Review Fatto Bar And Cantina - Melbourne

ft reader
Happened to be walking by on way out to dinner and saw they had a special on espresso martini’s. Went in for a quick drink and was impressed by the variety of bar snacks and ambience. Will have to go there again for a longer session next time (hopefully the espresso martini’s will in special again)

The food is great but I gave this a 3 because the people were not as attentive with service once they found out we were here for small plate and alcohol. We had to get our own plates, cutlery, and water. I could understand if the drinks were like a few bucks but with martini price at 21..I expect some service. We had chips (fries) and bruchetta which was good.

I always feel a bit disappointed here. Both the bar and the Catina restaurant seem to disappoint. Beautiful venue and convenient to theatre venues, but staff are too busy to be attentive and food is expensive for what it is.

3.5 Star ⭐️ but closer to four than a three star experience. After a really bad experience of Fatto due to Ubereats fault, I decided to visit Fatto in person to try their food. Sadly the Cantina is closed but the bar is still open serving pizzas and snacks. We shared the some salumi Tartufo and a mushroom pizza. I asked the staff whether tartufo is truffle and they told me no, its is like cured meat like prosciutto. 🙈. I hope it’s just late and they are tired because I am pretty sure tartufo is truffle!!! Thankfully the food really makes up for the service and the salumi was mouthwateringly delicious and mushroom pizza was super tasty 😋

I went here with friends after the NGV on a Sunday afternoon. I had the agnolotti, it was very delicious. You're paying Southbank prices so you get a riverside location. Great location and friendly service. I'm actually more curious about their weekday lunch specials which are not southbank prices. I'll be back to try them.

Delicious lazy Saturday lunch on the terrace. Shared beetroot risotto, baramundi, crab pasta and pumpkin ravioli as well as garlic pizza and ricotta nectarine to start. Would recommend all of them. Drink service was slow and could be improved.

My usual selection for pre theatre meals aground the art centre prevent precent. Simple Italian meals at ok prices. Had burger during summer day with a Peroni red, hard to fault it

I've visited Fatto a few times and it always satisfies. The space is bright and contemporary with traditional Italian touches, and the food and drinks follow along the same lines. I love the little cocktail window, which is currently taken over by Tanqueray gin for the summer. The drinks are strong and refreshing, but the vegetarian dishes are also a reason to visit.

My husband and I came here before seeing a show at the arts centre and were disappointed that the a la carte menu wasn’t available as there was only a 3 course pre-show set menu that was fully booked.

we were offered a table at the bar and the bar menu was was nice but the portions were small. The pizzas were simple with scarce toppings but very cheesy. Bar service was prompt and the staff were friendly though.

This summers pop up bar at Fattos just launched tonight. Partnering with Tanqueray this pop up offered us gin based cocktails on tap and some delicious G@T’s and G&S’s. Canapés were curious and gelato a wonderful treat too. Great beats and sunshine ... perfect summer venue.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Previous Reviews
Came back to Fatto for a pre fixe menu ahead of a live podcast show at the art centre. We liked the choices of this 2 course menu but funnily enough all ended up ordering the same main... the spanner crab spaghettini. Fresh and flavoursome we all enjoyed. For dessert I ordered the tiramisu bc and were surprised by the share size of this dessert when it came out... a real monster. Good fast service and a quick meal... exactly what we wanted ahead of the show.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Came to the launch event for the Fatto Pimms Pop up bar tonight. There was a Pimms cart making the perfect blends. The style is unmistakably summertime and you can relax on lingers with your Pimms cup or share a jug with friends. Fatto Bar has always done a great job with their affordable eats.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Called into Fatto Bar & Cantina ahead of a gig at the Forum (Angus & Julia Stone ... they were great ... especially Julia... thanks for asking). It was fairly quiet being a wet cold Sunday night but we were welcomed to our table. I had had the thought of just grabbing pizza or something at the bar side of this venue as advertising outside indicated $10 pizza and I was happy with the sound of that. Others in the group decided they wanted table service so we were presented with the full menu option instead.
It was quite a tasty looking menu with plenty of variety and vego options to suit some in the group. We had bread and oils plus olives and almonds to snack on while out the pastas we ordered were cooked. The spiced almonds were so tasty I pretty much devoured them alone.
We ordered double ups of the sage and burnt butter agnolotti pasta and the pork ragu with garganelli pasta. Both pastas were delicious. Sage and burnt butter was sensational especially with the addition of roasted pine nuts to the mix. Such a classic but delicious vegetarian option.
My pork ragu was tender and flavoursome and the pasta cooked a firm al dente. One in the group would have preferred their pasta cooked a little longer but that comes down to taste and I’m not even sure if the average restaurant would cater to such a request anyway.
For dessert others chose a second glass of wine. The drinks menu here was actually quite good and the Paolovino Pinot Grigio was very reasonably priced by the glass and very drinkable.
For dessert I went against my standard creme brûlée choice and instead opted for the spiced quince and marsala tart. Something about quince, probably my childhood memories of my parents stewing a tree load of quince and apple from our farm but I couldn’t pass it up and it was yum.
Service was friendly and we enjoyed our time despite the lack of atmosphere on account of being a rainy Sunday evening.
Set against the beautiful Yarra river, this is a great spot. And not one you can miss when you’re walking along the river. If there is one thing I can highly recommend here, it has to be the coffee. It has to be the best damn coffee on the river. The one thing I would avoid is the Espresso Martini. I have come to learn, if they offer it on tap, pass on it. This goes for many other places too.
I love Fatto's position, overlooking the Yarra and the city skyline along Southbank. Set up like a traditional Italian pizzeria, it has a lovely European feel with lots of space indoors, as well as some lovely outdoor areas to soak up the sun. Decorated with Italian paraphernalia and greenery, it's light and airy and has a relaxed feel.
This is the perfect place to order a wine or two over a delicious pizza, and people watch during the day. At night it's a great place to gather with friends and family for delicious Italian fare served with loads of hospitality. The staff are lovely, chatty and welcoming; and visiting Fatto is like visiting family.
We went to Fatto to enjoy their $30 bottomless pasta deal last week. For $30, you get to try 4 different pastas which was a decent deal. For convienence and their hibiscus negroni, I give it a 3. Personally I'd prefer to pay $30 on one really really good dish of pasta rather than 4 average plates.
