Review A Treat Of France - Melbourne

Angel Khong
A Treat of France was a cafe/bakery located in Southbank. It seemed that most of their offerings were just the ones they had on the display, although they did have some menu items also. Most things were made for takeaway only which was a bit weird as they had quite a few tables available in the cafe. Had coffee and waffles, the coffee was’t great as it was burnt and bitter, but the waffles were pretty tasty; the sour fruit compote was well balanced with the ice cream. Service was ok. Would try some of their cakes next.

Chanced on this place and really loved the baguettes and Danish! Really delicious, baguette was fresh and crispy. They toasted it for me and took out! Has the prosciutto baguette and blueberry Danish!

Best almond croissant I’ve ever had!! I’ll be back for their amazing selection of baguettes, everything made fresh and in-house. Lovely service and great prices. * Edit * I come here weekly now and everything is seriously AMAZING. My personal favourites are the turkey n brie baguette, chunky steak pie (OMG 😍) and the waffles!!!

I am so excited today to visit this Cafe just at the corner of my apartment. Great experience with welcoming staff and delicious food, absolutely love it! Will be back ~

Delicious coffee, loved it. Pastries are too good to try with coffee. Very friendly staff members.

Breads here are cheap and good taste. Coffee is so so. I visited so many times!

If I was grabbing a coffee around here, I would definitely pick here over all other surrounding cafes... staff seem friendly and the sandwiches/toasties look awesome (checkout my pix)! Make sure you check them out

I live front of the building that i go this cafe.
Here coffee taste getting worse than 2years since i moved.
I think baristas are not professional...coffee taste always different. Taste of watery...bubbles...burn.
I normally visit afternoon... taste disappointed...Woolworths coffee better than here.....
I would stop to visit from today....

Baguette was ok and the coffee wasn't bad.Β
There's a few tables inside and outside if you wanted to dine in.Β
Lunch specials are quite reasonably priced.

We buy pastries and cakes from this little bakery from time to time. This time it was an almond croissant. Don't mind the photos - I think it got a little flattened on the way home. The croissant was delicious - sweet but in my opinion, not too sweet, a good dusting of icing powder and almonds along with a chocolate centre that gets molten when reheated. Honestly quite indistinguishable from the other fancy artisan places that charge $8 for a similar croissant.

In terms of ambience, personally I think the layout could be improved. The tables there are all pushed against the walls with a large open space in the middle, which does not give it a very cosy feeling. Breaking up the space would help.

Worth a try for some good pastries and baked goods.

Busy Sunday morning, staff were friendly and service was attentive. Baguettes looked great but settled on a toasted sandwich which was basic but delicious. Coffee was good. Would I go back - yes.
Ps the place is open flags on app as being temporarily closed - not the case.

Nice atmosphere. Food was good. Service was good. 2min from our appartment so very convenient. Very enjoyable breakfast, the waffles were so good

Nice little cafe which makes freshly baked baguettes πŸ₯– on premises. My favourite is the pastrami baguette which after toasted tastes quite nice. Generally the place serves the apartments around it
Good Food Good Mood
Popped in for a sweet treat and I am pleased to confirm despite some less than favourable reviews on here it really did satiate the tastebuds. The macarons were divine and the chocolate dessert rich and indulgent. The larger cakes also looked quite stunning and would be perfect for a birthday or sharing occasion. A little bit of Parisian deliciousness in Southbank

Great cake, medium sandwiches, poor coffee. The staff who makes coffee keep changing all the time, I would rate the coffee served over there is below melbourne average but above McDonald, unfortunately. Environment is ok for a short talk, but not that kind of place you want to spend for morning.

We bought takeaway coffees here this morning, and unfortunately it was just awful. The coffee didn't taste fresh and the milk tasted burnt and with a strange sour aftertaste. There are some much nicer tasting places to get coffee within a few blocks.

Ordered a strong warm latte: warm means "able to drink immediately" I finished my focaccia which was pretty average and then the coffee was ready to drink which was a watery flavourless cup of dirt with a burnt milk taste

I normally don't write reviews on cafes, as i don't like to damage ones reputation but this calls for a review......Β

1. Can the older lady behind the counter please show some attention to the customers who aren't tradies?? As per other comments below, the lady will completely ignore you unless you either are a tradie or some young guy who is 30 years younger then her....Β

2. Please don't sneeze on your hands and then wrap my food up! This is disgusting and may explain why the comment below said your being reviewed by OHS.

As (jay) said in the below comments " Avoid like the plague "

Avoid at all cost! I worked for this place for about a month. Business is completely off the books and doesn't pay there staff. Family run business which only uses people for a short amount of time and then lets them go without paying them. Please do not support such a business, when there are so many great cafes in the area doing the right thing. (paying tax) So many cafes are struggling to stay afloat in Melbourne by doing the right thing. Do not support the cheats! This place has also been recently reported by local people for health and safety. (not myself) the place is completely dirty! Drains are blocked and re-used food. Please support the cafes in melbourne doing the right thing by the community.

After a fairly long walk from the Southgate complex I came to A Treat of France for my dessert and thoroughly enjoyed their Blueberry Baked Cheese Cake at the bargain price of $6.50. Yes, another truly beautiful dessert to satisfy my sweet palate. Service provision was excellent with staff being very friendly and attentive. I couldn't get over how busy this little shop was with a constant stream of customers visiting throughout my 30 minute stay (always a good sign of great food) especially considering it's somewhat "out of way" location.Β I'll be back sometime in the coming Summer to try something different.

