Review Yuzu At Church Lane - Melbourne

Yos William
I walked past this small Japanese place few weeks back and finally got to try it. Their menu list was quite limited but this was the thing I liked. I could just decide quickly and order. We ordered the chicken karage curry don and crispy katsu don. They were quite delicious. I really liked the sesame dipping sauce for the crispy pork katsu. It was full of flavour. We also ordered the gyoza and nori fries. The place was cozy and the service was fantastic. The English waiter who served us was very polite and attentive. Overall, we had a good experience at this restaurant.

New ownership so webunderstand they are getting on their feet but even so we are very disappointed. Enjoyed the tofu in the agedashi dish but the soup was VERY salty. We liked the rice. However, -Pork Katsu was dry -Curry was served Luke warm -We had lettuce and a bit of carrot as the Bento Box salad -Takoyaki had tiny pieces of meat, but was tasty - No sauce (tonkatsu sauce) with the pork The curry flavour was good but as said was cold, only had onion and one GIANT piece of potato. We won't be back. Photo is when we just started on the Bento boxes. Bit slim for pickings compared to many places we've been around the CBD and inner suburbs.

Decent little taste test of Japan. Felt bad for the waiter as he appeared to be all alone on New Year's Day which was always going to be busy. The food was good, though I wasn't informed they were out of chicken until my Udon already arrived - chicken less. But it was still very tasty. I hope this was just a bad day as this place certainly has potential to be a good time.

The rice tasted like plastic, the worst rice I have ever had in Japanese curry. The carrot was bit too raw. The good thing is they provide paper straws

The food was delicious, service was good but slow, and the decor was cute. Had sashimi, gyōza and karaage.

Stopped for lunch. I can highly recommend the chicken katsu curry. Fresh, tasty and so good and warming in this cold winter!! Highly recommended

it’s a cute little Japanese restaurant sitting in the alley. serving was pretty good.

Very nice matcha cheese cake and yuzu lime bitter!!! Super highly recommend to come here!!! The cake is rich and creamy without overwhelming!!! Super love it!!! And the drink is super refreshing!!!

The take away Katsu Curry Don size is too small. I don’t think that’s enough for a man.

I originally posted my review on Facebook, but decided to share with a wider audience. I’ve attached my original review so won’t repeat it here - <br/><br/>The screenshots show how unprofessional they are, it really is unacceptable. Any professional business wouldn’t respond in this manner. I’ve not been rude in my original post, but their response pretty much sums up the service you would receive. <br/><br/>Please reconsider coming here unless you want to have a similar experience to me.

Nice place however they have changed the portions and now it's quite small for the price~ Salmon is a little bit too dry and beef tataki too very small portion.Another positive points is good location and nice ambience.

3.5/5<br/>I was looking for some lunch and Japanese was on the menu. I ordered teriyaki don chicken and the service was alright.<br/><br/>My teriyaki chicken was quite tasty with good quality chicken and steaming hot rice. I just wanted more rice. <br/><br/>This place gets reasonably busy at lunch time and when I arrived I was asked if I had a booking and I said no and when I looked around the place was empty hahaha <br/><br/>But when I left there were a few more punters. And when I went to pay by cash as they have a credit card surcharge I was overcharged. Lucky I only ordered 1 dish or I may not have noticed! Mmnn.<br/><br/>Anyway it was still a good lunch overall.

Came here with colleagues and had a subpar experience. Service was slow, took forever to get the waiters' attention. Food came out at different times which is of course super awkward if you're dining with colleagues. My dish came at least 10 minutes after everyone else's had already arrived despite mine being the easiest to make as it was all raw fish. I ordered the chirashi zushi which was so small and boring, would have nice to see more ingredients on it instead of just fish and avocado.

I came here for lunch. The restaurant was full but not overly busy. They seemed to have only one waitress serving so it took a long time before we ordered. I had to eventually wave to the waitress to get her attention, or we would otherwise have been still waiting! I ordered the chicken bento box which was $22. It was good, but I've had other bento boxes which were just as good, if not better and at half the price. I don't think I will come back here.

@yuzucuisine Aburi Salmon Nigiri - This was my first visit at yuzu in Church Lane and ive already decided what to order in my next visit.Loved the flavours in every dish and the dessert puts a smile on my face.

Don’t even know how the owner run this restaurant, Yuzu opened at a business district but the service is SUPER SLOW, I’ve waited for 30 minutes for a Ramen. Chicken karage was fired for too long time, so it tastes a bit of bitter. Also, too much flours outside the chicken. As the soup of ramen, the taste is below average. I think they can do better.

Food was OK but the service was horrendous. My guest is unable to eat raw fish. When we asked if the sushi as part of bento box had 'sashimi' in it (incorrect term used), the waitress / manager said no its just a small roll and there is no raw fish (where it is likely that she would be aware some patrons might be allergic to types of seafood). When the bento box came out we raised it with her but instead she told us off that we didn't say that my guest could not eat raw fish. She was rather inhospitable and difficult to deal with. Would not be coming back.

