Review Etica - Adelaide

Alyssa
Honestly surprised at how many 5 stars this place has. Had the $38 menu with starter and unlimited pizzas, the herb bread wasn’t great but the meats and cheer were nice as a starter. Pizzas came out in a reasonable time but they didn’t ask if we wanted more and just cleared everyone’s plates. Pizzas were wet in the middle- to the point that you had to eat it with a knife and fork. Wine list was expensive but $20 corkage was reasonable. Probably wouldn’t return.

Etica! One of my favorite spots to visit for a pizza/pasta meal in Adelaide. I’ve never left disappointed no matter what I’ve ordered. The little wine list is outstanding, the setting is dark and moody but most of all the service and hospitality is incredible. You get the feeling you are having dinner at someone’s house which is exactly what you want at an Italian restaurant.

Such a cute pizza restaurant, definitely book ahead. Pizza chef was amazing to watch and created delicious pizza. They also serve pasta dishes and starters but I only saw pizza! Priced for freshness and taste. Plenty of parking and bathrooms avaliable. It is a little hard to find so keep an eye out for the sign. Enjoy good pizza

We had a pleasant evening at Etica, with a prime position to watch the pizza maker work his magic! Friendly service and delicious food, an overall very nice time at Etica

Warning: BRING YOUR APPETITE! So full 🥴 Food is super tasty and authentic. Favourite dish has to be the pizza or the housemade beetroot pasta with pork sausage 😍❤ A great mix of flavours washed down with a nice cold Italian brew and the company of my lovely special lady.

Worst place ever, felt abused!!! Not recommended at all. We book a table at 7pm for 8 pp and make us wait for another 25 min. We order all you can eat on Pizza and they 1:30 hrs to be serve with 2 pizzas and 2 antipasto plates. We were asking for more and they told us that they only have one oven and we have to wait. We decided to leave from the restaurant because we were hungry and ask for the bill of what we consume in that moment. They charge us the full amount of of the all you can eat price !!!! We refuse paying the full amount for only 2 Pizzas, so the waitress instead of apologizing for the delay or the amount, she was turning all over on us, saying they only have 1 oven, 1 Chef. Then she asked how much you guys wanna pay? We answer we wanna pay fairly what we eat. After she came with 3 different bills with 3 different amounts and start trying to push us to pay the full amount of the all you can eat price ( means $300 for 2 pizzas and 2 antipasto platters) No apologies at all!!!! Is was all our fault, how good is that? Guys don’t waist your time and money cuz the food is not that great too!!

Had a terrible experience in this place! We were here for a celebration and had a booking in advance so the restaurant should have been well prepared of their customer turnout. But what happened was we had to wait 15mins to be seated and 2 hours for antipasti and 2 serves of pizza. I will never come back to this place ever again.

My first and the only worst experience in Australia even all around the planet. I didn't want to write bad review, but reading all the previous comments, they had the same bad behaviour. The problem is the service all you can eat, two hours waiting for two pizzas, we were celebrating and this ruin the celebration. They didn't apologize and they pretended to charge as 38aud per 8 each person and we don't ate 2 pizzas. I was looking many couple were coming and they ate and leave each one a pizza, and we will keep waiting.

Italian Restaurant with really good traditional Italian pizza. Real thin traditional crust-just the way it's done in Italy with range of flavours. Portion sizes of pasta is really small-I wouldn't get pasta again. Great service and dinner was fantastic. Recommend this place.

Absolutely amazing Napoli style pizza using all the proper ingredients. Pizza is beautiful and highly recommend the arancini also. Staff are great too. Will definitely be back!

Visited on our trip to Adelaide from Melbourne after experiencing A LOT of disappointing pizza on our holiday so far. Was so impressed with the pizza Etica and only disappointed that we didn’t find it sooner, we would have come here to eat every night. Food was exceptional and service was absolutely amazing. Will be back for sure.

I've spent a lot of time in Naples and eaten a hell of a lot of authentic pizza. Etica is the place to go if you want something similar. I stumbled upon this place one night and we were welcomed in, drenched from the rain.<br/>We were offered a place viewing the kitchen and were poured some great wine. If Dominos is what you consider pizza, you'll be in for a shock. But, for everyone else, the experience will be great.

Busy little place tucked away in a quiet street. Because they don't take reservations we had to wait for a table when we rocked up- although this is a good sign of awesome food. Ended up getting take away pizza which was delicious, but will be back!

I wish i could give a lower score... how can you even claim to be ethical when you purchased a real cow to killed and hung from your ceiling? You paid for its life to be ended for 'decoration' plus you sell meat and dairy in your restaurant.... HOW IS THIS ETHICAL??? <br/>Its absolutely disgusting and disturbing - how can you call this an art piece?!?<br/>I wouldn't even enter this building let alone dine in it if you offered me all the money in the world.<br/>You guys are sick!!! <br/>Take down the cow!!!!

Food; I like the concept of this pizza bar, pizza by the slice (or more like weight) and cooked up within 5 mins from order. I've had about 3 visits over about 6 mths, this time with a margarita pizza. The ingredients are fresh and I like the dough. Though to be picky my personal preference is for thinner bases. <br/><br/>Ambience; it's pretty chic inside, having been designed by architects. Jazz music is tuned up, it's like a bar. I like the playlist, with a bit of GoGo Penguin. <br/><br/>Service; very consistent, all 3 visits very fast, friendly, welcoming. The strong passion they have for their business really comes across. <br/><br/>There are many pizza joints but none like this . It's very unique, it's a winner. <br/>

Amazing ambience and the best tasting authentic pizza i’ve had since.... forever. The pizza base sauce tasted exactly like nonnas🙌 Definitely will be coming back to try the risotto.

I could not fault Etica at all. The food, the service and the ethos are 11/10. Local friends took my partner and I there while visiting from Melbourne a few months ago. Those friends return again and again and I will too. This restaurant and experience is world-class, in sleepy Adelaide (sleepy if you're not looking in the right places). The grief this restaurant is currently receiving for attempting to evoke discourse and engage the community in a conversation that needs to be had has spurred me to finally write this review. <br/>This restaurant cares about serving you amazing local thoughtful and thought-through food and you can taste just how much this means to those who work there. Slow food, the kind served at Etica is good for you and good for the world. Thank you Etica

Expensive and ordinary. Do yourself a favor and give this place a miss. Ethical pizzeria - this certainly is not. The pizza wasn't the worst I've eaten - but it wasn't far off that mark. And the cow - its just bad taste.
Lois Scott
disgusting. a real dead cow hanging from the ceiling....its disrespectful. such a gentle creature who wanted to live to be brutally slaughtered for some decoration. I feel sorry for the person who owns this restaurant, must have no heart. what a joke

Oh Melissa I am so so sorry you were lovely but god damn it I left and couldn't help but tell everyone I know for the next week just how horrible shit and dissatisfied I felt after dining at Etica. I took my girl along for a night out. Shockingly long wait...No explanation.. Soggy pizza ... Ripped off prices... .zero ingredients on pizza.....And hurried out the door like noone's business. Please please fire Federico or get his brother Johnny to bang out some real pizzas. Oh man cocaine is one hell of a drug Federico.

My Adelaide pizza crawl has lead me to this little pizza bar down Gilles street. My favourite thing; the name! Etica, in Italian, means "ethical"! All produce used here is from ethical and sustainable sources. 👍<br/><br/>I sat down at my table and smells of fresh dough and soft cheese melting in the wood fired oven entered my nose! I was excited. <br/><br/>Pizza at Etica is traditional and tasty. Your mouth will find itself chewing through soft and mouth watering dough and simple but delicious toppings including three cheese, Margherita and porchetta. What more can i say but this place is simple and effective! <br/><br/>Highly recommended for a good ethical traditional Italian pizza 😊

Amazing pizza - best ever - small menu but made with attention to detail - the pizza base was just so delicious😊 drinks were expensive though.

A quaint little space on Gilles St with pleasant service. I do love Italian food however I was a little disappointed with this place. The antipasto starters were promising, but my company and I agreed that the main event of pizza and pasta was a bit of a let down in flavour. I mean it wasnt bad but it wasn't great. It was OK.

Great service vibe and of course pizza. Love the seasonal menu and great drink list suggest booking as it's quite small and gets pretty busy. <br/>New favourite.

Not what I was expecting. Was hyped up so much to be one of the best places for pizza but just very average. Still would recommend just before you have que

Such a wonderful vibe in this restaurant, and wonderful service! My boyfriend and I went on a Friday night, it was bustling, we had amazing service and the food was delicious! As vegans, a great pizza is difficult to come by, but this definitely served well above our expectations! The kale salad also tasted just like my Nonna's, so it gets a big tick from me! Can't wait to go back again!

Etica largely gets my rating of 4 stars due to its delightful pizza (if you like this style; I realise that you need to be in an "authentic Napoli-pizza style" mood to enjoy this, as sometimes you feel like an American style or even Greek style pizza). Awesome chewy (in a good way) freshly made base and frugal but yummy toppings. That was the good part; I'll get to the bad. <br/><br/>We sat outside which is charming and cozy despite being a somewhat industrial courtyard otherwise. The service was efficient if somewhat uptight. <br/><br/>There was something lacking for me here. I think it was partly the arrogant try-hard air of the place which also drew some overly try-hard hipster clientele. The waiter staff all looked irritable (could have been circumstantial to be fair) and tense. But it was more than that; the high prices and slightly snooty feel belied the otherwise simple and fresh potential. It didn't feel light and friendly there; it felt dour and aloof. <br/><br/>Anyway, good pizza.

