reason I want to go to PappaRich is their Kaya Bun- sad that it’s always unavailable. The lady staff can probably be more friendlier- but their food is still good.
Points for: tasty Malaysian dishes
Dine Time: Weekend lunch
Managed to get in before the waiting line started.
I always like the roti here, cos it's fresh - you can see the guy slapping it onto the table, and straight onto the grill, then scrunched up slightly to give it more texture.
The chicken rice is also pretty decent, nice pieces of boneless chicken, fragrant rice cooked in chicken fat and ginger, served with bean sprouts and soup. Ideally I'd like to have the spring onion sauce on the side in addition to ketchup manis and garlic chilli. The side soup was nicely seasoned but could have been hotter.
The laksa is rich, thick and midly spicy - you get a lot of coconut coming through. The egg noodles are thick and chewy, but doesn't come with a mix of rice vermicelli. All the toppings seem to be deep fried, making it a little oily, but the eggplant is nice and creamy.
If you haven't tried it, have the Assam Laksa - one of the few Malaysian restaurants that will do it. It's unlike a curry laksa, it's a fish based stock - sour, spicy, fragrant, with thicker rice noodles. Add in the shrimp paste for an extra fragrant kick, and with the mint and cucumber, just brings everything together.
Not sure why PappaRich gets a lot of mixed reviews. They do a lot of classic dishes pretty decently, I guess it's up to your expectation on value and service.
I always love coming here to get my dose of Malaysian cuisine. My favorite go to dish is the hainanese chicken rice. The rice and chicken were well done and flavorful and their kopi is really reminiscent of home. Although they are really crowded during peak times, I would love to come back here again some time.
