Review Nam Loong Restaurant - Melbourne

Jess Buck
The restaurant was empty except for 2 tables, we were sat right next to the only other patrons in a pretty cramped corner. Call me old fashioned, but I still like social distancing! Whilst looking at the menu, we asked for water and tea for the table. Two filthy plastic cups were put down. The cups had stains all over them and mould/ dirt on the INSIDE and outside at the bottom. When I told the waitress there was dirt inside the cup, and I'd like another, she said no, it's fine, it's only at the bottom, underneath. I knew it was caked with dirt inside the cup as I had just scratched some of it off with my nail.. I said no, they are filthy, and this is unacceptable for a restaurant. As she went to get new cups, I noticed my tea cup on the table was also visibly dirty around the rim. We told her we wouldnt be staying, and left. It looks like we might have saved ourselves a bad night, after reading the bad reviews about off tastes and recycled oil. I'm wondering if this place has been inspected...

This is my favourite spots for Cantonese cuisine.. still remains very high standard even due to so many lockdown and hard to survive with business.. always love their crab dishes, sweet and sour pork, lobster etc.. too many to share.. also nice service and reasonable price

My favourite restaurant from Chinatown. The flavours and quality are exactly that I am looking forward. Very delicious! Thanks

Decent Cantonese style restaurant. Shame that the interior seems slightly unkept with reeks of cigarettes smoke.

Great value of lobster. $58 for a lobster of 650g. Highly recommend deep fried lobster with garlic and black bean. However visit this place on Easter Sunday and staff completely forget to put the order through the system. Waiting for 30 mins without any foods served. Ruin excitement of the night. Manager need to improve the operational flow or add extra staff to achieve better management but staff is friendly even though that is a big mistake and really make it up at the end

Before lockdown : big portions ,cheaper priced After lockdown: small portions ,overpriced food

Stay clear of this place. Overpriced rubbish on a plate. Pros: - Quail was tender and juicy. Very good. - Donut stick was fresh and crunchy Cons: - Lettuce pork dish was $6 really?! Raw onions and pork. The meat could fit into a tea cup. - Chicken corn soup tasted like water. - Century egg congee had half a Century egg, scraps of meat - Black pepper beef... So tender... It was blue. The cut of meat had a chewy piece every bite. Struggle was real, felt like raw meat with rubber bands. Was also super dry. I was here a little over a year ago, it seemed alright from memory. I won't be back though.

Stuff is around by moving our table and taking too long to take our orders. The food is good whoever. Great place for a late night supper.

Came for work lunches. On both occasion the wait time to get your meal can be quite long so always give yourself plenty of time if you wish to visit here. They have a big selection of meals to choose from. Food quality is good and service can be a tad slow. It's good for a cheap and nice meal if you don't mind the wait.

One of the best Cantonese Guangdong Cuisine restaurants in Melbourne. A hidden gem.

My friend from Hong Kong introduced me and 12 other friends to this restaurant one evening.

At first glance, I thought this restaurant was just another Chinese restaurant.

But I soon realised how amazing the food is. Will definitely be back again to order the same dishes and more.
Nam Loong is a very legitimate Guangdong (Cantonese) restaurant. There may be some influences from Szechuan, but you won’t find any sort of westernisation here. That being said, genuine does not always equal good as the food served here would be considered very average in China.

We ordered the Szechuan Boiled Beef and Fried Vegetable Prawns which were very mild in flavour, while the Water Spinach with Fermented Tofu was incredibly smelly and is definitely an acquired taste. The Steamed Murray Cod on the other hand was quite delicious and prepared decently.

The service and environment was okay; the waitress was attentive but the atmosphere was a bit uncomfortable. Strangely, when we were there, the TV was displaying a picture of a swimsuit model, which made the eating experience a distracted one. Overall, for those who enjoy some of the more westernised Chinese restaurants, the food here could come off as strange or even pungent depending on what you order, but if you’re after some real Chinese food (albeit a bit mediocre), then maybe give this place a go.

