Review Gingerboy - Melbourne

Shanae Tantram
Saturday night banquet feasting at Gingerboy was to much fun. Dined from GB Banquets. The food was incredible. We had a vegetarian in the group who was catered to on the Vegetarian banquet so did not miss out on any fun. Standout dishes from the group were the Son in Law Eggs and the Chicken Spare Ribs 😋 …I also always love a good Cucumber Salad! We did the early sitting so they needed the table back when the second sitting arrived. We were able to move upstairs to the bar to continue drinking through the yummy wine list which was lovely. The bar staff were awesome, so attentive and great conversation from both staff and other customers sitting at the bar. Thanks to the team at Gingerboy for a fabulous night!

I have never had better food in my life. It was absolutely delish. Best restaurant ever. Absolutely fantastic service from June, Lily, Nicole, Jenny, Yvan and Alex (very friendly all of them). My favourite dish was the chicken spare ribs so yummy. I would 100/10 recommend. Such a good experience at Gingerboy. Thanks!

The service is impeccable and they went above and beyond to check on some dietary requirements. The Thai moon cocktail was so good that we ended up ordering more than one. They have a good wine list as well. The fish was cooked perfectly and the duck curry was rich but very tasty. The desserts were rich and decadent but if you don't have a big sweet tooth would recommend splitting one for 2 people. Thank you for making a very memorable dining experience and we would definitely be back.

🍤 Prawn Bun 🥟 Half Shell Scallops, Pork Dumplings 🥒 Smashed Cucumber Salad 🍣 Kingfish Sashimi 🥚 Son in Law Eggs 🥩 MS7 Sher Wagyu 🧄 Stir Fried Ride Noodle Rolls, Vegan XO, Cos Lettuce, Rice 🍦Mango/Passionfruit and Coconut/Lime Sorbet Gingerboy is a vibrant CBD restaurant & bar with funky, disco-style decor dishiing up south-east Asian, street style eats. Head Chef Teage created a menu with a nod to his favourite hawker adventures. 🥟 Not only is the food SE Asian inspired but so is there killer drinks list. Even though some ingredients were missing, their expert bar staff were able to mix us up something even better. You can take a seat at the bar down stairs or upstairs for a meal, it’s the perfect vibe to catch up with friends. The service here was amazing and definitely has improved from previous visits, we felt they went above and beyond to ensure we were looked after. We ordered their Luxe Journey Banquet Menu ($100pp) and although we had some strict allergies, we were fed very well. You will not be hungry after this! 👅 The first few dishes were okay (Kingfish, Son in Law Egg, Cucumber Salad) lacked seasoning and that wow factor. The Scallops were sadly very dry and the Prawn Buns were delicious but only lightly filled leaving us craving more. 🍤 Dish of the night for me was the drool worthy Wagyu Steak, the Rice Noodle Rolls and the spicy Gyoza. I don’t feel the rice and lettuce were well thought out sides, some greens would have been better. 🥩 Now that I know which dishes I enjoy, I would probably order from the A La Carte Menu next time but the Banquet is perfect for groups who may find the menu too overwhelming to choose from. It was a mixture of shared and individuals dishes and as a party of 3 we often had 2 dishes to share which was plenty. So good for odd numbers 😉 ⭐️ 3.5/5 (Good)

Wonderful food, great follow though on small concerns, nice selection of wine, service with a smile and a good balance between chatty and professional, ambiance was unique which I loved, price was totally acceptable considering. Unfortunately I hate paying good money and having the back of my chair often rubbing the person behind me. Sorry I have been to my fair share of restaurants ... Quality, Pubs, Cheapo, Casino, exclusive I don't often get the problem and I hate it when I do. Would love also if they can supply a table card, with more details on the meal. So we ordered the $100 menu, I could hardly remember what was what by the end.

Such a great atmosphere! Bustling with conversation but the absolute best bit was the food - just delicious, especially the duck and chocolate mousse dessert!

Gingerboy never disappoints. Service was friendly and impeccable and each dish came served with a great explanation of the flavours. Pace for the banquet was perfect and we truly enjoyed the visit as both an experienced and a meal together with friends.

Great Service and Great food except for a couple of dishes. When I'm in Melbourne again ill definitely be returning to try other dishes and some of the same ones. Top dishes were Spanner Crab & Cuttlefish Bun, Soft shell crab bao, Salt & Pepper Chicken Ribs & Red Duck Curry. Not so great dishes were the Wagyu Steak (was a bit bland and tough - strange for wagyu) and the rice noodle rolls again were bland and needed more flavour.

We had the GB’s Adventure, set menu option. Each dish was fantastic and presented beautifully. Amazing flavours in each course. The staff were very friendly and engaging. I highly recommend this restaurant and think it was really reasonably priced too.

Decided to visit Gingerboy for my first night out for dinner post relaxing of COVID restrictions as I’d visited before and had a great experience. However, this time it was very underwhelming. Took a 6pm booking which was the only time available a week in advance, rushed from work to arrive, albeit 10 mins late. Arrived to find the entire experience was rushed- difficult to read digital menu, not given enough time to read and upsold on both entree and main courses. Filled up and rushed out before even given the chance to order desert. Didn’t have enough time to enjoy a proper meal.
Dishes themselves all far too spicy- even the greens! Masala curry tasteless and impossible to eat due to spice (and I love spicy food). The final insult was being forced to buy their cook book in order to meet the minimum spend. Understand times are tough but all in all this was a waste of time and money... left dissatisfied with a hefty bill.. be hard pressed to return!

I recently went to Gingerboy for the second time for a birthday dinner with my partner. The first time I went a few years ago it was a great experience but this time around it was very disappointing. Was running 10 mins late for a 6pm booking so called the restaurant ahead of time to let them know. Got a bit of attitude on the phone but told it would be okay, but they need the table back by 7.15pm. Despite the confirmation email stating they needed it back by 7.30pm. No worries, we can order quickly.
On arrival was told to look at the menu through our phones. It was easy enough to access but every time you’d click into a dish to view all of the ingredients it would then take you to the top of the web page, meaning you had to scroll back down to the section of menu you were looking at, so reading the menu was a bit of a time consuming process.
We ordered 2x entrees - spring rolls and Korean chicken. Both were great, the highlight of the meal probably, but were incredibly spicy. The waiter didn’t explain how huge the spring rolls are and convinced us to add an extra serve, so a serve of 4 spring rolls instead of the standard 3 for 2 people. We did this thinking the spring rolls were the standard smaller size you get. They were the opposite! A proper fistful of spring roll.
After the spring rolls and chicken wings and a few glasses of water, we were fairly full at this point but pushed on. Initially we were going to order just 1 main to share, chicken tikka masala. but the waiter convinced us to order a side of broccoli in oyster sauce too, saying it wouldn’t be too much food and greens would nice to add to the meal.
The broccoli was good but unnecessarily and annoyingly spicy. The chicken masala was pure and absolute fire, neither of us could eat it and we were already full from the entrees, which was very annoying. The waiter offered to package up the leftovers however, so were happy to do that. We figured we could add something at home to cool the spice level down the next day and not waste anything.
The waiter then offered us dessert and more drinks but then backtracked and said sorry, time was nearly up. No problem, tummies were full anyway.
When the bill came, the waiter then advised us we hadn’t met the $200 minimum spend...sorry, what? A minimum spend wasn’t mentioned on the phone when we booked the table. So the waiter asked us to purchase a $30 cookbook to meet as close to the minimum spend as possible. This ask was super awkward and we couldn’t say no. So purchased the cookbook and then left with a hefty bill. I also noticed there were a a lot of kitchen staff in the kitchen when I went to the toilet. which I thought was a bit weird given they had restricted bookings due to social distancing. Survey they don’t need that many people on shift?
I understand times are tough because of COVID and understand the restaurant needed the table back, but the combination of being rushed, oversold a huge amount of food, dishes that were all unnecessarily spicy (I love spicy food but it was on another level!) and then be put on the spot and made to purchase a $30 cookbook? It made the experience really sub-par, a bit tacky and not on the level of fine dining we were paying for.
I wont be returning to Gingerboy anytime soon.
Ana
Absolutely love how consistent the food is, always super delicious and great flavors! I came here for my birthday at the end of last year and absolutely loved the spring rolls I think I could probably eat 100 of them! Also the panna cotta is one of the best I’ve ever had can’t wait to come back soon :)

