Review Steven Ter Horst Chocolatier - Adelaide

Hanmo Li
Desserts at @steventerhorstchocolatier! . Soft serve ice cream: vanilla flavour with honeycomb topping. The texture was more like a sorbet to be honest. Not so creamy. Still nice though! . Basque burnt cheesecake: original and chocolate flavours - they're good, but not quite as good as the ones from the actual Basque region. They were creamy, but not gooey and soft enough. . Iced chocolate: this one is a classic, and it's always good.

I went here with my sister for a tea and ended up with desserts. The passion that the man behind the counter had with his desserts was awesome, he made me want to try all of them. We had tried 4 of the cakes and every single one, was delicious and looked amazing. The basque cheesecake was really good, it had a texture that i have never experienced, sort of a creamy smooth, melt in the mouth, yummmm.

Chocolate is their signature products. However, the thing we love most in this place is baked cheese cake šŸ˜ The best bake cheese cake in the town. And it is always the cake we order when coming. We also tried the seasonal cake in the picture. It was so great as well! Love the place and its environment.

Favourite go to spot for a quick chocolate fix. Many hot chocolate flavours to try. Latest craze is the basque cheesecake. Generous serving and its so smooth and creamy. On weekends, they have other special flavours! They also sell other types of gateau. House made ice cream at limited times as well, gotta pop into store to see what's on.

Loving coming to this store which has a rustic vibe with interesting decor. They had a large variety of chocolates and desserts. I ordered a mocha and chocolates and there was nothing to fault. Also, the staff were happy to help and service was fast.

Local chocolatier with small selection of desserts and soft serve. Would recommend coming here for local boutique chocolates. The design of all the products look brilliant and I think would make great gifts and are Insta-worthy ;) Came to try the dessert cakes, we had the chocolate cloud and chocolate cheesecake. The former was light, soft and had great texture while the flavour of the cheesecake was more intense and complex, though perhaps a tad dry. Prices were decent with the chocolate cheesecake being the most expensive dessert at $10. While we liked the atmosphere and vibe of the place I personally didn't think the seating was super comfortable...Still, I would come back to give the other products a go :)

Our group went there for desert after having lunch in rundle street. We were very impressed with the variety of chocolates & cakes. The coffee was good as was the hot chocolate. A chocolate lovers dream come true.

Stopped in mid afternoon for a Mocha. When the hospital was around the corner I used to stop more frequently. Definitely try their caramel centred muffins. They are to die for. The mocha today was a dark liquid and probably quite balanced. Not as creamy as some mochas Iā€™ve had. Service was quick and friendly.

This little chocolate shop is my only go to place for the most wonderful chocolate experience. The best in Australia

Wow, thank you for the beautiful chocolates. I try to visit couverture chocolate shops wherever I go and your shop is now a favourite! Your chocolates, hot chocolate, and trio of desserts were all little tastes of heaven.
Dan Trotter
Quality here has gone really badly downhill since they moved from Unley. Coffee is so bad we didnā€™t finish it, thee cakes are dry and the desserts arenā€™t as good as they used to be. Save your money and go somewhere better close by.

The people of Adelaide are so fortunate to have you guys! I miss your chocolate shop so much. The taste, attention to detail and artistry are all amazing.

I love this place. Rich coffee and amazing gateaus, and the chocolates are to die for ā™”

You can't find a finer hot chocolate like their Spanish Hot Chocolate. Absolutely amazing individual cakes. Definitely a refined place to catch-up with a very good friend. So very worth the visitā™„

Chocolates to die for, friendly and informative service. Fantastic. I will return.

Some of the best chocolate creations I have ever tasted! Cannot recommend enough. The spanish spice hot chocolate was absolutely devine on a chilly Adel evening!

My wife and I do like our chocolates! .... and had ear-marked the store for a visit well in advance on a very brief visit from Brisbane. The chocolates were lovely and did not disappoint, nor did the Mascarpone Dream dessert! Staff were also helpful and very pleasant and friendly. Will highly recommend friends to visit when they are Adelaide!

I went in with my brother today for the first time and met the man himself. What a gentleman, a man who knows his chocolate and awesome hospitality making us feel warm and welcomed. Thank you so much. My brother treated me to the most exquisite and decadent chocolates which melted in my mouth and left the best taste on my pallet bursting flavors that were smooth and moorish. Thank you will visit again. āœŒ I recommend it to everyone.

Always yummy, staff are friendly, and thereā€™s so many tasty choices!!

The best way to end our night last night for a CanTeen's Dine and Dash fundraiser. a selection of delicious chocolate desserts with Tea and Coffee. Cant wait to go back and can highly recommend. Great staff too:)

Great spot on Rundle St, awesome service and the mint hot chocolate was the perfect remedy for a cold & rainy Tuesday night.

Who knew soft serve on a rainy winter day would taste so good
Alexandra Elrick
Service was perfect, great ambience, delicious array of temptations and those chosen melted in the mouth. What more can I say!

I really enjoyed the chilli hot chocolate. Four types of chilli! I asked for above medium spice and it was a bit too spicy for me, I will try medium next time. The other spices (cinnamon, cloves etc) add a really nice flavour and balance.
I found the iced chocolate a bit watery but the kids liked it.
Note that the map on Zomato is wrong. The shop is on Rundle St, whereas the map pin is around the corner on Frome St.
Gee
Seduced by the Zomato rating once again. We felt like an iced drink and traipsed a few blocks here. What a compete waste of time. Their version of an iced coffee and an iced honeycomb were just to add a small scoop of ice cream to the glass. There was no technique to this whatsoever. Iā€™d probably rate Starbucks higher and Iā€™m far from a fan.
Danelle Lim Yun
Came here to try their fruit de bois hot chocolate, trio of brownie, citrus curd tart and salted caramel tart, as well as the chocolate and nut slice. The desserts were really decadent, and was a tad too rich, but nevertheless still great! The hot choc was on point!
Sarahbabexxoo
Omg, incredible dessert place.
Their cakes and desserts are just divine! This place is a must try. Love the nuts about chocolate cake!

The hot chocolate is incredible sometimes and average others.
Asha
The desserts here are amazing ! I'll just say it.. I am in love with their nutty chocolate cake. I've ordered it three times for my dad's birthday ... Service on the other hand ... Sigh... Two out of the three times they messed up my order ... The first time the name plate (which you pay an extra 5 dollars for) was mispelt despite them having the right name on the paper message attached to the cake. The second time, the plate was cracked in pieces .. both times they refused to remove the plate charges until I spoke to the manager. Even then, there wasn't an apology. Like I said , if only their cakes were not that delicious...

Fantastic food. A little pricey for some but the taste and presentation coupled with the decor and atmosphere made it well worth it for me. Definitely will be coming back again.

