left our dining fate in the hands of the gods!
Fatboo
We left a sizeable tip because it was "good food", lol.

Whilst food was tasty( when served), the service was extremely poor. Like food but service unbelievably bad.. Have gone to this restaurant over many years and have enjoyed the food and service in the past. On this occasion staff acted as if we were invisible. We came early because of 2 year old child and restaurant not yet busy. In spite of this we had to get up and find staff in order to have a menu. Two of our party requested cutlery but once again this never arrived in spite of repeated requests and finally we had to approach staff to get it. Food was generally tasty but soda water ordered and never arrived, nor did the calamari dish. It appeared not to have been started so we cancelled this part of order. No apology was given. When we wanted to pay, the bill failed to come and we had to seek out a staff member. At no stage was there any apology and after payment the change was thrust out without any pleasantries and without a receipt. We will give it another go, but a repeat of this abysmal service will make us go elsewhere.

Always great. Still my first and only choice on Victoria street, and living close by we have tried most, each restaurant has their own dishes which they do better than others and for me Quan has mastered quite a few.

Order from the specials board, my wife and I usually get a few starters and share a main.

Rice paper rolls with just prawns (rolled fresh with out the pork)
Veggie spring rolls,
I love the spicy quail and the beef or duck mince wrapped in vine leaves
For the main we share the tamarind prawns as my wife only eats sea food. It's great, otherwise I would go for the fillet duck in Peking sauce, so tender and juicy.

The fish and chicken dishes are also good but the prawns and duck are the standout mains.

Grab a few dishes to share and everyone will eat well for about $20 each.

The restaurant is family owned and I think they have opened another Quan 88 in St Kilda. They have a few different chefs and I have noticed small differences from day to day, but the food is always great.

I noticed they started to sell beer but it's still byo wine with a 90 cent surcharge per person.
Greg
Pity that the owners don't seem to understand that this is a restaurant - not a crèche for their extended family- if you respect the sense of hearing do not go here- the kids screamed the whole time and played with loud toys and the parents thought it was cute. NOT CUTE
Somelikeithotmelbourne
Too noisy, ordinary, never again. Quan 88 used to be a goodie, but even though it looks better and staff are nice, food quality seems lower. Dry, bland spring rolls, tough chicken meat. Shame. Worst of all, it's so noisy you can't have a convo. Never again.
Natasha
Food was ok, not very special because it's not authentic vietnamese meals. It has been modified and it tasted ordinary. Service was good, and ambience is nice.
David_White
Special Spicy Quails. The food is delicious, well priced and often cooked quite quickly.
Especially, the quails are fresh & tastiee. We had da quails 4 da entree, then the Chiken Wings or Ribs [dun remember =(( ] with coconut rice - Strongly recommended.
The staff are always so polite and helpful as well.
Will be back.
Bvlpeoplesolutions
NOT new owners, & still great!. The owners are the same, they have just swapped their staff for a change from their St Kilda place. Have been going there for ten years, and I interrogated them very closely, when I noticed different staff. The owner still comes regularly to the Richmond restaurant, it is just another part of the family who were at St Kilda working there, and his family working at St.Kilda. The food and service is still excellent!!
Annedowning
New Owners!!!. Quan 88 used to be a great venue, however it's slipped quite a lot.

The food is not up to the standard, though they are charging the same prices and the service is just terrible! We had to ask for cutlery and plates and had to search for the waiter, and had dishes arrive at our table that we did not order, and some that we did order did not arrive!

Hopefully they will get things sorted!
Martin
We had Vietnamese prawn dumplings, chicken paper rolls,Chicken and sweet corn soup ,with chicken, cashews and veg,and Beef and back ran.Food was excellent ,generous and hot.Beef and chicken was not rubbery .Service was friendly and prompt.Only downside is that place needs a fresh coat of paint. The blue tak on wall was noticeable!
The Critic
Mmm sugar cane prawn.

Best vietnamese food i've ever had - and that's including vietnam!
excellent service, friendly staff, even better food!
the prices are cheap and you always know you're going to get quality food.
Ruby-Jean
Add this to your list.... ...of your favourite restaurants on Vic St.

Staff are welcoming and friendly. Menu is extensive and each dish is executed with care. Standout dishes were the S&P calamari, the 'cubed beef' (so tender and juicy - a MUST to order) and the duck spring rolls.