We arrived for our 6pm booking and had to wait some time before we were seated. Service was slow throughout the meal culminating in us having to leave before our desserts arrived as it was 7.20pm and we were seeing a show at 7.30pm. Given we had made it clear when we arrived that we were seeing a 7.30pm show and that we we chose the pre theatre menu this was really disappointing. In addition the barramundi was not properly cooked and the steak arrived without so much as a garnish.
To top it off we were charged full price for the mains we'd chosen and $8 for an affogato that never arrived.
The New Fave
Italian inspired restaurant Fatto is serving up bottomless Orieccette with broccoli, anchovy, chili and garlic, Tagliatelle with red wine braised beef chin, Rigatoni Amatricana and Spaghetti aglio. The actual pasta in all four of the dishes was the standout - clearly homemade and cooked al dente. The flavours in the Oriecette, Tagliatte and Spaghetti were also pretty tasty - although all were improved with an extra dash of chili and seasoning.
Alicia
Came here tonight for the $30 bottomless pasta deal. The service was slow, the portion size was small and the pasta sauce was very watery, especially the rigatoni. The tagliatelle was the best in my opinion. One of the waitresses spent 40 minutes folding napkins instead of serving customers. Overall 2/5, would not recommend and I probably wouldn’t return here.
Went to Fatto tonight at 8.30 after a play. At 9pm was told the bar was closing shortly. At 9.30 the bar was declared closed despite people still being in the bar and the restaurant. We enquired whether we could get another drink and were told no. However the place remained open until we left at 10.30 having drunk water for an hour. Staff were disinterested and lazy (we had to ask for our table to be cleaned when we sat down which was done grudgingly) and not customer oriented. We felt like an imposition on their night. Will never go back, ever. Plenty of other places in Melb who genuinely want business and treat customers well.
Tried the $30 bottomless pasta deal. Did not enjoy. Service was really slow (perhaps on purpose). Food ranged from mediocre to bad. Just goes to show you can't trust all you can eat
My partner and I came here on a Friday night to take advantage of the pre-theatre set menu, we didn’t have a booking however the hostess Chelsea was more than accommodating. We were able to grab a drink and wait for a table, before we knew it a table was ready.
We both enjoyed the sirloin and had a side of broccoli and chips.
For dessert we have the tiramisu and gelati ( masala and chic mint flavours).
We both enjoyed our food.
Fatto is a great way to enjoy the city atmosphere.
Thanks Fatto for a beautiful night out. Amazing atmosphere and even better food. Thanks for serving up some unique Italian dishes. I’ll definitely have to come back here soon😁
Between two performances at the Arts Centre and Hamer Hall, we opted to dine in Fatto. Ordered the Mushroom pizza and beer. For desserts, ordered the raspberry, pistachio and chocolate tart. Pizza was decent but the tart was too good and flavorful.
Good Food Good Mood
We were invited to the Pimms pop up at Fatto which is held on their river terrace Wednesday’s-Sunday’s for the duration of summer. Pimms for me personifies summer so I absolutely adore this ingenious way to enjoy the warmer weather and relax with friends over a refreshing cup or two with some yummy canapés, definitely recommend checking it out
Original review
We were invited to dine at Fatto last night to sample their feasting menu. At $55pp for three courses it was a substantial amount of food and it was all beautifully presented. We started off with a round of aperol spritz before continuing on to white and then red wine. The red, a Pizzini Sangiovese was the standout, thoroughly recommend. They are fortunate to be owned by the same group as Stokehouse so benefit from their sommeliers and boast an impressive wine list.
The first course comprises of kingfish tartare and wagyu carpaccio. The other dish is an antipasto but this was swapped for a burrata with zucchini noodles for us because of dietary requirements (note the menu listed on Zomato has been amended slightly). My favourite was the kingfish. It had both stunning textures and delicious flavours. The carpaccio we were told is made from Victorian wagyu beef and looked like a work of art on the plate.
Next up were the small dishes and the crab spaghettini, Fatto’s signature dish shone in all its stunning simplicity. I really enjoyed the subtle lemon flavour. The chilli was not particularly pronounced which suits me as I’m not a chilli fan! In a word, delicate. The fresh little salad that accompanied this was the perfect pairing.
Our final course was the sirloin which came with some chips that almost stole the show. The paprika style seasoning coating this was exceptionally delicious. With such stellar views of our wonderful city and fabulous food it’s impossible not to like Fatto
We were walking near the NGV and Southbank area with the free city tour and saw they had some happy hour specials so we went to get a couple of pizzas and drinks.
Very small pizzas ( but what else can I expect in $10), and the taste was good. Works well for an evening snack.
We enjoyed a very relaxing afternoon at Fatto in the bar area. Great selection of drinks and bar food including wood-fired pizza and the best chips I’ve ever tasted! Service is efficient and friendly. Highly recommended!
We visited Fatto bar and Cantina the other night which is just looking over the Yarra River. The interior is very moody and has great vibes.
We enjoyed the signature 'Feasting' package which consisted of many delicious course
The first was a board of salumi and cheese, the prosciutto and stracciatella was of high quality and we especially enjoyed the pickles in the middle
The citrus cured salmon with basil cream was a really light dish that had nice fresh flavours, we enjoyed this dish a lot
The wagyu carpaccio was probably our favourite dish of the night. This dish was mouth watering, the beef was sliced very thin and topped with truffle pesto , balsamic and broad beans . The balsamic really brought this dish to life – so delicious
The spanner crab spaghettini was presented next with a fennel salad, really liked the bitterness of the grapefruit in the salad. The pasta had a generous amount of crab but we found it too acidic, adding a few grains of salt really lifted this dish
Lastly we shared the 300g sirloin which to my liking still had the fat caps attached, the meat was cooked to a medium rare and was very juicy – we enjoyed this with chips and aioli, a very satisfying main
Overall the feasting menu is very generous and good value for money , the staff here are friendly and the view of the river is beautiful
Thanks for having us !
Split The Bill
We were invited to Fatto to check out their "Feasting" menu.
In a great location overlooking Southbank, it was pretty busy for a weeknight. Getting a booking is essential as it was quite busy.
We started with the Aperol spritz followed by the prosciutto with mozarella which was generous and quite milky as well as the Burrata, Lemon Oil, Zucchini Noodles, Pine Nuts, Vincotto and the kingfish tartare which was very refreshing. We highly recommend the kingfish tartare :-).
