Review Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen - Melbourne

Absolutely fabulous hidden gem! Japanese comfort food at its best. I had ramen noodles, as good as any I’ve had in Japan, my husband had a selection of small dishes which were all delicious. The prices are very reasonable and the staff are lovely, it will be our go to for a casual dinner when we are next in town.

The first time I had ramen here, it's so delicious. The broth is rich and thick with just enough spice to make your taste buds tingle but not too much where the whole dish becomes overwhelming--I love how each bite feels like an mini-feast! With an array menu options to choose from as well as fantastic service that makes sure everything goes smoothly (plus those hardworking staff members!), I recommend booking a booth if at all possible and take friends who appreciate good food. We will definitely be back!

you can choose what level you want on the broth, oil, soft or hard noodle. egg is lil sweet, and thin noodles is classic fukuoka style chashu don is sweet and good taste. ice cream is rich matcha flavor, very nice friendly staff

My favorite ramen place! Consistently high quality ramen and boatload of options to match your preference. Friendly staff and good portions. Slightly pricey but worth it.

Cool vibe to the place and good beer. You can have your ramen cooked basically however you want (you get a sheet to fill in). Highly recommend

Ramen was delicious. I enjoyed personalising my ramen by choosing exactly what I wanted from the soup to the noodles. the price was responsible for the ramen, until you have to add on the extra egg and sea weed. The staff were friendly. The atmosphere I felt was lacking, it was a bit messy. But the ramen was really good. I highly recommend checking this ramen place out.

Nice place with delicious meals and a good variety of Japanese beers. Service was prompt and attentive. Heap of different options as to exactly how you want your ramen!

This place is better than their competitor on Russell Street where you have to wait in line for 30-40 minutes (you know what I'm referring to and I don't know why their quality dropped). Ikkoryu has plenty of seating, no wait time, great broth and ramen with customisable options. Thanks for having me, I'll be back here next time I'm in Melbourne.

Water cups had a rim of thick dirt underneath. Looked like they were never put through a dishwasher. Portion size was tiny but luckily the ramen was terrible. Not worth $18.

Food ok but terrible service. Won't be back.

Dined here on thursday night in January. Fully staffed but mediocre service. <br/><br/>Uncooperative when it comes to swapping ingredients with intolerances. <br/><br/>Ramen portion is way smaller than hakata or ramen bankers on swanston street. Staff are also unfriendly compared to any other casual restaurant in Melbourne. <br/><br/>The curry katsu is pathetic. <br/>Chicken is the Size of a skinny asian females palm.<br/><br/>Their katsu curry sauce is thick and coagulated. <br/>Extremely salty , too thick and lumpy whilst at the same time stingy on the sauce. These leaves the rice dry. <br/><br/>Stick to KUU south Melbourne for katsu don. <br/><br/>Actually just stay away from this place. <br/><br/>A waste of retail space and an insult to Japanese cuisine. <br/><br/>Another note - why is the staff sweeping the floor when their customers are still dining here

R is for the realness Ikkoryu brings<br/>A is for the aromatic ramen broth <br/>M is for the man-made noodles and gyoza wrappers <br/>E is for the excellent service <br/>N is for the nice staff<br/><br/>This place embodies what it means to have quality ramen noodles in Melbourne. I tagged along with a Melbourne influencer who enjoys meeting new people and tasting what Melbourne has to offer. <br/><br/>I ended up having the yuzu Koshu ramen. Don’t be put off by the green broth because it was soooo tasty. Pork and citrus is a well tried and tasted flavour combination and with the unami, it just makes it extra special. I could eat this every week. I haven’t had anything like it before and every ramen aficionado, or even a casual fan should try this at least once. <br/><br/>Gyozas are tasty and they make their skins on site. If you feel like being extra naughty, get the deep fried gyoza skins, it’s the snack you never knew you needed. So addictive. We were also treated to the marinated pork ribs which were intense but tasty. I definitely had the meat sweats. <br/><br/>The restaurant itself, while spacious, has an intimate feel. It feels hidden but you’re in the Paris end of the CBD. An excellent sake and beer collection. Ikkoryu feels high end, but at reasonable prices. <br/><br/>Whether it’s a work lunch time thing, or an after work thing, or a dinner out with friends… you won’t be disappointed here. I’ll be going again, and by the time you read this, I was probably there a few times over. <br/><br/>In the name of the father, son and the holy noodles…. Ramen.

Great noodles, maybe nothing else though.<br/>Noodles were definitely good, broth was delicious and customisation was great.<br/><br/>Ordered the tataki which was questionable, very dry and zero sauce??? Can't tell if it was left out for ages or somehow their tataki was different to nearly every other tataki I've had.<br/><br/>Service and vibe was very chill, though understaffed, the poor workers looked stressed with only 2-3 people for a whole restaurant.<br/><br/>Would rate 3.5

This is one of the more underrated ramen places in our opinion. Ikkoryu Fukuoka is located in a spacious basement and offers delicious customisable ramen similar to the more popular places. <br/><br/>What sets this place apart is the yuzu kosho ramen, which is what we usually come here for. The broth is spicy, rich and flavourful. The noodles are cooked perfectly and the ajitama egg is marinated well. A word of caution to bean sprout haters - They come as a default so ask to omit if you want to! <br/><br/>We highly recommend coming to try, especially for this unique ramen!

A basement area, so can be missed if you're not sure what you're looking for (although signage is still pretty prominent). Excellent ramen,if anything a little salty, but it's good, fast and easy esp if you've just finished work in the CBD and can't be bothered cooking.

