4.0 Very Good

Located in the Thai square of Springvale, I heard from a friend that Sabb Der does some of the best boat noodles in Melbourne. This being one of my favourite Thai dishes I had to try!

I got their pork noodle soup with rice noodles in jumbo size. Finally a place that serves up boat noodles that actually fills me up! It had all kinds of porky bits, pork meat, pork balls, pork liver and pork crackling. The soup was sweet, strong and intensely addictive. I’d enhance it by adding a bit of dry chilli for some heat, there are other condiments also but I find it good as is.

Friends all enjoyed their respective dishes and drinks. They also had a stall down at Springvale Lunar New Year Festival celebrations serving up popular Thai dishes such as pad Thai.

Whenever I crave boat noodles this is the place to go. My usual order is the pork noodle soup which comes with sliced pork, springy pork balls and sliced pork liver. The soup is rich and savoury and spicy (as in spices, not heat) and I love adding extra crushed dried chilli and plenty of pickled chilli! The morning glory gives the dish a nice crunch too. Order a Thai iced milk tea and you've for a great meal!

The pad see ew here is very good as well, very tasty with a nice charred wok flavour.

Great place for proper Thai in Springvale.

We ordered the fish cakes and chicken pad see ew for dinner. The fish cakes came out very quickly and was steaming hot, delicious and the sweet chilli sauce that came with it was not lacking in quantity. The chicken pad see ew was very saucy and packed with flavour, however, one of our plates had chilli (we didn't even mention anything about chilli nor did the menu say chilli) so that was a bit confusing and unfortunate since we couldn't handle the chilli and had to have it as a takeaway instead. There's a bit of a language barrier with the waitress, but overall, the food is worth it.

When you're in Springvale but you don't feel like Vietnamese food, Sabb Der Thai is the perfect place to satisfy your cravings for Thai food. Every time I come here to eat, I never fail to order their boat noodles, the broth is packed full of flavour and there's a generous serving of ingredients. I must say, boat noodles is one of my favourite bowl of noodles and the one at Sabb Der Thai has never disappointed. The other must order dish for me is their soft pork rib soup and any of their papaya salads.

This is a nice little Thai restaurant tucked away of to the edge of the Springvale shopping/restaurant zone - in a block that focuses has other Thai, Cambodian and Laos eateries (rather than the usual Vietnamese offerings across rest of Springvale shops).

The flavours of the food were very authentic tasting - just like I remember in Thailand - which is something most of the other westernized Thai 'lets just add sugar to everything' restaurants across Melbourne struggle with.   We were the only westerners eating there too - rest of patrons all Thai (which is a good sign of course).

Highlight - finally found a great Todd Kratiem Phrik Thai ('fried with garlic + pepper') which tasted like it did in Thailand - so very impressed with that.  Pity they didn't do it with fried calamari (our favorite)- only Pork, Chicken or Beef on offer.

Downside however is I think they aren't using the best core ingredients (beef, etc) - so food could have probably been a lot nicer - although it is very cheap there (so good value). I think I'd happily pay a lot more and get some better quality ingredients to go with their recipes..

Second time I've eaten there and it was as good or better than the first. While it's not exactly in the middle of the Springvale market place it's worth walking to the edge for the experience. On a cold day the hot noodle soups really hit the spot. I suspect they make the 'balls' in house because I wished there were more. The broth was flavourful without being washed out but still subtle enough that it was enjoyable. We were asked if we wanted the salad to be normal or spicy and I'm happy to report it was spicy when that was requested! That's always good. So very enjoyable and laid back for a casual eat in the area.

This is a great Thai place.  I'm both relieved and devastated that it's so far from where I live.  If we're talking about boat noodles (noodle soup), this place is on par with soi38 but for the different toppings on the noodle, the soup is not as sweet as Me Dee's.

Great Pad Thai, not too sweet.  They also do Shrimp Paste Fried Rice (Kao Kluk Gapi ข้าวคลุกกะปิ), which was quite well done (authentic version of Chin Chin's Gapi Fried Rice--Chin Chin's version is better but not by much).

There's so many they have on the menu that are not standard fare at your usual Thai place, I'm going to find more excuses to visit Springvale now!

24/09 Tried Fermented Pork Fried Rice (Khao Pad Naem/ข้าวผัดแหนม) for the first time ever today.  A bit too greasy for my liking, but naem is quite interesting.  I can't detect any sour flavour with the naem in my fried rice, the texture is a lot like cotechino with the rough ground meat texture, hint of gelatin with slightly sweet and savoury flavour.

This corner shoplot seems to be constantly changing hands/names every few years. If I recall correctly, the last two places have been Thai as well. The interior looked inviting and the menu was well set out which made it a bit easier to deviate from my usual Thai haunt, Kao Gaeng across the driveway.

I decided to try something old and something new. Old being my all time favourite Thai dish of boat noodles with pork. New being and interesting dish which I spotted on the menu described as a "Thai fish curry with chicken feet"! The unusual combination certainly piqued my interest.

I was very impressed with the boat noodles. The broth was rich and had more of a herbal aroma compared to the one from Kao Gaeng. The temperature of the soup was also sufficiently hot enough, just the way I like it. The meat including pork balls, pork slices and pork liver were all cooked perfectly. A worthy competitor to my long time favourite noodles from across the road.

The "Signature Dish of Thailand" - Kanom Jeen Namya Pa also lived up to its expectations. Sure enough, it was a fish based curry sauce with chicken feet in it. Served with a side of salad and pickled mustard green. This was all layered on top of some silky smooth vermicelli noodles. The flavours were interesting and although the combination of fish curry and chicken feet might not to be everybody's tastes, I certainly enjoyed it. A good dish for the chilli lovers too, as it does pack quite the chilli hit. (Those who guzzle down scorpion or ghost pepper sauces need not apply. If you like that level of insanity, I suggest the lava noodles in Sydney's Do Dee) . The only criticism I have for this dish is that the chicken feet were too overcooked and soft. I would have preferred something with more structure.

Oveall I had a great meal at Sabb Der. The staff are friendly, the setting is modern and clean and the menu certainly tempts you to go back and try other things.

Excited to find some authentic Thai food. This is the best chicken laab that i have had outside of Laos. So far superior to the crap most thai restaurants serve. Generous chilli and no watered down coconut flavours. Popular with local Thai community from what i could see.
