Review Han Guuk Guan - Melbourne

Jasmine Nguyen
ORDERED: NOODLES 🍜 16. Noodles with Seafood in Thick Black Bean Sauce ($23.00) SOUP 🥘 43. Spicy kimchi & pork with soft bean curd stew with steamed rice ($18.00) CHICKEN 🍗 52. Fried Boneless Chicken, medium with Soy Garlic ($20.00) REVIEW: Han Guuk Guan is a cosy restaurant, which screams authentic Korean food. The menu is primarily labelled in Korean, with the descriptions the only part that's English. Photos of IU and her soju sponsorship on the wall by the stairwell, and conversations in Korean happening all around you by the patrons. Han Guuk Guan isn't trying to impress you, it's just trying to feed you a good meal. Food is homely, and good quality. For less than a $25pp feed between 3 people, we left pretty full. I typically don't like black bean noodles, but I didn't mind HGG's rendition of it. Likewise for the boneless chicken, which I found crunchy, crispy, and finger-licking good. The stew was quickly demolished, along with the bowl of rice.

Hidden inside the alleyway and this korean restaurant was truly a hidden gem in city! Food was very delicious, tasted so authentic!

Surprisingly good. Cute hidden away place. Try the black bean noodles and the seer and sour pork. HUGE servings.
Janry Won
Hidden Korean Chinese style food. Great dishes include jjampong spicy seafood noodles. Jajamyung black bean noodles and fried chicken.

Fantastic Korean restaurant. Some different and interesting dishes. Hard to find but worth the visit. Will be back again.

Have heard about this place from a few reliable sources so decided to try it for lunch today. So glad we did. Great food, awesome service, spotlessly clean, generous servings, reasonable prices. To top it off, the location of this place is like a sanctuary in the middle of the city. Looking forward to trying their other dishes.

Pretty good jajajangmeon and decent fried chicken.

Best Korean Chinese Restaurant ever!! Very delicious food and friendly service. The fresh seafood JJAMPONG and Premium Pork Sirloin TANGSUYOOK, GANJJAJANG is so yummy. Prawn KKANSHOSAEWOO is my favourite. Wow!! Our year end special dinner was so great. Thank you.

Insta: melbfoodie_mark
YT: MelbFoodieMark
-
A hidden Korean-Chinese eatery near the city. It looks very suspicious from outside but spacious and cozy inside :) Known to have the most authentic Jajangmyeon (korean style black bean noodle)! Khan-Jajang ☆☆☆☆
Most non-Koreans get Jajangmyeon but I highly recommend Khan-Jajang. It's similiar to Jajangmyeon but with more veggies/meat/egg. It is more rich, creamy, and flavourful! A huge portion - almost enough for two people.Trust me, instead of getting other dishes, stick to Jajangs and Jampongs here. (PS. Highly recommend Korean-style Sweet and Sour Pork as a side!)

hidden in a little passageway nearby carlton gardens, i knew i had to try han guuk guan sometime! i've never had jjajangmyeon before and didn't really know what to expect but for $14 oh my god the portion was huge. i struggled to finish it by myself and felt a bit sick at the end as i feel as though the overall taste was quite one dimensional. it has a strong salty, black bean taste but then is also quite sweet. i think there needs to be some heat or acidity added to make it more balanced.

i was given 3 side dishes as well which was really generous! the first one was some thick jelly noodles with a bit of spicy sauce and spring onion, served cold. then some kimchi and overly sweet candied potatoes and onions. suuuuper worth it for the price and felt like i was in korea! seems family owned and just had a wholesome vibe. defs will come back sometime - also accepts sosure!

A well hidden gem!
Went here with my cousin as the cravings kicked in from the last time I had these two dishes at another restaurant. She recommended this restaurant and I’ve also heard about this place from a few friends of mine.

we ordered the jajangmyeon and tangsuyuk.

Pro: HUGE portions, like when they brought out the food especially the tangsuyuk I was so shocked! It was so big that between the two of us we struggled to finish it. Although I was starving after working that day too, I couldn’t finish it. I think we overestimated ourselves. I really liked the tangsuyuk and it’s sauce.

