Review Phancy Cafe - Melbourne

Very nice place, food is good. Service is quick and friendly. Recommended for breakfast or coffee , could be good for lunch as well.

Coffee was good. The Bennie was good. The bacon and egg focaccia didn’t seem to have enough bacon or eggs. Prices were quite reasonable for the city though.

We came here at 11.30 am on Saturday thinking that we should have brunch. But the staff didn't give us the lunch menu, so we had to pick among breakfast options which were nothing special. Knowing that this restaurant's owner is likely Vietnamese, it's disappointing to see there is no Vietnamese-influenced dish on the breakfast menu. I ordered Bombay egg but it was nothing more than fried egg with some slice of tomato on a toast. The egg tasted so plain that I had to put on a lot of salt and pepper. My son had nutella crepe, with strawberry and icecream. It was okay but only deserved 3-star.

I wanted a place I can sit down and unwind a bit with coffee and a light breakfast, yet not in the middle of QV Market, and I found it. This small cafe was the perfect spot. Great coffee, and tasty food (I went for the eggs and bacon in a roll) with friendly staff Within a short walk from the market, makes for a perfect way to kill some time.

Great little Cafe with friendly staff. A good place to go for a healthy breakfast where you can quietly read the paper, before heading into Victoria Market which it just around the corner.

I'm typically not a big fan of greens, but the chicken salad was so delicious that I ended up eating more salad in that single meal that I did in the entire year. The chicken was flavourful and the salad was a refreshing contrast to the savoury cut.

Lovely experience !!! My breakfast was to die for...the only mole was hollandaise sauce... sorry it was bland. Service, staff, cleanness wonderful.

First off, its hard to find a place serving locks... this place will not appoint! Absolutely excellent food! And I am an early-riser; they open at 6a.

This place has the best coffee and the food is amazing. Everything is well priced and if i could give it a 6th star i would. Highly recommend this cafe.

Best breakfast at Victoria Markets We both had one of the big breakfasts - mine was the Farmers, my partner had the Phancy. I was able to replace toast with mushrooms. Food was cooked fresh, and tasted delicious. It was enough to set us both up for a day of tourist activities in Melbourne. The potato rosti was more like bubble and squeak than the classic rosti - still delicious. Perfectly cooked poached eggs, tomatoe relish that added zing. Recommend this restaurant for breakfast

The create your own breakfast optional was fun and exciting. Then to see it all out on the plate looked amazing. Then to top it off everything was delicious, even the coffee was quite nice not to mention how lovely all the staff were. Definitely coming back! (:

I have breakfast here most mornings before work and 1-2 lunches a week and Anthony and Nikki and Sophie and the Kitchen Staff are the most amazing hosts, I could not love this place more, really good food and great atmosphere with friendly staff in a great location. Keep it up guys!

Thank you for your kindness to BJ Cook, when he was robbed. Kindness is everything.

First time in Melbourne, tried these guys the second day we were here and they were absolutely fantastic, have been back twice since, coffee is amazing, the food is fantastic and the staff are some of the kindest I've ever dealt with, will definitely be coming back next time I'm in Melbourne

Taste: 3.5/5
Price: 4/5
$13 -15 with the most exp $17
This place is a great place for when u want something simple and affordable. Although it's not fancy, they do the simple things right and it's definitely yum. The price is so reasonable and portion size is huge. Ordered the Benny, rocket Benny and the avo toast with poached eggs. I Will def come back when I want some simple basics coz they do it right and at such a good price.

A friendly welcome and good, strong hot coffee. Just what was needed early on s Sunday morning. For the bargain price of $2 (if ordered a coffee) I got a fresh out of the oven home made muffin.

This place has gone seriously downhill over the last year or so. I just can't give them another chance. Forgotten or massively delayed coffees, unexpected extra charges for minor changes... The waitresses are lovely, and try hard, but they can't change the basic status of this place.

Very small, cosy and very cute cafe. Very nice for a simple, basic breakfast. Was cheap as well and close walking distance to the queens markets.

My friends and i got tired after visiting the Queen Victoria Markets. We stopped her for break and a refreshing beverage. The service was friendly.

