Review Kedai Satay - Melbourne

Serena Huh
Lamb ribs and grilled barramundi are amazing~the chili sauce they put on the barramundi dish is so amazing too! Too spicy for me, but I can't get enough of it! The venue is nicely presented and service is super friendly šŸ˜

Dropped by for lunch and I wasnā€™t disappointed. There is a large variety of food available for you to choose. Place is crowded during lunch but order taking and food was served very swiftly. Food quality is very authentic based on what I have had previously. Would definitely be back or bring friends here if Iā€™m back in Melbourne.

The beef ribs with yellow rice is amazing. Highly recommended, the meats so tender with nice char flavoured, rice cooked perfectly and not over seasoned! Excellent dish. Canā€™t understand why theyā€™re not that busy.

Casual dining with highlight of the location being yummy food. Ordered beef ribs to share and it was a delight. Meet falling off the bone along with spicy chilli šŸŒ¶ sauce. Can be bundled with rice to complete a meal. Loved the food and minimalistic food menu. Place serves halal food.

Nothing fancy, just delicious traditional Indonesian food that comes out quick and isnā€™t too expensive. The menu is fairly large offering most of the classic Indo dishes. Staff are always friendly and welcoming.

I was here a long time ago (like maybe 6 years ago) and apparently I liked their soto betawi. Came back there recently and I liked their ayam kremes and nasi kuning. Ayam goreng was well cooked and moist inside, and good amount of kremes. Batagor was ok. Es cendol was nice, but picture in menu was deceiving as pictures were all tall glass but you get like goblet glass, so not as big. Sate ayam has nice charcoal grill taste to it, but sauce isnt the best I have had, looked and tasted a bit dilute. I like their tofu salad, tofu was beautiful but it wasnā€™t really Indonesian dressing or salad, itā€™s like coleslaw salad with fried tofu so itā€™s fusion dish. Soto ayam has nice lemongrass flavour but rather too sweet which shouldnā€™t be. Overall it was an okay lunch, but it wasnā€™t cheap (we paid more than $30 per person).

Cannot recommend enough! The beef ribs are amazing. Full of flavour and the meat is so tender and juicy. Reasonably priced too!

Seems like Kedai Satay is the only one (as far as I know) which sells Tahu Gejrot (smashed tofu) that I have been missing soooo much! The sweet, savory & vinegary flavors really hit home for me šŸ‡®šŸ‡© Of course I canā€™t have just that, I needed to get some juicy fried chicken with yellow rice too AND eat it with hand! (I know I know so very Indo of me šŸ˜‚) Funny thing is we went there to try their satay but they actually ran out! So we plan to go back sometime soon or get deliveries so we can finally try their well-known satay šŸ¢

Excellent beef ribs it is so tender n juicy, very authentic taste. Soto betawi was perfect just enough creaminess yet so generous with the toppings! My 7yo really loves the grilled chicken n rice! Went here for few times and never disappoints us! Recommend!ļæ½

Possibly the worst Asian food Iā€™ve eaten in Melbourne ... the meat was cold and the sauces were burnt
Nabeel Aziz
Excellent place to eat. Ribs are awesome. I tried few dishes and all found to be really great. Very intriguing sauce. We go often during lunch breaks. Must try if in CBD. Halal food.

Friendly staff and good food! Can't really ask for more here~

Excellent food! Meat falls off the bone and delicious! Waitors very nice and friendly. Good value!

The food is awesome!!! The Ayam goreng is crispy and yet juicy at the same time, you can taste the turmeric and it is not overpowering. Chicken satay is nicely charred grilled and yummy. Value for money and the rojak is very authentic and all in All, yummy.. !!! Definitely going back for more soon!!!

Love the food, tasty and yummy. Remind me of home taste. Looking forward to go back there and have some more Indonesian food.

Great service, great food!

I assume it is changed of ownership. These new people didnt know nasi uduk was actually coconut rice. We ordered takeaway last night. NONE was edible. Yucky!

Very good authentic indo food

Ayam Kremes. Love it!

In love I am!

This used to be our favorite restaurant. Ordered a take away of Ayam Bakar & Chicken skewers. Completely disappointed with both the dishes. Ayam Bakar grilled chicken was very chewy and chicken skewers were very bland. My wife had to top it with salt and even then we couldnā€™t finish the food completely. Iā€™ll never be ordering at this place again!

We don't usually venture out to this end of town but having heard good things about Kedai Satay, we decided to make the trip. Boy, it was definitely worth it!

We had:

Nasi kuning balado with eggs, tofu and potatoes. This was delicious and had a terrific spicy kick to it.

Grilled lamb ribs on white rice. For 50 cents extra, you get yellow rice, a must! The yellow rice was just scrumptious while the grilled lamb was tender and fell off the bone. The sambal was spicy.

Chendol was amazingly sweet and satisfying.

Service was friendly and prices were very reasonable. The place had a nice ambience. We will definitely be back.

