Great cafe near in the CBD
A lovely cafe outside the State Library, Mr Tulk serves up fabulous coffee in a convenient location. With the recent nice weather, it was great to sit outside and enjoy the sunshine. There are an abundance of outdoor tables and the area is clean and tidy, with a cosmopolitan feel.
There is also a large space inside, and an interesting food menu. On our last visit, we just had some fabulous coffees that were of excellent quality. The barista was lovely, and we received our coffee promptly. Mr Tulk is definitely a great spot to sit outside and take a breather from the rush of the city.
Found this place as I needed a place to continue working from the State Library which closes at 6pm on Fridays. This place closes at 7 on Fridays and offers $5 wine during happy hour 4-6pm (made it 5min before 6pm!). Friendly staff, nice ambience and decent house pours!
Group of us came in for Saturday morning brunch. Good menu with with some great specials. Porridge was creamy with nice pieces of juicy berries & rhubarb.
Coffee was decent.
With a name that pays homage to Augustus Henry Tulk the State Library's first Chief Librarian, Mr Tulk is an iconic Melbourne café that is housed in what was formerly the State Library's locker room.
Today it is a spacious contemporary dining hall with a design that appropriately plays on the Reading Room theme. The indoors boast a central communal table with mounted lights, inviting study and laptops or catch-ups over coffee - whilst the high ceilings, wooden tables and arched windows rightly contribute to the antiquarian feel of the locker room-turned-cafe.
The café serves quality breakfast and lunch 7 days a week, with happy hour on Fridays for after-work drinks.
Great coffee and sweet treats! Hard to resist on my way to work. Their cookies and muffins are amazing, and they switch up the flavours. The only thing is that they are quite pricy and a bit touristy.
The menu is classic - simple things done well. Recommended.
Love this place so much, the atmosphere is always lovely and the staff and owner are such lovley people. Thanks for the consistently yummy soy mochas :)
Great feel to the place, and the staff are usually very friendly, however it is a little hit-and-miss. The decor is fantastic and blends well with the theme of the library. The coffee here is great, and is definitely not a bad option if you need a quick caffeine fix after spending some time at the library. The food is good, but is nothing innovative and doesn't really compete with some of the other places in the city, but it is tasty and will fill you up.
Love this place, favourite cafe in Melbourne. Friendly staff, interesting surroundings, sophisticated and relaxed crowd and environment. Very popular at peak times (Sundays, Saturdays etc) but a great little spot!
One of my fave latte so far! Tried the soy latte and it was really good. Service was also good and quick. Cant give it a higher rating since i didnt try any food, but will definitely return to do so!
Have wanted to go here for a while, and sit outside, and can very highly recommend a visit.
Staff were very friendly, and though busy, were efficient, and nothing was to much trouble.
The food was plentiful and delicious, ordered the Baked Beans as extra, would love the recipe!
Will absolutely be returning for another coffee, and a seat outside-can’t recommend highly enough.
Had breakfast quite early in the morning soon after they had opened. Service was relatively swift and friendly although a little wait for coffee and food. Coffee was good. Atmosphere inside lovely - beautiful sitting areas we chose the comfy booth. A lovely little spot nice and central. Some people working on laptops so would be a nice study spot.
Lovely cafe with good amount of space. I’ve had smoothies here before and quite enjoyed them. Pictured is a really yummy chicken coleslaw salad with a tangy, bright sweet/savoury dressing and crunchy topping. Recommend trying this out for lunch!
Great service, lovely venue, broad and flexible menu. Had a tuna salad (delicious), fried eggs and chips (nice and crunchy). Would highly recommend and will definitely come again. Also great coffee
Shlepped around for a bit looking for a dog friendly spot, was able to eat outside with our pup. Quick service and tasty food. We both got fresh squeezed juices also which were deelish. Definitely will head back here on a lazy weekend for brunch.
Thank God for Michael! He was a lifesaver allowing us to have Mr Tulk as a wet weather back up venue for our wedding. Fortunately the weather was beautiful so we didn’t need to use the space. However Michael was also generous to stay open for our guests between ceremony and reception and allowed us to take beautiful photos in the space after hours. We’re so grateful for your kindness. Mr Tulk will always be a special place for us!