This is the post that wall for me, and the reason why I'm so behind on the blog. Because sometimes things go wrong and scar you for possibly years. Someone gave me a muffin a month after this ordeal, and I pretty much had to put it through a sieve before I could eat it. Read with caution.

Such an understated hidden gem in the city. The coffee is amazing, and the breakfasts are delicious while also affordable. The service is great and personal, they remembered our order after only being here one time. Definitely worth a try!

The chicken sandwich is nice. Used to do much bigger serves though. Tried to order ahead using the number advertised on the internet but it doesn't work. They also advised that they don't have any takeaway menus which is strange considering how many office buildings are around. They're missing out on a lot of business from people that can't afford to wait ages while food is being made.
Cake Face
Literally stumbled upon this on our late day in Melbourne while walking to the markets and starving.

Didn't disappoint. $50 for 3 of us. Breakfast was delicious, service was friendly and quick and very welcoming.

Setting is anything but 'phancy' but food was tasty

I originally mistook Phancy Café as a pit-stop for vagrants – such is the dim-lighting and squalid surrounds – but I soon found it to be a reliable performer for the budget-conscious eater. Proprietor Anthony Phan has an affable, ingratiating disposition, and has developed a unique formula to bake muffins. If I recall correctly, he initially pressure cooks the batter (which at a guess is similar to boiling), before briefly placing the muffin tray in a piping-hot oven. The result is a muffin with a relatively crispy exterior and a densely moist interior. There are no other muffins in the market (that I have found, anyhow) which possess this exemplary texture, which is utterly delicious.

Anthony has a deal where a muff is thrown in for $2 with a coffee, which is well worth trying (arrive early if you want the white choc/raspberry).

The kitchen is home to a Punjabi brother and sister who are equal parts talented and friendly. You can expect your food to arrive promptly, with good flavor, and I am not sure you can ask for much more at this very competitive price-point. I would like to recommend the French Toast – a weekly staple of mine. In terms of the coffee – unfortunately this is where the enterprise is found wanting. There is a conspicuous lack of body and depth in the coffee flavor, but this is not uncommon, even at successful cafés. In summary, Phancy is certainly worth a pit-stop the next time you visit the Victoria Market.
Iceman
Phancy is ironically anything but fancy, but it doesn't need to be as it serves up some of the best value food n service in this part of the CBD. Their $7.50 egg n bacon Turkish roll is fabulous and substantial enough to sustain you until dinner. Highly recommended.
Salt N Magic
This place was great. We only had a very simple breakfast but they were more than happy to accomodate our not-on-the-menu options. The lady that served us was friendly & helpful (wish I'd got her name) & the coffee was lovely. We're hoping they are open tomorrow as it is a public holiday but also our last day in Melbourne.

Great coffee, welcoming service and delicious food - everything you need!. I love this café. the staff are super friendly, have excellent memories and are always cheerful. the food is so great. they don't mind making some alterations, the build your own bfast is a great idea. I will keep coming here again and again and encourage you to give it a go!

Delicious home-made beans. Went for brunch and ordered the 'make your own' breakfast option. Really great food. Great service and really friends staff
FreshBeans07
Good for its food. Experienced this café on a Sunday for brunch. It was pretty busy, but the one waitress still managed to keep a good customer service. The atmosphere lacked something unique, the music was old school which was nice. The decor is a bit outdated. But none of that really matters because the food was definitely great. Try the special with pumpkin bread, delicious.

Great lunch. Worked across the road for a year, eaten here on dozens of occassions.
Staff are really lovely and the place is nice, gets a little smokey from time to time from the kitchen but no big deal at all.
Sometimes its hard to find a nice, quick place for lunch in Melbourne CBD that isn't sushi or takeaway. Phancy though is fantastic, great vareity and really lovely dishes. The mushroom and chicken risotto, the chicken sandiwch or the fish and chips were my favourites but all are really great.
Highly recommended!!

