Review Deko Boko - Richmond

Nichakorn Pongsakornsathien
A cosy japanese place serving donburi and curry on rice. The food are good, definitely a decent place for lunch. I ordered spicy level 4 out of 5 and I could not really feel the spiciness but it was good anyway. Not so fond of the fact that they put capsicum, zucchini, cauli et all on the chicken namban but ok. They also offer a range of matcha drinks.

If you grew up eating Japanese curry made from those convenient curry roux cubes, you'll be in for a treat. The curry here is homemade and you can taste it! Generous portions and you'll leave with a taste of nostalgia, feeling warm and full. The 2-in-1 deal of getting half donburi and half curry is an absolute steal, perfect for the indecisive eater who wants to try more than one menu item. I like that the spice level is customisable, so it can cater to everyone's tastes. (Note that Japanese curries are mild in general. Two of us ordered the '3' level but it was not spicy at all. Just the perfect amount of 'heat' that doesn't steal away from tasting the flavour of the curry itself, unlike some foods where the excessiveness spiciness ends up detracting away from the dish itself!). The soy matcha latte was thick and creamy. Despite ordering no-sugar, the natural sweetness of soy milk lended itself beautifully to the earthiness of the matcha, so the drink itself was not bitter at all. We were too full to try dessert, but there is also an in-house pastry chef making delightful Japanese-style cheesecake and other sweets. You can watch them at work behind a glass screen as you eat! My only qualm is that this place isn't open on weekends, so it's hard to take friends/family here during the working week! But we will definitely be back.

Ordered chicken katsu curry and chicken teriyaki karaage with miso soup in half and half. Great taste

The soy matcha latte is very good. Recommended. The matcha soufflé cake is soft and fluffy. Fully of matcha flavor yet not too sweet. We also had salmon don and 4 pcs kaarage for dinner. Overall, very good experience with Japanese hospitality and value for money meals.

Small cozy Japanese restaurant serving Japas style food and also bigger meals like curries and rice dishes. Curries are great and of generous portion. Service also very friendly and great. The dessert looks awesome but didn't get to try as we were so full from the curry. Food - 8 Service - 10 Vibe - 8 Price - $$

Nice place on Bridge Rd to get your rice fix. They specialize in Curry or Don buri rice bowls, no sushi here. 2 proteins to choose from, either chicken or salmon, 3 if you include the Tofu. You can select how spicy you prefer your curry, we selected the medium spicy but could of gone up a level, flavour was full and hearty. We also ordered the chicken Nam ban, which was also very good. There also offer cakes that look very good which we'll try next time. There is outdoor seating available.

The Fresh salmon Don and Gyu beef Don were amazing. Very fresh and generous portions. Great prices. Both meals were $10.80 each. Will definitely go back to try the other dons on the menu.

Usually come here for their epic gyozas, but decided to give their poke bowl a shot. Did mot disappoint, super fresh and filling. Always love having their matcha apple juice. Love this cute Japanese cafe

The spicy miso chicken karake don was really yum! And the chicken was juicy and crunchy and the flavour just right. But the gyu / beef don was below average! The beef was too fatty. Matcha was perfect real matcha tea! The service was a bit slow considering there was not that many customers it took awhile for food and drinks to be served. But with zomatoe gold it’s so worth the price and I love to go back and try other food.

A quaint little Japanese spot in Richmond. We tried the rice bowls and it was delicious, tasty and fresh with good portions. We liked the high ceiling ambiance and spaciousness, however it looked a little under staffed when we were there. Overall, it’s really great value, will be back to try more! 🙏

We discovered Deko Boko via Zomato Gold. Since then we’ve been frequenting this cafe almost every week. This place is gold! Delicious and great value for money food. Friendly staff and quick service whenever we dined there around 6pm.
Sophie
It was good value for quantity of food but the curry was supposed to be mild but I found it a bit too spicy. The service was very slow and not great, we had to find our own chair for our table as there was only 1 chair at the table they directed us to so it wasn't the best start in terms of service.
For the price I would probably go back and try something else.
Angela
We visited Deko Boko for lunch on a Saturday. The small cafe/restaurant has a very authentic and relaxed ambience with Japanese staff. We ordered the regular chicken Katsu curry ($12.80) and the large salmon poke bowl ($10.80). The curry was incredible and one of the best I’ve had in Melbourne. The poke bowl was also very good, but nothing too different. Both came with complimentary miso soup. Would definitely come back for a beer during happy hour (5pm-7pm) as they have an impressive drinks menu. Would also love to try their tiramisu next time!