Not impressed with Yuzu. I sat for ages without anyone noticing or bringing menus. Then it took even longer to finally order. I tried the veg curry which was alright but sort of an odd interpretation. There was no protein and a few potatoes were chucked into the curry, but most of the veg was turnwd into a weird cooked slaw sort of thing and piled on top. My friend got a vegan Udon that was simple and perhaps a better choice.

My colleagues and I frequent this eatery since it opened its doors and it started with really good quality Japanese food and service but lately, the standards have really dropped drastically. We went back a few times lately and it has been disappointing. I had ramen that was like rubber (flour not rinsed before cooking), vegetarian gyozas that were overpriced and mushy, and the classic beef don turned into a stew. In the last visit, we were literally served two plates of burnt beef don! I cannot believe that the chef was willing to serve that burnt blackened dish to us. Service was also appalling as the manager did not come to apologise. The bill was on them and was served teriyaki chicken don instead but even that dish was less than average. Tasted like a few pieces of Unmarinated chicken dribbled in some teriyaki sauce. I decided to write this review because it’s been an ongoing disappointment with the food. It’s really disappointing that they have gone so far down the quality line.

Had their sushi platter on a weekday night, sashimi did not taste as fresh as it should have. Tempura batter was also too thick, perhaps more of a lunch venue.

We were sat down at 7pm on a Friday night, no menus, no water. We talked for 15 minutes and realised they had forgotten about us. Only then did we receive a menu once we got their attention.<br/><br/>I understand that we went at peak hour time but as a waiter you should always have a smile on your face and handle yourself calmly. The waiters looked frazzled and couldn't seem to handle their job??<br/><br/>We ordered the beef tataki, black tempura calamari, nasu dengaku, and monstrous sushi/sashimi.<br/>Beef tataki was very small, calamari was different but too salty to eat more than one piece. Eggplant was on the other end of the spectrum and very sweet.<br/>The sushi sashimi platter was presented well, however the quality was very poor. If I wanted cheap takeaway sushi, I would have got to the local sushi sushi joint. I always judge the sushi by the quality of the tuna, and this one just tasted like mush... Not very fresh.<br/><br/>If I had to pay full price for this restaurant I'd be very unhappy. Luckily we had an entertainment coupon and the bill came to $90 for two people so it was somewhat bearable...<br/><br/>Go to Kenzan if you want good quality Japanese.

Came here months ago, and really enjoyed the dishes we had. Beef tataki, Carpaccio and a few other small dishes, the flavours were amazing. It was a quick lunch, but we vowed to return and get the sushi sashimi platter sometime. Well, we came back and unfortunately it was a huge disappointment. The fish was not fresh and presentation was not as it was as in the photos posted of the dish. Won’t be coming back now.
Cassandra Lee
Yuzu was amazing! The staff were very friendly and helpful and the dishes were relatively quick to arrive. Everyone enjoyed the fresh sashimi and sushi, and the soft shell crab buns were yum! Desserts here were good too, would recommend the cheesecake and chocolate soufflé. We will definitely be back!
Aitl
Such a disappointment, we waited so long for the food to come out and then when it did, it definitely wasn't authentic Japanese food! Weird combinations you wouldn't find in a REAL Japanese restaurant (I'm Japanese so I know...). The only positive thing I can say is that the staff were lovely but I felt sorry for them because they we so obviously under staffed, just two of them covering a small area!
Vina Taufiq
Ordered quite a bit since we were proper hungry. Had all the main courses: salmon, beef and duck with additional tempura and roll. The roll was good but can’t remember the name (it had avocados), salmon was good, braised beef ribs was very tender but the sauce was overpoweringly sweet (reminded me to an Indonesian dish called “semur”) and the roast duck somehow still had the ‘duck’ smell — if you know what I mean, so didn’t finish it. Overall, we were more satisfied with the appetisers than the main courses.

Featured in Melbourne best sushi? No way, far from that. It’s ok, but best sushi is a big call. The noodles are really boring. A $52 sushi plate is way over priced for this quality sushi I’m getting.<br/>The sushi roll is probably the same as what I can get from a take away sushi booth.<br/>Don’t waste your money and this restaurant shouldn’t be Featured in Melbourne’s best sushi <br/>Nori fries is actually quite good.

Beef Tataki : 😍 Amazing <br/>Calamari Black Tempura : 😍 Amazing <br/>Super Kale Salad : 😁 Great <br/>Sushi & Sashimi : 😁 Great <br/>Salmon : 😁 Great <br/>Peach Chuhai : 😁 Great <br/><br/>Beautiful and elegantly plated Japanese food. Beef Tataki and the Black Calamari were the two dishes I absolutely loved. Very simple but very delicious. The Peach Chuhai cocktail was very fragrant and refreshing but damn it was strong. Maybe it’s cause I’m a little weakling when it come to alcohol but if you ever decide to try it .. just a heads up.
Alessandra
Place and music were very nice but they didn't have heaps of items in the menu. The waitress even tried to be nice but everything we wanted they didn't have it. They informed us of out of stock items as soon as we got the menu but they didn't let us know about the testing platter. Too expensive for what they offer (e.g. beef tataki $12 for 3 slices). The black calamari's took a very long time to be prepared. Overall I wouldn't come back here.

