Review Black Gold - Richmond

Love HAWAII
I’m huge fan of Black Gold’s toasties!! If you haven’t tried them, you MUST try!! Everything taste superb!! My favourite is tuna melt…I’ve heard the tuna they use is not can, it is fresh real tuna!!! But actually it’s really hard to chose one cause I love their Chicken toasty, mushrooms… and other menu I tried were all just fantastic!! They use ONA awarded coffee as well!! Sometimes this place gets very busy but I think it worth waiting!! Just imagine the mouthful happiness…oh…I need to have one very soon!!!lol

Loved the coffee art and the taste of my flat white. Perfectly done! The toasties were substantial and filling. It’s a nice area for a weekend brunch. Will be sure to return!

The social media marketing worked. I saw their mushroom toastie on my IG feed and was craving to try it. It was pretty good and not overpriced. Not the best I’ve ever had but well worth the visit.

Date of visit - 03FEB2022 Nice little quirky Cafe on the back street. At times the atmosphere was awkward with minimal to no music playing, you felt like everyone could hear your conversation, personally, one of my dislikes. Good quality drinking coffee but limited selection, for example, unable to do an affogato. Food was fresh, needed a bit of salt to bring out the flavour in the omelet however there was none on the table. The accompanying spinach salad was simple, fresh and delicious. The value was average due to serving size v price ratio. Would I come back? Yes. South Melbourne's #1 International Reviewer for TA and Google

Excellent cafe with great coffee, healthy menu and snacks and very friendly and welcoming staff. A treat everytime I visit, especially during and post lockdowns.

Excellent coffee and very professional service. One the best toastie that I ever had. Please give them a visit.

Well above the average coffee and beautifully presented food from this (slightly) hidden gem in Richmond. Added bonus is they have Butterbing cookies available (grab one on your way home and enjoy).

Two of us came here on a Saturday around 9am. It was already pretty busy, but we got a table inside. Friendly and efficient service. The toasties were super tasty and good value. I had the Caprese and will definitely get it again. Coffee was good. They let us pay separately, which is a big tick for me! The only issue was how cold it was inside when the door was open. We had to put on our jackets and scarves.

A cosy unpretentious local cafe with great coffee and an airy chilled vibe. The green fritters are simply flawless and SO TASTY! If you’re tossing up what to order please do yourself a favour and order the green fritters!

ready for the weekend
🦀 crab benedict ($21AUD ~470฿)
🍓 granola bowl ($15AUD ~340฿)
🏚: Black Gold
📍: Lennox St, Richmond, Melbourne
————————————————————
📝: From the legendary chef that brought you Bistro Thierry, Maha, Le Bouchon and Smith + Singleton, Chef Azam Dzevlan and his wife opened up a cafe in a quiet neighborhood of Richmond, hidden away from the bustling life of the CBD.
.
The premium cafe, Black Gold, as the name suggests, uses only the finest produce from locally sourced providers. Thus the menu is set to change seasonally, depending what’s fresh at the market, for maximum quality and flavour.

❤️: Hurry and head to Black Gold for one of the best egg benedicts you’ll ever taste. And to make it all the more better, it’s topped on a succulent crispy soft shell crab. Nothing can be more satisfying than that yolk (swipe left! ⬅️) slowly oozing out from that perfectly cooked poached egg.

Their granola bowl is not to be missed as well. This beautiful bowl of happiness and creamy butter will only last for another 2 weeks before it says goodbye along with the rest of the summer menu! So head there now before they’re gone!

We ordered a chilli scramble and avocodo/salmon toast, as well as coffee. The coffee was brought out quickly and was good. When we mentioned after 45 minutes that other people that arrived later were getting their food orders before us, the waitress checked and realised she forgot to put our order through. She said this is partly because we moved our table outside to inside. She said that because she didn’t notice us outside, she cancelled our order. I would have assumed the other waitress that moved us would have updated our table but it appears they didn’t. We received two coffees on the house for this mistake. The food was nice but doubt we will make a return visit.

Fabulous Cafe - Service fantastic. The mushies on toast and chilli crab scramble was so full of flavour. We shared the pancakes and wow they were the most beautifully plated dish I have ever seen - tasted amazing too! Very nice coffee and turmeric latte was very smooth. Highly recommend this place.

WOW what an amazing cafe - the menu is absolutely delicious - and the coffee is sooo good!!! Had the Greens Dish, Pancakes and salmon Benny - so full of flavour and great portions sizes. Also the coffee was just perfect, could say best I’ve had to date in Melbourne. The staff were great, super friendly and efficient. Great vibe too! My New Fave - coming back ASAP.

