Review Local Grind - Adelaide

A couple of options are different from online menu compared to in store menu. Not a huge menu but still GF & Vegan options. Doggo friendly with water outside and a place to latch the lead. Food was good (although nearly needed a chainsaw to get through sourdough crust). Waffles looked delicious. Quite busy. Attached to The Watson which has beautiful first nations art (worth a look).

Love this place. Have been many times. Had lunch there today. This is the lamb burger, so yum. My son had the chicken burger also great. Lovely to sit outside with my dog. Very friendly place šŸ˜Š

Nice fresh bright space. Nice coffee and lots of lovely looking cakes on display. The meals were well presented and tasted lovely.

Good ambience, good service and friendly staff. We ordered the spiced scrambled eggs. very long wait to get the food, and the food was cold! (eggs are disgusting when cold).so underwhelmed with the taste and food presentation, essentially 2 eggs on a toast for $18!

Really slow service, no one in front of me and it took 10 minutes to make 2 coffees. Personally donā€™t like the flavour of their beans and my coffee was a bit too hot (milk a bit overheated). Also ordered a muffin which was nice enough. Also not overly friendly service I found. Looking at other reviews the breakfast looks pretty good though?

Like a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly the Local Grind in Walkerville has recently thrown off its shackles, glammed up and changed its name. I have no idea why new owners Paul & Lewis came up with "Lonely Hearts" but like everything else about this place it just works. Those that haven't visited for a while will be struck by how large and bright the place looks now. I visited again today and watched in envy as my wife's zucchini salad emerged. A lot of thought and love has gone into this dish which presents with all stages of zucchini from flower through to fully grown fruit. I snuck a taste when my wife wasn't looking....The sweetness is perfectly balanced by a highlight of crumbled fetta and the mint and snap peas bring with them a wonderful freshness. For me I decided to take a risk and go straight for the steak tartare... put simply my previous three tartare experiences around the world have been below average. This one however broke that mold. The meat was top grade, finely chopped not minced and with just the right amount of horseradish, capers, creme and the most wonderfully crisp shoestring fries.... simply a delight to eat, I was left wanting more. The standout however dates back to my previous visit two days earlier. Their fettucini with pork, fennel and broad beans took my breath away. Expertly cooked I was surprised by the delicately thin pasta, pork and above all the fresh dill that tied everything together and brought a wonderful earthiness to the dish. So fortunate to have this place so close to home and open Friday and Saturday nights now too.

Such a shame that Local Grind has disappeared to be replaced by this rather sad (so it's well named: Lonely Hearts ), very pared down experience. A limited, disappointing menu that compares poorly with the earlier Local Grind. The decor is rather dismal (not stylishly minimalistic, Just flat, emptyand bare. In our visit, it was also almost 'bare' of diners: only 2 tables occupied, again so hugely different from the busy, buzzy Local Grind. At least the wonderful Julia is still meeting and greeting with her charm and enthusiasm. Perhaps summer will see things warm up here, bringing it back to life.

Popped in for a quick coffee while passing through the area. Service was great but the coffee was a little weak for my taste. Served in a nice ceramic cup though :)

Im really not the type of person to complain, but makes sence why so many resturants are closing down. With such high competition around our area, we are trying to support our local community. Well! we were extremly dissapointed, Coffee was warm ( we asked for extra hot) The food we ordered was extremely dry and the so called mushroom dish came out with 5 mushrooms, over cooked with two poached eggs on dry bread and the burger.... i hate to say would have been tastier if it had came from hungry jacks. No wonder staff never asked us how the food was. Dissapointed

Great place to eat & have a coffee stop<br/><br/>Will be back for sure<br/>They make many of their own bit & pieces in house also<br/>Great job again see you soon

Service was very mixed. My friend and I received a warm welcome from a staff member at the counter, however our waitress appeared unhappy attending to us. She also wore her long hair down, which is always a turn-off for me in hospitality. Dishes were ok, yet lacked wow factor. French Toast was on the small side.