We normally come here for lunch but decided on the best Korean Chicken for dinner, its really busy here so book, if you dont good luck they will try but its so good its busy all the time. My wife was drinking French Rose I was on great craft beers, as we had the best Korean Chicken............just love it here. The flavours here are spicy and great but not too hot unless you ask, with great relaxed wait staff who are there to help its a really welcoming experience. Lunch is always great but now dinner its also great and then you have their coconut sundae oh yeah its good, I finished with a 12yo whiskey and we wandered into the night, a great night at a great place.

It’s not easy doing fusion. Presenting novel dishes in a gastronomic way is hard. Really hard.

Although not everything was different, everything surpassed my expectations. The eggplant curry puff had a delicious sauce, the duck curry was solid, the fried egg had a delightful chutney, the baby cos salad was delicious with both chilli and an intriguing dressing that was not too heavy. Tasted like a yogurt / mayo hybrid and I loved it.

Cocktails were solid.

Went along with a girl friend who said it was delicious the last time she was there. Unfortunately the entire meal was rather disappointing. Ordered the spring rolls which were incredibly oily, salt and pepper calamari which didn't have much seasoning and the chicken larb which was ok. For the mains to share we had the pork belly which had a good salad on the side but the pork was dry and the skin wasnt crackled. We also had the chili oil stir fry which was charded veges with some soya sauce. The service was really great and the waiter that served us took great care of us but I won't be back for the food.
Split The Bill
One of my favourites for Asian fusion with efficient service.
We opted for the al la carte meal the various dumplings were on point. My favourite duck curry which was just ok this time but was unfortunately not heated through, along with the corn cakes which were a little too dry.
Overall the kingfish sashimi and Korean bbq spare ribs were fantastic.
Just Feed Me!
Had the $50 lunch break deal - 6 dishes to share. Had a little group catch-up and thought this was the easiest option. My favourite was the Kingfish sashimi. Fresh starter with enjoyable pops of puffed rice. My least favourite was the main - the chicken masala was a little tart with the pickled cucumber and yoghurt.

Nice ambiance, busy but not too loud. Service was top notch, everyone was very polite, informative and very tentative. I had a very pleasant dining experience and wouldn’t hesitant to come back.

We went to Gingerboy for their all your can eat Yum Cha this Sunday. The food was good, although some was a bit hit and miss. The one thing that was frustrating was that the yum cha was marketed as an all you can eat 1.5hr session. However, during the session, you got certain number of plates for the table and you weren’t able to ask for more of a certain dish (as there was no menu) until the end. I didn’t mind the food but I don’t think it should be called an all you can eat. It’s more like a Set Menu or Feed Me style session.
Overall score: 22/25 or ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
in 5 words: asian fusion with fantastic service
*
Review: We had a few @goodfoodau vouchers and this is def a great option to use them! The service here is one of the best in town. They are extremely friendly, attentive and helpful - and I never had to remind them to refill my water or replace the plates after each course. To avoid food wastage, always check with them if you have ordered just enough or a little too much. They also provide complimentary rice to enjoy your mains with them.

we ordered some wine and cocktails to kickstart our indulgent evening. The Kaffir cocktail was refreshing and not overwhelmingly sweet. There was also a good selection of wines which we enjoyed.

As for the food, we loved the chicken spare ribs - crispy, tender and so full of flavour! The roasted trout was also perfectly done - it could do with a bit more sauce and oyster mushrooms to pair well with the rice.

The best part of the crispy pork dish is the crispy skin! You can really hear the crunch as we eat. The pairing of crispy pork belly with papaya salad is not new to the asian fusion scene, but Gingerboy doesn’t overfry the pork meat- this allows the meat taste to stand out!

our massaman cauliflower curry maintained the Thai sweetness to curry, but went well with crispy corn cakes. The “cucur jagung” was fried just like the ones I’ve had in malaysia. Summary - would def come back!

Taste: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ambience: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Presentation: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Price: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Service: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We had a birthday here in a private room. It read amazing. The food was punchy and every dish was just perfect. Staff were attentive and made sure every glass was full. Definitely come back for more

8.5/10! Great place for dinner if you’re looking for a light meal.
First off, great service! They were extremely friendly in explaining the menu, giving us recommendations, catering to dietary requirements and making sure all the food came on time.
For food:
The eggplant curry puff was very nice 👌 it was not oily and the turmeric yogurt sauce was a nice refreshing dip.

The son in law eggs were normal, nothing special though I liked the chili sauce and fried onions that accompanied it.

Thai red duck curry was not spicy, sweet but still packed of flavor so it was good! Would have preferred it to be more spicy but the duck was cooked well.

The roasted ocean trout was soft and tender. Again, the mushroom and chili sauce that accompanied it was the highlight of the dish! Even the crispy fish skin was good.

The best dish of the meal has to be the silken tofu with vegan XO sauce. It was made from mushroom and the umami flavor really resembled the original sauce! The crispy mushroom toppings added a nice crunch to the dish.

Would definitely return here to try the desserts as we saw the next table having it, and boy did it look good 😍 though we were too full to try.
Any vegan or mushroom lover should pay this restaurant a visit as they have done a delicious twist to some of their dishes.

Dinner last night at @gingerboymelb The whole baby snapper was definitely different as it was deboned at the table. This dish was inspired by the vibrant flavours across southeast asia. One of the hidden gems in the quintessential Melbourne laneway

Great service. Pork larb, curry puffs, pad see ew and massaman curry all delicious.

Gingerboy has been on my radar for awhile now, hearing consistent recommendations from friends and family. I got the opportunity to try out their $70pp set menu with some colleagues and thoroughly enjoyed it!

From inception of the meal, the staff make you feel welcomed and are quick to ensure all questions and recommendations are given. The meal started off with some gorgeous Kingfish sashimi which was perhaps the standout of the line up. I am usually an exclusive eater of salmon sashimi but this kingfish has genuinely swayed my loyalty- a very high recommendation from me. Fresh, juicy and absolutely perfect. The rest of the meal consisted of some Thai fusion foods such as pork spare rips, corn croquettes, dumplings, curries and a poached egg / fried type of meal. I really enjoyed the curry, which had a good texture and taste to it, the egg and also the meat spare ribs. Each dish had its own unique flavour that culminated well to provide a very fulfilling and rewarding dining experience.

