Etc. Feel free to throw in their Salted egg fried chicken ribs and bean sprots leave in garlic, snow peas with fish fillets..all so good. If you want to i press your Parents i law or a friend from oversea, do come here. Thats what we did, and we all left smiling.

Decor and ambience although lacking is nostalgic of many 1980’s hole in a wall Chinese restaurants. Again, I cannot stress enough that we are here for food.

I am abit of a regular here. For special occasions like to come in for the honey prawns. The prawns are succulent, battered and fried quite nicely. The seafood clay pot has your classic oyster sauce flavour with a good combination of seafood and vegetables.

Solid option for Chinese Cantonese cuisine with various meats cooked 100 different ways.
My go-tos:
* snow pea shoots cooked with garlic sauce - only when in season. The shoots are nice alternative to typical veggies like cabbage.
* salt & pepper chicken ribs - also good with salted egg yolk. There's a thin bone in the middle, but they're batter is crispy and delicious.
* Roast meats - can't go wrong with a roast duck or crispy roast pork.
Service is no-frills come as you are, which is fine for this kind of eatery.
Been coming here for a long time now and the food is still as good as ever! The must orders for us is the salted egg yolk chicken ribs and sweet and sour pork! We also love the xo clams and the crab noodles! We recently tried the spring onion and ginger egg noodles with prawns and they were delicious too!

We’ve been here a few times and their service is always friendly, efficient and quick. Food comes out quickly and is always delicious. We love their fried rice as it is not dry like other restaurants. This place is always busy with a great atmosphere.
This place is awesome. Always super busy due to its authentic cuisine in the heart of Springvale. The food here is great - especially the seafood dishes. The standout of my meal was a fresh ocean trout cooked in ginger and shallots! Service can be a bit lacking due to the busy-ness, but the food is fantastic and reasonably priced.
I noticed as me and my partner were seated, the waitress was thoughtful in that she went to get an English menu for my partner. Service overall was good, it was never like you couldn't get someone's attention.
We opted for two sharing dishes with steamed rice - 1. king prawns with chinese muchroom and veggie and 2. Steamed whole founder with ginger and spring onion. We were able to finish all the food but felt very full. These two dishes will not suit those preferring very flavoursome food as it's was more plain but focus on natural flavours, very much the goodness of Cantonese cuisine.

Not cheap at $80 for a crab, but it was 2.5kg and we had leftovers for the next day. The meat itself was really fresh and sweet. Great quality for such a no- frills restaurant in Springvale. I'm sure we'd be paying double that anywhere else.
We also ordered the stir fried tofu and veggies which was very well- cooked; the snow peas still had a great crunch and everything was nice and green.
Can't wait to go back for those salted egg chicken ribs!

Walrus is one of the better places for traditional Cantonese food in the Springvale area. You will most likely be able to walk in during lunch hours and get a table however during dinner hours on weekends, the place fills up quickly. Their lunch menu is reasonably priced however their dinner menu is perhaps more expensive in comparison to its competitors in the area. My recommendations from the dinner menu is the beancurd/tofu stuff with prawns which they have never gotten wrong (with me). They are consistent with their dishes and have had the same menu for many years. The environment is very unconsidered and casual however customers come for the food. Service is decent, not overly friendly yet get the orders done and it's a decent place for bigger groups.
We entered this place for dinner on a busy Sunday evening. We were started off with herbal soup before we ordered. We ordered xo steamed oysters, crocodile meat with ginger, salted egg yolk soft shell crab, and seafood hot pot. The oysters were decently sized with good flavour. The crocodile meat was surprisingly tender without any hint of odor. The soft shell crab had a crunchy coating and generous servings of salted egg yolk. I felt the seafood hotpot was under seasoned. Just as a side note, the salted egg was off the menu so there is a small surcharge.