Pizza was authentic and delicious. Service was great. Atmosphere was pleasant and romantic. If your a bloke, it's the perfect place to take your missus, she'll love it. Didn't like lining up but that's how it is and was worth it in the end. Also it's a little hard to find. Will definitely go there again!
Sarah
They advertised themselves as able to accommodate gluten free, which was one of our primary reasons for heading there. On arrival they refuted this and claimed that only the salad could be gluten free. As my friend doesn't enjoy rocket, she remained hungry for the entire evening. When we questioned this with the staff, they became defensive and abusive. I am committed to the concept of ethical eateries but will be giving this one a miss, and would give it less than one star if it was an option.
Ali
I love absolutely everything about this place! I hadn't been for a while but was so happy to see it still has the same cosy and welcoming vibe, and beautiful food and drinks. I also love the fact that they actually care about where the produce comes from here. This place must be run by people who are passionate about their trade, because it really shines through in everything they do.

the margherita pizza is amazingggg. authentic italian wood oven pizza the way it has always been and always should be. crust x base = delicious! would have loved to try the misto plate but they were "running low" on it.<br/><br/>downside is the rocket/kohlrabi salad is incredibly rockety without much acidic components to cut through the strong aftertaste. <br/><br/>minimalist menu. straightforward food and service. only takes reservations for the 6pm seating. beyond that is on a walk-in basis, where you write your name down on a sheet of paper provided. and wait until a table frees up.

Simply not worth the calories. Highlight of the meal was the antipasti plate to share for starters, a spread of tasty olives and various marinated vegetables with an assortment of mozzarella-style cheeses. The pizzas were the obvious let down - the eggplant option was overly wet and soggy in the middle, with the base barely cooked. The crust was the best bit, but it's unfortunate if that the highlight of a pizza. The only non-vegetarian option on the menu - the prosciutto - was actually just thick chunks of ham and cheese advertised with corn (opted for no corn), on a completely dry base. No tomato sauce or other sauce in sight, instead it was a bread-y mess. Not good. Ate half of each and decide it wasn't worth continuing the effort of chewing. Have been before with much higher praise, so not sure what's happened as of late. Won't be back. Well overpriced as well.
Lana Bercys
Really underwhelmed with what was served. Have heard rave reviews about Etica and that they serve the best pizza. The pizza we ate had a very soggy base in the middle with a salty sauce. Ordered the cotto that said it was topped with prosciutto, now I understand prosciutto means ham in italian as i am of italian heritage, but we were served actual ham instead of a beautiful prosciutto that was expected. To add to that, the zucchini was undercooked and it was a sprinkle of diced zucchini, hardly anything there. Over priced for a mediocre pizza. Dont think we will come back again.

As a true friend and member of the Vera Pizza Napoletana club: 'the esclusive club dedicated to the supporters of "true Neapolitan pizza"' I strive to decipher pizza friends from foes. Etica appears to be a friend and the best pizza I've consumed thus far in Adelaide (but tbh that's not a very hard mantle to win. If you think there's better pls enlighten me I'd like to try). The authenticism and base does it for me. Thin based but not crisp liked those modern faux pizzas, but thin and full of soul with thick, doughy crusts that hold flavour, cooked by it's aesthetically pleasing mosiac-tiled pizza oven. We had the margherita extra which was simply amazing (and I don't even really like margherita) and that mozarella hit the spot. The next with pork + fennel sausage and mushrooms was good but lacked that extra flavour oomph (most pizzas mid $20s). Misto plate entree = extremely fresh and colorful but on the more conservative serving size. I commend their use of purely ethical ingredients and the off-beat, nature interior is fun. We experienced friendly and prime service at this outing but likely because we arrived at 5.30 on the dot, beating the rush as another time we arrived at prime dinner time, waited in a literal line out the door for 15 mins, had no acknowledgement of how long we would be waiting or a wait list we could enter so just left. A testament to their fantastic pizzas but a system for waiting would be nice or people will just leave.

<br/>Fresh tasty and great service. Certainly ate my worth in quality cheese. Favourite salad rocket strawberry and goats cheese salad accompanied the pizzas well.

Arrived with a party of 12 for a friend's birthday at 6:30 on Saturday. We had made a reservation a week previously. At 6:45 we were informed that when we would be seated it would be in two groups of 6. Something they neglected to mention when the reservation was made. Absolutely disgraceful and we then had to find a place to give a group of 12 one table at 6:45 on a Saturday. Thank you very much Etica. You have lost our business and the chance of us ever returning.
Nicholas Linke
Had lunch here on Friday and it was amazing!  Great antipasto plate, incredible peppery buttery gnocchi which must have been hand made that day and then an awesome pizza, accompanied by a lovely glass of Fiano.  Quick, friendly service and authentic and tasty food, I could not recommend highly enough!

Came here on a week night and was able to get a seat quickly cause we were OK to sit at the bar table by the kitchen. I've seen reviews with how slow the service was, but during our experience we had timely and attentive service. We had the antipasto plate which was average, and three pizzas. The pizzas were good, but did not live up to the hype. Maybe this place was too hyped, but overall I though it was just OK and nothing amazing. There are better "fancy" pizza places in Adelaide and would choose those other places over Etica in the future.

"...gave the leftovers to my dog and even he refused to eat it!"Rude staff, service was terrible and they rushed us out the door... Pizza itself was pretty miserable too for what you paid for it.<br/><br/>We got rushed out and our leftovers chucked in a doggy bag, but I gave it to my dog and even he refused to eat it!<br/><br/>For the price you pay and all the hype, I really wouldn't recommend it....<br/>(Oh and the website sucks.)
Bruno Pavic
This establishment has the most unreasonable management I've ever experienced. I would like to mention that one member of staff (young man) was pleasant and this review should not reflect on him. I have eaten here multiple times and those previous experiences were strongly overshadowed by the completely abysmal service we received last Saturday. This is the first review I've ever felt compelled to leave and I eat out, a lot. Although the food is of high quality, its quantity on this occasion was very poor. However, If that was my only complaint I would simply not return and I certainly wouldn't leave a poor review on their Facebook page. I can only hope that the manager/owner of this establishment doesn't question the financial capacity of all his customers once they voice a concern regarding their experience. I also hope that the manger/owner doesn't (in the presence of a police officer) state "I would charge you double if I could". <br/><br/>To conclude, if you enjoy traditional Italian pizza/cuisine and know to never express concern regarding wait times/value of banquet, I recommend it. For everyone else I suggest a simple Google search with the aforementioned 'traditional Italian pizza/cuisine'. You will likely find a restaurant that delivers on quality of food, service and potentially a booking system that exceeds 6 pm

I do love a good pizza, but I find that trending pizza places are charging high end prices for just being a trending pizza restaurant! We went here a little while ago on a cool night and the first thing I noticed was how cold the hard bench seat was to sit on! Had to take my jacket off and place it under my butt before we even got started! Had the beef carpaccio to start with, the serving was small but pretty enough. The garnishes used for this dish were just sprinkled over, which in my opinion doesn't work with carpaccio as each piece of beef needs the garnish to cover it properly. I had used all the garnish up and was left with half a plate of topless beef, tragic! The pizza was just okay, the base was not cooked enough for me, as the centre was still raw. We had simple tomato, cheese and basil and again not enough basil garnish (about 3 leaves!) I had to ask for much more basil as there are only 3 ingredients on this pizza so you need basil in every bite! Had to ask for the dessert menu, but didn't order anything. The atmosphere is good and the place is really quite nice but we probably wouldn't return for the food, maybe for drinks and jazz as we found that pretty hipster cool!

stay away from this place. I went there with some friends tonight who are all seasoned foodies and were treated in a fashion that i didn't think was possible. For 7 people we got a tiny amount of food (waiting more than 50 minutes in between the portions) and when we tried to complain in reasonable way we literally got told "we have had our fill" and "we shouldn't go out for dinner if we cant afford it". Then they called the cops on us because we walked out. Avoid like the plague! (Unless you liked to be judged by a bunch of people who can't run a business in an 'ethical' way).
Michael Bev
Booked this place 2 weeks in advance as I was coming over from melbourne for the weekend. The table was booked for 6 pm - we arrived at 6:05 pm and was told our table has been given away as we were not on time. After telling the waiter that this practice is unheard in any establishment in the world and a courtesy call would have been appreciated he responded with "you could have called us" well yes smart mouth, I could have but Arriving at 6:05? Really ... I could understand if I was going to be 30 mins late, yes. We were then told we will be put on the list and would need to wait for a table. These guys simply have no idea about customer service or the key fundamentals of running a business. Your food will only get you so far. Handled extremely poorly and did not feel welcomed. You simply wouldn't survive in the big city.