This is a very good restaurant.
Good food, good service, good price.
Highly recommended for Japanese food lovers.

My friend and I ordered a drink each, the takoyaki as a starter and I got the vegetarian curry whilst he got the salmon poke bowl. Trust me when i say, this place is SO good! We were in the area for other reasons and decided to try this place as it had a high rating. I honestly give it 5 out of 5. I love my Jap curry and have been on the hunt to find Melbourne's best. I think I may have found the best... Everything was so fresh, the matcha drinks were yummy and also offered some unusual flavours that sounded awesome to try AND the girl that served us was so friendly. I would honestly drive to Richmond again just to eat here! Love, love, love!! I definitely recommend the curry!
Thats My Food
This is a Japanese restaurant located on Bridge Road in Richmond. I had read a lot of good reviews about this restaurant so I decided to try this place out. But for me, it was a bittersweet experience. I ordered a Chicken Katsu, Poke Salmon Don, and Takoyaki. The service was very quick. Takoyaki is a Japanese street food originated in Osaka. These are small balls made with wheat flour batter with small filling inside. These were quite nice. The texture of Tokoyaki was beautiful. It almost melted in my mouth after one bite. I liked this snack a lot.

Small cozy Japanese restaurant serving Japas style food and also bigger meals like curries and rice dishes. Curries are great and of generous portion. Service also very friendly and great. The dessert looks awesome but didn't get to try as we were so full from the curry.

Friendly service. Superb food. Delicious matcha souffle .

Excellent quality that stands out when eating the salmon sashimi. Very good prices. Fried chicken on point. Will return.

Visited Deko Boko twice within a week. You definitely have to try the chicken karage don and the Japanese curry. Portion was quite generous and price is affordable. The matcha soufflé was not as good as I expected but I would definitely be back to try the other cakes. Overall extremely pleased with the food!!
The Lambshank Redemption
What an unassuming gem! We popped in for some rainy Friday night Japanese. This place is great value - all of this food plus a yuzu soda and iced matcha latte was $30. The iced latte was sweet without overpowering the traditional matcha flavour. It was great to be able to choose the spice level of the katsu curry, and my poke salmon don had so much flavour and variety with a little bit of spice too. Their desserts look fantastic and we’ll be back for more!

Love coming to this place for lunch, love the matcha souffle so much :)
KLfoodfinds
Great value, simple and delicious Japanese rice dishes. I love how they added grilled veggies. Their Matcha and Hojicha drinks had great texture and taste too! And the dessert? Pure decadence 👌 #foodie #melbournejapanese

Nothing to fault at this place. The food was amazing, very affordable. The service was impeccable; all the servers were very attentive and helpful.
Yeschoo
one of my favourite places in melbourne. decent prices and good food and drinks.
Sousuke Higashi
Food is on point, dessert is the best. A Taiwanese pastry chef doing her magic on the dessert. Superb balance taste on the matcha Tiramisu. Everything is perfect apart from a distracted, deluded cashier lady. She seemed to be in bad mood all the time. We had to ask for water 5 times, and she didn't seem to understand zomato Gold concept. She's unable to focus to any converstation. A small pickle at the end of the dining experience, still worth a 4 stars restaurant.
Leo Kao
Amazing value - everything tastes fresh and the Matcha desserts are to die for. Faultless customer service with attention to detail such as twisting the handles on their take away bags for you so it's easier to carry, makes this place feel truly special.
Potatostelle
One of my favourite places in Melbourne for matcha drink & houjicha. The matcha there is strong but not bitter. Katsu curry is always good too! I also love the match soufflé cake with sour cream....so nice and soft but not too light, just perfect!
Snoopy
Love the Katsu curry don - regular , i think is one of the best I have with this price range. I like the vegetables are chargrilled a little before putting into the curry sauce. You can choose the spicy level, I choose medium, just nice but i might try level 4 next time. The curry sauce flavour is nice, not too heavy but yet can taste the curry flavour. Love the fried crumbled chicken, crispy skin inside still very moist. They will ask if you want the miso soup, but i think they should also let guest know that the miso soup comes with the meal as complimentary. The miso soup is flavoursome too.