So here we are now at steven ter horst chocolatier to have some mood booster before driving around the city. The place was quite at that time after lunch time, we straight away to the counter to order. I had mocha and salted caramel tart, my partner had hot chocolate and caramel dream. I like my salted caramel tart, the pastry crisp like a cookies and the caramel is delicious. By eating this I can skipped my breakfast and lunch. And for the caramel dream desert, geez that was one of the best desert I ever have, it's killa, it really nice. But I didn't like my coffee, for me it taste more acid. I don't know what made it so acid, either cinnamon roast coffee bean or maybe the espresso machine's calibration not on the right set. Overall we're pretty happy and enjoy our desert. And I love how the owner contribute to the community by putting a picture for sell on the wall.
Patrick Ellway
A great little cafe specializing in chocolate goods. The standard hot chocolate comes in quite a small cup upon first encounter, but is the most decadent and rich I have personally tasted, and is actually an appropriate size for this hot chocolate. The other variants like the mint or chilli hot chocolate also taste wonderful, providing subtle undertones that bring out the initial sweetness and darker notes of the hot chocolate. The atmosphere in the cafe is great, my first visit was to seek refuge from the rain, and I do not regret stepping into the cafe. The barista was friendly and patient, making us feel welcome. I would highly recommending trying this place out atleast once, and is a great place for personal outings or with a significant other.
Sally M'aynaise
I came here on a quiet Sunday night and we had ice choccy, citrus soda and a trio dessert. The dessert and drinks were amazing, the store has a simple cosy design and the owner is super friendly. Will definitely come back šŸ˜Š.

My boyfriend works here and he's pretty great so it's pretty great. But no seriously everything in the shop is completely delicious especially the "nuts about" cake!!!
Eatwithmyfoodsafari
We visited here as part of the Feast On Foot tour. It is located conveniently located on Rundle Street.

When you enter the chocolate and drink shop, your senses are heightened with aroma and sight of the chocolates in the cabinets. They also do drinks as well so our group had a mixture of pieces of chocolate as well as hot chocolates. I had the Hedgehog which was a milk chocolate with hazelnut praline and crepe crumbs. It was absolutely delicious that I returned later to buy some more chocolates! I also had the Hazelnut Praline Hot Chocolate to continue the Hazelnut theme. It was the perfect accompaniment to the chocolate as it was rich but had a great nutty flavour due to the paste in it.

The staff are friendly so do drop by to get some of these amazing chocolates!

We love this place so much , reason why we went here last Friday ! We were craving some carefully crafted chocolates and drinks ! I've tried the Jar of Goodness before which was a jar filled up with chocolate, ice cream, ganache and other heavenly stuff ! Tbh it's one of my personal favourites !! Also, Steven Ter hoist is one of the best dessert places in Adelaide! Good Job guys !

Scientific level of precision, ala Heston Blumenthal, like an art gallery. We described the person serving as a host rather than a sales person. A delectable experience. We are not dessert people but this was well worth the efffort. Highly recommended. Just to be picky, 0.5 off for uncomfortable chairs. Treat yourself and your partner and give this place a visit.
Karylle
With the cutest assortment of cakes in their cabinet, I always came here for the Nuts About You chocolate cake. That is until they bought out the Jar of Goodness (as pictured). It has vanilla and chocolate icecream, salted caramel teacake, salted caramel and ganache and it is amazing - all I could ask for! They're hot chocolate is a bit hit and miss though.
Kenji Maratimo
This place is insane!
OMG what an experience, I don't have hot chocolate very often, but when I went to this place and saw Lactose free milk and all the different types of chocolate, I had to have one, which became two...my family all had one.
The we had chocalate and more chocalates.
If you do or don't have a fetish for chocalates sweets or cakes, it doesn't matter, you MUST try this place....it's Insane, delightful and exquisite.
Let them make suggestions for you they did for us and we had a blast.

Steven ter Horst Chocolatertier is my favourite dessert place in Adelaide. Their cakes, drinks and chocolates are topnotch. I especially like their iced chocolate and their cakes are pure indulgence.

Very nicemint hot chocolate. Sadly forgot one of our desserts. Very busy. May benefit from an extra staff member. Very nice desserts. Thankyou
I Love Caramello Koalas
Disorganised and unapologetic
We ordered a special occasion dessert (husband's 40th) a months in advanced and when we went to pick it up the order had not been completed. He had the diary in front of me with the order and nothing!! The guy was unapologetic and unable to fix the situation. A business that carries out many pre orders that can't provide is a bit of a worry. Thankfully Heidelberg cakes were able to provide an already decorated cake and made a plaque on the spot.

Nice chocolate indulgence place at City, Rundle street. One of the best dessert place in Adelaide. Crowded street and parking could be a problem sometimes at city.

services - extremely friendly staffs. Very helpful in providing info about the desserts and love to talk to the customers. Fast services for both dine in and takeaway.

Food - beautiful and delicious tarts and cakes display at the glass cabinet. Couple of must try - citrus tart, salted caramel tart, opera cake and nuts about chocolate. The cakes are usually decent size, one serve per person. There are also cakes in bigger size for special occasion, often they have couple of cakes ready made for sale. To avoid disappoint, ring and order the cake you want. One of the most popular cake - chocolate truffle tart. It has been the favourite and has been serve by Steven ter Horst for years and years. It goes along really well with their berry coulis (it's to die for). Of course do not forget to try their chocolates. High quality of chocolate with different different types of flavour. You can even get a box as a gift. Elegant packaging available, just as the staffs.

Drinks - excellent coffee served. Nice aroma and strong. During summer best drink - iced latte without sugar syrup and whipped cream (personal choice). I'm yet to try their iced tea but I have heard numerous good reviews about their iced tea.

Definitely a nice little cafe to enjoy a cuppa, do some takeaway, get a special occasion cake or even just sweets catch up. Love this place heaps and I'll always be back for the same cake (never get bored).
Michelle
One of the best dessert cafes in Adelaide. Although the coffee and hot choc are bit pricier than usual. The ice tea is also a must try.

Been there many times. Really nice chocolates and cakes. I be bought a hazard choc cake with both strong hazard and choc flavor šŸ‘šŸ» pp there is also friendly and nice. They almost sold out everything at the night I went to.
Dumpling Love
Had the Nuts About Chocolate entremet. It was nice, but pales in comparison to others I've had elsewhere! That's definitely not to say this isn't a place you should pass up - I'm already planning my next trip there and what to eat! The chocolate is intense, and it tasted like a ferrero rocher overall. The sponge was moist enough, clearly a sign of it not being dried out in the chilled cabinet. Craving for chocolate and cake satisfied with one hit!
TresHungry
Tried the Lime Tart and the Mascarpone Dream. While the desserts were definitely yummy, they weren't mind-blowingly amazing. Maybe because I visited a bit late into the night, but the sponge in the Mascarpone Dream didn't taste particularly fresh. I still enjoyed it though, because the mousse and deliciously light and did well to offset some of the sweetness of the gooey caramel inside.

