Review Tipsy Village - Melbourne

Found this hidden treasure!!! Such a lovely restaurant, can tell from every corner every wall that it was full of dedication and passion. Indoor and outdoor seating are both lovely, the menu is full of surprises! You can order those typical cafe breakfast but highly recommend you to try the Polish dishes! The food was presented with perfect plating and the right portion. I was so fascinated by the bar and its wall of jam/ fruit. Staff members were amazing, very helpful and friendly, all of them seemed to love working there! Will definitely go back again!

Love this place!! Food, drinks and Peter, who is the owner and an amazing host. He will approach to tell you stories and make you laugh. Food is just delicious and the place is a total gem with a lot of charm. My fresh squeezed Orange juice (or mimosa, up to you) it was delicious, the orange juice was in a jar and I was able to top up three times! Vitamin C in a cold Sunday. We are planning to come back for dinner and try the dumplings. Thanks Peter for the laughs and stories.

A gorgeous find with the most delicious Polish food! Paul our host was amazing and looked after our table of 16 for our Christmas dinner. All of the food was so tasty and delicious. The wines were perfect and the shots at the end of the night completed a fantastic dinner experience. Highly recommended.

Gorgeous little place to sit across from South Melbourne Market. All the servers are wonderful and lovely and have very quick service. The menu is quite wide in terms of breakfast to lunch, however all the food is prepared quickly, and fresh. The presentation of the food is also lovely and I love the feeling of home I have when I eat their food.

Hands down the best food I've had in a long time. Prices are extremely reasonable and the staff are absolutely lovely. My meal of smashed avocado, eggplant, mushrooms, spinach and cheese was terrific. Will definitely be back to try more from the menu!

A cosy little restaurant serving Polish French cuisine, right next to South Melbourne Market. The decoration and atmosphere gives you a homey feel. The owners are very welcoming. We ordered two kinds of pierogi, full English breakfast, scrambled eggs with sausages and French toast. All are well-presented and delicious.

We were wondering where to eat when we wandered past and saw the inviting seats out the front and realised here was a good chance to sample some Polish cuisine. The owner greeted us so warmly and was super helpful with the recommendations. The Ruskie Pierogi was scrumptious, featuring home made cheese, served with coleslaw and onion cream sauce. We were excited to find Hungarian Goulash and Pork Spare Ribs on the menu. The flavours were awesome in both, the result of many hours of slow cooking. The meat was overcooked for our liking though in both, so a little tough and too chewy. A cozy and homely environment, as if we were in someone's house. Amazing hospitality from an owner who knows how to make his diners feel welcome. There's a decent selection of Polish beers and vodkas too to complete the experience.

A cute, very unassuming place. Great service and a delicious menu. We had the baked eggs and breakfast melt. The breakfast melt is definitely something I’d come back for. Good atmosphere opposite the market too. I would go back for sure.

What an absolute delight! Service was fantastic - attentive, friendly and charming. Lovely decor, very intimate feel but not cramped. Peter (the owner) trained at Le Cordon Bleu and explained he is trying to create universal appeal in his food. There truly is something for everyone. You feel the love and care he puts into his food, and he uses fresh produce.

You only need to look at the photos to get an idea of how delicious the food is. We ordered cream of zucchini soup, main sized potato and cheese pierogi, meat pierogi, white sausage and the lemon baked cheesecake.

Peter makes the cheese himself and the pierogi was succulent and flavourful. The meat pierogi is mouthwateringly tasty. The pierogi come with accompaniments and delicious condiments - home made slaw and caramelised onion condiment with bacon.
The sausage was so juicy and flavoursome, while the potatoes were cooked to perfection.
The lemon cheesecake was heaven. So well-balanced.

What a wonderful experience. Peter and his staff are so welcoming and generous - I would highly recommend Tipsy Village to anyone.

Exceptional service and hospitality. Authentic and delicious cuisine, and delicious Polish beers. And all at a modest price. Definitely worth a visit.