I've only been to Ikkoryu's other shop down La Trobe which has now been closed, so this is my first time visiting their main store. It is quite spacious for a ramen shop and is more relaxed rather than in a confined space.<br/><br/>We had some of their sake on offer in tall shot glass and was overflowed into a box. I've always questioned the cleanliness when Japanese restaurants do this, bottoms up!<br/><br/>Ramen itself comes with a full checklist of customisable offerings. We didn't mess around and got their tonkotsu, getting other variations is considered risky. For me, it's all about the broth. I got extra heavy and it delivered, pork broth was rich with little globs of fat, this went straight to my heart. As it was thick it clung onto the noodles quite well, the texture (extra hard) again was spot on providing a satisfying bite. The chashu was very soft, bamboo was lightly spiced and sweet but I found the ajitama a bit funky for my preference. We did not order any other dishes as you have the option to get an extra serving of noodles (free) and we made sure to capitalise on this. I suggest getting an extra serving when you are nearly done, depending on the texture of the noodles they can come out in less than a minute. Give it a quick swish around and you're ready for round 2.<br/><br/>Quite pricey for ramen especially when you include all the add-ons but well justified, this is some quality ramen. Love to try their other variations next time and maybe some other nibbles however it's difficult to pass up on an extra serving of noodles.

A bustling underground gem in Melbourne CBD where you can build your own ramen! The portions are generous and the broth is top notch. Service leaves much to be desired at peak meal times, but the staff are generally friendly.

I was super excited seeing that Ikkoryu offered thicker broths, similar to all the good ones in Japan! Unfortunately I was really disappointed this time. The broth was way too salty and it was not hot enough (heat wise not spice). It was rather look warm and you could tell it was very fatty. The gyozas however were one of the best gyozas I’ve ever had, but unfortunately the ramen was a let down.

Fantastic "hidden" ramen place. I say hidden because it is located in a walk-too-fast-and-you-might-miss-it spot (that, and also it's located away from all the other ramen places).  Very roomy despite what you might think while walking down a narrow staircase. <br/><br/>The menu is almost like a 'choose your own adventure' type menu where you can select how strong you want your broth, whether you want extra noodles, spring onions etc etc. <br/><br/>The portion is just perfect - not too small, not too big - just enough to make you feel full and satisfied :)

My score 4.0 stars. J and I had lunch here on Tue 28th of May. We got there lateish and it was quite full. There was a nice quiet bustle, spacious seating, including big bench seats. Background music was good. Guy who served us was laid back and friendly.  Water was brought to our table, as well as instructions for creating your own ramen and how to best enjoy your ramen.<br/><br/>J had a Vegetarian Ramen ($17). Lovely miso broth, rich and a bit salty (yummy umami). Boiled egg cooked just to the right point and added ground sesame seeds were great. Bean shoots, spring onion greens and thinly sliced fungus (nice and chewy), but pickled bamboo shoots were the star. A lovely experience.<br/><br/>I had a Black garlic ramen ($17 std). Heavy broth, normal soy, light ramen oil, spring onions greens, standard hard noodles, upgraded to pork belly for extra $1.  I also got the extra free noodle option. Broth fantastic, rich and garlicky but not over the top.  Thin black fungus strips and bean shoots. Overall flavour very creamy, could have done with pickled bamboo shoots to offset the richness.  Happy with firm noodles and thinly sliced pork belly was really good (and not like eating meat).  Extra noodles were a lot, but I enjoyed them, as it’s not a huge bowl.  <br/><br/>This is the first serious ramen place we’ve been to, so hard to compare with our few other poor experiences – however to us it seemed wonderful.  I’m sure there’s a lot of ramen experience we don’t have, but we enjoyed ourselves immensely…

Ramen is one of my winter go-tos and I was looking to try somewhere new. I was excited to try Ikkoryu Fukuoka due to its high rating and good reviews however was a little disappointed. We walked in on a Friday night to a full restaurant and waited around 10 minutes for a table. We ordered by marking our pieces of paper with our selected dishes and cooking preferences. We both opted for the spicy ramen with pork belly and my boyfriend added the special meat dish with pork belly, slow cooked pork and pork ribs as well as a serve of gyoza. I enjoyed the gyoza, and loved the dipping sauce. The ramen however was disappointing. My “hard” noodles had the texture of being cooked in warm water for a long time so they were hard on the inside and mushy on the outside but tasted floury. I also wasn’t a fan of the broth. I did however like the bamboo shoots and the pork which were both marinated and had a sweet taste. The ribs served with the other ramen was very tasty although difficult to eat. The egg was also cooked to perfection. Overall the meal wasn’t satisfying and I wouldn’t be keen to line up again.

We visited Ikkoryu Fukuoka ramen for lunch and it was basically empty when we arrived. The restaurant is situated on the corner of Flinders lane and Russell st, but you enter on Russell st. <br/>I tried the Original Tonkotsu ramen ($15) with extra kaedama (for free!), whereas my friend had the Yuzu Tonkotsu ramen ($17) and we shared a side of Chicken Karaage. The menu allowed us to customise our own ramen, but I mainly stuck to the recommendations. <br/>The karaage was probably one of the best that I’ve had- there were four pieces, and it was every bit worth the price ($10). It was so juicy and crispy! There was also sauce which you could dip it into, which made it even more delicious. My Original Tonkotsu ramen was also very good. The broth was flavourful but not too salty, and the noodles were nice to eat also (I ordered hard texture). The ramen in general was very filling, especially since I ordered an extra serving of noodles. The Yuzu Tonkotsu ramen looked amazing too, so I’m hoping to try it next time.<br/>The venue is very spacious and clean, and the decor is so pretty. The staff is also very attentive and helpful. I’m looking forward to being more creative with my customisation next time and explore other dishes on the menu!

One of the best Japanese ramen shop in Melbourne. I’ve been here couple of times and the taste, quality and service have always been impeccable. I’ve even tried their spicy ramen with 4 chilli level, and barely made out alive. This time around I tried the extra rich broth ramen. It is pure bliss. I even had extra noodle and funished it all up. Try the Asahi Black on tap. This time I went with sake (forgot which one it was) and really enjoyed it.