We went for dinner. Not much for vegetarian but my non veg colleagues liked the ribs and beef.
Stefan Awad
Before we decided to come we were talking about ribs being $40 everywhere you go but this place is something else. The lamb ribs just fell off the bone and were tender and juicy. The chicken satay skewers were also tender which is awesome because itā€™s always dry at other places. Itā€™s super cheap as well and the coconut rice was actually coconuty. Also a can of soft drink is $2.5 which is pretty cheap. The only bad thing I would say which isnā€™t really a bad thing because itā€™ll happen everywhere you go is that the beef and lamb were a little bit fatty.
Eat_today_diet_tomorrow
a really place to go to for a quick lunch. They have many rice dishes you can choose from. I had the beef ribs on rice and was impressed. There is quite a generous amount of meat, flavourful and delicious.
Big Fat Layer
Great flavors! Beef in the soup was a bit cold, lamb ribs lost the lamb flavor otherwise I would give 5 stars.

I have been dining at this restaurant for several years and their standard has not dropped since my first visit!

I would recommend their yellow rice as it is flavourful and fragrant. Beef ribs - tender and well marinated. Grilled chicken - perfectly cooked with tenderness. The sauces are great too.

Please try it out if you love Indonesian cuisine!
TheHangryTurtle
Service was quick, friendly and professional for a Friday afternoon after the lunch time rush. Indonesian style cuisine grill venue so bear that in mind if your first time venturing into this establishment with the difference in flavours from your usual western bbq grill.
I've tried both the beef and lamb and both are great. Cooked tender with an Indonesian style peanut sauce, salad and chilli sauce on the side.
Try the yellow rice if you are carbohydrate inclined....

Always return to this place from time to time and always, delicious with quick, friendly service.

Being a Southeast asian, I couldn't find any reason not to love this place! It's a very cosy restaurant, don't expect any nice interior. The service is really good, everyone there was super polite with all smiles.

The menu has a pretty good variety, i think it fits everyone, even those not from an asian background. It has a pretty good portion eith reasonable price. I had the ayam penyet with tempe, the kremes was super crunchy and the sambal was up to my standard! Pretty spicy but really savoury. I also had the chicken satay (skewers) and I have to admit it's one of the best I've ever had in Melbourne!

Would definitely come back for a second visit again.
Eatenbymae
I love their food!!! Tasty, delicious and authentic Indonesian food that leaves you craving for the next bite! Well charred on the outside yet succulent on the inside, their meats are all cooked to tender perfection.

Cane here with a bunch of friends for lunch. It's super busy when we arrived. We waited about 5 mins, you have to order first before seated

We order thai milk and satay chicken skewer and beef skewer. The seating is very crammed and we have to seat upstairs on the balcony. And the table feels very stick and it doesn't feel clean. So if you are looking for a comfortable business lunch then this is not the place for you

Food wise is ok skewer is done well consider the price. But you would only come here for a quick functional lunch .
We.eat.travel.love
Love the food at this place and I quite often opt this for the lunchtime meals. I specifically love their Gado gado topped with grilled chicken. Other than that their pork/lamb ribs are also very nice. Apart from these you can pretty much have anything and it will be good.
Prices are average and they have two levels of seating space. it is quite busy at peak times.

Great Indonesian satays for those Indo cravings! The chicken satays are a must try. With delicious peanut sauce, it definitely hits the spot - although it could be thicker, robust and more ooomph for those peanut lovers. Personally also love the pempek! One of the best Indo restaurants in the city!

When itā€™s Satay you are at the right place. Kedai Satay will mesmerise you with its orgasmic flavoursome food options. Lamb is the best with coconut rice
Megan
I came here twice already. The first time I tried their 5 skewers of Chicken satays and Coconut rice - very tasty!!! I came back to order their Lamb ribs grilled, so soft that the meat fell off the bone and melted.... totally recommended this place. Bonus point: so cheap, only $11-14 only!
All About The Food
Delicious Indonesian food, well balanced flavour easy to finish the full plate. We always get lamb ribs and chicken satay skewers. Mild bbq flavour with chili (sambal) on the side so you can add if you like spicy or leave out of you don't. Been at least 10 times and will continue.

4.5
A tucked away Indonesian eatery in the CBD.

Been here few times. The place is a bit small but not so crampy also bit dim, with some seats outside and at the back. The staffs were pretty friendly, food came out pretty quick, though it's a bit hard to get their attention as they are mainly busy at the counter.

The soto betawi was so good, had it with the ribs (without the bones) and the meat was tender and pretty flavourful. The soup itself was very flavourful, not overly sweet nor salty, just right to eat with rice and the tomato and fried potatoes tasted added the right texture and taste. My korean friend loved it.

Had this with yellow rice which was pretty fragrant and bit coconuty, a bit on the dry side (like basmati rice). There were some kerupuk (fried crackers) and chili paste on the side as well which was yummy.

The ayam tahu tempe kremes (fried chicken with tofu and soybean cake) was great as well.
They weren't too oily nor overcooked. Chicken still had that juice and was well marinated. There were the kremes (fried flour flakes) on the side which added a nice texture plus fresh vegs! Love the cabe rawit (a type of chilli) paste on the side, though my friend found it too spicy (despite being able to eat really spicy korean food lols), but my Indonesian tounge liked it just right.

