Review Tak Kee Roast Inn - Canberra

Trượng Nguyễn
I went to the restaurant with my friends to celebrate one’s birthday party and i think we had a pretry good meal. We ordered 5 dishes and all come quickly and have great portions, in addition to good price. The roasted ducks and pigs really blew out my mind with its crispy skin and flavourful sauce. The jelly fish salad and the special fried rice is also nice too. However, the rock salt soft shell crabs was so salty that I ended up having additional steamed rice to fit with. Besides, the octopus was not so spicy as we expected. Anyway, thank you for delicious food and i’ll come again and try the rest of your menu.

The char siu and roast duck were delicious and flavoursome. We got half a duck $20 and medium box of char siu $12. Amazing. We had them as takeaways later in the day. Imagine you dine in would be even better.

Char Kuey Teaw and Fried Rice are superb. The wok hay… you know it right away!!! BBQ Pork is okay. Duck is little bit dissapointing. Fast service, big portion for rice and CKT.

This BBQ place’s name is same as one of the very famous BBQ restaurants in Sydney for many years. Not sure if it was the same owner or branch out?! It’s Canberra quality.

I kept hearing the microwave going in the reception area, I was served some beef rolls from it, and they were really good and so much flavour! All the food was very satisfying and really well priced.

Everything fits the bill. Right price and great selection of dishes. Recommended definitely.

We were told that this is the best BBQ roast meat place around and that it had outlasted others over the years. The meats that we had were certainly very good as were the wontons that we had with our noodles. The place is a little cramped but that probably has to do with the good food and popularity. The BBQ pork was tasty with the right texture and taste. The wontons were superb; big and full of flavour. Service was pretty quick and credit cards are accepted. There is paid street parking as well as a couple of large parking facilities

The best BBQ duck in Canberra.

Tak kee toast inn on Dickson. Restaurant service from hell. Don’t go there if you are party of more than 2. No space, no waiting space. Be ready to be kicked out. Even in winter, we were waiting for our table and have menu given to order, all the sudden super rude waitress screamed across from one end of restaurant telling us to wait outside in the cold. Honestly, they gave Chinese restaurant super bad name for service. Food and price is standard, I was there previously. They have rights to have us waiting outside, but please let us know either before we enter, or nicely if after we were Waiting inside already. No need to scream across room like we are of lower class.

Hardly fine dining or luxury eating, but despite its rough edges and slightly down at heel look the place delivers.

Good food, promptly served at a reasonable price.

The place clearly gets a tick of approval from locals. The first night we tried to get in the queue was about five deep. The place isn't big and even though they've played "restaurant tetris" and squished as many tables in as humanly possible there are limited seats.

A bowl of wonton soup arrived in a bowl the size of a bucket and was hot and delicious, the roast duck was as expected and the crispy chicken was just what it said.

If I was living in Canberra this would be a regular stop

brilliant food.

had the laksa which had all the authentic flavourings but needed to be a little bit more intense, maybe a bit more fish sauce. but very impressive for a place that doesn't specialize in laksa

century egg congee was nice. Cruellers (short bread) were delicious and hot.

duck was very well presented, meat was fresh and well textured.

only complain with be lay out and lighting. i felt the really cool lighting temperature and table lay out felt a bit outdated. Food is perfect.

Okay, I probably went to Tak Kee more than I should. But honestly, I can never get enough of their roast pork, roast duck, and wonton soup. Reasonable price, always packed during dinner time, generous portions. Claimed to be the oldest Chinese bbq in Canberra, their roasts are just perfect. Other dishes are also great, although I keep getting the same thing each time.

Surprising quality for Dickson and a bargain (for Canberra) at $14.50 for roast duck with noodles and won tons. Really nice duck and a decent serving of it, with a lot of noodles and veges. Won tons arrived 10 minutes later and had a tasty filling although a rather soft exterior. Note that hours listed on websites vary wildly but the correct ones are 11am-10pm except closed Tuesdays.