My breakfast here was PHENOMENAL! The corn and zucchini fritters were next level to-die-for. Generous and fresh, I could have eaten them all darn day. My friend's smashed avo was a bit of a let down. It was presented beautifully - almost too stunning to eat - but it was a tiny serving. Just one slice of bread with the toppings. The poor mite was so hungry, and his single serve of toast just didn't cut it. Coffee and chai both excellent. I will be back for the fritters for sure!

**Overall rating 3.5/5**

Probably better as a grab and go place rather than dine in, just due to the limited space.

SERVICE: 4.5/5
They were friendly and very attentive throughout. Coffee and food did not take long at all. The waitress was always keeping an eye on the tables and ready to serve. It was a lovely and relaxed dining experience.

FOOD: 4/5
There was a reasonable amount of selection on the menu however I opted for the smashed ago & haloumi from the Something Simple specials menu. It really was that, clean and simple. The ingredients were fresh and flavoursome - couldn't fault anything. The haloumi was extra tasty. I did notice that the prices were a little higher here, expected at more trendy up-market cafes. I also had a magic (coffee) which was perfect!

AMBIENCE & DECOR: 3/5
Simple and quite minimalistic. The hung plants added a nice touch. The space itself is small and in a little bit of an usual shape floodplan. It looks like it's been sectioned off from a main space to dedicate to coffee. There is a glass wall (partition) which separates the cafe from a neighbouring office/business. You can see shadows of people through the window. Not a bad thing, just different.

KID FRIENDLY:
Doable, not too much space so leave your pram behind if you can but there were a coh ole of people who brought their babies in with them.

The Açai pancakes were great! They were super filling and the ricotta was really nice. I only wish it had said what fruit was going to be on the plate so I could’ve asked for certain ones!

Have been here a few times now, and still nothing bad to say! Lovely staff, they were so kind and very quick to take and serve orders. Food is lovely although the choices are a little limited. Great interior design, very cozy but modern looking!

Love this place! Had breakky for the first time this morning, and exceeded my expectations!

I had the crab Benedict and it was yum! Crabmeat, coleslaw, siracha hollandaise and avocado, what a combo! Can’t wait to go back

As a food lover I have visited several places so far and I’m very honest with my reviews. And I have to say that after being here two times, I will not visit this place again.

Of course that opinions are always subjective but this were my two experiences with this place:

- I won a giveaway on Instagram (they host a ‘Win a dish Friday’ every Friday) and obviously got really excited to try this place with such instagramable pictures and apparently very high reputation. Once I arrived at the venue I was politely welcomed but not that warm, genuine welcome that makes you feel like cafes are truly happy to have you there.
I had won the porridge meal and after introducing myself to the staff at the counter, the waitress led me to a table and I patiently waiting around the 15 minutes to be served (even tho the venue only had two more costumers at the time). In terms of food, my high expectations were definitely not met and the food did not stand out and was nothing special. Good consistency and portion but lacking flavour. But this wasn’t the main thing. Everyone who cares about providing good content knows that usually exterior lighting is better than indoors (you can even see the difference in pictures) and even though it was raining I went outside and tried to take a better picture to post in appreciating of having won the giveaway. Not only did I get stares from the staff but felt laughed at and quite uncomfortable to say the least.

- The second time, I went there with a friend. I had seen they had a new addition to the menu and their advertising strategies were so empowering that there wasn’t a day I wasn’t seeing their ads on Instagram. The newly beautiful granola bowl definitely caught my eye and I decided to give this place another go.

Again, went we got inside the cafe, it wasn’t very busy but the waitress didn’t show much interest or warmth towards us. We asked for two smoothies and my friend asked for the pancakes and I went for the bowl. The serving itself was quite small which was a true disappointment (clearly evident in the top view picture). In regards to the granola, I am not sure which brand they use but i personally found it too sweet and adding peanut butter to that made it even more sickening. My friend was happy the flavour and consistency of the pancakes but said that calling acai pancakes to that when the only piece of acai is about one tablespoon is ridiculous to say the least.
Similarly to what had happened the previous time me and my friend went outside to take some pictures and were clearly stared at and borderline mocked by the staff (surprisingly the other costumers didn’t even looked or commented. And no, we didn’t step on benches or took much time to take the pictures). One of the waitresses even came outside as we finished taking pictures and dropped a line in a sarcastic tone ‘are you done?’. We sat down and had our meal and during our conversation my friend even commented with me that it seemed that the waitress was grumpy and rude and she mentioned the service was terrible.

Like I said, my experiences were definitely something I don’t want to repeat. Owning a cafe and providing a service to the public should bear in mind the multiple aspects of the experience and it’s not only about making instagramable looking meals.