The food is too disappointing. Normally, I don’t bother to leave the review but this one was shocking. We ordered kind of feed me option and it was really slow & poor. Didn’t really understand the structure of this option. Feel like they just wanted to get rid of some ingredients. The sushi roll was just awful as the chef didn’t make properly. Rice would go everywhere. There is reason why it’s quiet. Its really not organised well. You will have to wait for 30mins for the first course of feed me option even if it’s so quite. Go to sushi shop anywhere in Melbourne, you will have better food and service.
Nicolas Grimbilos
Probably one of the best Japanese restaurants I’ve been to. Kingfish Carpaccio is a must. The service is perfect even 10minutes before closing they are still welcoming. Would 100% recommend
Alicia Martinez
The food here is amazing! I love the ramen it’s so good and so reasonably priced too! My favourite was the kaarage ramen with a tonkatsu base
Lauren
Dinner was delicious, had the soft shell crab burger crunchy soft shell crab, bun soft and fresh and slaw and sauce delicious all worked together. the pork belly just melt in your mouth and the matcha cheesecake with green tea ice cream seriously amazing still thinking about. 10 of 10 for Japanese. Staff so lovely and friendly ask them for recommendations on what to get so helpful and spot on with the choices.

went to yuzu with a Japanese friend and that was a great decision!<br/>the calamari fries were cooked very well, calamari was fresh.<br/>the kale salad was good, but sweet miso sause was too sweet.<br/>cheesecake and ice cream were both perfect!
Michelle Yong
We went as a big group of 11 and the staff was attentive but not the friendliest. The atmosphere was nice, they had soft throw pillows on the cushion side of the seats.<br/><br/>Food was mediocre, ordered the Chasiu Ramen, broth and chasiu was good but noodles were overcooked and soggy.
Jasmine
A gorgeous interior, wonderful ceramic bowls for a Japanese lunch.<br/><br/>Ordered:<br/>Pork Katsu Curry Don: ($14.00)<br/><br/>Review:<br/>Not bad rice, pork katsu and curry. Crispy pork katsu, with sprinkles of vegetable - shout out to that 1 broccoli evident in my dish.<br/>I'd much prefer, although different protein, Purple Peanut's chicken curry. A couple of dollars cheaper, my experience at Purple Peanuts was more wholesome and enjoyable - even though their interior is infinitely smaller.<br/><br/>However, Yuzu provides ample space and an opportunity to book which is great for all those client meetings and catch ups over lunch. Not bad for a satisfying and filling lunch - but nothing amazing either.

Came after work for quick lunch (after 2pm), it's hidden in the side lane across from Rialto. Great location if you work nearby and want some personal space during the lunch rush.<br/><br/>Soba salad - full of fresh veggies, great vegan dish :) need to mix your salad properly or it'll be tasteless as all the Yuzu dressing are at the bottom.<br/><br/>Tataki - almost the same quality I had in Japan :P highly recommend if you like your red meat :)<br/><br/>Kingfish sashimi salad - the sashimi was very fresh, and the yuzu dressing gives a nice citrus kick.<br/><br/>Yuzu chicken - the presentation looks appetizing, but after having the tataki and kingfish sashimi this dish seems very bland and taste very similar to the kingfish salad.<br/><br/>Macha cheesecake - Covered with rose petals and macha sauce, it's their signature dish but for me it's just average rating from all the matcha desserts I've tried.<br/><br/>Overall will come back long for quick fix or casual catch up with friends.<br/>

Found this little Fusion Japanese restaurant in a lane way and though we go in and give it a go. The atmosphere is really chilling and intimate for dating or just a nice night out with some friends. We decided to get the course set which was really fair priced for what we got. Can’t wait to return here again

Awful place, awful service.<br/>Wouldn't recommend at all, too expensive and the service is atrocious to say the least, plus some of the staff are super disrespectful!<br/>Just avoid it, there are better quality japanese restaurants around.

Visited on Saturday night and our waitress was excellent. Bentos were generous and fresh, and miso was best I've tasted. Everyone enjoyed their meals!

Food here was alright, the sashimi platter was quite fresh but I find it a little on the pricier side. I guess you’re paying for the quality.<br/>Got the curry as well (which I forgot to take a picture of), and quite liked it. <br/>Matcha dessert was not bad, but as you can see in the picture, the ice cream melted very quickly. Was already melting by the time it hit my table so it was a little of a goopy mess.<br/>Overall, food was just okay. Might just come back here for the drinks next time, they have a really good range of alcohol :)

Was here for a wedding party gathering. The food is Okay but the service is awful, for the tasting menu we waited for 45 minutes between dishes and everyone was starving. Then they told us they only have one chef in the kitchen and 2 waitress on the floor thus it's slow. It took us 3 and half hours to complete the meal while we have to get some fast food afterwards due to hunger. Not sure if it is an isolated event but will never come back here again.

