I'm guessing that this store is the original Bourke St Bakery and it was a cut above the other branches that I've been to. The croissant was much better - only somewhat flaky and buttery but good for the price - and the coffee was heavy and syrupy but still creamy. Still serving the mid market rather than being a fancy bakery but doing it very well.
I tried the combination of chocolate milk, pork sausage roll and ginger tart. They are so good!!! No wonder it is rated so high!
This bakery truly deserves high rate! We had their signature sausage roll, ginger tart, custard tart, ricotta cheese cake. Really good!
Found this gem since 2010, a decade later this is pace only going stronger and still as delicious. My favourite is the ginger brûlée tart which has a slight hint of ginger and perfect for afternoon tea with coffee.

🥧Passionfruit Meringue ($5.5)
🍪Dark Chocolate and sour cherry cookie ($4)
A small corner bakery, very charming and humble. Some outdoor seating but the baked goods are also good to takeaway for a snack.
Both of the treats were very nice for afternoon tea. The Dark chocolate cookie was so rich and I've never had a cookie with cherry🍒 before! I always love having meringue and the passionfruit was a perfect contrast with the sweetness. We also got a small loaf of sourdough which tasted nice with dinner 🥰
Such an impressive ginger brûlée tart! I would definitely recommend this little cafe shop to anyone looking for vintage vibe with good desserts 😉
Saw some mixed reviews about their signature ginger brulee tart, and decided to see for myself. So glad I did. The ginger taste was subtle but pronounced enough to know that it was used. Kind of a beautiful collaboration between gingerbread and a custard tart. Absolutely enjoyed it.
Famous for a reason! Great coffee, sweets and savoury pastries. Seating is on the sidewalk so it can feel a bit tight but it's better since the construction on Devonshire has lighten up.
Best place for pies and coffee. The place is all the time crowded and their service is good too. The staff are polite and friendly. They have bacon pie , chicken pie and a variety of cakes.
This is an old bakery but their breads and cakes are very delicious. Their store is small, but you can order takeaway or just sit/stand outside. The Ginger Brulee Tarts are phenomenal and is unique in it's own charm.
Visited two mornings in a row. This is how much I liked it. Tried their tap filter lineup, piccolo, long black. I’ll have to say, the coffee is a tiny bit on the disappointed side given how high of an expectation I’ve had. Food wise, delicious! Chicken toasties, and the corn fritter, simply lovely.
Finally get a chance to get here after only having Single O coffees from other wholesaler. Staffs are amazing! Super friendly, Bubbly and Knowledgeable. Daily Fright is the must-have here! Very reasonable price Specialty Coffees. Would love to try their food next time.
Went there in the morning, coffee was good, food was good. Would wanna go back again. They have a bunch of beans that they roast by themselves I believe. The time I went there were only outdoor seats as they didn’t open up the shop - but that might have changed now. Anyway, keen to come back here again soon.
Some of the most delicious coffees, the Single O beans got me on a journey of brewing at home.
I finally got up to the Surry Hills Cafe and it was a treat, the filter flight was amazing as was the pork toastie.
Staff were super attentive and friendly
I also picked up a packet of the Parachute brews which are super useful for getting really amazing coffee when all you have near is a kettle
Came here for coffee twice while visiting Sydney. Lovely staff, even better coffee and overall a really nice experience. I also really enjoyed the little Easter egg in the doorbell - put a big smile on my face! 😁
The milk bun with bacon and egg was incredible. The bun was so light it was really just a vector for ingesting yummy bacon and egg and the mayo had a nice heat and just added to the whole experience. Coffee was delicious. I love the way they used the wall opposite in the alleyway for street art and then repeated the motif on the pillar inside the bar area.
Visiting Single O in Sydney 🇦🇺 was an amazing experience when it comes to pure black single origin coffee.
It doesn’t take long to realize that Australia is a espresso based milk beverage country. According to the Square Coffee Report 2019, 74% of all coffees served in a café were milk beverages (latte: 27%, flat white: 25%, cappuccino: 20%, and piccolo: 2%). That is massive compared to other countries. This is also why the baristas here in Australia are milk texturing robots.
Single O launched an interesting black coffee model to emphasizing on the purest way to enjoy coffee – single origin black coffee: TAP-IN: “We launched black coffee on tap at our Surry Hills café in early 2019. The Freepour™ Taps were created to shake things up at the coffee bar, in the name of single origins. (Which we’ve had a thing for since 2003.) We set about to give pure black filter coffee as much precedence as the espresso machine. The result was a self-pay self-serve, coffee on tap system, front & center, at your fingertips.”
I enjoyed a tasty single origin coffee from Costa Rica – Finca La Manita. While sipping this coffee chilled on ice, I enjoyed reading about their farm trip to Fina La Manita in 2013. It is always great to see when roaster engage in long-term relationships with farmers.
I also liked the colorful chairs to sit outside against the nicely spray-painted wall. And one little extra: they made sure, that I won’t run away with the toilet key. Too big to run! And one more thing: it is also nice to see, that many cafés are using recycled toilet paper. The details make the difference.
A big thank you also to the baristas for their great hospitality and the time to explain the TAP-IN system, that was cool. THANK YOU.