After that second visit I think I don’t need to put myself in a situation and location where I don’t feel welcomed. Eating out and having a meal at a venue should be an experience to be remembered, filled with good food, passion and laughs and this venue didn’t tick any of that and even made me feel uncomfortable. And no one should feel that way. Therefore I don’t recommend this place.

Simple but hey, there’s nothing wrong with that!

FOOD: I ordered the granola bowl with only coyo instead of regular yoghurt and it was pretty good! Super simple but exactly what I asked for :) The granola was abit hard to crunch on at times, unfortunately but other than that, it was a perfectly simple dish and I can’t wait to try their other dishes! (I’m looking at you, Acai Pancakes 👀). I took away their carrot loaf and though it’s not pictured, it deserves some recognition and love! It was really pleasant and mild but super moist and amazing! I’ll definitely take it away again!

COFFEE: Now, this was a show stopper! I had a bad experience with a macadamia milk latte so I was really contemplating on whether to give Black Gold’s a shot and they didn’t disappoint! I’m usually a soy milk latte gal but don’t hesitate to give their macadamia milk latte a try! It wasn’t watery AT ALL and was really quite delightful, highlighting the key notes of the coffee meanwhile providing a light milky taste

SERVICE: The service was lovely and the servers were really pleasant, kind and attentive!

I’d definitely come back again to give their other foods a try and it’s such a beautiful cafe interiorly! It really is a cafe to visit if you just want a chill day to relax or just some good food

Came here for brunch with a friend, and it exceeded my expectations! Coffee was great, service was prompt, and the food was full of flavour. Plus no wait on a Sunday! I had the crab Benedict and absolutely loved the combo of egg, crab, sriracha hollandaise and the coleslaw; so glad I picked that dish. But now I’m definitely keen to go back and try a few more dishes!

The food was great. The mushroom toast was really good and I loved the mushroom ketchup. And we tried the spicy crab toast it was a bit hit too. Coffee is amazing. Love the atmosphere . Soo sad the soft shell crab wasn’t available for lunch. I’ve heard that’s it’s really great and it runs out quickly.

This is one of my favourite breakfast spots in Melbourne. Located just down the street from me, I see myself being a frequent visitor.

Coffee: Very good, and lots of fun options on the menu for those that like to explore various coffee drinks. I typically stick to my long blacks or batch brews, and they certainly don't disappoint here.
Presentation: Some of the best breakfast plating in Melbourne. If you are into food photography, you will be a happy camper here. The food just looks inviting!
Food: Delicious! I've sampled three items on the menu: mushies on toast, avocado toast, and the acai pancakes. All have been spectacular. I have my eye on other items on their menu, but it will be hard to not order any of these dishes again.

Great coffee and very delicious brunch in Richmond! I would love to spend my brunch here over and over again. Never be disappointed with the coffee there, made with love! Always get my lovely long black there. Delicious!

I’ve tried soy latte, almond latte, oat latte, and then Black Gold has macadamia milk which is not as common in many cafes. I tried their macadamia latte and I loved it. As for the food, I had a delicious plate of Crab Benedict. The portion may look small but once I was done, I actually think it was the perfect portion. I want to come back for their acai pancakes for sure.

Pancakes are a must! Tasty, fresh! Smashed avocado great also.. Coffee is perfect. Can’t wait to go back.. probably need more room. Couldn’t fault it

I had a lot of expectations before going to this place as they became very popular in social media.
The food was nice but the waitress was a bit rude to us.

To me what makes a good coffee place great is the staff, good coffee places have great coffees and food, great places have amazing staff with it and Black Gold is just that. I moved to richmond for work not long ago and black gold is the place i walk past everyday after i parked. After a couple of days Aisha (one of the baristas) already remember my coffee, look this might seem like a small thing for baristas but as a customer i think its bloody amazing memory power considering the amount of coffee orders they have to deal with everyday. And this is not just me, they do the same with other regulars. Now i have tried their cakes and pastries ( very good quality if they source it from a wholesaler) but their in house items are great, had a few different sandwiches there and they are just so tasty! I am spoilt for choice in richmond and there are other good coffee shops there but i just cant be bother to be a regular elsewhere than black gold.

Nice food and friendly staff. What else would you want from brunch cafe? Not too busy not too quiet. Had a good time and would like to go back.

This cafe has become more popular in the past months, we live just walking distance but never went. We finally decided to go it a go and luckily they didn’t disappoint us. Staffs were friendly and coffee was strong and yummy, food was tasty and worth to go back again for.