Good ramen that is customisable, personalised, and can cater to large bookings? This place does all of this well!<br/><br/>Today I ordered a combination fitting of one after a broth that is rich, with loads of meaty products. The broth was good, real nice taste to it however found that the addition of garlic (complimentary on the table) really helped establish the flavour fully. The meats were also very tender, easy to eat whilst the egg was soft and tasty too.<br/><br/>The flavours here come together well for a good, hearty ramen. Worth trying out for sure!<br/><br/>Food: 4/5<br/>Service: 3.5/5<br/>Ambience: 4/5<br/>Value: 3/5<br/><br/>Overall: 4/5

When I think about Ramen, Ikkoryu surely come to mind! <br/><br/>As a big fan of heavy flavour, Ikkoryu’s extra thick tonkotsu broth satisfy my tastebud and belly! Combined with its extra hard noodle and all the different type of pork (pork belly and pork ribs) what else can I ask for?<br/><br/>Oh yes, I can ask for free noodles too! (So there is never a case of me walking out of this underground venue without being extra full and satisfied!) <br/><br/>If you have yet to pay Ikkoryu a visit, surely do because you will not regret it! Indeed you might be hooked!

This Japanese restaurant has blown my mind in the best way possible! I was so pleasantly full, and ready to take on the cold, Melbourne winter weather outside after dinner.<br/><br/> I loved sitting in the side room, with the tables that felt like sitting on the floor but not at the same time. The artwork on the wall is so lovely. The restaurant feels like it’s brought a little slice of Japan to Melbourne.<br/><br/>The alcohol here is served in the coolest, gravity defining, glasses!<br/>The food here is phenomenal. The gyoza is crispy on the bottom, soft on the top & filled with juicy meat on the inside. The teriyaki ribs are a winning starter for me! The teriyaki glaze on the ribs is sweet, slightly salty & create beautiful caramelisation around the soft, juicy chicken ribs. The gyoza skin chips add a really nice crunch to your mouth, and very easy to eat!<br/>I shared the original tonkotsu ramen, and the new extra rich broth ramen, with my boyfriend. The extra rich broth is a serious winter warmer. The broth is so thick & packed full of flavour. I couldn’t finish a whole bowl because it’s very filling, but it’s so delicious that I wish I could! The original tonkotsu ramen is lighter, but still very flavoursome. Both ramens came with delicious noodles, beautifully made ramen eggs & sides. The pork in the original ramen was soft, and dissolved in my mouth. The pork ribs that were served with the extra rich ramen were huge! The meat fell off the bone so easily & was so juicy.<br/><br/>The service here is next level amazing! The food came out fast & the staff are so so friendly. I felt so happy eating in this restaurant, and I’m sure you will too!

Tried the tonkotsu ramen and was honestly underwhelmed. The garlic flavour was too strong and there was no depth in the soup. The spicy flavour one just had an overwhelming doubanjang taste that covers the taste of the tonkotsu. It was an average tasting ramen at best.

Wow. Hard to find bad things to say about Ikkoryu. The service is amazing even when busy, the food is consistently of high quality no matter what day or time it is and the atmosphere is so relaxing. Overall this ramen restaurant cant be looked passed if you are in melbourne and looking for a bowl of amazing noodles, be sure to get in there to keep warm during winter.

Amazing service!<br/>Tried the chicken ribs, renkon chips and croquettes!<br/>Everything was so hearty. the renkon chips were so addictive, and the croquettes came out blistering hot. The chicken ribs coated in sesame seeds were so sweet and crunchy.<br/><br/>I also tried the 4 wine tasting umeshu set, my personal favourite being the green tea umeshu. The yuzu sake was also super refreshing.<br/><br/>The new original tonkatsu ramen (super rich limited edition that is only available in the winter) was also another hit. This dish is so so filling, and it is perfect after a cold night out. Because it is quite heavy, it’s great for dinner and will send u straight into a good coma. Portions are also great. <br/><br/>The dessert (mochi and icecream) completely the meal, highly recommend ichigo (strawberry) mochi. Will definitely come again!

We ordered 2 tonkotsu ramen and Gyoza for the quick lunch. The ramen taste was so so, but they do provide free extra ramen. The Gyoza we’ve ordered is not that good as it’s all stick together and condiments were less. Maybe we will come back for next time.

I love Yuzu and this place has yuzu kosho tonkotsu on their menu. It was delicious. They’ve got other flavours as well : Miso, original, black garlic and the spicy one. You could just walk in. I hardly drink beer, but I do love black asahi. So, if you haven’t tried yuzu ramen or black asahi before, maybe this place could be your next destination for a lunch or dinner

Came here with a friend for a quick lunch on Friday and had the black garlic ramen and also some fried chicken to share.. this place offers free extra noodles! I have read a number of reviews & came across that the portion is quite small so I decided to add some extra noodles free of charge.. it ended up that I had too much noodles compared to the soup.. the flavour of the soup was quite strong & a bit salty.. the fried chicken however was crispy & nice.. <br/>If you aren’t that hungry don’t go for the extra noodles!

The atmosphere of this place is nice and on very hot days, very pleasant and cool as it's below ground. The ramen here is great and have tried up to three chilli in spiciness. Love the pork belly with ramen. Meal is full and recommended.

The clue is in the name: the Ramen is incredibly good! Take the spice scale printed on the menu seriously.... The proprietor was also fun and made the evening enjoyable!
The Casual Diner
Will come back for:<br/>+ Chicken Karaage <br/>* Yuzu Ramen<br/><br/>This little place hidden below street level away from the busy side of Russell offers affordable ramen and largely traditional Japanese food. I particularly liked the chicken Karaage (golden fried, succulent inside and with a generous dollop of mayonnaise) and the yuzu ramen (punchy taste of yuzu in a rich broth with perfectly cooked ramen). Some of the other dishes were just ok. The beef tataki wasn’t very fresh and was a little tough, and the classic ramen and black ramens were a bit on the salty side today. Maybe just an off day today, but I have always enjoyed the care given to the way they cook their ramen here. Will be back for more particularly when the weather turn colder!