This was followed by the rocket salad and Spaghettini with Spanner Crab, Lemon, Chilli and Parsley which we felt lacked flavour and the pasta was overcooked.
The last course was the salad and sirloin steak which was a little on the chewy side and not too tender however the hot chips were certainly a treat.
We decided on Fatto before attending a performance in Hamer Hall. It’s located adjacent to the foyer so very convenient.
The name and decor promises Italian food.... hmmmm
Lost in translation I think.
Very little offered gluten free
Olives - warm and tasty
Seasoned nuts - very good
Chips- shoestring uninspiring/ aioli all ruined by a carpet of paprika (not used in any Italian recipe I know of) yuk we sent them away no offer of a replacement or refund.
Music was some dreadfully loud doof doof which was totally wrong for the crowd and again did nothing to add any Italian ambiance.
So only the name is Italian- nothing else. Oh and the Aperol Spritz 🍹
Gastrology
To start, an excellent selection of antipasti – prosciutto di parma and stracciatella alongside two small plates of wagyu carpaccio and kingfish tartare. The carpaccio was of particular note. We loved how the beef has been sliced delicately thin and adorned generously with aromatic truffle pesto, parmesan and aged balsamic. Simply stunning.
Melbourne To Mouth
Love Fatto! Not only is this the perfect spot to sit and enjoy on of the best views of Melbourne and to watch the world wander by, but the food is amazing.
We came in on a Sunday night for dinner and decided to indulge in their feasting menu. Starting off with some antipasti and an aperol spritz, you really can’t go wrong. Perfect cuts of meat with delicious bread sticks, cheese and pickles is only the start! Their spanner crab pasta was my highlight, but it was also hard to fault the perfectly cooked sirloin that followed it out. By the end of this meal we were full to the brim, it’s definitely worth every penny!
With amazingly friendly staff and a great wine selection, definitely make sure you put this on your list for your next evening out!
I was lucky enough to be invite to sample Fatto’s signature “Feasting” menu, which was absolute delight! For $55pp, both the quantity and quality of the food is well beyond exceptional! Not only this, but we also enjoyed the lively atmosphere at Fatto as well as the magnificent view by the river at night.
We started off with a selection of antipasti - the Prosciutto, Wagyu Carpaccio, and Kingfish Tartare. The Prosciutto, served along with a delightful whipped buffalo mozzarella, was absolute perfection and exceeded our expectations in every way. I’be never really been one to order salumi/cheese, however I think this dish may just have changed this! The combination paired extremely well together and the cheese was light, creamy and heavenly. The Wagyu Carpaccio was both a work of art and a flavour bomb - the truffle pesto added the perfect umami-ness and the generous sprinkling of shaved Parmesan elevated it to the next level. However, is have to say that the Kingfish Tartare was my absolute favourite - the pairing of creamy verde mayo with the crispy sago cracker provided wondrous textures and flavours in our mouths.
We then moved onto the Spaghettini with Spanner Crab, Lemon and Chilli, and a side salad of Rocket and Grapefruit. The spaghettini was extremely enjoyable - we loved the subtle lemon flavours and the texture of the breadcrumbs on top, and the pasta was cooked al dente. The side salad was nice and refreshing, the grapefruit added a good balance of sweetness and acidity.
We finished off with our main course which was a Sirloin steak cooked medium rare, along with a bowl of chips. The steak was tender and juicy, although there were small parts which were slightly chewy. However, the main highlight would have to be the chips - quite possibly some of the crispiest, fluffiest, most perfect chips you’ll try! The house seasoning (which has flavours of paprika) and the aioli is absolutely amazing - we completely devoured the bowl and could’ve easily had another (despite feeling very full!).
Along with our meal, we were treated to a round of Aperol Spritz and a glass of white wine, which completed the whole experience. Dinner at Fatto definitely exceeded our expectations in every way, and I would highly recommend giving this place a go!
Flying Forward
I was invited to “indulge” in Fatto’s signature $55 Feasting Menu, and it is well worth the money.
Warmly greeted by the manager, we were seated by the window overlooking Flinders Street Station.
It was a wet Sunday night, drops of rain staining the windows, and the orange hue from the station providing a warm, comfortable atmosphere.
A range of Antipasti arrived as first course:
* Classic air dried prosciutto served with a chopped buffalo mozzarella, which was light, creamy and milky.
* Kingfish cubes with fine zucchini noodles was refreshing, tangy and slightly creamy from the pine nuts. Beautiful on the tapioca crisp that looks like fish skin!
* Wagyu carpaccio – mind blown! The flavour hit is intense with the truffle pesto. The salty bits of cheese crystals from the parmesan hit you from another angle, and then the aged balsamic comes at the end and freshens you up again. One of the best dishes I’ve had in a while, it was stunning. Although, recommended to chase each bite with a bit of crostini to balance it all out again.
Second course:
* Spagettini with spanner crab – love the finer texture of the spaghettini. The simple flavours of lemon oil and crab make the dish so enjoyable to eat.
* Roquette, fennel, blood orange, pecorino – somewhat of a classic salad from the late 90s, the bitterness balances out the pasta.
Third course:
* 300G sirloin was beautifully grilled medium rare, and was surprisingly light in flavour. It was a fairly lean cut and was quite juicy.
* Chips – the best chips I’ve had in AGES! They were so good – double or even triple fried, they were so crispy on the outside and really fluffy inside. The seasoning of paprika and herbs was perfect and with aioli, I couldn’t stop. I could come back and just have a bowl of chips and beer and be totally happy.
Dessert:
* Tiramisu & Tart – didn’t actually get any dessert, which is normally part of the Feasting menu, but just as well because I was absolutely rolling.
* Aperol Spritz - good ratio between Aperol, prosecco and soda. Thumbs up for the paper straws.
Really great food in a central location, you can't go wrong here.
Hello. Imnikki
4.5
What an amazing feast! The aptly named "Feasting Menu" left me and my partner bursting at the seams, and also very impressed with the entire dining experience.
Starting off with kingfish tartare, wagyu carpaccio and prosciutto, we knew we were in for a delicious meal. The verde mayo and truffle pesto from the kingfish tartare and wagyu carpaccio respectively worked wonders to enhance the flavour of the dish, yet allowing the natural flavours of the kingfish and wagyu to shine.