The Lime Tart tasted fresher, and was lovely and tangy. It's a good choice if you're after something lighter, refreshing and not so dense. A great summer dessert, I'd say!

I want to come back and try their other desserts, especially the Nuts About Chocolate, which seems to be a popular choice. The wagon wheels also look fantastic.
Kym Le
Their desserts are very inventive and have really good coffee. There was also this cute guy there who I may come back to see again if I can.
Fooddevil
It serves various types of hot chocolate and provides a dairy free option on the menu. The environment is nice and it is at a good spot. The desserts look very nice as well!
Famished
I adore this place.

Steven is so warm and passionate about his creations. Combine that with the talents of his patisserie chef partner, and you have a recipe for success.

On my most recent visit, I ordered an iced chocolate mint drink to beat the heat. Fortunate for me, I happened to be there at the time Steven was tweaking his teacake mixture and he offered a free sample. It was delicious, and I'm not even a huge cake fan! I've tried several of the tarts, truffles and beverages, but now I can enjoy a sponge as much as anything on the menu.
Sweet Teeth
Stevie T as we call it, is one of our favourite places when we are feeling like dessert.Ā We've been countless times and try for something new at each visit. Our favourites are the Honeycomb Vanilla drink and the Jar of Goodness or should it be Greatness? The latter is a jar filled with chocolate & vanilla icecream, salted caramel sauce and salted caramel tea cake and for those extra calories we always add the ganache.Ā The display fridge is full of beautifully and delicately decorated cakes which make for a tough decision.Ā Not to mention that coffee is consistently good here but there is also large range of caffeine-free hot and cold drinks.
Just recently I tried the Tutti Frutti Hedgehog chocolate and was sure I never tasted chocolate so good.Ā With a mixture of praline, pop rocks, honeycomb and raspberry these chocolates are as tasty as they are cute.

Damn I've just triggered a sugar craving...
Tiffany
simple interior design Cake and coffee shop located in rundle street. Love the varities of cakes they have. Ordered raspberry blossom and it was amazing, will definitely go back to try something else.
Sarah Oh
This is such a great place for dessert or even just to take a break from the rest of the shopping crowd. The chocolates and desserts are incredible, but I would have to say that my favourite menu item is the mint hot chocolate. It has got to be the best hot chocolate around.
JayTea & The Co-Pilot
Sneaking in our last chance for sweet treats before the end of the weekend the Co-Pilot and I decided to head into Steven ter Horst on Rundle St. I was lucky enough this year that my birthday cake was a large size of their famous ā€˜nuts about chocolateā€™ cake which was demolished before I knew it.Ā

Not only are they famous for their chocolate and cakes but their chocolate drinks are the best Adelaide has to offer. As it was a warm night the Co-Pilot and I decided to share an Iced Chocolate (dairy free) with a bonus scoop of ice cream. Wanting to try something we hadnā€™t had there before we settled for the Ardbeg Bliss and a couple of wagon wheel sized biscuits, the Disco and Rocket (what fun names btw!).
MGDL
My partner used to live very close to the old store in Unley, and we used to nearly go every week. We haven't been as regularly since the move to Rundle St (although it's right next to work for me), and it's probably got a little bit more chic/minimalistic and it feels a bit more "cold" compared to the more homely older store.Ā

Having said that, Steven Ter Horst is in my opinion the best dessert place in Adelaide. I don't think it's even close. They make the most amazing chocolates and cakes. My absolute favourite is the Nuts about Chocolate. It's super rich, with layers of cream, mousse, sponge, and nutty praline. The different textures and the richness are next level, you won't regret it (unless you have a nut allergy..). There was a period of time when they were covering it in milk chocolate, but now they've gone back to the "naked" version where you can see all the layers in their glory. I buy the large version for friend's birthdays and always get compliments for bringing such an awesome cake!Ā

I want to recommend so many things on their menu, from the hedgehog chocolate, the spanish hot chocolate, the salted caramel tart, and the home made strawberry soda in summer. Every thing they do is top quality. They even occasionally offer classes and chocolate tastings, where Steven and his partner talk about how they choose their chocolates and how chocolate is made, this was a great experience.Ā

I pretty much argue with anyone that says they don't like Steven Ter Horst, cause I think it just means they have had it properly! The only reason they lose half a mark, is that I feel like the old store had more character (I miss the leather couch with the trunk), but I'm probably just being picky now.
Julia Clarke
Steven Ter Horst (STH) Chocolatier is an absolute gem of South Australian chocolate artistry. (
Sarah
STH coffee is always perfect, his honeycomb milkshake is to die for (if you want an extreme sugar hit) his chocolates are made with passion and they have no flaws in looks or taste. His Eliza is my favourite chocolate, his homemade honeycomb chocolate block is a great small gift if you need something quality and the salted caramel in the jar also makes my top 3 products
Justin J. Stone
I understand when writing this review i must remain impartial but Steven betrayed me. Well He didn't exactly betray me personally but back when Steven ter Horst used to be on Unley Road it was my late night walk treat. That was over a year ago and they have since then moved to the city but the treats are still pretty amazing. I've never been in love with his interior design aesthetics but they are some of the best chocolates and desserts in town. It took me awhile to bring myself to enter his city store, personally he really should have been thinking more about me and should have kept two stores open but you know these chocolatiers, Its all about... I don't have an ending for this. Without having a menu I can't precisely rattle off all the different recipes but you'll find booze and pralines and nuts and all sorts of terms you've never heard of inside his chocolates. I still often instruct people I know who are leaving the city to grab me a salted caramel tart.

A little on the pricey side but the quality is evident with the first bite so unless you are a fat cat this will be a sometimes destination but a destination well worth it.
Ling Tan
Steven Ter Horst is easily one of my favourite dessert places. Everything is so delicate and precise, fantastic flavour combinations, of high quality and just all round indulgent. Very enjoyable for me, not only for his chocolate but also his desserts that never fail to amaze me. Though some desserts may be rich, I've never felt that heavy or sickly feeling from it.