A good restaurant that lives up to the hype surrounding it. A good take on Asian fusion, with unique flavours each dish!

Food: 4/5
Service: 5/5
Ambience: 5/5
Value: 3.5/5

Overall: 4.25/5

Had the lunch banquet menu today. $50 pp for 6 dishes to share - really filling, curry was amazing but the dessert platter was definitely the best.

Absolutely delicious! We ordered the ‘Quick Trip’ Banquet and the servings were more than generous and every course was just as delicious as the last. Beautiful atmosphere and good service. Would recommend!

Honestly, I cannot fault the service. Everyone was lovely and so accommodating, which is why I have given it a 3. However, the food itself was quite underwhelming.

1/5⭐️ son in law egg - unfortunately my egg yolk was solid and it didn’t taste all that good - I don’t think the flavours went that well but definitely could have done with more of the chilli jam

2/5⭐️ spring onion pancake - nothing particularly special about this dish

1.5/⭐️ stir fried choy sum - was lacking in flavour

2.5/5⭐️ korean chicken spare ribs - the sauce was really salty, but flavour was nice

3/5⭐️ pad see ew - was decent, but once again, quite salty

3/5⭐️ pork belly - the serving size was quite small and the sauce with the salad was quite salty as well. But the pork belly was cooked nicely.

Overall, I found every dish to be too salty and not very special, which was quite disappointing considering the high ratings it has.
The Jaminator
Gingerboy has been on my list for a while and it definitely didn’t disappoint. We started with mocktails which were great! The smaller dishes had some delicious flavour combinations. The son in law eggs we were told to just pop in our mouths straight and we were hesitant at first but was definitely the best way to enjoy the soft oozing centre of the egg. Dessert also did not disappoint and the flavour combinations, again, were divine. Will definitely be going back again!

I absolutely LOVED this stunning restaurant in Melbournes CBD. Very dimmed lighting, fancy & calming ambience! Great date night location!

The food here was phenomenal! I was able to capture my fizzy pink cocktail and it was soooo good & a decent size too 💖💛

If your after that “extra” experience definitely visit these guys!

As a lover of Asian cuisine we are truly spoilt for choice in Melbourne, and one of my favourite CBD destinations is Gingerboy. Down a busy laneway, this is a really classy restaurant with a subtle and elegant atmosphere. Beautifully decorated, cosy and comfortable, it really is a pleasure to dine here.

Greeted by beautifully lovely staff, we were lead to a table that had great views around the restaurant. The place was full, with plenty of couples and bigger groups alike, and the staff were accommodating to everyone. After selecting some wines and our meals, we didn't have to wait long for our dishes to arrive.

The food here is perfect for sharing. Sticky chicken, fritters, pancakes and curries were all amazing. Lots of spice with just the right amount of heat, every dish delivered in taste and textures. The sticky chicken was deliciously moreish, and the curry was sensational.

Gingerboy has earnt a great reputation and it's thoroughly deserved. It has definitely become one of our favourite destinations for amazing food, quality service and beautiful atmosphere.

You can never go wrong with Gingerboy, the food is just amazing and the service is 10/10. It is a bit on the $$$ higher side but you pay for what you get
Wasnt too impressed with the Wagu main dish i thought 58 dollars for that main was a bit excessive, there wasnt an overload of flavour
Other than that its one of my fav restaurants.

I have been wanting to try GingerBoy for a while now and opportunity arose recently to have dinner on a Friday night. I booked a table via online Zomato Booking which was fast and easy. Love it.
GingerBoy services Asian fusion cuisine, so please do not expect authentic; howver has a modern twist.

🔆LOCATION🔆
GingerBoy is located on Crossley St, a laneway street between Bourke Street and Little Bourke Street, passed Elizabeth Street. Nestled between other Asian restaurants at the upper side of Chinatown.

Very easy to locate, large fluro red signage on the side of the building.

🔆SERVICE🔆
Great service. Our waitress was very attentive and helpful.
I am allergic to chilli, so she went to the kitchen a few times to confirm with the chef what dishes can exclude chilli and helped circle on the menu those that I can consider to order.

🔆MENU/PRICE🔆
Unfortunately there were not alot of options for me to pick from, but here is what we ordered:

Passion Mocktail, $10.00
Raspberry Soda, $8.00
Oasis Water, $7.00

White Cut Chicken Salad, $18.00
Salt and Pepper Chicken Ribs with Korean BBQ sauce, $18.00
Small Rice Noodle Pad See Ew, Cloud Ear Fungus, Kai Lan, Szechuan Pepper, Ginger and Soy Dressing, $19.00
Small Stir Fried Clay Pot Noodles, Yellow Bean Sauce, Szechuan Oil, Marinated Egg Yolk, $18.00 (the Szechuan Oil and Marinated Egg Yolk was removed due to my allergy)

Burnt Honey Pana Cotta, Poached Peaches, Granola, $17.00
Roasted White Chocolate Parfait, Miso, Strawberries, Persian Fairy Floss, $17.00

🔆VERDICT🔆
Unfortunately I cannot score it more than 3 stars based on my dining experience as the price for some of the dishes were too expensive given the size portion.

The portion of the chicken salad was quite small and really unable to justify the cost of $18.00 although the chicken was very tender, it was just covered in Japanese sesame mayo dressing.

The Salt and Pepper Chicken Ribs is very tasty! Yum! But again $18,00 seemed quite steep price, if you compare with Korean restaurants that serve Korean Fried Chicken which is much better value for money.

I had no idea that I would be charged for the water, wow $7.00, so expensive!!

My Clay Pot Noodles, it was very flavour-some but it was too oily.
My Passion Mocktail was way too sweet, too much syrup. I had to mix it with water to dilute it. Very disappointing especially when it costed $10.00

The highlight for the night were the desserts. Both the Parfait and Panna Cotta was delicious! YUM!

The decor at GingerBoy is really nice, and the customer service is great!

This was a lovely dining experience.
We were a group of 6, so had to opt for the banquet. We went with the $70 one.
The waitress was attentive and happy to cater to the food allergies in our group.
We started with the cabbage dumplings, which were delicious. Followed by the son in n law eggs & steamed scallop wonton ( fantastic with a kick of chilli)
The fried salt and pepper korean ribs were yummy. Next came the mushroom spring rolls. Main course was duck leg curry, rice and crispy corn cakes.
Finally an assortment of dessert (these looked amazing but were a let down when it came to taste)
The servings were generous, we were so full by the end of the meal. Attentive and friendly service made this a wonderful experience.
Highly recommended.
Visited June 7th.

Beautiful atmosphere, friendly and knowledgeable staff and delicious food in very generous portions. I was really happy with the amount and quality of vegetarian options on the menu.

4.5/5*
*See rant below

Really great night, service was great and the food was delicious! The prawn toast and scallop wontons were the best of those I have ever had, and the chicken ribs were also unreal (lots of meat, crunchy sticky and great flavor)

All food we had was fantastic, chicken tika for main was really good size and great as well. Would defiantly return to try s few more things on the menu I didn’t get too try.

* I would deduct half a point as something we ordered for main course they came and told us they had run out of after we had ordered it. I can’t understand running out of something that’s on the menu and is not a special it’s totally unacceptable in my opinion.