Really happy with my dinner experience here. They had really friendly prompt service and I was served tea as soon as I was seated. I had a roast duck noodle soup - portion size was generous and the dish was not too salty! The oyster sauce vegetable I had for my side dish was very tasty and of a good portion as well. During my meal, there were plenty of people coming in for takeaway. Will definitely be back for a quick cheap and decent feed.

My friend recommended this to me as 'cheap and cheerful Chinese', and alliteration sucks me in every time. For dinner we ordered the special stewed pork belly, stir fried bok choi with garlic sauce and batter fried squid with egg.
The stewed pork belly was soft and delicious. It was perfectly balanced between sweet and savoury and the meat had absorbed the sauce well. This rated a 4.5.
The bok choi, although a simple dish, was done well, with crispy veges and nice garlic flavouring. This rated a 4.
The only disappointment was the batter fried squid. The squid was cooked well, but the dish needed some salt and pepper. It rated a 3.
I was also glad to see that not every place in Canberra is too highly priced.

Dropped by for dinner but didn't really enjoyed the food. I think the chef that night was allergic to salt as the congee was plain, even salted fish and chicken fried rice was plain.

The waitresses are fast and polite. Tasty rock salt pork chop and stir fried beef noodle. good portion of food. Nice place to have a quick meal.

Good prices for bbq takeaways, generous servings of food when dining in.
One thing to note, they are pretty strict with takeaway food not being consumed within the restaurant itself.
Sauces do have additional charges.

So bad. I reviewed zomato before I travelled here and picked this restaurant. My work requires me to use a credit card. Their minimum charge for credit card is $30. When I explained my situation they still insisted that even if I ordered a $12 meal it would cost me $30. Wow. Left me shaking my head.

Roast duck tasted alright but was on the cold side. The roast sausages were delicious though. Other dishes were just average. Will return for the sausages.

We came here because it got great reviews and we weren't disappointed. Our food was delicious and cheap and for a Sunday night, the place was packed and the front counter was busy dealing with people collecting their takeaways.

Rock Salt Squid. Yummo!!

Some of the best grub in town. Try the laksa, It might be a bit hot depending on your personal tastes however I ask for some more chilli.

The Pork and Prawn spring rolls are seriously the best in town. The other reviewer has no idea, Either they don't actually know what these things are supposed to taste like or they just dont like the place.

Thoroughly dissappointed. The high rating and rave reviews prompted us to try Tak Kee - goes to show how misleading ratings can be. We had the mixed BBQ and combination wonton and noodle soup. As per the title, the food was barely above average, and could have easily been made at home instead of paying $30 for it.

The soup was so salty that we actually had to ask for boiling water to dilute it! And the mixed pork and duck BBQ... this was the first time we actually had to throw out food in a restaurant. The duck was cold, chewy, excessively oily and worst of all, smelled so pungent (not gamey, just "off") that my wife and I refused to eat more than a bite, despite a voracious appetite.

The pork was edible but was identical to something I had made earlier this week at home, using Lee Kum Kee's Cantonese BBQ pork, a blaring neon sign that a dish is certainly not worth $17.

I sincerely hope this is not the 'best Chinese BBQ' that Canberra has to offer.

Tasty Gow Gee at Tak Kee. This place is great value for money and is popular with locals and foodies across Canberra. Most lunchtimes are quite busy. After weeks of prodding from fellow foodie and sympathetic fellow-dad Sir Bungle aka @JohnMalnar I finally dropped into Tak Kee Roast Inn in Dickson Canberra for some Gow Gee. My Gow Gee arrived very quickly and I realised I had failed to follow Mr Bungle’s strict advice and had mistakenly omitted the beef brisket form my order. Never mind, my Gow Gee sans beef brisket was very tasty, particularly on a wet autumn day. To feed the ankle-biter I also ordered a small combination fried rice and spring rolls. All delicious.

Authentic, delicious Cantonese grub.. When I have craving for Chinese cuisine, this is my go-to place. Favourites include roast duck, roast pork, stewed beef brisket...just to name a few. Service is quick. Flavours are bold but balanced. Reasonable as well.

