Review Ruby Raja - Adelaide

This eatery offers delicious Indian cuisine nestled in a heritage building. Good meal portion and friendly staff.

We had a great experience was quiet when we arrived and had a few choices where to sit but seats started to fill after we got there. Meals and rice were extremely good, garlic cheese naan bread very good also. The desert we had fried Naan with ice cream and condensed milk was amazing, perfect end to the meal. Service was great and the quality of food justified the price. Very satisfied.

My daughter and I came here for the first time for dinner tonight. The meals were delicious but I want to make a special mention of the two young ladies serving us. The place was packed out and the two of them were the only service staff. We were very impressed with how quickly we could order and also how quickly our food came out to us. Totally recommend and Will definitely come here again!!!

My husband and I dropped in for a quick bite to eat at Ruby Raja on Wednesday evening while waiting for our son to finish his gymnastics class. Service was friendly and efficient and the food delicious. Service was super quick - we'd barely completed researching what a 'cash store' was (the original purpose of the old building in which the restaurant is situated)! The place had a warm, welcoming and family-friendly feel. Highly recommend.

Basically I used to work at this restaurant many years ago I knew the owners and the staff when I was employed back then roughly about 10 years ago. The staff used to be fantastic the food was amazing the place was crystal clean we made everyone feel welcome all my guests are welcome. after eating there this evening being the 13/04/2022 the white female staff member (Caitlin) the girl behind the counter is an absolute rude disrespectful staff member very unwelcoming way overpriced she served us for food that we had not even ordered but yet she said but I did repeat the order to you but in the end I thought too To let the pace lie I’ll just pay for the food because she did bring it out to the table. And when we finished we were actually going to order dessert but no one came to clear our table so we decided to just get up and leave. moving forward I would not recommend this place to any of my friends and family. the staff need a good lesson in training for customer service and actually listening to what the customer has ordered and also the table behind me also having issues but I didn’t wanna get involved with them because I have my own issues so 1 star out of five for Ruby Raja on tea tree gully 13 April 2022

Ruby's use to be the place to go. But gee it looks really bad. Very dirty. In total disrepair. Staff were not good. Clueless. Which is very sad. I wouldn't recommend going here. We will never return. Presentation of premises were really bad. Service was terrible. Food was average. Time to sort things out. 😌

Where do I start... I had high hopes for a lovely dinner out. The curries were served luke-warm at best, the table service was nearly non existant, no ambient music and the whole place was so cold that all five of us had to keep our jackets on. On top of that we had to ask for our meals as only half were served to us & we had assumed that they were still on the way out. The naan was soggy, the rice wasn't quite right either. I looked at one of the five star reviews left here & the amount of rice provided for what looks like a 2 person table, was the same amount that was provided for the 5 of us. As it was so insufficient, we had to order more rice. We ended up with a bill for $40 for two bowls of rice! I mentioned this to the staff upon paying the bill also, which was met by an apology. Really not impressed and won't be back. Struggling to find a good curry joint in the area, it appears that I'll have to keep heading into town for an Indian restaurant that takes itself seriously.

Use to visit this place years ago and brought my mum and partner a voucher for xmas..which they used for take out last night..Ordered the lamb cutlets which were small and fatty and very dry came with no sauce. Chicken tikka was also very dry small serving and no sauce. Very dissapointed .

Friendly service and excellent food. The curries have good flavour, the naan bread was cooked nicely, and the entree place we ordered was also equally tasty. The main meals are a little pricey but the flavours and taste make up for it, would definetly go again to try out different dishes as they all sounded good

Consistently delicious food and great service. Prices have been steadily rising over the years, but it is still great value. The thali plate is my go to for variety and value. The Ruby prawns are a fabulous house speciality!
I admit it is more expensive than majority of Indian restaurants. Definetly has a limited menu. It sticks to Westernized classics more than authentic Indian dishes.

HARD TO FIND A NEARBY CAR PARK
A lovely old building & it was quite cosy on a chilly winter Saturday evening.
It would have been nice to be offered drinks when we were seated.
The four of us shared some pappadams with mint chutney to nibble on while waiting for our dinner - a generous quantity but you would expect that for $5.50. More mint chutney was provided when it quickly ran out.
We then shared butter chicken, fish masala, pumpkin curry, dahl, steamed rice & some naan for dipping in the delectable gravies. All dishes were good, I can't pick a favourite.
The staff were cheerful even though they were very busy.
My only quibble is that the food could have been hotter when brought out - it seemed to go cold very quickly.

Do not recommend! Prices are ridiculous $22 for a butter chicken prices go up from there.

I had a thali plates, meh bland and boring curries not happy I paid $27 for this.

Not authentic at all. Manager was rude, we were in a group and charged me more than I had spent coz he worked out the bill wrong, should have worn his mistake but didn't instead argued with myself and husband and bullied us into paying $23 more for my meal!

You can get way better curry for cheap, the price of a curry never equates to the quality!