If you love the taste, you can purchase chocolates and salted caramel pots to take home and enjoy at your own leisure
Rehany_maharani
Simplistic look. Marscapone is really nice. The mocchacino is a bit different though. Would be nice if they provide couch/sofa to make it more cozy.šŸ«šŸ°
Richard Hewin
Awesome desserts plenty to choose from so you can try something different each time you come. Don't think there has been a dessert i haven't enjoyed yet, mascapone dream cake is my favourite.
But I'm Hungry Now
Beautifully crafted desserts. The mascapone dream was a delicious dome filled with light mascapone and a thick layer of salted caramel on top of a cake base, all encased with a delicate layer of salted caramel. Good balance of textures and flavours. The man behind the counter was very friendly and it wasn't until I left that I realised I'd been served by Steven himself.
A Bite Of Adelaide

simply amazing and beautiful!
Definitely worth trying nice cakes and their hot chocolate. Better than all those chain stores
Staff are lovely and I am a tourist loved the lace straight away and the ambience
Biggiechee
Tried the Jar of Goodness. Would have preferred the cake to be warm and more ice cream in the jar. The staff was friendly amd provided their recommendations. The salted caramel cake with chocolate ganache was very delicious. Would come back again to try something else.
Sahar&Aurelio
Definitely one of my favorite dessert places in Adelaide.Ā Great atmosphere and the desserts are presented beautifully. The best dish (I have had over 3 times now) is by far the mascarpone dream, the flavors and texture is perfection.Ā The chocolate and truffles are all amazing as well, my favorite is the the honeycomb.Ā Make sure you also try the salted caramel sauce is that is a signature!
Adventures In Winterland
Adelaide has some fabulous independent chocolate stores, and Steven Ter Horst is one of the best. Craving something sweet after brunch, a friend and I dropped in to eye off the cakes on display. I was sorely tempted by the salted caramel tart, but seeing that they offered a ā€˜fruit de boisā€™ hot chocolate with strawberries, raspberries and blackberries, I was sold. They kindly made the mix dairy-free for me, using coconut milk and soy instead of milk. There was a short wait, but we sat comfortably at the large centre table, which was strewn with South Australian magazines. My mug came out and I was surprised at how thick the mix was ā€“ I adore true Italian hot chocolates and this was beautifully thick, apparently due to the berries. I ate it mostly with a spoon, to make sure I didnā€™t miss any. The dairy-free option in no way detracted from the flavour of the chocolate, which is an uncommon quality and reflects the care and talent that goes into their craft. The chocolate was rich, not sickly sweet, and given a delicate tartness from the berries. Well worth a visit.

Great Coffee, amazing chocolate and cakes. Get Luke to make you a coffee he knows his stuff and he's just a legend! Definitely a rad place to hangout!
Laura
The coffee here was really quite average - I don't know if it was just bad luck but I wouldn't be rushing back. The Unley Road shop was so much better.
TheWorldLovesAdelaide
Steven Ter Horst is a chocolate revelation on Rundle Street, creating world class chocolate with local Adelaide produce. The World Loves Adelaide visited Steven Ter Horst in their boutique store and spoke with Antonio, front of house. The business has been in operation for some 10 years but moving to Rundle Street, and their standout offerings, have put Steven Ter Horst in the spotlight. Chocolate Tastings Evenings and Masterclasses are regular highlights at this vibrant foodie hub. Adelaide has a fine European tradition and Steven Ter Horst exhibits the best of European style chocolates. The display cabinet reveals treature of the highest order with a brilliant selection of complex chocolate creations from the famous Salted caramel tart to bespoke gateaux, to delicate chocolates including "Jeanette" with raspberry puree and liqueur. Grab a couple of cakes as we did, and imbibe at the long table. The Salted caramel tart was rich but not overpowering. The base was delicate and the filling of the highest quality (not sickly sweet caramel but measured and defined). The thick layer of ganache on top was compelling. The drinks selection also impresses, with a range of hot and cold drinks including organic soft drinks and their signature hot chocolates. We enjoyed the Praline inspired hot chocolate (above), with hazelnut and even orange nuances. This "Jeanette" Ā with liqueur was a delight, with raspberry and chocolate being our favourite combination. The raspberry was not overly sweet and the chocolate was wonderfully balanced. Steven Ter Horst was trained by Paris masters as a chocolatier. Chantelle Giardina, Steven's partner, is also a patisserie master of chocolate and her creations adorn the cabinets and displays. Products for sale also include their compelling Salted caramel in a jar; great to spread over pancakes, ice cream, desserts and whatever takes your fancy.

Jury is out. I have had Stevens choc creations at the Wayville farmers market and loved them. World class indulgence. Thought I would check out his digs on Rundle street on a sunny midweek lunch break for a quick coffee and chocolate fix. Can't say I loved it. There was absolutely no vibe in the place. Felt dead and made me think it only comes alive at night as a dessert bar. The coffee was good but served lukewarm. Wonder if this is on purpose? The choc fix I chose was the little Whisky choc bite. Sad to say I just couldn't taste the whisky however much I closed my eyes and tried to taste it. The chocolate itself is great but I was left hanging for the taste of whisky that never arrived. Not sure about this place but willing to give it another try based on the multiple positive reviews and my memorable experiences of the farmers market chocolate taste explosions.

Phenomenal. Had family from interstate visit and i had to bring them to try the deliciousness of Steven her Horst cakes. We ordered 5 different cakes to takeaway (had a baby and pram thus could not stay long). We sampled the cakes and each one had a beautiful and unique taste, absolutely wonderful. Presentation of the cakes are superb and service was friendly. Will always return to Steven's!

Might be the Best place for a late night dessert. Really friendly staff serving excellent coffee and hot chocolate, beautiful cakes and outstanding chocolates. Home made sodas are good (although for some tastes might be a bit too strongly flavoured)

Setting is minimalist but flavour is set to maximum.

Only draw back - the dreaded jam jars to drink sodas from.

Certainly the best place on the Rundle Street strip for dessert. Possibly the best in Adelaide. Muratti is still the winner during the day, but at 10:30 on a Saturday? Don't hesitate to go here.
Karrie Tucker
ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE. This is my favourite place to get dessert.

The staff are super lovely, and i've never had something that's only been average.

I had a wicked addiction to their Christmas Pudding flavoured chocolates, i'll be looking forward to them again this year hopefully!
Claire Lillian
Steven ter Horst Chocolatier is something different. A unique and quality range of chocolates! I'm a lover of Haighs, but StHC chocolates and desserts are so different, and not really what I would consider competition against any other chocolatiers already established in Adelaide. The Rundle St store itself is sparse and lacking any shop warmth, but I think the quality of products overcomes that.
Tw
Excellent chocolate and cakes. This is a retrospective review. I know StH since they were on Unley Road and have been to their new store on Rundle Street a few times. Consistent quality and friendly service. The cakes and chocolate drinks are well-presented, delicious with distinctive elegant flavours, not too sweet. I would say they're quite competitive compared with Melbourne's popular names. The location on Rundle street is more accessible but finding free parking at night can be tricky. Would definitely come again.
Adampedron82
I like it but dont love it. I visited Steven Ter last week for coffee after eating at another restaurant on the same street, the decor is nice but very simple, it doesnt have the warmth that I expected from a dessert bar. The products are lovely and the service is ok, would not say outstanding. Overall id rather get take away and eat at home.

perhaps make it a little more welcoming, but overall I say its ok.
MrPurds
Grest. Mint ice tea was nicely weighted, not to rich but still great chocolate and mint flavours. salted chocolate tart was lovely. its all organic and hand made.