A little cafe with lovely staff and a wonderful atmosphere. There’s limited seating (indoor & outdoor). The interior is neat and simple, with the addition of some hanging plants and pot plants. The smash avo had an interesting twist - one that we appreciated (house made haloumi fries). The acai pancake was warm and fluffy whilst the seasonal fruits were fresh and tasty. Both dishes were visually appealing and served in generous portions. The coffee and tumeric latte were also delicious. (We added sugar for a more sweeter taste though.) Overall, we were very happy with this place.

3.5
We called into Black Gold for a much needed coffee on the way to the Grand Final. The venue sits on the mostly residential Lennox Street and had quite a good atmosphere when we came in to order. We had lattes and long blacks and also tired some of their walnut and also their citrus and cranberry breads toasted and buttered. Coffee was good (and much better than at the Gee) so a no brainer really. Staff served us well despite the fact that we were decked out in Collingwood attire... noice!
We were excited to try Black Gold and the food was nice. However, after having brekky, juices and coffees (a decent bill) I would never have expected to be hassled and asked by staff to vacate after just one hour! We were shocked and left feeling very disappointed and unvalued.

Came here a while ago with some friends and ordered the chilli crab scramble, scrambled eggs on toast, not another smashed avo, and gnocchi!

The place itself was rather tight, with little seats available. Tables were placed very close to each other as well, so this isn’t the place for a peaceful brunch and deep conversation.
The staff however, were friendly and was efficient in getting our orders.

Chilli crab scramble: The presentation was rather messy and sloppy, not the most instagrammable dish haha but we all agreed that the taste makes up for it! Definitely order it if you want a different twist to the ordinary scrambled eggs and toast.

Scrambled eggs on toast was simple and delightful, with generous ingredients.

For myself, I ordered the “not another smashed avo” with mushrooms on the side, and was very impressed with the food presentation. Looked like an art piece! Although every element of the dish complimented each other, I felt that the pita bread was too soft and chewy and did not complement the smashed avo as well as I expected. If it was toasted, it might have been better?

The gnocchi portion was also generous and beautifully plated. The pumpkin purée really elevated the gnocchi and brought the dish together.

I would come back again, but probably not on a weekend afternoon just because of the crowd and lack of seats.
Erin Rusic
Great little cafe with easy parking, bit pricey on the juice at $6 for a small glass but other than that the food was beautifully presented with a wide selection of fruit including apples which I don’t always see! Definitely worth the visit

In this squishy space off the main strip lies a local gem to enjoy good quality Sunday brunch. We made our selections from the small but varied menu and started eyeballing all the temptations coming out from the kitchen.

My Acai Pancakes were beautifully framed with an array of fruits and flowers. The texture was more bread than pancake (is it meant to be like that?) but it was still delicious, complemented by the whipped ricotta and toasted coconut. My friends loved their Chilli Crab Scramble and Green Fritters, with artful use of spices and ingredients to create taste and flavour.

Friendly service buoyed by the server and one of our friends both originating from Hamburg, the offerings here deserve their high ratings. There are too many tables and chairs for the real estate available, making the high density quite uncomfortable. This was exacerbated when the group beside us tried to squeeze 6 people in a spot that's better for 2-3!
Decent Feed
My partner and I visited Black Gold hankering for some high quality brunch and that’s exactly what we got. I ordered the Brisket Benny, a dish that has a spot on most café menus, but is done exceptionally well at Black Gold. The rich hollandaise, egg and whatever else is on the plate is great, but all you’ll be thinking about for the rest of your week, perhaps life, is the beef and how succulent it is. I normally scoff at descriptors like ’12 hour slow cooked’ ‘grass fed’ but when I finished my meal, I genuinely believed that Black Gold have slow cookers on overnight and that these cows lived their best possible lives. Probably one of the top few, if not the best Benedict dish that I’ve had so far.

We also ordered the Mushies on Toast- a staple brunch dish that delivers simplicity with great flavour. With one poached egg, one slice of buttered sourdough toast, and a handful of mushrooms all laid on their version of ‘mushroom ketchup’, we can’t deny how tasty it is. The only thing was that towards the last few bites, the mushroom ketchup flavour was getting a bit heavy, and quite overpowering- got a little sickening in the end.

Nevertheless, Black Gold is a small cafe offering big flavours and enjoyable dishes!

