Review Tuno Izakaya - Adelaide

Kerry J
This is not your typical Japanese restaurant - it's SO much better! The Ramen is amazing - rich and flavourful. The ala carte items are prepared fresh -within view if you choose to sit at the bar (recommended for couples and a small group of four). Beautiful, fresh, authentic - love it.

I found everything to be quite overpriced. Ramen tasted great, but I was expecting to get more than one piece of meat for the price. I don’t recommend the small dishes here, so I would only come for ramen. The fried chicken wings were over-cooked and there were only 4 for a whopping $11.

Was pretty disappointed with the ramen. It was under seasoned and overpriced. The fried squid however was amazing. I don't think I'd come back just for the ramen, but would definitely come back for the other dishes.

DO NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL. Just have a visit after 3 years, still overpriced and not tasty, even as an Asian customer who been to JP and a lot of other Japanese restaurants. Firstly, only one chief who did the grilled skewer work for the whole place, then only one waitress which is lack of service:) Also, the RAMEN is NOT in house made, it is 1000% totally u can get in Asian shop for like under $5. I had already gave this place 2 times chances, not any more. We spend nearly $80 for 2, no drinks, very disappointed ( as my first time visit)

It is the first time we came and we ordered some popular dishes: - Spicy Miso Ramen: 🙂 (why is cabbage in ramen? Even it can be chef’s creativity, I suppose it could not be in square shape) - Tonkotsu Ramen: 🙂 (not too much flavour, egg is not marinated enough, no seaweed) - Chicken wing with fish roe inside: ☺️ (very creative and unique, delicious, but too small and expensive) TUNO is good at atmosphere, decoration and charcoal grilled dishes (with high price though). Ramen does not reach our expectation. Maybe we will come back for side dish, not for main dish.

The best ramen and yakitori in Adelaide and holds its own against the great ramen shops interstate. Can always appreciate the continual improvement, attention to detail in their ingredients and dishes. My go to for ramen for years.

We tried the spicy miso, tonkatsu, black garlic tonkatsu, salmon skewers, karaage. All of them were good no complaints at all. Will definitely be back

Ramen could of been firmer (preference) but broth was really smooth and creamy, very tasty. Salmon worked quite well in the spicy miso. Karrage was the best I've had in Adelaide. Juicy, lightly battered, crispy 👍 Gyoza could of had less pork but were tasty. Will be coming back for the Tonkotsu 🥢

We tried a variety of small dishes plus the soupless ramen. All were seasoned perfectly and so delicious. A good place to go on O'Connell Street - great atmosphere. Friendly staff.

Went here a few months ago and realised I hadn’t done the review yet! So, here goes!

We arrived exactly on 6pm as I was pretty excited to try this place! We were seated at the bar in true Japanese style, I love that! It’s a pretty nice place.

I was totes looking forward to the Tonkotsu soup only to be told they had none! Sad face… Well, I had come here specially to try that particular Ramen, as this dish had been raved about by others.

Chose another soup, which was very average and missing the depth I was looking for on my buds!

We also asked for the Tako Age as my foodie mate loves octopus and yes, only to be told, they were out of that as well. As I listened stealthily to other guests ordering, there were many items missing off the menu, so quite a few gasps around the room! I hope this has now been rectified!

Had some skewers, which were nice, but I am still looking to find the perfect chicken skin skewer in Adelaide, no one has come close to the one I had in Tokyo! So my skin search continues!

Would probably return to try again and hopefully the Tonkotsu soup is waiting for me!

When we came back from Japan we had this urge to eat ramen despite having it almost everyday there. Somehow we were not sick of it. Tuno Izakaya was a fairly new player in town finding its home on the restaurant filled O’Connell Street. We knew we had to try it. We found out they hand make their noodles every morning and the menu includes Tonkotsu, Shoyu and Shio soup base along with Cold Noodles. In fact there were a couple of dry noodle dishes if you fancy a change. Although ramen drew us here they also have a decent yakitori menu because it is an Izakaya after all.