Loved our dining experience here. Huge fan of Asian fusion cuisine and Gingerboy certainly didn’t disappoint. Started with the kingfish sashimi (divine), steamed scallop wantons & Chinese vege dumplings (both delicious). Moved on to the whole fried baby snapper (very good), wagyu beef striploin and the red duck curry (both excellent), accompanied with the wok tossed veges and crispy fried sweet corn cakes (which go perfectly with the duck curry, highly recommend). Finished our dinner with the dark chocolate pave dessert which was absolutely delicious. Food, ambience and service were all exceptional. Will definitely be back on my next visit to Melbourne.

The food at Gingerboy is a love song to his favourite hawker adventures.

❤️: The menu is broken down into small plates and larger shared dishes. I have been coming here for many years but last night was by far the best dining experience I’ve had. The service was great - staff were knowledgeable, friendly and attentive, new menu was excellent - full of delicious modern dumplings and street food, and the place was humming with people. This place really has it together - highly recommend.
AH
The food at Gingerboy is so great. I especially love the corn fritters and duck curry. My only disappointment was the Son in Law eggs, which I felt were quite flavourless, but that is a minor note in the grand scheme of all the great dishes I’ve had here!

Real rating 4.4 ⭐️

We had gotten Gingerboy for dinner on the Eat Club app and were excited to try it as we heard many good reviews on this place. Here’s what we had!

Kingfish sashimi, miso, avocado, native lime and white sesame oil - this was a pretty interesting dish as the kingfish sashimi was really fresh and the other elements (more towards the sour side) worked well together! The sourness of the sauce gave it a unique taste.

Char grilled wagyu in la lot and sour chili vinegar - this was my favorite small dish of the day for two reasons. Firstly, the wagyu was cooked to perfection and it was so juicy and tender resulting in a melting sensation in the mouth! Secondly, the sour chili vinegar sauce had enhanced the flavors of the beef with an extra kick of chili (not too spicy)!

Stir fried clay pot noodles, marinated egg yolk and Szechuan oil - this was actually pretty delightful to have as it was flavorful and healthy with the greens. The Szechuan oil had also gave the extra kick!

Pork belly - served with sweet and sour pineapple relish and apple and native mint slaw, this was a wonderful dish to have! The pork belly skin was crispy and the meat was so soft and juicy inside! The slaw was refreshing and went well with the pork belly!

Duck leg rendang curry, roasted sweet potato with lime and coconut - the duck was cooked well and the rendang curry was a good choice for the duck as it absorbed the flavors and was not overly spicy!

Overall, we had a great time at Gingerboy and would love to try the rest of their menu!

Nice little restaurant hidden in a lane way has the most tastiest Asian fusion dishes in the cbd. Have hasd other types of Asian food places but this place gives good service and atmosphere also gives it a relaxing feel. Nice for a chilled date night out

The dining experience at Gingerboy is centered on a modern Australian adaptation of the Asian hawker-style street market food. The restaurant's hustle and bustle, its fast-paced, youthful and dynamic environment is influenced not only by the dining culture of Southeast Asia but also by buzzing Asian marketplaces and an Asian sense of colour and fun.

One of the places where I loved every dish I ordered ranging from starters to main course to sides to dessert to cocktails. All the dishes were just perfect.
My favourite being the eggplant and split pea curry puffs.
It reminds me of an Indian Dish Baingan ka bharta stuffed inside dumplings which makes it a unique and delicious combination.
The veg options at this place are great and delicious too.
I would come to visit this place again and again to just have those eggplant and split pea curry puffs. Would highly recommend everyone to visit this place.

Please be aware that when you dine at this restaurant, you are expected to provide a donation without being informed. When we received the bill, we noticed an additional charge of $7 for 'Kitchen Garden.' As we did not know what this item was, we asked. We were informed that this is a charity that the restaurant is supporting, during the month of April. Now although this charge is not much ($1 per person), it was not appreciated that we were being blind sighted. We were not given a choice to take part but instead the decision was made on our behalf and included on the bill. If the restaurant wants to support this cause (great cause), then why is the clientele expected to contribute to that? 1. Clientele should be asked if they would like to contribute and 2. If the restaurant is supporting the cause, why are they not contributing a % of the bill? Along with the sly inclusions, the waitress was rude and judgemental. This negative review is not in regards to the amount, it is more about the fact that it was not voluntary and people are not being told before they order their meals. P.S Silken Tofu was great and filled with flavour, the rest of the meals were average.
I Love Food
Dined here for dinner & we had the 9 course wagyu banquet at $95pp. We enjoyed kingfish sashimi, scallop wonton, pork belly bun, white cut chicken, sesame prawn toast, ocean trout, wagyu beef, wok tossed veges & finished off with the signature dessert plate. I also enjoyed the kaffir collins cocktail as my drink. Every course was delicious, full of flavour & well presented. Service from our waitress was friendly. In the entertainment book so we got a decent discount off the bill. We will definitely return as the food & cocktails were top notch!

This was the second time we have come to Gingerboy - Phenomenal once again!

The kingfish sashimi was perfect. Balanced amount of flavouring that was so rich but didn't overpower the delicious fish.

We also had the waygu in a lot, coconut grilled ocean trout, crispy fried sweet corn cakes, and the duck leg red curry.

The star of the night was the combination of the duck curry and the crispy fried sweet corn cakes. Dip them in the sauce!!

Staff super friendly and efficient too, but don't listen when they say ne main and three starters is enough :p....

Great option for a stylish Asian fusion dining experience. Refined menu that offers an extensive range of dishes to suit all preferences and dietary requirements. Between two we shared the kingfish sashimi, prawn wontons, the famous son in law eggs, the blue eye cod curry and the bok choy side. All of the dishes were beautiful but for me the standouts were the sashimi and the blue eye COD curry. Very fresh and flavoursome. Despite not typically being a fan of Asian desserts we ordered the spiced ginger cake as well as the Vietnamese coffee cheesecake. Both were super tasty but the ginger cake was phenomenal in particular. Service was friendly however a little slow. This was probably due to how busy they were even for a Wednesday night.

An awesome Asian Fusion Fine dining Restaurant. I have been here 4 times and each time I leave this place happy n satisfied with a full tummy. Every dish here is unique, providing a perfect taste palette. Min spend is 70 per head.. We will come back for more xo. Ambience, Service and Presentation 10/10

Food pretty good, but have been in the past for the banquet and this time it wasn’t as good for the $$ we paid. Came to treat one of our biggest clients, wanting somewhere super professional and knowing we’d be well looked after at Gingerboy.

Very disappointed in the service. We had a table upstairs and felt pretty forgotten about. A few people at our table were left with empty glasses for quite some time without anyone filling them up (not what you want when you’re trying to impress). Also, we were told after we’d eaten that the bar was closed and we had to leave - we had never been told we had a limit on the table and it was very embarrassing in front of our clients who clearly wanted to stay. We paid the bill and as our guests were finishing their drinks one of the staff banged on the table and said “time to leave now”!
We had to rush out, leaving half glasses of wine.

Overall, very embarrassing when you are trying to treat clients to a great dining experience.

I've heard so many good things about Gingerboy and so I've been soooo keen to try it! Firstly, the ambience was very nice, dimmed-light setting and its always packed with people, always be sure to make a reservation and they're quite strict with the 2 hour seating time limit so try to be on time, we were late so we did eat quite hastily. Service was really quick though, very impressive. Staff are nice and very knowledgable! The menu itself had a very diverse selection of South-East fusion dishes which I loved!