Nice setting. Staff were lovely. Ordered the crab meat scrambled eggs and my friend ordered the mushroom dish. They were both awesome. Scrambled eggs were perfectly silky & the crab meat delicious. My feedback is that neither dish were that large. I think if you were super hunrgy, you'd want to order a couple of sides. Although, food is pretty pricey. I would be interested in coming back to try the sandwiches, they look great & more on the cheap side too. Also, wait staff could be a little more attentive early on.
Ceenin
Came here for breakfast, so I had the apple crumble porridge and a cap. Food was beautiful and the staff were amazing. Place is a bit small, so difficult to grab a seat but the ambience makes up for that.
Tess Presso
This place is tiny, but what they lack in space they make up in flavour and service. Coffee is roasted by Ona, which is a roaster based in Canberra. The menu is super creative, and the hot cakes are a must.
Fit & Fed Foodie
The name says it all! Black Gold. The coffee was certainly black liquid gold in my books and this beautiful pineapple super bowl was deliciously refreshing! A little lack in actual granola which I was expecting but great nonetheless
Rebecca Lowrey
Amazing food and great service. Yummy selection of food on menu. This is our go to cafe! You have to try the gnocchi it’s sensational 😋 Delish!
Ross Crisp
Ticks all the boxes: friendly efficient service, great food and coffee. It is a small place so it might be hard to get a table when busy. Off the main strip, so parking is no problem.

> Apple crumble porridge with five grain porridge, apple berries, macadamia nuts + almond mylk AND Not another smashed avo with soft pita bread, smashed avocado, baby carrots, heirloom beetroot, yarra valley fetta, mint + pistachios AND Acai pancakes with whipped ricotta, vanilla bean, toasted coconut, seasonal fruit, acai, dessert lime and peper gel <

Black Gold is a very classy and clean café in the heart of Richmond. Their interior is absolutely stunning, and the exterior is just as beautiful! The staff are really friendly and the menu is well thought out.
A dish perfect for those colder Melbourne days, the apple crumble porridge is perfect for a full body warming meal. the aromas tickle your nose just before you take the first bite. The porridge itself has a really nice texture and is not too watery. The overall flavour of the dish is quite sweet due to the poached apples and incredible crumble. This is a very large dish so I do recommend trying it if you're hungry and are wanting something warmer. Out of the three that we tried, I think this was my favourite!

I loved how they took a risk and did a twist on the smashed avo. Not being typical, they added so many elements that you do not usually see. The pita bread was nice and crunchy which contrasted the soft avo texture. The baby carrots were soft as well and were quite sweet. The feta also added a sweeter flavour, which really enhanced the flavours of the avocado. A very well made and tasty meal!

As soon as I saw acai pancakes on the menu I had to get them. I am obsessed with acai berries in all forms so seeing they experimented and did something different was a very exciting moment for me. With my hopes up high I was expecting a little more. The pancakes did not have such a strong acai flavour, rather a very basic pancake mix that was burnt. The berries and cream obviously boosted the flavours and presentation of the dish, but I was not as satisfied with this dish as I had hoped to be.

Overall, I really enjoyed my dining experience here and would definitely come back for that porridge!
Jenilee Bell
Coffee is always on point and the food is exceptional - both taste and presentation. The current rating is certainly not reflective of the quality and service. I rate this one of the best in Melbourne.

The food pics making the rounds on instagram brought us here. We have been lured to cafes the same way before. Then when the food arrives, it isn’t presented and is even more disappointing in taste
Not the case here! Really good coffee! The food took a while to arrive, but hey, it was very busy and not surprised, with the amount of effort that has gone into the presentation
Taste was damn delicious. Smashed Avo was fresh and light, the zucchini flowers with creamy surprise in the centre???? YUM
The açai pancakes taste as good as they look
About now you would be wondering why then didn’t I give it 5 stars?
The açai pancakes didn’t have açai??? Note in my pics? They are white, not purple like in other people’s pics
Did they run out of açai? All good. They should of just told me that though, in case I didn’t want a variation to what was described

I loved this cafe! The owners are so lovely. The coffee, smoothies, presentation and flavour of the food were amazing! I tried the acai pancakes, fried eggs, smashed avo and the special which was roast black figs with goats cheese and ricotta stuffing. I really loved everything.
Eating Away Melbourne
After seeing so many photos on instagram a friend and I decided to try this place. The cafe is not big but have a cozy vibe. I ordered the benedict and it was nice, nothing too special tho, maybe my expectation was too high. Shared a pancake after as well, nice flavour with fresh fruits. A good experience in all.
Followthefoodmelbourne
After seeing so much coverage on instagram my friend and I thought it was about time we tried this place for ourselves! We ordered a couple of their most well known dishes - the acai pancakes and pineapple smoothie bowl.
The pancakes were delicious! Classic taste but the berry flavour was nice and not too sweet. However my favourite part about the dish was the sheer amount and variety of fruit surrounding the pancakes! Banana, grapes, strawberries etc and even fig! Overall it was a really lovely pancake dish that I would gladly have again. My friend had similar positive praise for her smoothie bowl (and I must say it looked amazing presented inside the pineapple half). Service was very friendly and the whole cafe interior was gorgeous.