Etica never fails to leave us full and satisfied! Etica is a lovely little authentic Italian restaurant. We have been here many times and every time I am impressed! The weekly changing menu consists of beautiful fresh antipasto, incredible home made authentic Italian pasta and lovely home style wood oven pizza that you even pull apart just like in Italy! Amazing fast service with good conversation. Lovely wines and home made chinotto and limonata. Highly recommended to all!
Laura
Excellent food & atmosphere but quite poor service. <br/><br/>The pizzas were all really good - the sauce so rich yet smooth and sweet with thin bases and simple toppings, though the bases could have been cooked a little longer - they were a bit soggy. We also had a couple of bowls of warm thyme & lemon olives which were amazing. <br/><br/>They cater well for vegans offering a few extra veg toppings which were off the menu. <br/><br/>I would have forgiven the slowness of service (we had to ask twice if we could order, after waiting half an hour fm for a waiter to come past us) as the restaurant is very busy, but we were then so rushed as soon as we did start eating. Plates were taken from us with food still on them, including half a bowl of olives and a few slices of bread. We had to ask them to stop, as we weren't finished eating and still had most of a bottle of wine to finish. We were also given a bill we didn't request before we were even offered dessert.<br/><br/>The restaurant itself is beautiful, especially the garden which was kept warm with gas heaters. <br/><br/>Etica could easily have received 5 stars if the service improved and the pizza bases were a little crisper.

This is my second visit to Etica. The first was for a family birthday. The second was with a group of six.<br/><br/>The food is absolutely divine and the setting is beautiful. Ambience is excellent, tonight they had live Jazz. <br/><br/>Service was knowledgeable and friendly however I have taken off some points for the feeling of being rushed.<br/><br/>It took about 30 minutes for our order to be taken (we had to get up and ask the waiter if we could order), then our plates were cleared as soon as the waiter assumed we were done. <br/><br/>Food being taken away before being finished and without asking is not ok, dessert menu was not presented until we asked and the bill was brought to us while we were thinking about dessert.<br/><br/>It's hard to give a lower end score to such a beautiful restaurant with amazing food and I understand it's a busy place with people lining up at the door but rushing your guests/customers is not okay.
Kirby Manning
My favourite restaurant in Adelaide. The food is authentic & delicious - there is no pizza like it in the state. As much as I enjoy our home grown grapes, I love trying new Italian wine. Each time I arrive I am greeted as if it were their family home. Highly recommend and strongly supported.

Those that know me know that I am a pizza fiend. I am especially passionate about traditional Neapolitan pizza. I once travelled to Napoli purely just to eat pizza. I was there for half a day and ate four of the best pizzas on offer. Etica is certainly the most traditional and, in my opinion, probably the best pizza in Adelaide. <br/><br/>Food: <br/><br/>Etica are the only restaurant in SA that have been certified by the 'Associazione Verce Pizza Napoletana' so you know that it's legit. And you can definitely taste it. The dough is tasty, soft in the middle with a crisp crust. The san marzano tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella melt and combine perfectly in the middle to form that delicious soupy cheesy sauce that dreams are made of. But they also offer some great salads that go so well with pizza. Everything they serve here is quality. If you're one of those people that like plebby suburban Australian pizza bar style pizzas with thick bases and covered in toppings (don't worry, I have a soft spot for them too) then maybe don't go here.<br/><br/>Service: <br/><br/>The owners Federico and Melissa are passionate and friendly people. They will look after you, but they are especially kind to their regular customers - which I find endearing. They are always flat out though, so don't go in there expecting a rushed meal, it's a night out.<br/><br/>Ambience: <br/><br/>The place is always warm and cosy thanks to the gorgeous wood oven sourced straight from Italy. It's a nice tucked away little spot in a quiet part of town making it ideal for either a group of friends or a romantic dinner date.<br/><br/>Dish to look out for: <br/><br/>Margherita, that's what it's all about. The Margherita Extra is the one with buffalo mozzarella, which is a must.
Sahar&Aurelio
really authentic Italian pizzas here. very simple and tasty but I wasn't too much of a fan of the crust it was a bit too crunchy for me! appart from that I enjoyed the pizza and atmosphere.
Claire Lillian
I love Etica! It always has a short and simple menu which makes it much easier to  make a choice. The service is always really friendly and efficient, and the staff know the menu well and will happily make suggestions. I have had a few pizzas here which have been far too saucy and the pizzas are very soggy, but over all I've had positive dining experiences. I love the ambience here, you could walk past Etica and miss the place, but once in the restaurant it's a lovely intimate dining experience.

Nowhere near as good as melt pizza but sweet place

Best pizza in Adelaide. The restaurant is welcoming and a great place to enjoy a meal, and the staff are brilliant too. Especially like the projector outside - great vibe. Don't change the menu, don't change the seating process, there's lots of traditional cafes around if you want that, this is great as it is!
Mashedpotato
August 2017, still awesome pizzas, but I would prefer to be served a whole pizza not two halves.<br/><br/>Beautiful, chewy, traditional simple pizza. The main pizzas here are maghertias with a choice of cheese. The pizzas are simple with minimal toppings...as they should be. But still soggy in the middle. Don't come here if you want mushrooms, pineapple, bbq chicken etc.
The Tasty Press
Since weaning myself off a diet of pizza and wine last year following a visit to Italy, I’ve been craving anything resembling an authentic Italian pizza....we decided to give Etica a go after hearing good things... Alas, this was what I had been waiting for. Simple, sprinkled toppings and delightfully seasoned, with a thin crust, soft and bouncy with a crispy browned (but not burnt) crust. The kind of base that makes you praise the lord that you aren’t gluten intolerant because those poor souls are missing the hell out.
FoodCritiq
Another great Adelaide eatery with lots going for it but leaves customers on the sidelines over 'mates' walking in so often have been left wondering if anyone still serving, left lingering for what would be more in sales for them, and the wine list...oh boy have the owners missed the memo that they are surrounded by the richest offering of wine yet their list is so hopelessly left wayside like their customers.

Authentic Napoiltana Pizza the way its meant to be!. If you're looking for Peri Peri pizza and garlic bread, this place probably isn't for you. But what you will find in this hidden gem is pizza the way it's meant to be. Tasty, full of flavour using the freshest organic ingredients. The antipasto is a great way to start, the salads are great sides and the pasta house made. The Margherita Extra gets a special mention. All matched with some interesting wines, both local & imported. Love this place.
Jessica Berry
Loved the pizzas. Great pizzas, very tasty and authentic. Although we had to queue up outside for a table we were happy to wait and the food definitely turned out to be worth waiting for. It is a quirky, funky place, but we liked it and the service was good to say it was a busy Friday night.
Socalenergy
Awesome pizza, great wine, and lovely service. Always a pleasure.. Etica serves up traditional pizza Neapolitana that is always delicious and made from no-compromise, high-quality ingredients that are ethically-sourced and often local. We keep coming back because we know we will be treated well, served a nice meal, and poured great wine. It's always casual atmosphere that makes you want to stay a while.
Katdan
Soooo good!!. Amazing gnocchi .& pizza. Fabulous, trendy & amazing service! Do yourself a favour and go there for a bite!
Love ND
I went to etica tonight with my friend and absolutely loved it! Everything about it from the decorations to the glasses had use reminiscing on our Nonna and Nonnos! The staff there were so beautiful! And the pizza was to die for! Defenetly going back!
Hungry_beavers
Hungry beavers. The owner made us up a special anti-pasto platter that was delicious beyond belief. My fellow dining beaver claimed to not like cheese, or the other items presented to us (an affliction that was immediately remedied) the moment that sweet cream touched his beaver lips. He still claims to not like these foods, unless they come from Etica. Wahoo Yum Yums!
Lucy Murphy
Etica sure doesn't have any etiquette.<br/>After being told we would be waiting for a table for 30 minutes turned into an hour and a half wait.<br/>A male was extremely rude when asking about when our table would be ready. Eventually gave up and walked down the street to la trattoria to amazing service.<br/>Won't be returning to etica again.
Frankie
I really wanted to like this place. It looks gorgeous, the staff are friendly, the wine list is smart, and the owners have gone out of their way to do things the traditional way and to source ingredients of the best quality. Regrettably, the pizzas are average at best. As other reviewers have noted, the excessive liquid content of the toppings mean that the bases are completely soggy, rendering utterly useless any attempts of the cooks to deliver the perfect base. Further, even without the water logging, they were not cooked right, with some of the pizzas burned (not pleasantly wood oven burnished) and others partially uncooked. The toppings themselves are also mediocre; stingy and under-seasoned. These flaws cannot be justified by claims to authenticity; no doubt there exist soggy, sparse and flavourless pizzas in authentic Italian pizzerias, but that doesn't make them good pizzas.
Chris Holmwood
Pizzas were a bit limp. As the crusts lost their tumescence the topping kept sliding off. On the upside the antipasta was great. Wouldnt go back unless pizzas improved.
N
Ethical.... Over priced. Pizza was okay yet the pasta (ragu) was disappointing. Nothing like you'd expect from a restaurant with such a great reputation. We were lucky the service was pleasant and the food came out quickly. Won't return.
Rebecca
Wait staff were friendly and pizzas were very nice, except they forgot our order. As they were very busy we assumed the wait was normal but almost an hour and a half later when we asked a staff member it came out that our meal had been forgotten. Ordered 7:30, ate at 9:15. The staff apologised once but really didn't give much concern when we were clearly a large table of 7 who had not received any food for over an hour...Really not impressed. Ruined the amazing vibe and pizzas from bad service.
Bluetinsel
This restuarant does not accommodate for bookings. Expectation is to get there at 5pm if you want a table especially any large groups. There are better serviced authentic italian restaurants with much less pretension.
Georgia.m.emery
The ravioli!. This place is real interesting! Yes, it's a little pricey but it's totally worth it. You can tell there's a lot of thought into the making of each dish and while the ravioli is around $25 for a small quantity - it's home made so carefully, and the flavours are still lingering in my mind.....As someone who rarely eats out because they cook a lot, this place satisfies the 'I've never tasted it like THAT before' feeling very much so! Well done and best wishes for this young restaurant.

