Review The Himalayan Kitchen - Adelaide

Ruby Green
The best dining experience in my life. Firstly, the menu has a great range for all dietary requirements, restrictions, and lifestyles. Secondly, the food itself was magnificent! Thirdly, the staff were kind, interactive, and entertaining. And finally, the lovely man who worked there gave us all cultural instruments to try out! Made for a very fun night!!!

Friendly service from the moment we arrived. The food was splendid. They have a reasonable wine list with pricing that is fair.We took our own bottled wine and paid the reasonable $14.50 corkage charge. Would we go back ? Yes, definitely.

Dinner at @thehimalayankitchen from a couple of weeks ago: good food, friendly service, and the chef even came out to say hello and asked if we wanted extra chilli 😜😍🤤. . Momos: homemade steamed dumplings. These were really tasty! The dough wasn't too thick, and the fillings were big. . Pakora onion fritters: can't go wrong with these! . Spicy potato salad: they gave this one to us to try. It was quite spicy! But really tasty 😋😜. . A selection of curries, with pappadums and basmati rice. All the curries were super yummy, and were fairly mild. The added chilli on the side was excellent 😅😊. . Mango lassi: yum yum yum 🤤🤤.

I stated with Vegetarian Momos, Homemade steamed dumplings, filled with seasonal vegetables and fresh herbs and served with a fresh coriander and tomato achar, The achar sauce is perfection. For Mains I had Khasico Masu - Slow cooked tender goat in traditional Tibetan manner enriched with mustard oil and fenugreek. This is a superbly tender. Make sure to fold your garlic roti, basted side out, and take a moment to taste it, it has a true depth of complexity to the flavour and dip it in the goat curry sauce, if you don't, you are missing out! If it's not offered, ask for the pickled chilli, roasted, on the side. Go gently, but if you like a little wow, then this will bring it.

Ridiculous. Only serve a $50 banquet p.p on Valentines day. No usual menu to order, and the reason is fully booked but the shop is not even half full and people walk in without booking still secure a seat.

If you like Indian food, but sick of seeing menus with the same old stuff, then this is for you

The menu wasn't very expansive, but what was on there was top notch.

Staff was very friendly, knowledgeable, attentive, and helpful.

Great food, great service & great wines. There were plenty of vegetarian options and all the food was excellent. The food was spicy without being too hot and while the restaurant is BYO, they have a great wine and beer list so we didn't bother with corkage!

Nice relaxing ambience, friendly service and food was delicious, with generous serves. Highly recommended. Looking forward to returning soon.

Amazing! Went out with my partner to try something different / this exceeded our expectations. The coconut chicken curry was divine! Highly recommended it!

It's an experience to eat at this fine establishment.. Authentic food, great selection of wine and the hospitality to match. We were served by one amazing girl in her school uniform, obviously still in primary school and wiry big life ambition. After our meal were were treated with meditation bowls, Tibetan horns and a tour of the the promises to experience all of the trinkets.

Good environment. Excellent service and veey interactive. Chef came out to ask about the food. Highly recommend the prawn curry. Sauce was good and prawns were tender.

Ambiance is pretty impressive. Furnitures and fixtures of nepalese/tibetan theme are on the spot ( i love the trumpet-like object on the wall and the singing bowls) . However, the welcoming lady wasn't welcoming and she did not even smile at all but, the primary student on her school uniform girl saved the day as she was very bubbly to greet us, shes probably the owner's child. We ordered a couple of entrees consisting of pieces of chicken, dumplings, onion fritters and spring rolls. They were a bit dry and average in flavour, the dipping sauce may have salvage the dryness. For mains we had curries of goat, fresh water fish and chicken plus the basmati rice. The goat and fish are the ones i like , the chicken is very similar to an indian buttered chicken . The rice was immaculate white and nicely steamed. In my view, the food was a lighter version of indian cuisine in terms of flavours . Overall, it was good but not great. Now for the tibetan singing bowls as you might wonder, it was amazing! Google it.

Authentic Nepalese food, reasonably priced. Enjoyed the paneer w Spinach. Alcohol quite expensive ($8/glass of wine). Nice atmosphere .