We often come here for family dinners and celebrations. It's one of our favourite places to eat.
This time around, we came to have a family dinner for Chinese New Year and we ordered two mud crabs with noodles: one with spring onion and ginger and the other with XO sauce.
We also ordered some abalone in the shell and oysters - we opted for ginger, XO, and garlic to go with these.
Now, I am not a huge fan of ginger (in fact, it makes me gag) so I only ate the non-ginger versions of each dish and they were amazing. Of particular note, the garlic oysters were top notch and I would eat a thousand of those and I'm not usually one to go out of my way for oysters!
The mud crab was delicious, as per usual, and the sauce was great and plentiful through the noodles. I often find some restaurants are quite stingy with their sauce in crab noodle dishes, but this was not!
We also ordered the sweet and sour pork, which is a staple for us and we always have, as well as a beef and Chinese broccoli stir fry. Also, pretty good. However, the seafood definitely steals the show. If you ever visit Walrus - you need to order seafood dishes. It's a bit pricey but the quality of the food is well worth it.
The negative things about this place is that when it's busy, like it was for us tonight, it's very difficult to get any service. We had a booking for 7.30pm and were seated but no one came to take our order until 8pm and this was with us flagging down staff as they walked past until one actually stopped to take our order - the others just nodded to acknowledge us, but didn't come back due to being so busy with other tables.
It is also very cramped, although the space is quite large, they fill it to the brim. It was very hard for us to get a pram in and out! Felt a little bad that we had to interrupt and ask people to stand up to create space for us to get through. Overall, the atmosphere is pretty good. It can get quite loud, though, because it's a lot of people in the one place and everyone is talking over everyone else so people tend to speak louder to get heard.
The good things are that you get complimentary lotus and chicken soup entrée and for dessert they provide a sweet red bean soup and fresh fruit. Also, EFTPOS! It's a rare occurrence for restaurants in Springvale - most places only accept cash. I think they might have a 10% surcharge for card, though.
Roast pork was great, as was the duck. Loved the freshness of the soft shell crab. King prawns in salty egg yolk were the biggest hit of the night. Will definitely be back!
Ratio Decidendi: Walrus is a family favourite. Despite the number of times we’ve been here, the order is always the same. Salt & pepper chicken ribs is always a given – they will be some of the best you will try in Melbourne. Satisfyingly crunchy batter that’s perfectly seasoned hasn’t come at the expense of overcooking the protein within.
This is definitely a highly recommended place for authentic asian cuisine that’s packed with flavour at decent prices and generous portions. My go to place for crab noodles. Other favourites are the spicy salt pork ribs, the chicken ribs in salty egg yolk, the clams in XO sauce, roast duck, pork spare ribs with Peking sauce, abalone and mushroom and T-bone steak in black pepper sauce. Always always packed, so booking is a must. Decor isn’t anything fancy or special but that’s irrelevant as most aren’t there for the atmosphere but for the great food. Floor staff are always attentive and quick to respond, especially appreciated despite it being always so busy and full of action.
On appearance, it doesn't look anything special but boy is the food amazing! This is my go to place crab; mind you I'm a creature of habit so when I'm here only order the same thing. Crab with ginger and shallots with 2 x noodles, water spinach with garlic and salt and pepper battered Japanese tofu. Their menu is endless but those are my definite recommendations. So much flavour and so delish! Just be mind of crab price when not in season, it can be super exxy! But worth it if you are feeling decadent!
Ambience is what you would expect from a Chinese restaurant. Service is really good and good is alway fresh and plentiful. The standouts are the fresh barramundi and chicken in duck egg.

For some silly reason, I've always chosen to eat somewhere else when in Springvale. Walrus turns out to be a very good Cantonese BBQ restaurant.
We got the complimentary soup. Very traditional pork bone broth with lotus root and dried octopus.
The serve of Congee was so large we had to take some home.
Service was nice and friendly too. It was a little step up from what you normally get. Definately will make a return visit. Great value too.

Definitely one of the better Asian restaurants local to springvale. A good spot for families to eat as their dishes range is amazing. Always something new to try. The garlic chicken spareribs is a must try.

Great place to come with a large group so you can have a bit of everything and better on the pocket. This is a typical place for lots of families to have dinner. Also typical down to the tacky menu items on the wall, complimentary starter soup and dessert (oranges or red bean dessert).
Our group usually come here for their ginger & shallots crab noodle, silken Japanese tofu, spicy salt chicken ribs (or salted egg version), roast duck and chinese brocolli with oyster sauce. And lots and lots of that chilli oil! We are pretty stuffed afterwards. P.S. Skip the dessert, go down the road to Cultural Commons or Dessert Story if you still want a sweet treat.