This was followed by the crab spaghettini and roquette salad, and the sirloin steak and a bowl of chips. The spaghettini was wonderfully al dente, and the simple flavours of the sauce allowed us to savour the freshness and sweetness of the crab. Likewise, the sirloin steak was juicy and flavourful, and while most of it was tender, a small section was rather chewy. The salad was a great palate cleanser, but we personally aren't buddies with salads so we left that unfinished. On the other hand, the hot chips with house seasoning was addictively delicious.
The wine recommendation made for us was spot on. Fitted the meal perfectly, very easy to drink and just lovely.
As we were invited, the rating is not greatly affected by the service but there was no denying that the hospitality provided to us and other diners were excellent. Charming, approachable and attentive.
Thank you to Fatto for the invite.
We were craving Italian. We thought we'd walk into Fatto before our visit to the NGV. We loved the service. The ambience was cool. The letdown was the portion of food for the price.
Fatto bar and cantina. Technically I should give 4.5 but as I rate on cell phone. I think it definitely worth 5 points haha. Too be honest I didn’t expect too much for the food as Fatto is mainly a bar in my impression. However I was wrong, the Italian cuisine is definitely a good restaurant level. Great location and nice Italian dining environment. Staff were very nice and friendly with great service. I love the entrees king fish, waygu tartar and cheese ham plater. Pizzini savionvese Shiraz is a good companion to the raw beef steak. High level cook as a bar food restaurant. Definitely worth a visit and I really enjoy the dinning experience.
Two Sheds
We really liked it here. It’s a 4.2 for me. The food and service was fantastic, plus the views back to the city across the river are wonderful. There’s lots to admire from a place that we really should have been to a number of times already.
To tell you the truth, I’ve never quite gelled with Southbank. Apart from the occasional lovely meal, I’ve always thought the area promised more than it delivered. Not anymore. Fatto is the first restaurant you encounter on the right as you cross the bridge from the city. It’s a place you absolutely need to go to.
We were lucky enough to try the tasting menu today. It’s an incredibly generous range of food. The dishes were absolutely delicious. Even the bread we started with was superb, both seeded and plain. Beautifully fresh and wholesome, these were the best starter breads I have had for quite some time. The first dishes to come out were the antipasti - kingfish tartare, prosciutto and wagyu carpaccio. We thought these were just excellent. The kingfish was our favourite but we also admired the carpaccio very much not just for the lovely taste but that it looked a bit like a Jackson Pollock work (I’m a big Pollock fan).
Next we’re into the small dishes and these were beautiful too. We adored the spaghettini with spanner crab, lemon and chilli, it was just delicious. Delicate and carefully flavoured, it is a truly wonderful dish. The salad was lovely too. Rocket, Parmesan and pink grapefruit. It’s a terrific and refreshing little salad.
We had the medium dishes to finish and we loved these too. The sirloin was cooked wonderfully and was very tasty. I actually got a little anxious finishing it knowing there was no more to come. I was enjoying it that much. The chips with house seasoning and aoli were also very pleasant to finish with.
I forgot to mention our drinks. We’d started with an extremely well made Aperol spritz. I could offer no greater praise than it seemed as good as ones I’ve had overseas. It was a cracker. Our wine to accompany the meal was a Pizzini Sangiovese Shiraz. Great winery. Lovely wine.
Our two servers were lovely today. Not just for us either. Watching them serve others in the room you could tell they enjoyed their work and were very good at their craft.
To conclude, I’ll never doubt Southbank again. This is a very good restaurant. We thoroughly enjoyed the food and wine here. We were very surprised at the quality and range. It would be incredibly easy to eat here in conjunction with a trip to nearby galleries and shows and we shall definitely do so in future.
A great experience. Thank you to Fatto for the kind invitation to dine here.
Service was very efficient but food was not the best.
We ordered the crab pasta. Unfortunately it was over powered by lemon juice and the portion sizes were too small. Very disappointing as I was craving a good seafood pasta dish. We Left feeling hungry.
On a positive note. Service was great.
Food For Thought
Once you walk in, there is a lovely atmosphere with stunning views of the yarra river and service was professional and friendly. We decided to have lunch at the Cantina as the menu was more extensive. The spanner crab spaghettini and kingfish tartare were excellent. Even the chips with aioli was well flavoured with a hint of smoked paprika. Would love to try to pizzas here next time!
Perfect date night spot at Hamer hall, serving up delicious Woodfire pizza at only $10 with a glass of Shiraz or beer! The sides were amazing too chicken wings, cauliflower fritters and let’s never forget dessert chocolate pizza!
what an amazing sunny winter sunday we had. After a long stroll my wife and I decided to stop for a quick bite. They have this small pizza for $10 we had the potatoes one with hazelnut and taleggio (italian cheese) crispy base and very tasty. Just little bit over the average price in drinks.
I ordered a plate of pasta that was served to me with a puddle of water at the bottom of the bowl. The waiter told me that they couldn’t replace it because that’s just “how it’s made”, but another waiter brought me the dish prepared a little better.
My daughter ordered a different pasta dish, and it had absolutely no flavour, the garlic and oil were low quality for the price.
These things were bearable, but then when the bill arrived we were charged a public holiday surcharge of $6. A small amount, but considering that at the beginning of the meal when asked, the waiter said that each dish would be $25, when in reality they came to more.
I raised this with the manager who condescendingly pointed out the small print on the menu that mentions the surcharge, and announced that that meant that they had no obligation to refund it. My daughter pointed out that it means that they have no *legal* obligation, but as it was a mistake made by the waiter and we had no reason not to trust him, it certainly left a bad taste in our mouths.
A lovely spot on Melbourne's south bank just opposite Flinders street station. whether you're going to the theatre, or just a day out in Melbourne, its happy hours are always worth the visit.
with a choice of inside, semi outside, or outside under an umbrella, you are sure for good service and good food and drink.
Famished
Southbank has many a tourist trap, but Fatto isn't one of them.
I experienced attentive service and was happy with my meal selections; the whipped ricotta dish for entree, and risotto for main. They were only offering the pre-theatre and bar menus on a public holiday, so I'll have to return to get my hands on the tortellini next time.
