Review Mr Shabu Shabu - Canberra

Rob Walker
The two of us ordered the Shabu Shahu with beef, udon noodle egg soup, prawn tempera, and vegatable tempera. All very yummy. The server was very friendly and helful with the menu explanations. We went on a Tuesday lunchtime when it quiet, but the premises was nice and would be great I expect at dinner time.

Food was barely room temperature and the beef was frozen, portions are small. I'm not a big eater but still hungry. Won't go back for sure.

My bff and I used to adore this place! However, it seems it has changed management and is sooo overpriced now 😭 Tea used to be free, and the dish came with more sides. This all used to cost the same as what the refill of meat alone costs now 😭😭😭 no spring roll, no tea with like 25% price increase 😭😭

Man, I use to have Mr Shabu Shabu all the time. They were normally pretty good. Haven't eaten for a while, and I am working from home, so order them through Deliveroo. For starters, there was no seperation of my sashimi and my main dish, so my sashimi arrived to me hot. My main dish was the Terikyaki chicken set. It is widly more expensive then what it use to be. The presentation was rather poor and the flavour use to be much better. Also, I note there was a ton of oil in the bottom, so my rice was just swimming in oil :'( Also, half a liter of miso soup with a set is a ridiculous amount. It only needs to be a cup. I assume there has been a change of hands and thus my experince. I note other recent reviews speculating the same. I'll be honest, I am unlikely to order/dine again; there are plenty of Japanese places in Canberra at much better quality for the price you are paying.

I used to come here for 5 years. Shabu shabu used to be a set meal with spring roll and seaweed side dishes, every meal was always served together with tea. I think the management changed. They now charge everything at an unreasonably high price. The cups are also not clean. This will be my last visit here.

We thought to have not eaten there because It looked quiet, but behind that wall people all the tables were booked. Tasty food, average price ($16/meal). The best part was Bonnie being our waitress. We were really impressed with her service - all 13 tables to herself. She was very sweet and always had a smile.

Omg they reopen for trading after quite a while! I miss the beef shabu set so much then I just stick to it. IT WAS JUST AMAZING!!! Ticking all boxes for me as they got fast and friendly customer service, cozy & warm dining atmosphere and most importantly, really tasty food. Everyone should go for a hot pot shabu in this freezing Canberra winter! High recommend! Will definitely com back soon ;) Keep it up guys!

Looks like its under rated, the food was delicious. Loved the shabu shabu hotpot. Will come again soon.

Perfect for a rainy day. I tried their shabu shabu while my friends got a ramen and a udon. They all came in a big portion. Remember to try their side dishes as well.

I ate at this restaurant and ordered a chicken teriyaki don, the chicken was cold when it was not supposed to be. This also occurred with another member of our group. The level of service was wanting. I will likely not return.

Had a hot pot and the food was average. Since it's near uni lodge it's more like a canteen. Also it is safer not to expect much since there ain't many Japanese restaurants owned by Japanese. Won't go unless my friend insists.

I love this place. Every time I visit I leave impressed and satisfied. The sashimi noodle dish is a work of art. So to the shabu shubus. All kinds of other things.

Shabu shabu was a very generous and warming meal, enough to share between two not-so-hungry people with a varied selection of vegies and hearty miso flavour in the vegetable shabu shabu. Tuna sashimi was also nice and fresh and the free tea is always a nice touch. Service was alright and atmosphere is good!

The Shabu set contains some meat and vegetables for the pot and a bowl of rice. The small plates here is just normal. The chicken wings is OK but he octopus ball is bad.

This place is pretty standard. The shabu shabu concept is cool but the food and service is at an average level. It's a little difficult to eat rice from the tiny square bowl and it's served at such a small quantity that it doesn't nearly fill you up.

Average food but conveniently located within ANU grounds.
I've tried quite a few items on the menu, and nothing really blows my mind.
Their rice is rather hit or miss. This time around, it was clear miss. The rice was from the bottom of the pot - clumpy, hard and overcooked. Was there with 7 other friends, and everyone had such rice.

For peeps with the iDiscount card, they are currently having a promotion where you get 10% off your total bill if you spend more than $40 in a single transaction. Do check in store to see when promotion ends.

My love of shabu shabu is no secret, but on this particular visit, a friend and I indulged in dessert there after our reliably delicious beef shabu shabu. There are three icecream flavours on the dessert menu – green tea, black sesame and red bean – all traditional Japanese dessert flavours. I picked the black sesame and my friend tried the red bean flavour. The scoops were $3.80 each and came out in a side dish-sized bowl, with one reasonably sized scoop inside. The black sesame scoop was a not-completely-appealing grey colour, but had a really fascinating savoury taste. The icecream was very creamy and at first that hid the sesame flavour, which made an appearance on the back palate at the end of the mouthful. The more I ate, the clearer the flavour became, and whilst it wasn’t as sweet as I expected, my friend preferred that to the sweeter red bean flavour. I tried a bite of the red bean, and actually thought it worked better, the sweet flavour pairing well with the creaminess. The verdict? Japanese icecream flavours are an adventure, definitely worth a try with varying sweet-savoury options!

Very average food at low prices. Food tastes quite bland and flavourless. Slightly disappointing for a Japanese restaurant. But a good place to eat for lunch.

This was my first visit. I had the prawn tempura udon noodle. The prawn tempura was oily so I could only eat 2 of the 4 on the plate. The broth was very one-dimensional and the udon was gluggy in parts. My better half had the unagi don, which was also very one-dimensional. It had accompaniments of a pickle which was ok, and a springroll with corn kernel inside. I didnt get it and thought it looked sad and waste of space. Our third diner had the beef shabu shabu and she looked like she enjoyed it. I had a taste of some broth and a slice of the beef and agreed it was the best of the 3 dishes.