Reserved on Saturday night and still had to wait around 20 mins ,however the food was really good,Blackbean beef was extremely good and will go back for more. The serves of bbq porkbelly were a little on the small side same as salt pepper Calamari however quality was there so not overly fussed.A little confusing was the steamed rice as past reviews suggested they serve you but we helped ourself from rice bucket next to table ,they were busy though !! Overall Chinese in my area doesnt come close to this place (worth a visit!!)
Late Saturday night dinner for 4. Looks like we missed the rush. Complimentary soup to start whilst we pondered over the menu. Decided on crab with ginger & spring onion, sweet & sour pork, and snow pea shoots with dried scallops. All 3 dishes were delicious. Generous portions. We asked for 3 boxes to pack the leftovers from each dish. Complimentary red bean soup dessert, typical of Chinese restaurants. Staff were attentive. This place is one of the best restaurant for crabs in Melbourne!!! We've been going there for many years now and will continue to do so.

Although it's rather pricey considering the other restaurants in the area, Walrus serves up great dishes including a fantastic crab noodle dish. They also (like another reviewer has said) have excellent chilli oil.
We always go there for some authetic cantanese dishes, steamed fish always made to perfection. Complemetry before and aftermeal soup is always a bonus !
I come here every time for their tamarind crab and OMG it is so yummy ! My friends and I often go here for the crab and we usually don't talk because we're too into eating the crab. I wouldn't say this is the cheapest Asian restaurant to eat at but the food is good overall. You get complimentary house soup at the beginning and they usually ask you if you want complimentary dessert.
I enjoy going to Walrus for a meal of Chinese food. Unlike many other Chinese restaurants I've been to, I didn't feel like a poor peasant because I didn't order the $500 banquet or the $300 worth of crab. With the influx of many wealthy diners, a lot of Chinese restaurants are out for money by offering live seafood and expensive banquets as obviously they are the most profitable. I always get the feeling that they would much prefer high spending diners than ordinary people like me who don't particularly want to blow hundreds of dollars on a Chinese dinner. At Walrus there is no such pressure. Order what you want, and the service and attitude is the same. I would suggest anything fried is good here. The fried prawns with the salty egg yolk is in a class of its own. The chicken ribs and flounder are also very memorable. Would definitely return.
Good service. Prolly this is my first experience dining in a chinese restaurant which serves free clear soup and free black sticky rice dessert. We had roast pork and deep fried calamary.
Recommended for a chinese restaurant, well service even though for student its a bit expensive but its worth it. I love the bbq pork and crispy pork here as well the calamari (I think need more seasoning for salt and pepper calamari). Start with complimentary soup its good for cold weather like today, they pour the soup and serve the rice to customer where usually in other chinese restaurant we serve our own rice. At the end they also give complimentary dessert its a hot dessert I don't know the name maybe like traditional dessert in china. Overall I love the service and food here. I probably recommend this to my friends and colleagues
Possibly the only Chinese restaurant that has the best chilli oil. Majority of the times I've been there is the presence of the wok-breath in the dishes I've ordered so it's a tick in consistency of the cooking. Serving sizes are also pretty generous considering most places are now downsizing. My only gripe is some dishes, i.e. Hokkien Fried Rice has jumped up in price.

Close your eyes when you walk in. This is your classic dirty Chinese restaurant; white linen tables, walls were painted in 1980's and you get your little triangle orange serviette. Having said that, the crab is fab. Ginger and spring onion or the deep fried chilli will make sitting in unpleasant surroundings, incredibly pleasant. Other dishes are bit of a hit and miss, occasionally face-squirmingly too salty, but otherwise I quite enjoyed this place.
I like it!. I really like this place and have been back a few times. Recommended it to family and they have enjoyed their meals there too. The food is yummy and service is good. Food is a little overpriced and decor a bit old but we still keep going back cos of the food.