Where Will We Eat
A group of friends and I came to Fatto one Friday night for a pre-theatre dinner. Service was quick and friendly. Fatto has a special pre-theatre menu, with two courses for $45 and three courses for $55. Due to the time factor (on our behalf) we went for the two course option. Everyone's dishes were great. Well portioned and very tasty. I had the swordfish main and the chocolate & hazelnut tart for dessert.
Definitely would come back!
Price Taylor
Worst customer service from Management ever. Even asked them to have GM or owner contact me. Zero response. After spending $1780 on a Friday night with a group of 20 they will never get my business again. Will also make sure all my friends in Melbourne avoid going there!
Super cute venue, ambience is very italiano! We were greeted by friend staff on a arrival. We were a big group so opted for the 3course menu at $65 was such good value.
My favourite dishes were the poached nectarine with marscapone cheese omg!!! The crab and chilli spaghettini is delish!
What a joke. This place has ZERO service. For the extreme lack of service, it is grossly over priced. The staff seem to hate their job, I didn’t get one smile and we were ignored at every opportunity. It’s like we were an inconvenience to be there. I was so disappointed, this place could be SO much better but they have opted for a quick buck at the expense of their reputation and you have to do everything yourself, (including getting your own plates, serviettes etc) but you’re paying full service prices. I will go out of my way to avoid this place, never again.
It's a good location and it looks quite nice. The prices on their beer/pizza/burger specials draw you in but in terms of value they are just okay because the servings are pretty small and minimalist. They have a puzzling refusal to customise orders at all, even if it's as simple as leaving one ingredient off a burger. I get it if the Restaurant is full and everyone's really busy, but it was mostly empty. Pretty average all in all
UPDATE JANUARY 2018
Since my first review in 2014, Fatto became a regular of mine and friends. We have spent some time there and a good deal of money.
The last three visits have been disappointing to say the least. I noticed the service getting sloppier each time until my most recent visit, it went way beyond sloppy to rude, inadequate, and just plain bad.
The door person (supposed “maître d”) was an arrogant tool who should be hidden back of house, better still, sacked. He had a ratio problem, in terms of listening with two ears and speaking with one mouth. For instance, on arrival, I asked him for a wine list and he told me where the ladies rooms were.
We ordered a round of drinks and opened a bar tab, this turned out to be a nightmare when they couldn’t find our tab (based on our table number???), we wanted to pay it before we moved tables to eat (thinking we would be helping them out, saving confusion later). They blamed us because they couldn’t find the tab... then the food we ordered wasn’t delivered, two tables either side arrived after us and had finished, we asked several of the passing staff to follow up, to no avail.
We decided to leave to eat elsewhere, went to pay our bill, explained the food didn’t arrive and the door person, doing us a huge favour in his mind, said he will comp our meal - COMP OUR MEAL - what meal?
As we explained to him, we forgive bad days, we forgive mistakes, but when a customer has a genuine complaint, don’t be so dismissive and blame the customer. It’s not the mistake that is the problem, everyone makes them, it’s how you handle it. You handled it really badly from the moment we arrived to the moment we left.
Fatto has lost a considerable amount of potential income based on the fact they couldn’t provide decent service to their paying, returning customers. My group, and friends of my group, will not return to your sloppy establishment. Our tastes are a little more discerning than what you can now offer.
Three strikes-you’re out.
What do you think about pre-theatre menus? I am not a fan as I often feel like they are rushed and don't represent good value for money.Last year my sisters and I went to a concert at Hamer Hall so we booked Fatto Bar and Cantina for dinner, which is located next to the concert venue. To ensure we were finished on time we went with their pre-theatre menu. The set menu was 2 courses (with choices) for $45 per person. I don't think that was an unreasonable price however the meal had a few issues.The menu is split into Small Dishes, Medium Dishes and To Finish. We all chose from the first two selections.
Want a great view, affordable and tasty pizza? We have stumbled upon the perfect snack spot! @fattao Bar and Catina on Southbank, serves the most delicious pizza! We were feeling peckish at around 3PM and we saw a $10 pizza sign and we were sold! We had the Fatto: tomato base, spicy nduja (which was delicious), smoked mozzarella and marjoram! Although this pizza was quite small the flavours packed a punch and the base was amazing: soft, crunchy base and flavoursome! We highly recommend this eatery!
I struggle to resist when rabbit is on the menu in any form. My dad grew up in the country and we had rabbit regularly. We often had it had home when I was a kid. Luckily when I'm out, it’s usually better cooked than what I had at home! My order of gnocchi with rabbit and walnut ragu got the Italian waitress’s approval. I was similarly impressed when it arrived - tender gnocchi with a good bite, rich rabbit ragu, herby sweetness and nutty crunch. I may have made sure I got all the sauce once the gnocchi was consumed.
Here before a show at Hamer Hall. 12% surcharge on Australia Day. Bad burger ($12). The patty was half the size of the bun. The bun had been toasted, but was cold. The beef patty was not well cooked and was dry. The chips were ok but did not arrive until 5 minutes after we finished the burgers. Not returning.
Food Comatose
This meal reminded me of the rustic home made foccacias and pizzas you can get from the small Southern Italian village my family is from. Simple, wholesome pizzas paired with Peroni beer make for the perfect pre-show dinner (the restaurant is located around the corner from Hamer Hall and the Arts Centre). I was so excited to instantly devour this pizza, the delectable truffle oil burnt my mouth! Eat with caution. BY THE WAY, the pizza was only $10! Can’t go wrong, really.
Walked in on Monday afternoon for dinner. The ambiance is really nice sitting across from Flinders Station. A pity that you’re not allowed to dine outside where the sun hits you but only under cover or inside.
Ordered the ravioli, pumpkin, ricotta, brown butter, vincotto, sage and pine nuts, this was a soup of brown butter with some ravioli in it. The oil was dripping and had saturated everything. The sage leaves tasted like butter, the flavour was one of near burned butter.
Pasta del giorno, flavours were good but the tagliatelle, which is house made was actually stuck to each other and it was all quite salty.
Ordered also the wagyu carpacio which was really good and the only thing that we actually liked.
Service was somewhat ok, although when the food was brought to us no one asked us if we are ok for drinks, if we liked Parmesan with our pasta or anything else.
All in all a disappointing dining experience, it’s a pity as the location and the setting are suburb.