Lovely coffee shop. Staff are lovely, always up for a chat and very friendly. Coffee is exceptional. Great atmosphere and beautiful surrounds<br/>

This place has lost sight of why their there. More interested in themselves than customers. Extremely slow to get breakfast and they thought it was acceptable. Toast burnt, eggs like golf balls and a blob of old salmon on the side. Food 1 out of 10

Very slow for a quick breakfast. 30 mins for poached eggs and burnt toast. You could tell the waiters didnā€™t want to be there. A regrettable experience

Great they open on public holiday! Nice coffee and hot cross bun. It was a lovely quiet location where I could talk to my friends. Friendly staff who would give us water! Not many staff would remember nowadays esp when you are so busy. Highly recommended.

Very poor customer service. Ordered a hot cross bun and when I discovered that it was stale I asked if it could be heated up a little more. The waitress told me it had already been heated and walk away. Also there is no excuse to serve a stale hot cross bun at Easter!
Jessica Carroll
Best food and coffee! Has such a good vibe and staff are friendly and helpful! Third time here and every time it's been great! Originally from Melbourne, this place reminds me a lot of home with the different types of dishes they serve and straying away from the norm!

Itā€™s a shame because the hotel this cafe is in was fantastic, I hope itā€™s separately owned!<br/><br/>8 people order, 6 meals come out... after the 6 are half finished eating we ask were the other 2 are (mine was one of them), the waiter says ā€œI donā€™t knowā€ and walks off. We ask again when he walks past, same response! Total joke. About 10mins after everyone finished the last 2 came out without even an apology. At this point we were just laughing at the joke it was.<br/><br/>Food was maybe 4-5/10<br/><br/>And then what seemed the manager was cheerfully saying hope you guys enjoyed ur food see u soon on the way out, didnā€™t have a clue!

If your considering eating here I canā€™t advise strong enough to avoid at all costs. Complete debacle from start to finish. Order came out completely wrong and the waiter was unbelievably rude and had no idea to the point where it was absolutely laughable. The food is terrible and has zero flavour. The bacon is the worst quality Iā€™ve ever seen and would cost no more than $2 a kilo itā€™s all fat and not even cooked. How this place is in business is absolutely beyond me.
Hello. Imnikki
We were in need of caffeine to start our day before we head off to a long day of wedding celebrations and didnā€™t felt like driving around searching for a cafe. As we were staying at The Watson, Local Grind was the perfect option. Based on the latte alone, we struck gold. The latte was rich and bold, and went down a treat. Perfect temperature too. So glad we gave them a try.

Really nice food but pretty over priced. Wasn't a vegetarian option for breakfast burgers which is okay, but price was the same even without meat so maybe they could reduce it a bit.
Steve
Decent atmosphere and nice spot on a sunny day backing on to the torrens river. Stopped in for coffee and cake. Coffee (piccolo) was just average. Flavour mild, very thin texture, overall wasn't satisfying. The brownie was dry.

Yes yes yes. This is fast becoming my place to go for breakfast, coffee and baked goods. It's tucked away in walkerville and it's not a place that you would know about without word of mouth. Parking can be a bit of a pest as it is limited due to the apartment complex that it is located in. On a sunny day, the outdoor side area is a nice tranquil spot to sit and catch some rays while enjoying a tasty meal. It was recently one of the best breakfasts that I've had in a while. The fresh juice is spesh and you also need to hit up the pastry's.

I got the bircher muesli here, and of all the ones I've tried, I think Local Grind makes my favourite so far! Sometimes, bircher muesli can be very dry and bland despite the toppings, but here, it was very creamy without being soggy! The toppings added a lot of flavour and texture to the dish too, making it sweeter with a tangy-ness. The orange was also glazed which added that caramel-y crunch which I absolutely loved! The serving size was also generous, and filling!<br/><br/>I also loved the ambience of the cafe, and the little baked goods they have by the counter are super tasty too! I highly recommend trying them! The workers were also so nice and welcoming! Parking is super easy, you can park your car right in front of the cafe (you have to enter the car park through the same parking space for the apartment buildings FYI).

Called in for brunch. Put my suede bag on a chair which promptly got grease stained with whatever foodstuff had been left there. The table was dirty and I had to ask for it to be cleaned. I ordered poached eggs with sourdough. The eggs were fine but NOT the toast. Thin, brittle and burned plus not enough butter for 2 pieces. While I Ā was eating a man constantly banged and clanged furniture as he washed the floor.<br/>All flash and no class.