The Salmon don - large is also very fresh, they also use a little vinegar on the rice, quite authentic style.

Karage chicken quite nice also, not too oily, we choose the spicy teriyaki sauce.

I notice they also have many appetising cake slices on display, will definitely come back to try some.

Overall for this price, I’m very satisfied with the food quality and will revisit again for sure.

Loved my dining experience at Deko Boko tonight. Warm and friendly staff member, cosy ambience and a couple of good reads about Japan. I had the Tofu Donburi as per staff recommendation and the Tofu was unbelievably soft and melted in my mouth. Mixed vegetables were crispy and well flavored. Absolutely enjoyed the non sweet Matcha presented beautifully. The menu had fun facts which transported me to Japan!
Ann
This place is super cozy place. Great service too. Desserts were a bit sweet for me but the food was good. I added this place as my favorite place. We will definitely come back!
Ira Felinski
The chicken katsu curry meal is great! Freshly made, super crispy chicken katsu on a flavourful curry sauce that you can choose your level of spiciness for. Included Miso soup is also nice and warming. Great simple, high quality Japanese meal done really well for a reasonable

No. Of Visit: 2
Overall Rating: 3.8
Deko Boko is a modern Japanese diner with simple yet very authentic menu. It's my new Japanese lunch fix in Richmond now ;p

High recommend: Dessert, anything with Matcha including drink, ice-cream and cakes.
Chicken Nanban Don - the tartar sauce is so yummy!

No-No's: order a large Don, because you only get upgrade of the rice, not the mains. It's better to save up space in your stomachs for desserts.

Had been here many times before and the staff members are always very friendly. I ordered a iced matcha latte with caramel with no ice as usual but this time, I was served with less than half of the drink. I paid $5.30 for this?! A 2L milk carton is only $3.10.
Sancho Pansa
Best Matcha drinks i' had in a very long time. Possibly the best matcha you can get out of Japan. Love the desserts here, the staff are friendly and accommodating. I always eat here if i feel like good quality japanese food.

Came across this place by chance as it is wedged in a row of shops along bridge road. The place specialise in jap curries and was def their speciality and have it done similar to the ones we had in Japan. Kids love it - even the rice! They had other rice dishes which was also superb. Great food, reasonably priced! Our kids already wants to visit again ...
Johnny
Love this cafe. So many delicious matcha treats. My favourite spot for a matcha latte in Melbourne with a great selection of authentic Japanese sweets. Staff are super friendly, great vibe.

Stumbled upon this hidden gem in Richmond while I was wandering around doing errands in the area, and knew I had to come back to try them out! Having been to Japan before, I can confidently say that their food and drinks are tasty and authentic. Their matcha latte, iced matcha and matcha booster (I tried the lychee apple one) were all delicious! In all my time in Melbourne I’ve had such a challenge finding good matcha flavoured drinks... but I have finally found THE place for them. Fellow matcha lovers, you will not be disappointed here.
For food we ordered the edamame and chicken karaage to share, and the ebi-fry curry, dry curry and spicy karaage don as mains. Each dish was a generous portion and full of authentic delicious flavours. The price is such a steal.
It’s a traditionally decorated small to medium sized space, with a view into the kitchen area. Service was slow to start, but the staff were attentive, polite and kind. Will definitely be coming here regularly! Unfortunately my phone bugged out and I lost my photos, but will attach them in the future after another visit. The drawings on the menu are very accurate!