Easily to become a pizza favorite! After hearing my sister's and her boyfriend's month's of bragging I finally had an opportunity to dine here. Wednesday evening before a Fringe show. Just perfect. I absolutely loved the place. From the simple, reliable and delicious pizza selection, of which we had Margarita and an eggplant one, to the absolutely beautifully fresh rocket, walnut and strawberry salad (hmm yum!), the food was not to be faulted. From there the quirky but attentive, efficien, fast but still very personable service. I don't think that there is anything I didn't like about this place. I just cannot wait to come back again....and fast :) Highly recommended!!!

Insulting. Seriously, the prices at this place are absolutely insulting. $26 for a pizza with buffalo mozzarella and basil? That is a joke. Also, none of the pizzas have meat, why are they touting the ethics of non factory farm meat? It stinks like one big marketing ploy and I'm fed up. Not coming back.

We called to try to book a table for four to be told that they wouldn't take any booking but it wouldn't be a problem at that time. We arrived to the restaurant and were told to wait alongside other customers outside despite several tables being clear but not set up. When we were finally offered a table, we were quite excited about the 'true napoletan experience' they advertise but we only found tasteless pizzas and pasta, lack of many ingredients, terrible service and basically a joke value for money. It should be unethical to waste your time and money..

Very simply the best. Go away you grumpy reviewers and put a sock in your mouth! ...Etica very simply offers one of the best - authentic - dining experience in adelaide, and is unashamedly proud of serving the BEST PIZZA IN SA - (if not the world)<br/><br/>We were welcome on Saturday night just after 7pm by a broadly smiling Melissa, dressed in the prettiest floral top, who assured us that yes, we would make it to our 8.35pm movie on Rundle street. She told her fellow waiter who looked after us beautifully. We ordered, and relaxed whilst sipping our rose wine, and soaking in the bon enfant atmosphere + tentalising aromas.<br/>Mr X & I devoured fungi and sopressa pizza with grunts (me!) of primal enjoyment <br/>indeed, it tasted/felt/smelled like italy, Yes! I am converted! give me more!
Prathida2009
Overpriced. I ordered a main course of homemade ravioli which cost me $25.00 and I got ten squares of ravioli. It was smaller than an entree serve. My friend ordered an $18.00 pizza and got charged $27.00 for her pizza. They only have two exotic Italian beers which are ridiculously priced. They are pricing themselves out of the market and they will lose their "new kid on the block" status that Adelaide is famous for. Food was average and we will continue to support other long term institutions like Amalfi in the Adelaide CBD where you get delicious food and value for money.

Disappointed. Had heard mixed reviews beforehand. Tried a number of pizzas, some interesting, but all with very soggy bases. Would have expected more from a place whose reputation is built on their pizza oven etc. Service was only fair. Appreciated BYO.

To be honest I was told by friends that this restaurant was great and had to go. Well what a disappointment. The food was very average and we had to wait ages for it. We were told that we couldn't order individually but had to choose from their set banquet menu so we did. They also said that they will continue to bring out pizzas until we had enough to eat so we were fine with that. Unfortunately though and by the way there was more than 6 in our group after bringing out 5 pizzas all up and soggy at that we were them informed that we couldn't have anymore because they had run out of pizza dough. Hello this place only makes pizzas how can this be. So we asked for the bill and started to leave. Meanwhile we can still see more pizzas being placed in the wood oven. What a wasted night

The bad reviews are from bad people. There are two options for genuine italian pizza: 1. spend $1500, fly to Naples, buy a pizza, fly home, 2. go to Etica.

Mouth watering!. This place has to be a good thing when it is just as good as pizza I've eaten in Naples! They don't take bookings, so go early to avoid waiting! But it's even worth waiting for! The rose wine on offer is divine - and the service is always great and staff while sometimes seem busy are always attentive and each time I've been here they've always checked on us (unobtrusively) throughout the meal... Try it you won't regret it!

Outstanding pizza...very poor service. Let me preface this review by saying this is the best pizza I've had since my time in Napoli (reminds me of Da Michele and Di Matteo). The ingredients used are of the highest quality, ethically sourced. Simple flavours come together in ways that are sublime. Jazz trio often plays in the courtyard adding to the lovely atmosphere.<br/><br/>Having said that, the service can be beyond poor. I've been here several times and the serving staff can ignore you and your requests for an unreasonable period of time. Employing one more waiting staff would make a world of difference to this busy spot that doesn't take reservations.<br/><br/>Nevertheless, let me just say I would go through hell and back and dine with the devil himself for more of this pizza. It's easy to forget the poor service once that buffalo mozzarella, amazing tomato base and perfect thin base hits your lips.

The best pizza we've had in Adelaide, and a great wine selection! Brilliant service and very helpful, simpatico staff. Very impressed, will definitely come back.

After eating at about 90% of the restaurants Adelaide has to offer, I'm writing my first review. Unfortunately the only reason I'm writing it is because I was so disappointed with etica. Although the food looked and smelt good, I didn't actually get to try it because I got so tired of waiting I just had to leave. The staff were also 'avoiding' the situation which became apparent with other dining customers. Hopefully they can learn their limits on capacity at the bar.
Shamus
Didn't make the cut. There are a few things that I look for in a restaurant – prompt and happy service, quality ingredients, tantalising tastes and value for money. Unfortunately for Etica, I felt like I was let down on all except the quality of the ingredients.
MunchingSharkie
Great Pizza. The pizza bases are the best here. Awesome atmosphere, always packed and play great music. The staff are all so talented and cultured.

Never again. Went to etica for the first time and won't be returning, the service is slow no table bookings makes it frustrating and as for the pizza side of things the margherita was nice but thats about it!!!! we also had a potato pizza and the salsiccia pizza and was not very nice at all.So all in all over priced poor service and below average pizzas.
Crab Cakes
Authentic Italian food. It is clear that these guys have done their research. Couldn't ask for more.

A little bit of London in Adelaide. Went with 5 mates on Saturday night. Had to wait, but it was well worth it. Had a lovely young waiter, who gave us a deal which for $34 each was hard to beat. Fantastic pizza, great wine, gluten free pasta and funky tunes, reminded me a little of my London days and the funky little haunts you find in east London. If you like something a little different. This is a must.

Great pizzas let down by terrible service. Etica make exceptional pizza: high-moisture dough, thinly stretched, topped with restraint using the best ingredients and cooked at very high heat in a wood fired oven. Their shelf life lasts about 10 minutes before the toppings soak through the base – this isn't the kind of pizza you eat from the fridge the next morning – but if it there's still anything left on your plate 10 minutes after the first bite soggy pizza is the least of your problems.<br/><br/>That said, as much as I love their pizza Etica really need to work on their service. I'd heard about their service problems from friends and sadly my experience was no different. The waitstaff themselves are very friendly and helpful, but they are infuriatingly slow and/or forgetful. I asked for chilli oil before our pizzas came to the table and it didn't arrive until we'd both finished our meals. The real frustration came after dessert when we were ready to pay. It took 10 minutes to get anyone's attention to ask for the bill, then another 20 minutes and 3 reminders to receive the bill. I've never had this much trouble giving someone $85 before in my life!<br/><br/>Come to Etica for the delicious traditional pizzas, stay for the fact that they won't let you pay and leave.

We were completely ignored by arrogant staff for 15 minutes as we waited to be seated. Despite staff walking past us over ten times no one made eye contact, acknowledged that we were there or remotely indicated that they wanted our custom. We left and went to Melt in the city - service was amazing and pizza's beautiful! Three strikes now at Etica and we won't be back....
Cheryl
Laid back bit of cheese. Wine list was small but educated. Menu is equally ( and thankfully ) small, seasonal and true to the mozzarella ... If a little safe ? The tables were in some spots a little too close for comfort. The service was laid back yet capable. There may have been a wait for tables but we never felt the rush ( in a good way). After living in Italy for some time my expectations of simple but good ingredients are always high - but the mozzarella here is stunning. Would love to see a bit more crunch in that pizza dough, but Etica is on to something ! Love the decor and whilst its not the best pizza in Adelaide yet there is promise in this atmospheric spot !
Food For Thought
Nothing Special. I've wanted to try Etica for ages now and finally went last night with some friends. I didn't mind waiting for a table although seriously it's not hard to organise table bookings, but i found the rest of my experience pretty ordinary too. The staff we're a bit all over th place. Took forever to take a drinks order and then took our food order afterwards. They brought out 2 water glasses and 4 wine glasses (there was 5 of us) and forgot the water jug. We didn't get any bread which was promised and waited for at least 40mins for our food. And I was so looking forward to it and found it was just so boring very plain, my friend had a vegan pasta which was pretty much just tomato sauce. Won't be returning especially for $27 a pizza.