I had some lunch here. Down a set of stairs is this ramen restaurant. They have a great sake bar here too. <br/><br/>The service was quick and friendly which was a great start. With the menu you pick your broth, your noodles and how you’d like them cooked, You also pick your protein and other additions. <br/><br/>I ordered a black garlic ramen w extra noodles (complimentary) and a heavy soup broth <br/>and this was rich, dark and full of flavour. <br/><br/>The noodles were perfect, the broth rich and the garlic was not overpowering. <br/><br/>I really enjoyed myself.
Yen Ling Yap
The portion is rather small compared to other ramen shop. Soup is pretty bland and the Chashu Don is nothing to shout about. Will not go back again.
Crabapples For Lunch
Came here on a 25% discount. This restaurant is run by Japanese staff and they serve a few kinds of ramen where you can customise several aspects of your dish such as the softness of the noodles and thickness of the broth. Ambience is pretty nice and it was quiet when we were there.<br/><br/>We ordered the standard tonkotsu and the black garlic tonkotsu. Both came with chashuu, seaweed, spring onions, fungus and bean sprouts. They offer a free extra serve of ramen (kaedama). We also got an egg for $2, and extra chashuu for $2. There is also an option to upgrade your meat to pork belly for $1. I asked for my extra serve of noodles to come on the side, but along with the main bowl of ramen (as opposed to after you've finished your first serve), but when the ramen came it was just one bowl. I asked if it already contained my extra serve of noodles, and after checking the waiter confirmed that it was already put in. Now if that's indeed the case, that was the smallest 2 portions of ramen I've ever eaten to be honest. There wasn't that much meat as with most ramen places but I still had so much left over I didn't need to order the extra serve of meat. I'm pretty sure it was still a mistake but the waiter had already checked so I can only take his word for it, and I had already used my free extra serve of noodles (any subsequent orders would be $2), but looking at our other bowl of ramen the amount of noodles was basically the same as mine. Shrugs.<br/><br/>The chashuu was not that great to be honest - it was pretty tough due to there not being much fat content. The pork belly was better, but still not exceptional. The egg and other ingredients were good but no different from most other places. The ramen broth was not bad, though I personally prefer the taste of some other places. That said, there are so many different broth flavours that this would just be a matter of personal preference. The lotus chips for $6 were decent, though the texture was somewhat similar to packet chips to be honest and portion size was a little small.<br/><br/>Considering the base price is $15 onwards, and the potentially small amount of noodles, I'd prefer some other places like ippudo or fukuryu, though there was nothing really negative about the ramen here.
Snowflower
Yummy customisable ramen in tasty broth. Ordered the black garlic and original ones. Did not disappoint. Good service and nice ambience. Will come back to try the spicy base. Two thumbs up.
Gee
I’m still by no means a ramen expert, but I’ve tried it many, many times, both here and in Japan, and I find some ramens are amazing and others I find quite boring. This was one of the boring ones. I had the back garlic ramen which didn’t taste very garlicky at all! The egg was already sliced in half and not as gooey as expected. The meal still tasted alright but hardly mind blowing. My girlfriend had the katsu curry and said it was nice but too much rice and too little chicken and curry. I’ll stick to Russell Street for my ramen fixes.
Rachel Louise
Totally delicious ramen - highly recommend the pork rib addition - also tried tataki, and chicken karaage which were equally great. Intimate setting and lovely attentive staff. Will be back! Thanks guys!

Avoid the food court- relaxed with Ramen. <br/><br/>I was visiting Melbourne for the weekend, and after a long day shopping, we felt like ramen for lunch. A friend suggested this place, and when I went in I thought it would be an expensive ramen. The restaurant is very clean, well decorated, staff very friendly, a well proper restaurant. <br/>Took my chance and sat down. <br/>It was my first time and the waiter explained the whole menu throughly. I chose hard noodle and level 2 of spiciness, spicy tobanjan ramen. And it was the best ramen I have ever had! It was cooked to perfection. And the perfect boiled Japanese egg that melt in your mouth is just like cherry on top of my cake! <br/>And at that point, I was happy to pay any price, but I was surprised as it was as much as the cost I’d pay at food court price in Sydney!!! Winning! <br/>

Although side dishes were disappointing and overpriced , Ramen itself was so nice. The soup is difference from Hakata style and got fish broth and soy sauce in addition to Tonkotsu broth, which was not overly rich but flavourful.

55 mins to closing time, we two people popped in ordered food quickly, (and there were other customers) yet they try to rush is off!?<br/>Japanese beer not imported but Australian made version - disappointing.<br/>Fried lotus chips way too salty. Glad that I asked for less salt in ramen, which was still salty. Small serve size as well. The waiter - Asian guy with hair bun- told me it should be decent sized.<br/>I should have walked up to Lonsdale Street instead of staying down hill of the street for my dinner. My fault being slack!
JR Chew
I hardly ever deviate from tried and tested staples i.e. the original Tonkotsu but the 'Yuzu Kosho' variant piqued my interest so that's what I went for. Big mistake - it tasted of nothing but salt and soy sauce! Chashu was underwhelming. Paltry amounts of noodles and toppings for $17. I'm afraid this joint is an 'avoid' for me.
Chronicles Of Nardia
Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen is located on Russell Street in Melbourne. Walking downstairs into the basement, it has a large dining space, bustling with hungry diners. We were seated in the private dining room which was gorgeous & included traditional low tables & a sunken seating area. <br/><br/>It was fascinating to hear the history of the place & the dishes from our lovely host Ineke. Keeping with tradition, most ingredients are imported from Japan & all their noodles & gyoza skins are made fresh daily. They had an amazing range of ramen & other Japanese food so we were happy to be offered some suggestions when it came to ordering. <br/><br/>We started with the gyoza, karaage & a half rack of marinated pork ribs. The gyoza were juicy & delicious & the skin was so thin yet managed to stay together & keep all the goodness inside. Some of the best gyoza we’d ever tried. The chicken karaage was crispy on the outside & perfectly tender inside. The rack of pork ribs was falling off the bone & full of flavour. The pork ribs are marinated & then slow cooked & the flavour of the marinade was absolutely delicious. <br/><br/>Then it was definitely time for ramen, the main attraction at this place. We loved the way we could order our base, customise our noodles, broth & oil as well as choose our own toppings. I opted for a fairly basic ramen while my friend chose a chilli base & different levels of broth & oil. The ramen was spectacular, my photos don’t do it justice. The flavours were incredible & presented beautifully. We slurped away happily as did all the diners around us. <br/><br/>We also tried a range of traditional Japanese drinks & sakes, presented on a gorgeous wooden paddle. <br/><br/>We had an incredible night at Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen, the staff were friendly & attentive & it was a thrill to experience authentic Japanese food, steeped in tradition. Thank you Ineke & team for an unforgettable experience. I’m looking forward to many more ramen nights here over the coming cooler months. A must try if you’re a fan of ramen & traditional Japanese cuisine.

