Our meal at the Owl House in Sydney was simply outstanding, with excellent service provided Emir and Lizzie in a warm, welcoming environment that was trendy, but unpretentious. We opted for the degustation which was course-after-course of the most wonderful dishes combining ingredients in innovative ways to create a really unique experience. We paired our food with the cocktail recommendations which were equally excellent and which complemented each course perfectly. I cannot recommend this place enough for special occasions, and will definitely go there again in the future! 😎

Amir, Owen and their team of chefs in the kitchen have landed on a winner. An intimate experience where you can sit down for a meal, or do as we did and sit up at the bar for the 8 course degustation, paired with cocktails.

The staff are so very hospitable and care about your experience. If you are in Sydney, Australia, this place is something you cannot just pass up.

Location, Location, Location. The Owl House is in a great spot where you can sit in or sit outside watching the world go by whilst you enjoy a refreshing beverage or two and experience delicious food from a menu that has amazingly tasting dishes. We both started with cocktails. Sir had Titanic. This was Champagne sorbet, Cîroc vodka, St. Germain elderflower liqueur, verjus, grapes and sparkling wine. A very interesting drink having the “iceberg” as Champagne. This was a lovely refreshing cocktail.

Eight good years for this true local gem ends this week before they move on to new pastures up the road on Victoria St where Tigerbakers used to be. Owner and Sommelier Amir Halpert is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet and it's always a true pleasure when I get to chat with him. As my final week drink choice the 'The Bushfire' ($20) with Botanic Australis bushfire gin by Mt Uncle Distillery, orange peel and bitters caught my eye on a cold Winters night. The description of “A Fair Dinkum smokin' gin Old Fashioned” was most appropriate. Loved this drink with the right smokiness and plenty of botanical love. Thanks so much Amir for your kind shout. I look forward to checking out the new Owl House which will eventually be open for breakfast, lunch and dinners and a bar that I hope will retain the lovely cosy bar intimacy many have appreciated and loved at The Owl House.

Probably the smallest restaurant that I've dined in yet. Downstairs in the bar and you dine upstairs. Maybe 30max can dine up there in one sitting.

A lot of variety on the menu, even a degustation course. The cocktails are quite nice but have tried better elsewhere.

The ox tail croquette was interesting. Not cheesy like most. Had a creamy texture inside and crunchy out. Very earthy/savoury taste to it. Would have liked a little more sauce as the batter was a tad dry.

The mushroom entre was nice, light and fresh. The crispy calamari want crispy but still nice. Not often do you see pomegranate in a restaurant and I love! Pomegranates. The calamari was easy to eat not chewy or tough.

My John Dory was cooked really well, nice and flaky didn't even need a knife to cut it. The black pearl barley was a little too salty for my liking but with a little everything on the plate it wasn't too bad.
Unfortunately the buck breast was the hardest to eat. Maybe it was the fermented black salsify that we weren't used to. The taste really through us off and he breast was rubbery and hard to cut through. Would've been nice if the skin was crispy for some crunch to the dish.

Atmosphere is lively and loud, probably because we had two parties of 8-10 dining with us also. Nice weekday date night restaurant though

This was my first time returning to Owl House since my last negative review which to be fair was definitely skewed because of the service. However I returned here upon hearing great things about the degustation with matching wines or cocktails and I've got to say...I'm so impressed!!

The standout dishes were the scallops, terraine, lamb and the strawberries and white chocolate dessert was just HEAVEN!!!! I could eat that for the rest of my life haha

The prawns were not what I expected, although a tasty dish, I would have liked a more generous serving.

Although, combined with all the cocktails and wine we were undoubtedly full by the end of it. I loved that you could switch between the wine or cocktails on each dish, that's not something very common for degustations and there's nothing like kicking off your meal with some oysters and sake!

The service was also fantastic and despite our rowdiness the staff were extremely friendly and accomodating. I'm now in love with this place and will be back!

Degustation with matching COCKTAILS!. My birthday dinner with friends. Heard about this place from Urban List’s article “The Perfect Pair - Food and Booze pairings in Sydney”. Located in Darlinghurst is a quirky bar called the Owl House.

Seductive little place tucked in Darlinghurst. My favourite things here are the snacks and entrees, of which I tried the oxtail croquettes, scallops and open tart.

Oxtail croquette had a rich creamy interior and crisp exterior and the oxtail and bone marrow combination was not too overpowering. Scallops were perfectly seared, sweet and still springy. The scallops were served with black pudding (a tad overdone) and a luscious carrot puree. The open tart was quite interesting and I enjoyed the flavour combination of field mushrooms, goats cheese, pumpkin and sage butter.

