Review Soi Eight Thai - Canberra

We went here the other night with a group of 11 people. Order 14 main dishes and entrees and every dish came out fresh and delicious. Staff are super friendly and accommodating. BYO was a bonus and definitely made it easy when paying for everything at the end of the night. Highly recommend this place.

Food was OK. Nothing fancy. Unfortunately the restaurant that used to be here has been taken over, so no flaming angel prawns anymore. A very very limited vegitarian menu, so much so that I won't return as there really isn't much to choose from sadly.

Pad Thai was to sweet. They should provide the condiments so you can make things to your taste condiments you get in Thailand are sugar, vinegar, dried chilli and fish or soy sauce. These condiments are mainly used for Pad Thai, fried rice and noodle soup.

We have been coming to this restaurant for over 5 years.
Well before our son was born, with our then 3 year old. We have brought numerous family members and friends for nights out... good food, byo and friendly service.
Over the past 12 months the restaurant has gone down hill in timing and service. 6 months or so ago we waited 1.5 hrs for mains and another occasion 1 hour.
Never complaining as we love this restaurant.
Our son is now 2 and a bit messy but for a 2 year old very well behaved. He does not leave his high chair and apart from some loud yells of trucks or yum or no
He is extremely well behaved.
We walked in tonight at 715 to only one other table. We ordered 3 entrees and 3 mains between us and our 9 year old and 2 year old.
The service from the older lady as usual was kind.
At one point we ran out of chilli.
I asked another lady behind the bar for some and she told me she would ask the waitress.
The tone and body language used made me feel like I had done something wrong.
We continued our meal. I had to go to the ladies and when I returned I found 2 staff on their hands and knees picking up food and sweeping around our table whilst we ate.
All the while with this other staff member watching on and glaring.

We didn’t finish our meal, asked for takeaway containers.
Paid.
On the way out my husband asked the nice older lady who the other person was - she said the owner.

He apologised and said I think we upset her... she said yes you did.

This business does not deserve our patronage.
We have been here more than 6 occasions during COVID and ordered take away many other times.

When we left 2 people were in the restaurant.

I don’t deny our son threw some rice on the floor but to make us feel embarrassed after being loyal customers for over 5 years and definitely known to staff it’s sad.

We have a small business ourselves. I wish you all the best but we won’t be back.

Shaming us for rice on the floor... we are all trying to support local at this time and all struggling.

There is no way I would ever shame a client

….who recommend the spring rolls ($7.50) or silver bags – chicken mince with ground roasted peanuts, palm sugar and honey in crispy pastry ( nice but very peanutty) ( $7.50) for entree…. And the Gang Penang – a semi dry chicken or beef curry with crunchy peanuts and kaffir lime leaves $18.90.

Bit pricey but authentic . Nice spicy Tom yum soup . We really liked the green curry with chicken . Did not disappoint although a little more expensive than we expect

Very nice Thai cheap eat ! hot green curry but it is probably the best I have ever had, the pad Thai is also great

Nearly ran into Jamie Oliver's restaurant next door, booked a table an then found out from Zomato it is only 2.8, ran away

Lucky we found something nice for dinner as we rang a few places here and they all closed for holiday

Awesome!. One of the best Thai meals we ever had in a pleasant, unpretentious setting in Griffith. The Prawn salad was a killer, I would eat it every day and die happy. Seriously good food, generous amounts and lovely service. Thanks for a great meal and see you again very soon.

Soi VIII is delicious. Just had a marvellous dinner of massaman beef which was cooked so well it dissolved in your mouth. We also tried the pad med mamuang himaparn with chicken and it was amazing. Everything was fresh and the servings were more than substantial. The service was very friendly and welcoming.

We would recommend the food to anybody who enjoys good thai and you can byo from the local liquor store a few doors down.

A great restutant and out of this world food! The Flaming Angel Prawns are to die for!

If I was to find fault in something it could be the service but the food compensates for this!

Nice food, poor service. My friends and I have met several times at this restaurant for lunch because of its convenient location, reasonable prices and nice Thai food. However, we usually come away annoyed by the at times extremely poor lunchtime service. When a place advertises as being open at noon, we expect that to be the case - not 12:15 or 12:20. On one occasion 6 of us gave up and went to Narrabundah instead. After the last experience several of my friends said that they would never return because despite the very nice food the pretty young woman on duty could not be bothered clearing our table of plates - and we were the only diners present. By the look of it she was far too busy chatting with her friend in the kitchen to bother with the inconvenience of dealing with customers.

In summary - this could be a very good restaurant but the nice food, the decore and the pricing are cancelled out by the ongoing service problem.

We have previously brought the opening hours issue to the attention of the young lady referred to above, but this has not made any noticeable difference. My advice is: set your alarm clock for 10:30am rather than 11:55am.

Delicious!. This place is a little treasure, flavours are fantastic. It is however BYO, which is alright as there is a Local Liquor a few doors down.

Interesting take on modern Thai, but flavours don't quite work - more traditional would taste better. Nice atmosphere.

Fantastic, Fresh, Delicious!!!. What a fabulous gem this place is!

I love authentic Thai but I also love a decent sized meal. It is rare to satisfy the size requirement at most Thai restaurants but Soi 8 delivers!!!

Every dish we had was exceptional and I cannot praise or recommend it enough. The Penang is scrumptious and the seafood dishes all look amazing. Everywhere I looked, people were ooh'ing and ahh'ing about there dishes.

The chefs don't mind making things that aren't on the menu if you have a favourite.

Griffith shops is a little out of the way, but it is well worth the effort. Well done Soi 8!!

Amazing. Love Thai but there is a 'sameness' to the Thai food on the South side of Canberra. It doesnt have a freshness to it that you get in Sydney;s good Thai restaurants. Went to Soi for a birthday dinner I was very pleasantly surprised. The food is AWESOME. The entree tofu is delicious, the angel prawns are pretty special too. There was about 12 of us and we all tasted each other's dishes and they were all delicious. The Mussaman curry has a depth to it that I haven't tasted before. My only negative was the heat of the green chicken curry. It was for a child, now his curries hotter than anyone I know but not one of the adults could even cope with the amount chilli! As they knew it was for a child, I would have liked it a little less crazy hot. The fried ice cream was a huge hit and some of the crowd had been to Soi before and had fantasied about the fried ice cream for months.
Will go again for sure. Actually, taking some friends next week...

A REAL FIND. The food is great and it's BYO so low cost. Try the angel prawns as a starter to share. The Duck special is also very good.

Pleasantly surprised!. Decided to have dinner in Griffith and ended up picking Soi VIII Thai. The place looks inviting, cosy and smartly decorated with a pretty wallpaper on its feature wall. The staff is very friendly who makes sure that you have a great dining experience (which we did!). We ordered:
- Boo Jaa - battered crab & chicken mince served with sweet sauce & cucumber relish - very nice and tasty and didn't feel oily at all. Worth a try if you feel like something different to the thai fish cakes
- Gang Ped Yang - roast curry w/ cherry tomatoes & lychees: nice curry and loved the sourness from the tomatoes and the sweetness from the lychees blending with the duck.
- Larb (beef) - country style salad w/ beef seasoned w/ roasted rice powder, chilli & herbs: i think it was very delicious despite it being very hot (for me). We brought some home and used it for fried rice for the next day!
-Deep Fried Ice-cream with Choc Sauce: first impression? whoa! it's big. The skin was crunchy and not oily...quite good =)

Had a great dining experience!