Ambience: 3.5/5<br/>Food:4/5<br/>Staff: 3.5/5<br/>Will I return: If a friend wanted to go, otherwise probably won’t return on my own. <br/><br/>Tried Yuzu for the second time round over the weekend. We were a group of 8 so I can understand that ordering can be a bit messy. We went on a Friday night which is probably one of their busiest nights with after work drinks. The restaurant had really bad air circulation and you can actually see the fog in the air form all the kitchen fumes. <br/>The first waitress completely forgot our drink orders and the second waitress had a hard time getting our orders correct as it was so noisy. <br/>On the up side, their nori fries were so good we had to order a second serve. The mayo that accompanied the fries were awesome, it had a lovely chipotle type flavouring to it. The karage chicken was good but nothing special and pretty much like every other Japanese restaurant. The individual dishes were good but I reckon the bento boxes were more value for money as you get a few different things and not just the one dish for a similar price. The monstrous sushi platter was great but we all thought it was on the pricier side. <br/>However, their drinks are quite reasonably priced hence I can see why it’s a popular spot for after work drinks <br/>

Food and drinks were good but the service was very disappointing. Happy hour cocktails were a great price for what you get and recommend the brownie. Unlikely to go again.
April_eats
Can not fault the food at all, very fresh and all the flavours balanced well. However the customer service really let them down. I can’t say I’ll be back, haven’t experienced a level of service like this in Melbourne before, really put a dampener on a special occasion. Happy hour was good however the French martini was very watery, not much froth on the top like usual. Great desserts, the brownie was really good.
Linda
Good food. Nice venue. Main let down is the service is mediocre. I commonly find myself standing in the “wait to be served” line for ages unattended. Very busy over lunch times too!

Goddam it Yuzu! - The one time! <br/><br/>Full disclosure - I have been here many a times before and used to be an avid fan of the express Bento box. However,<br/><br/>I went here last week and I decided this time I would be writing a review, I was walking to the restaurant expecting to give a 4-5 stars, as my past experiences had led me to believe. <br/><br/>I chose the butterfish bento box. I was excited, but once the food arrived it had a bit of a nasty taste and for whatever reason I was struggling to eat it. As it turns out, I spent the rest of the day feeling unwell. I assume that either perhaps the fish was bad, or if it was meant to be like that then they must have misspelled gutterfish, either way it ruined this place for me. <br/><br/>Unfortunately that was an experience which will stop me from ever returning and i cannot recommend this place to anyone anymore. <br/><br/>Yuzu, you've lost it.

Went for lunch as a group of 5 today as a farewell gift to a colleague<br/>Food was good service was terrible, 45 mins in we get two meals, then a third, then the fourth which meant the 1st two were finished, then the fifth came Now we all sat until that person was finished.<br/>No apology, no how was everything, nothing.<br/>$156.00 later we left 1hr 45 mins to eat 1 dish each.<br/>Terrible!
Saladzzz
A spacious restaurant with attractive decoration. Wait staff were very friendly and welcoming. Some good deals between 5-7pm everyday; $10 cocktails and snacks. Dishes we ordered such as peri-peri calamari, grilled seafood sushi, hamachidon and spicy salmon sushi were average. Would only be back for drinks as the ambience is good.
Charlie And Ko Reviews
Lunch fine favourite! Yuzu has a perfectly sophisticated ambience, which is evident by all the lunch tome meetings you see around the place. The food is always served quickly (for a sit down restaurant), tasty and good value. My only complaint is that the Sashimi is very expensive and the volume of msg used in some of the dishes is too much.
Nicolevorperian
We tried the Yuzu feast where the chef prepares 6 dishes of their choice. Each dish was delicious, beautifully presented and it was a fun experience to see what came out next! Reasonably priced and lovely atmosphere - I will be returning.
Iryna Sakhatovska
Came here for lunch and absolutely loved the restaurant. The interior is beautiful and spacious - you don't feel like you're crammed next to everyone. The service was excellent. As for the food - we ordered the Nabeyaki Udon & the Vegetable Ramen with Charshu pork. Both the dishes were above average, but not enough for me to come back for. I will be coming back to try the sashimi dishes as these seem to be the specialty.
Phil Murray
I really wish i could have given a zero. Food was okay but overpriced but the staff were by far the rudest i have come across. My rating is by no means is a reflection on the kitchen but if im spending 75 per person im going to expect to be looked after and spoken to professionally. <br/><br/>Please also keep in mind most people at the restaurant will be dining on a discount and this is why the ratings are higher than expected.
Much Ado About Food
This dinner was a celebratory one because of my husband's remuneration review, which was pretty good (I mean, things like this could always be better, but why nit-pick?). He felt like having Japanese food, which we hadn't eaten in a while, so I Googled a few places close by to his work and Yuzu caught our interest because they had a dish called "crispy duck" (two of our favourite things: crispiness and duck!) and the prices weren't over the top. We ordered a few things to share:<br/><br/>• Nori fries (side/entrée)<br/>• Entrée share plate which included edamame, gyoza, chicken karage, takoyaki, harumaki<br/>• Slow cooked beef ribs (main)<br/>• Crispy duck (main)<br/>• Peanut brownie with house-made vanilla ice cream (dessert)<br/><br/>Overall, the food was pretty good, but all the dishes we ordered (except the Nori fries and dessert) were under the 'share' section of the menu and we felt the portions were quite small for sharing. They looked more like main meal portions as opposed to sharing plates. Although, the entrée share plate was quite good for two people and we got a chance to try a little of everything! I think that particular share plate is only available during happy hour, though.<br/><br/>My favourite dish of the night was the crispy duck; so crispy on the outside and perfectly cooked on the inside - sometimes people overcook duck and it gets really dry and unpleasant, but this was done to perfection.<br/><br/>Dessert was to die for, the brownie was slightly crispy on the outside but super soft and fluffy on the inside and the ice cream that came with it was phenomenal (everyone should make their own ice cream!); the only issue we had was the texture of the peanuts - they were more soggy than crunchy and could have been crushed up smaller. I'd definitely like to go back here now that I'm no longer pregnant and can eat raw foods again, would love to try out some of the sushi/sashimi.<br/><br/>The atmosphere was that of a fine dining restaurant without the ridiculously large pricetag! The inside is much more spacious than you'd expect from where the entrance is located and how it appears outside.<br/>I think it gets a little busier the later it gets and the ambience changes into a more bar-like feel, which is probably why it was hard to get any service after 7pm! Took them over 15 minutes to get us our bill and we tried to catch their attention a few times, one of them said she would come back, but never did. Missed our train home and had to catch the next one, but not a major issue as we weren't in a hurry to be anywhere. Overall, the customer service was fantastic.<br/><br/>Would recommend for a casual night out if you don't really have anywhere to be after 7pm and aren't too fussed about trying to get service!<br/><br/>www.thejennichronicles.com

