Review The Spit Shack - Canberra

Delicious rolls and buns with all types of shredded meats. A wonderful place to have some lunch where the staff are lovely.

Unfortunately just not worth it. We ordered a foot long roast pork roll with added crackling and gravy. It took 25 mins for our order to be ready and it was mediocre at best. While the pork was good enough, there was 2 10 cent sized pieces of crackling (which I paid extra for) and about 2 teaspoons worth of gravy (which I also paid extra for!) Unfortunately I won't be back. Sorry Spit Shak

The salt the salt ... If you love the over use of salt ( you people who ask for extra salt at McDonald's) then this place is for you... The gravy was way too salty for me... It's not lost on my that pork has a lot of salt but this is too much

Went here for the first time today in a few years and took someone for their first time. What a difference!!! Got a mixed 6 inch with crackling. Hardly any meat and even less crackling ($1 extra is a bit excessive for 2 bites of crackling). Years ago the rolls were chockers with meat!! Sorry Spit Shack but I won’t be coming here again. If I paid $5 then I wouldn’t be doing a review as the roll would have equalled the cost of $5.

Underwhelming was expecting more. Nice lamb classic roll but the pork roll had not much crackling. Good prices for a lunch stop.

If you want to grab a quick bite but is real filling. This is the place to go, especially right after wandering thru the nurseries in Pialligo.

The open space, the smell of smoke and country side, the crackle of pork from the spit roast, I love this place! I got the lamb roll with chips and gravy, moist, warm, full of flavour and filling as well! Highly recommend coming here on a Sunday arvo with the family

Ordered the shack snag... great spicy causage but the sauerkraut was raw and cold. Sauerkraut is usually served hot, having been cooked with speck and apple until slihhtly caramelized. Raw and cold, it turned the bun soggy and tasted disgusting
I’ve been a regular customer of yours for about 6 months, but I just the worst customer service from one of your employees. After calling the piallago store 7 times wanting to put an order through and nobody answering the phone, getting there and there’s only one other customer there, trying to order a egg and bacon roll for a colleague and the guy says “no sorry it’s all turned off” even though your still open for 45 minutes, I then ask if he can do a lamb or pork roll for the same price and he reluctantly says yes (thank you) and then after I pay he than says “You better watch myself”....
I’m not even sure if I want to give my colleague the food as he’s probably spat on it or something in spite.

After this experience I’m not too sure if I want to ever return or recommend the spit shack to anyone in the future.

Went there lunch time. Ok food but be prepared to wait ages. Waited 15mims for 12in chevapi. At least 12 customers who ordered after me got their food before me. Happens almost regularly.

I went here for lunch with a colleague, after getting a glowing review of this place from another colleague! The spit shack is located close to the airport, in the middle of a row of nurseries. They claim to spit-roast the meat onsite and use local produce, including bread from a local baker.
The ambience is very relaxing, customer service is good. Now for the food: you can choose between spit-roasted pork or lamb, with fresh bread and an array of extras (coleslaw, pickles, crackling etc.) and sauces (mint, chilli, ajvar etc.)
I found the meat (lamb) to be on the dry side and would have liked a bit more sauce. I will be back to try the pork.

Excellent roast pork roll with garlic and chilli sauce. Massive roll, good value at $13....

Staff were friendly and very fast service......

They don't have a large menu here but what they do, they do well. Go there on an empty stomach as their rolls are huge. Their coffee is very nice too.

I had the pork roll with gravy and applesauce. It was delish! They use good quality ingredients and are not stingy with the filling, except for the applesauce, there could have been a bit more of that. The pork was roasted well and they cut it up nice and chunky. Yummy food at a great price, and you get plenty of it! I am looking forward to my next visit.

The Spit Shack in Pialligo have the best roast pork and lamb rolls in Canberra. A big statement to make but it’s true. As the name suggests, both pig and lamb are spit-roasted on site. Located at a nursery in Pialligo (near the airport), there’s a large sign at the front identifying that you’ve reached the right place. There wasn’t much parking available – a few spots on the gravel at the front of the nursery or on the gravel at the side of the road. After parking, I noticed the man in the car next to me was sitting in his car eating a massive roll. I definitely knew I was in the right spot! Walking towards the entrance, I noticed a massive pig turning in an enclosed spit. It literally is a small shack with the menu hung up on the right (and online) and a large window where you’re greeted by staff who take your order. There are limited tables outside under the shade of the trees with a few people (construction workers and suits) already sitting down and eating by midday. Displayed on the counter are bowls of native mint and salt bush that can be added to your roll. I ordered the lamb roll ($12.90) and was asked whether I wanted mint and gravy on that. Yes please! I also ordered the pork roll ($12.90) and was asked whether I wanted apple and gravy on that. Yes please! Both rolls are foot long and no this wasn’t all for me. I was told to sample some of the pork crackling they had sitting on a plate – very tasty and crunchy. It only took about 5 minutes before my name was called out and I was back in my car to head home. Don’t expect tiny slices of pork and a bit of gravy. This roll was completely filled with large diced chunks of succulent pork and plenty of it. No scrimping here. There was just enough apple sauce and lots of gravy too. Absolutely delicious from the first mouthful. There was no crackling in the roll but it doesn’t hurt to ask if you want it. There’s no way you can eat this daintily. Expect pork spilling, gravy splattering and finger licking. The lamb

This is probably the best roast pork roll I’ve had in Canberra or even ever, it was that good! For one, it was absolutely massive, I can see why this place is such a hit. For a shade under $13 you get a full lunch, not sure if the picture does it justice, but it’s really a huge roll that made dinner an optional meal. Of course, it wasn’t just the size that made it amazing, It tasted amazing too. The meat was super tender and heavily flavoured and moist. A lot of places you get roast roll, you’ll get tough harsh pork with tiny strips of fat along it, all shredded up. Nothing like that here, each chunk of pork had a big piece of fat along with it, that just made each bite wonderful. I should mention, I asked and unfortunately they ran out of pork crackling for the day, so what does this mean? It means they normally give out pork crackling! So next time I’m getting here early!