I think what matters most is the service you receive. The workers there were extremely welcoming and friendly! The food was decent
Geoffrey Edulan
Expectations met. Staff are friendly and service is great. The place is also clean and tidy. And ultimately the menu - excellent choices. Tried the Mascarpone Dream with my regular Hot Chocolate. Divine :)

Wow!. Just wow.

Yummy!. Tried the Earl Grey cake, and I would rate it 7.5/10. The taste was great, with hint of Earl Grey in each bite, however the texture of the top layer felt too gelatinous. Could have been better with a creamier top.

Salted caramel tart, 9/10. Super yummy full stop.

Fruit de bois - strawberry, raspberry, blackberry. It was the first time we came here to try chocolate stuff. We felt like to have a hot drink as we just finished our dinner. We then ordered two mixed berries hot chocolate drink. We waited for 10 minutes, the mixed berries hot chocolate drink arrived. The drink was over priced $6.5 for that small portion, the dried mixed berries was so crewy. I could only tasted the hot chocolate flavour not berries. Very disappointed!

I am drooling, just thinking about their desserts.... If the title hasn't explained my feelings about this wonderful place, then I don't know what will. Amazing, kind staff, wonderfully decadent desserts, and a great selection of drinks. You must try!

Great Coffee, a Little Slow But Worth the Wait. Expensive Chocolates, As Any Premier Product Should Be :-). Coffee and chocolates

Awesome!. This chocolatier is truly one of a kind.

Everything from the chocolate Easter eggs, to the truffles, to the salted caramel tart, to the coffees, is decadent and incredibly tasty.

If you're looking for a proper chocolatier with real ingredients and real taste, look no further. This is it!

I have been going back regularly!

If I wanted soda stream I would have stayed home.. Hot chocolate was good... but why are you bothering with "house made sodas" if you're using a soda stream machine?

I could have done that at home.. and $7.5 !!

Sweet tooth. The Hazelnut Heaven was nice; a cosy place for cakes and chocolates.

The perfection . Steven of.... The perfection .
Steven offers an incredible quality!
Fresh and done perfectly !
Thank you!

Booked a table when we got there no one even bothered to approach us so we just sat at the table that said "reserved".... completely overpriced!! Long wait for our cakes and coffees... Surely it doesn't take 40minutes to our a piece of cake on a plate. Don't think we will be returning. Very average!
Hung Sum
Umm hello?!. We paid for our cakes and sat down. All the waiter had to do was just put it on a plate and give it to us right? Well ah no. He served another table while carrying our plate and then absentmindedly just walked back to the counter instead of to us. We waited another 10 min, but he had totally forgotten. It was near closing time so not much customers, clearly you can see that this table is just sitting here and not eating. Wouldve left but we already paid.

Recently moved from Unley, Steven ter Horst has always been on my to try list but haven't got around to do so until now.

At a more convenient location, we tried their cakes which were small but don't be fooled, full of decadence. Abit on the pricier side, but to good to resist!

Their chocolates are also very well done and comparable to Koko Black. I will definitely come back be it for a drink or dessert! Keep up the good work!! :)

Really good, fairly priced desserts. Hot chocolate was pretty good too.

Pete. First time here at the new store on Rundle St, one would Amazing! i dont mind paying more when the chocolate and desserts are Perfect and all made by the owners.
They have delivered a dessert bar that is different to the rest of them.

Food: 8.5/10
Ambience: 7.5/10 (needs to be a little bit quicker, and needs to pay jazzy lounge music)
Price: 8.5/10 (dont mind paying more when its amazing!)
Service: 9/10 (friendly staff who didnt just serve me, but made a short conversation that really made me feel welcome.)

Definately go back, I could have bought everything in there! Great for an afternoon delight ;) or a late night dessert with friends, and your partner if you've been with them for a while. For new couples or dates, Elephant walk is probs a more cosy place to go to get to know eachother.

Went there for coffee & dessert last night (Tue). Had chilli hot chocolate & salted caramel tart. Loved the chilli hot chocolate, and could definitely taste the heat. Yum. Salted caramel tart was fudgy and rich. My husband prefers milky hot chocolate, so he didn't like the one here as much. So if you like thick Italian rich hot chocolate, this is definitely the place to go.

The best place for coffee and cake!. The BEST gĆ¢teaux & coffee - the salty caramel tarts & chocolates are so divine!

Lovely staff and probably the best hot chocolate in Adelaide, a hard title to win, very please with my chocolate cloud ~~ definitely coming back! ćƒ½(^怂^)

Came to steven ter horst chocolatier for a late dessert worst decision I have made. I absolutely love my desserts and after reading the reviews I thought I would come here, the chocolate cloud was so rich and sickening I hate one bite, the hot chocolate had the worst taste to it absolutely disgusting!!! I've had better hot chocolate out of the vending machine coffee makers! The staff also did not care when I complained.
Jonsen Tan
Yum!. Was there yesterday to try they chocolate! Awesome! Nice coffee and the chocolate cloud is just great. Very nice place to relax a bit in noon or tea time. Thanks to yesterday friendly waiter, I have drop my wallet on the sofa and he just run our chase after me, really appreciated!

Only the best will do!. I have eaten desserts and chocolate from all different establishments, but only if they are high end as Im not usually a sweet tooth. But this place I go back to again and again, especially for the salted caramel tart! Best ever. The quality is exceptional and everything they make and sell is worth every yummy cent! Keep up the beautiful work.

Can't wait to go back!. Love this place, the chocolate is so worth it and the desserts keep improving by the month!

Decadent, rich desserts to quieten any sweet tooth. I've been eyeing out this Chocolatier for quite some time, so when the night came for me and a friend to catch up over coffee and cake, I quickly suggested this place. And I must say, the experience was amazing!

We went there on a Sat night, about 9pm, the place was full, but we were lucky to score a table after a group of people had just left. The selection of desserts available all looked amazing, my friend and I chose to try their 'Nuts about chocolate (?)' cake and the Salted Caramel tart. Oh my, I can honestly say, the best dessert I've had so far! The nuts about chocolate cake is amazing!! The different layers of chocolate, the cream, the nuts, all work perfectly together, a must try! The salted caramel tart was equally as good, but a bit too rich, but still enjoyable, a nice layer of caramel and chocolate oozing together. I also tried one of their fine chocolates (the hedgehog one) and it was very delicious, anyone who is a lover of dark chocolate will love this, my friend also tried their lemon macaroon, it was light and tasty. I ordered a mint tea to have with the desserts, and lucky I did as my friend ordered their hot chocolate and could not finish it on top of the desserts. The hot chocolate was beautiful, thick and rich but very filling, and somewhat bitter (as true chocolate should be), so if you order dessert, don't order the hot chocolate, it's too much.