This place is the balls. Quick, no-nonsense service; real asians eat there so you know it's good! Their bbq pork is THE BUSINESS, and their home made prawn & pork spring rolls make every other spring roll you've had in your life seem like a turd wrapped in toilet paper. Laksa is a bit so-so, but the balls to the wall epicness of their bbq pork makes that as irrelevant as an umbrella in a cyclone. Open your mind Quade and give it a go, you'll feel like Neo when he starts seeing the real world, green lines of numbers and shiz.

Great duck and pork. Have only had the duck and pork in the window as a takeaway. Very tasty. Will go back to actually eat in as the food looked great. Not the prettiest restaurant.
Foodpornjournal
Pretty cheap for a big bowl of noodle soup. Not enough meat but the bbq pork was thickly sliced and tasty. Big gow gee in the soup as well. Good value for $12. Not a place to take a date but good for quick and cheap food.

A great place to eat good Chinese food! Great and huge soups, pity the atmosphere and service is rather terrible. The owners came and bought some stuff from me at a retail store and I was told to come to the restaurant and get some free food. Lo and behold I was charged full price?!?! Still nice though.

Amazing food and fast, helpful service!

We tried the roast and like the roast duck and roast pork. The char siew I had (naother type of roast pork) was a bit too dry. I suppose if we have asked for cutting that has both fat and lean meat, it would taste better. But the atmosphere in the shop was already so gloomy as we stepped in and I didn't want to risk spoiling our lunch.
The only ingredient that is lacking here is probably called 'friendliness'.

Great Seafood Laksa, big enough for two to share.
Quick service. But basic setting. Always busy. Good for a quick, cheap, tasty meal.

If you feel like Asian food in Dickson that isn't Vietnamese, I'd definitely recommend Tak Kee Roast Inn. This place is sort of in the style of class Cantonese BBQ restaurants which are pretty common in other Australian cities, but aren't terribly ubiquitous in Canberra...

My experience at Tak Kee was very good. I can see why Mr Bungle raves on about it and why so many people I know have been regulars for so many years. I think the episode with ACT inspectors is well and truly in the past and I’ll happily recommend it as a place to eat affordable and tasty authentic Chinese food. I’ll give it 3 #Canberra Beanies for value & taste.

The food here is delicious, and the place is always open! Late at night, earlier in the morning, even during the deadzone on the weekends! The service is fast, you’ll get your food within minutes of ordering but don’t come here looking for Western style customer service. This is definitely a classic Asian joint, fast, delicious and cheap food. Onwards to the foods. Here’s just a couple of dishes from their massive menu and if you want something a certain way, just ask, they’ll probably do it for you. First up, the Chinese BBQ roast duck with egg noodles and steamed bok choy ($14) . Every time I go to Tak Kee I’m always thinking o

Self-advertised as the first chinese BBQ restaurant in Canberra, M and I decided to give it a go after our long drive from Sydney on a Friday night.

A and I saw Tak Kee’s golden roast ducks hanging in the window within our first week in Canberra, and a few weeks ago we decided to head there to try one. It was a Saturday evening when we chose to visit Tak Kee Roast Inn and we were lucky to get a table straight away when we arrived, as the rest of the night there was a wait for a table. When we sat down, we realised that Tak Kee is BYO so A went around the corner to grab us a beer each from the nearest bottle-o. While I waited for her to return, I enjoyed the complimentary jasmine tea provided. It was a great pot of Jasmine tea. I’m a fan of Asian restaurants were you can tell that their main focus is the food, rather than the atmosphere as I prefer to eat wit

...Anyoo, we've had a few shoutouts from Canberrans over the years about Tak Kee Roast Inn. It's in Dickson, which is close to being Canberra's Chinatown, and a handy location if you're hungry after the drive from Sydney...Tak Kee Roast Inn is a proper hole-in-the-wall ducks-in-the-window roast joint...