Unfortunately I didn’t take pic of the food. however food is really good and the place could fit many ppl. they do have bar as well . the Sushi and Sashimi were truly worth try and I am definitely will come back ! <br/>the Mocha dessert are good as well.
The Dear Luncher
How good is it when you tuck in to just about every single type of meat there is, in one sitting? As The Dear Luncher often says, "meat is mandatory" and on this debut visit to Yuzu this ethos was taken to another level. Pork gyoza and chicken karaage kicked things off and both were spectacular. The gyoza in particular were top shelf. Soft in the sweet spot but a bit of crispyness on the periphery too. A top 3 gyoza in Melbourne experience without a doubt. The pork was etched with cabbage and there was a nice little spice kick as well.<br/><br/>For mains the beef don and some tempura selections. The beef in this don had a smokiness too it that was sublime. The tempura, executed extremely well. A pint of Sapporo streamed down the gullet to provide the most excellent amber accompaniment.<br/><br/>Yuzu is a big space, it doesn't look like it from the outside. The service was flawless. To top things off, The Dear Luncher and his comrades paid a measly $30 a head for this fabulous pre Xmas feed. A meal that had beef, pork, fish and chicken across all the dishes. Sensational.
CultureClash
This place manages large number of guests. The staff are attentive and the sushi and sashimi dishes are truly a work of art!<br/>The Omakase nigiri set was spot on the best selection of fresh fish (and baby octopus).<br/>Steak was tender and small and the mushrooms underneath it creates a harmony in mouth.<br/>Will order cocktails if i return because i missed the happy hour by 2 minutes :(<br/><br/>

Nice spacious place suitable for after work drinks and sharing style dinner.<br/><br/>I went on a Friday night for an early catch up dinner with a friend. There’s a selection of drinks on $10 (including high ball) and also a small sharing plate (suitable for two) available that I will recommend for drinks<br/><br/>Dinner is driven by a selection of sushi and sashimi so if you are not a fresh fish fan, there is still hot food available, just more limited.<br/><br/>We had a king fish carpaccio, a main sushi and sashimi platter, some fries dabbled with nori (seaweed) served along with mayonnaise and cold udon noodles (as it was a relatively warm day.<br/><br/>All in all, taste is good, I especially like the king fish carpaccio and the fish are fresh. The selection variety is not too wide, but sufficient. Not truly Japanese but more fusion Japanese.<br/><br/>Recommend for small groups catch up with drinking and nibbling (but try to be there at happy hour!).