Parking is a nightmare 20 mins to find a park!
Richard Markus
We were charged $50 for the $27 Thali plate. Whilst questioning the amount the manager called my wife names. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.
Below average and then some...........
We decided to ignore the advice on Zomato and tried not to be discourage by the overly inflate prices so we stupidly gave it a go. Well the advice on Zomato was 100% correct, what a disappointment, every dish tasted the same, the meat was tough and chewy and the manager was just outright rude. With the prices they charge we were expecting to be blown away with flavor but instead we wished we have spent $10 at North Indian Cuisine on Hindley St. Parking is also a nightmare, there's about 10 spots for a place that seat 50 or more people so expect a walk unless you the first few there.. There's so many more affordably, better quality Indian places in Adelaide I’m not sure why anyone would go here.

Very disappointed! Service was average and slow. Food quality has dropped drastically, my saag gosht was yellow and watery??? And my bowl was so full I couldn't put the rice in, no plate, no service, no care when I said (politely) I was not happy. I used to love the food here, I'm not sure what has happened but I won't be going back. There are much nicer places to get Indian food.

Had the pakora entrees tasty and fresh. Beef Vindaloo very hot and spicy, good size serve. Friendly attentive servers, overall enjoyable, fuss free dinner.

My partner and i get to go out for dinner once a month, so we love ruby raja but this time it wasn't up to standard. everything taste watered down like i would find in the food court.

Four of us had dinner last night at Ruby Raja. We where seated in the front room with a lovely fire and we where lucky enough to have this room to ourselves. The service from the staff was great. They were friendly and professional. All four of us agreed that the food was exceptional. We thought that the price and serving sizes where good. A great night with amazing food, service and atmosphere. Will definitely be back!!!

I'm never disappointed when I go here. The service is always top notch. You feel looked after. The feel inside the place is very old style homey with it's brick walls. Great for a romantic night or a night out with friends it's got an intimate feel about it too. The food is fantastic. I'm partial to the curry plate which is reasonably priced for a night out & has a taste of all the essential curries you want to try. Little seafood & meat with an array of different tastes & your rice & naan. They were also very good service and attitude wise with my friends substitutions & nothing was too difficult. The Currry Plate was $25.50 when I went. There was plenty on the plate & it was very tasty too. Always a winner. :) I'll be back.

A great Indian restaurant with a great atmosphere, great service and wonderful food. Was a really good idea to make a booking! Will definitely be returning soon.

I came here for a large group dinner for a friends birthday. The restaurant itself is well presented, the food was delicious & the staff were very friendly! Will return!

A great place to dine in for Indian food. Ruby Raja is nestled comfortably in the foothills/north eastern suburbs in an old house & what they've done with it is quite adorable!

I've been coming here for years, for takeaway and dining in. It's got such a nice vibe inside that it's the kind of place you organise events at (birthday dinners, friend catch ups and various other things people do these days). The feel is homely but semi fine-dining and always buzzing with diners, laughter and the smell of amazing indian food.

EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I get the curry plate, because it is pretty much like a banquet for one. For $25.50, it's amazing value with 3 curries (Butter Chicken, Beef Korma & Ruby Prawn) with a side of tender and tasty chicken tikka, rice and a naan. How can you go past that?! I know you can change the options around, I'm not sure if there is an extra cost, but they easily accommodate for my coeliac sister & changed her naan to papadams.

We had a great evening with mango lassi's, a boyfriend who tried to impress with a Tindaloo and the opportunity to not only split the bill, but use multiple entertainment cards within the splt!! No one does that any more & it was lovely!

This one is a winner :)

Best Indian in Adelaide. My family had a meal at Ruby Raja tonight...I'm usually a hard marker but I give the whole experience 10/10 without hesitation.
The 1800's stone cottage/restaurant has a beautiful ambiance with a clean and rustic charm. The smells of spices and hickory smoke lightly fill the reception area which is lovely.
The waiting staff were extremely professional and very friendly without being overbearing. Our orders were taken quickly and with a smile. Even though it seemed a little busy tonight we waited less than ten minutes for our orders to arrive; our drinks arrived straight away. The dish presentation was clean, modern and classy.
We ordered three curry plates (so as to sample seven different curries), a bottle of wine and some soft drink. For $100 even I think the whole meal was an absolute bargain, plenty of food and absolutely delicious. There was no problem changing out curries from the menu for other curries which we liked better, best of all, there was no charge for the change either. Curry is my favorite food and having tasted curries all over the world from Malaysia to Dubai, plus every other curry house in Adelaide, this is the best I've had - hence why I keep coming back. If you happen to visit (make sure you book to avoid disappointment) I recommend the Butter Chicken and Chicken Tindaloo, they are exceptional.

Not authentic. Fish curry was blend. Rice was worse than home cooked rice in $10 k-mart rice cooker. Fried onion for a starter was good but who knew that would be the best dish on the table! Lassi wasn't worth to try at all. The old building was beautiful but that could not save our disappointing dining experience.