We then tried the spatchcock and pork 3 ways. I thought the spatchcock was well executed with moist flesh in the centre and a rather crisp exterior, served with some corn and onion risotto, which was tremendously flavourful. The pork 3 ways was good but didn't hit it out of the park.

Dessert however was most unusual and we didn't enjoy both the honey and dijon mustard ice-cream or the quince tart. Both had a rather sour quality to it and the ice-cream was heavily overpowered by the rhubarb. You really couldn't taste much else and my sugar cravings were not satisfied!

Lovin' the entrees and main but skip dessert!

Had a dinner party for 16, the food was sensational, the service was sensational! Highly recommend this place! The owner was very attentive, made everyone feel welcome, serves amazing cocktails and created a great atmosphere. He even allowed split drinks bills, which made it much easier at the end of the night!

The Owl House’s new digs on Victoria Street manage to keep the same cosy ambience as the former Crown Street bar. Rather than a narrow terrace, it’s now a dugout bar, tucked between Monkey Magic and Darlinghurst’s best sourdough pit stop, Infinity Bakery. Owner Amir Halpert has cleverly kept the gang together, transplanting both his chef and his bar manager Owen Davies, as well as the very bar he served behind, over to the new space. It’s nice to walk into a new space where everyone already knows your name, and have your post-work beverage of choice – the Corpse Reviver # 2 – lined up on the bar waiting. After it strips away the remains of the day from my palate, I move onto Mezcalin ($19). With smoky mezcal and plum jam balanced by lime, a swirl of tobacco syrup and a rosemary salt rim, it’s the perfect slow sipper against a meandering Cheese Board ($29/3 cheeses) adventure. We opt for a tale of three cows, with a washed rind Pont L’eveque from Basse-Normandie, a Saint Agur blue cheese and a British semi-hard Larder & Co Oak Smoked Cheddar from Devon, against lavosh, muscatels and honeycomb. A homely Charcuterie Board ($21) with house-made mortadella and rillettes rounded out with jamón Serrano, is served with toast, pickled onions and cornichons. The toast to charcuterie ratio is out, but it’s an easy fix with a Daily Baked Bread ($5) add-on, accompanied by Hilal’s za’atar and local olive oil. On this visit I was a bit more interested in drinking a smooth, butter-infused Bulleit bourbon Buttered Fashion ($24) than exploring the newly extended wine list. We also left the wider menu alone sufficing with some Pambula Oysters ($4/each) served both au natural, and with the house dressing – a mignonette granita that worked out nicely too. The big question will be how does my favourite bar perform at brunch? The lure of a breakfast cocktail means I’ll undoubtedly bring you some news on that front before the year is out...

The degustation menu is fantastic, with a delectable selection of food and wine pairings. We deeply enjoyed the gnocchi, brick pastry prawns, and ox-tail croquette. The cocktails are also delicious.

A funky, tiny, bar and restaurant. Great atmosphere and our service was outstanding. The degustation menu is six small plates with matching cocktails (served as halves). You can have matching wine, but don't bother, the cocktails are the main gig and it's fun to think through how they match the dishes. You can make your own judgement on the food, but I thought the mushrooms were spectacular, likewise the prawns with brick pastry and smoked enoki. The other dishes less so.

Always a great night. Degustation menu is always very enjoyable. Drinks to match work extremely well. Owen and his staff are very friendly and it feels very intimate and special. Always look forward to dining there. Loving the new venue on Victoria Street. Cocktail or wine on the couch or at the bar.

What a find! I had the skirt steak and it blew my mind. The potato gratin side was an art form. Can’t recommend enough.

My favourite place to call into for afternoon cocktails!! A great selection on the $10 happy hour menu, and the usual suspects on the regular menu. Bar staff are AMAZING and with the comfy seating feels like I'm relaxing at home or a friends place!! Also great for weekend brunch, dinner dates, anything you like really! Love seeing regulars in here. A great local venue. Keep up the good work guys :)

A little dance of happiness happened when I discovered that one of my favourite Sydney eats had moved to just a few doors away from my favourite place to stay in Sydney! The Owl House offers excellent and interesting food and wine, and super service. As a lone female diner I was welcomed, called by name and superbly looked after. I will be back! Love this place. Used to love where it was but I am not disappointed with its new look/location. Although it is less small bar, I love the different sections and the fact you can sit outside, inside, on a couch or stare at the bar tender at the bar. great cocktails and attention. Some amazing dishes there too. Recommend it for a slightly fancy night out with friends.