Came here for a work lunch. The food I tried was delicious. Sashimi was so fresh. The miso soup was tasty and the (vegetable) Goza had great flavours. Only negative was that service was a little bit slow at the start
.itadakimasu~
Came here for early dinner and ordered several dishes including the happy hour combo which is a bargain if you want to sample a variety of tapas. The tapas were tasty and for $10 only, it was pretty satisfying. The yuzu mocktail however was overly sweet and there was not a hint of yuzu flavour which was a disappointment. Moving on to the other dishes; the okonomiyaki and fries were ordinary but were still flavourful, the skewers had a good amount of sauce (my favourite being the chicken out of the 3 meats) and the tempura udon was good but wish it had included tempura prawn(s) (the mix tempura consisted of zucchini, sweet potato, eggplant and white fish). Overall the food was decent.

Yuzu is a spacious Japanese restaurant that seems popular to city workers for their lunch time breaks. Although I haven't been after work, it looks like a great spot to kick back for after work drinks, and to grab a decent feed. Staff are friendly, although food does come out a little slower than I would like. Everything is well seasoned, and the sushi is well prepared. Can't wait to try more of the options on the menu!
Melody.mt.tang
It was a bit hard to find the restaurant as it is on the side street. <br/>I chose the set menu since I am a really indecisive person 😅 most of the courses where great except for one fish dish that was a bit over cooked and dry.<br/><br/>Great and quick service~<br/>

Quality and freshness of food is great here with great value for money. But service is bad, took staff three or more times before they noticed we were waving our hands around to get their attention to get seated for our booking, to order drinks, then to order food and finally to order our bill😓 otherwise, our experience was pretty good overall and will be back again. Highly recommend the sushi and sashimi platter as well as the Omakaze platter and the soft shell crab sliders!

Hidden in Church Lane is a nice Japanese restaurant serving a range of Japanese dishes. We ordered a range of items and was lucky it was happy hour! <br/><br/>We started off with a jug of Pina Colada 🍸And happy hour snacks. The service was great and they paced our food well so our table wasn’t overflowing with food. <br/><br/>My favourite dish was the Salmon Aburi ( but $7.30 for 2...eeks) and the Nasu Dengaku (Miso Eggplant).<br/><br/>The good: great atmosphere , friendly staff and great food<br/><br/>The bad: a bit hidden<br/><br/>I’d be back for: Aburi!
Lizzie Eats Melbourne
Lizzie's first impression: This place is another hidden gem (luckily very close to where I work). The staff are exceptionally attentive and friendly. <br/><br/>Lizzie enjoyed: I loved the sashimi here as it is fresh and has alot of variety. The sushis in the vietnamese rice paper wraps are very creative and tasted yummy. <br/><br/>Lizzie did not enjoy: The individual dishes like the don aburi salmon and teriyaki beef is a let down as the dish only has rice and meat with a side of pickles and not enough sauce leaving the dish dry and a little bland. Extra sauce has extra charge which is an overkill. <br/><br/>Lizzie rates overall: I think they have plenty of good dishes but can also improve on others. A place great for corporate lunches and catch ups.

Went on the Thursday night and the place was fairly quite. <br/>Ordered the 'monstrous' sashimi, the miso grilled eggplant, skewer platter and crispy duck. All taste good with no complain but nothing stood out to me. <br/>One minor thing I'll mention is the abruptness of the waitress. I can see that she's fast and knows what she's doing but it makes you feel like she's trying to kick you out of the place. No simple question of 'are you guys done with the dish?' Etc. just came over and take it away. <br/>Overall, will go back to try other dishes if I'm around that side of town.

Ordered via Deliveroo: mixed sushi platter and takoyaki (octopus balls). I don't know who packed it but seriously who packs sushi (raw fish) with hot takoyaki? Bag it separately please! <br/><br/>The sushi thankfully didn't seemed to have gone off, but some of the fish is not as fresh as the others. For $23 I expected the quality to be much better, considering O'Bara Bara at Calia costs less but use better quality fish. The takoyaki is quite salty as well.

Been to this venue multiple times and staff is always friendly, food is amazing and quite affordable, and carries with it a very chill atmosphere. Would highly recommend!

Really yummy Japanese restaurant in the heart of the cbd. The Chicken Set bento box is a definite winner. It comes with teriyaki chicken, steamed rice, sashimi, a spring roll, two mini sushi rolls, a green salad and a miso soup. For $18 it's good value. The vegetable curry is also yummy. The soup with gyoza is to die for on a cold day. Fresh sushi and sashimi is delicious and fresh as well. I highly recommend this place!

Soup was cold- not much flavour. Nice staff- overpriced. I found it to be a bit dark and gloomy- hard to read the menu. The service was reasonable

Food is good and service is great. So surprised every time coming here, there aren't too many people. Perfect place to have fine dinner with friends.

Deciding where to eat has been made easier with the liven app. If you're not already on it, liven offers discounts at selected restaurants in the form of liven cash back which you can then use at participating restaurants. We have been to a couple and plan to go through the list. The menu is quite limited so we opted for beef tataki, chef's omakase sushi, salmon tartare, mixed tempura and miso cod. The beef tataki was slightly too salty, but would otherwise be a great dish. The tempura batter was light and crisp, but could be improved if the pieces were cut smaller. The salmon tartare was refreshing and the flavours balanced each other out well. The orange was a nice flavour to the mix. The omakase was a bit hit and miss, some flavours were really interesting while others were quite ordinary. The black cod was juicy but lacked flavour without the sauce which was quite sweet. I loved the atmosphere at Yuzu, the decor is really comforting and the presentation is well executed.

