Sugar Rays is a new bar in Redfern that as a nice and cosy vintage feel. Its menu is newly created and has a great mixture of bar food and unique cocktails. We came here for a bite and drink one Friday night, keen to kick off our weekend. For our cocktails we ordered the Rosamund with vodka, amaretto, shiraz, lemon and strawberry. This was an interesting drink, quite strong with lots of flavours so it is more of an acquired taste.

Sugar Ray’s is Surry Hills newest resident. It’s a cool bar named after the former champion boxer and has photographs and memorabilia adorning the walls. Sugar Ray’s is on the corner of Bourke and Cleveland Streets, an area fast becoming a hub for good food and drinks. There is a huge bar in the middle with ample seating both inside and out, and a lovey window setting, perfect for people watching. We arrived one early Friday evening and found the place to be packed, with some cool live R&B music on the floor. One guy with a magical voice and his offsider delivering some serious improvised saxophone tunes.

There’s some serious cocktail-making prowess going on at this newly-revamped small bar on the Cleveland Street-end of Surry Hills. With 20+ alcoholic concoctions, Sugar Ray’s Bar doesn’t skimp on choice when it comes to its cocktail menu. Everything from mezcal and cognac to banana-infused bourbon and Japanese whisky makes an appearance.

A new spot in Surry Hills to catch up for drinks. There are a few interesting cocktails as well as classic favourites. We had the Cleopatra with vodka, elderflower, fig, vanilla & Master Miyagi flip with Japanese whisky, matcha, coconut. The food menu is small but what we ordered were delicious- particularly the pork belly on corn puffs and fried chicken!

Surry Hills is full of great dining spots and although I’m more often in the area for brunch, there is so much more on offer. We’re here at the recently opened Sugar Ray’s Bar today, on the busy corner of Crown and Cleveland streets, and we’re actually loving the comfy homey feel of the studded leather lounges and framed photos on the wall. Mostly of sports, Sugar Ray’s Bar is a US Sport bar afterall!

There’s no shortage of creative cocktails on the menu, the Passionfruit Caiprinha is a refreshingly sweet fruity fix whilst the Mister Miyagi Flip was unlike any other cocktail we’d had before!

Cute little bar nestled on the corner in Darlinghurst. Great interior deco, reminds us of old movies, where the mobsters hang out smoking cigars. Photos in frames line the whole wall, large comfortable looking lounges, great for a long night of drinks and chatterings. There are tables outside also, under the heaters.

They have a wide range of cocktails and wines available. A weekly special cocktail is also on offer.

Our favs were definitely the salt and vinegar fries and the smoked mac and cheese balls, then the wagyu sliders.

Sugar Ray’s Bar in Surry Hills occupies a prime location on Cleveland Street, at the Eastern Distributor end. A lot of foot traffic passes through after a sports game at nearby Moore Park, so this place is bound to get busy. Brought to you by Dan and the team at Salt Vine (Crown St), it is hardly surprising that the food would be just as good.

Looking for somewhere to chill with some drinks and bar snacks, look no further than Sugar Rays Bar for a chilled out spot. There is a good featured cocktails list on offer. Cocktails pictured here (Left to right) are the Wild Lady Cleopatra and Rah Rah. There is also a decent one page selection of bar snacks, we tried the barramundi fish on beetroot tortillas (this was my fave), mac and cheese bites and the chilli olives (great infusion of flavour). This is a good spot if you’re after somewhere quite for a drink with friends or a date. It’s in a good spot on the corner of Cleveland and Bourke St in Surry Hills.

Bad news if you are looking for Iris Black on the corner of Cleveland and Bourke Street in Surry Hills – it’s gone. The good news is that on the same location, a whole new American-style bar known as Sugar Ray’s has been born. Two leather lounges are the centrepiece of the intimate venue but we opted for the window seats (best for people watching) while sipping on signature cocktails curated to showcase Sugar Ray’s unconventional take on mixology and ambition to become a nightlife hotspot. For a non-rum drinker, the house rum blend with pineapple, lemon, vanilla and cinnamon (Woodstock, $19) went down a treat while the Le Clou ($20) is a slightly more masculine drink with cognac, apply brandy, lemon and spices.