After seeking out this pizzeria, based on a review I'd read in the Gram, my absolute level of disappointment has led me to write my first review ever. The speciality of the house, the margherita, could have been mistaken for soup pizza. The topping was so sloppy that the base was soggy, meaning you couldn't pick up a slice without the topping sliding off. When I pointed this out to the host/waiter he said that was the traditional way they made it and that the pizza should be cut in quarters and folded over like a sandwich. He said the pizza is only in the oven for 90 seconds at a super high heat and that the pizza just needed to sit so the fluid could evaporate off. We waited a number of minutes and that didn't happen. As per the review in Gram, the base tasted lovely but there was not a hint of "perfectly crisp on the outside and deliciously soft on the inside." It was soft and chewy and sloppy. The most disappointing thing though was the waiters attitude. Blind Freddy could tell our pizza wasn't right. The pizzas on tables either side of us looked fine. Ours had a water logged look to it. But our waiter would have none of it. He didn't come back to check if it was ok. Didn't bring the salad we ordered and didn't mutter a word to me when I paid. We also had a pork and beef Ragu pasta. The flavors were lovely- very light on meat though (3 small cubes). All in all, based on the waiters attitude, I wouldn't go back to give them a second go.
Mister Creamy
Wank, total wank.. Arrived, nobody greeted us, had to ask to be seated. The furniture is straight from a hard rubbish disposal sidewalk, uncomfortable chairs and crappy tables. The waiter gave us the menus, and I had to laugh out loud. $25-28 for a margherita pizza!!!! And the music was very loud and bad, and the story of the ethical treatment and wristies that the animals receive before being sliced into pizza toppings didn't mean a thing, as it was meat-free week at Etica hipster palace. It is a vacuum of animal justice for emptying your wallet and not getting anything back for it.<br/>We placed the menu's back on the table and left without saying a word. Avoid at all costs.
Feedme
Give it a go!. I don't understand why people have been so overly critical of this place! The food seems basic but the point is the fullness and deliciousness of the raw fresh organic ingredients! I will definitely be returning and would recommend others do too! you won't be disappointed! the pizza and pasta is great but the beautiful little fresh salads are fantastic also!

Great Pizza!. I loved the pizza at Etica. I think its better than a lot of other more celebrated Pizza bars in Adelaide. ..Much more authnetic! Thanks to the great staff too!

Very Dissapointed. Have reviewed many of places in Adelaide for several media publications however this has proved to be the most overrated and disappointing establishment by far this year. Upon arrival everything had seemed fine, the owner, who lives upstairs, had introduced himself and explained the menu and where he sources his ingredients. Having spruked his establishment to the hilt, we were prepared to sit through something unique. My accomplice ordered the Pesto Fettuccine and i had ordered the Salame pizza, both of which dishes had been recommended highly. The worst experience was when i chipped a tooth on an olive pip, the waitress simply laughed it off and said "oops, i must've forgot one" whereas as the proprietor was more interested that i don't make an issue of it in front of other patrons, more interested in hushing me out of the door. The pesto fettuccine was not seasoned at all to taste and the basil used in the pesto was picked way too immature which resulted in a grassy taste. Overall, if you are looking for a mouzarella bar in Adelaide i would strongly recommend Pizza e Mozzarella Bar on Pirie Street, Etica haven't obviously done the ground work to warrant a visit, unprofessional reaction to such an important health issue only goes to show they have a long way to go.

Great Atmosphere!. Went for dinner on a Wednesday and absolutely loved it!<br/>Pizza was amazing, loved the sauce and the little garden flowers, the whole atmosphere was chill and intimate.<br/>Perfect spot for a date with dark rooms and candlelight, or to share a few ciders with mates.<br/>Definitely coming back!
Joanna
The service was really slow and the pizza was plain. The soft drink was nice but a but excessive at $5.
John
What absolute obsurd prices and prententious staff. They should be embarassed charging $23 for that pizza.
Shane
Service, food and prices need to be refined for me to return. Etica is a quaint little restaurant with a well founded concept based on good quality ingredients grown in a natural and ethical way. I was really looking forward to dining at Etica but I can’t say that the experience turned out to be pleasant. The pizza was very slow to arrive and when it did, it was essentially a small piece of very soggy and slightly burnt dough with a dash of tomato and a few herbs. All of this for the ludicrous price of $23 for one small pizza.<br/><br/>Sorry guys, great concept but I wouldn’t recommend you as there are too many good restaurants in Adelaide that beat Etica hands down.
Shamus
I won't be returning. I can think of a few words to describe the food. Soggy, burnt, bland and overpriced. The service was very slow. The venue was nice and the concept was good but they didn't follow through with the food or service.

Great pizza!! this is the Closest tasting pizzaa in Adelaide to that I've had in Italy!! Who cares if you have to cut it yourself, some people in Adelaide need to be a little more open minded. Great taste good fresh ingredients and cool atmosphere. The cheese platter was also a treat. Credit to the young couple that at contributed something different to the Adelaide food scene!!

Beautiful Pizza. Pizza is a diverse food. Depending on where you are from, and what you are used to, pizza could mean anything to you. Etica shows us the real meaning of pizza. The classic Napolitano style is perfected here, so with a mind (and taste) open to someting different from your average pizza, Etica is a must try!! Not to mention the mozarella and desserts, delicious!
Vias
Average. I really wanted to like this place. On paper it's great, ethical, wood oven pizza in a cute locale, but sadly my experience was not good. Decent flavour but sloppy, poorly cooked base and incredibly rude and arrogant service. I will probably give them one more shot but I won't hold my breath.
Superstarr
Although Etica has a nice interior and concept it lacks in many areas, the place is quite small and in a bid to fit more customers tables are very close together, leaving you at an uncomfortable distance from other customers. The menu was also a bit hard to read, and pizzas were overpriced for the minimal amount of toppings that come on it, such that a pizza base some tomato sauce some mozzarella and a few leaves of spinach cost $23, our pizza was also a bit burnt making it quite bitter. Overall I would not recommend this place as we left still quite hungry and felt ripped off.
Oohl
Perfectly executed. We are definitely returning... brilliant Zbigniew pizza, nicely charred on the edges, beautiful ingredients... best rocket/pear/pinenut salad of any restaurant yet (and I've had way too many). Nice wine list, and both the montepulciano and sangiovese we tried were delicious. The banquette seating along the wall is a bit tight for big bummed girls and the tables could benefit from a few more op shop candles at night. We had the only one and I felt quite special. The additional lighting on the food really enhanced it. The service was absolutely impeccable and friendly. See you soon.

The best pizza in town! Finally we have somewhere that has pizza that resembles the real thing. Those that don't like it, go back to Dominos!

A bit of a wankfest. Since recently becoming vegan a couple of months ago, I am always on the lookout for dinner places that cater for my requirements. I had heard about this place through a friend of a friend and decided to see if they were open for dinner for father's day. I rang to make a booking, which they said they didn't do (a bit weird for a restaurant) but they would set up a table for us and we 'should be fine'....a little bit worrying since I had already been turned down by several other restaurants due to the occasion. We got our table though, so can't complain about that. Pros: Nice ambiance about the place and the staff were attentive. Cons: Although attentive, waiter was a tad wanky with the whole Italian thing, choosing to speak to us in Italian through parts of the order taking process. I understand that they are going for the whole traditional Italian experience thing, but it is very disappointing when the only pizza that is vegan has a topping of tomato sauce, garlic and.....um, no that was it. I am glad that I did not actually have a appetite before going, because I would still have had it after I left. If they are going to serve a traditional pizza, fine, but it is a bit rich to expect the customer to pay top dollar when you get nothing on it. It is a real shame because I do appreciate their animal friendly ethics and choice of ingredients. Just can't justify the price for the lack of food and flavour. Pity.

A group of us had a table reserved at Etica, though they said they don't do bookings. We arrived quite literally 1 minute late, and waited to be shown to our table. After standing there for a while without being greeted, we were then told that they had given our table away to another group. There were only 2 tables large enough for a group of our size and they had given it away to a group of 3! They were really unfriendly about it all, didn't apologize for us now having to find a different restaurant to have dinner at, and when we turned around to leave, we heard one of the staff there rudely say 'well thanks for letting us know'. He didn't say this to our faces, but rather behind our backs with attitude. We couldn't believe this kind of treatment after arriving just 1 minute late and will definitely not return again!