Update: went back and had the exact same thing. This time they gave 3 pieces of chicken! Really great Indo food.

Overall a great place for indo food!

( follow for more!āœØ)

ļ½˜ļ½˜ļ¼Œļ½Šļ½ļ½…ļ½Œļ½Œļ½…

šŸ˜±Lizzieā€™s first impression: looks a bit dingy at first but youā€™ll find it is very popular during lunch times and even busier during dinner.

šŸ©Lizzie enjoyed: my most favourite dish are the lamb ribs with satay sauce. It is deliciously smoked and it goes so well with rice.

šŸ…Lizzie did not enjoy: disclaimer if youā€™re a health freak, this store is not for you!! The ribs are quite oily and not for an everyday meal.

šŸ„‡Lizzie rates overall: honestly a great place for ribs and fair prices.

Kedai satay or satay shop, is a casual restaurant serving classic Indonesian dishes and is an expert in grilled meat. Hereā€™s what I got:. 1. Grilled Beef Ribs on Yellow Rice. Grilled beef ribs on yellow rice ($14.50)Close-up of that smokey grilled meat. First look and I was immediately impressed with the generous pile of meaty beef ribs covered in peanut sauce. The meat is grilled over direct flame that gave nice bits of charred crust and most importantly, perfumed the meat with some serious smokey flavour. No kidding, it was that fragrant!
Priscillia
Best Indonesian Satay in Melbourne! Normally we go here just to order the chicken satay and beef ribs to share. Not a great idea if you are allergic to peanut. The sauce is so rich with peanuts and sweet soy sauce. The ribs are so tender. Great value of money!
@_@
This is my favourite Indonesian place so far. Love the grilled lamb ribs to the bone (pun intended). The lambā€™s so tender and juicy and just comes off the ribs. Itā€™s authentic and gets really packed during lunch time.

Delicious foodĀ and feed with a very reasonable price point!!Ā

The lamb ribs and chicken is just unbelievable. The lamb ribs fall right off the bone and there is so much flavor in the tropical grilled chicken.Ā

This place is instantly becomeĀ a staple for me and my partner!

One of my fav places to eat lunch during a work day. Their beef ribs and rice is mouthwateringly good. I think I went here 3 days in a row when I found this place. Highly recommended!!
StepiiGM
Very happy with their fried chicken meal, spicy sambal and yellow rice (extra $0.50). Soto ayam was very bland though, and their cendol was way too sweet and overwhelming.

food here is good and the place is clean and staff is friendly but the area is quite small. If you like Malaysian cuisine then do give this place a try.
Shweta
Fast service amazing portion size. The service was friendly. We had the grilled beef ribs . It was so good. The meat was tender and flavourful. Busy place. Will definitely go back!!

A very busy Indonesian eatery. Decent priced and filling.

Beef ribs is amazing. Aromatic, meat easily breaks apart and the dressing on the salad is great.

Chicken satay is well charred and juicy.

Kedai Satay is a humble restaurant that keeps it simple - serving up Indonesian classics. We ordered Grilled Lamb Ribs and Chicken Skewers, both with rice as well as two servings of Fried Wontons...initially one serving but they were just too good. Delightfully crispy on the outside with a soft, savoury prawn interior, one plate simply wasn't enough. The Grilled Lamb Ribs were oh so tender and fell off the bone with ease. The peanut sauce, in conjunction with the chilli sauce and sauced salad, gave you equally wonderful choices for each mouthful. The satay chicken was just as wonderful, I could easily see both mains appearing in a street market vendor in Indonesia. Simple, cheap and tasty, Kedai Satay will satisfy lovers of Asian food.

Judging by its unassuming exterior, you wouldnā€™t expect this place to serve good-quality food but Kedai Satay surprises with its incredible Indonesian dishes. In fact, itā€™s some of the best youā€™ll find in Melbourne.

As someone who frequents Indonesia, itā€™s good to find some genuine dishes here - the Ayam Goreng and Pempek are quite legit. However, I canā€™t comment on the legitimacy of the lamb ribs as Iā€™ve never had it in Indonesia - but I can say that itā€™s amazing; the meat falls right off the bone, the sauce and sambal are delicious, and the servings are generous.

Apart from the food, the service is quite nice and the environment is okay; itā€™s small but warm. Iā€™d definitely recommend this place if youā€™re looking for some basic but delicious Indonesian food (especially the lamb ribs).

Went here with a group of work colleagues. I checked out the ratings before leaving and they were promising. All I can say is the ratings were 100% accurate and the food was amazing!!!!!! I had the 5 chicken satay skewers, rice an extra chilli and my plate was nearly licked dry. Pity I was there during work hours because if not, I would have had 6 beers - very cheap. I will be a regular at Kedai.

After reading a raving review from Mustard, I decided to give Kedai Satay King a try.Ā Being the only westerner in this restaurant I had a feeling I'd be in for a real treat.