This restaurant was average - there was nothing particularly special about this place. The highlight was probably the octopus which was plump and delicious. However my ramen, although simplistic in style and taste was just that; it required more time to develop depth and flavour. We each ordered green tea ice-cream for dessert and had all our scoops on one plate to share which was bizarre. I would have preferred to have my own bowl rather than leaning in trying to scrape my already melted portion. It is a shame that despite being placed in a great location and having decent service, they fail to pool in crowds like their neighbouring restaurants do, however it is no surprise.

Will I return? Most likely not.

Everything is pricey here. We ordered two ramens which cost $15.90 each. Taste below average. Chicken karaage cost $10, again taste normal. With this price we can get better food at other Japanese restaurants.

Worth a visit but don't expect to be mind blown , probably more middle of the road . Not the best and not the worst . Ramen is ok and same with the yakitori

Alerting all Japanese food lovers: handmade ramen noodles!

Came here for a quiet lunch and was pleasantly surprised at how damn good the food was. The handmade noodles were cooked perfectly. The broth was delicate with a great flavour. Definitely worlds apart from the overly salty broth available at other chains around town. Not to mention the marinated egg. I’m drooling just remembering the flavour of the soft, barely cooked yolk oozing all over my pork tonkatsu ramen.

Tuno’s ramen tastes like your mum’s food, authentic and delicious.

Yrscore: F4,E4.5,R4

Recommended by a friend who has been living here for a long time. Tried the soupless ramen which was pretty good. The texture of the ramen al dente and was just right.

We dined at the bar, where we were facing the grill. Personally, being able to see how my food was prepared elevates the experience. Staffs were friendly too.

Will return again to try their tonkotsu soon!

Loved the Spicy Miso Ramen! We also had the Pork Ramen and Kaarage Chicken. All fantastic too. Thanks for bringing Adelaide another great option for ramen.

I now love Ramen. I didn't even know what ramen was before entering Tuno' s well hung door. My bowl was filled with the perfect amount of chicken broth, slow cooked pork, halved egg, spring onion, a sheet of seaweed, and fresh, soft noodles. There was a glistening shimmer of fat bubbling over the surface that coated your mouth with silk. And the flavors... they were present and balanced.
Get around some warm sake on a cold day.
And be prepared to bow to your sensei as you enter under the Tuno flags (I'm sure they represent Japanese culture somehow.. forgive my ignorance).
I'll be back here in a heart beat.
The low seated position along the bar over-looking the yakitori grill is comfortable, authentic and welcoming with the chef explaining the specials on entry.

The Otoshi (complementary appetiser) of raw cabbage with Kewpie mayo is reminiscent of a small local izakaya, the only thing that could have been added here was a portion of miso paste. We washed this down with Yamaguchi Pilsner, Suntory Premium Malts and Yebisu lagers.

We ordered an array of starters including Karaage, Nattou, several types of Yakitori, then finished with Tonkotsu ramen and the Shoya Ramen.

The ramen wasn't the best I have had in Adelaide, the broth that was served on this occasion needed more depth and intensity. The starters were genuinely appetising, however a tad on the small size. The service was attentive but some requests went unanswered (asked for an egg yolk to accompany the tsukune, even after being told that it was possible and would be served with the dish, it never appeared).

Overall an okay meal, with some and low points, a new restaurant doing a good job to include many authentic aspects but lacking some 'Omotenashi' (Japanese hospitality and service).

Best ramen in Adelaide? I think so!
Bucketloads of taste but yet not too overwhelmingly salty! Highly recommended and will definitely return.

I won't say the best Ramen ever but their spicy miso Ramen is pretty yummy! What is striking about this meal is their Ramen noodles itself. It's clearly made fresh and had this delicious stickiness to it ! The miso broth has a good flavour; will need to ask for optimal chilli if you like your noodles spicy. We also tried the salmon skewers which were decent. Unfortunately the chicken karaage and eggplant left little to be desired....