Amazing and responsible. My husband and I were looking for a great place we could go for a celebratory dinner. After a flick through the entertainment book, vatious websites and Urbanspoon, I settled on Etica, although some of the review's on Urbanspoon were somewhat 'scathing', not everything is for everyone. What got Etica over the line? Ethical treatment of animals, use of local produce, vegan options (including beer and wine) and the promise of atmosphere.<br/><br/>I am all about atmosphere and good food! We definitely hit the jackpot with Etica. (Tip for new players, they don't take bookings, so just rock on in and hope for the best!) we arrived about 18:45 on a Friday night and were attended to promptly. The venue is essentially a town-house that has been gutted into a restaurant style open space with the wood-oven providing the feature of the dining area.<br/><br/>We commenced with the vegan starter plate which comprised of marinated mushroom, capsicum, artichoke, olvies and ciabatta bread, delicious and fresh! Next stop, pizza and pasta of course, the Funghi Pizza (awesome, cheese was minimal and delicious, dough - amazing , sauce fresh and flavoursome, mushrooms - perfect) we also ordered the Pasta Ragu which was also fantastic.<br/><br/>We had already decided we were going to go somewhere for desert however when we paid, Frederico asked us to wait a bit longer and he would bring us something sweet (at no cost). He brought over a freshly made Baba to share - I would never usually order this... by golly, what have I been missing.<br/><br/>Frederico was a gorgeous waiter, attentive but not over the top, we enjoyed chatting and promised we would take the wind out of the few 'scathing' reviews and add our two bobs.<br/><br/>My husband and I totally loved it and will definitely be going back.<br/><br/>PS Enoomah Rose - WOW!
Shane
Good to great. Went for a late night bite on a Thursday night, staff were terrific - friendly and knowledgable about the menu. Didn't feel rushed at all which was great. Had some mozzarella to begin with some house made chilli, then a pizza and salad. All food had plenty of flavour and pizza was just as i'd expect. Will return often.
Josh
One comment- who ever wrote about their disappointment at a margherita pizza not having seafood on it. Please in future check your facts before having an ill informed rant. In fact if you know so little about food, keep your thoughts to yourself. as for 'sloppy' pizza- yes Napoli style pizzas are a little wet in the middle. Just leave reviewing to people who have a clue. <br/>Etica make what so far seems to be the most traditional NAPOLI style pizzas in Adelaide- beautiful!!!
Roy
Authentic. My experience<br/>- staff: extremely friendly<br/>- delicious authentic NAPOLITAN pizza<br/>- appropriately priced<br/><br/>Common to Melbourne with D.O.C and +39 etc, perhaps Adelaide not as knowledgeable about traditional Italian cuisine, hence the negative reviews. To the pretentious uncultured critics, understand what this pizzeria is about before you go in expecting an organic crust/dominos/pizza hut pizza. Closest experience to a pizza from Campagna in Adelaide. Much appreciated venture!
Adam R. Durst
I would not return. Not worth the money. Crust/dough had excellent flavor and potential. But technical execution was poor. Cooking of the crust was incomplete, air temp in oven was hot enough to cook exposed crust...floor of oven was not hot enough, leaving dough under toppings completely uncooked. Pizza sauce was also poor, reminded me of spaghetti from a can. Service was bright and enthusiastic, but lacked attention, forcing me to tap one on shoulder to order. Great idea...but lack technical skills to pull it off.
Andreas
Best pizza around!!! Great service, atmosphere and the food is to die for. Highly recommend it. I will definitely be back. Finally somewhere good to eat in the city.

Ripped off!. Ok i've been to Italy and i don't know everything about old skool italian authentic ways to serve pizza BUT margarita pizza without seafood! I'm sorry! What?! paying $24 for a piece of dough with tomato paste and oregano??? Also the plates were too small (bread plates!!)- food falling onto the table everywhere. But the attitude - I'm sorry. "we don't slice your pizza here"! You have to cut your own". in fact you can come up to the counter and cut it with a blunt knife. They literally refused to cut the pizza for us which led to spilt wine in our salad as there wasn't enough room to cut a pizza on the packed table! Also, I didn't know soggy pizza was old skool italian tradition?! If you plan to take a risk at this restaurant (which has marginal potential) take your own margarita topping and also pizza cutter. Not going back!

2nd try...never again. Ok so I tried out etica again..dont know why I bothered after the first disaster of a night!.<br/>Our waiter paid no attention to us seems like he was to occupied by some other "regular" customers.<br/>Had to wait 25 min to get someones attention to try and order, the antipasto should be called a garlic & salt plate,,thats all I could taste..thanks for trying to be authentic! Our pizza was very bland and soggy, the porcini mushrooms were very gritty too.<br/>Also noticed they done have any desserts..or do they??
Theresa
Appaulling service!! Are dinners forgotten about when sit near walk way?? Never have i walked out of restaraunt without paying, bout doubt these staff would have even noticed, certainly not concerned with service, customer satisfaction, or word of mouth. Enjoyed one of my four dishes, but not worth a mention. Never to return or recommend. Sloppy pizza too!!!!
Mike
Yawn..really ok next. So I heard this was great, thought ok has to be better then "goodlife " which to be honest is so overrated. So i try this place, seems there is a level of pretentious douchery hitting the Adelame food scene. Ethical Pizzeria, some little buzz word will bring the sheeple flocking. Turns out it does, pizza was ok , not amazing but it was ok, Thing that annoyed me the most was the staff, the lady ordering in front of me unable to pronounce her pizza was given an italian lesson, and when asked for her pizza without an item, was told no substituions, hmmm hello if anything it is a subtraction. Adelaide will no doubt continue to flock, stick the words organic in front of what your selling and you will be able to eat your salami with a better karma balance. pizza 6.5/10

Bases were quite soggy and for the price paid they could cut them for u.

Absolutely on the mark. I've eaten at Etica a few times now and I have loved every single journey through the menu! Their food is wonderfully prepared and thought out with authenticity and flavour winning out over flashy/fancy filler. Every mouthful is delicious, juicy and allows the fine carefully selected ingredients to really shine.<br/><br/>The atmosphere is lively, but still casual. Staff really know what they're talking about and are well trained on the dishes, their ingredients and where it all came from, which is essential to an ethical pizzeria e mozzarella bar. I always feel as though I'm a welcomed member of the family when I dine at Etica and I am treated well by staff who genuinely care about the food they are producing.<br/><br/>The cheese and the pizzas are the highlights without a doubt - there's literally nothing as fresh and tasty in Adelaide and I highly recommend trying out the difference!
Laurensca
Worst pizza ever. Im sorry adelaide but how can you say this is good pizza?! its burnt on the edges, soggy in the middle, and is completely bland. i ordered the margarita special but i don't know what was so special about it. it was just runny tomato, a small amount of mozzarella and 4 tiny shrivelled basil leaves. and to cap it off the service is terrible, the waitress was unfriendly and inattentive. i have been there 2 times, and both times were exactly the same. so i have learnt my lesson! if you want good organic pizza try goodlife on hutt st!
Paul Gee
Poor value. Bit of a fad.. I feel that Etica is a bit too cool for school. Sure, it's a lovely place, with friendly staff, and it's refreshing concept. I just feel they take the proverbial a bit. Ordered a Marinara (which is vegan - apparently the name has nothing to do with seafood). It had a nice base with a little bit of tomato sauce and a few pieces of basil. Authentic Italian, apparently? Sorry, I can't take that seriously. For $20 I don't want to be a victim of a 1000000% mark up. I want something tasty that will satisfy my tum. Back to the drawing board please, Etica.
Matthew Wright-Simon
At last. An eatery that's open about (humane) death! Tasty, too.
Moustache
Enjoyable. Pros: Lovely atmosphere, very friendly waitress, speedy service, good ingredients, rustic style pizza that was good quality and had decent flavor.<br/>Cons: backless chairs on our table, no reservations means pot-luck getting in, somewhat limited pizza selection.<br/><br/>Overall, I really enjoyed the experience and will return.