There’s some serious cocktail-making prowess going on at this newly-revamped small bar on the Cleveland Street-end of Surry Hills. With 20+ alcoholic concoctions, Sugar Rays Bar doesn’t skimp on choice when it comes to its cocktail menu. My recommendations: The East Side (gin, cucumber, mint and lemon), La Paloma (tequila, grapefruit, soda, lime and salt) and the Rah Rah (tequila, mandarin shrub and champagne). The ‘bar snacks’ are also levels ahead of your average peanuts and chips. The salt and vinegar fries and smoked mac and cheese balls are beyond incredible. The Sugar Rays Bar are definitely channelling some old Hollywood glamour with burgundy chesterfield lounges, frame-filled walls and red velvet curtains. Throw in a Persian rug, a few plants and warm lighting and you have a space that’s inviting, sophisticated and intimate. Yep, this is a solid choice for relaxed drinks with friends.

I love a local place that feels welcoming and strikes the right balance of sophistication and relaxation. We dropped into Sugar Ray's on a week night to review its menu of eclectic flavours and cocktail favourites. As bloggers, the very first thing we notice is the friendly welcome and the general vibe of the place.. our host Chiara was sooo warm and welcoming. The food and drink were innovative, but never too fussy. We tried the barramundi tortillas, chocolate panna cotta with bourbon foam, crispy pork belly, and Cleveland greens... all were top notch... but especially the panna cotta...definitely get this! Will be back to Sugar Ray's to try out the menu as it develops.

A sophisticated bar and tapas menu with a great range of drinks including craft beers, a top mix of wines and in particular, some beautifully crafted cocktails to get that party started. On a more low key day, come and sip over your drink on a lazy afternoon. The space takes you back a few eras with its dark painted walls full of framed images, leather couches and Persian Rugs, blink and you could be in the Jazz era. This makes for a super cool environment and the background music gives it a relaxing ambience. The bartender whips us up a cocktail ‘the Wild lady’ as well as a mocktail of their concoction. Extremely skilled and knowledgeable, you will be happy with any drink ordered here. The food menu is primarily tapas/bite size style, perfect for a nibble with your drink. The menu is just droolworthy! Salt and Vinegar fries, mac and cheeseballs, southern fried chicken, and pork belly puffs just to name a few. It’s clear there’s a strong Southwest American influences here. On this visit, we chose their mini sliders, but with a modern touch of duck as the meat. We accompanied this with Cleveland greens, pumpkin, baby carrot, chimi churri and pecans and parmesan to flavour. There’s also South American influences, evident through their barramundi tortillas. These were so interesting, with the barramundi atop some beautifully coloured beetroot crispy tortillas, topped with guacamole and trimmings. If you’re still hungry and up for dessert, they have an ever popular pannacotta with chocolate, bourbon and pecan! Get in soon to try this cool bar and top notch menu.