I ordered the Quinoa Salad (Fig and salmon salad with bocconcini, radicchio, orange, organic quinoa, lentil, and goats curd - $16) using UberEats. I was utmost impressed with the presentation of the dish. Given it was a delivery, I wasn't expecting any sort of fancy plating, but the box opened up to reveal a exquisitely arranged salad. Even the goats curd was pipped on into a neat little dollop.<br/><br/>The fig was beautifully ripe and tender, and the orange segments nice and juicy. The sweetness from the fruits paired wonderfully with the rest of the ingredients. The salad would benefit from the addition of a crunchy element; perhaps some sort of nut, but other than that I can't fault it.Ā <br/><br/>The salad was a very generous serve and was quite a substantial meal due to the large amount of quinoa. Very good value for money.

Menu on zomato is outdated but I forgot to take a photo of the new one. Some nice options available and brunch till 3pm is great. Coffee was delicious, bbq corn and haloumi fritters were OK, albeit a little dry even with a mouthful of the Beetroot relish. Sweet potato chips were delicious and crunchy with a great aioli. Parking is a bitch because of the weird one way roads and hotel parking.

Local Grind is a nice little cafe located on the ground floor of The Watson apartments in the north eastern suburb of Walkerville. My weak mocha was really weak. So weak that I actually couldnā€™t taste the coffee or chocolate. The milk was nicely steamed and the froth was really creamy but it just tasted like sweetened milk. Next time Iā€™ll know not to ask for weak.

I went to local grind recently for a brunch catchup with my mum and sister. We were able to book which was a bonus. The staff were initially quite attentive and we were able to place our order quite quickly. The juice I ordered was delicious, I tried the 'purple' juice rather than having a coffee. My sister ordered a coffee and said it was well made. 2 of us ordered the haloumi and corn fritters which were packed with flavour, crispy on the outside without tasting like they were deep fried. They came served with a salad of radish, cucumber and tossed in fresh herbs and it was a decent sized serve that filled me up. The other order was the toast with smashed avocado and poached eggs. I have to say that the portion size for that meal was quite small and underwhelming especially given the wait time for our meal. The hot chocolate I ordered was delicious without being too sickly sweet. I will come back again but perhaps mid week when the atmosphere is less hectic and the wait time for a delicious meal is reduced.

As I used to work here I know the standard the chefs try to achieve. I had poached eggs on toast with mushrooms and asparagus. My food was cooked well, and flavoursome, however my asparagus was a little too charred for my personal liking, and I'm not sure that the ends were trimmed as they tasted a little 'woody' still. My mum has a personal issue with her eggs as she hates undercooked whites, her term is 'googy'. After receiving her eggs the first time she hadn't mentioned how she specifically wanted them, so that was her fault. But then after asking for another serve and wanting the whites hard cooked and that it didn't matter if the yolks were cooked either, they still came back with another serve of undercooked eggs. So a little disappointing. But otherwise still a great place to eat if you're wanting something alternative.

Terrible coffee by rude staff. The coffee resembled a babycino not a cappuccino, while the staff were more interested in themselves than providing decent service. I will admit it wasn't all terrible, half a point for the cool fit out and cups.

Local Grind is located underneath The Watson Apartments in Walkerville. Ā There are plenty of signs from the main road and you certainly won't miss it the moment you turn into Warwick Street. Ā The cafe not only attracts the tourist or locals whom stay at the apartments, but because it is so close to Linear Park, you can easily ride and drop in for a coffee or two. Ā I love it.

Attended this place with my family for a Sunday breakfast. Initially the place looked really nice and quietly tucked away from the main street.<br/><br/>I was pretty quickly disappointed by the incompent waitstaff who brought out everybody's food and forgot completely about cutlery. I waited for a green tea which never came in spite of the fact that i asked about it 3 times and i waited over an hour for. I then asked for a juice when i was leaving which took another 30 minutes but at least i got it. The waitstaff seemed oblivious.<br/><br/>To be honest I wouldn't have minded if the waitstaff were friendly. Some were but most were pretty average. We asked one of the waitors to take a photo of our group, which he did. He was alright. When he was taking the photo I heard the barista girl with blonde hair and black rimmed glasses look over at us, sigh loudly and mutter, "Really?! This is happening!" I could certainly say the same thing about her ability to get green teas out.<br/><br/>Overall the food was pretty good but 80% of the waitstaff were average. I went to woolies afterwards and bought myself some green tea.