This place, although quiet when we walked in at 6:30, was practically bursting at the seams by 7:30pm - so get there quick!
Cate Leonie
A reliable favourite!. One of the places I know I will always be super happy with the quality of food! It's always fresh and delicious and served with a smile. Simple goodness!
Mosaic
ALL TIME FAV Vietnamese. I have been coming to Quan 88 for YEARS and their food is delicious! My fiance and I always order the vietnamese salad, singapore noodles and mongolian beef. Delicious delicious delicious! The food is authentic and reliable and reasonably priced. Always happy to support the place :)

Good. Been here about 3 times. Seriously don't remember anything that stood out as different to any other restaurant in the area. but i reckon that just shows how high the standard of the street is.

5/10
Mr. Sasquatch
So fresh and cheap!. Went to Quan 88 for the second time last night, we ordered mostly vego dishes and it really was a pleasant surprise - everything was tasty, fresh and not too oily or overdone, and so cheap - less than $20 per person. I can particularly recommend the grilled eggplant, but everything was great. So many places on Victoria St and so hard to choose, but this one is definitely a winner if you don't to walk out feeling sick because you've just eaten way too much oil & salt. But so tasty!
Fab Melican
Been going here for over twenty years and hasn't dropped off at all over the years. Went there Saturday night and scored fast service, fresh and tasty food and a lively environment. Its one of the best on Victoria st, if you're unsure of where to eat go to quan88!
Brendan McNally
Well it would be 20 years since I last ate at Quan 88 the food and value for money haven't changed a bit. Sadly the chrome and laminex is long gone as has the peaceful ambience.

This place is absolutely buzzing loud and proud. It was here that I was first introduce to the wonderful fresh taste of rice paper rolls. Tonight they were as fresh with bright flavour the Squid with snow peas and Chinese mushroom crisp and a delightful array of taste and texture. The Quan88 beef slow cooked in red wine was full of flavour stalking the palate. Service polite & efficient like only the Vietnamese can.
Roger Kaputnik
Thumbs Down Not for the Food. I did give it a thumbs down but I must stress that is not for the food. Actually that isn't bad at all, lot of the classics here and a few things with a bit of a twist. All at a pretty good price and the service we got from an elderly man was quite good.

When I went to pay though I was charged 50c more by a younger bored looking guy who was half way through his lunch. Now, not a lot you might say but that always bugs me. So after paying what I thought was too much I checked the menu again and complained. The only response was something along the lines of "Oh, we have changed the menu price but haven't got around to changing the actual menus". No apology. It really bugs me when places tell me their problems. I don't care and I don't want to know! If they had apologised in a nice way I would be fine but they didn't so I won't be back!
SherSher
Delicious, fresh and simple. Vegetable hotpot was amazing!
Tim Topham
Brilliant. Fast service. Great food. Im a regular customer and never had a bad experience. Love it!! Make sure u try the specials :)
Sammy
I've been coming here for years and the place never disappoints. Fantastic laksa, Vietnamese salad, satay tofu and coconut rice. Service is always speedy and with a smile. Love it!!
Adam Vail
This is a really nice place. My dad came down from benalla and wanted a cheap chinese resturant and this is the place for a beautiful $9 lunch with a perfect amount of spice that zings in your mouth. There is nothing negative to say about this place. The food is great, the staff have great english and are extremely friendly.
Dean
I have come home hungry.. because of the complete and utter rudeness of a waiter at this restaurant. I went to order a Vietnamese pancake after my friend did.. to be asked "why i would want to order that"... I said "is there a problem or something".. then I was given a dirty look. The waited relented and took my order (!) I let it slide.. because i had eaten the same dish there before. After my friend received his pancake.. mine was taking a long time... I went over to ask where mine was.. to be explained by another waiter that 'there is some old man out the back that makes them and it uses one wok at a time'. Thats fine.. When i received my pancake.. i was picking the crispy part off the side.. the first RUDE waiter.. came over and WITHOUT ASKING grabbed my chopsticks.. and proceeded to handle my food and dish up a lettuce cup.. and then stepped back and gave me ANOTHER dirty look... It was completely invasive..i felt violated...and it was degrading i had eaten a Vietnamese pancake before.. an offer of assistance or explanation would have been fine.. complete and utter rudeness wasn't what i ordered. I returned the food and my drink and promptly left. Disgusting. NEVER AGIAN!