If you love fresh sashimi then you cannot miss this place. Hidden in a small alley way lies a part of japan. We went here on a monday night, it wasn't so busy. Staff was friendly, firstly we ordered our drinks. There was so much to chose, we just ordered mainly sushi and sashimi to share among us three. The fish was really fresh. 🐟💯💯💯

Stopped by Yuzu off Collins street on Friday night for dinner. The menu had a good variety, and was reasonably priced too. The highlights for me were the pork gyoza and the soft shell crab brioche burger, really juicy and delicious. The sashimi was good, however not the best I have had. The only other thing I would note is that the service was quite slow, it took quite a while for us to place our order, and then again for it to come out.

Great option for a fresh and tasty lunch with pleasant surrounds. We ordered the main size platter of sushi and sashimi. I loved the wide selection of fish and seafood on offer and the platter was the perfect amount to share between two.

Lovely food and the dessert in particular was great. The sashimi was fresh but I didn't think the sushi was great. The cocktails were good too, and I would definitely come back for the happy hour!

If you're looking for a relaxed dinner with friends or a date, arrive early. The light and tasty menu paired with the drinks will leave satisfied but never over stuffed.

Yuzu has a good setting for a more upmarket business/sit down lunch during the week. The food (and prices) are a notch above other casual Japanese places too. Honestly, I was shocked that they charge $2 to replace standard with brown rice. I was happy with the teriyaki beef dish as the meat was tender (ie. not the pedestrian beef slices you'd see in Asian takeaways). The teriyaki sauce, however, was too sweet for my liking. All I could taste was sugar. I'd come back to try the katsu as it seems like a popular choice!
Kath's Food Indulgences
Delicious food, great customer service and a nice ambience (not a crowded place and really nice decor). Pictured: tempura udon and sashimi entree (kingfish, swordfish, salmon and tuna)
Salted Caramel
Refined delicate morsels arranged into kingfish carpaccio- delightful. Round soft flavours in a warm tasty tofu age dashi. Friendly vibe, down to earth venu with good food.
Good Food, Good Mood
I must've gone to Yuzu on an off day as they had run out of a few dishes that I'd like to try. The ceviche on special was a bit fishy too. Chicken curry don was good but more expensive than I thought, I guess location would've contributed to that being off Collins St. Gyoza was good.

Ordered Katsu curry don and the teriyaki chicken bento set for lunch. Service was friendly and quick. Katsu curry don was enjoyable. The deep fried pork cutlet was nicely cooked, good crunch on the outside and not too dry on the meat. They gave good amount of curry sauce, very pleased with that. The teriyaki chicken was tasty and it was a nicely put bento set.
Foodie Guy
Ordered Sashimi platter and Katsudon. The Sashimi were all fresh and tasted excellent no fishy after taste at all, the Katsudon however was good, but I've been so used to the O'bento's style of Katsudon which I have to say tasted better than Yuzu's. Customer service is friendly.

Good Japanese lunch fare, and reasonable prices. The Ramen is alright, up there as one of the better ones floating around Melbourne but not in the same league as the legit ramen places floating around. Not crazy cheap, but worth the money. Also, the peanut butter brownies they had on offer one time at the counter were crazy good. Like, actually insanely good.

Lovely food. Average service. My companions dinner was bought out 25 mins before mine. Kind of a downer when you go out for dinner together. <br/>But..... really nice fresh innovative food.

Waited 20 mins for take away and the food is just average quality. Ordered take away to save time and ended up spending more time. Do not recommend. BTW, rice is completely cold straight from fridge. Have to microwave it myself.
The New Fave
For most restaurants, it's safe to say that the food eating in is nearly always better than the food delivered to your door. Surprisingly, when it comes to Japanese venue Yuzu, this isn't the case. Yuzu is one of my tried and true take out options when staying back late at work - usually arriving at my work's door only 20 or so minutes after ordering, it always comes fresh, hot and delicious. My go-to dish - the Katsu Curry  - crispy fried pork served with in a deliciously rich curry sauce.

Went here for lunch and had the tonkotsu ramen with charshu pork, the soup was luke warm and the pork had gone bad. Won't be coming back in a hurry
Sallysfoodadventures
It's tucked in on the side of Church Lane. Great little place, quite trendy, I'd actually be ok with going here for a date. The sangria during happy hour was delicious! It's the spices in it, makes it so yummy. I had the set meal, fish, delicious. Perfect size and the takoyaki is really yummy. We also ordered the vegetable gyoza to start with but I'm pretty sure they accidentally gave us the pork ones, we were kind of hungry and we ate them before we really had a chance to flag it with them. They have dinner specials too which I'd like to try next time. I'll definitely be back again!