If you are looking for a new cocktail bar to try, look no further than Sugar Ray’s Bar in Surry Hills located on the corner of Bourke St and Cleveland St. It’s a new player on the bar scene offering well concocted cocktails, wine, craft beer, fox sports and delectable American food bar menu. The moment you step inside, its striking collection of framed photos on the tiled wall catches your eye. It’s a comfortable and relaxing space to be in, tastefully decorated with a mix of Chesterfield lounges, tables and chairs, bar stools along with ambient lighting. Staff here are simply delightful, after we were escorted to our table, Chiara, one of the lovely staff, gave us a run through of the menu and drinks list, suggesting some of the picks for the day, which we thought sounded very good indeed, we will leave it up to Chef we replied! Refreshing is an understatement, we started the night with two equally good cocktails, thanks to mixologist Leo. I had the Alhambra and my companion had the Gin Sour, both well crafted drinks, delicious and pleasing to the eye, the sugar dust of the Alahambra adding a subtle sweetness. We were part way through our cocktails when the sliders and fries arrived, a combination of Wagyu and Duck, on the menu these are two separate items. The first we tasted was the wagyu, it was tender oozing with juice, topped with melted double cheese, bacon-onion butter and dill pickle whilst the duck was a melt in your mouth moment, coupled with a tasty onion-thyme jam butter and cranberry chutney both on soft milk buns. Crisp and golden on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside, the fries were cooked to perfection. The addition of vinegar is just a perfect touch along with a sprinkling of dried rosemary giving a pleasant flavour. Our second dish served was the Barramundi Tortilla. Beautifully presented on a wooden serving board. The colour of the in-house made squid-inked tortilla gives it instant table appeal, filled with guacamole along with saffron peperonata and baby coriander, a perfect accompaniment to the tender and generous barramundi. Dusted with paprika powder and thinly sliced limes. A round of Little Creatures beer washed down this most enjoyable dish. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit, so relaxing we cant wait to go back. It will be great to sit outside when the weather warms up and watch the world go by with delicious food and drink. Definitely a bar in Sydney worth including on your list to check out. Happy Hour is from 4pm to 6 pm. E_deliciou_s dined as guests

There’s a plethora of different bars and restaurants around Surry Hills that make it hard to decide where to head to start your weekend, or just to chill out. So I’ll make it easy, check out Sugar Ray’s. They’ve only been open under new management for a short while, with Dan (the man who brought us SaltVine) taking over as owner! You walk in and you’re instantly greeted by the hostess who shows you to a table of your choosing. It’s a very cosy space, with a number of tables, as well as couches and arm chairs to give a welcoming feel to the place. The design has a 1920’s vibe, which just adds to the sophistication element. The menu selection was fantastic, with two pages dedicated to signature and classic cocktails, and another to their great choice of American bar food. We were also told we could request any cocktails not on the menu, and the bartender would work his magic! We ordered up two cocktails to get us started. I went for a Rampton, made with scotch, artichoke aperitif, orange bitters, and finished with a peel of lemon. If anything’s going to warm you up on a winter’s night, it’s this one right here! My partner went for the Mr Miyagi Flip - not a cocktail I’ve heard of previously, but a very interesting creation. Matcha powder is used to give it that vibrant green colour, and it also uses a whole egg to complete the mix. We kept it light with the food and only ordered up two dishes: The Barramundi Tortilla, and the Pannacotta. The barramundi was presented on top of a squid-ink tortilla, with fresh guacamole, baby coriander, and a touch of saffron peperonato! An incredible flavour combination that certainly needs to be had again, and again. Order up a few of these because they won’t last long! We finished up with the pannacotta, made with a mix of chocolate and bourbon, and surrounded with the most flavourful candied pecans! Other posts I’ve seen seemed to include a bourbon foam on top, ours appeared to be lacking that. It certainly wasn’t lacking in flavour though, and that brought it back for me! Definitely one to check out if you’re in the area, or even if you’re not!

Looking for an amazing night of cocktails in an American themed cocktail bar in Surry? The head on over to Sugar Rays Bar! Perfect venue for a catch up with friends or a casual and cosy date night with an amazing cocktail and food list. Tried the Le Clou and Rampton cocktails which were cognac and scotch based, haven’t had anything like them. Despite the hard liquor contained, they were a delight to drink! Food was also a crowd pleaser and we couldn’t help ourselves but try almost the entire menu! We ordered: Southern fried chicken Smoked mac and cheese balls Pork belly corn puffs Duck sliders Cleveland Greens Pannacotta Favourites were the fried chicken, Mac and cheese balls and pork belly puffs. The panacotta was also delicious, served with a bourbon foam which definitely is not for the faint hearted. Overall a great little night out with friendly and helpful staff in a cosy and comfortable setting.