Ordered the roast pork and bean curd on rice. It was a bit disappointing as I really loved their eel fried rice and thought this was going to be as good. But there was hardly any sauce on the rice, and a few pieces of fatty roast pork without much flavour. Probably not going to order this again.

Didnt had time to take photos of the other dish. So we had the fried calamari, fried rice with salty fish, vegetables and kind of omelette egg for 6 ppl, sweet sour pork and spend $20 each. The dish was pretty standard and ok :)

Best and cheapest chicken curry and congee in the city. Can get super busy during lunch and dinner. Also recommend custard bao and chinese sausage bao.

Service: average
Ambiance: asian music, basic seating but kind of dirty.
Food: Recommend the Salted egg yolk chicken is well made. Full of flavour and full of meat. Fried rice is difference and comes with a somewhat egg chiffon sauce.

Went for dinner on a Thursday night and the overall experience was good. The food was served quickly, with good quality and a generous portion. I would recommend the sampan congee and the spinach, but not the barbeque pork. They also served complimentary prawn crackers before the meal and sweet soup afterwards. The service staff were attentive and professional, but not very warm.

Super nice place to bring your family and friends. I planned my fathers birthday there and the staffs are super cooperative with how it all went. Great food, especially the snow crab cooked with goose liver.

Worst meal we have had in a long time. The door does not close, so the restaurant was very cold from the outside breeze. Cigarette smoke smells also blew in with the breeze. The food lacked flavour and "wok power". The fried dumplings were not good and didn't even taste fried. The one good thing is that the noise level inside was acceptable, unlike many other Chinese restaurants where I can't even hear myself think.

One of the few places opened on the Sunday late night in city. No expectation. But not one of the good ones in Chinatown. I would probably prefer steam bao next block down. ( same name) The seafood there must be good reputation because all ordered some sort of seafood with noodle base. My service person was friendly.

This is your run of the mill Chinese restaurant. Choices not too big and food taste is average. I would still prefer to stick with their steam bao served in the other outlet down Russell street. I would still prefer Supper Inn if given a choice but we have try other outlet..

After reading the reviews online, I head down to this restaurant amidst all the other chinese cuisines available. We waited for our turn for 5 minutes and this was around 8.30pm. The service staff was courteous and after we had ordered finish our food, they gave us a complimentary bowl of soup. We ordered fish congee, deep fried pork ribs with salted egg yolk, sweet and sour fish, kai lan. The congee is really thick and the fish was fresh. The portion of the dishes was pretty substantial and I came home with boxes of left overs. Overall, the ambience of the place is really lively with every table having their own conversations and yet I was oblivious to my surroundings as I tucked into my food. The crabs do look good and I would have gone for it if not for budget restrains.

The meal was satisfying only thing was the fish seemed to little bit slim, would have been happy to pay more to see the fish first and seeing if he was fat enough for the appetite.

Five star spice chiken spare ribs - also known as the oriental edition of KFC. Deliciously greasy deep fried chicken spare ribs tossed in moreish spice combination of five star salt, onion, garlic, chilli and spring onion. A fail-safe dish.

This is a bad review that comes with warnings about the really bad racist service. It's really unfortunate for a place with potential. Attitude kills restaurants. With only 57 votes on Urbanspoon and only 77% likes, this place is still over-rated. Serving up Cantonese cuisine that has the potential to be quite good, it fails to differentiate itself from other similar restaurants close by in a positive manner. For me, it differentiates itself rather negatively. The Place Conveniently located on Russell Street in the city, this is an easily accessible restaurant by public transport. You can see the whole restaurant from the street level - a basic set up with roundtables with pristine table cloth. There's not a lot of ambience though it is a pleasant enough place for a meal. Things to do nearby: Set right in the middle of town, there's plenty to do around. The Food Serving the usual fare of Cantonese Cuisine - their food is ok thought nothing out of