Cute little cafe on Lennox street serving such beautiful food which also tastes bloody delicious too! Acai pancakes and mushies on toast was 10/10. 👌
Mrs Mark
Came here for mid week breakfast. Loved the decor (lots of hanging greenery and little cactii on the tables). The food was even better - we had the pineapple smoothie bowl and chicken eggs benedict. Both were winners.
Anisha
Soooo amazing!!! I ordered Not Another Smashed Avo and it really stood up to its name. All that tomato on the side was well needed and I got generous amount of avocado. My favourite bit was the zucchini flower, and it was filled with cheese. 10 out of 10 would go again.
Isabelle
I ate the most delicious pineapple smoothie bowl. The presentation was beautiful & it tasted amazing. Would definitely love to go back & try something else on the menu - so many different things i would love to try!
Brendan Hui
Disappointing. Those nice photos you see on its official Instagram, and other popular pages are NOT what they actually provide to you. "Was only for the photo" says the waitress. What about a peasant's photo? The cafe is small and design is not great. Food itself was alright.
Angie
Came for brunch after the Melbourne Marathon and was pleasantly surprised to find it was not too busy! Slightly pricier brunch fare, but the pineapple bowl (served in a real pineapple!) was fresh and filling and the special of day with smoked salmon and grilled asparagus was decadent and delicious. The rich peanut butter banana smoothie was perfect for a refuelling drink. On 2 occasions the front of house brought over additional coffees that were not ours, but otherwise it was smooth sailing hospitality.
Ghazaleh Shokrollahi
Nice and friendly staff, delicious dishes, we had 6 different dishes and were tasteful but the poached eggs were over cooked ! Overall very happy :)
Olivia Xiao
My friend took me there to try their pancakes. And yes it's quite nice. Service was very friendly and quick. The benedict looks very good but taste just alright. Nothing really standout but nothing disappoint either.

Quick stop before flying out of Melbourne. To finish off the day trip, we managed to fit in another cafe. We were after something refreshing, something light, and we got just that. Amazing meals, plate of fruity colourful goodness. The pineapple Super Bowl and açai pancake could not be faulted.
BoganGuts
Lovely cafe down the quiter end of Lennox Street. Stopped in for light lunch and had the seared tuna. The tuna itself was slightly overcooked for my taste, but would probably be spot-on for most and was cut from a high quality fillet. The salad was perfectly fresh, though I didn't get as much fennel or almond as I would have liked and the olives were unnecessary. Good coffee, pleasant ambience and excellent service. Well worth a visit.
Good Food Good Mood
Black Gold burst onto the Instagram scene with their social media worthy gold dusted macarons which looked 💯Four months later I finally managed to hit them up. Conveniently located all of five metres from my hairdresser and also very nearby Richmond station I popped in for breakfast just before my cut and colour. I stepped into a stunning space. Standard Melbourne greenery but interesting brightly coloured cushions and cute little intimate tables with pretty dim lighting. Interiors nailed. It is worth nothing the menu has changed from the Zomato one so I was faced with a fresh decision after already having selected my breakfast in the car en route. I went for the pineapple smoothie bowl with granola. As I have a severe allergy to goji berries I asked whether the granola had them (BECAUSE IT PRACTICALLY ALWAYS DOES). It turned out to be a pre-purchased mix which did in fact include goji so my bowl lost the crunch factor but came beautifully presented in a half pineapple and which was a pleasant surprise. The serving was quite substantial too.
Probably not the best choice on such a cold day but I enjoyed pretending I was on a topical vacay and the flavours were good although it was missing the textural element the granola would have provided so the dish for me ended up being quite one dimensional.
My dining companion however had quite an issue with the side of seasonal greens she got with her scrambled eggs and toast. It looked so burnt it was possibly carcinogenic. I am not sure how they let that out of the kitchen. Is that what they meant by black gold? Anyway my friends a no holds barred type of gal and when they came to collect her barely touched plate she spoke up saying it was 'burnt and tasted awful'. The waitress seemed to take supreme offence to the words 'tasted awful' being used and didn't proffer an apology but said she would see what she could do. When it came time to pay we were told by another waitress the $5 side wasn't right and as such had been removed from the bill which I think was the correct course of action given it was quite inedible. They offered to split the bill too which is always appreciated. A bit more attention to detail required here I think but the menu reads quite deliciously and I wouldn't be opposed to returning to sample some of the other items. Cute little cake cabinet too