Cons; the jajangmyeon noodles were different. The usual noodles is a little more on the thicker end but it was very thin noodles. I was confused because shouldn’t this dish usually have a side of pickled radish?? They compliment each other and balances out flavour

Service: staff were helpful and welcoming. They were busy the time we came in and was lucky to have a table available for us because I was honestly starving. The food wait wasn’t too long so by the time it arrived to the table I was ready to get stuck in!!
Sue Jung
First of all the noodles arent the right ones you should use for these dishes. The jjajangmyeon is too sweet ad watery - no actual ‘jjajang’ taste. The jjamppong was watery too and did not taste nice. The tangsooyuk was burnt and overcooked. Sweet and sour sauce was only sweet no element of sour and fruitiness. Had high hopes and was extremely disappointed.

There were 5 of us catching up for dinner and we decided to go to Han Guuk Guan just for old times sakes for Korean meal.

Han Guuk Guan has been around for ages, over 12 years. It's one of those Korean restaurants that has become an institution (just like Dae Jang Geum in Chinatown), a home place for those locals that want a place that can go back and reminiscence as back in the days it used to be the "it" place for well known Jjajeongmeon (Korean black bean noodles).

My last visit was in 2016, over 3 years ago and looking at the menu, there has only been about a $1 to $3 price increase on some of the items.

🔆LOCATION🔆

Han Guuk Guan is situated on Victoria Street near the corner of Exhibition street. The restaurant is a standalone brick establishment located between two large buildings away from the main street. You need to walk into a small alley way. Look for a light blue painted brick building.

As you walk inside, the restaurant is dark, yet warm and has a homely feel to it. The walls, tables are of dark brown wood. There are quite alot of seats, most are booth style type seating.

🔆SERVICE🔆

Service is average, not the best but at least they employ Korean staff.

🔆MENU/PRICE🔆

Guun Maan Du – Fried Dumplings, $8.00
(Deep fried Korean dumplings, 8 pieces)

Jaa Jung Meon – Traditional Chinese Black Bean Noodles, $12.00
(chopped onions, zucchini and potato, black bean paste, pork mince, poured over fresh homemade noodles)

Tung Su Yuuk – Sweet and Sour Pork, $32.00
(battered strips of pork deep fried and covered in a white sweet and sour vinegar sauce with assorted vegetables)

Ghal Be Tung – Traditional Korean Beef Rib Broth, $15.00
(beef spare ribs served with hot beef broth with chopped spring onions, served with bowl of steamed rice)

BBQ Meats ( special 3 meats for $35)
Ou Soul – Sliced Ox Tongue, $17.00
Duak Bul Gau Ghi, Traditional Korean Marinated Chicken, $17.00
Saam Ghuyob Saal, Thin sliced Pork Belly, $17.00
Sau Gau Ghu Ju Mul Lok, Thin sliced Beef, $17.00

🔆VERDICT🔆
The food is okay, it's not fantastic but it's not exactly bad. Just above average Korean food.

The Fried dumplings were made very well, thin pastry with nice flavoured filling and lightly deep fried. We polished them up fast!

Their famous JJangjeongmeon - Black bean noodles still tastes as good as last time I visited which is good however plate presentation was poor, there were slashes of sauce on side of the plate.

Best dish to eat with the black bean noodles is their sweet & sour pork. The pork was tender and juicy and the sauce was good combination of sweet and sour, it was a good dish but at $32 a plate, its a bit pricey but having said that the serving is decent.

The Beef rib broth was just okay. It was literally just beef ribs and soup. Was kinda bland but loaded with white pepper so was pretty peppery.

We also ordered some BBQ meats. They provided us with a flat hot plate but placed a baking paper sheet on top which was interesting. I think it is to avoid the meat sticking to the hot plate. It still did the job fine with bbq-ing the meats. We had a BBQ promotion special where you can pick 3 meats for $35, and we ordered an extra plate of meat. The meat portions were quite small and it was just average tasting with all of them.

Last time I was here was about 3 years ago, we decided to come back because we were craving their chinese black bean noodles and sweet spicy fried chicken. However it was a disappointment, the chicken didn’t taste fresh and was very tough to eat. There was too much batter. I remember the kimchi soup being so tasty that we had to order two of them, this time it just lacked that kimchi taste and there wasn’t much pork meat. Other than that, my favourite was their potato side dishes, that was delicious.

i love this place. it’s a homey, hidden gem with very authentic korean food. the customer service is amazing and the atmosphere and vibes are exceptional.
AN
Ordered the seafood jajangmyeon and tang su yuk (sweet and sour pork) and felt awfully sick afterwards. Ingredients did not taste fresh whatsoever. the noodles barely had any seafood but 1-2 tiny pieces of octopus and the tang su yuk sauce tasted like apple jam and the pork was dry. Service was good if that was the only positive remark.. but the food was expensive and taste was such a let down.