An easy 4 stars. We were actually on our way to another restaurant when we walked by here and I suddenly felt like Japanese for dinner instead. The menu is rather limited (no noodles or soups) but that didn’t matter when there was a separate menu for drinks and dessert. We ordered the chicken katsu dish as well as the vegetable dish. We thought there wouldn’t be enough vegetables between two so in hindsight, getting 2 chicken katsu dishes would have been fine (as it comes with veggies). Regular size is plenty enough but if you feel like you’ll be super hungry, then you could upsize it to large. We also ordered the ‘coconut matcha latte’ which was perfect in temperature and sweetness. We ended our dinner with two ice cream puffs (sesame and hojicha flavour). We would have liked to try some of the cakes but it ran out fast. We saw lots of people ordering them (to eat in and take out) so next time, we’ll have to come back to try them!
Nice and cozy ambience. Friendly staff. **NOTE: Kitchen closes at least 20 minutes before closing time or restaurant closes even earlier (before 8pm) when no one is inside. No split bill. The miso soup is free (when you order the main food)

Lunch sets surprisingly affordable. Great taste, excellent service. Suited more to small tables than big crowds. Food took a little long to arrive, outside of that everything was really good. Would return.
Clare
We were lured into this cafe by the ice cream puffs advertised outside. It's unassuming from the outside but really lovely atmosphere inside and my matcha latte was perfect. It's clear that all elements of this cafe are very considered, down to the teacups. The food menu looked great... I will return!

Love going to Deko Boko. Food is great and whether you eat there or takeaway service is fantastic. Ordering over the phone was somewhat challenging with my understanding of the ladies accent but got there in the end.

What a little hidden gem! Tasty, flavoursome dishes and very reasonably priced. We had the poke bowl, spicy miso chicken donburi, katsu-don and the gyozas. The matcha latte was also very good and they have a great selection of matcha flavoured desserts too. Will definitely be back!
Nana Banana
Love this place! The chicken katsu curry was the best I’ve ever had in Melbourne! The poke salmon was actually very flavoursome with lots of spice. The batter in gyoza was light and tasty. The place was cozy and you can literally smell the matcha baked goods. Will be back to try the desserts next time :)
Li Lisa
Went to the shop accidentally after dinner because it looks really cute. We shared a pot of tea and a cake- both tasty and really cheap for the quality. Will come back to try more dishes next time.
Nay Nay
A cute little Japanese tea place. Loved the styling and a huge array of teas. Although the cakes looks good didnt try them at this time. The teapots were cute and well presented

Deko Boko is sister to the famous Maedaya situated on Bridge Road. Polar opposite to Maedaya’s night and darker character, Deko Boko is inviting and brightly lit with green, woody colours and has an open kitchen. Its home style and small menu resonates small eateries in Japan. What draws more locals in is their delicate matcha cakes and refreshing big menu of matcha drinks.

On the menu you have a choice of various curries and donburi which are both meat and vegetarian friendly. Donburi’s start from $8 (choice to upgrade from regular to large) and curries start from $12.80. I recommend upgrading your meal with a one out of the three sets. I upgraded my meal to the ‘All Set’ which includes miso soup, a choice of a matcha drink and dessert for $9.80.

For main, I ordered the signature chicken katsu curry and opted out for medium spiciness. The curry was fragrant, smooth and not too thick or runny. The katsu’s batter was crispy and juicy and the curry was thoughtfully not covering all of the katsu. The miso soup is a simple addition to the meal and will help clean your palate from the intense flavours.