The food was delicious! The ceviche was executed a little differently than your normal ceviche which a more paste-like lime-ish dressing, I found it really interesting, in a good way - I couldn't get enough of the sauce. The curry puffs were good but the dipping sauce was actually my favourite part, so creamy and cheese-like, we were all scraping the sauce bowl haha The tempura chilli salt cuttlefish, so light and crispy and the texture of the fish was literally melt in your mouth! YUM The red duck curry was the highlight of my night, that curry sauce was to die for, meat falling off the bone, we were so full towards the end but we were licking everything haha MUST GET!!! My least favourite dishes were the whole snapper and pork belly ... sounded amazing on the menu but I found the tamarind sauce wasn't that flavoursome and it needed more sauce and there wasn't anything too special about the pork belly except that it was braised really well. For the price we paid for it, I was hoping a little more. Also, the coconut jasmine rice I think was WAY TOO creamy for my liking, its meant to be subtle enough to compliment the mains/side dishes but it got a little sickening.

I would give Gingerboy a 3.5 not 4 but a 4 is generous. Although the food was good, I absolutely only LOVED 2 out of 7 dishes and I loved the sauces of each dish though but at the end of the day I don't want to be spending close to 300 on 2 dishes and sauces haha. Additionally, for the cost of the dishes I think I would go to other fusion restaurants for similar dishes at a more reasonable price!
Lizzie Eats Melbourne
😱Lizzie’s first impression: I’ve heard such good things about this restaurant but I was quickly disappointed.

🍩Lizzie enjoyed: I had the dumplings and the curry - the curry was the standout but still tasted like something I could buy at any Thai restaurant - the duck leg in the curry was really soft though.

🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: for its price I expected so much more from ginger boy but unfortunately didn’t have bag special kick for me. The spare chicken ribs were like any other that I’ve tasted.

🥇Lizzie rates overall: maybe I had really high hopes for this place but it didn’t reach the bar.
Jonathan Ong
mushroom hotpot, tempura cuttlefish, waygu beef were the standout dishes.
lamb potstickers, kingfish sashimi, chicken ribs, mango dessert, black sesame custard & white chocolate parfait were good too
probably wouldn’t order the blue eyed cod & green onion pancake again, not that they were bad but nothing special.
service was great.
Deniz
Incredible Asian food with a modern twist and cool presentation. I had a tofu starter, and chicken based and vegetable curry mains. Everything was incredible from start to finish. The sauces and oils were so flavoursome and really kicked the meal up a notch to perfection. Ingredients are all very fresh and delicious. Everything I tried was perfect. I can easily say this is some of the most delicious food I’ve had the pleasure of trying this year. It really left you wanting more. I am so glad to have discovered this gem and I will definitely be frequenting it again.
The service is very friendly, helpful, and personable. They’re certainly under the pump but they make sure to promptly attend to every customer. The food came out surprisingly quick, which I was really impressed with. The venue is sleek and modern.
Overall it was such a fantastic experience, I really cannot fault anything or recommend it enough!

This place seems to be average according to me the food was not worth the price still it's a good option to try indian & chinese food and deserts too, The sitting area is nice and quite too.

Ok so to be honest, if you want decent Asian food / fusion just almost anywhere else for a good meal at a reasonable price. When the first 3 courses of the banquet came out I thought ok, it’s their take on dumplings but um not a single person in a group of 6 liked it (including my ultra fussy partner). Anyhoo the chicken ribs with hot sauce was decent enough but the whole fish (2 wks old btw) was over cooked and then get this - gingerboy are not able to properly steam some white rice. What tha pho. That was definitely game over in my book.. we thought the person who normally makes the rice (or at least puts it in the cooker) must have had the day off. So basic yet so underwhelming. The curry which apparently used to be really good is now pretty avg also. The desserts were pretty good in my opinion tho. So in summation, don’t go there as there limitless other options to try.
YummyMummy
I wish there was still an option for 4.5 stars! I booked this place for my very own birthday dinner for two... and I loved it!
We were tempted by the banquet but the waiter warned we’d need to be really hungry to tackle it so we ordered a la carte. We were guided by the waiter who was good enough to tell us when to stop ordering - and I’m glad he did as we barely ate the four dishes we ordered!
We had the cuttlefish (yum but a bit oily) and the chicken ribs to start - the ribs are a MUST if you like a touch of spice. We had mains of beef cheek (yummy, tender and a bit sweet and sticky) and pork belly - which was good though a little drier than some other pork belly we’ve had our and about (and quite w small serve for the price).. served with apple slaw and pineapple.. we couldn’t stomach dessert on top of that, though peeked at the menu.. nothing tempting enough to push it!!!
Awesome place for a special occasion dinner like ours!!!
Kevin
Just another standard Asian fusion restaurant.
Food was pretty good and service was great too but didnt wow me enough for a 5 out of 5.
We ordered the 5 spice pork dumplings, crispy chicken ribs and the duck curry - the curry being the stand out.
Would rush back here but pleasant enough to come back to again
@twogoodtoresist
From interior to flavours, there was nothing at ginger boy that didn’t wow us! Every unique dish has its own Asian spin with incredible flavours and elements. Top dishes included the lamb dumplings, kingfish sashimi and eggplant samosas. We also loved the mapo tofu and mixed mushroom san Choi bao. The only dish we didn’t love were the clay pot noodles which seemed a bit bland and over priced. Cocktails are fantastic and we loved the quince crumble. We will certainly be back!
Karin
Amazing food and nice ambiance. Normally I like to eat fish, but the meat dishes here are actually better. The chocolate tofu dessert is amazing!
The only down side is that you only get 2 hours to eat/drink. Nice extensive dining wasn’t an option.
The Fo0die
Note that thefo0die.com rating is a 4.5 but in Zomato's rating system, it is closer to a 4.

Fo0die dined as a guest of Gingerboy and as such, the rating does not give any consideration to customer service.

Located in a lane way in the CBD, which at the time of dining was partially closed off for some roadworks (we had to enter the lane way via Little Bourke Street), we dropped by during our lunch break (we both work full time) to try out their new ‘workers lunch’. Designed to “get you back to work before your boss finds out”, we put this to the test.
Eating Away Melbourne
It was OK...

I have really high expectation because my friend told me its a really good Chinese restaurant with a fusion twist. The food didnt really impress me that much. We ordered chicken spare ribs, prawn wonton, son in law eggs for entree and the seafood curry for main.

To start with 3 pieces of wonton for $18. Must be some really special wonton... It was nice but I don't think it was worth $18. Chicken ribs and son in law eggs again were both just ok, nothing special. The sauce on both weren't the best I had before for those two dishes. Here comes the worst part. Seafood curry looked absolutely stunning in that bowl. I was very excited. It had some mussels some clams and some barramundi. What confused me was there were flat noodles at the bottom of the dish but they also served it with rice. Ok great I love curry with rice! So I was trying to get some sauce to go with my rice and there was none. All of the flat noodles actually soaked up the sauce. And the noodles became really soggy and not really very pleasant to eat. And $40 for that? Just find it a bit steep call me a tightass.

Didnt really try dessert in the end but may be our loss cuz other reviews seemed to enjoy the dessert.