We decided to look for a Japanese restaurant one evening, particularly as it's Davin's favourite cuisine and I've gone a bit crazy with French food lately so we needed a break. So off we went to check out Yuzu. The restaurant is very spacious and we noticed this because it was pretty empty for a weekend night. However the decor inside is lovely and it had a classy feel to it. The only suspicious thing was why it was not packed with people.<br/><br/>Anyway we were seated and given menus to peruse which actually looked really appealing. We ordered some cocktails to start with and then got to the food. Being the hungry piglets we were we ordered the beef tataki, King fish carpaccio, Hokkaido scallops and a plate of mixed prawns and meat skewers. All these dishes were overly sweet which was quite disappointing given it sounded like they had so much potential. The tataki, carpaccio and skewers were particularly sickly sweet. We also ordered the grilled fish cheeks, butter fish miso and the ramen. They were also very ordinary. The butter fish miso was also too sweet. We find it quite rare to have so many Japanese dishes that are very sweet. <br/><br/>I also ordered a glass of wine in which the waitress acknowledged however she didn't come back for some time, and when she did she started packing stuff in the fridge so she clearly forgot. I ended up having to follow up with her because by then we had almost finished our meals. Concerning, given we were the only ones in the restaurant so not sure how they would cope with a full house. Overall, not a restaurant we would revisit given the quality of food and poor customer service.<br/><br/>- H<br/>

I had chicken teriyaki ramen. The chicken is fine. But the noodles are bad. They tied together. And the soup is too rich. I don't like. Will never try again and not recommend.
Jel_J_Chriee
I like their chirashi sushi, the sashimi is really fresh and nice taste with the seaweed and mushroom<br/>Many people during lunch time so i often get the seat at the counter.<br/>Seeing the chefs cutting those meat and decorate the dishes are really impressive as in Japanese cuisine.<br/>Nice katsu curry don 😊😊😊😊<br/>Friendly staffs 😀<br/><br/>

I went to Yuzu for the second time and decided to break habit and try something different. The first time I went here I got the fried soba (though not realising they were using egg noodles and not buckwheat) and I found the portions good for the price. This time around I went for the katsu curry don and we decided to share a few dishes to start.

Decent casual dining, seems to be a popular option with the CBD working crowd, as it was pretty busy when I dined there. Food isn't too bad, value-for-money bento boxes. The ramen was pretty tasty as well.
Bec
Really delicious! I went with a friend and we decided to share some small plates, we got the edamame, pork gyoza, tempura vegetables, eggplant and scallops. The food was very tasty and I'll definitely be back

Nice ambience. Decent food. Decent prices.<br/><br/>Came here at lunch. Got the tonkustu ramen. Noodles didn't seem too spectacular. Broth was good. Wasn't wowed but nothing to sniff at either.

this place used to be awesome, we'd come here for after work drinks. not too sure whats happened but theres definitely been a drop off in quality of drink and food at this place over the year. On the last lunch visit, we had ramen which lacked a rich tonkatsu flavour, the king fish carpaccio was neither good nor bad and the wafu steak was tender but felt like a cheap cut of meat that i could get at any old fast food place. house sake blend also seems to have changed to a less pleasant brand.

It's a hidden gem for sushi lovers in Melbourne. It was a pleasant surprise to find one of the most authentic sushi in Melbourne. Presentation of the dish was beautiful. Price is reasonable and place is romantic at night.

Named after one of my favourite fruits, the yuzu fruit, Yuzu Cuisine is a popular restaurant for business lunches and drinks on Collins Street. Although the address is noted as 480 Collins Street, the entrance of Yuzu is actually on Church Lane, which is reflected in some places which refer to the restaurant as Yuzu on Church Lane.

The service was slow and the new menu has limited vegan options which isn't very exciting. I was once a fan but am now on the hunt for a replacement.

$65 for 6 makis, 7 nigris and 10 sashimis??? I was expecting 6 rolls (30 makis). What a rip off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would put a 0 if I could!!!

We ordered butter fish, seaweed salad and miso grilled eggplant. Fair portioning. Great flavours. Prompt service. It was a bit quiet the night I visited so couldn't really tell how well staff would handle customers on busy nights. Would come again to try other items on their menu.

Stopped in for a mid week lunch. Packed out for a Thurs but I guess that's a lot of places in the city too. Food was very nice. Started with veggie gyozas. Very flavoursome and really well made. Bit of a spicy dressing on it too. Ordered Katsu Curry for main. It was great. Fried chicken strips in a mild curry. The potatoes and carrots in it were cooked perfectly. Big serving w rice so well worth the price. Service isn't fantastic. 1 person got their main well before the rest of us and my wine didn't come out til after my main. All in all tho, food was awesome, so doesn't matter much.

I order online for deliver and I'm so disappointed. The price so expensive with amount the food the taste is average. I spent $ 82. And my agedashi tofu they forgot to give a sauce or soup (what ever they call) so this is my second time ordering Japanese food online, looks like it's more expensive than eating in.