I will be back to try their other desserts, and also want to take part in their 'around the world chocolate' night, check out their facebook page for this.

In all, a definite dessert winner for me!
Crogga
What a great find!. Beautiful cakes, deserts & Chocolates!

We had the chocolate cloud and the lemon cloud, both were fantastic!

Hot chocolates were abit too rich for our likings but we will be back!

This is the place to be on a cold night, it is only a small shop located on Unley Road, very easy to miss.
Very simple but full of sophisticated chocolates. A variety of beautiful cakes to choose from. Definitely a must try.

Guys, seriously, this place is the place to go for cake& chocolate .good price& good quality . Take away is the best, sitting inside isn't really comfortable.
Onegreedygirl
Fab coffee, like an adelaide version of koko black. This is a cute, if not somewhat pretentious place. But then if you're going to be pretentious about something, it might as well be chocolate.

The style of the chocolates for sale reminds me of Melbourne's Koko Black with slabs of chocolate with dried fruits and nuts rustically embedded in them.

The coffee was amazing, as was the chocolate coated cinnamon biscuit which was just the right blend of buttery and crunchy.

Worth dropping in while you're on Unley Road.

Finest Chocolate in Adelaide!. Absolutely love this shop. The masters Steven and Chantelle are such passionate people! I'm a dark chocolate lover and can't believe there's a shop in Adelaide that specializes in creating dark chocolates! The variety is excellent, made so finely and the Fleur de Sel is too good. Chantelle, a young pastry chef is behind all the amazing petit gateaus and macarons. I love their Dark Chocolate Macarons, great for me as I love desserts but not overly sweet ones. I'm in love with the Salted Caramel Pot! My friends love the coffess but i'm not a coffee drinker, however they have an excellent tea selection & summer specials. The shop is small so it's not noisy and rather private, but downside is if you want to drop in on Friday / Saturday night adhoc manner, you might not have a seat, so remember to call in & book a table!

AMAZING. Coffees are average, chocolates are brilliant! loved the green tea and earl grey ones, also the chocolate and raspberry macaroons are mouth watering. will be back!
also the citrus deserts are incredible!

Had our first experience there today and it was amazing. Chocolate salted caramel tart and chocolate salted truffles were amazing. Good coffee too!

Wow. (Have never actually eaten in but....) a colleague bought me a birthday cake from here.. at least she called it a cake? It was something more along the lines of a hazelnut-mousse-fudge-chocolate-delicious-cream-amazing-ganache. Mind-blowing
Ross Roberts-Thomson
Best hot chocolate in Adelaide. We had the Lemon Lust which was absolutely delicious! We'll be coming back here.

Let's appreciate true quality. An artist of fine precision and dedication to detail has empowered ter Horst to comfortably claim to be the best chocolatier in South Australia. Parking is a bit of a problem, but if you park in the Metro car park across the road you will be fine. Since Chocolate World in Adelaide Arcade changed owners a few years ago (and now has closed..) there hasnt been anywhere for me to go and speak to someone who understands chocolate. The hand crafted chocolates are works of art. I really hope Adelaide supports this store as a wonderful world of chocolate goodness exists beyond Lindt from the supermarket and the overly burnt sweetness of Haighs.
Ruby
I liked this place, the staff were lovely even though we arrived 10 minutes before closing time they even stayed open while we finished our desserts, great service like that keeps me going back. The salted caramel tart phenomenal, the marscapone dream is average as is the chocolate cloud, lacking in richness and intensity... The hot chocolate is AMAZING! Best in town, I recommend this place but it can be a bit sterile to actually dine in. Go though, definitely worth trying.

Absurd excuse - lukewarm hot chocolate in a cold winter night. Went there to get a hot chocolate and dessert with husband tonight and waited for 20 mins for one hot chocolate. They were quite busy so it was understandable. The dessert is quite pricey...it went up around $2/ $3 comparing when we came here 6 months ago.

And then the barista served me a lukewarm hot chocolate...so I just nicely asked the lady to heat it up for me in the microwave for 10 seconds as I seriously didn't like it. Later a guy, I believe is the chocolatier, came to warm us they served the hot chocolate in the right temperature co's the chocolate itself will produce a "burning" taste if the temperature of the milk gets too high as they used the real chocolate not chocolate powder.

The temperature of the hot chocolate is around 50 - 50c according my husband who is a barista himself for years. The finally heat up the hot chocolate for us and it tasted a lot better.

I do understand if your barista is under-trained sometime you do defend for your own staff, but I would rather spending more time to provide more training than telling your customer such an absurd excuse. I am not a chocolate expert but I have common sense so please don't treat your customers like an idiot.

An art gallery of dessert.. Food is art. Art is food. At least, in my humble opinion, what makes food so tantalising is the fact that it causes severe salivation when your eyes rest upon it before you've even had the opportunity to put a sliver of anything into your mouth.

A visit to Steven ter Horst was borne out of severe necessity after a heavy dinner - firstly, it was late. Secondly, our tastebuds were demanding for dessert. Now.

It was a short car ride away and we had no idea what to expect at 9.30pm at night on a Wednesday.

Row upon row of retail shops, dark and empty as we passed, before being hit by a welcoming beacon of glowing light and a bright pop of colour set upon a single, solitary table by the window, two chairs, and very adorably, a water bowl by the side to quench the thirst of the odd furry guest.

The glass window shop front had a beautiful, translucent floral pattern reminiscent of a Japanese bonsai tree, until you realise your eyes may be playing tricks on you when the patterns seem to transform into a bevy of maidens with flowing hair. Interesting.

Your gaze averts past the maidens as you take in the deep, woody browns of the interior, framed by bare, white wall that is veiled in a honey tone of the ambient lighting.

A brown couch, a suitcase coffee table and the iconic arc floor lamp invites you in to your own personal living room space.

A long, long glass display of all varieties of chocolate sits neatly parallel to wall, two or three small tables and chairs against the other opposite side, all lead up to the front counter.

It felt like a cross between a rustic art gallery with overtones of a minimalist's touch. Paired with the fact that my companion and I were alone in this art gallery, it felt like an exclusive viewing of a private art collection.

Onward to the chocolate. A young lady popped out of the open kitchen area. We asked her if the place was usually this empty - in fact every restaurant and cafe we had visited in Adelaide had been just absolutely empty, we felt like we were in the Twilight Zone.

She laughed and asked us straightaway if we were out-of-towners and we made idle chat for a bit before settling down to serious business.

We were recommended the Marscapone dream petit gateau and I stubbornly pointed towards the Chocolate Cloud because it looked like a much larger version of all the teeny tiny chocolate shapes in the glass display. Along with those went two obligatory coffees to wash them down.