I was torn between the chicken satay or the beef ribs, the ribs won me over. I paid the extra 50c to get the yellow rice, glad I did as the taste was great.Ā The rice is cooked with coconut cream and you can definitely taste it.Ā The beef ribs exceeded my expectations, the flavour took me back to Asia.Ā No holding back on the spices here, the meat was sooooo tender and with the taste of the flame grill, delish!! The sambal was an excellent addition, I even asked for more! Love my spice and the whole dish was really good.

Great value for money and I would like to go back and try the chicken satay.
Naomi Wu
Had this from Ubereats. It was really good! Great selection, the flavour of sambal wasn't spicy which is a shame but I like the flavours of the fried chicken and turmeric rice. Well done.
Michreviews
Food was SO GOOD! Meat packed with lots of flavour. And most importantly, they used charcoal to grill the meats so they had that very intense smokey flavour in meat that is not easily found elsewhere. We ordered 5 chicken satay skewers, Grilled beef ribs and ayam goreng. Everything was very delicious. The peanut sauce that came with the satay and beef ribs was very flavourful. Glad I checked Zomato for what is/are the ā€˜must orderā€™ dish(es). Some parts of the beef was a little tough for my liking. We chose coconut rice for the ayam goreng which perfectly matches with the chicken. Will visit again!

This place was just around the corner from my AirBnb on my last holiday in Melbourne. I went there for my breaklunch shortly after they opened and I'm glad I got there so early, as the place was packed as soon as I had placed my order! The guys there know their stuff, plus the menu is small so they were smashing out orders within minutes of them being placed.

I went hard considering I have braces and was still getting used to the latest tighten, no yellow rice for me either in case I stain the damn things too. I got the grilled lamb ribs with peanut sauce with rice. The lamb ribs were so well cooked to tender perfection, I picked up a bone and the meat just fell off! Perfect for my tender mouth. I wasn't able to eat the salad due my chewing issues. The peanut sauce was really good too, I wish I could've gotten another dose of the stuff. The sambal sauce on the side wasn't bad but I've had better.

I got the ayam kremes, fried chicken with fried crispy bite on no rice as my side dish. No idea why because I wasn't expecting a maryland chunk of meat coming my way. I did not finish this. The chicken was very crispy but otherwise the meat was a touch bland, thankfully the green sambal on the side had a punchy, spicy kick plus a good dousing of that kecap manis on the side helped too!The portions here are very large and cheap, so maybe order less than you usually do. Or don't, you do you fam. The service here is very quick too! Perfect for a quick lunch.

Hands down THE BEST Indonesian food I have ever had. A favourite whenever I am in the city. Go for the Lamb Ribs or Beef Ribs with rice. Or the satay. The charcoal flavours in their meats.. out of this world. I could also lick the satay sauce off the plates if I wasn't conscious about what other diners would think of me, lol.
Gee
Wow! After a string of disappointing CBD eating experiences at much pricier and far hipper joints, I decided I needed to go back to simple and tasty. This place hit the spot! Had the 5 chicken skewers with coconut rice for $14 and it was delish! The sambal was perfect and decently spicy too. Iā€™ll be back here within a fortnight Iā€™m guessing!

Cozy little eatery along King St. If you only get one thing, get the beef ribs! The sauce on those ribs are something else. Nothing like ribs, rice, a little salad and sambal. However, if you can't handle spice, keep away from the sambal!

Good value for quick dinner.. we ordered chicken satay skewers ($10.5) & grilled beef ribs with rice ($12.50) + $0.50 upgrade to yellow rice.. meat is juicy & tender with lots of peanut sauce.. food was serving quick too.. must try Indon restaurant in Melbourne..
Mustard
A tight menu specialising in flame grilled meats and as the name suggests, satay. They didn't have any lamb skewers ready but we were happy to sample their chicken skewers which were tender and had a lovely smokiness to them from being char grilled. The copious amounts of satay was welcome as we lapped up that sauce even with the vegetables provided, mmm nutty.

As a main I got the lamb ribs over garlic rice (yellow rice). Rice wasn't as fragrant as I'd like but the lamb was super tender falling off the bone and got a similar treatment of sauce dousing. The sambal was a welcome addition to cut through the richness. Portions are very generous and the grilled chicken looked fantastic also.

Food comes flying out pretty fast, all they have to do is BBQ that piece of meat before making its way to your table. Tables filled up fast, I can see why the office workers love this joint, quick, tasty and good value.

Kedai Satay has the best Indonesian food I've tried in Melbourne! Live their nasi goreng with crispy and delicious chicken, and all their grilled beef and lamb! Service is fast and friendly too!