Very disappointed. Ordered a tonkotsu ramen and a chashu don. Tonkotsu ramen was tasteless. Broth didn't have any flavour. The chashu don was thin slices of tasteless chashu on top of white rice flavoured with some type of soy sauce
Charlotte Cooper
Spent $50 on ramen, really disappointed.<br/>The egg is delicious but normally you’d have it for free, the soup is so salty, I have already picked Light soya flavour - black garlic has absolutely no flavour, only soya sauce flavour.<br/>Never had such bad ramen before <br/>

Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen is a beautiful, hidden ramen joint in the heart of Melbourne. The brand concept was established by Yamagoya Ramen in 1970, with over 200 stores worldwide now. <br/><br/>Their specialties include their famous Chikuho noodles, Tonkotsu soup bases, Gyoza, and Chashu. The noodles and gyoza skin are made fresh in store daily, and all the ingredients are of the highest quality, imported straight from Japan. <br/><br/>Heading down the stairs to the basement, you’ll find yourself in an extravagant dining room. It’s clean, spacious, and bustling with customers. But the most breathtaking part is their private function room, which offers traditional horigotatsu-style (low tables with with a recessed floor) seating. An authentic Japanese dining experience that took me straight back to Japan!<br/><br/>Ikkoryu offers a very special take on tonkotsu ramen. Their signatures include their unique Yuzu Kosho Tonkotsu (the only place in Melbourne to have it), and Black Garlic. The ramen is very customisable too - from the broth, the oiliness, the pork, the noodles to the toppings - so it can suit even the pickiest of eaters. A variety of Izakaya items are also offered on the side, as well as vegetarian/vegan and rice options too.<br/><br/>I decided to go for their special Yuzu Kosho Tonkotsu with normal oil level and soup broth. It was one of the most unique broths I’ve ever tasted - it was rich with a deep flavour, very pepper-y, and had a very nice hint of yuzu citrus which cut through the richness and balanced it out perfectly. The colour is a beautiful green from the spinach base too. The noodles (normal) were perfectly cooked - soft, but still has a bite, and soaked up all the delicious broth. They also offer free kaedama (extra noodles) which is amazing! My friend had the Original Tonkotsu which was faultless. <br/><br/>For toppings, I’d definitely recommend trying the Ajitama Egg and the Pork Belly/Slow Cooked Belly. The Egg is infused in a delicious soy sauce and the yolk is creamy and oozy as it should be. The Pork Belly was a highlight as it’s cooked till it’s so tender and melt-in-your-mouth. The layers of fat to lean meat are in the perfect ratio.<br/><br/>The Izakaya sides are a must here. We tried the Karaage, the Gyoza and the Half Rack of Slow Cooked Marinated Pork Ribs. Fried chicken is everyone’s favourite, and the Karaage is so crispy, juicy and addictive. The Gyoza is amazing too - they make their Gyoza skin in-house so it’s super thin and delicate! It’s simple, light and the perfect side snack. And the Pork Ribs were some of the best we’ve had. Half a rack of the most tender, fall-off-the-bone meat, served with a side of wasabi mayo (which it doesn’t even need because the pork itself has so much flavour already). <br/><br/>For drinks, we had three varieties of Umeshu - Choya Mutenka Umeshu (the original - sweet and fruity), Choya Green Tea (very light and refreshing, and Satsuma Kokuto Umeshu (deep and syrupy). I definitely recommend trying the Choya Green Tea as it’s so light on the palate and goes very well with the ramen and sides.<br/><br/>Lastly, the service here was exceptional. The staff were so kind and attentive, and we were looked after throughout our whole meal. It may be slightly pricier than your average ramen joint, but it’s definitely shown through the high quality, the passion and the love that comes in everything they do.<br/><br/>If you’re looking for an exceptional ramen experience, Ikkoryu is your place to go. I would highly recommend anyone to come and try this place, and I will most definitely be coming back! <br/><br/>I would like to thank Ineke for having me here to try their delicious menu.
Hon
Ramen was ok, th restaurant is a little hidden.<br/>The food look amazing but the taste was not bad.<br/>I'm not sure if i would recommend the ramen.<br/>

Severely underwhelmed by this ramen joint. I am not familiar with ramen from Fukuoka, may be it is more bland and watery than the ramen up the northern part of the country. The ramen itself was ok, the texture of the belly was nice and the black fungus was crunchy, but the broth just lacked flavour. <br/>If you love gyutan normally and have always had it served hot, this will give you a shock. With the texture of spam, this cold cut was actually rather gross.<br/>The service was fine when you get it, they were quite understaffed for a Saturday lunch. <br/>Verdict: there are much better ramen places around town.<br/>

First visit of many to this restaurant.  The food was very reasonably priced and the servings were decent.  The service was very genuine and friendly.  The staff really took the time to explain how to order and what their popular dishes were.  We thoroughly enjoyed eating here and will not hesitate to visit again.

This is one of my favourite Ramen places in Melbourne! You can customise your order,so eating here doesn’t ever become boring! <br/>The staff are absolutely lovely and very kind. <br/>The food is very filling so it’s great value for money, as well as hearty and comforting.<br/>Atmosphere wise, the place is beautiful and clean. I love the artsy decorations that are more elegant than tacky like some places can be. <br/>Just writing this review already makes me want to return here! I highly recommend this gorgeous restaurant.