Love this modern looking cafe at walkerville. Very close to city and north east suburb. Plenty of parking around the cafe. It's situated ground floor of a tall apartment building. Indoor seating is comfortable but summer is coming soon, try the outdoor seating, they have the garden decorated nicely which create a wonderful environment. Soup of the day are usually very nice serve with ciabatta bread. I had the chickpea soup before and cauliflower which is absolutely to die for. The texture is so smooth and the soup is very well seasoned. Pull pork burger was very inviting. There's one hair stuck there, one of the staffs couldn't care less and doesn't seem to be very concerned but they are happy to change it for me right away. When another staff bring me the new dish, she was very apologetic. The food served is very delicious. Pulled pork was very nice with the coleslaw. Just hope that that particular staff might just change her attitude. The brekky meal served here are quite delicious too... Overall, a cafe that serves nice food and coffee. I came back then few times and staffs were good. So, will be back for future.

Won't be back. Food was very ordinary. There was no ragu to speak of on the pappardelle and the salting of the zucchini with the halomi fritters left my tongue burnt (and I LOVE salt).

The moment Local Grind opened its doors in mid September last year, I was eager to visit the new cafe located at The Watson Apartments in Walkerville offering food using SA local produce. It was also one of a handful of cafes that was opened during the Christmas holiday break so it was the perfect opportunity to make a visit there with a few friends.

Very poor service and food. Took over 30min to receive poached egg eith tomato on toast. When approached counter to order coffee and they said they have table service. The waitress then took another 10 minutes to approach us for our coffee order. It was a very quite morning on a weekday, would hate to think how poor the service would be when busy. <br/><br/>Food was very underwhelming after a long wait. Would never go here again.

Great place and good quality food, coffee and service.<br/>Would go back again

Wouldn't go back. Waited too long for service and they didn't seem to have a structure, felt like would be waiting all day...
JJ
Wouldn't go back. I wouldn't go back to this Cafe. We waited over 45 minutes for our breakfast and I got the fritters which were so bland that they weren't worth the calories. It is also very overpriced.

Very relaxing and just a lovely nook for brunch. This place is open all day and evening, and I opted for a breakfast dish for brunch- kale omelete and a juice. It was pleasant and serving sizes were good. Maybe negative reviewers are used the the super sized me meals people often get at breakfast nowadays. Not sure why this place has so many negative reviews in fact I would have thought the score would be higher because I found their service was really good and the food was lovely. I would definitely go back.

Faulty towers!. I had heard some bad reviews from friends but couldn't hep myself to try this place but what a mistake that was!<br/>The food was terrible, the eggs way over cooked, took ages and the avacado was brown. And to make it worse it was expensive. <br/>The place looked ok so maybe if they got a decent chef it wil end up being ok but don't go there until they do!

Lovely Sunday brunch. Came here with a friend for a leisurely Sunday brunch. As soon as we walked in we were greeted by the lovely (I think) owner who took us straight to a table for 2. Cute little menu and I always love a brunch joint where staff offer you coffee straight away. We didn't have to wait long to order our food and juices and both remarked on the great air conditioning, quirky interiors and general ambience. Coffee arrived soon after which we both couldn't fault, my milk was the tiniest bit burnt but still a very decent coffee. The food itself arrived soon after and was scrumptious, the sort of arrangement which at first might not seem overly large but in fact fills you up considerably. Just a small thing: the food was not piping hot, would perhaps suggest heating the stoneware plates first. Just a thought. The bacon, avocado and tomato chutney were absolutely superb, the poached eggs were cooked perfectly and were runny and full of flavour. The juice and smoothie were generous, nice and cold and had the right combination of flavors, particularly the hint of ginger in the juice. Overall, we had a very happy experience at our new local. The food and place itself definitely oozed it's own special charm and uniqueness which is more of what Adelaide needs.

