Aunty Franklee, I don't know where to start the review or how to review this place. I didn't do proper research before going into the place as my buddy insisted that we get lunch almost immediately when we saw the restaurant. Bak Kut Teh is a pork bone soup made of herbs and spices; a popular dish served in Malaysia and Singapore. Let that be a proper introduction before we get into a detailed review.
Aunty Franklee is a small outlet located in the Russel Street of Melbourne CBD. The staff was amicable and patient enough to explain what a Bak Kut Teh is. I am not a soup person but, I have decided to choose the most recommended dish of this place, the Old Fashioned Bak Kut. Even though the menu says "Much Loved Meat Bone Tea," there is no Tea involved in the dish. It's just a fat creamy bone soup prepared by infusing 23 herbs (sounds healthy) and has port slices, meatballs, ribs, belly, tofu, mushroom, enoki. I have also ordered a cup of rice.
About the dish, there is no wonder they say it is flavorsome as I could taste and smell every sort of spices and herbs. I couldn't finish the whole soup as I was feeling quite full after taking half of it. Thanks to all bone marrow fat. I am glad that I have ordered rice as it helped me take a break from the constant taste of the soup.
Aunty Franklee is one of the authentic places in CBD to have Bak Kut Teh. Since I haven't tried it before there is no room any comparison. However, I could see the popularity of this place, and the way they serve the dish makes me think it is considered to be the authentic place to have this particular Malaysian dish. Until we meet again, keep up the good work guys.
Decided to check out this place through Zomato Gold’s offer.
Absolutely loved it!
Service is fast and really good!
The food was fantastic!
I got the Char Kway Teow and it was the best I’ve ever had!
My friend, who was raised in Singapore, ordered the dry Bak Kut Teh and loved it!
Tried both rice options and definitely recommend the coconut one!
We will be back for more!!
I've passed by a thousand times but finally went in today and boy was it a good decision! Serving up East Malaysian fusion, this quaint little restaurant hit the spot!! Beef ribs and grilled chicken were just so beautifully marinated and cooked to perfection. Staff were very friendly and cheerful too. I think I've found a new favourite!
This small but trendy Malaysian restaurant doesn’t look like much from the front but the inside is decked out well and the food is delicious. I had the chicken turmeric with rice which had a satay sauce and it was really tender and tasty with loads of flavour. The rice was soft and fluffy and cabbage topped it off for a great lunch meal!
Lovely little hole in the wall restaurant with a cosy atmosphere. The staff were lovely and service was fast. Our plates of Char Kuey Teow were piping hot, with generous amounts of prawns, fish cake and Chinese sausage, and a generous serving overall. We will be back to try the beef ribs!
It's amazing that Melbourne could have a place that serves some great tasting bak kuh teh. BKT has always been one of those massive subjective holy grains of Malaysian cuisine, but from my experience, this definitely rates up there. It is a little cramped, it is a little pricey, but the food is really quite amazing. Go for the original BKT with Chinese donut. It comes out very very hot which is great and a serve of very spicy chilly in soy sauce.
Great service with decent food. We ordered old fashioned bak kit teh. It’s quite a lot. Felt very full after finished it. And I also order make my own bak kit teh. If you don’t like some food they added, it’s good choice to choose by your own. Then you won’t get so full haha. It’ll a little bit crowded cause place is small. Except this everything is fine.
Delicious Malaysian food which i miss so much in New York - there just isn’t much over there. Char kuey teow (flat rice noodles sautéed in a wok with bean sprouts, shrimp, fish cake and Chinese sausage - 100000% delish); Malaysian beef rib grill sitting on a peanut/satay sauce with pickled purple cabbage and some “kimchi” slaw type veggies of zucchini and carrots; and their signature old fashioned bak kut teh: bone broth with tea - very unique and super delicious. Loved the Malaysian Borneo milk tea too!