Came here for happy hour drinks - not cheap though, they are self service so we were pretty happy sitting by ourselves. Great white wine to start the night
Followthefoodmelbourne
Beautiful location to sit and have drinks/a light dinner before a show (especially on a warm night).
On the recommendation of our waitress, I chose the ravioli (pumpkin, sage, brown butter, ricotta, pine-nuts) which was very pleasant. The serving was a great size for me, (not too huge) and the flavours all worked really well together with the pasta being cooked perfectly al dente.
The rest of our table chose the spaghettini with spanner crab, chilli & lemon. There was quite a mixed reception to this dish. I got to try a bite and I found it really lacked a lot of flavour.
The service was wonderful and there is an all around great atmosphere at this place. Definitely keen to pop back and try one of there pizzas at the bar.
Was ignored by all bar tenders, then watched one of them break a glass when mixing a drink and instead of making a new one - strain into another glass?!? Food was overpriced and not that good at all. Only reason we walked in was the happy hour, will not be back. Worst service ever.
I was at Fatto recently and was appalled at the distinct lack of service & absolute rudeness and disrespect shown by the young boy behind the bar- his name was Danny. He was abrupt and dismissive and didn't even fill my wine glass to halfway- as he patronisingly told me that because I had taken a small sip of it to taste it, that I should get that much less in my glass! I told him that he shouldn't have offered me the glass after pouring a tiny splash unless he wanted me to taste it- as was the norm in any professional bar- to which he just rolled his eyes! I've never seen such an outrageous obnoxious waiter in all my travels and will definitely not be going back! This is a bar which is supposed to offer the Italian experience and the whole reason why I went there but this was far from it! This would never happen in Italy! Pathetic!
Croque Monster
We went to Fatto Bar for some afternoon drinks. They have some great specials for happy hour between 4-6pm everyday. We enjoyed the vibe on a warm afternoon in the outdoor section. We ordered some nuts and olives off the bar menu which were a great snack and some cheese. The cheese portion was super tiny even for one person and the price seemed inflated for what you got. I'd probably go a salumi instead next time.
I have been to Fatto a couple of times now and it is always SO good! I love the staff and the atmosphere is super chill and makes you feel so relaxed. The food is honestly the best Italian food I’ve had in Melbourne so far! The crab spaghettini melts in your mouth and the crab is so fresh you can tell by the popping flavour in your mouth! So delicious. The desserts are also 10/10 as well!
Beautiful location, came for a work lunch before heading to the NGV. We had the veloce lunch menu which was 2 courses + drink for $39. Food was good but not overly memorable, highlight was the creamy tiramisu. Service was a bit inconsistent - forgot one of the drinks and crackers on the cheese platter.
Came here last weekend whilst in Melbs for a quick bite to eat and couldn't go wrong as it was $10 pizzas and $5 beers with a lovely little outside area and a view of southbank. It's very; order, eat, leave style service, but that's exactly what we wanted at the time so all was well. Pizza was very tasty- in particular potato pizza with pesto and hazelnuts yummo! 👍
Katherine Chiu
Fatto is a great Italian place and they have been up and going for a few years now. But they have always been too expensive for us students. That is until their $10 pizza deal came up and their $5 Birra Moretti. Birra Moretti is an Italian beer which is pale in taste, but its also very wheatey in smell and taste.
Food was great, we all had a variety of main courses and they were delicious, even if on the very small side. The service, however, was atrocious. Left to ourselves we had to call a (young and very nervous) waiter over to place our order with after waiting. And waiting. He was almost shaking pouring the wine when he brought it, using both hands to pour uneven and very small tastes of wine into our glasses. When they took the plates away and we said to just give us a few minutes before deciding on dessert, we were then ignored for the rest of the night. And then finally when trying to pay, it took 3 attempts to get someone to come with the bill. The staff just seemed to be young, inexperienced and all over the show. Frustrating night.
We dined at Fatto on what seemed to be a very busy Friday night - not surprising, given there were many shows on at the nearby Arts Centre. We managed to make a booking that morning - lucky we did, because the place was packed. We were presented with the pre-theatre menu but also told that we had time to order from the full menu as we were in quite early. Overall, I found the menu quite limited, without many stand out dishes. It was also disappointing that pizzas are only available at the bar. The food is executed with skill and expertise, but is nothing to write home about. I had the king salmon, opting to forgo the famous crab spaghettini - I wasn't disappointed. Service could be improved, especially during busy periods. All in all, a fantastic venue with a prime location which is unfortunately let down by a limited menu and service that is a little lacking.
Ann
Wow. I visited Fatto on a lovely Saturday night with friends and family only to be very disappointed. They offer negroni specials, which was very enticing, however, this is unfortunately where the good ended. All of the dishes we ordered were nearly inedible and I was completely shocked...not too sure if we just visited on a bad night and were very unlucky or what. The service was great though, we couldn't fault the waitresses and the negroni specials were the only reason I have fatto bar the 2.5 star rating...it would have been 1 star otherwise.
Piero Pellegrini
Terrible experience , rude staff.
Admittedly it was prior to a performance at the art Centre and they obviously could not cope with the amount of guests coming in.
Not going there again.
Keith Lawrence
To be fair, my rating is based on the pizza and wine deal you get late at night. Fatto is the perfect informal spot for a glass or two of wine overlooking the river and an accompanying garlic pizza as the 10pm snack to soak up the alcohol. It's tasty without being memorable but no complaints.
Leah
The amazing crab spaghetti is hands down one of my favourite dishes in Melbourne! Love the ambience of Fatto especially in summer with the pop up lounges!
@melbourne.cheapeats
Came here for the $10 crab spaghettini day!
It was divine
Only thing I didn't like was being charged $4 for bread and olive oil. ☹️ - at least it was good bread 🍞
Meagan Sewell
Not the best value for money for the pizza's. Two of us Got the mushroom pizza and there was hardly any mushroom on it! As the main ingredient in the name of an item i would expect it to be the main ingredient on the pizza! The panino was fine. Fresh ingredients. Nothing spectacular. But for $8-$12 was what you would expect. The bottle of Chardonnay was delicious. By far the best thing about the lunch. But at $64 it would want to be nice! The service was fine, staff friendly and helpful if a bit rushed.
Came here for a pre-ballet lunch with my sister. The restaurant has a lovely set up and is very stylish and beautiful.