Himalayan Kitchen serves pretty decent tasty food. I can't comment much given the little (zero) knowledge of Nepalese food but it was reasonably tasty. The ambience was cozy with art&craft to keep you in the mood. Especially enjoyed the end of the dinner where they taught us to use the "meditation bowl". Recommended if your after something a tad different but it is on the pricier end of things.

Vegan and Gluten Free!. Decided to try this place out on a whim and found that almost all of their vegetarian dishes were vegan AND gluten free and they even had a vegan and GF entree! The food is a little pricey but absolutely delicious, but the restaurant itself and the atmosphere is definitely worth the price. Highly recommended :)

BEAUTIFUL!. I have been here a few times and they never seem to disappoint, the food is spectacular....would highly recommend, the staff are very friendly and efficient, tables have always been cleared quickly between courses and always make sure you are not left wanting. :)

Fabulous no fuss fragrant food. The lovely people at Himalayan Kitchen threw in some tasty vegetable fritters (pakoras perhaps?) for free with our takeaway order of fish curry, vegetable curry and dahl - the lot was painlessly gluten and dairy free, lovely and fragrant, and made substantially hotter by the chilli pickle I ordered on the side (having been disappointed by bland nepalese food in the past). We got very decent amounts of food for our money, too. Will be back.

Amazing and great for vegans!! The food here was unbelievably tasty, I cannot wait to back. One of the best dhalls I've ever had. Although there weren't a huge amount of vegan curries, the staff were extremely helpful in pointing out what was vegan and there was more than I expected.

Finally, somewhere we all liked!!!. So full, SO GOOD! Loved this restaurant. Excellent food with something for everyone, including a fussy ex chef who has criticised everywhere else we have been before, a 9 year old who doesn't like spicy and myself who has a large appetite. Everyone left extremely happy with the great food and friendly family service. We had the banquet- great idea for tasting lots of different flavours. Even if you don't think you have room, ask for the dessert menu, the fluffy dumplings are so light and beautiful with a delicate cardamon sauce and the chia tea is soooo much better than the commercial stuff in supermarkets. Yum...a great place to be on a winters night that's for sure.

Warming in winter. A cosy restaurant to visit in winter. Lovely atmosphere, warming dishes. Try the signature goat curry. Wine list is well priced and a decent house wine is offered by the carafe. A warning that the use of salt, particularly in the daal, could be considered excessive by some (however this appears to be characteristic of Nepalese food).

Fantastic!. Fabulous food, service and atmosphere. Fresh flavours and something for everyone. They made my Mum's birthday very special with their traditional instruments.
I think I've found a new favourite :-)

Fairly bland, all of our different meat dishes were virtually indistinguishable and the dhal also lacked flavour. Ambiance is nice.
Martin
Great, fresh tasting flavoursome food. Pity about the reluctanct and slow front of house service. Even with only 4 patrons in the restaurant we couldn't get service or even the bill .... Disappointing

One word. Yum!. Absolutely beautiful food. So much flavour, it was truly delicious. The food here is inexpensive and the restaurant itself is very lovely. Great value for money and really, really great food.

Delicacies to new heights!. It was hard to mistake the scent of crushed Daikon as I entered the Himalayan Kitchen on Melbourne Street. After nearly fifty years I thought I would have forgotten the mordant scent of the Daikon root, however the pungent odor still lingered in my memory. With the flutter of an eyelid I felt myself back on the Indo-Gangetic plains at the tail end of a journey that could only be likened to classic Kipling fiction. What seemed to me like a fleeting moment was long enough to encourage my wife to step on my foot and awake me from my musing as a waiter arrived to usher us to a table. Though the years had evaded my careful watch, I just couldn’t help but reminisce back to the Nepalese Autumn of 1964 when my friend Nischal a Nepalese Gurkha, and I had foolishly attempted to ascend Mount Gangapurna. A wry smile arose on my face as I explained to my wife that Gangapurna is located in the Annapurna ranges, and is rather fittingly a Sanskrit term for “Full of Food!” While I perused the menu, I found numerous delectable treats that had nourished me all those years ago whilst we wearily trekked down the Kali Gandakki Gorge into the Pokhara Valley after a failed attempt at summit.