Breakfast bliss! I'm temped not to write this because I want to keep this place a secret! Amazing food, so fresh and the highest quality. The value is outstanding - 13.95 for smashed avo with 2 eggs. It's our new favourite local. Raspberry and white choc muffin was to die for and only $2 with a coffee. Friendly non pretentious atmosphere - go phancy!
Luvfood
One if the best chai lattes i've ever had!! portions are big, like their scramble eggs as well.
Blergh!
Local love. We live around the corner and this little gem has quickly become a firm favourite. The coffee is excellent, the muffins addictive (hello sweet sweet sugar!) and their breakfast delicious. If you are after some miracle breakfast experience this is not the place for you, but if you want to enjoy good tasty food, wonderful service, all at a really good price - give Phancy a go. Recommended is the bacon and egg roll and of course - their baked beans with chorizo are top of my list. Also the scrambled eggs are yummy, very creamy and buttery, and unlike the place down the road (I'm looking a you Muletas) they serve real thick sour dough toast. Recommended.

Smashed avocado on sour dough with cherry tomatos and the most beautiful smooth feta thank you for a great start to the day at a great price

Great food, good value. We ate there twice last October when we were visiting Melbourne from Perth, with friends who were down from Brisbane. Breakfast on the way to Queen Vic Markets was so good we went back one day for lunch. When we visit Melbourne next month to see Warhorse, we plan on having breakfast at Phancy every day.

A rare find. I work just across the road, but don't get me wrong, there are a number of cafes in the area - we come here because it's good.

Prices are good, staff are friendly, but most importantly, the food and drinks are great. They have revolving specials, across and interesting and diverse range of cuisines, but all are done well.

The breakfasts would be my favourite thing - eggs are always perfectly done - poached eggs are textbook (or cookbook) perfection, everything is seasoned well, and servings are generous. Hot chocolates are actually hot - not so hot that you can't sip them, but hot enough that you know it's been freshly made - unlike most I encounter nowadays, which are mostly tepid.
I consider that I have high standards when it comes to breakfasts, and I rarely recommend to others, but Phancy, I would.

Food was expensive and didn't live up to its expectation. Waited around 35 mins for my food, which wasn't satisfactory. Would not recommend eating here.

OK so far. Have been twice now. Breakfast both occasions. Was too hungry to wait for lunch. Had a bean dish with soudough and that was nice and wholesome. Other time only had sourdough and jams and that was more than adequate for the price. The bread is really nice. Coffee is almost there.....but just not quite. Staff are pleasant. I'm a bit fussy about staff presentation and so I feel a little more effort would be good there. Jeans on waitress in this kind of venue doesn't cut it for me . Hair tied up too if you go near food prep area. It is a comfortable place to have brekky and coffee and spread the newspaper out. I will be trying lunch there this weekend as the burgers did look OK.
City Cruiser
This is the worst cafe around Vic market. I've been there many times as there are not many choices around there. 90% of the time I've been there, I have to wait over 20 mins for food, which is long enough time for the blend coffee they serve to become very cold when the food finally arrives. Service is horrible, there was once where I waited over 20 mins and realized that the waitress has forgotten to put my order in! 20 mins I would not get back and was suffering from anguish and hunger.

Muffins are hot....and a monster Chai tea! Yum :-)

WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED. I turn up today and ordered the "farmers breky".
Bad service, bored staff and the food was bland/tasteless. I give this place 6 months at this rate.
If you are charging premium prices, make sure you have the food to match. Serving sizes have shrunk by 30% reflecting bad business cost savings.

Lift your game or get out and let someone have a go.

ONE YEAR AGO
This is my local and have been here a few times.

Food is always tasty and fresh, love the quiet location on the way to Victoria Market for brunch.

Going by all these rich foods I'm surprised that l loose weight :D

Worth a try!

Great cafe, attentive and friendly staff. So glad I stumbled across it. This is the best spot to get breakfast before you tackle the Vic Market. They cook their bacon & eggs to perfection.

Love the Coffee & Food. Best cup of coffee I had while in Melbourne! It also had a heart pictured on the top, which always makes you feel like the coffee maker put some love and care into making it. Also had the spring rolls and it made me feel like I had ordered them from Vietnam, as they were that good! My only regret would be that we only found this place on the second last day of our trip. Will definitely go there next time in Melbourne

Had lunch there a couple weeks ago after recently moving close by. The food, although quite good, was served in very small portions. I had chicken tenders which were tiny and over-priced and were strangely served on a piece of lettuce, with nothing else. My husband had pizza which was average at best, and spring rolls. The spring rolls were quite tasty but not tasty enough to return for. We're sick of going to cafes and restaurants and being ripped off so we won't be returning.