For us, the 3rd wave coffee + hipster cafe scene is getting quite tiresome and boring now. Everywhere we go, it's the same old. Brunch is now quite homogenous.

Our experience at Tipsy Village just broke the Melbourne Brunch Scene Handbook - the atmosphere was cosy (like an European village cottage), seating was very comfy, staff were super friendly and lastly the menu offering was just something unique. For me personally, I take pride in the fact that in Melbourne you can travel the world on your tummy without leaving the city and Tipsy Village just gave us that ticket. I'm certainly no Polish cuisine connoisseur but am familiar Pierogis. To take it up a notch, apparently they just introduced black pudding pierogis so we went for it as a sharing dish. I had the Crispy Black Pudding and my wife had poached eggs on sourdough. Food aside (which was amazing by the way), Peter, the boss was very open to feedback and improvement opportunities. How often do you get management interested in customer feedback? We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Tipsy Village and it was by pure blessing that we stumbled upon this little gem amidst the chaos across the road.

When you leave Tipsy Village you walk out feeling exactly that ‘tipsy’. The flavour sensation is strong and impresses you to linger for more.

The menu has a homemade feel and warmth to soothe the soul. Unlike the competitors, the café is unique, less plastic looking, and prides itself on organic establishment away from the material world society is attracted to.

Peter (café owner and accomplished chef) is a man that could teach, mentor, and provide nostalgia from a world once forgotten regarding food. It was a privilege to meet Peter and listen to his wealth of knowledge of food, he really has learnt and lives by the old quote ‘teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime’.

Some things to note: he crafts an impressive range of pickles and preserves made with salted brine, reuses whey from milk products to dumplings (homemade pierogi), eggs that are free range but also sourced from the sustainable egg farms, the mixed mushroom basked in sav blanc on the breakfast menu, the white pork sausage carefully worked with marjoram and caramelised onions, incredible smoothies from bio-dynamic sourced milk products.

He is a proud man who experiments and delivers food with care, dignity and so pleased to show case his passion with such humbleness – truly remarkable how it is recreated in the menu.

Take the time to go to Tipsy Village and take the time to speak with Peter about his culinary skills – so much detail. His skills, quality of produce and finite practices to produce food is amazing. He strives to source his ingredients of the purest and best of its kind, with continuous development in the menu.

With his Polish roots he connects the historical dishes to the people who keep the traditional recipes safe and preserves market suppliers. A cherished eatery that makes his community special - Peter is an unsung hero of this industry.

This is a simple and homey cafe. More down to earth than it's neighbours. I was drawn in by the pierogi offerings and my weren't the cheese potato dumplings filling and creamy. Thankfully they were served with a side of pickles and sauerkraut. The coffee was good.

However, this place did not receive a 5 because of the cleanliness (the tables were yet to cleaned up), efficiency of 1 waitress (new girl? But the service was polite) and what I deem to be my friend's overpriced porridge muesli which appeared very average for its price.

I would go back only for the pierogi.
Food and service is really good here. Love the selection of food for brunch as well as the polish food here. Good Coffee, juice and polish beer on offer. A unique enjoyable and fun meal.
Mark Guardiani
Unpretentious place serving super good, no fuss food. You won't see amazing presentation/works of art here. Lots of vegetarian options. Owner knows his stuff and provides great service. Good coffee too. Highly recommended.

I can't decide what was better, the lovely warm service or the delightful food and coffee. The pancakes were as fluffy as I could have hoped for with well selected fruits, the coffee was perfect in every way. I had to return the next day just for more of this place.

This quaint cafe has recently changed owners and is absolutely perfect (I believe it’s now called something Tipsy?). Located in the most divine location overlooking the Sth Melbourne markets. My partner and I ventured here on a busy Sunday morning to have a feed before market exploration.
I ordered the smashed avocado, feta and beetroot relish which was lovely and my partner had the eggs with sides of avocado, bacon and smoked salmon.
Service was lovely and friendly; despite all the pretentious middle aged women who seemed to be frequenting this cafe and appearing to complain about absolutely everything that tried to make everyone in their vicinity hear them. Pity for the middle aged women, because they were the only ones looking like fools when the food was delicious, Iced lates were incredibly chilled and refreshing and service was incredibly friendly!
My partner and I look forward to returning!
Shiv
Service is great. Very friendly and welcoming. However, food is a bit old fashioned and moderate.

