Celebrated a special milestone here with the "sora" tasting menu. Loved the cosy but classy interiors mixed in with a casual crowd. Food was delicious with my highlights being the kangaroo tartare, fresh sushi and sashimi, grilled salmon. Even though the food was of great quality, it still leaned to the more expensive side for this experience
Super excited to try this place! The salmon tartare was one of my faves. I love salmon and I love crisps too so this worked well for me. Spicy seared cucumber and avocado just melts in your mouth. Vegetable tempura was great, the batter wasn’t too thick, paired it with the dipping sauce and it was perfect. Me and my partner love Gyoza, we always have to have it with ramen haha. The gyoza here had a crispy base and the meat was juicy! The scotch fillet steak with wafu sauce and garlic chips tastes as yummy as it sounds. Would come back :)
What a lovely experience we had here. Very friendly and attentive staff. The food is fresh, delicate and refreshing. The oysters, sashimi and sushi were all super fresh and delicious.
Actual rating: 3.5/5
We got the “sora” set menu for 2.
Highlights were:
-oysters (probably the best oysters I’ve had in Sydney)
-sashimi (you cant go wrong with sashimi)
-palate cleanser sorbet (very fresh sweet flavour)
I found the steak to be average and the zucchini overwhelming. The dessert was interesting.
We left the place feeling very very full
Also, to note: water costs $11
Food tasted great flavour wise, but everything was extremely salty. We ordered mostly protein dishes and everything was cooked beautifully. The wagyu gyoza was a standout.
Only complaint is that despite having a booking, we were seated next to the entry on very low stools with very low tables squashed next to other diners. The strange layout meant we weren’t even facing each other and were instead facing other diners. It was an extremely awkward seating arrangement and would have to bend over everytime to reach our plates. so we asked to move to the bar which was a tad more comfortable.
The king fish was delicious! The bay bug which is a highly recommended dish was so fresh and sweet!
I went to Toko on a fri night with a ‘new friend’ , we were so well served by a guy we called ‘Lachlan’ but I think his real name was Charlie . He was so helpful and attentive and made super strong tasty drinks for us . My friend even saw her Pilates instructor there having a very good time
I had my birthday dinner there on a Friday night. Booked a table for 6 at 8pm
But when we arrived there, the table was not ready so we waited a little bit until the people finished their drinks. This was the only negative thing.
The sashimi, the prawn tempura, the lamb cutlet, and the wagyu beef were all killing us. How come they know how to make this mouthwatering food. Like you’re in heaven! I was a bit nervous in the beginning when I saw everybody’s face after they saw the price. But I saw their face after they tried the food, I knew it was worthy of picking this venue!
I was craving a simple but delicious Japanese meal and there couldn’t have been a better place for this than Toko! Started off with the staple edamame, and I was a slave to that godly spicy sauce around it! The kingfish was fresh and light, the seared waygu beef was melt in the mouth, the pork belly was tender and succulent, the robata grilled prawn was soft and juicy and that chopped scallop nigiri drove me crazy! Of course the best part of the meal was the rhubarb and macadamia crumble with the apple sorbet! I am a fan!!
Amazing food! This is definitely the best Japanese restaurant I've been to so far. Loved everything of it. The atmosphere, the food... I felt a bit pity that we didn't go for the set menu option as I believe we could try more varieties that way. The sushi was wonderful! I'm not really a big fan of sushi, I used to think sushi was all the same and lack of techniques, but was impressed by the taste and freshness of their sushi. Sashimi was also very fresh, and I'd definitely recommend their salmon tartare, trust me you don't want to miss it! I would love to go back again for occasions :)
What an amazing experience! Went here to catch up with a mate I hadn't seen in a while a d this was the perfect place. We sat up at the bar and got to see all the plates come out. Everything that was served has excellent presentation. The staff were very friendly and helpful even though it was a busy night. All the cocktails were great. We had the tasting plate for $95 per head and got soft shell crabs as well. The pace that everything came out in was perfect and the size of the servings were just right for a tasting option. We were just the right amount of full. Looking forward to coming back again.
Toko - A modern experience of Japanese Izakaya.
We tried the tasting menu and sashimi omakase.
we didn't get a reservation, instead tried walking in and we got an outdoor space.
Atmosphere- it's on point and honestly a pretty large space to accommodate a good amount of people.
Service - very good and friendly services with adequate understanding over the extensive menus.
Food - Their Oyster Yuzu is amazing! Have to try. sashimi are fresh and the deserts are freshingly new.
Drinks- we were recommended two sweet sake and it was amazing. a yuzu sake and sweet umeshu.
price- in my opinion it's pricey for a modern izakaya but justified by everything else that i mentioned.
Great service. Gets busy fast but food came out very quickly so we didn’t have to wait. I highly recommend the beef tataki, scampi nigiri, kingfish, sashimi omakase, lamb cutlets and yuzu cheesecake. Miso cod was expensive and not as great as Sokyo. Pork belly skewer was not very nice either, it wasn’t crispy and tender as I expected from yakitori places. Nigiri was okay but not as tasty as the sashimi. Lychee martini was tasty.
Dinner here with group of four.
Our sitting was on a Friday night at around 8:30.
We ordered the tasting menu with the additional Wagu steak course which came to around $150 per person (without drinks)
Except for the sashimi, each course was well presented and full of flavour. My particular favourites were the scampi nigiri and wagu steak followed closely by the seared scallop course.
While the sashimi was fresh, It didn’t appeal to me however I don’t think you could order a Japanese tasting menu without some form of sashimi making an appearance?
The wait staff were friendly and attentive.
Altogether we had a very pleasant dinner and I would recommend a visit for those who are looking for a premium Japanese fine dining experience.
The best japanese restaurant ever👍🏻 Had chef's selection of signature dishes and all the dishes were absolutely amazing & fresh. Friendly and professional staffs. Scampi nigiri & lamb cutlets are definitely the must.
Divine!!! The food is delicious, with plenty of vegan options which are incredibly tasty, as well as meat and seafood option. Highlights were the oysters, kingfish and spicy tofu. The cocktails are so special - try the velveteen for something special! Cool vibe and friendly staff. Would return in a hurry!
Ordered the tasting menu, portions are slightly small but well presented. Nice atmosphere with all tables seated. We were lucky enough to be seated infront of a chef, who carefully carved each fish effortlessly. There is also a cocktail bar serving fresh cocktails of your choice, it suited nicely. Prices is on the high end losing a star.