Worst Pizza Ever- Redux. The review that I posted on the 17th June 2012 got pulled because it violated Urbanspoon's guidelines. Fair enough. I thought it was pretty clear that I only write scathing negative reviews, that's my shtick.<br/><br/>Here is the G-rated version of my original review. Note that it is completely devoid of humour because the people patrolling this review page are particularly sensitive. Someone even privately messaged me and called me a "sick person" and an "loser." I didn't dispute these remarks because I didn't, and still don't disagree with them.<br/><br/>I haven't reviewed any restaurants for a while, but after an absolutely miserable dining experience at Etica, I feel that it is my responsibility to prevent you, my fellow Adelaidians, from making the same mistake I did.<br/><br/>The pizzas were just terrible- they consisted of a soft doughy base topped with a pool of bland sauce and a miserly sprinkling of ingredients. The pizzas came out uncut, you have to cut them yourself with your blunt cutlery. There is no reason a pizza should be served uncut at a restaurant where the vast majority of the tables are sharing. Because of the softness of the base and the puddle of liquid on top, the pizzas were a nightmare to cut and once you cut them, the runny sauces spilled everywhere and made the pizzas a sloppy mess. I don't care if that's the way the pizza maker thinks it should be; if a pizza is soggy, it becomes inedible regardless of the buffalo mozzarella and organic tomatoes. The "ethical" ingredients in and of themselves were inoffensive, but when combined into a pizza as a whole, I found the end product unappealing, unappetising and unsatisfying. I didn't have any of the wine my table ordered because I'm allergic, but the water was fantastic. It must have been the healthy dose of "ethics" it received from the positive energy radiating from the owners and staff.<br/><br/>At the back of the menu, you will find a few paragraphs extolling the virtues of this pizzeria, filled with marketing buzzwords like "biodynamic" and stories of how the farmer drives the cows to the slaughterhouse and stay by their side before they are "stunned by a captive bolt stun gun shot to the brain." Thanks for that, that's exactly what I like to read before having a meal. If you open a pizzeria and your pizzas are substandard, why should I care whether the cows are treated "homeopathically" as stated on the menu? Homeopathy is pseudo-medical nonsense peddled by charlatans; treating cows "homeopathically" essentially amounts to feeding them water. Homeopathy is devious quackery at worst, and an expensive placebo at best. I acknowledge that placebos do indeed relieve symptoms of ailments in some people, but cows do not possess the self awareness that we humans share. If you you give a cow a sugar pill or a homeopathic solution, they cannot distinguish the placebo from their regular food. Additionally, the cow is simply unaware that it is being treated "homeopathically." The only concession I will make is that the cow handler may experience the placebo effect by proxy, and come to the misguided conclusion that the cow being treated is getting better. If a cow is sick, you feed it real medicine, not a placebo and hope that the cow thinks its real medicine. <br/><br/>Etica proudly claim that their pizzas are "ethical", it's even in the name of their restaurant. We all know about the ingredients because they go on and on about it on the menu and website. What about their operations? I would assume that the operations would have to be ethical in order to produce "ethical" pizzas. So here are some questions for the owners of Etica- Do you purchase carbon credits to offset the smoke that your oven spews into the atmosphere? If not, do you have a carbon capturing device on site? Are your cleaning agents biodegradable? Do you compost your waste? Is the electricity you consume 100% green renewable energy? Do you have a rainwater tank or a water recycling system? Is your glassware made from recycled materials? Are your aprons made from organic free trade cotton? How energy efficient is your premises? Would you agree that killing animals is fundamentally unethical? If so, why do you serve meat products? I despise the fact that you pick and choose what you think is ethical, and ignore other moral obligations that contribute to a truly ethical pizza. Perhaps you should change your name to "Etica- Somewhat Ethical Pizzeria."<br/><br/>Service was nonexistent, besides the basic tenets of restaurant service like taking our order and fetching our food. Here are some suggestions for the waitstaff- don't lean over a customers head while serving them, do it from the side. Tell us what pizza you are bringing us rather than just dropping it on the table. At least pretend that you enjoy your job. I don't expect you to be my best friend, but I do expect you to be competent.<br/><br/>To summarise: over-priced soggy bland pizzas with minimal toppings + inexcusably bad service + "homeopathically treated" cows + ridiculously confrontational "ethical" grandstanding = the most miserable and enraging dining experience I have had this year.<br/><br/>Don't be fooled by the crowds of people lining up to get a table at this joint, Etica served the worst pizzas I've ever had, "ethical" or otherwise. This is the opinion I am entitled to; if that makes my palate unrefined then so be it. If the Etica cheer squad still find this review offensive and try to get it deleted, I strongly encourage the Urbanspoon moderators to assess this review objectively.

Good Pizza? definately NOT!!. Dear Etica,<br/>1. Dont roll your eyes at me for asking to have my pizza cut. How am I suppose to know that "it's supposed to be uncut". <br/>2. If you expect me to cut my own pizza, give me a pizza wheel, not a butter knife.<br/>while youre at it, get me a sponge to soak up the pool of juices on the pizza.<br/>3. What's the secret recipe to your Ethical lemonade: 1 part powerade, 10 parts water?<br/>4. Waitress: If you cant smile, stay at home.<br/>5. Pizza maker: You have no idea!<br/><br/>Etica Pizzeria uses the finest ingredients.... and somehow stuffs it up.

Cosy. Ate last night. Despite the no bookings policy (what is it with this? It seems to just cause stress to staff when they have to disappoint people or send them to the pub til they can call them with a table) we got a table within ten minutes because there was only two of us. This place is tiny but has a good vibe. Staff not overly friendly but not rude. We had a the vegan antipasto, buffalo mozarella (divine) and a zbigniew pizza. The pizza took about 45 mins to come which I think is way too long for the size restaurant. It was good. NOt amazing and I agree it was a bit soggy but it was fine. We would return.

Good concept but disappointing meal. The staff were reasonably friendly. Nice place and good concept. However, wine overpriced and poor selection. The fennel and orange salad was bland. There was minimal dressing and only a few small bits of orange and not much fennel either. It was filled out with gritty cos and bitter radichio. But the pizza by far was the worst part of the dining experience. We ordered the margherita extra. I don't know what was extra about it. The pizza was burnt on the edges and soggy and doughy in the middle. It was also so thin that it just fell apart. The tomato sauce was uninspiring and there wasn't much else on there apart from some shrivelled up basil. I understand that the pizza is supposed to be simple and authentic but $25 for a soggy paper-thin pizza is a rip off. When we left, the pizza chef asked how everything was? I told him i was a bit disappointed with the pizza and explained what was wrong with it. He was polite and friendly but said it was supposed to be like that. Perhaps we were just unlucky with the food, but I will not be returning.

Truly authentic italian. I absolutely love Etica. The flavours are fresh. The food itself is very traditional and ethically sourced. They also have vegetarian and vegan options on the menu (no special requests!), including an extensive vegan wine list. The delicious flavours come from a truly passionate and knowledgable chef!! Highly recommended.

This place is ace. 4 of us without a booking on a friday night. waited 5 mins for a table. service was quick. food was flawless...really. also appreciate the ethos. finally something different in adelaide.

Great Food, Not-So Great Atmosphere. At first glance from the road, this place might just seem like someone's house, but this is certainly not the case. The food is simple, delicious and guilt free. It feels great not to have harmed an animal when eating here. However, while the outside is nicely set out with a herb garden and lit wich coloud light bulbs, the inside is very noisy and the lighting inside is very dim. There is also very little space, but I am pretty sure that they are going to put up a heated, sheltered area outside so people can eat out the front. While the atmosphere may not be the best, the food is fantastic,

What can I say? Best pizza in Adelaide by a mile. Great authentic Italian at its best. Definitely will return... And that I will do this weekend.

Over-priced, under-flavoured. What others have said about the organisation of this place is true. It's haphazard at best: we were told there'd be a 15-20 minute wait for a table so sat at the bar with a bottle of wine. After 40mins, we wanted to leave, but were assured it wouldn't be long. Didn't get seated for another half an hour, so all up we waited more than an hour. <br/>This would have been okay if the food was as up to scratch. Unfortunately it wasn't. We ordered different 5 pizzas to share which were basically just slight variations of a simple margarita. I thought the bases were okay, nicely salty but not anything special. My partner found the bases too fluffy and chewy. The toppings were not exceptional and so meagre in quantity that what they're charging for them is extortionate.I counted four small pieces of cheese on a pizza that cost over $20, and if there was basil on any of them as claimed you surely couldn't taste it. As someone else on here said, the popularity of this place shows how truly dire the quality of pizza in Adelaide is. Etica hypes itself up as truly Napolitano but it is far from it. you've ever had pizza in Italy - or indeed any decent pizzeria in Sydney or Melbourne - you're sure to be disappointed.

Tasty but tempered. The pizza is ace - delicious dough, fresh ingredients.<br/>unfortunately the food was tainted by the hands that served it. our waitress was short with us, cranky and unfriendly. we were shocked.<br/>if you're not a people person, don't work the floor. employ someone that will facilitate a pleasant dining experience. if you can't handle stress, don't work hospitality.<br/>if i felt welcome, i'd go back. but sorry, i don't.....so i won't.

Too much ethics not so much space!. I think the "success" of this awkwardly run and tiny place demonstrates the gap in the market for a a good pizzeria in Adelaide. A group of us saw the feature on Adelaide Matters and ventured there looking for a good pizza. Needless to say this is not a place for groups- there must have been 20 covers in total. The big hoo-ha about ethical slaughter made me uncomfortable- why be so in your face about it? I only came for a pizza. Anyway quite overpriced for a scantily dressed pizza. The base was good but these guys need a trip to Naples to taste the real thing- we did not try the salads (except from the vegetarian friend).

Agree with being disorganized! Husband tried to book for Mothers day but told just turn up at 6- which we did. Problem was everyone else turned up at 5:30! All tables taken. Be aware this place might disappoint you in the flesh. It's a tiddly little place and the lady who looked down on us for being LATE? Wake up Adelaide. So much fuss about this place it's so small and without bookings they want to make sure they are going to fill up early so they can go home early! But I don't fancy pizza at 5:30!!!!

Had a very bad experienece. Tried to make a booking but they informed that they don't take reservations, which is fine. We arrived at 730, were seated after 8, we wanted to order straight away, it took a while to get service, when we got service we started saying which pizzas we wanted and the girl told us that there was no more pizza because they had run out of dough!!! By this point we had had enough and were starving so we went to eat somewhere else! You think they might have informed us when we were getting seated or waiting in line. <br/>So I'm sure this place would serve nice food, it smelt great. But get there super early if you want to eat because they are unorganized.