Very bad service, average food. 8 people booked for the banquet... Food was just average, no real flavours or a hint of spice. The most disappointing thing was the service! We were only offered a drink once!! Didn't clear plates for 40 mins, so we helped by piling them onto a nearby table, only to be rudely told off by a very young waiter... We were then provided no service until we asked..
Karen
Takeaway food is nice but was the most expensive we have ever had. Not good enough for the amount they charge

Heaven. Butter chicken, samosas and nuttela soft serve! What an absolute delight and a lovely warm environment.

Some of best Indian Food I have had in SA (It's without a doubt in my personal top 3) staff are always extremely helpful.
Cleopatra
Extremely over priced for the portion sizes. No exaggeration, the salad was almost as if it were 1 lettuce leaf torn into about 5.
Chicken was tasteless and had grissle through it.
Recommend to order rice as you will defiantly leave hungry without it.

Havnt had rubys for a long time. Thought we would treat ourselves tonight. Used to be great. Squid like rubber, forgot a main, got our name wrong so when my husband went to collect they made him recite the whole order back to them. Very disappointing!

Great Dinner. I had heard of this restaurant but I had never been there. Last night a friend and I had dinner at RR's and it was a wonderful experience! The heritage building and subtle decor is very pleasant to the eye. The Bengal Fish curry was delicious - not too hot or mild! The chicken curry ordered by my friend was just as good! We will go back there again!

Dinner Review. I dined here with my daughter, Sunday evening 17-02-13.
Great food. Fast, efficient service, reasonable prices.
Will definitely be back again.
This was my first visit but my daughter had eaten here previously and highly recommended the restaurant. She was spot on with her recommendation.

Dinner at Ruby Raja. I revisited Ruby Raja after a few years as I tried it when I first moved to the North East. I remember it wasn't a good experience hence haven't been back until now. I thought " okay it could have been an off night" everyone can have an off night"

I had also read some good reviews. Within a few minutes however I realised why I hadn't been back ..

The restuarant itself has a great atmosphere and was busy, it's an old building with lots of rooms. I booked a couple of days prior and we were seated in the main thorough fare from the kitchen. The entree, onion bhaji was flavourless, for instance, there wasnt a hint of Garam Masala or tumeric and the mint sauce was flavourless also.

Onto the mains.. Which was offered when I was finishing the entree- I asked if they wouldnt mind if I waited 10 minutes! While I can appreciate restuarants can be accused of slow service , my impressions were were that I was being moved on!

I am not sure what type of chicken madras we had although again it was lacking flavour and it was cut up in pieces that were way to small- medium hot? Hardly a hint of chili. To me it tasted like a below par Malaysian style chicken curry.

The garlic naan was too oily . The only high point were the tandoori lamb chops - tender and well- marinated. Excellent.

Overall however RR seemed unauthentic , "safe" Indian. Indian food in my opinion should have depth , spice and some heat. Saffron ' at the pelican plaza complex is much better as is beyond India on Kelly Road ( I recommend the lamb Dhansak!)

It is well worth the the trip to north adelaide also, harvest of India, and Arya are both excellent examples of how indian food should be in my opinion. I am looking forward to reminding myself just how good Indian food can be and re- affirming my faith.

The best Indian food north of Adelaide and possibly in the whole state. A little expensive but worth it for the taste and the cute restaurant atmosphere

Yum yum. Easily the best chicken tikka masala that I have ever tasted and the tandoori lamb cutlets.... oh the tandoori lamb cutlets!!! I am salivating just thinking about them.
I will go back to this restaurant time and time again!
Kate
Fabulous. Packed all the time so make a booking. Service faultless and attentive, a rarity for an Indian restaurant. Curry Thali amazing value and they allow substitutions and special request. 4 visits now and always great

Value for Money. Well priced meals $35 per head for a banquet, not the best Indian ive had but it wasnt bad. Overall its Nice family type establishment but a little dingy could do with an upgrade, reminds me more of an English style pub. No wow factor for me.
Forrestal & Birdbush
Thali & good price. Western indian food, but tasty on the few occasions i've been. Reasonably priced. The Thali platter is value for money both the vegetarian & non veg option..& you get to try different things on the menu.

Great as usual, friendly service, ample flavousome meals always good when we go! Best Indian in north of Adelaide delicious curry plates

My partner and I had a vegetarian banquet, which was extremely filling and tasty. Some dishes were extremely spicy - but that's a good thing! The restaurant's atmosphere is nice (the old cottage interior, although lacking a real Indian feel, is very charming). The pistachio kulfi was tasty but a little too solid. This isn't Adelaide's best Indian restaurant, but I enjoyed my experience there and would happily return. The waiting staff are very nice, too.

Not Good. Tried this place the other week with a friend as we wanted to try some new restaurant around our area. Walked in and the place was packed and we thought hey were on a good thing here. Yeah, no, It was some of the worst indian we have had - it was lacking flavour, meat was tough and we all walked out disappointed. First & last visit for Ruby Raja.

What can I say. The dishes were exceptionally delicious.

Concluding, the food was good but nothing special. I did have an, 'I could so make this at home' moment. So, in order to prove myself right (or wrong and look like an idiot), I am planning to make butter chicken sometime in the near future. Stay tuned.