The Christian doctirine of the Trinity holds that God is comprised of three coeternal persons; The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit.<br/><br/>Ikkoryu Fukuoka however has presented the fourth hypostase; The Flavour<br/><br/>This place is great. The atmosphere is fantastic, perfect for a date, business gathering, or dinner with friends or family. The staff are lovely, the prices are great, and the food is fantastic. I have been regularly taking people here for a couple of years now and have never been disappointed.<br/><br/>Highly reccomend to any and all in the area!

What a lovely DIY ramen place! The interior is modern and stylish - definitely helps to whet one's appetite. <br/><br/>While it can end up being a little pricey with the various add ons, you essentially get what you pay for. <br/><br/>The ability to choose everything from the texture of the noodles to the amount of ramen oil used.....it reminds me of those choose your own adventure books!<br/><br/>The Japanese style friendly service is another plus. We will definitely be coming by again soon!

Ramen is okay, not strong flavor, a bit expensive, i ordered one topping and one side, total was $32, just enough for myself🤣🤣🤣, have had better ramen, good service tho

I don't really see what's so good about this place. Just average tasting noodles. Maybe I'm not enough of a Weeaboo to appreciate Japanese food?
Hao
friendly staff. large portion of noodle (with free extra). love the yuzu tonkutsu flavour and it match the heavy broth well. egg and belly are also good.

Nice Japanese ramen resto that serves ramen in soup that you can choose the level of spicy. I consider myself to be able to eat very spicy but the hottest soup available is super hot. It's actually burning my mouth. I came here few times and their ramen always consistent. Flavorsome with thick broths. Always happy with the quality therefore keep on coming back.

It was a “not good enough” for me. The competition is fierce and they just don’t make the cut compared to their peers. The soup base was bland, noodles were stock standard, pork was not tender enough and service was non attentive (even on a quiet night). Disappointing.

If you've been to hakata gensuke, ippudo, musashi. Then I wouldn't recommend try this... This is nothing close. It just one of those type of non japanese business putting up some Japanese name for their shop after seen ramen business done well. Don't waste your time.<br/><br/>Update: this is how they do take away fried rice. (check attached photos)

I am horrified and shocked by the seemingly low rating of this restaurant compared to significantly lower quality ramen being rated higher (Mr Ramen San is *not* a 4 star restaurant). <br/>Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen could be argued to be the best ramen in Melbourne. The restaurant allows you to customise your ramen based on broth richness, saltines, softness of noodles and more.<br/>The broth is thick and has a lot of flavour. It is rich, even if you choose the regular over the heavy or extra-heavy options. If you don't believe me, just look at the photos of the broth!! Look at all that flavour!<br/>The flavours are amazing and the egg is seasoned very well. For the chilli lover, there are 7 different levels of heat. Even for people who like extra spicy food, anything above a 3 will burn.<br/>There are semi private, large table options for groups, and the guy who runs the place is awesome. This is clearly a 5 star rated ramen restaurant and I dare you to argue otherwise!

A spacious Ramen destination down the far south end of Russell Street. I'm sure it gets overlooked considering the wealth of Ramen restaurants closer to Chinatown, but it shouldn't. While lots of shops only offer one (if any) veg ramen, which is usually dry, this spot offers three. One is dry with a sesame sauce (my choice) and two are broth based- veggie or vegan. You can also build your own bowl with a meat base and add-ins of choice. If you're after a drink, they also stock all the best Hitachino beers to complement your meal.

Heavy broth lacked depth of flavour with too much fat particulates but ramen noodles weren’t too bad. Gyoza took a while to arrive and unfortunately not worth the wait. Still yet to find authentic ramen like in Japan..

The quality of Ramen was mediocre and the dessert was very poor. Despite the restaurant being half full, we waited 40 minutes for our dessert: a scoop of ice cream and a piece of mochi. It turns out that the restaurant had forgotten we ordered the dessert, despite the ordering system being ticking their own forms and placing your name on it. I would not recommend this as a place to eat when there are so many in Melbourne which are higher quality and cheaper by about 5 dollars on average.

Worse ramen I've ever had. Ramen temperature was not evenly warmed Cashu was cold. Rude service. 3 yo toddler was told to behave just because he was touching the sesame bottle.

Decided to have lunch here the other day due to good reviews from friends. The place is very nicely decorated, the staff efficient and helpful. I got the black garlic broth, with extra belly meat, with chicken wing and salad as side dishes. It became clear to us that we ordered too much when the ramen was served. <br/><br/>The broth was rich and full of flavour - a bit too rich as I ordered 'heavy'. The egg was perfectly marinated, and slices of pork were bursting with flavour, with just the right amount of fat on it. The extra belly meat I ordered was the highlight, it was a huge chunk of meat, but a bit too much fat for my liking (almost 50/50). The side dishes were mediocre, but then again, one bowl of ramen will be enough, even for those with a big appetite, as they offer free noodle top up if you need.<br/><br/>Definitely recommended for ramen lovers.  <br/><br/>Food: 4<br/>Service: 4<br/>Ambiance: 4<br/>Price: 3

Tried the black garlic and yuzu to lotus ramen. Both very good. Would highly recommend ordering the heavy broth rather than the normal broth. The slow cooked pork belly is pricy but delicious. The tempura is also really good here - super crispy.

Food was below average for its price. Too much msg in the soup that now my tongue my swollen. On the positive side the egg was good. Portion sizes were okay. Also the garnish looked like it hadn't been washed.

Staff were efficient, ramen was filling with a great tasty broth, and the entrees were tasty too. I recommend people get the black garlic broth - lovely.

We really enjoyed the ramen here. We had the original tonkotsu and the miso tonkotsu. Both broths were full of flavor. Pick how you like your noodles, broth and other toppings. I added egg and black fungus for $2 each. <br/>We shared the chicken katsu with curry sauce. Chicken was very crispy. Also check out monthly specials on their website. We got $5 Kirin beers.

Have walked past and wanted to visit for ages, so when we finally went I really had to load up my ramen! Loved all the customisation options and the prices are super reasonable. I had the Original Tonkotsu ($15) with double meat ($2), extra egg ($2) and extra noodles (free!). It was so pretty and soooo filling. Mr K had the chicken katsu curry ($10) which was delicious but was severely lacking in sauce. Not sure if they would give extra but if we go again we would definitely ask!