A favourite. This is one of our most favourite places to go for Vietnamese food. Everything is reasonably priced and you get a lot for what you pay.
The Pho is delicious, it has a really nice anise flavour. It's even better after you add the bean sprouts, mint and chilli.
The rice paper rolls are fresh, and the peanut sauce is very flavoursome.
Spring rolls are nice and crunchy, beef-wrapped-in-betel-leaf-thing-can't-remember-name-argh is always delicious.
The honey chicken can be a little sweet, perhaps try in moderation.
Would recommend one hundred times! Two hundred!
Katy Ho
Friendly service, tasty lemon grass beef on rice and their vegetarian rice paper rolls. Taking orders was slow but didn't have to wait long for food. Overall, I think viet food is similar wherever you go on Victoria street, the higher you pay, the more upmarket the place is. I'd go again to Quan 88. It was reasonably priced and tasty.
Sammyg
Yummo. I have tried a number of restaurants along Victoria street and this by far is my favourite. The vermicelli grilled beef never let's me down. Service is always prompt and quick.
Christine Coleston
Went to Quan for lunch today. Very slow to take our order. Chicken ribs were tasty, had to order small rice as rice was not included with ribs. $3.50 for a tiny serve of steamed rice was a bit much. Chicken & corn soup was good.
Jason
Yummy!. Simply amazing Food !
Customer service was amazing and the best papaya salad with prawns!
Julia Eats Melbourne
Based on the rating I'm slightly disappointed. I have eaten at several venues on Victoria street and I simply can't see how Quan 88 is any better than the others. It's slightly more expensive (although still very reasonable) but the quality is exactly the same. I certainly didn't think the food was awful but I'm not sure why the rating is so high for Quan 88. If you want average Vietnamese food head to Quan 88 - or any other Vietnamese venue on Victoria st!
David
Best chicken ribs i ever tasted that spicy sauce was beautiful , becoming a regular for sure.
KYL
Everyone should try the papaya salad. Delicious! All the dishes we have had so far are very tasty. Staff are nice and attentive. This will be a regular haunt for us.
Jason Herbert
Delicious & Authentic. Quan 88 is in the heart of little Vietnam, with a wide variety of menu items you are sure to find something that will tingle your taste buds. Their mixed spring rolls and amazing and packed with goodness, their tom yum soup is super tasty and their Luksa!!!!! WOW superb!!!

Highly recommend this place to anyone wanting a great Vietnamese cuisine

Consistently Good. As we live close to Victoria Street, we regularly dine at the many restaurants situated in the shopping strip. We started off visiting a different restaurant on each visit but we found that far too many offer similar menus. Quan 88 is different. It has a more interesting menu and the food is consistently good. We now find it very difficult to try other restaurants in Victoria Street because more often than not, we want to go to Quan specifically to have the duck, or the Quails, or the prawns or the Vietnamese salad. And, it is excellent value. rarely do we spend more than $40 for the two of us. It isn't licensed but if you want beer or alcohol, there is a bottle shop a few doors down.
Dr Appetite
Authentic tasty food. Ate here for dinner last nite. There are a ton of Asian restaurants on Victoria street and my wife and I are trying to eat at each one, without repeating.

Randomly chose Quan 88 after walking by, and it was,a good decision. The "Bun" or vermicelli with (1) spring rolls and (2) sugar cane prawn were both delicious, with lots of crunchy veggies and tasty herbs, and very good fish sauce (I normally ask for an extra one cuz I like my bun "wet".

So good we would repeat.
Tae S.
Dear god- how have I not known about this place. Low maintanance. The coleslaw (don't be put off- its incredible) was amazing and the prices stupidly awesome. Very enthusiastic thumbs up.
Vanessa
A Classic. My parents and I have been dining in and taking out from here (and to Vao Doi, which was/is the same wonderful family I believe??) since I was so little that my chopsticks were joined with a little plastic "helper"! It's not gourmet, nor does it profess to be, it borders on westernized, but let's be honest, we're not all after coagulated blood in our pho, although I think that's on offer too. The master stock has been bubbling away no doubt the whole time, and if you can find a better dumpling and BBQ pork egg noodle soup in Melbourne I'd be suprised. Perhaps I'm bias to the flavours of my childhood...but anything that feels as welcoming as your mother's kitchen table must be doing something right.
Pavel Dean
Disappointed. Being new to Melbourne, and passing through Victoria St each day on my way to work, I was looking forward to my first vietnamese experience in this renowned foodie district. After reading reviews @ Urbanspoon, I decided on Quan 88.

We ordered some spring rolls to start...OK, but had better in many other places. for shared mains, we ordered sate chicken, dried chiili beef and mixed vegies. We needn't have bothered ordering the veggies - both other mains were top-heavy is chopped onion and green capcicums, which dominated the meat. the sauces were pasty and had that 'out of the jar' look and taste.

That said, the dried beef was the best part of the meal, just not enough of it and too many 'fillers' re onion / capcicums.

The service was inattentive and we had to ask several times for water, rice (which came late and wasnt replenished). The ony thing that arrived pronto and without being asked for was the bill!

For us, Quan 88 was a oncer.