The cakes were equally delicious but the strawberry matcha cake was a little bit too sweet for my personally liking. If you’re not a sweet tooth, the Hojicha will be more delightful. Nonetheless, the cakes were creamy, light and a good way to end your meal. Price point wise, the cake’s prices are a bit steep relative to the portion with some starting from $7. For the Matcha drink, I chose ‘Matcha Lychee’ – be sure to mix your drink to taste the tea. Otherwise, they also have a great range of Japanese alcoholic drinks if you don’t fancy green tea.

On the side, I tried the curry bread. Wrapped with breadcumbs and deep fried, it was crispy on the outside and a little bit chewy. It's a fun side dish to break in half and share with a friend.

Why go here: If you’re looking to try more home style Japanese food with some of your favourites, have a love for matcha, love friendly service, spacious, and bright interior- this is the place. It’s a humble underrated place.

The chicken katsu curry is a must try! Portion is just right, chicken was crispy and very tender. The donburi bowls were alright, could be more generous with the ingredients and cut down on the rice. But overall, food was tasty! The Japanese iced coffee comes in an interesting steampunk style glass and tasted good. Matcha latte was beautiful. Nice and warm for the winter, and very rich in flavour.

We were also offered some tasters for brownies and also the miso flavored smoothie, both were yummy. The brownie was soft and moist, very chocolatey. The miso is an interesting flavor to have in a sweet dessert. But if you like salted caramel, I guess miso flavored desserts work too.

Service was impeccable. From the moment we entered the place, the wait staff were attentive, patient, and very kind. I enjoyed the experience very much.

WORST SLOW SNAIL service everrrrrrr!!!! My mum had her meal and half an hour later then brought out my soup which took 40 minutes ......AVOID THIS PLACE!

This quiet little gem has become our favourite go-to local when lunchtime arrives. We love it. And, their Matcha latte is such a good alternative to our usual latte. A simple menu but always well done.

The best Japanese place on Bridge Road! A hidden gem. My partner and I come here weekly and love it! The food is always fresh and delicious! I get the salmon don with miso soup and my partner will get the same or the poke salmon don! Reasonably priced, lovely ambience and nice staff! Thanks!
Birdman
The gyozas here are absolutely the best I could eat 50 of them. Come with great little dipping sauces which just adds to the greatness. Have had the katsu curries before and they were also good
David
Far and above the best Japanese curry I have eaten in Melbourne (if not Australia). After living in Tokyo for 13 years, I have missed real Japanese curry/katsu-curry.
Also ‘Dekoboko’ is the only place I know of to serve real Japanese iced coffee.
The matcha sweets are sensational too.
Andy Doan
Went out for a group lunch with colleagues. I ordered their most popular dish Chicken Katsu and gyoza for extras. Both dishes were fantastic, gyoza was nice and cripsy and Katsu was delicious. The hottest spicy level is very lacking and I was expecting a little more. I generally can't tolerate spiciness that well and for me to mention about it means something. Overall great experience. Note that they don't do split bills.

Nice decoration place. Traditional Japanese food with ogawa coffee was amazing ! Definitely will come back soon and try motcha latte next time ^^

Deko Boko is a new modern Japanese restaurant/cafe serving up some well presented cakes, savoury and sweet dishes. Their desserts specialises in Matcha, a well known traditional flavour used in Japan. Upon arrival, the cafe was dimly lit and had a fresh, clean look. I specifically came here for the cakes however due to the time I arrived (6:00pm) there were very limited cakes to pick from.

Matcha Cheese Crumble: I assumed that this was their most popular cake because of the amount of photos I saw. Matcha powder usually has a gritty texture to it which made the cheesecake very dense and grainy. The flavour itself wasn't too bad, it was a mixture between bitterness and sweetness. I don't think I can get pass how hard and dry it was.

Blueberry Cheesecake: The moment I sliced my fork into the cheesecake, I knew I was in for a treat. The texture was smooth, creamy and rich. I liked how the blueberry gave a subtle fruitiness flavour to the cheesecake. I was in cheesecake heaven.

Coconut Mango Yuzu: Such a classic Asian combination of flavours. The coconut cream was light with a hint of coconut flavour that wasn't too overpowering. The sweetness of the mango jelly complimented the zing of the yuzu sauce. It was nice and refreshing slice of cake to eat.