Before charge me $7 for extra soup it's better to tell. Thanks for surprising. First and last time been here. This is just not reasonable :)

A lovely place to enjoy generous servings of ramen. This place offers customers the flexibility to choose additional ingredients as well as the texture of noodles, level of flavours and the broth's saltiness. Definitely recommend this place for anyone with a big appetite for ramen.

Had visited this venue when it initially opened but had not ventured back since so decided to go back on a cold Melbourne autumn night and frankly was very disappointed. When we received our Ramen, there was hardly any soup in the bowl. The pork was not very tasty. Not very good value for nearly $20 a bowl of ramen when you add Egg/Seaweed etc. Service wasn't great either as we also ordered Chicken Karage but it never arrived, it was not particularly busy the night we attended as well. As the dining room faces the open planned kitchen the two chefs standing with their arms crossed staring blankly into the dining room didn't really make for the best ambience either.

Came here a couple of times and always ordered the spicy ramen! Tasty and satisfies my craving for delicious ramen. Also had the fried chicken which was good.

Follow my ig: @andriselly<br/><br/>Went here based on my friend's recommendation. Arrived at 9 pm & the place was still packed with customers.<br/><br/>Ordered spicy tobanjan level 3 . I love how I can customized everything.<br/><br/>The broth was amazing. First spoon and I was like "wow this is spicy good!" But as I eat, I can't help but feel the burn in my mouth 😂<br/><br/>So spicy although I'm a die-hard fan of spicy food.<br/><br/>Btw I also love thin wide pork slices with no fat on it, the noodle texture was so good. It has the right consistency.<br/><br/>Love it! Will be back for more someday

Service was superb! Flavors were fabulous too! However, some of the food was really heavy in salt like the fried rice and tempura, perhaps the salt weren’t mixed in properly?? With a bit of extra care it’d be 10 out of 10.....

Nice quiet restaurant and a good place to have a quick yet hearty meal.<br/>I orderes the black garlic ramen with pork belly and bamboo. Broth was light and the noodles were soft just like I asked for. Wish the garlic flavour was a bit more stronger but now I have garlic breath so if that's something to say by. Overall would definitelt recommend, can't go wrong.<br/>"The yuzu ramen was good but not a strong yuzu if not any yuzu taste" quote friend

I came here last month and had the normal ramen with light broth. I liked the atmosphere and the fact that Extra noodle was free. However the pork was not very tasty. I think their other outlet is better .

Really nice and garlicky black ramen!! Love all the sides, especially the renkon chips!!! Would definitely come back since its so close to my work in the CBD

Had yuzu ramen. Free extra noodle but you need to add extras like egg. Wings were tasty. Good service. Pork slice were delicious and soup was good enough for me.
Theknifeandforktalk
I was brought here for my first ramen experience! Told that this place reminded my friend of ramen she got in Japan. I came in blind and unaware of what to expect and walked away a bit disappointed. Not to say the ramen wasn’t good but maybe just not for me. I was also incredibly thirsty afterward with this feeling in my mouth like I’ve had buckets of salt and possibly MSG in the food? <br/><br/>Wait staff were lovely and social.
Amy123
Expensive ramen but lacking in flavour. Could be more generous with the toppings. I would rather a bowl of pho that's more flavorful and satisfying. Renko chips were good but again, pretty expensive too! Won't be coming back.

Another ramen shop on Russell Street, Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen is located in the basement under Bang and Olufsen.<br/><br/>Initial impressions weren't too great - has a vibe similar to that of an actual basement, spurred by the visibility of cardboard boxes, dark areas of the shop which can be easily seen by the public.<br/><br/>Upon seating, you're presented with a paper menu of which half is taken up to customise your ramen. While a good idea, picking options such as the amount of ramen oil used, the thickness of the broth, the softness of the noodles and such. However, as the food always has to be adjusted the taste can become inconsistent.<br/><br/>In a particular instance of this, I had ordered a heavy ramen base which on its own had the good, expected flavour of a heavy base. In contrast, my counterpart had ordered a normal ramen tonkotsu, of which the base lacked flavour. The depth of my ramen base should have been in the normal. Unfortunately this was not the case, displaying the weak strength in the soup base at Ikkoryu Fukuoka.<br/><br/>This also carried on to other parts such as the chashu - the unspectacular taste of which was to be expected considering the poor base. In turn, this also affected the noodles - of which taste is amplified by the ramen base. As such, this too was quite underwhelming.<br/><br/>The gyōza was good.<br/><br/>Other than that, am slightly disappointed. On to the next.

Visited for the first time last week. I live for Japanese food; I love Ramen. I had the heaviest Miso Tonkotsu I could order with hard noodles and heavy oil, Ajitama and Nori. Awesome. Above all the slow cooked Pork Belly was as fine as I have ever had. Oishii ;-)

The ramen here is not bad and quite unique as it has one with green broth and one completely black ( black garlic) . The ramen customization is super cool and it ensures that you can select the proper portion size for your appettite

Surprised by the quality and quantity. Ordered the yuzu tonkotsu with belly chashu ($1 extra). The soup is very peppered spiced, not to my likings. But the belly chashu is the one you must try from there. That day was given extra at no cost (thanks!). Best chashu i had tried for a ramen point of view. It was so delicious that I forgotten the soup was spicy (i couldnt take pepper spice). The noodle was almost similar to ones i had in Tokyo. Well, for the price is ok, can be a little expensive if given 3 slices instead of 5. The gyu tan yuzu was also the highlight. The tongue itself is very flavoured and soft and tender! Just the yuzu again very peppered spiced. But managed to gobble up the whole thing due to the deliciousness!!!

Black garlic ramen with extra dose of garlic is what i will return for... the option to add extra noodles for free is definitely an added bonus

Wanted to try this ramen after seeing a yummy looking photo my friend posted on FB. We decided to come here after lunch time so there wasn't much crowd. <br/><br/>The ramen here is fully customizable to individual liking, from the soup base, noodle's texture, to types of pork and toppings. <br/>We ordered tonkotsu ramen base and spicy tobanjan level 2, with different texture of noodles and different thickness of broth and oil. <br/>We had a gyōza as well as an entree. <br/><br/>The ramen overall is average, nothing to shout about, but personally I enjoyed the gyōza. <br/>Price is reasonable, spacious place, and friendly staff.