This brunch place was smaller than expected, but the quality of their food and coffee makes up for it! We sat at the comfy couches with pillows and I swear I could have spent all day there! The ambience was really nice for chatting and catching up with friends. For drinks, I had an iced coffee/iced latte. Didn't have any ice cream, but I didn't mind as the taste of the Ona Specialty Coffee came through.
For food, I ordered the Mushies on Toast (on Cobb Lane or something, I've forgotten the name) and as a mushroom lover, it was to die for! 😍 It had this mushroom black sauce which was something different! Every bite was just 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻. We also shared the Acia Pancakes and it was also spectacular😍. It had fresh fruits, and the taste if the actual pancake didn't seem too sweet or too heavy. The staff were lovely, and their water glasses were so extra and instagrammable, as well as the interior design.
Thomas Pham
This place is pretty good for what it is, had the open soft shell taco and the wagyu benedict, both averaged priced and enough to be considered a meal that would fill you up for lunch/breakfast
Emily Coupar
Very disappointed with service today. Ordered a dish gluten free & it took nearly 1/2 hour to come out, thankfully I realized the bread was not gluten free & dish had to be remade, my companion had to eat her meal or let it go cold. Barely an apology. The server spoke very little English & could not answer our questions. This would put me off returning, it's just too dangerous. The gluten free bread was average white supermarket style but at least they don't charge extra.

I was pretty excited when I saw spanner crab chilli scramble on the menu but unfortunately it looked better than it tasted. It really needed more flavour. My friend raveeeed about the smashed avo so might have to go back for a second chance.

Dropped in for a takeaway golden latte on almond milk while I was in the neighbourhood and really enjoyed it. While I was waiting I looked around and found the space to be very cute, almost like a hole in the wall but inviting and warm with lots of plush cushions. There's no wonder there were heaps of girls in groups having brunch catch-ups on the couches. Staff were friendly even during my short time there. Will update my review when I get to drop in to try the menu.

Came here with a friend this morning for brunch. Service was a little disorganised at the front of house- the first guy told me that they were full and when I asked how long approximately until a table would become available and he said he didn't know, they were a "full house". The next time I stuck my head in a girl told me that there was another couple waiting for a table and it would be 20-25 minutes before a table was ready. So it was unclear whether there was a list or what the process was to secure a table. The next girl said she had seen me waiting a long time and gave us a table inside straight away. This girl also was our waitress and she was lovely and very attentive. The process was just a bit weird and disorganised for getting a table.
The food was really yummy though - I had the smashed Avo and my friend had the wagyu beef.
Coffee was decent as well.

Great improvement from the predecessor in that space. The mushie, porridge, egg pizza were all really tasty. Great service and nice vibe. Will go back!

Having experienced Black Gold eat 2016 on a cold winters morning, I was transported to a cosy, sophisticated and social coffee shop that was far away from the chill in the air. The service upon arrival was charming and accommodating, for the cafe at the time being full they made sure I was comfortable outside until moving me quickly inside to a communal table, seated with easy going fellow diners. The water and menus were quickly placed in front of me and gave me a chance to find what got my taste buds sacrificed and cured my hunger. The menu is extraordinary, showcasing and heroing ingredients that are often shadowed. I couldn't resist the mushies on toast, but constantly tempted by the accai pancakes and the egg pizza. My decision is was firmly sealed when a fellow diner ecstatically shared the joy of us both ordering the mushrooms, high in anticipation and stomachs roaring. As I looked around, the kitchen just off the side of the dinning area, the atmosphere of this tiny corner cafe is piece of gold in the suburb of Richmond. Young, old, together and alone come here to share the love of food and be filled with joy in every mouthful. My eyes were glittering when my plate arrived, the texture of the mushrooms in many ways that focused on the winter goodies. The toast, Cobb Lane complimented the pan fried mushrooms whilst being tied with the goats cheese from renowned Meredith Dairy. Lost in conversation, my with friend joining me, my plate was easily demolished and fulfilled me to be glowing with satisfaction and delight.

Black Gold Est 2016 is a humble cafe, nestled in trendy Richmond. An shared secret with the local community but a threat to the Melbourne food scene. Well done. I will definitely return!
What a fabulous cosy cafe in Richmond, just off Swan Street. What a menu! All the food looks amazing as it is being taken to fellow diners that it makes it hard to choose. Started with coffee, it is up there with Melbourne's best! They use ONA Raspberry Candy so the high expectations where met! Of course i had to have the insta famous acai pancakes... literally the bees knees! They actually put fresh acai pulp in the mixture. Perfectly balanced, and NOT sickly sweet like most pancakes. The wagyu benedict was next level (shared a bit from my partner) Eggs perfectly poached and wagyu oh so tender. Highly recommended! The staff are also super friendly and very accommodating.