We were seated in the restaurant area and unfortunately for us that apparently precludes you from ordering pizza- especially disappointing given the $10 pizza lunch deal.
The waiter did offer to move us to the bar area but we were already seated and we decided not to bother.
We started with some prosecco and a bread basket while we looked at the menu.
We were trying to keep things relatively inexpensive for a lunch so my sister ordered the garlic pizza and I had the Harry's Chicken Sandwich. We also shared a bowl of chips.
The food was good - no complaints- even for the simple items we ordered.
Service was very good- our water was refilled regularly and the waiter was very friendly.
This is a good place to go pre-show and they make sure you are all done in good time for your show.
GG
Enjoyed a glass of Prosecco & biscotti! Service was lack lustre & disinterested, which is sad However a nice spot by the Yarra to watch the day go by if service isn't your thing.
Review from March 2017
If you fancy lounging alongside the Yarra River admiring the city skyline while afternoon turns into night, there are worse spots you could pick than Fatto Bar & Cantina. They've even got theatre-goers covered with a special pre-show menu. Naturally, I had my eye on a dish from the main menu, but even that arrived in plenty of time for us to head to Hamer Hall afterwards for our show. Top combination of flavours, too.
Pictured: zucchini, basil & ricotta ravioli, brown butter, vincotto, walnut
We had just finished viewing the latest NGV Winter Masterpieces ... Van Gogh. If you haven't seen it yet, I think it's worth going just because his works are so famous but the collection is much smaller than expected. Anyway, as we walked out of the gallery, we saw a sign saying "$10 pizzas". Not wanting to pass up a good deal we decided to check it out.
When we approached, we were asked if we wanted to be seated at the bar area or the cantina. We chose the bar area and it was outside but under cover. The ceiling heaters were on full blast so we felt quite warm. The view overlooking the Yarra River and the city was great too and it was good to show the mother in law (who lives in Perth) around. I think I'll bring more visitors here next time.
The bar menu had more than just pizza but that was what we were drawn to. We ordered a Margherita pizza and one which had this really spicy salami kind of meat. It was hot hot hot but so very good. Really happy with our flat bread pizzas and it was good value for $10 although they were on the small side.
Drinks list was pretty extensive and we were happy with our beer. Would definitely come here again!
Stopped in for a quick meal while waiting for a show at the Arts Centre. Food was very tasty and came out quickly. Atmosphere is a mixture of very chill and romantic cityscape dining. Would definitely come back.
Great, spacious location by the river, but food and service is unfortunately sub-standard. Myself and two friends went here for dinner...We ordered pre-dinner drinks, one of which never materialised for about fifteen minutes. We followed up with the waiter who said it was out of his control as it was the bar staff's job. This is strange, as I know that wait staff usually chase up drink orders from the bar staff.
The missing drink did eventually appear, although unfortunately the food was then a let-down. One friend ordered ravioli which came out looking like an entree/child's portion, even though it cost $25+
Myself and the other friend ordered linguini with clams which came with a grand total of four clams, and was bland in flavour, again for $25+
Came here last night with a group of friends. Food was good, well cooked salmon and steak, garlic pizza was nice. Was disappointed that the other pizzas on offer were only available to be ordered at the bar ... (we really wanted pizza). The menu was limited and staff although friendly, the service was really slow.
Meal was ok. Nice enough but I thought expensive for what you got. There was a hard piece of plastic in my meal. I told the staff and they did apologise but the kitchen didn't seem to care at all.
My partner decided to take me to Fatto for Valentines. He was told we could have a table but only outside at 8pm.
It was a 3 course set menu and $75 per head.
When we arrived there were a people inside and several empty tables. and it remained that way throughout the night.
Upon arrival the waitress told us we could order from the a la carte menu if we liked but we decided to stay with the set one as there were some specials.
Well all I can say was 'ordinary'. The whole lot.
We had oysters which were pacific with an iced orange liquid and they were bland and smelly. We also had prosciutto and it came with water melon and radish and ricotta - strange !!!
I won't be back as there's so
Many other good places on Southbank.
Plus why couldn't they offer us an inside table???
Very Disappointing!!!!
Their signature dish Crab Linguini was sloppy with juice whilst my partners was dry.
The shared desert of cheese cake was also ordinary without a distinct flavour.
Shazzamataz
5 out of 6 gave this a 3, 6th gave it a 2. Food looked fabulous (see pics) but unfortunately flavour wise it was just so so. Seevice was very ordinary, in fact would so far as to say it was drop and run service style... server would drop the food off and then run befire we could ask anything or request more drinks! Very expensive for a very average experience.
Beautiful place, we were perfectly welcomed and the staff was really nice .
Food was good but our linguine were undercooked a little bit. It was a good experience overall
Live_in_melbourne
Nice view and spacious dining place. Service was nice and food served super quick. But for the money we paid for...I don't think it's worth the price. Everything was tiny and the flavor was so-so, nothing outstanding in my memory to be honest...
MandyToorak
Hmm Fatto. I want to love you and in some senses I do.
Beautiful aspect is that great view over the Yarra to the busy side of the city. Another one is that these guys have a big emphasis on all the drinks I love like Negroni, Aperol spritz, Campari and tonic, you get the idea, bitter citrus is kinda my jam. Unforturely these drinks, while reasonably priced at certain times of the day, are watery and insipid compared to what you would get at other bars or restos. Reminiscent of band venues which water down whiskey: a dirty, dirty practice. Too much ice. And the slice of orange you get in these drinks? Did you need to use a mandolin to get it that thin? Stingy.
Some of my favourite restaurants technically cater to the theatre crowd (Ombra I'm looking at you [coincidentally italian too, not stereotyping]) but I think the proprietors of this restaurant are really gouging the good patrons of the Art Centre because there aren't a lot of options to eat around here, especially in this genre. The meals here are expensive, almost at Grossi Florentino prices but the quality is simply substandard.
Come here for the view and grab a drink, but don't bother with the eats. Maybe even grab a beer rather than the cocktails because I don't trust their manufacture.
Had our Xmas co party here and i had to say one of the worst places esp the food was horrible. Probably i had to blame our budget. But overall food was such a let down. Anti pesto looks more like left overs, the burgers were tasteless and only thing kept ppl around were the drinks! Pfft!