My companion cast me a look of what I can only describe as bewildered resignation at my apparent "unfoodie" behaviour.

We settled for the table outside and spotted people eating at Sushi Train on the opposite side of the road. Now I love sushi and wished there were a Sushi Train in Melbourne but at that point the people there looked very sad indeed.

The sweet treats arrived, and we both took a small bite of each to sample. It was divine.

For something to taste so good even on a stomach of 98% full capacity was amazing.

The Marscapone dream petit gateau was a deep custard flaked with a narrow ring of crunchy, slightly salty burnt caramel bits coating the base, lending a satisfying textural experience to the contrast of silken sweetness of the 'custard' foundation.

The Chocolate Cloud was rich, dark chocolate which swirled and literally vanished like a misty cloud from the heat off your tongue, caged by snap-worthy chocolate squares.

The coffee tasted thin, bland and bitter in comparison, possibly from the overdose of sweetness of the dessert, but then again good coffee doesn't normally taste that bad even when paired with dessert.

I wasn't satisfied with the coffee but the dessert was absolutely amazing. If it weren't for my distended belly by that time I would have frogmarched my companion to the display counter and made him buy me a box of chocolates (you never know what you're gonna get) at gunpoint if need be, for the trip back to Melbourne.

A place worthy of bringing friends, family or anyone visiting to indulge in some serious quality chocolate.
Coffee And Food Enthusiast.
Cosy place, but I would still recommend Au Matin Calme if you won't the best dessert in town.
Hungry Hippo
The Marscapone Dream is the best dessert I have ever eaten. Trying other desserts at this place is now going to be a problem now since I will never get sick of this. The only downside was the hot chocolate. Other than that highly recommend!

Good Stuff !. Steven Ter Horst is making me fat ! i cannot stay away from his offerings of chocolates and desserts. They are so good ! The quality is excellent and the price reasonable.
Mashedpotato
Why is it not more popular?. I dont understand why people are not lining up to get in here like they do eggless. The creations are beautiful, and so reasonably priced, although I think last year they were $1 cheaper. I love the lemon lust, but they are all good. If you like chocolate this is the place for you. This is the only place that I need to ask for for milk in both the iced and hot chocolate as they make it too strong. But that is a plus.
Homerofbrisbane
Velvet smooth!. We had the Hazelnut Heaven and it was aptly named because that was what we got! The chocolate coating on the outside was very smooth and we were thoroughly impressed. It's a bit pricey but the quality was definitely there to match it. We will be back again and again.

Love Love Love!!!. This my new favourite place!!! I had the Chocolate salted caramel tart and loved it. The hazelnut hot chocolate was to die for too. I will be trying the gorgeous individual chocolates next time. I had my eye on a few.

Good coffee. I had a bit of trouble looking for a park, with the local school around the corner, then disappointed that there were no salted caramel, my cold winter afternoon was looking pretty gloomy. Thank goodness for their good coffee, service and the Hazelnut gateaux was delicious :) Although a bit far for me, will pop in when i'm in the area next.

Immaculate chocolates and knock your socks off chilli hot chocolate. So so chai latte. I'm in love.

Yum. Great food, great coffee, atmosphere inside is lacking a bit, but all in all a great place for a hot chocolate. Haven't tried their chocolates yet but will next time!

Best chocolate in Australia that I've tried. When I went down Unley road (around April 15th) I went past a nice looking little shop with the name Steven ter Horst chocolatier on top and I loved it all. The shop has the most delicious chocolates I've ever tried, even their cakes are tasty (my favourite on is the lemon lust, I can still taste it the lemon when I think about it). My favourite chocolates that I've tried are: ?Stephanie, Elouise and the hedgehog. The shop has nice staff members who always look happy, they also have delicious hot chocolates (which comes in different verieties) and nice coffees.
Foodiequeen11
I wasn't as impressed as I thought I would be. It's pretty nice, a bit of a sterile fit out for me and, the chocolate was nice but, for us a bit pricey. Good hot chocolate, but we've had better macarons in the city. I didn't get into it as much as I thought I would by reading the other reviews....

Pure Heaven! Everytime I visit I have excellent service from Steven ter Horst's staff & a friendly smile from the man himself. The chocolate delights are numerous, the variety of teas, creamy rich real hot chocolate, the fantastically prepared coffee - and all are literally second to none in the world!
Dianne Longley
Fantastic and delicious. I have visited Steven's chocolates on numerous occasions and each time the experience was amazing. I am having a birthday celebration soon, and I will be serving my friends the chocolate tart which is so beautiful, rich and chocolatey, without being too sweet. Having a chocolate treat and a coffee at the shop is also a wonderful experience.
Dianne

Sheer Indulgent Decadence. Truffles, chocolate bars, chocolate tarts, griottine, Macarons, salted caramel chocolate mousse, great coffee, fabulous hot chocolate..I can go on and on.
A lovely shop with great ambience and beautiful use of reclaimed timber for tabletops looks great.
I try to restrict my visits to once a month as too often and the waistline may threaten to explode.

Steven Ter Horst is a household name to most Adelaide-siders, correction, or maybe to most of them with an uncannily sweet tooth. Located along the main stretch on Rundle Street, it's opening hours draw the late night crowds in with the promise of that naughty treat just before bedtime. I happened to be one of the willing victims. With a spread of desserts, entremets and chocolate bars; there are many ooohs and aahs that follow upon threading into the shop. Made using bespoke couvertures hailing from France and Belgium, Steven ter horst aims to create something truly special with the slight bolstering of these premium goods. The Iced Vanilla and Honeycomb was an umbrian treat. Perfumed with the smoky richness of honeycomb, this drink is definitely suited for those looking at achieving some sort of hyper-active state after dark. We also had the Nuts about Chocolate , an elegant slice comprising of a chocolate and almond base, hazelnut dacquoise, chocolate ganache and milk chocolate ch

I live in Sydney. Steven ter Horst Chocolatier is in Adelaide. Iā€™ve never been to Adelaide before. How on earth did I hear about or end up trying a box of chocolates from Steven ter Horst Chocolatier? A work colleague from Melbourne caught up with me in Sydney and mentioned he went to the Adelaide Food and Wine Festival, noting that Steven ter Horst Chocolatier were some of the finest chocolates heā€™s tried. Originally I thought too bad theyā€™re in Adelaide - I guess I wonā€™t be trying them anytime soon. However, I had my usual surge of curiosity, acted upon it, googled them and found Steven ter Horst Chocolatierā€™s website. The website said ā€œAustralia Wide Delivery Coming Soon!ā€. I sent them an email and I was in luck. New Australia wide delivery of Steven ter Horst Chocolatier was launched and I probably am one of the first Sydneysiders to have Steven ter Horst Chocolatier chocolates delivered to me in the post. How did the chocolates arrive? In a padded Australia Post bag. The chocolate

Steven ter Horst's is another dessert cafe that has opened it's new and only location on Rundle Street. This small and comfy dessert cafe brings you the most organic and amazing chocolates.Ā During our visit we decided on two different types of cakes in the ' Mascarpone Dream ' Ā and ' Chocolate Cloud '. The small cakes were very nice. We also ordered a few mini chocolate balls, the stand out was the ' SaltedĀ Caramel '.Ā Nevertheless, the best thing on the menu by far are their inventive hot chocolates. All made by dark chocolate pieces with a hit of a certain flavours. In this case we ordered the ' Coconut Hot Chocolate ' it was just amazing.Ā For the great customer service and their amazing hot chocolates i rate this dessert cafe above average 6.5 out of 10 stars

When other stores source their products from this place, you know itā€™s good! Aiming for a sugar high, we ordered two desserts, a beverage and one of their hand made chocolates.