Service was really friendly! Well trained staff.

Food here is good (and save room for the dessert plate) although its not the stand out it was in the past. Anyway its a hard pass from me due to its lack of accessibility.

What a disappointment. Firstly we had a group of 6 (including one vegan) and they made us do a set menu. I really don't think that's acceptable; most other places would ask that of a party of 10. Nonetheless on a previous occasion some other guests had a great experience so we thought we would go anyway.

We arrived 3 minutes prior to our booking and the table was not ready. We were asked by the front of house manager to take a seat at the bar and have a look at the drink menu; we promptly did so and some of sat down at nearby seats. Shortly thereafter, we were berated by the front of house manager as apparently one of the guests dining alone in the bar area had decided to leave without ordering as they were unhappy one of our party sat down at her table. This left a sour taste in our mouths - first because of his arrogant attitude, and secondly it was a little unexpected that someone would dine in a crowded bar area, and no food had been served, nor were we made aware of this fact. We are also not provided with any service to order a drink at this time.

Once we were seated we had a very enthusiastic and helpful waiter who recommended some good wines. Everyone on the table commented the food wasn’t as good as they had remembered, although the son in law eggs, the chicken ribs, the pork belly and the duck curry were still excellent. The corn balls were dry and the flavour was unremarkable. The vegan amongst us was not impressed with lots of tofu and be dessert being a predicable sorbet.

Unfortunately in the merciless Melbourne restaurant market, there are lots of similar options and given I had used my entertainment card on this visit I’m unlikely to be back any time soon. The front of house manager really sets the tone for the evening , and it was not a good one.

Service was fabulous, the waiters were so attentive and I appreciated that he made sure we did not over order. Food wise, it is not some place I would be visiting again. Mains were too salty and the desert was too sweet for my liking. Would rather pay for a place that sells actual asian food rather than the fusion version of it.

Date nights on Fridays is starting to become a tradition for me and my husband. And Asian cuisine is an extra add on to our special night out! My husband picked ginger boy and it was great! The food was authentic. The servings were beautiful! We started off with the five spiced pork and shitake siu mai with black vinegar dressing. I could literally taste all the five spiced in it. Really good! And then for main course, we ordered the yellow seafood curry with barramundi, mussels, flat noodles and giant clams. It was my first time trying yellow curry and it was differently good. And the fish, just melts! I didn’t prefer the giant clams as I thought it ruined my taste for the curry but overall it was amazing! We ordered the the fried rice to accompany the curry. And for drinks we ordered the Thai moon and scotch on the rocks for the hubby. And last but not the least, we tried the chocolate tofu cheesecake with peanut chilli praline and passion fruit. I love it when desserts have so many flavours in them that when you take the first bite the flavours just burst in your mouth and you enjoy it.
My overall experience at ginger boy was great!
The staff were really friendly! My concern was the venue as it was really compact and it was difficult to move around.
The cost was a bit pricey but I felt it was worth cause of the quality of the food.
Do give ginger boy a try!

It’s hard to go past Gingerboy’s recently launched Workers Lunch set for $27 with a main dish and a glass of wine. Especially when the dishes on offer include slow cooked beef cheek or fried chicken as options. Yessir!. When I popped by with my colleague (god I love working in the city now!), we ordered the slow cooked beef cheek with peanut chilli caramel - a hefty serve with beef that’s just falling apart and delightfully sticky and sweet, and the green chicken curry which had a nice bit of heat.
SeanyB
A nice meal without any one dish being overly memorable. Service was clinical and attentive without being overly friendly. Can’t help feeling I could find 3 equally nice meals around Melbourne for the price of 1 at Gingerboy. Nice but not a favourite.
Jammy
Gingerboy is a great little tucked away restaurant in an alley way. The decor was modern and quintessentially Melbourne. The service staff was very attentive without being overbearing. We had the duck spring rolls with this amazing sweet sauce along with braised pork as a main. It was amazingly fatty and just fell apart in all the right ways. The mains came out piping hot and had great flavour contrasts. But for me the main event was the dessert. The ginger cake was dense and came with candied ginger and icecream. My favourite above all was the chocolate cheesecake. Not only was it thick and creamy but it had poprocks or what appeared to be poprocks which was a great nostalgic surprise. Overall the food was a bit pricy and the music was just a bit too loud but the food more than made up for it. I recommend.

From start to finish our dining experience was perfect. All dishes that we ordered were simply amazing. We started with the bang bang chicken salad and the prawn wontons and they were both delicious with chilli spicy overtones to die for. For main we shared the wagyu beef striploin and the wok fried Asian greens - the beef was so tender that it melted in your mouth. By that stage we were quite full but had to try dessert. The spiced ginger cake was divine. Staff were also very friendly, especially our bartender Freya, who was very helpful and knowledgeable. We dined upstairs but you need to book well in advance if you want to dine downstairs for a more intimate dining experience.

So much food included in the Feed Me menu with wagyu beef that we almost didn't make it to dessert! Almost. Dishes included kingfish sashimi, son in law eggs, dumplings, Korean fried chicken ribs, pork bun, duck curry served with rice and corn balls, wagyu beef served with Asian veg and rice, and dessert plate.

Everything was good but no stand out dishes for me. The corn balls and Jasmine rice were disappointing. Corn balls were dense and dry - more like bread with corn kernels. Drowning it in curry sauce couldn't bring it to life. Jasmine rice was dry like basmati. Two mains brought us overboard that's for sure.. Definitely good value but go with an empty stomach and pace yourself!

After dining at Ezard & Ezard @ Levantine Hill, this was hardly going to be bad.

Phenomenal street food. Variety of complex flavours. Bang bang chicken was to die for, terrific pork bun, prawn dumplings & duck spring rolls. Hard to pick a favourite- all exceptional.

And then came the dessert platter. Every dessert on the menu including delicious banana parfait, pina colada bombe & chocolate tofu cheesecake.

Great fit out, friendly laid back staff add up to a terrific experience.

Rivals Chin and Chin and Rice Paper Scissors at the top of modern Asian dining.

But the desserts take it over the top.

I highly recommend the workers’ lunch, which is only available Monday to Friday. Great choices, the beef cheek and ocean trout were sublime. Service is quick, so perfect for the lunch hour!
Super Soba
The price is a little on the expensive side but you definitely get what you pay for. Not only was the food delicious but the huge portion is worth the price. We ordered the chicken spare ribs, duck leg rendang and wagyu beef. The dishes were great but the chicken ribs was the dish of the night. Will definitely be back to try the rest of the menu!

I've been to ginger boy a few time, never disappoints, food and cocktails remain delicious.
i was out with my group of girls and we were seated next to a table with a family, and had to remind ourselves constantly to refrain and avoid certain words/topics etc. this ruin part of our dining experience.
if you're going to have a family friendly restaurant, could you at least organise it in a way where families are on one side and non families on the other?
Gastrology
Gingerboy have just launched an exciting treat to spice up your weekday work lunch. Aptly named the Workers Lunch, this special menu is available Monday - Friday, 12pm - 2pm, and is perfect for CBD working Melbournians who would like to swap their leftover soggy sandwiches for a delicious lunch menu designed to satisfy your cravings and get you back at work before your boss finds out. The menu also includes a complimentary glass of red or white wine. All for a measly $27.