Strawberry, Matcha and Azuki: If you love strawberry, this is the dessert for you. The Matcha and azuki was coated in a strawberry flavoured gel. The strawberry gel was awfully overpowering however when I ate it with the matcha and azuki, both flavours toned down the intensity of the strawberry. Under all those layers was a biscuit base which was strangle chewy in texture.

Earl Grey Berry: Favourite cake out of the bunch. I don't know how to explain the taste of earl grey. It's strong and distinct in flavour. Very much like black tea but a lot sweeter and citrusy.
Hello. Imnikki
The beauty of Deko Boko is in its authenticity and simplicity. The menu is very concise but covers most bases. The food showcases what Japanese cuisine is all about - fresh seasonal ingredients and rustic flavours. The service is a perfect example of Japanese hospitality - courteous, polite and attentive. The style is minimalist, and the atmosphere is homely.

Here, the matcha beverages are made the traditional way with a whisk. The result is a delightfully full-bodied, earthy and subtly sweet drink. The coffee here does not in any way pale in comparison to the matcha beverages, and can put many respectable cafes to shame.

The bento box special is something to look forward to when dining there. A rotating selection of meats, seafood, and/or vegges that are paired with rice, miso soup and a mini dessert - this is the epitome of a deliciously filling yet affordable meal. Don't forget to end your meal with the absolutely divine cakes on display.

I do hope that they consider extending the trading hours, and expand the menu to include noodles (udon would be nice).

From my opinion, Deko Boko makes the best match everything in Melbourne. All other cafes should come here to learn how to make perfect match things especially one cafe next to Luna park. The hand-made cake is perfect as well. They also have wide range of Umeshu that provide you the taste Japanese alcohol. Went here again and again, never enough to have one of the best Japanese curry in Melbourne. Friendly staff as well. I especially come here to have Ogawa coffee with their cakes. If there is warm Ogawa coffee, I will give 5 stars

One of the best teriyaki tofu n veg rice bowl ! Great service and yummy food . There's a selection of all things matcha - drinks , cakes and icecream too!

I came here to catch up with a friend who lives in Richmond. I have been wanting to try it as they served matcha. I'm on a hunt as my sister is coming to visit Melbourne again and she is a huge fan of matcha. I had matcha roll with matcha lychee & apple boost. The matcha roll sponge was just on the dry side for me. The drink is good but a little bit sweet, maybe if you are not a fan of sweet drink you could ask them to just add a tiny bit of sugar. The customer service was pretty good too. I would like to try their other desserts too.

Quaint little restaurant, with lovely staff. We sat outside and soaked up the Melbourne sun.Attentive service and delicious food. Happy to visit again.

I had Chicken Namban, nicely displayed on my plate of chicken, potatoes, salad, rice and croquettes. However everything but the croquettes tasted stale, and dry, like it was reheated a few times. Giving it a high score for the desserts! Matcha Swiss roll was the best, genuinely lots of Matcha taste. Houjicha Poire had a very fragrant Houjicha. I would recommend to come here for desserts or tea break. Didn't get a chance to try their large array of Matcha drinks.
Penguineats
The Hojicha Ice Cream was absolutely divine. With a bold aroma of roasted tea, the ice cream itself was full of flavour. The creamy and smooth texture were also welcome qualities and quickly made this a crowd favourite. We also enjoyed the Matcha Cheesecake. Combining the rich and creamy texture of an ordinary cheesecake, along with the fragrant matcha, the cheesecake was very palatable. With just the right firmness and coupled with a hard biscuity base, we thoroughly enjoyed the perfect combination of creaminess and aromatic

With that amazing Hojicha Ice Cream which ranks amongst some of the best I’ve ever had, I’d happily return any day of the week for more.
Lioslaith
We visited for dinner and found that at 7pm on a Wednesday 1) no need to book; 2) the menu is small and chicken-focused but the food was delicious - we tried the spicy miso chicken donburi and the chicken namban teishoku plate; 3) there is no plain sake on the drinks menu - your choices include wine (including Japanese wine!); beer (including craft Japanese beer); sake cocktails and ume 4) they still had what appeared to be the full selection of cakes at that hour which were great. The staff served promptly and were very pleasant.