Yummy breakfast. We enjoyed breakfast here on long weekend. Quite a busy spot this morning. Nice to have authentic home made produce on the menu and available for purchase. Scrambled eggs were beautiful cooked to perfection, not dry. Nice fresh juice and brioche. Will be back to try more of the gourmet specialties

The cafe is in a really nice location & the interior is done very well with a very rustic but modern feel. We sampled three of the dishes from the brunch menu & felt the portion sizes were a little small but not lacking at all in the flavour department. I also had a latte which was ok nothing to rave about. I'd give them a try if in the area plus they support local which is a real bonus.

I want to like it..... Walkerville has been crying out for good coffee for an age and I just wanted this place to fit the bill. But it doesn't. I have tried it twice but both times have found the coffee way too weak and tasteless. Also what is with the latest cafe trend of trying to get clever with sugar?? We sugar eaters don't want to use a communal bowl that anyone could have licked a spoon, we don't want coconut sugar or demura sugar......just a sachet of raw or white is perfectly fine. No need to get clever.
Dtt
Average to below average. Went here for breakfast today - had corn & shallot fritters and my partner had scrambled eggs w toast. The fritters were too charred and tough, the scrambled eggs were average, the bread was burnt. Even though the rating for this place wasn't good, I thought I would give it a try since their brunch menu looked good. Clearly I shouldn't have.
Fooooooooood
Was there for lunch today!! Great coffee ! we had ciabattas and fries so good! Will most definitely be back to work through the menu!
Bowepeep
Great juice and happy to see they have coconut milk as an option for coffees. The breakfast was super tasty definitely riding here again :)

LOVE the food. Forget the whinging of the other reviews saying the serving sizes are too small. Yes the sizes are small BUT it's quality not quantity!! Rather eat good quality food than a mound of tasteless crap as I have done so many times on my visits to Adelaide! Had the fritters and poached eggs which was soft and runny BEST breakfast in Adelaide. Was no surprise to hear the owners are from melbourne. Welcome to what food tastes like Adelaide!!! Let's hope the rest of the city catches on ;)

I'll never be back. Altough the place is really nice (the furniture custom made, all recycled, matching cups and plates, vintage cutlery, etc..) the food is average and definitely overpriced. Without considering that the waitress brought our dishes somewhere else on the first place, the brekky with 2 eggs and 2 small slices of bread (10$) and the add-on of bacon - 2 small slices (5$), left me hungry...and angry! The salmon ciabatta is a pleasure only for the eyes, small and quite ordinary. Sorry, you could do much better.
MR T
Ok... nothing special.. The place looks ok and the service is ok but the food is very average. Had the Omlette and it had no taste!!!
CrazyAboutFood
Hit and miss. Good coffee and fresh juices. However, dissapointing food. Every time we have been there eggs were overcooked. Poched eggs are served like hard boiled. Omelettes taste like cardboard as they were very overcooked. For the price you pay you definitely expect more. Hopefully they read these reviews and improve.
Lauren Bruins
Coffee was amazing and juice was nice. Food was average. First attempt at poached eggs were rock hard and second were not much better. Over priced and tiny serves.
Bernie
Avid cafe goer. Had heard about this place through the grape vine so dropped in for coffe with a friend.<br/>the decor is very cool and, at last, a cafe that doesnt have it outdoor tables on a busy street. You can actually talk to people without having to yell over traffic.<br/>the coffe was great, and I dooooo love my coffee.<br/>highly recomended. A pleasant surprise in sea of "me to" cafes.

My new favourite eatery!. Well done guys, love the fit out, love the seasonal local menu, coffee & cakes just like what <br/>We experienced though Europe. Will certainly be visiting again, looking forward to checking out your dinner menu & wine list soon.
Food Crawl
Despite of the reviews we received from our friends we wanted to try the place out. It was indeed very disappointing and the food wasn't worth the price paid. The coffee was not up to our expectations too.
Fran
Adelaide Foodie. We came here for lunch last Sunday because it was my sons birthday. We had read a good review about it and thought it was worth a try. How disappointing!! Basically it seemed the staff had a case of "I couldn't be bothered". As this was a brand new establishment you would think being bothered was crucial! We had to wait and wait and ask for everything which frankly was a real drag. Had to ASK for: service, for water ( on a hot day the water when it eventually arrived wasn't chilled and was delivered by a surly waitress), for our drinks to be brought and for our food to be delivered. I asked the manageress when the food would be served having waited about 25mins already. She offered no apology and was rude in her manner. The food wasn't worth the wait. Can't see what all the hypes about and given the annoying experience we had we won't be going back. If you value professional, prompt and friendly service don't go to this place!
Mandles
Beautiful modern interior. One staff member looked annoyed when she had to clear a table for us to sit at. Lovely breakfast menu. Eggs unfortunately were over poached. Rest of the meal was enjoyable. The sourdough bread was delicious.