Been to this place twice, 6 years apart and vividly remember a pleasant experience on both occasions and thats a testament to the brand. We walked in on a busy Friday night without a booking and were fortunate to be seated within minutes. The staff are knowledgeable and make an effort to explain the natural experience and the stories behind the certain dishes on delivery. For entree we had the son in law egg and the masala spiced lamb potstickers. The son in law egg was a fascinating experience equally for the way we were explained how to consume the dish but the flavours you taste in your mouth with the chilli jam and Asian herbs. The masala lamb reminded me of a well made Sri Lankan lamb dish and was again made very well with plenty of flavours. The slow cooked beef was the winner which again well made with plenty of character. The twice cooked pork belly was also delivers on multiple flavours. Great experience and hopefully it won’t be another 6 years before I go back here.

GINGERBOY! We ended up here on a Friday night as a default. Couldn't get a table at another place. But we were able to get one here! All the staff were great here and offered great service. I loved the menu and the selections were great. I thought every dish I tried was well executed in technique, flavour and presentation. Personally loved the sauces
Age'n'Tise
Where can I start... Well there wasn’t really much to rave on about, quite standard Asian fare with a slight touch of complexity. We ordered the curry puffs, spring rolls, pancakes which were really spicy, the beef cheek and some Asian greens. The bar staff were really polite and helpful though the chairs at the bar were very uncomfortable which meant we couldn’t really relax, unfortunately for us there is no urge to return any time soon.

Amazing
I have nothing bad to say in this review. The food was fantastic, unreal mix of flavours and spices that made every mouthful a surprise and a pleasure to eat. My partner and I both loved our meals and were so happy eating them from start to finish, smiling like we had just won a prize.
The wait staff were so friendly, helpful and polite and the set up of the restaurant, while a small place didn’t make you feel like you were being intruded upon by others around you.

One thing I really loved was that their main vegetarian meals had an option to be made a half servings. This was great for us given that I don’t eat meat but my partner does and so I didn’t end up struggling our way through a large serve alone. Points to them for that option!

Overall, really lovely meal here last night and I will certainly be coming again (if only to have the split pea and eggplant curry puffs they were a winner for me!)
Chey_ct
Love this place. Elegantly decorated inside, service is fantastic and the food is oh so flavoursome. Great selection on the menu. It is a bit pricey but worth it and there are other places who charge as much but are not as good. Attached photo is the masala spiced lamb potstickers with green chilli & coriander relish.

Recommend by a friend and was defiantly pleased, had various dishes like the kingfish which was my favorite, to dumplings then duck. Ticked all my boxes.

Finally tried Gingerboy~ (4ppl shared)
Ordered: kingfish sashimi, son in-law with sweet and spicy sauce, confit duck curry, fish curry, wok veggie, and wagyu.
All very tasty and delicious, recommended all except the wagyu cooked too salty.

This one of my favourite restaurants in Melbourne, and flavours are exceptional, the selection of food suits all, the cocktails are signature and the ambiance cannot be beaten.
The staff are very well versed on the menus drinks.
I have eaten here about 6-7 times over the last few years and never had one issue or complaint.... I will be back and back and back!!
Worth every cent!!!!!!
Flying Forward
I'm not really sure what the hype is about - Gingerboy has been celebrated for over 10 years, and this is my first time going. It's busy, small, cramped, and therefore can get pretty loud in there.

Steamed prawn wontons - pretty tasty, and you get the texture of the prawns.
Crispy fried sweet corn cakes - unexpectedly large serving, but I'm not a fan of the deep fried battered balls with bits of sweet corn.
Twice cooked pork belly - appreciate the effort to make the skin flat, but it wasn't very crispy. The pork belly has quite a layer of fat through it. It's accompanied with a sweet tangy fish sauce and this particular dish is found in many "modern fusion Asian" restaurants.

Prices are fairly steep - $18 for 3 wontons. I eat a lot of Asian food, and for $6 per wonton I expect my mind to blown to shreds, but I can find a very similar dish for a lot less. I don't know, I guess it's about the execution and target market.

They have cocktails.

This is undoubtedly one of the best Asian/Fusion menus around. We selected the banquet for two on the advice and dishes selected by our waiter Jack. Absolutely brilliant!. No mean feat considering the other half is Vego that eats minimal seafood. Jack nailed the breach precisely. This young man is the epitome of what a good waitstaff should be. As was the sommelier & others that served us. Selected the dishes to perfection. Each coarse was centimeter perfect. (compliments to the kitchen crew) Incredible flavours bursting with freshness. Prob the two standouts , whilst it was a fine line, were the Beef Tartare & Whole fried Snapper. Wine list is well thought out with some very good local and interstate drops that shine brilliantly with the food. Definitely coming back. Well done!

Beautifully decorated restaurant. Hidden gem!
Favourite dishes: Spiced beef tartare and wagyu beef striploin. Both dishes were flavoursome!

Food: 4/5
Service: 4/5
Ambiance: 4/5

Would I recommend this place to family and friends? Definitely!

Beautiful.
Son in law eggs were textually gorgeous and should be eaten drenched in the tamarind chutney. The chicken spare ribs is the first spicy dish I have ever enjoyed as the kick perfectly complemented the delicate sweetness, rather than just overpowering my palate. The rich, creamy sauce of the duck curry (which comes with a bowl of plain rice) combined with the roast sweet potato base was exquisite, though the duck meat itself was not exceptional. Prices for the eggs and ribs are quite fair, the duck curry I enjoyed very much but its price felt high.

Service was professional, friendly and brisk. We were served very quickly despite it being busy. Plates were whisked out and replaced with fresh ones as soon as we finished a dish.
The lower dining room is atmospheric, with the black bamboo decor and colour-changing lights, but it feels a bit cramped as the room is small.
If I have the $ to splurge on a return visit, the baby snapper is on my radar.
Michael
We came here to try the banquet but had to rush as we had a show afterwards.

The food was amazing and the wagyu is definitely worth the extra money.

Quite busy on a Thursday night. Ordered the bao, fermented tofu, cuttlefish and duck leg curry. Found some of the dishes quite salty- the tofu and cuttlefish. Pork in bao had nice flavour but bun was a little doughy. Duck curry was creamy but tasted a bit bland and duck was very dry. Service was ok.
Sophie
Came here with my husband and another couple as it was in the entertainment guide. The food was divine and full of flavour. We tried a variety of dishes, one of the stand out dishes was the son in law eggs, absolutely delicious. Will definitely return. I recommend booking beforehand as they get pretty busy.

Came here with my partner for dinner. We had a booking, and upon arrival we were greeted by their friendly staff and seated.
We ordered their $85 banquette, which contained three entrees, three mains and one dessert platter.
Their banquette exhibited exciting Asian flavours. If say their duck stood out the most to me.
For what we paid for, it was worth every cent! From the quality of food, to their overall service. Their staff were prompt, attention and very helpful when providing menu advice. The restaurant itself had its own unique, sophisticated and chill vibe. The overall cleanliness was good, from entrance, to the table, utensils and their restrooms. The restaurant is not only great for couples and friends, but also good for families.

Love the dining room fit out very different to most restaurants in the area. Service is on point as well as there food and drinks. Love the cocktails and highly recommend the banquet menu.