A beautiful Japanese cafe sits idly on the side of Bridge Road flooded with cafes and eateries, offering something a little different. Deko Boko prides themselves on their high quality Japanese desserts and matcha coffees, experienced in their authentic Japanese-style venue. With a wall of Japanese products on display behind the coffee counter, beautifully-delicate and vibrant individual desserts in the display cabinet and Japanese kitchenware and ornaments on display towards the back of the restaurant, the cultural authenticity is ever-present.

Nice atmosphere here. New decor and new menu. Outside table is plus.Ogawa ice coffee is good. Also Staff are friendly and patient. We must back again.

Deko Boko is a Japanese cafe in Richmond serving typical Japanese dishes and an amazing range of cakes. I believe the desserts is also sourced by Kyoto Cafe in Eastland Shopping Centre, as I saw the chef making the matcha bear macarons. I was very excited to come here when I discovered this cafe on instagram, as it meant not having to drive an hour from the West to East just for the desserts.
Mundo Hana
Truely Japanese cafe with good atmosphere. Cafe music played in the store not only adds on to the atmosphere, but also allows customers to relax. This is the first Japanese cafe that I have been to that does not skim on the quality of their food. The customer service is good too: polite and non-intruding. Their matcha latte is a must-try! Not made from instant green-tea powder that most cafe use, they make it with Osaka sourced matcha powder (correct me if i am wrong - i have forgotten), whisked in traditional tea ceremony style and topped with properly frothed sweet milk. They do not even skim on their latte art, providing you with a perfect cup every time! Their handmade cakes are also a must-try!! They have new flavours every time. If you like a good feel of a quality japanese cafe, I highly recommend to pay them a visit. And, of course I will be back again! (They have to put up with me - feel sorry for them)

However in saying that, there is a very limited main menu for vegetarians like me. I usually go for either their vegetable curry or their teriyaki tofu don. They have nice vegetarian tapas which are good with drinks, but a bit pricy. Its kind of sad that they do not have a vegetarian ramen (made with broth suitable for vegetarian) or vegetable curry udon (i just like them!!). They also should look at either adding new dishes or refreshing their hot food menu :))

Despite that, love their food, their staff and the place. My regular hideout

After their revamp and renovation I was surprised on the improvement. Price is more reasonable and bigger portions. Also the fit-out us much more cosy

Made a visit the other day to have a take away lunch, staffs were very friendly :), heaps of choices on the menu. the meal was delicious, my orders were a bento and a matcha cream puff, they were so tasty. I am so satisfied, plan to stop there soon again.

I…love this place. Absolutely adore it. From their interior layout to their dining set up, from their menu to their service and friendly staff (literally everything). It was love at first sight at Deko Boko, a cute and modern Japanese cafe on Swan St, Richmond.I really enjoyed my first experience here and can’t wait to come back as I am writing this.

So good! It tasted like I was in Japan again. Goyza were amazing and the miso eggplant was really special. The service was great and the staff funny, great vibe. Will be back again (and again) soon.

Great little modern Japanese restaurant/cafe. Loved their curries but the highlight was definitely their cakes which are made on site. The service is fantastic and the coffee was top notch. Nice and relaxing environment, loved it!!