This is the place to visit when you are craving for satay with peanut sauce. Came here for dinner after work. It's a small cozy restaurant in CBD. We don't have to wait long for the food. The meat is tender and the portion is big enough to feed our hungry belly.
Amid
Came here for a dinner after work. Reasonable pricing and good quality chicken is cooked well with lots of seasoning, spicy and crisp. Good place for a cheap bite and enjoying authentic Indonesian meal.
Zillily
Been here with my friend, we order beef ribs with coconut and chicken satay skewers, the rice was good, reasonable price, the chicken skewers were cold from the inside, hopefully it will be better next time.
Linda
What a gem of a place!!!
The meals are all wonderfully marinated with their beautiful sauces. The meat was cooked to perfection. Moist and tasty!
Quick, efficient and friendly service. Huge portions for a small price. Will be back for more and more!!!
Peterrabbit
This is one of my go-to place for lunch with colleagues. I always have the beef with coconut rice plus a little bit of the sambal chilli on the side. Yum Yum Yum!! At the end of the meal, I always feel satisfied. If you go there for lunch, make sure you go early before the crowd start to turn up.
Flying Forward
A proper Indonesian restaurant with a grill, this is a great find for authentic cuisine.
The lamb and beef ribs are slow cooked and finished off on the flame grill.
The beef is really soft, with great flavour and a good balance of fat.
It's topped with a coconutty, peanut sauce which is like a loose satay sauce.
You get quite a good portion, which is awesome value at $12.50.
Similarly the lamb ribs have a good lamby flavour and just slide off the bone.
I love this kind of food - it's very homely and no nonsense.
Also the beer is dead cheap.
Liuconglong
I ordered a grilled sliced beef today. They serve the food really fast. They grill with coal I think, so the beef is smoky as BBQ should be, although a bit charring but still good enough. The soy sauce is tasteful.
Jesskaar
Oh my god I love this place. Itā€™s my go-to Friday lunch place with my colleagues after some lengthy waits at the bustling Banoi a few blocks away.

I get the lamb ribs with yellow coconut rice every time without fail. Itā€™s melt in your mouth, dreamy stuff and beats any American BBQ rib Iā€™ve ever encountered in Melbourne. Itā€™s cooked over coals so itā€™s charred, smoky and moreish - everything a rib should be.

If youā€™re feeling especially greedy (like me all the time) just grab a side of corn fritters and wash it all down with a teh kotak. You wonā€™t be disappointed, I promise.

It gets super busy during lunch times so be sure to get there before 12 to avoid lines and get a table!
Boey
I love the grilled chicken with rice dish. Chicken is so tender but full of flavour. The chilli sauce is very spicy but so super yummy. Staff is always friendly.
Camila JosƩ Reyes
What a gem!
Iā€™ve passed outside of this place for over a year and was never tempted to go in because itā€™s outside is not very appealing. Looks can be deceiving and these certainly are!
We had the beef coconut soup, corn appetiser and the lamb skewers! It was delicious!
Will certainly be back to try more off the menu... What a discovery!
The Dear Luncher
Indonesian food isnā€™t all that easy to come by in the West End of the CBD. This was The Dear Luncherā€™s debut Indonesian experience.

A lot of people raving about the satay at Kedai. The Dear Luncher did not find it to be as high-grade as some other reviewers have suggested. For want of a better expression it was a tad inconsistent. The beef ribs were decent enough and plentiful when you order the main, but again, there was inconsistency with the tenderness of these ribs. Some parts were incredibly moist, others a little dry. The smoky flavour emanating from this particular dish was also a little off-kilter for The Dear Luncher. Perhaps this is purely down to not being used to the cuisine, but it just had something about it that didnā€™t allow for supreme enjoyment. It is hard to put a finger on exactly what the issue was here but there was just some kind of odd taste lingering with these beef ribs. Also just a tad alarming how quickly the food came out, and the restaurant was at capacity. The Dear Luncher believes it took a total of about 4 minutes from sitting down for the beef ribs to arrive.

After eating there was noticeable thirst from the salt levels in the food. A few hours later that same level of mouth dryness is present.

The Dear Luncher is of the view that there must be something that he has missed here. The reviews are overwhelmingly positive, and yet the experience had by The Dear Luncher did not really marry up with the expectations.

Very delicious Indonesian food. My go to dish is the beef ribs with yellow rice and soda gembira. The portion is quite big and itā€™s very affordable.
Cookieraider2002
so yum their ribs are so tender and saucy and mmm oh lord guys you gotta try. In addition with the rice and the salad you'll be leaving full and satisfied!

When i and my family in melbourne, we almost everyday visit this restaurant due to delicious food. We ussualy order their skewer, coconut rice, gado-gado, soto betawi, tahu tempe and etc. almost all their delicious menu we have already tasted, and still great until now. We really recommended this restaurant for you..
Jenny PriƱa
I've been here few times with friends and family. Most of the food in the menu are worth to try and delish. I really like their Grilled beef ribs tho, so tender.
Christopher Jayakar
A little gem on kings street, they are famous for their ribs, and they tasted amazing, a good place for Indonesian food, and the prices are very economical
Gerd Pranoto
I love their Makassar style Grilled Beef Ribs on rice. The portion is quite generous for $12.50. The ribs is nice and tender. The only beef (pun intended) I have with the dish is that the rice is too soggy. I'm definitely coming back to try other stuff.
J0yy173
Think smokey satays and ribs and skillful use of spices that create simple and tasty Indonesian meals. The coconut yellow rice is definitely worth the the extra $0.50. Five skewers of grilled chicken satay on rice for $13 is really good value, given the generous serve.

There're a range of drinks including Avocado Juice, Ice Teler (jackfruit, lychee, coconut and grass jelly on ice) and A&W root beer Float to transport your taste buds to Indonesia.

