Coals to Newcastle, ice cream to Australia. I found out as a result of visiting this New Zealand Natural that I've been ordering milkshakes all wrong in Australia. In North America, a milkshake is a thick, ice cream-based concoction with just enough milk so that it will flow through a straw. In Australia, a milkshake is MILK, with some ice cream added for flavour. Those are not bad, but they're not what I'm accustomed to. At En Zed Natural, punters can pick from milkshakes -- the Aussie kind -- or something called "thick shakes" which are like what gets served Up Over. The thick ones have a lot more ice cream, and a higher price: $7.50 vs $5.50 for a milkshake.
I decided to treat myself to the expensive, high-kilojoule one because I was celebrating finally getting rid of all the moving boxes that had carried my household goods from Canada. (Gave 'em away via Gumtree, so they're recycled, not just binned. Now I have more room in my flat!) The caramel/chocolate chunk shake was tasty, and the ice cream was somewhat higher quality than standard fare like Peter's. My choice wasn't the best for a shake, though, because the caramel bits got chopped into mushy blebs in the machine, and the chocolate pieces percolated down to the bottom of the cup.
I'll have to try New Zealand Natural's ice cream in cones to see how it compares to Aussie gelato. I feel a bit guilty about it, though, because all this ice cream comes across the Tasman from Kiwiland. How many food miles are involved with that, especially when you consider the energy costs involved in keeping it frozen. But it's not nearly as much energy as I squandered immigrating across the Pacific from Canada, eh?
