I was feeling slightly under the weather so I was in the mood for some pho. Luckily Ba Ba delivered and I was soon tucked up with a steaming bowl of Vietnamese chicken noodle soup. Lots of tender, juicy chicken, great broth with soft noodles.
Pretty good Bahn Mi. Pork was juicy with lots of flavour and despite there being a line it was prepared pretty quickly! They used mayonnaise instead of Pate and Butter which was a little strange. At $7 its on the expensive side for a Bahn Mi.
The Vietnamese sweet and sour soup is so tasty! I get it almost every time I come to the market for lunch and it has been amazing every time.
This is a good option for lunch if you are visiting South Melbourne Markets. The Vietnamese curry laksa was fresh and tasty with generous amounts of meat and vegetables - although a little lacking in heat and a bit sweet.
Have been wanting to try something from this store since the day I was hit by the fragrance of pho coming from here!
Tried the Vietnamese salad with Kaffir lime grilled chicken ( with some extra chilli) . It was so so so yum!
For $10 you get much more than what you've paid for. The flavours are amazing and have kept me wanting for more. Will definitely be back!
I dont think I have eaten anywhere else during every visit to South Melb market. This pace has one of the best Viet salad and Bahn Mi
Fast,Healthy, & DELICIOUS
If ever on the area, give this a go.
Also zomato there is nothing indian about Ba Ba Rolls. Should probably be taken off the tag
One of my go to’s when frequenting the South Melbourne market is Ba Ba Roll, the sole vietnamese vendor in the food court. It’s a serious affair with banh mi’s en masse on one side with meals on the other. Like much of the market it’s a pretty price savvy experience and the food doesn’t disappoint either.
I always have the tofu banh mi and it's great every time! Lots of salad filling and the right amount of sauce and heat from the chilli. A must every time I'm around South Melbourne for lunch. Very nice ladies behind the counter too!
Had a bbq pork roll for lunch today. The pork was so delicious and tender, I just wish there was a little more of it. I took out the giant stem of spring onion, but it was a nice decoration. I accidentally agreed to chilli in the roll, which hit my by surprise and all at once. Luckily for me it was clumped only in the middle, but I'm sure for those who wanted chilli this would be disappointing.
Fast, friendly service, overall a pretty good lunch. I like the new place, they've moved next door I believe, and utilise the street window for ordering. Will be back!
April 2017:
Baba roll has undergone renovations and today I went to get some chicken wings. They were on the baine Marie and I waited and waited and didn't understand why they haven't given it to me yet after I paid. I think they must have re-deep fried it for me so it was hot. The chicken wings were plump and still maintained its juiciness after it has been deep fried twice (or maybe they fried it fresh for me?!). Either way it tasted amazing and for $1 each they are sure as hell the best value for money wings I have had for a long time.
Jul 2015:
When you wake up at an ungodly hour of the morning to go to South Melbourne Market, you always want something cheap and yummy to fill yourself up before fighting the crowds for the freshest seafood/meat/ veggies on market day.
Checking out a number of cafés and stalls in South melbourne Market, I concluded that Baba has the best value in terms of bang for buck with their banh mi. Cafés a few stalls down will serve a small roll for $7.90 whereas at Baba, for $6 you get a Vietnamese bread roll stuffed with salads, chicken/pork/ meatballs/ tofu. It's just so easy to grab and go, biting a huge chunk of freshly baked bread, sending flakes of bread all over yourself whilst negotiating your trolley between the aisles for best buys.
So it's not the best banh mi in the whole wide world, but it's good, cheap eats on the run for sure.
