We returned for my dads birthday tonight as the venue we typically visit for said event is sadly closed due to covid. Service was incredibly slow perhaps due to reduced staff and the excessive number of takeaway orders which was quite irritating but the food however was once again very well done. We stuck with our regulars today but also added the green curry as the birthday boy wanted to try something different, definitely recommend everything we had.
Further update
We visited Thai Sontaya tonight after a series of events resulted in a cancelled dinner at home. The Penang curry on this occasion was absolute perfection I could literally just drink the sauce. Seems to be a place I enjoy more and more with each visit. Look forward to the next one
Update
After the resounding success of our previous visit we headed to Sontaya again last night for a family birthday. We stuck with the below tried and true favourites (note this menu is wildly out of date) but this time also added the massamum curry which was a splendid discovery. Knowing how much we’d enjoyed the other dishes previously I’d questioned whether we should bother with the massmum but it was my stand out dish of the night.
Original review
I was staying at my parents house the night before my wedding and mums great suggestion for a relaxed evening was takeway pizza and dvds. Um no Mum let’s not eat complex carbs 12 hours prior so we ended up at Sontaya Thai a delicious local restaurant I’d never been to before and ordered oh so much food we probably would have been better off with the pizza!
No regrets though it was fantastic and let’s be honest it’s not like I ever tried to diet in the lead up. The only hiccup was a hair in one of the dishes (quite entwined) but it was swiftly replaced and all of the food was sensational. My favourite was the satay chicken (we ended up ordering three!) such a flavoursome sauce I was spooning up the remaining liquid like soup!
I loved the salt and pepper calamari (note this menu appears a little out of date). While we were avoiding coconut rice, roti and noodle dishes like the plague (well the females were anyway) we went for the gang phe neang which was a yummy Penang style curry and a great sauce once again. Very pleased with this discovery

After a few weeks in Japan, I was dying for a good curry. And the ‘burbs’ can pull it off with a traditional Thai meal that satiated my yearning. We came for a celebration on a Friday night with no booking and the lovely staff managed to get us a table for 5. Sontaya is located at the top of the shopping centre in Eltham and with full patronage on the night, it has a popular following.
We ordered an array of dishes such as roti, satay skewers, chicken and cashew curry, coconut rice and more. The portion sizes were good and the rice was perfectly light and fluffy.
The staff were helpful and patient as we ordered plenty of food. The restaurant is BYO but you can also order wine as well.
Note: Wheelchair accessible. Kid friendly. Good parking nearby. Takes credit cards. Take away menu available.
thai sontaya is the BEST thai food. i wish there was a takeaway option but it’s always a great option when you want easy thai food. they have the yummiest vegan options and the staff are always friendly.