Have come here a few times. A bit hit and miss but come here every year for nostalgic reasons. This korean-chinese joint is a homey looking restaurant tucked away in the corner of the CBD.

We had the cheese bul dak which was pretty good. The mozzarella was super soft and cheesy and the chicken pieces were decent and very tender. We also had the beef brisket soup with glass noodles - very clear soup that was nice on a rainy day.
CSL
Was introduced by my best friend to go this Korean-Chinese Restauarant. The portion is large with the affordable price, overall food is good! Will be back for next time!
JOELLE
A hidden chinese-korean eatery near the CBD.

Been here a few times. The place is quite spacious, and it's more like a home than a restaurant. Really cosy atmosphere, and on a weekday lunch time there was almost no one, all we could hear was the kitchen noise. Staff was friendly and food came out reasonably fast. I also like that they have a bell on the table (i wish all restaurants have this).

Jjajangmyeon was pretty good. Compared to the one at Korchi city, the sauce is less strong which was a letdown but still overall it was a great combo of sweet and savory. I really like the texture of the noodle though, more than Kochi's. It was very smooth but was nicely chewy.

The yukgaejang was also yum. Nice portion, good amount of meat, with sweet potato noodle and some veg. I like the amount of spice and the overall taste of the soup. Definitely one of the top yuk gae jangs I've had. This comes with rice and for $9.5 this was a steal (lunch menu).

Fried dumpling was decent. It was nicely fried, taste was decent, good portion and served with dipping sauce which was pretty yum.

Had their galbitang which was really warm and portion was satisfying, with good flavors and tender beef.

Side dishes includes kimchi, braised potatoes and carrots, pickled onions to konyaku jelly.

( follow for more!✨)

xx,joelle.

Truly a hidden gem. Got recommended to Han Guuk Guan by some friends who have been coming to this place for sometime now.

Portions are huge, so worth ordering a few dishes to share. Delicious and authentic Korean.
Makan2Melbourne
A hidden gem! Love their jjangmyeon, the black bean sauce was really delicious, it was the best one I’ve tried. The tang suu yuk was another favourite. It wasn’t crispy, but it was perfect with the sauce. The sauce can be a bit too sour sometimes, but if you add a little bit of the black bean sauce, it tastes much better! The cheese buldak was just ok, but wasn’t bad, and the portion wan’t as big as the other ones. The jjangmyeon and tang suu yuk have definitely become my comfort food.
Shing Ying Low
Solid 4 stars. Off the beaten track, a little difficult to find. Good Korean-Chinese food with big portions and the prices reflect that. Portion size would feed 2 not so hungry people or 1 very hungry person. A good dish would be the sweet and sour pork and the jajangmyeon.
GrATEful
Ate here so many times, it has always been great so i brought my sister here to try. It was so disappointing that when i brought someone, the noodle was overcooked and bland. Out of the countless times ive been here, that was the worst.
Oodreiilittlepotato
Had jajangmyeon for lunch! Been carving it for weeks~ $14 for this big portion. Was okay tho.... a bit tastless and not much meat as well. I’ll came back for the other dish, the other dish! Yes 3.5/5 :)
PNH
Came here from Perth hearing great reviews from two friends. I'm so glad we decided to check it out, the black bean noodles are so delicious. We ordered the sweet and sour pork and fried rice to go with it. It was enough food for three people but I'm regretting not having ordered a second bowl to take on the plane with me!

Jajangmyeon - MUST ORDER
The best jajangmyeon I have ever eaten!!
Sweet chilli chicken is nice and crispy

Good korean but abit expensive compared to other korean restaurant
Christinana
Went here on dinner time. The black bean noodle is full of flavour and delicious. For the sweet sour pork it was crispy and tender. It’s quite big portion so better share with minimum 3 ppl. For the ginseng chicken soup, it’s quite watery and lacking of flavour.Overall, service is ok , food is ok. The only downside was a bit overpriced.