To begin I insisted on ordering both the Momo and Singada. The combinations of simple herbs and spices mixed with soft chick pea glutens and home-made achar were charming but also non-intrusive when paired with our 2005 Torbreck Pict... Which had mysteriously found its way out of my cellar. Distinctly a drop with French influence, it encompassed ruggedly earthen aromas. The kind of which I would generally associate with blustery Côte d'Azur Mataro varieties. On first nosing I encountered a leathery tree bark which softened into a peppery cassis. Structurally beautiful, the wine was tall and evolved in glass to a rich and expansive drop with hints of tar and black olive. As the nectar warmed my stomach I had to titter... I certainly wasn’t this warm the last time I feasted on such delicacies!

For our main courses my wife enjoyed the Sekewa whilst I continued to sample the foods that had kept me sustained throughout my expedition. Selection did not take a great deal of deliberation as I edged straight for the Annapurna Macha. Simple in nature, the fish and basil essences united with poise, and humbly accepted each others presence in much the same way as a misty Himalayan morning accepts the first rays of sun. The chef must have added a great deal of chilli as my eyes were oddly watering while I remembered finishing the same dish in the company of Nischal at the Kashi shrine, on the banks of Ganga. Though the feeling of rejuvenation was not the same as in sixty four, I still felt a sense of satisfaction and purpose. By the end of our banquet it was almost as if the chef sensed my mystic connection to his homeland. He sat with me to enjoy a glass of his personal Raksi which he timed perfectly to coincide with my wife’s temporary absence from the table. A superb meal in lavish settings. Well done Himalayan Kitchen, truly a voyage from kitchen to plate! 3.6 Golden Lapels.

Thank you, Frouche Van Der Lopen

Ambiance: 3.4/5 Golden Lapels
Food: 3.6/5 Golden Lapels
Service: 3.9/5 Golden Lapels

Just wonderful. The family is gorgeous - we were taken care of my the whole team, chef dad, waitress mum, maitre d eight year old and her sidekick brother who are utterly gorgeous and precocious. The atmosphere is gorgeous and peaceful and the food is just delicious (get the goat curry, you won't be disappointed!) Afterwards there were Tibetan singing bowls, jokes from the chef and lots of laughs. One of the warmest and most enjoyable experiences of eating out, I will be back!

The people here are fantastic as is the food! Mum and I wandered in at 8:30 and they sat us down smiling and didn't hurry us up at all. The goat curry was amazing and the other food was great too! Couldn't recommend this place enough :)

Came here for dinner on a Saturday night. It wasn't heaps busy, the food was good though. We had the banquet and all the curries were delicious. Service was good and attentive.

The food quality was pretty good however portion size didn't match money paid.

Fantastic as usual. If you don't go here and try the goat curry, you are missing out.
Bhim and Holly are fantastic hosts, we keep coming back as the food and service is always good.

Really yummy food, definitely would recommend this over most Indian restaurants for those who are looking for a flavoursome curry. Hoping to get back there again soon.

From the moment I walked in a was warmly welcomed and seated. As I was taken on a ride of discovery with Nepalese quisine I was offered kind advice and wonderful service. Not only was the food absolutely beautiful but it offered a wonderful alternative to an otherwise heavy curry. After my meal I was entertained by the owners charming children who introduced me to the meditation bowl and were quite open in telling me how bad I was at doing it. The himilayan kitchen was such a wonderful experience not only on palette but on the soul.

Great Food. Went for the first time on Sat 16 Feb and there were four of us and decided to have the Himalayan banquet. Came with assorted entrees, 3 curries, vegetables, pickles and rice. There was plenty of food for four and at a very reasonable price. Great setting, good service and will be returning soon!

Yum. Food was delicious! Garlic Roti from the clay oven was amazing. I had the spinach curry (forget the name now) it was excellent! The boyfriend had coconut chicken, that was just as great! Had the four seasons entree, the food was to die for, tastes so fresh and clean, with so much flavour. Reasonably priced. Amazing decor. Will definitely return!
The owner and her kids were there as we came quite late in the night, they showed us how to use Tibetan meditation bowls, was such a refreshing experience.