We were in last weekend, Th.... We were in last weekend,<br/>The food was spot on, promptly delivered and fantastic staff<br/><br/>The food is a step above the rest, but not over pretentious, the pastries are to die for, and change daily!<br/><br/>Is this the new place to be? I vote yes!<br/><br/>Fantastic for the area, and my new "local"<br/><br/>Will see you soon
Goodfoodthyme
At 9.15am on Saturday inside was half full with many patrons looking like they were tourists staying in the hotel rooms at The Watson. There was also seating available outside and a doggie drinking bowl too! First up I ordered a green juice consisting of apple, pear, kale, cucumber and mint. The taste of cucumber was quite strong, but it was a pleasant tasting juice, not too sweet, not too sour...

We never would have found this gorgeous little cafe in Walkerville if one of our followers hadnā€™t alerted us to it. Situated at the base of an apartment building, Local Grind is certainly hidden away, but itā€™s open and welcoming to the public. The new cafe has only been open a few weeks, but already seems to have attracted a strong following and perfected an efficient service. We were promptly attended to, told about specials and served our drinks soon followed by our meals. Very impressive for a new set up to operate so smoothly. The owners have done a fantastic job of decorating with a clean, modern theme to suit their surrounding, but also adding their own personal flare. We love seeing unique breakfast ideas and Local Grind absolutely delivers on this front and whatā€™s better, you can enjoy breakfast items all day! Currently serving breakfast/brunch and lunch menus, a limited dinner service will be added in the coming weeks. Thereā€™s a wonderful selection of fresh, tasty savoury and

Located on the ground floor of The Watson Hotel, The Local Grind is a restaurant that focuses on using South Australian produce. The establishment also doubles as a providore where customers have the option of purchasing freshly baked bread or other ingredients to have at home.

When you live slightly north east of the city, you get used to having to travel a little to check out a new cafe when you have had enough of our local faves like The Coffee Barun. When I (Nathan) read that The Local Grind Cafe was opening in the recently completed Watson series of the Art Hotels in Walkerville, I was excited to check it out. I waited a little while to let them settle in before heading over and this is the result.

We arrived a few minutes late for our reservation and was met with a pretty empty cafe. I informed the waitstaff that I had made a booking and she responded that they were flat out as the morning rush had just ended and that they would get our table ready in a few minutes. Not a problem at all. It didnā€™t take long til they cleared a table and we were seated with a pram in tow as baby J was in on our lunch date too. What a great looking cafe with recycled and handmade bar stools, a funky branch light fixture, door collage as a feature wall and dangling light bulbs in the already brightly lit cafe due to the wall of windows letting in plenty of natural light from the outside. Top marks for decor already. We settled on a few beverages to start with whilst we chatted and kept baby J entertained. Soy latte in a ceramic ā€˜paper cupā€™ shaped cup ā€“ too cute!; $3.90 + 50c Green juice: apple, celery, pineapple, kale, cucumber and mint; $6.90 As you know with babies, they are QUICK! Unfortunately for us, baby Jā€™s hands were at the ā€˜grab and pullā€™ stage where he would grab and pull anything in sight and in this case, he pulled Mama Jā€™s hot pot of tea down andā€¦ SMASH! Oops! Accidents happenā€¦ and more so with babies! Thankfully everyone was fine, just a little shocked, embarrassed and very apologetic. The waitress came by and helped us clean up the mess but didnā€™t appear very happy about the situationā€¦ more so brisk, annoyed and came off quite unfriendly. Suffice to say, we were on high alert and cautious for the rest of the time we were there. Moving onā€¦ the foodā€”came out quickly after said accident. Eggs baked with capsicum, red onio