I would say a bowl of ramen averages $20 after a few toppings. Standard toppings I think were chashu (quite a generous serve) and some seaweed.<br/><br/>Standard chashu is very dry. The slow porked belly was so much better but an extra $5.<br/>I thought the service was generally quite sloppy except for probably the senior on for the day. The business probably isn’t making as much as it should as they didn’t actively offer drinks menus or ask to take drinks.<br/><br/>The aircon is barely existent. Very tough for those hot summer days.<br/><br/>I think it’s okay - an enjoyable but not superb bowl of ramen at around $20.

Always come here with a massive group to try out the deadly spicy noodle challenge. Had the black garlic noodle, pancake and chicken katsu which was really good but the dessert wasn't really worth $10 for a scoop of ice cream and a small amount of Mochi. However everything else was awesome, the service was pretty down to earth.

This place is our local ramen joint and we have been coming here for the past 6 months since we moved to Southbank. The ramen is absolutely delicious, the service fantastic and it’s never too busy to get a table. The ramen is good quality and consistent! Will continue to be our favourite Friday night meal

Renkon Chips: Quite nice, cut thicker than Ajisen's hence not just burnt flavour.<br/>Spicy Teriyaki Wings: The wings are cooked too crispy (so it got too dry), but the beautiful spicy teriyaki sauce came to the rescue.<br/>Ramen: So this is what the basic setup looks like without anything extra, served in light tonkotsu sauce and hard noodle.  If you're not a big fan of tonkotsu, the light tonkotsu soup here is light enough to be a miso-based ramen.<br/><br/>The black fungus and beansprout themselves don't have much flavour, and the chashu slices on their own were a bit dry so I would suggest mixing them all up before consuming.  Once all of this is done, it's a pretty good ramen.<br/><br/>Service could be more attentive.  They never asked for our drinks order (my friend have been waiting for them to ask since she was keen to try the Choya Plum Wine Soda), later on we asked for water for drinks but our water bottle was never refilled.

Located in the basement. Anglo urban interior with some Japanese paintings & Japanese seating kinda mix match like a cafeteria style. Staff were fast in taking orders. You have the option to choose hardness of ramen noodle, flavour & oiliness of the broth etch. Small size soup serving & plenty of toppings. Deep pork flavours & extra egg I ordered had that guie-ness. Chashu pork slice was small however packed with flavour. Broth had that garlic taste marinated well with pork flavours. 17 for ramen & extra $2 or so for egg. Recommend to try Yuzu ramen had the Yuzu citrus flavours & spicy flavours cuts the richness of pork broth. Overall service, flavours, atmosphere, food quality against price gives an overall rating of 3.2*/5.

Ambience: 3.5/5<br/>Food: 2.5/5<br/>Service: 4/5 <br/>Will I return: No <br/><br/>This ramen restaurant is located down some stairs in the basement which is probably why the air circulation within the restaurant was really poor. You could smell all the oil and smoke from the kitchen which is something I really don’t enjoy at a restaurant. I’m not a ramen connoisseur but this is definitely my least favourite ramen chain restaurant around Melbourne. The serving size is on the smaller end but you can order free extra noodles. The broth tasted pretty average but the pork chasou was tough and didn’t taste really fresh. We also ordered the ox tongue which had an interesting flavour and the sauce was way too salty. The ox tongue itself was thick and tough to chew which made it a chore to eat. They did have a cold ramen dish which I thought tasted ok. The staff are courteous and prompt with service and the meal was served quite quietly. The ramen itself was a miss for me.

As close as the real thing .... good effort.<br/><br/>I love Fukuoka, on my first visit there it was all about Ramen hunting, from about 270 - 1,500 Yen per bowl. Price is never an indication of how good the Ramen is in Japan and just about anywhere else .... the best we've had was under 300 Yen, independent shop.<br/><br/>I'm not a fan of franchise restaurant, however this Red opulent basement den is super inviting and comes with comfortable, albeit a little awkward with shoes off & on semi Tatami room. <br/>Their Ramen by the time you customised it are a bit pricey but is probably as close and nearly as good with those Ramen in Fukuoka, big serves and comes with a free Ramen too, save some broth. It complemented with other fares and plenty of drinks. Fusion style Gyoza skin with their special Wasabi sauce was a re-order item.<br/><br/>Kanpai-on. JT-05/10/2017.

Been here twice certainly not the best Ramen in town. I had their Orginal and Spicy Tonkotsu, ramen broth had ntiny bits of pork which is not usual. Not a big fan of their Chasu. Friendly staff and quick service.

Best Ramen in CBD! Beautiful Japanese decorations. Tried a few different types of ramen! You can tell their RAMEN is prepared with lots of heart. From the soup to the noodle and the meat all well prepared! And the service was fantastic so friendly and helpful. To help you choose the Ramen of your life! The price is very reasonable considering the quality you are getting! Must come back every time I feel like Japanese Ramen!

I like their tonkotsu ramen with seabura. It might not healty, but it make soup more creamy. The staffs were friendly and interier was nice. They also have lots of seats. Be careful at miso ramen, they are not the one of Japanese miso ramen, and their miso remind me of chinese ramen.

This venue is beautiful. Come here with a large group so you can sit in the traditional Japanese seating area. Remember to take off your shoes though. I knew this but was overly excited that I got to sit in that area 😂 <br/><br/>I love that you can choose the texture of the noodles and choose the amount of oil, chilli and other ingredients that are placed in the ramen. This way you can ensure that the ramen suits your tastes. It's still not 100% authentic but still closer than a lot of other ramen restaurants in the city. <br/><br/>Customer service was great and very attentive.

Tasty ramen. Good, authentic flavours in a great setting. Asahi black on tap makes it all that much better! Feels like your in Japan, from the greetings to the goodbyes