Nice work,. Etica deserves all the success it gets. Very cool, little joint tucked away - wouldn't really know it was there. An education in mozzarella and the best pizza base I've ever had. So fresh. The toppings are authentically limited which allows the base to shine. I think that each piece should really have one bit of each topping though and they were a bit light on the fresh basil. Reasonably priced though and some very, very punchy organic wines which I didn't really know was possible.

Great Spot. Great spot for a quick bite. We shared a mozzarella tasting plate which was delicious! So much Mozza goodness! So many varieties in style, flavour and texture on the one plate. My partner and I had different favourites so choosing who had the last piece of each portion was painless.<br/>They have achieved a lot in a small space. Its small, intimate and very welcoming. <br/>Staff were knowledgeable, friendly and efficient.<br/>Will be back!

Well, at least they're trying.... I was walking around looking for somewhere to get dinner and Etica popped up on my Urbanspoon app. As a vegan I was excited to see the word "vegan" appearing all over their menu (I glanced at it on my phone as I walked), so I decided to visit for dinner. I chose to sit outside because inside was too hot (maybe from the pizza oven).<br/><br/>I was disappointed to find that only one pizza was actually vegan, and it was essentially just dough with tomato sauce and a few herbs. The sauce was very plain, but quite good. Eating this pizza reminded me of dipping pieces of bread into my family's homemade pasta sauce. Good, but not really what I was expecting (some vegetables on top would have been nice). Also, the pizza wasn't sliced so eating it took a fair bit of effort. Most of the times the word "vegan" appears on the menu they're talking about beer and wine.<br/><br/>The menu described in detail the reasons why they consider themselves "ethical", and whilst I agree with most of it (I applaud the fact that no "bobby calves" are killed), I was very disappointed to see the word "homeopathy" all throughout the paragraphs (this is essentially an unproven quack science). Reading about slaughter was also rather unpleasant, but at least it's honest.<br/><br/>Most of the menu is in Italian, which I found just a bit pretentious. I'm of an Italian background but don't speak it fluently, so it took a while to figure out what everything meant. This seems to be a growing trend in Adelaide...translate the menu to Italian, add the word "Cucina" to the restaurant name and then double your prices.<br/><br/>When I was done I went to pay, it was $25 for my pizza and a soft drink. I handed over $55 without thinking, assuming I'd get $30 back (I wanted a $10 note), but it was so hot inside (and I was starting to feel lightheaded) that I left without checking my change and had only received $25 back. I think they assumed I was paying a generous $5 tip...<br/><br/>So basically I paid a 20% tip on a $20 plain tomato pizza that shouldn't have cost more than $10. My own fault I guess.<br/><br/>I don't think I'll be back unless there's a drastic change. I realise they're only a new place but this was just way too expensive for what I got. In future I'll just go around the corner to Meesu and eat there, they have a much larger range of vegan options.

Delicious and authentic. The atmosphere was really cool. very small and intimate. <br/><br/>Ordered the cheese plate which was great. Perfect for sharing. Then shared the eggplant pizza and a fig salad. Both were delicious and simple. Was great to find a place that respects good ingredients and doesn't over-complicate a meal. Felt like being in Italy again. The pizza dough was to die for! Loved that the food wasn't too heavy. Didn't leave the place feeling heavy like a lot of Italian restaurants in Adelaide. <br/><br/>I went with my sister for lunch and it was the perfect amount to share for a great lunch.<br/><br/>Staff were lovely and know what they're selling to you.

Massively overrated. Food average and staff too cool to offer good service!

Not impressed with the price. You don't get what u pay for. Pizza e mozzarella is more value for money!
Juanita
Disappontingly average.. Had dinner with friends last week; very cute place, small but nicely decorated with a pretty courtyard. <br/><br/>Food was alright. Not bad, but not good enough to make us want to revisit. Mozzarella plate was enjoyable (particularly the buffalo ricotta). Beer and wine were okay, average. <br/>Pizza was a disappointment. Didn't realise until we went to order that they basically have 5-6 of the same pizzas (cheese, basil, sea salt) but with different mozzarella on each plus one pizza with olives, mushroom and salami. We ordered the Buffalo mozzarella, basil and sea salt pizza... well made, but bland. If basil is 1/3 of the ingredients of your pizza then it would be good to use more than 1 leaf for decoration - needed flavour. <br/>Salami pizza was more flavoursome than the first but nothing special. <br/>Price was fair ($120 for four people including a bottle of wine and a couple of beers), service was decent, atmosphere nice. But food was disappointing. Given the hype they really should deliver with their meals. Maybe the pasta was better? Hopefully they improve over time, but not sure we'll go back to see for ourselves. <br/><br/>Also, appreciate the ethical background and care that goes into their meals; probably didn't need to desribe in detail how each animal is slaughtered on the menu, was a little off-putting.

Ethical Excellence. This place exceeded all of my expectations. The staff are friendly and knowledgable and when the food arrived we could not stop eating until there was nothing left.Everything was so fresh and made more special by the staff constantly picking freshly grown herbs in around the garden where we were seated. I cannot wait to go back again!

Ethical, Organic and Amazing. I lucked across Etica when I asked my Urban Spoon app to recommend a place near home for dinner with a friend. We were very lucky to get the last seats in the house for dinner and I am so very happy we did. The vibe of the place was evident from the start and the staff were friendly and attentive...and then came the amazing food. We shared the Fusilli al Ragu and a wood oven pizza called Zbigniew. The portion sizes were perfect and the ingredients fresh and respected by the kitchen. I will definitely be back and will try and drag as many people with me to enjoy the experience as I can!

Went out to check etica, nice great vibe, friendly welcome and staff..the two owners made us feel really welcomed... the decor is fantastic...feels like you are in some authentic italian kitchen place with someone cooking you wood oven pizza.... GREAT selection of cheeses to start with...and awesome selection of pizza...(true pizza) no pretty colour it was just as it is what the freshest ingridients are...and the pizza dough to die for....great booze list too :) ....definetly recommend this place for pizza lovers and also for good cause :)

I wish I could review it! I rang 4 times to place a takeaway order. The first 3 times it rang out. On the 4th someone answered and asked me to hold on and I proceeded to wait and wait and wait, all the while hearing the busy noise in the background. After realizing noone was going to take my order, I hung up and got takeaway from EST. Sounds like word has spread about etica but it would seem they may not have the capacity to deal with the growing popularity.

Fresh beautiful food that tastes the way food should taste. Service was good, attentive and fast. A nice location, but a little small that will regrettably become packed as more people become aware. The only criticism (small) is that the serves are a little small and a little overpriced. 8/10

Excellent food, splendid atmosphere. Definitely coming back again

Best pizza in Adelaide. Delicious pizza and mozzarella range, friendly service, ambient atmosphere...what more can you ask for? Can't recommend highly enough!

Wow! What a beautiful restaurant. The food was devine! Everything was fresh, tasty and fast!!! We had the Vegan antipasti, bufalina pizza and a strawberry & cream calazone. While waiting for our meals we had the chance to read about how the produce have been sourced. The creator has obviously spent a lot of time and care selecting each and every product used on the menu. It was great to understand the restaurants passion for ethical food. Although we didn't have a pasta dish we did sneak a peak at a few coming out and they looked delicious! Staff were very friendly and welcoming. Cannot wait to come back!!

When a pizzeria advertises they use “organic” vegetables, you know you’re going to be paying a lot. When they also say the meat they put on the pizza has been farmed using “ethical” practices, you might as well hand over your wallet.

This restaurant is tucked away on Gilles Street.  I think without the sign at the front I would have completely missed it.  There was a long line up for this restaurant.  Unfortunately you cannot book this restaurant.

The great thing is that this place easily holds its own and impresses even those with no preconceived ideas of what the original flavours of pizza and buffalo (or bufala) mozzarella should be. The name already appealed to me before my first visit – translates to ‘ethical’...here is an extract from their website to explain further, “our priority in searching for ingredients, particularly animal products, is the ethical treatment of the animals concerned.

The service couldn’t have been more right on the money if they tried. Friendly, but not over the top plus super knowledgeable, helpful and attentive which made this place a pleasure to dine. For all of the mathematicians out there I drew up a simple equation to make things clearer: Friendly + knowledgeable + helpful + attentive / not-over-the-top = juuuuuuuuust right!

The Mozzarella tasting platter was an assortment of cheeses, including a cow mozzarella and a buffalo mozzarella, ricotta, and a plain and smoked version of another cheese. It was definitely eye opening to explore the subtleties in flavour from such delicate cheeses, particularly between a buffalo and cow milk mozzarella. I can see why buffalo mozzarella has been taken off as a gourmet choice.

Head down to Gilles Street and drop into Etica for some simple Italian food with ingredients being sourced organically and meat ethically farmed and available in Australia. The casual pizzeria has an outdoor courtyard in the front yard with a small veggie patch with herbs and veggies – no doubt that they use the stuff they grow in their food

This pasta was like a version of pesto, but using kale instead of basil. The flavour was subtle and delightfully green, rather than being overpowering with flavour as pesto can be.
