Very enjoyable experience. My husband and self both had delicious dishes. I had a tasty South African curry, served in a crusted bread. My husband a succulent slow cooked lamb. We finished with a coconut doughnut and a very good coffee (we are both very fussy coffee drinkers). Being a small casual cafe/restaurant, the staff were particularly friendly and accommodating. Well done Ostrich & Egg..we will return.
This is an amazing place you can try out and have amazing food items from here , i tried this place when i visited Melbourne for the 2nd time 💕
If the ostrich and the egg koeksisters are anything to go by then they deserve a 5/5. Super friendly South African run restaurant that serve up delicious South African treats. We’re so excited they have a restaurant now... can’t wait to visit for a full lunch or dinner experience. I’ve heard they make a delicious bunny chow. Mmm getting hungry now. We’ll report back soon.
Great South African food served in a cool funky space. Best milktart outside of South Africa. Will definitely be back to work my way through the entire menu
The food here was beautiful, generously served and priced well. The service was fantastic and the decor of the cafe felt authentic. Highly recommend this place as there are not many South African restaurants in Melbourne!
Very excited to see this permanent shop after being a frequent customer of the Ostrich & The Egg food truck! The koeksisters are a type of doughnut and these guys know how to nail the recipe!! The traditional coconut topping is my favourite, not too sweet. Have also tried the mocha crumble and it's fantastic but I wish it were a stronger coffee flavour.
Absolutely delicious and authentic SA delights. Run by a delightful mother/son team.
Bright colors and bright smiles, they are passionate about keeping it true to their heritage.
Can’t fault the place!
A newly opened Cafe on Inkerman Street of St Milda happened to us by-chance. What got us tempted to visit this place was the fact that it specialises in. South African cuisine. This tiny and compact little cafe is beautifully done-up, and has utilised tiny space to have as many table as possible, efortlessly.
Don't let the menu disappoint you as it mainly consists of finger food and small bites. They do have one or two mains to share, but, isn't it more fun to try so many beauties from the menu than eating just one mains.
Ordered a Bunny Chow, Pan Seared Fish, Milk Tart nd Hot Chocolate.
Pan seared Fish which is left to pickle for 72 hours with a sweet and sour dressing and is served with apple slaw with peach and mustard vinaigrette gets our vote for the Dish Of The Day. Perfectly moist, nicely seared and pickles, served cold had us drooling until the last remains on the plate. Guilty as Charged of trying to lick the plate off 😆😆😆
South African Milk Tart were #Bang On and second best. Clearly the Dessert Of The Day, Milk tart was light, perfectly sweet and the crust was perfectly crunch and holding together....
We loved the Hot Chocolate as well...Perfect for the weather!!
BunnyChow from was way different from the actual one had in lSouth Africa and lacked robust flavors, nevertheless, it was yum!! It was served with a tiny bowl of curry in case the bread soaked up all of it. The attendant was quite sweet of giving us some chopped chillies realizing that we are from the breeds of foodies who love some cuisines / dishes Hot. Some variation to the dish, and they would definitely have a winner, in our honest opinion.
Vegans wouldn't have too many options but vegetarians do.
Service could be a bit slow bit quite friendly and warm.
Great South African restaurant. Very authentic. Service a little slow. However food was super delicious. We shared some traditional sweets. Will he back to try more for sure!
Honest & yummy family cooking, the Cape Malay koeksisters are delicious, love the one with coconut.
Some tasty SA wines, the Pinotage was delicious.
Service is warm and friendly.