Have dined here before in the past as they're the only restaurant I know of that does jajangmyeon and I do really enjoy their variation of the dish they make here (I'm not sure if it's the "authentic style" hence my choice of words).
Ordered a serve of jajangmyeon, their version of sweet and sour pork, kimchi jjigae and fried korean dumplings. The sweet and sour pork was a huge serving, something that we completely forgot about since we usually order takeaway. To see the plate in its entirety had us in awe. The dish was good, but definitely of a different standard to your typical Chinese version. The gravy did get a little sickening at the end and we had to takeaway. The noodles were delicious as always, kimchi jigae was standard, and having rice with it definitely helped us along. Fried dumplings took an interesting shape but was also delicious; the accompanying sauce also gave a good tang.
I feel that it is a little bit of a shame that this establishment is very well hidden and you can definitely walk past it without seeing it. I get the feeling that they are trying to grow their profits as they have half priced kbbq on Mondays; maybe next time for me.
C.
Don’t come here guys! I literally thought they gave me the wrong order - I could hardly find any seafood in my $17 “seafood stew”.. the soup was so watery and none of the ingredients were fresh. Probably the worst korean food I’ve had in Melbourne 👎🏼
Silllyadventures
I never write review but this was just horrendous.
I ordered a chicken bibimbap - the restaurant was empty and there was one student looking 'cook' in the kitchen.
throughout the whole ten mins (which was the amount of time it took to prepare my meal) i did not hear any cooking sounds. All i heard was the opening and closing of the microwave door.
The meal came with a half-eaten container of pickled onions. I saw the waiter while packing my order take the half eaten container of pickled onions from the fridge, looked at it, made a face and put it back. He looked for somethng else, couldnt find anything else so took that half-eaten container of pickled onions with my order.

This microwave meal of 3 dry chicken pieces, zuchini slices, bean sprouts and lettuce cost me $15.

Korean barbeque is always a popular choice either for family or casual dinner with friends. Well han guuk guan is not different than any others. Nonetheless, they do have their own speciality :)

Let’s go straight down to the review guys !!!

Panda 🐼🐼🐼
First thing i notice is this place is spacious and you are allowed to join a few table.

The air inside is not steamy and smokey unlike other korean bbq restaurant

Most of the waiters are friendly

Down to the food :
- jajangmyeon is the highlight of the day
- i recommend to get the fried pork as well its really tender and crispy (dont forget to ask for the ketchup)

Reasonable price AND THEY HAVE DISCOUNT HALF PRICE FOR BBQ EVERY MONDAY

They have chinese menu as well which is very surprising and convenient

Decent bbq taste and quality

Well marinated beef

Pandon’t ❌❌❌:

Japchae was too mild

Staff was unattentive
Hungrygypo
Ordered the kimchi stew, beef jajangmyeon and chicken buldak. The kimchi stew was nice and spicy. The noodles were ok not great and the beef pieces were so gross, hard and fatty i had to spit them out. The chicken was ok but wasnt spicy at all like it should be. Overall prob wouldnt go back but the service was good and friendly.
Olivia Yang
The worst Korean cuisine I ever had, though the waitress is nice. The Jaa jung meon is very awful, and the hot spicy beef in the soup is not fresh at all.
Châu Pha
One of the best Korean & Chinese cuisine in Melbourne, this restaurant had been running for more than 10 years & the noodle is handmade (heard from Korean friend). Recommend for lunch sharing with friends.
Ferry Gondo
Used to visit here to enjoy its amazing Jjangmeon, Korean noodles with black bean sauce. Rich, creamy and tasty. Noodle was nice. Also like the Korean sweet chili chicken.

Points for: legit Chinese style Korean

Besides the common bbq, stews, pancakes, fried chicken, etc, Chinese style Korean food is also a staple among Koreans, and you’ll see them light up with delight at the thought of jajangmyun blackbean noodles, or tang suyuk sweet & sour pork.

Fortunately Han Guuk Guan (Korea House) is one of the best options in the city for this style of cuisine.

Bit of a secret hideout, but once you step in, it’s like you’re transported back to a casual restaurant in Korea – menu on the wall, posters of
celebrities spruiking soju & beer, large wooden tables with the call button, etc.

So many options on the menu, and I like the option of going half-half if you can’t make up your mind. It’s a little bit pricier but you get the variety, and the servings are pretty large.

The jajangmyun noodles have a nice chew, and the sauce has a deep flavour that’s not too salty. The jjambong seafood stew is also quite good, with a spicy and flavourful seafoody soup.