Just average, everything is just ok and not too bad but nothing really surprising me. Reasonable prices, simplified menu. We went to this place on one of quiet weekday (rainy) so staff was friendly, quick & fast service and food delivery to your table. However, If you are craving for Japanese ramen and yakitori then you might feel something missing

Rumours of a new ramen and yakitori bar in Adelaide, had us making a reservation as quickly as we could. One cold winter's Saturday night, we rugged up and entered the intimate venue to warm up with some Japanese favourites. With low lying bar seating overlooking the yakitori and robatayaki grill, which took up most of the space in the room, our group of 3 were escorted towards one of the few standard tables at the back of the room. We were handed menus, our glasses filled with water and 3 individual dishes placed in front of us with a complimentary starter, an amuse bouche if you please... you will have to visit to find out what is served as the surprise element is all part of the fun! It's these thoughtful touches that make you settle in comfortably and get the tastebuds excited for more.

Fantastic and authentic Izakaya. Menu isn't very large, especially types of Ramen (mostly all Pork Ramen dishes) but what is on the menu is fantastic.
Also some hard to find Japanese beers to choose from.

This place has to serve one of my favourite ramens in Adelaide. The broth is just right - i often find the ramen broth too heavy and get sick of eating it. The only downside was that they forgot my order and I had to wait another 10 minutes for my food while my boyfriend ate. Staff were pleasant and restaurant wasn't too noisy. Definitely need to book, it is a tiny place!

They have 5/5 reviews on google, which i'm guessing is written by the owners/employees. The yakitoris were quite terrible. Ramen was not great either. and on top of this they weren't cheap. If you are looking for an half-decent authentic japanese yakitori/ramen, i would go elsewhere!

Service was a bit slow, food took a long time to serve. Ramen was average for the price we paid. Quality of the dishes weren't consistent. Won't come back again.

Good vibe, good service and the ramen was good too. Portions were abit small, needed more meat and noodles. Will definitely be back for more. The price is abit expensive for the yakitori but was still delicious.

We were lucky to get seated on a busy not so busy Thursday evening. Waited a good 10mins after we'd been sat down for our menu. We chose very quickly cause we didn't have much time. Took another good 10mins to get the attention of the only waitress. After quickly giving her our orders we watched while she piss farted around doing god know what for another 15mins until it was placed in the kitchen. Still waiting..... aaahh, this isn't the service that is likened to the Japanese culture I've experienced!

Beautiful freshly made noodles. No MSG, very tasty pork. Best ramen in Adelaide. Good service and intimate setting. Some interesting sake to try.

I am sure the chef and owner not Japanese. They are all Chinese and "acting" Japanese restaurant. Ramen no flavor and some food too salty. Will not return.

This is the first ramen I've had in Adelaide that's actually made me want to return for more. The broth is moreish, the egg gooey and the meat lusciously tender. I also loved the house made noodles which were the perfect consistency. The yakitori was (as it is usually in other places) pricey but equally tasty. They could possibly come across as a little bland, but if you can resist the temptation to put more seasoning on them, they're quite good as is. They also serve natto for those who are feeling adventurous! Personally not to my liking but at least I can now say I've tried it. All up, a good place for those who are eating out in small groups or alone.

Best ramen going around in adelaide.
Great selection of yakitori, presented really nicely.

I've been back a few times. Will be back again.

Really good team.
It is the best Izakaya restaurant I have ever been to in Adelaide. I had marinated octopus for entree. It was good enough to sip a glass of wine waiting for the main. Wasabi taste was a bit strong but I loved it.

Then I tried many skewers from asparagus wrapped with pork belly, chicken thigh, lamb and squid. All were delicious and each had its own taste.

Starting from a bottle of beer as entree(?), I ended up with a bottle of wine. I also had a glass of sake for try. All went well with the dishes. What I missed on that day is noodle. I will try it next time. I recommend this restaurant for sure.

Amazing noodles and Skewers never tasted something like this before absolutely amazing. Service was good and very clean. Great value for money with the noodles served are very generous.