Tonight we were here with a friend from Jakarta and she took care of the ordering for us all to share. Every dish was bursting with flavour and texture. We had such a great meal sharing with everyone and introducing new friends to this cuisine. After all these years, this place still deserves many return visits.

I come here 3-4 times a month. Usually for late lunch or early dinner.

Food: 4.75/5 - super tasty and delicious food. The grilled meats have very strong charcoal taste which is great. The coconut rice is very fragrant. Try the beef ribs, lamb ribs, tropical chicken and satay they are all great! The deep fried ribs I had once was too dry but still taste good.

Service: 4/5 - friendly and fast. Young Indonesian kids who look like the enjoy working there. Thatā€™s very important for me as a customer just like the review I gave for Suda a korean eatery.

Ambience: 2.5/5 - mediocre. Not somewhere enjoyable when it comes to furniture or decor. No music. Dimmed and looks a bit frumpy but who cares!! The food still outlines everything

Value for money: 4.75/5 - definitely come here and pay cheap price for really good food!
Varun Kumar
This place is godly.
I cant beleive i did not know of this place before.

I had the beef it just melted in your mouth the sauce is overwhelmingly good. Then you got this chilli sambal with it and some cocunut rice. The meat was really just of the highest quality. I am going to turn into a regular soon.
MF
Had soto betawi and bakwan jagung when i was there and the soto betawi was super yummy! Plenty of meat pieces inside and the broth was rich and not too watery. The bakwan jagung was not my cup of tea as it was smoother by sweet chilli sauce and a bit too dark for my liking. Take away some other things for my friend and he said it was awesome too :)
Not to forget the service was good.

2/6ā€™18

Our dinner tonight was terrible, the soto betawi that i always ordered was bland and the taste was just different, was it because i always ate it for lunch? This is the first time im having dinner there and definitely the place was way more crowded.
The gado gado was bland in terms of not much herb and spices inside, it was only sweet, i rather they use the peanut sauce mixed with the instant gado gado paste to make the taste better.
It was the first time we ordered Kari and what was that? Curdled yellow broth, it didnt look edible and also taste weird.. the empek empek wasnt even warm, the fishcake seem soaked in the sauce forever before they served it, it already changed colour.. only the ribs was good, thats like the safest choice to order in this place really.
Such a disappointment as we brought along our friends, and they dont eat indonesian food that often, and now maybe they think that indonesian food are terrible.. oh well..
A Sandy Wijaya Rifai
I have been here with friend of mine. I ordered grilled beef with yellow rice. The taste is nice and delicous. The portion is big enough for me and than the yellow rice also tasty. I love the sambal eventhough I don't really eat sambal.

I believe this is my first Indonesian restaurant in Melbourne, so glad I found one that serves great food. I ordered the Spicy Tofu and the Ayam Goreng, both were wonderfully crispy and well condimented. Very comfortable decor and staff were very friendly. Would like to have seen more menu options but I fully enjoyed what I ate. Thank you and good work!

This is the best Indonesian food we've ever eaten - and it was better than any food we ate in Indonesia. The curry beef soup, grilled chicken satay and lamb ribs were amazing - and the flavours were enhanced by the sambal belacan chili sauce. It was also excellent value for money.

It's been a few years since I've been here - glad that I'm finally back! The place has a great variety of Indonesian food and I ordered the Beef Ribs with Yellow Rice. The Yellow Rice was aromatic and I loved the tenderness of the beef! I would've given the place a 4 based on the ribs, but I also got the Soto and it was overpoweringly sweet. Neverthless, I'm excited to go back again for more authentic Indonesian cooking. Wish they were on Ubereats!

Delicious - Kedai satay has not disappoint me so far.

Ayam Tahu Tempeh kremes upgraded to yellow rice - this meal comes with salad and sambal terasi (chilli with shrimp paste etc). The Maryland they used is at a decent size and is marinated and cook to perfection. Tahu (beancurd) and Tempeh (fermented soybeans in cube form) are fried to crisp and not oily. The salads leaves and tomatoes are fresh. The sambal terasi is the bomb. So good so well balance. The heat, the shrimp paste, the sourness is like a fireworks in my mouth. Lifted the whole meal to the new level. The yellow rice is a bit too hard to my liking but the flavour is so good so fragrant. No stingy-ness in coconut milk and herbs / spiced they use. Kremes is a crunchy bits not sure what is it make of.
Have it with a spoonful of rice.. it's just heaven.

Beef ribs kremes on rice also served with salad and sambal terasi. The ribs... again marinated and cook to perfection. The smokiness of the ribs are just way to awesome. Again, the sambal terasi lift this meal to a whole new level. However, the amount of beef ribs serve is too little.

Have this with sweet soy sauce they provide. Trust me this sweet soy sauce fit in the meal so well. Drizzle it on rice if you like.

Service wise it's pretty minimum. Place your order at the counter and grab your own cutlery, glasses and water. As long as the cashier / order taker and floor staff did not give me a sour face and did not throw the plates on the table when serving I am happy with this minimum service place.