We had the baked beans and smashed avo which were okay.
Pandamonium
Didn't know you get coffee this bad in Melbourne! Milk was heated to scalding temperature, once slightly cooled it was still an undrinkable curdled fiasco. The staff were friendly and well-meaning but just hopeless at taking down our coffee order. Won't be back to try the food, which is a shame because the location makes it the perfect perching spot.
Red Bean
Service was lovely, they’re child friendly and the ambience is nice. Food prolly a 3 out of 5. Just average, to be honest. Can’t comment on coffee or drinks, but doubt we’ll return for the food.
Bella Pytka
Very friendly staff ! Our order was just a simple breakfast and this cafe does all the basics perfectly. We got two juices and they were absolutely delicious !

Not good unfortunately.

The Café looks great and what a perfect people watching spot, located just over the road from the South Melbourne Markets. That however, is as good as it gets....

Ordered a latte which arrived as a chai latte...
I then ordered the corn fritters with bacon and tomatoes. Simply awful.. Presentation was poor and the fritters had a strange gritty texture with absolutely no flavour. Safe to say only the bacon was consumed.
I left Bunyip hungry and disappointed knowing I will not be returning again.

Shame

Wonderful, attentive and friendly service. Just called in quickly for a cold press juice and it was beautiful. Staff are friendly and very obliging.

My God where to start.
So I thought great try the small quirky place
Opposite sth mel market
Bad mistake...

Guys buy some decent produce across the road

I have poached eggs on sourdough side of mushies
Obv the cheapest poss caged eggs the yolk n white virtually same colour
Mushrooms about 4 tiny champinions cut up no spice or flavour of any description.

Sour dough was in the toaster for 15 seconds max
Coffee undrinkable

Staffed by bimbo Asian girls who cannot speak or understand English

The table opposite ordered soup and toast took 4 attempts to explain what a side of toast was...
He gave up

Other table asked 4 times if they had a colouring pencils for a 5 year old
Then this manager come over to ask what her problem was....????

Owner sits on his computer oblivious to the obvious

Never never again
I told the owner exactly that.

I regretfully give this cafe a pretty mediocre score. The staff are lovely and it's a great location, but the coffee is undrinkable. The food wasn't bad but nothing really to write home about. We had the burger, which wasn't bad, and the smashed avo which was nice but very small - I'm perfectly ok with small dishes as I believe we all overeat, but don't charge the same amount as the next cafes which give you double the potion size...

The cafe was busy and the service a little slow, however, the staff were very, very obliging.

The coffee was consistently fabulous, and the breakfast good, including some relatively unusual items (Portuguese toast with Portuguese pumpkin jam - delicious). The serving size wasn't generous, however, it was "just right" for us - I suspect very hungry folks could be a little disappointed.

We enjoyed being able to sit at the 'bar' outside, and watch the activity at the market. Would definitely go back.

Consistently nice coffee and food. Friendly service at this lovely little cafe. Today was smashed avocado and feta on multigrain with pomegranate molasses and Beetroot relish. A perfect breakfast for a warm day. And absolutely delicious. Since this place changed hands I’ve been in twice. Both times they were struggling to keep up. Today. I got coffee quickly enough. But after 15 minutes and no order taken I gave up. My previous review was for the old cafe.
Tom
We had a late breakfast here. All the staff were friendly and the food was great. Nice quiet little spot, would happily recommend it to others.

Disgusting!!! Food was shocking, service and management was even worse! Melbourne is definitely known for its breakfasts and it's a pity with such a prime location that Bunyip get basic "breakfast" so wrong! Sloppy, old tasting eggs and absolutely no flavour for over $20. I'm surprised they're still running. Rather go two doors down where food is better quality/value and staff are happy to be there!
Ryan
Food was terrible ($20 for bacon and eggs and still received undercooked fried egg and "offcuts" bacon). On top of this, the service was shocking, waiting 25 min for a waiter to clear the table and take a second coffee order when the restaurant had 5 tables filled.