Overly expensive compared to Saigon Rose or HaLong Bay (next door). Whatever u do don't ask for a banquet as they rip you off by giving you less food and counting 1 piece per person (some friends didn't even get one) Came for a b'day dinner (20 ppl) and I'm shocked i have to pay $70 ($35 p/p) and I'm still hungry and will need to stop by on the way home Crap place and very poor service

There really is only one word to describe the Quan.........DELISH!!!!!!!

Don't get the tom yum. It's made using a tom yum paste from a jar. seriously doubt places like these. why don't they just do what they know how to do properly/authentically? Frustrating!

Cheap awesomeness. Don't leave without trying the chicken ribs.

Been going here for years, and for good reason. The food is so good and extremely affordable!

Excellent Vietnamese food at a great price.. Victoria Street in Richmond is an absolutely legendary place and if you have not been, you must go. Quan 88 typifies the great, fresh and extremely affordable and delicious vietnamese food that is on offer. Try the diced beef in 88 sauce, grilled pork chops (done with chilli and lemongrass) or their wonton egg noodle soup (with homemade wontons), all superb and many more dishes. Bring your own beer or wine from one of several liquor stores within close proximity and enjoy yourself.

Yuk! I was suspicious by the complete lack of Asians in the restaurant... but we decided to give it a go anyway. It's not very often that I can't get through a dish but the grilled eggplant here was the most vile thing I have ever tasted (and not even grilled!!) Also, avoid if allergic to MSG - very heavy handed with it here.

Try the eggplant stuffed prawns! Delish!

Delicious entrees!! Duck spring rolls, fresh rice paper rolls and san choi boa :) Had prawn laksa for main, was also great-- a bit oily but this seems to be the norm when eating laksa out!

Quan 88. Best place on Victoria Street!

Great place, can't beat the fantastic service, value and awesome food. Favourite dish? So many to choose from but Crispy chicken ribs take some beating.

Noodle soups are some of the best around.

Mixed. Service quite good, atmosphere not bad, but a very mixed bag of food.

The pho is one of the worst i've had recently - far too sweet and the noodles were all clumped up, plus there was no chilli oil (only chilli sauce). The wontons were cold, floury and the sauce tasted like something out of a supermarket jar. Sang choi bao was acceptable.

If you come here, stick to the bottom part of the first page of the menu - "Vietnamese specialities".

Sensational. Quick service, delicious food. Scallop & prawn oyster sauce.. 5 stars.

Crispy Beef heaven!. Amongst the saturated Asian cuisines on Victoria Street, this restaurant continually proves best! The service is super quick and the dishes are full of fresh produce and quality meats.

Wonderful Crispy Beef!!! A must try!

LOVED it. Went here on a Thursday night, it was a buzzing atmosphere with lots of groups with multiple bottles of wine per table. we noticed the lighting was quite dim but other than that the set up wasnt as squished as others I have tried on Victoria St.
The food - amazing. the menu was very extensive and the hardest part was deciding what to get and because there was only two of us the waitress recommended only 2 mains + rice. And wow was it filling. We got the soft noodle seafood dish which came with a good balance of each type of seafood and vegetables. Watch out for the massive sliced of ginger that can be mistaken for onion though! we also ordered beef with cashews and vegetables which were very soft pieces. they also had coconut rice on the menu and we only got one serving (most restaurants upsell and charge each but this was not the case because the rice wasn't really needed but i just love the coconut taste).
We also shared a fried ice cream serving which was really yummy with a slight cinnamon taste on the batter.

Overall, 2 people - two mains, two soft drinks, dessert and rice = $42. loved it.

Loved it!. I've done just about every restaurant on Victoria St and I'm delighted to say that Quan 88 is a late runner for my favourite. Though I'd usually stay away from Vietnamese fare that borrows heavily from Chinese cuisine (I find the latter too heavy for my tastes), this restuarant blew me away with two dishes in particular. Their spicey deep fried chicken ribs were amazing. Cooked perfectly in sticky brown sauce, crispy and littered with shallots and spices, it was brilliant when paired with a Prawn Papaya salad. I can't wait to go back for more.
Add to this, great service, prompt food delivery, a generous BYO policy, and some nice icy cold glasses for your beer.
Two very enthusiastic thumbs up.

Yumm. Amazing Viet chicken coleslaw, salt and pepper calamari, and the paper rolls are great too :)
Fast service, good value

Friendly service. Whilst efficient, friendly service is not a given among the Vietnamese restaurants in Victoria St., Quan 88 offers both, along with pretty good food. Love the duck spring rolls!

The pearl of Victoria Street. Great authentic Vietnamese food, we dine here a lot and have never been disappointed. BYO inc beer makes this a even cheaper place to get fantastic food.
