This place is an enigma, its set in a dark side street, upstairs in what was an office, with dark brick walls and a view of power lines over Burwood highway, yet the food is outstanding. I have eaten many steaks in my time and this is hands down the best I have come across. The owner takes great pride in choosing the best quality steaks and cooks them to perfection on his grill. The service is quick and the menu simple, meat, meat and more meat. Here comes the criticism.. I feel the price, which I think last time I went was around $60 for an eye fillet, is a little much for a venue in the backstreets of east burwood, the bowl of fries is roughly around $14 for essentially what is some McCain frozen chips, totally insane. They have done away with BYO, which is such a shame, given their winelist isnt amazing. The other thing that really disappoints is the amazing potato salad they used to serve (I think it was Croatian), has been replaced with a small Japanese salad. The things that used to make this place so great, the free roasted peppers on arrival, free sauces, free bread etc have disappeared in favour or Miso soups, Japanese salads and high prices. Last time I came here was on a Saturday night and we were the only ones in there all night. I would be really sad if this placed closed its doors, I think they have forgotten their customer base and are confused about what they want to be. I hope they go back to their roots, or I fear they may not last another year.
Brilliant charcoal grill steak - a place for steak lovers. The combination of well balanced dry seasoning and desired doneness executed to maximise the taste of a red meat, and with a master chef behind the grill - Zagar has definitely perfected their steaks. I have been dining at Zagar over a dozen times and they have not failed me. A cosy restaurant, dark yet a calm vibe. However, their speciality in steaks limits the menu choices for those who want more varieties than steak cuts. Wanting a worthwhile experience without spending too deep? Zagar.

Since having experienced a steak cooked the way it should be at Zagars I can’t bring myself to eat a steak anywhere else. Hands down the best quality meat cooked to perfection every time. A friend brought me here a while back and now this is a weekly tradition for me.
This is one amazing steak place. Quality & tenderness is off the Charts. I would definitely recommend this establishment to anyone. Will be back tomorrow for more! The Fillet steak & Scotch Fillet Sausages were amazing
Love this place. Honestly the best steaks ever. They give you delicious sauces on the side and they just taste amazing with the steak. Even the salad and chips are tasty. Lovely old and homey atmosphere to be in. It is expensive but it's totally worth it. I just wish their opening hours were more consistent. Defs recommend it !
Hands down, simply quality steak! Have not had steak like this anywhere! I can not order steak from anywhere but this place.. in three years since discovering this little hidden gem, every meal has been as good as my first if not better!

Lovely location for dinner. Very homely ambience and the owners are really nice. We got the steak which was cooked perfectly, chips were also very tasty.
A simple steak house that offers a no-frills experience - good steak, period. The eye fillet I had was meltingly good, the best I've had in a long while. Also had the tiger prawns (excellent), sausages (flavoursome) and chips (yum). The steaks probably aren't for you if you like your steaks well done. Fans of medium rare will love it. Also had a taste of the scotch fillet which was decent, but the eye fillet is the one you should be gunning for.
Ate here this evening with my family of five. Wonderful no frills easy going hosts. The prawn entree was fine. The sausages are up there with Stefans. The chips are pricey but nice. The organic chicken was a delight but the real show is the steaks. The porterhouse was beaut and the eye fillet a triumph. The coleslaw salad with light dressing cleared the palate and green salad with a fishy umami dressing went down well. All in all a great meal at a fair price of $250. We were all most satisfied. If I had a few reds I think I would be scoring it even higher.
Really enjoyed this place! Great price for generous quality of steak which was very tender and delicious (also with the sauces provided like the Japanese sauce). The couple that run the restaurant are very friendly. I suggest trying this place.

Outstanding steakhouse in a quiet local district of Burwood East. Brimming with its" rich European culture, heritage and diversity in a none-flaunting way, be amazed by what you will discover and savour.
Starting from its' amazing house sauces, fantastic warm house bread with extra virgin olive oil, we had charcoal grilled chicken and house vegetable soup for entree which are absolutely incredible.
We soon found more surprises to come - what extremely impressive was the tender and melt in mouth eye fillet steak and fabulous house chips. For people who watch their figures like us, it's certainly something too great to stop us finishing the last chip with no remorse!
Excellent salad and sides, as well as good quality house beef sausages and delicious mouth watering charcoal tiger prawns.
House chocolate mousse was a perfect finish - however left us wonder if we can ever find another restaurant better than this as we enjoyed every single dish so much.
To end on a high note, great service to match with the cozy atmosphere and beautifully cooked cuisines.

Very good steak place. The meat is very good and stands on its own without need of any sauces. Recommend the scotch fillet and eye fillet. 👍
Love Zagar's! It's my favourite place for steak. Dave is so passionate about quality cuts and always ensures he cooks our steak to perfection. The steaks are served with great homemade salad and you must check out the sausages as entree to share!
Food was amazing and we were served by a lovely lady. Steak and prawns were delicious... fries were to die for and hamburger really yummy! We will come back :)
Recommended by a friend. We walked up the stairs in a low key building not sure what to expect - we shouldn't have worried.
The food was wonderful and the lady that served us was knowledgeable and very friendly. They have a very streamlined menu, they know what they do and they do it very well.
I've been to several popular steak restaurants in the CBD and Zagar's definitely holds its own against them. I really like how this place is tidy, understated and lets the food speak for itself. Going back with a friend next week!
The quality & taste of the fillet steak & Scotch fillet sausages are off the Charts. Tender juicy. I haven’t experienced such quality in years. I would highly recommend this establishment to anyone who appreciates quality & professional friendly service. The wine 🍷 accompaniment is equally impressive.