Turns out that the quality of the cafe matches the owner/manager's attitude. After providing criticism, was told that I was stupid for eating terrible food and that I shouldn't come back! Not that returning even crossed my mind!

Tried this place for the first time. the coffee is a good standard. the atmosphere is good. sadly though the breakfast i had (corn friitters) was not very good. the fritters were bland with very little corn and the bacon tasted like it was salted in the pan. i will try something different next time but i could sense that not a lot of passion was going into the food and it showed on the plate.

Without a doubt, this is my favourite breakfast place in South Melbourne. It has been consistently good, deals out delicious healthy breakfasts and lunches (together with the not-so-healthy, but delicious breakfast burger), and has the best coffee (aside from St Ali coffee, but it’s not always possible to get in there!) Now I know a couple of other South-Melbourne-Market-goers who read this blog, and it has been a while since I’ve been in the neighbourhood (well, since last year) but I find myself going back to the same Bunyip Cafe time and time again. Cafe Panette? Bad service (actually terrible), despite being the best place to people watch (Tony Martin has been spotted here a couple of times over the years)…Q Eleven (my parents’ favourite haunt) is for me too expensive and sort of failed to impress. I love the range of choices and the amount of food we get for our hearty and delicious breakfasts. The Boy went for a good eggs dish (you can see, plenty of food there, tasty bacon on lo

The food is of a reasonably good standard and the coffee is pleasant. The staff were friendly and the food arrived promptly.

My tea arrived in a cute little pot with cosy and it was definitely a fine cup of tea. Points for the liquid beverages and the prompt service.
James Campbell
The service was inattentive. We waited 20mins for the waitor to come and place our order. The staff were also unwelcoming. On top of all this my $16 eggs benedict was very disappointing looking like an overpriced bacon and egg muffin from McDonald's and my coffee was cold.

WORST SERVICE + BAD FOOD

Bad food, went here a year ago and the service was good went back today and it was terrible, food was dry and one meal had to be sent back.

If I was you I would avoid this place.

Absolutely terrible service the last two times I've eaten at this business. My orders have been f

"Nice coffee". Exactly. Everything was... Nice. Nothing mind blowing, but so warm and cozy and... Nice. A little home away from home.

They really should include a neutral option on the mobile app. Food was ok, nothing memorable, service was ok, wouldn't call it friendly by any stretch. Highlight is the location and the venue itself, very cool.

One of my fav breakfast spots. I love how warm and comfortable this place is, the staff are great and the food is exceptional. If you are into black pudding ask for a boss brekkie. Also loving the smashed avocado. Coffee is fantastic.

Despite a full house, service was friendly and efficient. We had the Persian omelette and the Spanish eggs. GF calls the Spanish eggs the best brekkie she ever had. I loved the Persian omelette. Good coffee, too. We'll be back!

The staff was friendly. Service was a bit slow. Food was okey not great. I had the scrambled eggs and husband had the poached eggs veggie brekkie. My dish was ok but my eggs needed seasoning. Husband didn't really like the baked beans in his dish. I tasted it and we both agreed that it lacked seasoning. Overall it was okey but I don't think we will return. Just a nice memory.

I had the scrambled eggs, with parsley garnish, best I've ever eaten, the new chef,Manjula I think, not only beautiful but an awesome gastronome, the coffee and service were very good, thanks.

A good, honest stayer. There's no shortage of great spots around here and it's been over a year since my last visit. Very happy to come here again.

When i read the other reviews I thought i might have eaten somewhere completely different.

On this day we had great service, friendly, quick. They're all quite young so staff probably change alot (uni students, backpackers etc) so I could see the service probably goes up and down.

But I've always like the place and the food. I've never had bad eggs here. Never an overcooked yolk to be seen. Today I had a seasonal brekky of asparagus with poached eggs. Perfectly cooked! There's nothing more disappointing than over done poached eggs, which I've had in more upmarket competitors..

