This cafe is what I would call a hidden gem in Applecross. Splendid coffee and amazing avo toast. The barbecue pork banh mi was out of the world too!
Cute as, tiny and very welcoming, Penny's Cafe is a gorgeous little cafe nestled amongst shops in Applecross. I'm a little jealous of those who work near by as it's the perfect spot to pop in for a weekday lunch or brunch. Visited today with my Nanna for a quick bite to eat and we felt very at home. The interiors are stunning. Very modern and crisp. Love the coffee inspired art on the wall and the pendant lights look beautiful above the cake display and coffee counter. The menu is short and sweet, with daily specials. I was tossing up between the Bacon & Egg Sandwich on Brioche (yum) and the daily special, but decided on the special which was a Pork Belly Bahn Mi ($8.50). We also ordered a coffee and I was happy they had almond milk available. The coffee was piping hot, rich and creamy and the blend was lovely. Loved the large "bowl" style mugs they were served in. They were huge! The service was very efficient and our coffees were our very quickly, followed by our food. I made the right choice ordering the Bahn Mi. The flavours were very traditional and could have come from a side of the road vendor in Nam. The pork belly was crunchy and crisp, adding a gorgeous texture to the dish. All of the ingredients were very fresh and tasty. Such stunning presentation too. What a gorgeous coffee shop. We will be back for sure!
Best name for a cafe ;) Lovely coffee, lovely staff, lovely cafe. But they must find it difficult to offer a point of difference. It's not much of a detour off Canning Hwy for those of us doing the west-east commute and it'd be great to have a real good reason to do so. Special packed lunches to go? Pre-ordering for coffees? Donuts from The Banker (mmmm!) or delights from Little Sweet? Real banh mi rolls? Just some ideas. Hmmm...