Great little spot and with lovely staff. It's not a huge menu but it has yummy food, great cakes and a good mix of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.
They've assured me their veggie curry is vegetarian (no meat/fish stock/dashi) so that's great for vegetarians. Everything we had was fresh and delicious and we will definitely be back.
Flora To
Very visually pleasant environment with just as great food and service. I had the chicken karaage curry and must I say, the karaage was cooked to perfection. I also had the matcha raspberry short cake for dessert but soon regretted my choice as I mostly demolished my friend's blueberry cheesecake souffle. DEFINITELY will come back and grab a cheesecake souffle of my own! 😊

Lovely staff- very good coffee- yummy cafe style Japanese food. Try the daily special or the delicate cakes-always a treat and escape from noisy bridge rd

I've passed by Deko Boko numerous times now and have read a few blogs that really had good reviews about it. For some reason, A and I are Japanese food lovers - that and the fact that I am still in my Japanese anime craze is of no surprise why I pretty much only have all things Japanese on the brain. I've been trying to cook simple Japanese food like teriyaki chicken, omurice and beef curry. I have to admit that I have these 3 things pretty much spot on but that's for another post ;)

One evening a few days back, I bought smoked salmon sushi to takeaway from here. It costs me $8 for just one roll of sushi, and I was hardly chewing the rice which was like stone.. If the sushi has been displayed for quite a long while, you didn't have to sell them or not with $8! There also was just very thin slice of salmon on it. The decoration was cute and staffs seem kind but this is disappointing.

W decided to give the new kid on the block a try and all really enjoyed it. Nice service and the price was quite reasonable as sometimes Japanese can be quite expensive. $13 for a main..YES PLEASE!!!!!!

Had a really good experience, had the winter Ramen special, took me back to a trip to Japan and the Ramen houses on the Nagoya alps, the gyoza had a very interesting sauce which was enjoyable, recently renovated and looks very fresh and up beat, desserts look amazing and would have to come back to try them all

Nice atmosphere and food with very friendly staff. WInter specials are nice, only qualm is I ordered a spicy ramen but recevied a non spicy version. That could be a good and bad thing depending on how spicy that may have been.

Would recommend for their cakes and matcha latte. Very well matched and made.

Deko Boko is a modern Japanese café where u can have a simple casual dinning or share a pot of Japanese tea with friends. They offer various options of matcha and green tea which are all from Japan. we went there for dinner and ordered their signature vegan / chicken curry rice ( price is very reasonable) , pork gyoza, matcha cake, and Yuzi green tea. I would like to recommend their tea and curry rice. The gyoza is juicy but a little salty. Their homemade matcha raspberry cake is special. Plus, staffs are very friendly and the atmospheric is really nice.

Dekoboko is a new contemporary Japanese place on Bridge Road. It is a casual place for everyone and their focus is on health food. It is serviced by trams and there is limited parking. They have a huge wine list and they have an array of Japanese sake and Choya neither of which I tried since I had too much alcohol at the Good Food and Wine show. The service there was very friendly. The place is run by real Japanese. The place is very intimate and they do have an open kitchen and bar so you see them making the drinks and food.

Ordered the pork bao, wasabi edamame and chicken don.

All dishes were tasty and well priced. $13 for a main is pretty good. All up was $25 each incl a wine.

Service could have been better with one of the dishes forgotten from my partners order.

Will return

This place is on Bridge Rd in Richmond. Zomato's map is wrong.

Anyway, I ordered the Spicy Chicken donburi, and it was awesome. The chargrilled red and green capsicums were a surprise, since I've never had donburi with anything like it before. Most Japanese people dislike green capsicums!!

Anyway, the price was excellent, and so was the taste. I'd happily keep this place on my list of 'regulars' if I visited Richmond more often!

Also, at roughly $12 for this, it seemed to be priced right.

This cafe serves a variety of Japanese classics including karaage, sushi, Gyoza and matcha drinks and desserts. The gyoza are excellent! Definitely worth a visit.

Cute little Japanese cafe just opened in Richmond! So many matcha options, from drinks to desserts to even beer! They have a dessert chef on site making fresh desserts all day so the quality of their sweets is absolutely on point. I tried their matcha custard puff and it was so so good, could have easily eaten multiple in one sitting - great matcha flavour and lovely pastry encasing the heaped amount of custard! Highly recommend giving them a visit, keen to go back and try their food 😊