The food is honest, no fancy presentation, but definitely fresh and well cooked.

It's also one of the few cafes in the area that has a little room, you're not cramped in. I hate prams in cafes, but here there's plenty of space.

Go and enjoy and hopefully you're there on a day with the good staff.

Service was really poor, sat in a booth trying to flag anyone down for 45 minutes and the place was half empty and the main area was right in front of us! Thought all 4 of us were invisible.

Food was expensive for small servings.

Not sure where the 84% rating came from, must have a few friends

The man and I had a great midday breakfast experience here. The service was so-so, but the quality of food more than made up for that aspect. The man opted for the big breakfast of sausages, bacon, eggs, tomatoes, hash brown and shrooms ($18), while I had the pumpkin jam and honeyed ricotta on French toast ($12). Both of our meals were delicious and satiating. The coffee was pretty good, not outstanding, but decent enough ($4 per mug). We happily handed over our hard-earned dollars for our meals, and I will be dreaming of that pumpkin jam until I return.
Michelle
Slow service with young, confused staff. I ordered Mexican eggs and the fried eggs were covered in a thick transparent goop, hardly any coriander and to be honest quite disappointing. Really wanted to like this place but the food was below par and it def needs more competent waitresses
Anne
Slow and bland. Food was so slow to come out (though coffees were fast...either you feel up on coffee or they make extra $$$ as you end up ordering a second drink once your meal finally arrives!). Would have overlooked this if the corn fritters I ordered had any flavour and were bigger than the 3 small things presented on my plate. Big let down. Would not return.
Rob Downer
Foodie. Good coffee and some good food
Kelly
Okay coffee food was very bland great service and fast food arrival time but unfortunately doesn't make up for the tasteless food
Fish
Great location with plenty of seating inside and good spots in the sun out front. Cappuccino was pretty good. Location is the key here!
Jessica Larritt
Best eggs Benedict I've ever had. Generous servings and beautiful food. Coffee us also really good.
Pousie
Alright nothing flash. Ordered the corn fritters and my partner ordered the fry up. Fritters were very thin and plain. My partner loved his fry up, especially the snags and mushrooms.

Not bad but nothing to rave about

Simply Amazing. This place has beyond outstanding breakfasts. The ingredients are sourced fresh from the market literally across the street and the taste reflects the outstanding skill of the chef. The prices are extremely reasonable and the atmosphere is laid back. There is also a wonderful patio where you can watch the passers by and the bustle of the market. I highly recommend Bunyip for breakfast! (Plus, the kitchen is open until 3 PM, how awesome is that!?)
Sale Giss
Funky little cafe across from the markets that doesn't require reservations on a Saturday morning. Love it
Sandy Soerjadhi
Nice looking, okay everything else. Looks cute from outside, staff; some friendly, some not so, food was okay when it finally came (we waited over half an hour for breakkie), meals were missing a few sides, but the waitress was happy to go look for the lost ones quickly. Not bad, might give it one more go sometime in the future.

Just had brunch here. I ordered french toastoast.. Well, not as good as I was expected. Coffee was nice. Few regular customers were there.. The ambiance quite homey..

A place to relax. The coffee was okay by Melbourne standards. I was quite pleased with the eggs Benedict that I ordered, while my wife was underwhelmed by her Spanish omlette. Our friend ordered a do-it-yourself melt (an open sandwich) and enjoyed it. The location next to south Melbourne market makes it convenient and popular. Nice ambiance, clean toilets. the service was helpful and unrushed. Overall we enjoyed our meal- the food itself was neither spectacular, nor was it bad, and as a package along with the location and decor made it a comfortable place to relax
Rob
A lovely, warm, inviting space. Friendly service. Coffee was ok. Food was ok. It was nice but nothing to make me want to come back.

Do a mean breakfast burger, which has to be one of the best in Melbourne, called the "Phat Burger". The best coffee on the Coventry Street strip.