Michael Makridis
You pay for main serves. You get entree sized serves. Smaller than children's sized serves. 2 main course meals (100 grams each) and a garlic pizza (50 grams). (250 grams total) $65. Thats how you take the piss out of people. Disgraceful.Never again.
Patrick
Have been here multiple times and have never had any issues, fantastic food every time. Had the express lunch deal with the kingfish for entree and mushroom risotto for main, also tried the barramundi. All were delicious.
Harrykarakinos
I would have loved to have had the opportunity. Went twice for drinks and was ignored both times. Perhaps I'm not a celebrity however when I'm paying for drink or perhaps food, some service or acknowledgement would be nice
T
Loved the cocktails here and the view is spectacular!!
However, not impressed with the fact that we thought we were getting happy hour drinks but turned out to be full priced, should be made obvious I think! Other than that, the garden is gorgeous, definitely a great spot to have a drink at on a sunny day!!
Ok it was a busy night...a Sunday night with Louis Theroux live at Hamer Hall...but the long wait on a couple of bar snacks was ridiculous. Eggplants chips...there were four...were hard to eat due to the thick skins! The mozzarella bites...two of them....were not exciting. Overpriced due to the serving sizes and bad quality of both dishes. One positive...the waitresses were attentive and efficient...unlike the rude (?bar manager) guy behind the bar who took our order.
I came past Fatto time on the way to/from work. It seems to be fairly busy. I wouldn't normally go here, not sure why not. However, I was meeting up with someone who worked near Southbank as well, so it was a convenient location. We were there during happy hour and it said 'special drink $5' on the walls. The only drink that was $5 was beer. Wine was $7 and cocktails $9 (ones that were normally around $12). The price weren't really that exciting for happy hour. I suppose it's a little cheaper than average. Anyway, no special drink for $5. I had a glass of chianti. It was horrible. It might have been off even. I should have said something, but because I didn't know the person I was meeting that well I haven't. Service was ok.
Good vibe
Staff were friendly
Disappointed that the menu didn't reflect what was online.
Creme caramel lacked flavour for me but the chocolate mousse my friend ordered was great.
A great eatery whether it was for a pre-show dinner or a casual catch up with a friend. With views like these of the banks of the yarra and lovely service, you cant complain.
With small dishes to share such as a cheese and meat board and other delights, with some great cocktails or wine it was truly a delicious casual start to the evening.
Knowing we were there for a pre show dinner, our waiter ensured we had enough time to enjoy and also be on time for the show at the art centre.
Bob1972
An oasis in an area devoid of anything attempting quality. Reasonable though unremarkable wine list, great food & usually pretty good service.
Beau Jangle
I don't rate this place and there are plenty of better options in the city for these prices. The eggplant chips were leathery and had a awful flavour. I was starving and generally demolish anything fried but left them on the plate unfinished. The Rockmelon, Prosciutto, Leatherwood Honey, Rosemary starter was so so. Hard rock melon (not ripe enough) and not good enough.
The Chicken Cotoletta, Coleslaw, Mustard Fruit & Pinenut Dressing was like a chicken Kiev you buy from Coles and wack in the oven. Deep fried with very little flavour.
The 250g Black Angus Scotch Fillet, Pesto, Mushroom, Balsamic was ok. Cooked well and probably not bad value for $33
The place could be so much better for who the owners are. Maybe the owners have been more focused on the build of Stokehouse and let the quality slip.
This place is very stylish,sophisticated and elegant with , beautiful view of the Yarra river, also the city. Modern Italian food that is fresh and tasty, portions are sufficient. Large variety of wines. We started off with appetisers which were, bruschetta with crushed chickpeas and smoked octopus with Capers and Mint on Vienna bread. main,spanner crab meat with lime and lemon with spaghetti and eggplant chips served with chipotle aioli. All the food was well presented and divine. It's a beautiful place to have lunch and sit outside and enjoy the sunshine ,good food,good wine and good company. Has seating inside as well. Open for lunch and dinner. Service was friendly and attentive. Reasonably priced for such above average elegant restaurant. Enjoy.👍
Went at 2.30 on a Friday afternoon and had the place pretty much to ourselves.
We had the spaghettini and tortellini. I was quite taken aback when the waitress warned us that the tortellini was a small portion, as a lot of people had mentioned it in the past. If enough people have complained that a portion size is too small, then surely they must have a point?
We went ahead and ordered the bread a oil just in case. To be fair, the 8 small pieces did seem very little for the price, but it was absolutely delicious. As was the spaghettini. With the bread, it was just the right amount.
Really nice spot on the terrace and friendly wait staff made it a really nice experience overall.
Erin
Nice place for a worker's lunch, particularly in Southbank where some of the restaurants are 'all show and no go'. This place is both nicely fitted out, a nice location, and serves pretty good Italian food. It's also a pretty good place to go for happy hour after work.
I recommend the spanner crab pasta washed down with a glass of Pinot Grigio.
Melbourne Food and wine festival express lunch was value for money and delicious at Fatto Italian restaurant. Located next to Art Centre and great alfresco all day dining area. Friendly service and food was beautifully crafted. Dessert was little bland and small, but overall.. Great dining experience.
Had an absolutely brilliant long lunch with friends here on Saturday. Having reserved a table for 8 for 12:30 we all decided to go with the lunch special that included 3 courses and a glass of wine for $49. Spectacular value! For entree I had the san daniele prosciutto with melon, leatherwood honey and grissini. A lovely light way to start the meal. For main I went with the pan seared ocean trout with smashed zucchini and lemon yoghurt. The trout was perfectly cooked with a delicious crispy skin. Finally I finished off with the tiramisu with peanut butter mascarpone and salted caramel sauce. To say this dessert was a winner is an understatement. Definitely one of the best ive had in a very long time. Highly recommend Fatto Bar & Cantina!
To farewell the Secretary of a community organisation that I’m a part of, we went to Fatto Bar & Cantina. Fatto is an Italian restaurant in Southbank with superb views of the Yarra River facing Flinders St Station. It was my second visit to a Good Food Guide Italian restaurant in a week, so I thought myself pretty lucky!
Lunch today before show at arts centre. Very prompt service. We ordered a main of coral trout with zucchini and yogurt. We drank sparkling water and prosecco. Lovely vista. Interesting people watching. Pleasant lunch. Will return.