P/s I am already craving for the yellow rice and sambal terasi.

OMG the satay sauce...I thought I didn't like satay sauce until I came to this place.

Ribs are to die for - hardest bit it deciding whether to go lamb or beef, both are fantastic.

Went in for lunch with colleague, quite crowded, make sure you go early before the peak time.

I forgot to take photo for the fried chicken kremes, I'm not too sure what's the crispy stuff on top of the fried chicken, nothing too special and don't know what will be the true difference with the standard fried chicken, but I love their chillies sauce.

My friend ordered the beef, taste good too and again the chillies sauce was great, love the spiciness.

Will definitely come back to try out more.

Always good no matter what I ordered.

I love the satay for the smokey taste to it. I like the Ayam Kremes and Es Teler is a bomb. I'd say try and keep going back to try more. It's worth the trips.

The food was really good, service was on point šŸ‘ŒšŸ» Been here a lot of times because the food worth the money.. Will definitely came back to this restaurant

Decided to come here for a family dinner, as we walked in there was no "hi, how are you?" no acknowledgement whatsoever, he just grabbed menus and walked towards a table without saying anything, is this a joke? As soon as we sat down we didn't feel too comfortable to continue so we left without ordering. I get it's a small diner/Cafe but that doesn't mean the staff members can provide shitty customer service to consumers. Anyway, I wouldn't consider going back to be honest.

Cannot go past the beef ribs at this place! I get them every time I come here with coconut rice and they do not disappoint. The flavour is all there, the meat is great, and the serving is large. The beer is also cheap which helps :) Love coming here for lunch.

Kedai Satay has been operating for a while and it is well known for Indonesian restaurant in Indonesian community around Melbourne CBD.The restaurant was spacious, they have plenty seats downstairs / outdoors as well as upstairs if they're getting busy. The interior design was quite fancy and clean. They put an authentic Indonesian ornaments and arts inside.
The customer service was good. It's a self service hospitality business model in this restaurant. Glasses, bottle of water, cutlery and other additional sauces are put in the shelf next to fridge and in front of the counter.

We ordered their signature dish "Grilled Beef Ribs on rice" for $12.00.The beef was grilled perfectly with the great colour; The grilled beef was tender, soft and juicy ***RECOMMENDED!!The beef was well seasoned, perfect balance.

In addition, the dish was served with fresh salad on the side, Indonesian sambal and traditional peanut sauce. It would be a perfect match if you add little bit sweet soy sauce as most of Indonesians do.*Beware* of Indonesian chili, it was absolutely fantastic if you like spicy food.

Note : Worth to ask for a free additional sambal. Sometimes you'll get free or else they'll charge you a small amount of money.Overall, we'd really enjoyed their signature dish and definitely would come back to try their other dishes.

Unfortunately, the portion wasn't really generous enough and it was slightly overprice compared to other Indonesian restaurants.Couple of mates from the group were saying that the portion was getting less and less compared to the last time they came few months ago.

Service : 3.0
Taste : 4.5
Price : 2.5
Speed : 4.0

Location : 186 King Street, Melbourne CBD, 3000
Phone : 03 9640 0371

Basic setting, good food and fast service!I've been here numerous times and always left satisfied. Queue can be long specially on Fridays so come before the lunch rush hour.

Good satay, good lamb ribs, also had the tahu tempe kremes which was great too. Excellent all around

The place does have a smoke smell, but what do you expect, there's a lot of grilling going on

Came here with a group of friends. We shared everything we ordered. The satay chicken skewers were must order, the chicken was moist and tender. The satay flavour was rich but not over powering. Beef ribs cooked beautifully too, meat cooked tender and off the bone. Gado gado salad was average, but the fried tofu was very nice. Fish cakes was nice too, I can have them without the sauce as it was a bit too sweet for me. Curry soup was the only thing I didn't like on the night. Not much curry flavour yet too salty to my liking
Overall, nice dinner, good value for money too. Highly recommended if you are keen to try Indonesian food.

Ordered grilled beef ribs with peanut sauce, fried chicken, tofu & tempeh (fermented soybean) with fried bits and spicy tofu (tahu gejrot). Food was all tasty and portions were really generous, couldn't finish everything between the 2 of us. The highlight was the beef ribs in peanut sauce - very well cooked and smoky flavour and nice chilli. The salad dressing for the side salad was a little bland. The chicken dish was also cooked well, always love the fried bits (kremes). The spicy tofu sauce was a little too much like what we eat Indonesian fishcakes (pempek) with, may a good helping of garlic and some chilli. Not bad, but just a little unlike what I am used to having. Will be back for the beef ribs!

Have been coming to this restaurant for years, and have to admit it keeps going on strength to strength, I felt like it tastes better now than few years prior.

Definitely go for the Lamb/Beef Ribs and how can you forget the satay? Delicious melting meat then drizzled over with peanut sauce, kicap manis and rice. Great place to bring friends and introduce them to indulgent Indonesian food.

The ambience is quite when you get in early. Otherwise, you might find yourself at the end of a long line. They serve really fast but be cautious when you order grilled chicken. I've return several pink chickens myself but other than that the food is nice. Another thing to note is they have big servings (not really a problem though if you ask me).