For weeks and weeks now (months, probably), my best friend has been raving about the salted caramel tart at Steven Ter Horst and how ridiculous it is that I haven't tried it.

Another great dessert experience at Steven ter Horst, but honestly not surprising given this local chocolatier is one of the shining stars of high quality, made with passion dessert/chocolate in Adelaide.
Delicious Please
There is chocolate, and then there is chocolate . Ā One step into Steven Ter Horst and you know they are the latter. Ā Situated in between Yiros House and Aurum on Rundle Street, their sleek black and white interior and carefully set out dessert displays really set them apart from your average choccy shop. They have a selection of ready-made desserts in their glass display and a huge range of drinks to choose from. Ā I love the fact that they have a variety of cold drinks which aren't just iced chocolate - their iced teas are amazing - and that they have a few different kinds of hot chocolate for the adventurous. Hot Chocolate: Hazelnut Praline & Mint In terms of colour, there isn't much difference. Ā Chocolate is chocolate-coloured. Ā But the taste is so Ā different. Ā The hazelnut is extremely rich, almost to the point of over-sweet, although for me it hovers just below that line. Ā There's a strong nut flavour to it and it's almost like drinking liquid Ferrero Rochers. Ā The mint is just as

Theyā€™ve moved to a trendy shopfront down the East End, and theyā€™re serving delicious chocolates, desserts and drinks. Getting a chocolatey dessert and sweet milky drink was too much for meĀ - their iced teas are also recommended. The food is good quality but Iā€™m not sure if I was overly impressed with my drink. Salted chocolate caramel tart & honeycomb vanilla milkshake The tart was rich and decadent ā€“ the drink was sweet and very liquid. It didnā€™t have enough honeycomb chunks and I would have liked a thicker consistency. View Larger Map Tagged: Adelaide , Chocolate , east end

Everyone should go for Steven ter Horst Chocolatier's chocolate tasting at least once in your lifetime! This cost of this tasting was $15, which included a cup of coffee/tea/hot chocolate, tasting platter consisting of Nuts about Chocolate and Salted Caramel Tart as well as a hand crafted chocolate of own choice. It was very worth it especially for a chocolate lover like me!

What better way to spend an after birthday dinner than with delicious desserts! I was walking down Rundle Street when we decided that we would get some nice takeaway desserts. I have previously been to Steven Ter Horst Chocolatier when they were previously on Unley Road, but have not been back to them since they moved to Rundle Street. Upon entry, you are welcomed by their impeccably presented desserts so when deciding what to order, I could not decide on one, instead ordering three!

I chose this place because of the many praises given to it by not only other food blogs, but also university friends, one of whom recommended I try the Hazelnut Heaven...

Rose you were so pretty with your elegantly topped wisp of white chocolate and rose petal encased in a crumbly shortbread pastry. Biting into the almond sponge bottom, red berry jelly and dollops of light rose mousse all I could taste was strawberry jam. Sadly Iā€™ve never been a big jam fan. Rose is one of my favourite flavours (even though itā€™s the flavour everyone I know hates ha) so I was a bit sad that I couldnā€™t taste much of it.

Simple and minimalistic. Was the first thing that popped into my mind when I walked into Steven ter Horst Chocolatier. Okay, maybe not. The first thing was ā€˜Whoaā€™ then simple & minimalistic. There were about 3 tables in the shop and a sofa by the window for customers to enjoy their chocolate/desserts in their shop.
10pm on a saturday night and craving for some decadent sweets. Right. I know a little place on Rundle Street that can fix me up pretty easily;) I am not sure if customers are keen for Steven ter Horst to relocate to the city area as opposed to Unley Road but I am very pleased because now I can head to the movies/ grab a lunch or dinner and head here for dessert or to chill with friends. It's a winning combo, me thinks.

I have probably been here less than 8 times throughout my stay in Adelaide (blogged about a couple of these trips here and here) and gotta admit that my sweet-binge experience just keeps getting better each time! Each piece of cake or tart has evolved aesthetically, which obviously, makes it harder for me to select just one piece

I like chocolate, no doubt about that. But I especially like chocolate on chilly, cold days because it's just warming for the soul. I used to love white chocolate but as I grew older, I developed an affection for the more intense flavoured dark chocolate pieces. At Steven Ter Horst, I am spoilt with choices. Just too many to choose from!!

I first came across Steven Ter Horst's chocolates at the Farmer's Market (held every Sunday). I had heard about this place and it's wondrous desserts but it did take me a little while to get there. Steven Ter Horst Chocolatier is situated on Unley Road and one sunny Sunday afternoon while we were out and about I decided to call in on the way home. It was about 3pm when we stepped into this well decorated place with a very organic cosy feel to be greeted by a tempting display of chocolates, cakes and tarts. On the left hand wall as you walk in there's a shelf set into the wall displaying amazing blends of tea available. We went at a quiet time so seats were plenty and we chose to lounge on the sofa in the window watching the world go by. There is however only about 12 to 14 seats. As I walked up to the counter a vintage telephone on the wall caught my eye. What a lovely touch I thought. Mr. Foodie went straight for hot chocolate while I contemplated my tea blend selection. Eventually I chose their White ginger pear tea .Ā If you look hard enough there's Steven right there! White

Steven ter Horst clearly has a great deal of love and respect for chocolate and his shop is filled with proof that he has done his chocolate homework. The small and beautifully decorative chocolates in the glass case are perfect for boxing up as a gift or to take home for later.

Back to my issue of what to get: I finally settled with this beautiful lemon dessert to curb the lemon tart craving. Iā€™m calling it a lemon dessert because I have no idea anymore what it was called. Notes, what are they? What do you mean I can write in them.

Steven ter Horst has moved his shop to Rundle Street from his previous location on Unley Road. The new location will be very popular but will also put in him competition with Cocolat, Chocolateria san Churro, The Birdcage and the Chocolate Bean. Steven ter Horst however has the chocolate creations to compete in this neighbourhood.