Gingerboy can be hard to get into, its usually booked 2 weeks in advance or so, so the first tip is to make sure you’re organised and book in advance (for the restaurant). We had the best experience from walking in the door to the time it was to leave. The staff were attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. The atmosphere was intimate and perfect for good conversation over amazing food. We selected the banquet option and were not disappointed, for $85.00 each it was very good value for money and we left feeling extremely full and satisfied. The cuttle fish, fritters, dumplings and yellow curry were simply mouth watering. Every dish was fantastic but these were the highlights and to compliment the evening we finished with a small dessert board which was also very tasty. Great cocktails, extensive drinks menu and in an easily accessed spot in Melbourne - nothing but praise for Gingerboy!
Maria
So disappointed. Prawn Dumplings undercooked with no flavour. Crab salad with almost zero crab and the crab that was there tasted like chlorine. Seafood curry had about 6 shells and a bunch of noodles. Overpriced and over hyped. Very underwhelming.

Ambience:4/5
Food:3.5/5
Staff:4/5
Will I return: No

Came here for dinner with a girlfriend one Thursday night. It was fairly busy for a Thursday night. Staff were prompt to seat us at our table. We sat upstairs by the couch. However, it was evident that the little stools were uncomfortable to sit on. Two other groups sitting next to us had everyone all squished on the couch as no one wanted to sit on the uncomfortable stools.

The menu look promising and our starters of son in law eggs and pork baos tasted great. The only down side to them was that the bao was really really small and for $6 a piece, it’s a bit pricey. The mains weren’t as good, our seafood curry tasted sour and had 3 4cm sized fish pieces with 3 mussels and 3 clams in it for $36. We were advised we could order normal rice and there was only coconut rice on the menu. We really didn’t like the rice as it was sloppy and wet. It had been soaked with way too much coconut milk and tasted like a dessert more than anything. The Chinese cabbage side was burnt and tasted bitter which was disappointing. For the price and from reviews I would’ve expected a bit more so I definitely won’t be returning again unfortunately.

Booked dinner at Gingerboy with my husband to celebrate my birthday approx 1.5 weeks prior. We were very excited to try the food. Arrived at venue and we were asked to go upstairs to our table which just so happened to be at the bar, sitting uncomfortably on stools. Very annoying considering there were plenty of tables available while we were there. Ordered the banquet, the food was nice. Nothing spectacular other than the chilli chicken ribs. While we were there, a group of approx 20 women were sitting behind the tassel curtained area right near us. They were EXTREMELY loud...and by extremely loud I mean ridiculously rowdy to the point where everyone upstairs turned to stare at them which only just spurred them on to become louder. The waiters seemed embarrassed about it and apologised profusely. They offered us a glass of free champagne however I continued to strain to hear what my husband was saying to me. Not an enjoyable atmosphere at all. The group should have been told to quieten down to respect the other patrons. Offering us a free drink isn’t going to fix the problem, it’s only going to make us more drunk. I was also pretty disappointed that my birthday celebration wasn’t recognised at all, no candle on the dessert or anything simple like that. Bit of a downer to be honest.

My friends and I had a very special night here. The service was outstanding. The food was excellent and flavoursome. We were especially impressed with the mixed mushroom san choi bao. Great cocktails too.

As we came here spontaneously one night, we had to sit at the bar as the rest of the restaurant was fully booked. This was fine with us as this was a highly recommended restaurant. The atmosphere was quite classy but personally I did find it a little dark. The famous Son in law eggs weren't exactly what we expected them to be as it was a little chewy, not exactly sure if that is how it's suppose to be. But as the dishes came things got better. The Gingerboy slaw was quite fresh and aromatic. The fish was nice, could've been more crunchy but flavours were good. The ms7 Wagyu Beef Strip Loin was definitely the winner for the night, cooked to perfection with great mushrooms to go with, delicious. Overall was a nice meal, but price was a little high for what we had.

My boyfriend brought me to Gingerboy for a nice date night. I have heard my friend raving on about how fabulous Gingerboy is and was really looking forward to my dinner.
We were seated upstairs against the wall in the booth. It was cosy and fabulous! Beautiful ambience and decor - made me feel fancy af.
My boyfriend and I ordered the Mushroom San Choy Bao, the Chili Salt Silken Tofu bites, the Stir Fried Bamboo and Fungas and the wok tossed Asian greens. We shared this all and it was plenty of food, I left Gingerboy with a food baby! As a vegan, I was so stoked to have a selection of delicious sounding dishes to choose from. Our food came out in a timely manner and looked absolutely amazing - like I am talking instagram food snaps level of amazing! Every dish tasted amazing, was well balanced and had yummy sauces! The service from staff was amazing, I felt comfortable and welcome. There is a great selection of cocktails - I tried a spicy apple rum one, I forgot the name of... tasted like warm apple pie!!! I don’t think I could put into words how fabulous a dining experience this was for my boyfriend and I. It made date night very special! I cannot wait to come back .... hopefully to some more vegan food on the menu ;)

I understand we're at the Australian open and we have to consider the inflation of food costs, but charging 15 bucks for 3 regular sized dumplings, irrespective of the ingredients is overpriced. The "Wagyu" beef dumplings were extremely underwhelming. Pork bun was also 15 dollars and was filled with coleslaw and herbs, with 2nm of pork somewhere in there. Chicken ribs were awesome and the closest thing to being worth 15 bucks we ate.

Been wanting to try this place for a while now and finally got the chance for a birthday gathering. The venue itself is very modern but very noisy. The menu is modern asian fusion. The dishes are more on the sweeter side but seem to balance it with the spice flavours of the dishes. Go with the set menu lots of variety and heaps of food. The only really let down is the service and the staff knowledge of the menu. Otherwise the food made up for the service.

I’ve dinned at Ezard before and I was really impressed, this time I decided to try gingerboy (cheaper n less formal than Ezard) with my friends. The food and open kitchen was great, we love the large selection of drinks 😁😁

Highlights - we tried the ‘Feed Me’ menu selection, no idea what we’ll get served very interesting experience. Good and varied selection of dishes, but the best was the dessert ❤️ very interesting desserts. If you’re not into herbal/ spice in your dessert you need to inform the waiter/ waitress!!

I dont mind the dessert with basil gelato, but the red velvet (?) with chilli cream (not spicy or hot but i hate the taste of chilli) ruined my favourite time of meal (dessert time) 😱😭 I wasn’t expecting herb or chilli in my dessert so we didn’t inform them 😞

Downside - bit crowded and loud when it’s packed.

Ginger boy is located on Crossley Street off Little Bourke and is mostly well rated by a lot of our friends. The restaurant is beautiful, has a great atmosphere, a classy decor and lovely, helpful staff. Being with a group of 8, we had the banquet menu with wagyu beef shared dish $90.0pp. The entree swordfish and wagyu were definitely the highlights of the meal along with the dessert banana pudding was just delicious. The rest of the food however, was just OK and many lacked flavour. Taste your food chef! It was a bit of a hit and miss throughout the night and sadly did not meet expectations, especially for the cost but it was an overall good experience and we would go back to try other dishes. Maybe even this weekend perhaps. Till next time, this is Our Foodie Find!

Great food and ambience. Salt and pepper chicken ribs were my favourite and seemed to be very popular among other diners as well. Yellow seafood curry was fresh and full of flavour. The lamb dumpling could have been better with a sauce to go with.