A great new addition to Richmond! Unique offerings that present healthy food in a very tasty way. Everything they source and produce here is only the finest ingredients, can't wait until they open up the space so that more people can fit!

The team here are very approachable and you can tell they take pride in what they do - very impressive. Our favourites were the acai pancakes and the mushroom burger, very tasty and definitely didn't feel tired after which is a very big plus in our books!

Plenty of 2hr parking on nearby streets.

Join us for more adventures on Instagram at @melbfoodbaby!

Absolutely loved the styling of this place. Very inviting with great colour tones. Love the couches and plants. Sevice was good and the menu very creative and well designed. Couldn't go past the acai pancakes. Presentation was spot on only negative was the fact the pancakes tasted a little doughy.

Having taken over from the old Barrio 3121, Black Gold inhibits the same venue, though thankfully offers a much more promising and delicious take on a modern breakfast fair.
With a creative menu that incorporates fresh, wholesome and healthy ingredients, coupled with an owner and head-chef that definitely knows his way around the kitchen, the results are undoubtedly spectacular and impressive.

I visited this new brunch place that is recommended by a friend of my, she always choose restaurant based on Instagram posts. It is rarely for me to actually like a place she chose. With the perfect sunshine, the place look cozy. I ordered the egg pizza and I liked it. Coffee not bad. The staffs are very friendly (they gave us a extra croissant coz we are the last customer of the day, appreciate that). The only thing I would recommend is work on interior design and decor (I would recommend they try to cover up the kitchen area, it's a bit too visible). Overall thanks for the good food and good vibe 👍

Had lunch here couple of weeks ago and i was not disappointed. Had the wagyu rib benedict and it was wonderful. Meat was juicy and tender and the hollandaise sauce was one of the best i ever had. And to top it all of Arj Barker (my favourite comedian) was having lunch right next to me. Will definitely be back.

Loved it! Sunday morning totally relaxing - despite the fact of Mother's Day I got a spot directly - probably I walked in just before the rush though!
Food was delicious and my coffee and later tea was just presented nice and both very nice.
Staff was attentive and my egg pizza was just a delight!
Goes on the "go again" list

Headed here for brunch with friends. Cosy cafe serving breakfast and brunch. I had the pesto polenta with eggs which was so tasty. My husband had the mushroom burger served on a black bun, again very tasty. The egg pizza was also very interesting and was enjoyed by my friend. Don't expect your usual brunch favorites here, things are a little bit different with no bacon in sight. The hot choc was delicious as was the coffee. Prices were reasonable. All in all a nice experience had by all.

New cafe in Richmond! Really different menu - can't get over their gold salted caramel macaroons. Food is all beautifully presented and a nice change from many of the standard dishes we see today. Service is good too!

Just had breakfast this morning. It was SOOOOOO GOOOOD, the smashed avo was such a refreshing change to the boring old avo on toast! i wish i had come here earlier!!! Definitely making it my new local favorite. Also i must add that their coffee has to be one of the best in Melbs... Yes a big call but there it is. Do yourself a favour and check it out. The staff were also very attentive.

What an amazing find. After drooling over their insta posts i had to venture down to sample for myself! From the moment we arrived service was on point. We were seated bought water and asked for our coffee order. The 4 of us ordered the superfood Muesli, wagyu benedict, acai pancaked YES AS AMAZING AS IT SOUNDS & our simple friend the scrambled eggs. Food has one word FLAVOUR!!!!! Full off it, delicious and INSTA WORTHY, too pretty too eat! Props to the chef. Delicious coffee, being a self confessed coffee snob (will drive an hour to get good coffee) this did not dissapoint and is one for the list. Coffee is by Ona Coffee, Raspberry Candy blend. Definately one for the hit list. I will return for the egg pizza and egg martini. Cant believe they only opened a week ago.

Tiny cafe with an innovative and appealing menu. I ordered the wagyu benedict with apple cider hollandaise, poached eggs, horseradish and celeriac on multigrain sourdough. A fantastic version of a classic. The wagyu was lovely and tender and I really enjoyed the addition of the celeriac. The sourdough was some of the best I've had too- even the crust was nice and soft as opposed to super crunchy. I also ordered a golden latte with coconut milk. Not exactly spectacular but still pleasant.

Food was great, I had the Wagyu Benedict and my wife had the acai pancakes. Coffee was ok.

Minor drawbacks - no decaf coffee and the tables were set up for either a very tight 2 or 6 (although there are additional tables in a closed off section)