Phill Jury (food critic & writer)

Pleace is quite busy, in particular with lots of tradies in the area, but it looks like everyone has found out about this place. Since it has the best croissants. Coffee, atmosphere and serving staff are very nice.

Amazing food and pastry, very good coffee, great position, the staff is nice, and the restaurant manager is very kind.Β
The place is beautiful, very cozy and comfortable.

The service here is, sadly, awful. I tried so hard to buy baguettes, which you would think they serve, being, purportedly, a French cafe. I was told the first time they had already sold out and to come in earlier in the morning. Next time, I came in earlier and I was told the second time that none were made that day. I asked which days they were made so I could come in early on a day they were being made - I was told it was random and I would have to try my luck. I was told the third time they never make baguettes but they do make bread rolls. I settled for the rolls and never went back again. Suffice to say, they don't attempt to make customers happy, or to give consistent messages to their staff about what goes on at the cafe.

I never write reviews but I must in this case, the older lady behind the counter prefers to flirt with men younger than her than give any wanted attention to customers that are there to order, the coffee the worst I've ever had, and the ham sandwich made me so sick it must have been the runny Mayo I don't know what it was I felt just awful, the ambience nothing French about except the dry croissants, staff are rude talk amongst themselves instead of caring for there customers!!πŸ‘ŽπŸ»πŸ‘ŽπŸ»πŸ‘ŽπŸ»πŸ‘ŽπŸ»πŸ‘ŽπŸ»πŸ‘ŽπŸ»πŸ‘ŽπŸ»πŸ‘ŽπŸ»πŸ‘ŽπŸ»πŸ‘ŽπŸ»a huge thumbs down!!!!!!! Great croissants, awful service.
Came in for a coffee and croissant today as haven't been here for a ew months. Spilt water all over the floor which nobody bothered to clean up for 5 minutes.
Was served by one of the rudest wait staff I have experienced in quite some time (after waiting at the counter whilst they talked to themselves).
Unless the service improves I won't be back as o still rate the croissants as some of the best in Melbourne.

Not the place to go if you want a big coffee. Never eaten here so can't comment on the food, but I would buy drinks twice per day if, when you ordered a large, it came in anything bigger than an 8oz cup. At least tell people they're not getting anything like a large.

Everytime I come to Melbourne, I come to this cafe religiously. There is simply no better place for baguettes, croissants and pastries. The croissants instantly take me back to a cold morning in Paris where I tasted the best croissant at a local bakery. You can tell love has been put into everything that comes out of the kitchen here. I have noticed this place get busier everytime I come back and they deserve every success! I just wished there was a cafe like this one in Sydney!

Good coffee, fresh pastries and beautiful looking old building. I've been here only once because there are some many other options in south melbourne. I'll probably give it another go soon.

Got a free tart ! :). So I stumbled upon this place today walking by the shop and went inside to have a look.. There was one staff member in the store who seemed a little bit incompetent to be perfectly honest but nice and friendly none the less. I asked for a loaf of sour dough bread and a piece of cheese cake unfortunately both were sold out by 4.30 in the afternoon which was a shame. I then decided on a passionfruit tart which the worker offered me free of charge as I had waited for a while and both of the things I wanted were unavailable and this was a pleasant surprise to me. As I sat down to eat a group of 10 to 15 people came in the door for coffees and cakes and the staff member told them Oh sorry we are closing soon and I just turned off the coffee machine.. I thought this was pretty poor of him! dissapointing to the business itself and to the people who had made the effort to come to this cafe. I thought it was pretty lazy that he would choose to dismiss 10 to 15 customers just because he couldn't really be bothered turning on the machine and serving them! but anyways the tart I had was lovely and the food looked fantastic I just thought how he dealt with that situation wasn't quite right...

Baguette. The freshest crispiest and tastiest roll I have in a long time. Not a sweet eater but the cakes are devine. Custard donut yummy.

Closest one could feel to Paris in Melbourne. Pastries are crisp and buttery. Coffee is pretty strong, but in a good way, not over powering.
Best in area.
Staff are mainly French, polite, and very easy on the eye :)

Bad service. Food is bain marie, nothing is fresh. Coffee average.

Amongst the building work and traffic through City Road is a little piece of France, A Taste of France is located in a beautiful building and rocking out traditional French baking and lunch including favourites like baguettes – take home or enjoy filled with cheese or ham for lunch. Croissants freshly baked and still crisp waiting for butter and jam or delicate cakes nestled together waiting for that lucky person to take them home. It’s a little shop to enjoy at the front of what looks like a pretty substantial baking operation, I imagine we get a Taste of France in more places than we know! Many people are dropping in to take home a fresh coffee and baked goods but as we went for a wander around South Melbourne we were happy to pull up a chair and enjoy the sun and a very lovely coffee. To go with that coffee? It had to be an almond croissant, the plain croissants delectable sister, covered in icing sugar and almonds and inside…. Hmmmm that butter almond custardy filling. I know how m

They serve the best almond croissants around. Crisp and buttery, these have come straight down from heaven.