Good food, good service, ruin by one rude service man. I had dinner with my other 8 friends in this restaurant, and we order 9 dishes, from chicken, prawn, abalone, oyster, etc. All of us agree that we love the food, it was tasty and presentable. Our table was served by one middle age lady, she is very nice, very helpful and initiative.
Until we ask for the bill to a middle age man with chubby featured and wearing glasses, our bill total is $227.40, and we gave him $240. We were waiting for the change of $12.60, but that guy has been passing by our table few times but he never bring back the change. So, on the way out, we ask to him politely, how much we actually gave him, and he said 240. When we ask politely again, to have the change back, he is starting to confront us with judging tone. He questioning me on why I gave him extra if it doesn't meant for tips. I answer him with what I believe is very makes sense answer, that we don't have exact money of $227.40, and usually what will happen in any other normal restaurant is, we still get the change, and if we mean to leave some tips, we will leave it on the table. But, he seems dont understand it, and still insist with his point of thinking. So, next time, if i spend $227.40 and gave him three notes of $100 dollar, is the change of $72.60 will be taken as your tips????????
10 minutes of argument, still can't make that man understand, instead he keep asking me " do you understand or not???" few times, again in a high tone and very mad expression.
To be honest, at the beginning, if he said sorry, and admit it as mistaken, we will just leave without asking our change.
$12.60 is nothing for our table, for that nice food and nice lady server, we will definitely put some tipping. But, is that how you ask your tips????
We end up spent that $12.60 to bought some nice hot bun at Nam loong bun shop. poor our lady server, we are too annoyed with that man.

And please do check on internet, if tipping in australia is mandatory? is it necessary??? yes tipping is expected by service person, and much appreciated, but still, forced way to tipping like that is super rude and totally not accepted. even USA as tipping country won't accept this way of tipping.

This review is wrote by a person who has background in hospitality and F&B industries, and has been work in restaurant industry too. so, I know what I am saying.

No 1 cheap eats Chinese Food for me!. This is my absolute go to no 1 for a cheap and quick Chinese feed , way better than any similar offering in Chinatown - located just before the corner of Russell and Lonsdale and is perfect for a quick after work bite - Classic old school set up - they use school room like furniture and write your order and invoice in Chinese - I could never challenge the bill because I cant read it , but a very inexpensive place with great food served super quick! The dumplings and pork rolls are a must too! It does tend to get rather busy at post work hour.

Average. Nothing much to say as it is pretty cheap but the food is nothing that special. but i will come back!

So average. Had to wait forever for our dumplings, then they came out and there were only 2.5 dumplings in the basket! the waiter/manager noticed before we did and took it back without giving us a chance (we would have just kept them bc we were starving!). waiter was borderline rude. then we had to wait AGAIN. dumplings round 2 came out and 2 were still raw!

hopeless

Bob. Walked into this place accidentally last week and what a pleasant surprise. Very fresh seafood in plentiful quantity. Had the best crispy pepper fish [flounder] i've had in a long time, enough for two. Price was low enough that I cant remember what it was. Senior waiters are experts. How long since any restaurant de backboned your fish at the table?. Only been once but we loved it

Good place for congee supper. Went for a supper with my friends which was a delighted experience. Ordered a fresh and juicy steamed fish, crispy and tasty deep fried port intestine & barramundi congee. Honestly I didn't expect such a good food they could provide. One of the young waiter gave us a lovely smile and helpful service all the time. I love this place! Tumb up!

Used to be good. A year ago this place would be on my favourite list, but now is going downhill, food portion is tiny

It's just ok, that's about it, and the bathrooms are crap, typical.

Best Szechuan prawns. Hurrah, one of my favourite restaurants has been added to urbanspoon. I have lost count of the number times I have been here, have taken many friends here and they have all loved it. I'm usually the only caucasian there, which is often a sign of a great authentic Chinese restaurant. Stand out dishes: the shredded duck soup, and the szechuan prawns. Be careful of the little chillis hiding under the prawns - do not accidentally eat as I have done. They have a separate menu which is usually not offered but if you ask nicely they will give it to you. Live seafood in the tanks which I have never tried but if you want really fresh fish, crab etc this would the place to have it.

This one is not to be confused with the other Nam Loong which is further down Russell Street.