Tastes like fish. Crocodile meat is crispy & tastes like fish except a bit stringy. Quite nice, though a bit pricey.
Consistent Quality. The restaurant has been established so many years ago and I've been a frequent customer for many years. They've gone from the smallest size to the current size which I believe was triple what they had.
Food from Walrus that you must try are their 'deep fried' spicy salt stuff. They definitely master the Chinese cooking quite well with more traditional take rather than 'westernized' Chinese food that some Chinese restaurant may offer. The lunch specials are also great value. You get soup and very decent size meal fit for a king! You get more classic offerings like the BBQ meats and the rice/noodle dishes.
The specials I can recommend is their seafood, they do really well in that department because of their 'fresh' stock in the aquariums. Do try the steamed oysters or fish. Whilst the service isnt going to be comparable to the high end up scale restaurant, for the price you pay you get great food with very efficient service.

Lunch before 1pm is great for prices and you get decent size portion. Dinner menu is WAY too expensive. I just don't understand why if you order for example the crispy fried chicken you need a huge plate of just chicken then have to order rice separately and pay 4 times what you get for lunch and lunch is a meal on a plate. 0_o

Fantastic crab noodles. There is one place in Melbourne where I always return to for good crab. Out of the many places I've been, Walrus is definitely worth the drive down!
Highly recommend the XO crab but for those who are less adventurous, just go for the ginger shallot style.
We've also tried other dishes such as the salted egg yoke chicken, lamb hotpot, tofu with salted fish - all were good as well but the crab is their speciality in my humble opinion!
Delicious & Good quality. I've been coming here for all my life this place is fantastic a wider variety of food and the staff are well uniformed for a great service. The owners are fabulous and friendly love eating the fried pigeon and fried chicken with salt and pepper absolute spot on! Along with the fresh abalone and barramundi fish can't complain. Must go to restaurant if you are in the area! Keep it Walrus :)
Consistent ~ all the time!. This is one of the best places to eat in Springvale. Both the lunch and dinner menu are fantastic. My favourite from the lunch menu is the seafood combination crispy fried egg noodles..yum! I would also recommend the spicy chicken spare ribs..it is not that spicy for those can't handle hot food, you can always ask for the chilli to be put separately. The service is super fast and you are always welcomed with a complimentary chinese broth.
Prices have just recently increased bit still worth it. They are currently expanding the restaurant.
Super quick take away. Ordered 13 dishes for just on $100 and was ready in 10 mins. All dishes were really good except for one. Definitely a hit!

Quality is variable. While we usually enjoy eating in this restaurant, there was one time when the food just dis not taste as good as usual. It might just be a bad day for the chef or something but it was quite noticable. For dinner the place is quite busy so you may have to wait to get a table.
Lobster with noodles is always the best here! Even though it may cost $100+ it's always a treat to have it here.

Good for dinner. I always have dinner there when there's nothing to eat at home. Its so close to home too; located in the heart of Springvale. It may be the best Chinese restaurant in that area.
First up: Complimentary soup that is made with pork spare ribs and sometimes they add in lotus, carrots and dried seaweed.

You don't know whether it's good unless you try it. The skin was so crispy and did not have any distinctive 'pork' smells.
Stir-fried Chinese broccoli is my favorite but it'd be better if they added white cooking wine to it to bring out the flavors of the garlic.
My other favorite is the fried chicken spare ribs. So fattening and oily and yet, so good.
Service is fast-paced but then again, you get some of the waiters that do not smile at all and just serve you.

This nondescript restaurant serves no frills delicious Canto style food. Service is on point, popular place so best to book or arrive early. Soup and dessert were complementary. Prices may seem high for the area but... the food! Both street and paid parking available in the vicinity
It was one of those late evening late minute dash for food for us and since we were near Springvale, we decide to give this restaurant a go. Pleasantly surprised with their service. Started off well with a warm comforting complementary soup (see photo) while the chef prepared our 2dishes. For a party of 3, we ordered the spicy chicken ribs and a mixed vegetable with tofu. (See photos). Both are promptly served right after we finished our soup. At the end of a filling dinner, we were treated with a red bean dessert. Will go back again with a larger group and try more dishes!

had a great dinner here with some foodie friends. pick of the night was the Kang Kong in fermented beancurd sauce which I really loved, and the salt and pepper eel which was made with live eel (they have tanks, and seafood is always best fresh). XO pippies were also outstanding as was the accompanying dough fritter youtiao. roast meat selection was good, although the pipa duck here isn't as good as Chopsticks Delight (that IMO is the best in Melbourne). deep fried stuffed intestines was yummy!