So if you ever find yourself in this place, avoid the prawn tempura udon, the unagi don and go for the beef shabu shabu. I dont know anything about the other dishes and it is highly unlikely I would be going again to find out...

Convenient for a student, and good food too. The service wasn't too good but meh, the food makes up for it I guess. ☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️

Good food overshadowed by lousy service. I really enjoyed the taste of the food but the staff were really rude. The staff practically threw the food on the table and ran off. It made me feel so uncomfortable. As Chinese running a Japanese restaurant, they have managed to replicate the Japanese flavour but not the polite service.

The only decent ramen in Canberra. Not overwhelmingly brilliant however; tasty and well priced for Canberra. We will go here again for Ramen. It's also owned and run by Japanese staff. Influences more from the Hokkaido region (far North) of Japan. The quality sushi is also fresh and of high quality although not materfully put together.

The prices here are also pretty student friendly, with a meal costing between $12-$16 per person. Something worth noting is that the owners/runners aren't Japanese, but that's not a big deal for me as long as the food is good. While S opted for the teriyaki chicken, I went for a the beef shabu shabu. I also really felt like some noodles (let's be honest, when don't I feel like noodles?) so I also went for an extra bowl of udon noodles for $2. The bowl of noodles was very big for the price but I must say the noodles did taste very sour--which is usually indicative of them being not very fresh (to put it nicely). However, the shabu shabu itself was much nicer. The beef was very fresh and nice quality--very nicely marbled and the type of meat you expect to get at a good Korean BBQ or hotpot. The broth was tasty and flavoursome and I enjoyed the little sides (some wakame seaweed and a spring roll) too. I would've loved some more veggies (chinese cabbage, pumpkin and shiitake mushrooms) but I think for $14 (including rice) it's pretty good value, especially for Canberra.

Great Ramen. I decided on Mr Shabu Shabu for dinner with a friend after reading mostly bad reviews about Ka Shushi Ramen, which was where I was originally planning to go. The service here was efficient and the food came out very fast, some people have a problem with this as it can mean the food was sitting around, I however do not have a problem with this is the food is good. I ordered the pork ramen, which was a good size for under $15, my friend ordered the pepper steak set and said that it was excellent (peppery without being bitter). We were in and out in just over an hour, but we didn't feel rushed. The whole meal, with two entrees and two meals only came to about $40, which is excellent. The only down side I say was the tea we were served had a very oily consistency to it, but I'm not a big fan of Japanese tea. I would highly recommend and will be returning.

This place has all you want for a good Japanese meal! Great prices, generous sashimi portions, individual hot pots and quick service. Have been numerous times and will be back.

One of the nice dinning options around ANU, I recommend beef shabu shabu, the marbled beef slices tastes really tender and flavorful. Good portion of sashimi set also.

Sushi: fair price and yummy :). The shrimp and chicken sushi rolls are good!

Great value and portion size for shabu shabu

I really enjoyed the food and my time there. Visually I thought the interior was very nice, simple and modern. I ordered the beef set which came with a hot pot of soup (in which you place your raw meats in to cook), seaweed salad, rice, enoki, a sesame peanut sauce, tea and an asian type of roll similar to a spring roll? You can order add on such as extra meat for about $7. Now on to taste… Oh my, the broth tasted so nice! I could seriously keep drinking it (but it did get a lot more salty after adding the beef in). My negative comment would be that their choice of cutlery does make it a bit tricky to eat. I only wish they gave you a soup spoon AND a serving spoon instead of just the latter. I found it hard to drink the soup. I love seaweed salad so I’m super happy with that, and the sauce was a great combo with everything else...

Shabu shabu is a dish of thinly sliced meat and vegetables cooked in a broth. That night, I ordered the pork shabu shabu ($14.50). Everything came out together (impressive as there were 8 of us) so we didn't wait long before tucking into our meals. A black iron pot filled with broth sits on a portable burner and is lit underneath with some kind of blue gel that burns slowly, keeping your broth constantly hot. There were about 6 slices of pork meat, vermicelli noodles hidden underneath, enoki and Chinese mushrooms, cold seaweed salad, a vegetable spring roll, bowl of rice and a peanutty satay sauce. The broth is quite transparent and there was cabbage and carrots already steaming inside. Similar to a Chinese steamboat dinner, you cook your meat and vegetables in the br

Beef shabu shabu set - with a cute little pot on a stove with vegetables and tofu, the beef slices and also side dishes of seaweed salad and spring rolls

When is bloody freezing outside and you’re wanting to try something a little different, why not go to Mr. Shabu Shabu and eat a shabu shabu, which is thinly sliced meat (beef shown) and mushrooms that you cook in your own little individual mini ‘steamboat’. Super cute and warming but the only down side is that you have to wait for things to cook (shouldn’t take too long though), you have to cook it yourself and it may not completely fill you.

I have to say this up front, there was not enough food to fill us up. I was seated with 4 big boys and the 4 main dishes certainly didn't satisfy our hungers anywhere near enough. They only gave us about half a bowl of rice each and no offer of refills. The spring rolls were tiny and we only got one each. The sushi hand rolls were about 2 of those long ones cut up, to share between 4-5 people. It could just be that we were all big eaters, but every single person there said that they didn't have enough to eat afterwards. We had to go to pancake parlous for a second round of dessert to get our tummies nicely filled :)