Food was very average. Meat was tough and slightly fatty. The flavours were lacklustre and uninspiring. Not recommended.

Now my favourite curry restauarnt. Food and surroundings absolutely fabulous. Service efficient and staff very friendly. Owners came and spoke to guests after meals were finished about their culture and it was very refreshing to be made so welcome.

Delicious food, nice atmosphere. Expensive in my opinion. Would go back.

Service was great. The lady that was serving us was informative and more than happy to answer any questions we had. The goat curry was spectacular! The atmosphere was great. It was the first time we have ever tried Nepalese food, and I'll definitely be going back for more!
David
Himalayan Help. Unusual cuisine needs that extra bit of help from those of us not familiar with it. This was lacking. The chefs special was lamb what they forgot to add was Very tuff lamb!

A true gem!. I have regularly eaten at the lovely Himalayan Kitchen for over a year now and find myself loving it more and more each time I return! The atmosphere of this restaurant is beautiful and is that perfect place to go with friends, family, a date, or even a large group. The service is always great and the staff and owners are friendly and never without a smile. Everything on the menu is incredibly tasty and very well priced. All the meats are tender and melt in your mouth, the roti breads are amazing and buttery, and the vegetarian dishes (especially the cheese and spinach) are my absolute favorite. This is such an all round lovely restaurant and one of my favorite places to eat in Adelaide!

I was very impressed with Himalayan Kitchen. Arrived on a Friday night with no booking. The service was excellent - warm and welcoming. The food was outstanding, especially the roti which was light, perfectly cooked and super fresh. The signature goat dish also excellent. Cannot fault this restaurant - will most certainly be back.

A treat!. My partner surprised me with a birthday dinner at Himalayan Kitchen and I was very happy as I had been wanting to try it for years!

The atmosphere inside is lovely. It's warm, friendly, and the aromas of different spices wafting every now and then from the kitchen are salivatingly delicious!

We opted for the Wild Goat, the Palungo Ko Tarkari (very much like a Palak Paneer) and just had to try the chicken dumplings and pakoras for entree. All the dishes were spiced divinely. I was very full by the end of the meal but thought that it would be a good idea to have the Himalayan Milk Dumplings for dessert. They were very sweet and satisfying. The staff found out that it was my birthday and brought the dessert in with a candle, had the restaurant sing happy birthday to me, and clashed nepalese symbols and played nepalese horns in my honour! I felt very special!

The staff also brought out 'singing bowls' and everyone in the restaurant had a turn at playing these gorgeous musical instruments. It made the dining a very social experience. I would go back here in a flash!

Located on the northern end of Melbourne Street, this cosy little restaurant offers all your Nepalese favourites. To remind us of where we are, the place is decorated with pictures of the Himalayas.
Delicious Please
A friend and I made our way to the Himalayan Kitchen on Melbourne Street a few nights ago to pop our Nepalese food cherry once and for all. It was fairly empty the night we went and for some reason it felt like we were being stared at by customers and staff as we walked in, like it's somehow weird for two Asian girls to be eating at a Nepalese restaurant? Reading the menu, it seemed that Nepalese flavours are pretty similar to Indian food. A lot of yoghurt, chilli, tomatoes, garlic and coriander are used to spice things up with a selection of chicken, lamb, seafood or vegetables. It was hard deciding a curry or a clay-oven cooked meat dish, but in the end the clay oven won. Pakora (Onion Fritters): $9.00 These were free! We were waiting for our food when the owner of the restaurant came over and placed these on our table. Unfortunately they weren't that tasty. I didn't realise it at the ti

It was good, spicy, flavoursome, delicious, tender and there was a variety of options on the menu. And to top it off, I really enjoyed the atmosphere, though I wouldn't go there with a big group for a birthday or anything because I'd want a bit more space.

The Himalayan Kitchen is something of a trek if you live in the southern suburbs, but without a shadow of a doubt, it was worth it and I would return in a heart beat.