It is hard not to rate this 5 star due to everything is perfect for me! This shop opened for many years and all friends who went there weren't disappointed as I told them to order then lamb ribs on rice or beef ribs on rice. Haven't tried others due to my obsess with lamb ribs! But going there just for this is enough!

You can smell the flamed grilled meat from a mile away as Kedai smokes up the cheapest and tastiest flamed grilled ribs served on yellow coconut rice. This place is packed during lunch because $12.50 gets you a hearty good meal. I love the beef ribs more than the lamb all served with peanut sauce, coconut rice at 50c extra and salad. What a bargain !

Honestly lamb satay really nice and not forget the chicken satay with the peanut sauce ^^ totally tasty. With the belacan and spicy sauce really perfect match. Recommend drink with " soda gembira " and lastly the fried chicken not bad . Overall price reasonable and taste of food and drinks well done, thumbs up . Cheers

Good decent indo food....cheap(price is reflected in table service) .downfall is everything order at counter. Do try the pempek...nothing like Palembang but worth a bite.

I rarely go to Indonesian restaurants because I don't really miss it when I'm here. So when my Korean friends wanted to try Indonesian food, there are only two places I'd go and Kedai Satay is one of them. We went on Thursday for lunch and this place was packed with people. You have to order and pay at the counter first and there was a long line yesterday. I ordered the beef ribs with yellow rice and soto betawi. My friends really liked them and kept saying how good they were so Mission Accomplished!

Really enjoy the food there and my favorite is grilled lamb ribs!!! That's the one I must order every time! I went there with my roommate at least once per week. Cheap and delicious! Recommend!!!

Wow, authentic charcoal cooking in the heart of Melbourne. Went here for a quick lunch after dropping relatives off at Southern Cross Station. Open on Sunday with several people already eating. Order at counter after being seated. Prices are good and wide selection of dishes. Ordered chicken satay sticks with rice and salad. Came out quickly, amazing flavour, fresh, really nice. Decor is good, basic, clean, not bad at all. Will definitely return next time we are in the city.

Last Saturday's weather could not have been any kinder, considering that it is still summer here in Australia. A cool breeze greeted me the moment I stepped out of the train station and at every turn into the little city alleys. What may seem like a long stroll to our foodie destination turned out to be a calming walk down memory lane as I slowly recalled my first few steps in this unknown city.

Haven't been here in ages, but I am glad that I came back. If you like Indonesian grilled dishes, this place is probably one of the best ones in the city. We ordered chicken satay which was yummy and tender. It lacked of peanut sauce, but it was totally fine, as I know some satay is even prepared with just soy sauce. The other dish, beef ribs, was equally great. It had plenty of fat, which was grilled in a nice way. As for the drink, we ordered thai milk tea which was okay. It wasn't sweet so some of you might prefer it that way. This place also sold root beer, a personal favourite fizzy drink.

Fast, fresh, cheap and delicious. Pretty basic casual dining set up inside, got the chicken satays, nicely char grilled, came with rice and a basic green salad. Wife got the lamb skewers. Came out fast. 10-15 mins, bonus points for the self serve $5.50 per beer fridge. Friendly service too. Overall a good, quick meal. We were in and out before our gig in 40 mins. Two meals and four beers came to about $50. Can't beat that.

Been here for lunch on a Friday. A popular joint and we were lucky to get a table for 7. I ordered a Grilled Beef Ribs in coconut rice +Sambal chilli.
It was good for its price but would order the ribs next time on its own.
Tiny place on King Street that provided a pleasant experience, though certainly not the most authentic Indonesian food I've had. The satay was the highlight really. They were nice and tender, with reasonable marinade applied and a hint of charcoal flavour. Once again though, I've had better. The satay sauce is too thick and creamy, while at the same time the flavour is lacking some oomph. It tastes like it's a bit on the old side too. The pempek was not up to scratch, but it's hard to find authentic pempek almost anywhere from what I hear. This one was all fried skin but minimal filling. The texture wasn't quite as legit either. I found the gado gado to be very sub-par. It was drowning in runny sauce and contained one or two eggs, which was terribly stingy. The tropical grilled chicken was not bad, but could have been more flavourful and more charcoal grilled. Finally, the beef ribs were wet, oily, tasty and overall just fine. I thoroughly enjoyed my ice teler drink. It's probably all of my favourite Asian drinks rolled into one, with Asian tropical fruits, creamy coconut, grass jelly and rose water.
To be honest, if I was seeking Indonesian food, I wouldn't come back here. It doesn't really hit the spot completely but will taste good if you're very hungry.

Amazing value for money ribs. Delicious and cheap. Not too much in terms of service but staff is nice and seating is not bad. Plenty of really tasty drinks that are also not expensive. Been here a few times and it is always consistently good

Average in term of both quality & quantity, would probably expect a better treatment from the staff, not sure if I got what I paid for, anyway, thanks (y)

The food was amazing with reasonable price. A good spot for a quick lunch break with colleague. Chicken Satay and the Beef ribs - highly recommended
