This place is not for people with fragile egos.
The service can be a little intimidating, but thats expected when you come across cantonese cuisine as its quite a dominant language.
Went there with the family on the weekend to try out their Yum Cha.
The food is really good with a few exceptions. Must go back to see if the quality is consistent.
Shout outs to the beef balls, and pork spare ribs, tofu with prawn paste and the BBQ pork buns.
Tried a very large range of Dim Sum dishes, majority of them are very satisfying.
The chicken feet needed a little longer cooking to become softer, the eggplant with prawn paste carried too much oil. The beef vermicelli wrap (Cheong Fun) skin was a little too thick, however flavour of the beef was on point.
Still a lot more dishes I need to try out.
Atmosphere can be loud, but decor can put you to sleep as its a bit dull.
Price range is extremely cheap compared to a lot of other Yum cha places.
85 dollars for 4 people who ate around 5-6 peoples worth of food.
Ordered Roast duck and BBQ pork for take away as well which were very good in flavour.
Authentic and delicious food. Reminds me of business trips to shanghai. Plenty of choice and plenty of tables. Yet you still feel cramped in. Which is the way to do it!
Not sure why the ratings for this place is so low. I was taken here and the food was pretty decent. We came in the middle of session one, around 12pm, so all the food was out and about, and we dived right in. We didn't see any hargow or chicken feet, which I usually like to eat but I was so full I wasn't that disappointed. Service was quick, servings were in large portions, and the price wasn't too expensive considering we ordered 3 small dishes, 1 medium large and 2 large (we paid under $50 for two). I will definitely come back, I love good yumcha.
Tasty yum cha with the standard variety at reasonable prices. Very warm service. Spacious environment which is especially convenient if you need to bring a baby bassinet or have a high chair. Usually packed but we managed to secure a table as a walk-in with 5 people and a high chair when it opened at 11:30.
Probably one of my favorite yum cha place in the area, mainly because service is fast and there's always a constant rotation of dishes.
The food itself is pretty standard yum cha fare though, nothing exceptional, but still tasty. I think the flavors really depends on how busy they are on that particular day.
First of all sorry the photos that i taken was not appetizing as i was too hungry and forgot to take until almost done lol.
Had yum cha here with big family, cant really compare with secret kitchen (doncaster) but it was descent, i love their sugar donut, their chicken feet wasnt bad either. Overall good yum cha in the suburb.
The Girl With Blue Hair
+4.5
Not sure what's wrong with vintage because authenticity is always good when it comes to food! The restaurant looks like a traditional Chinese restaurant in the 80s. These gems are rare now (because most people opt for fanciness) and very hard to find. The staff are efficient and there are lots of regular diners. All the dim sums were freshly made. You can tell if a Chinese restaurant has a great dim sum chef when you try their "har gao" (steamed prawn dumplings). The prawn dumpling should be semi-transparent and should not fall apart when you pick it up with your chopsticks. Amazing food and service, will definitely come back again.
3 or 3.5 I don't know, this is token chinese aussie 1970's as fark decor is redonk from a 1980's America movie with a chinese restaurant scene seriously. The sweet and sour pork is probably the best in town no joke it's perfect 10/10 there other dishes ok yum cha ok a bit pricey though needs a major refurb if they wanna keep trading as even FOB chinese think it's old fashion. - "As the times they are a changing." - Bob Dylan Nobel prize = WTH
Been going here for ages and have never been disappointed with the quality of the food, even with takeaway. The duck and rice is an absolute must. Always crispy and full of flavour and the rice is always perfectly cooked and soft. Definitely recommend to others and am a little confused with the low ratings. Reasonable pricing for amazing and flavourful food
As with Richard, I'm confused about the low ratings on Zomato. I've been to Crown Palace countless times over the past 15 years or so and although the quality of food has been very up and down (it's probably changed owners/management a handful of times), my most recent visit left a very good impression and it is definitely one of my favourite places for yum cha now.
Of all the dishes we ordered, my absolute favourite was the lao sha bao (runny salted egg yolk buns). It's probably the best rendition of the bao I've had in Melbourne. Same goes with the char siu bao and the har gow - one of the best I've tasted here. I also really enjoyed the fried calamari, char siu rice rolls, stuffed bean curd rolls and fried turnip cake. The siu mai were less impressive. They were unusually large (which I found is never a good sign), and just didn't taste right. The lao por bing (wife cakes) tasted a little flat. The lotus filling was different to the typical filling. It was oddly gelatinous and translucent, and really pale. We finished off our meal with a mango sago soup. It was very brightly yellow, and the mango flavour tasted a little artificial, so I'm suspecting they used syrup. Overall though, I really enjoyed the food and I think it's of better quality and more authentic than many other yum cha places I have been to in Melbourne.
We got a major shock when the bill came...because it was so bloody cheap! It came to less than 30 per person and although this might sound like a decent amount, let me just say that we ordered a LOT of food. It was way too much food than we could finish and we all rolled out of the restaurant. This is probably going to be my go to yum cha place from now on.
Tasty and popular yum cha, it's been around for decades so its a shame the Vermont South restaurant is closing down soon. They're continuing on in some capacity as Ocean King on Kingsway, Glen Waverley.
I love eating their dim sum. Suit my taste. The owner is so friendly and service is good too. Definitely will be back again. Must try their all types of prawn dim sum. My favourite 😍 price is reasonable as well. Must try guys 😋
Local Chinese restaurant in Vermont South. Lots of Chinese folk inside is always a good sign. Live fish cooked with ginger and spring onions was the standout. The seafood basket was also good. Staff were generally helpful and efficient.
Good yum cha choice out in the outer eastern suburbs. Reasonably priced and plenty of varierty of dim sums.
Attracts a good crowd on the weekends but it's fairly large so usually you don't need a booking.
Plenty of car parking spots outside.
Always good, consistent yum cha here. Have made this our regular now since New Royal has closed and Taipan is gone. Good food, quick polite service and it won't break the bank. Some of my favorite dishes that others don't serve, especially (not 100% sure I'm correct) mock duck roll, which crisp bean curd sink wrapped around diced vegetables and mushrooms. Try to make it at least once a month.
Good food, good flavours, lots of parking available outside. Take away options available if you're on the go and want a quick rice and meat dish. Open for lunch yum cha or a family dinner
