We visited here to check out their baked goods they had for sale during the pandemic whilst not operating as a restaurant.
The queues were long and stretched for a wait time of about 45 minutes whilst we were there. Could have been a bit more organised with a signage on what they had for sale or what they had run out of as once you got to the front they had to explain to each customer what was actually for sale or what they had run out of! The service was quite hospitable once they had served you.
As it took quite a while once I got to the front I ordered quite a few baked goods which included a Chocolate Croissant, Cream Buns, an Almond Cake, Ricotta Cake, Chocolate Cake & Cannolis. They tasted quite good and made for a wonderful afternoon tea. I enjoyed the chocolate cake the most.
Marta is a restaurant in Rushcutters Bay, focused on bringing culina Romana, the traditional cuisine of Rome to Sydney. The Italian restaurant focuses on using fresh Australian produce to make some delicious dishes, whether it be gnocchi, lasagne, pappardelle, parmigiana, porchetta or even osso bucco. They also have a great range of wines and spritzers.
Eating at Marta is like eating in Rome. It’s Roman food with a modern twist. All of the food we had was absolutely delicious, especially the pasta. I love the casual vibes of the restaurant and their impressive wine list which also includes orange wines. #allroadsleadtomarta
We went for a group dinner. Delicious Roman banquet. Outstanding pea, artichoke, broad bean and buratta entree. Similarly excellent gnocchi. Excellent food - really delicious authentic Italian. Good service and nice atmosphere. We will be back.
We previously ate at Popolo several times. Loved Popolo. However Marta exceeded our expectations. The food and service could not be flawed. No pics of food cause it was gone in a flash. Will definitely return soon!!!
The real deal! Classic and classy Italian meals with outstanding service and a genuine ‘Roman’ atmospheric. Enjoy Flavio’s hospitality and just soak up the ambience! Thoroughly recommended.
I love everything about this place. The interior is stunning and the courtyard, with its relaxed seating and lush little garden, makes me feel like I could be sitting anywhere, even in a little street in Rome! One of my favourite things about Marta is the menu, it indulges my love of eating continual small plates of different tastes and still gives me the option for a proper second course. Loving the Cacio E Pepe (pasta), the Vitello, and the Gnocchi. Best lemon sorbet in town hands down. Great vibe, always fun.
We book our board directors dinners at Marta. We used to spread them around but now they only want to go to Marta. We love this place. The food, the wine, the location, the service - it ticks every box for us.
Love this place for family and business. Was a huge fan of Popolo but this has stepped it up.
We've hosted team dinners on week nights (recommend the outdoor tables) and long Sunday lunches. Tomahawk is my go to and the wine recommendations are spot on. Great kids menu. Feels more relaxing here in the courtyard than others around.
Fantastic food and service! We had three different types of pasta and they were all extremely tasty! The service was fabulous - our waitress was really attentive and suggested some wonderful food and wine selections. The restaurant has a great vibe and lovely decor, it’s perfect for groups of friends and for a more intimate dinner.
We will be back!
This was incredible, came for a birthday party and I have to say this is some of the best Italian food I've ever had!
The octopus had a perfect char and melted in your mouth, pasta seeped flavour with each bite, the fried gnocchi had an amazing crunch and the octopus stuffed fried zucchini flower was to die for.
10/10. Definitely going back
In one of the most successful restaurant pivots in a crisis, MARTA Osteria has rolled out their weekend Roman-style bakery to appease weekday boredom while we all work and study from home. With a clear COVIDSafe plan in place, the staff are inside the restaurant, and the patrons widely spaced in a pedestrian square, queuing a metre-and-a-half apart for crisp Italian pastries and gelato plucked from a gelato cart.
Owner-chef Flavio Carnevale was a baker before he was a chef, and gee it shows in airy, chewy, salt-crusted focaccia with Italian mortadella and provolone encased within. Even better is an airy round of focaccia studded with blistered cherry tomatoes and anchovies for a big umami kick. Sfogliatine sourdough puff pastry is created into crisp sandwiches with prosciutto and cheese.
To finish there are maritozzi – sweet brioche buns filled with cream – that are pleasant in texture and not overly sweet. Though the shattery pastry millefoglie with golden mascarpone and blueberries is hard to beat for your work from home elevenses. The five items came to $54, which isn’t cheap for pastries, but when everything hits the mark and the restaurant is able to keep all their staff working through Sydney’s second lockdown, I am happy to pay it.
Best Italian pastry in Sydney! Always make me come back for more. Be early as possible for weekend, always long queue but fast and friendly service. Very recommended!
This is a comment on the baked goods, not the restaurant.
My friend introduced me to this Italian pastry - Sfogliatelle. Even after seeking guidance from Google, I still don’t know how to pronounce it. Something like "sfohl-ya-TEL-le"
According to Google, it is made from a thin, kneaded dough, with a layer of lard/fat, rolled up into a cigar shape, chilled and then cut into the required pieces. For each piece, create a hollow for the filling and then bake.
It is interesting - layers of thin, leaf-like, flaky, "dryish", crust enveloping a filling (custard, pistachio etc.) that is not overly sweet. Definitely something to try.
Best Italian pastry’s, Great for a weekend adventure! Super fresh, incredibly delicious and worth the wait. I recommend you coming earlier on weekends as there is always a long queue but it moves relatively fast and the service is friendly. The bakery opens 8.30am on weekends. We got there at 10:30am and there was still plenty pastries left over and they are constantly baking so it’s always fresh and warm! We got (pictured) sour cherry and pistachio Sfogliatelle which I highly recommend, ham, cheese and truffle Sfogliatelle style croissant - also highly recommend! Spinach, ham, cheese and egg roll, good but wouldn’t urgently get again. (Not pictured): custard croissant (highly recommend) and 2 coffees came to around $59. Highly recommend !
One of the best italian Sydney has to offer.
Quality ingredients - authentic Roman - great vibe. It was our 12th visit 🤪 so it stood the time of visit time and time again.
Wish it was closer to the beaches 🤤
Fantastic bakery. Focaccia schnitzel sandwich was incredible and the pastries equally delicious. The only small tip I would give is put a menu out for people in the queue to look at - it was hard to know what everything was when we got to the counter which meant we had to ask the guy loads of questions about what everything was. Otherwise delightful and will be back weekly!! 😋