I’ve never been a fan of sweet and sour of any variety really – typically deep fried battered bits of old dry meat covered in sticky sweet and sour sauce, not just here but everywhere I go.
Foodislife
Awesome cuisine. Just need some more staff and maybe more work in advertising their business! Not much people know about this Korean restaurant.
Leroy Jenkins
Good for large groups! Large dining area upstairs means you can generally just rock up without a booking. They are well known for their Chinese Korean dishes like black bean noodles and sweet and sour pork!
Mistletoe
Disappointment is an understatement to the meal we’ve had at this establishment. Service was none existent, bordering on rude and nonchalant. Food was sub par. Ordered the black bean noodle. This dish comes with freshly thinly sliced cucumbers, but no... not anymore. Because of.. cost? I don’t know, couldn’t understand the staff member. Oh, there were peas on top, but that’s not what the photos depict!

Fried chicken was too sweet and was more batter then chicken. Restaurant is dirty and dingy. The toilet? Omg. If I had gone in before the meal, I would’ve walked out and not turned back. If the toilet, which is fully accessible by customers isn’t taken care of, what do you think the kitchen looks like ?

Would never step foot in here again. If I could give a negative score, I would.

AVOID AT ALL COST.
Brekkycakes
Back before Korean food was popular, my family would drive all the way into the city just to get our Korean fix here at Han Guuk Guan. So it was rather nostalgic coming back here after so long and I was glad to find that the food was still good.

I ordered the jaam boung($15) which is a spicy seafood soup noodle. The servings were quite huge which justified the slightly higher price tags. I did find the soup was a bit bland and not as spicy as I was expecting. There was quite a lot of squid but would have been nice to have a variety such as prawns and more pipis/mussels. There was a slight smokey flavour from them frying up the ingredients beforehand in a wok which I enjoyed. My friend got the donkatsu and the serving of meat was generous. For sides(called banchan) we got kimchi, onions and potato. Overall, Jaam boung was alright but I have jeard that the Jia jang myeon is nicer here so will have to try that next time.

Service was pretty good and efficient, although their interior could use a touch up. However I kind of enjoy the frills free atmosphere of the place and will come back to try their other offerings next time.
Stephanie Djojoseputro
Generous portion! Love the black bean noodle and sweet sour pork. The staffs are pretty friendly. I wish they can improve their side dishes.
Baby Kitty
I only go here for their black bean noodles. For 12 dollars you will get a massive bowl of hearty noodles covered in black bean sauce. Definitely bang for buck. Fried chicken isn't so goood.
Juli A Lawono
Always went there back on uni time
And never been there since a lots of Korean restaurant open around the city.
Went there again, food still the same and they add up more of the variety, taste a bit different with back then

But why not to have the food that bring a lots of old memories ☺️
Liz
Best jajangmyeon in town!! And the noodle serving is huge. The spicy kimchi pork with tofu and seafood pancake is delicious too! Will definitely be back.
Jeremy K
Little hidden place on the edge of the CBD. Really solid Korean stir fry lunches for $9.90 and really great kimchi. I'm planning on trying it out for dinner for Korean BBQ because based on the lunch, I think it will deliver.

Just beware, they do one super annoying thing, which is that they won't bring out the (lower price) lunch menu unless you ask for it. So make sure to ask for the lunch menu if they don't give it to you!
Amanda Mach
Great atmosphere! Reminds me a lot of an actual restaurant in Korea, food is amazing, had the rice cake and dumpling soup ( great for a cold winters day!), spicy chicken and cheese (everything I thought it would be!) and finally had jajangmyeon and sweet and sour pork ( definitely tasted very authentic)
Overall, will definitely be my go-to Korean restaurant from now on!
Carina Dalton
Generous portions and like everyone says prob the best black bean noodle in VIC and NSW and some parts in Korea. The vege and seafood in the spicy noodle (jjam pong) were unfortunately not very fresh..and a bit too salty for my liking..The garlic chicken is pretty tasty but not as crispy as other places.
Alexes Tan
On Monday they 50% off some BBQ meats, such good money for value! Portions were very generous and the staff are very friendly. The sweet sour pork and black bean noodles combination is a must try!!
Joelle Leong
Food here is pretty decent. I wouldn't say it's GREAT or anything, but it is pretty good. The portion here is also really(like REALLY) big, so you can take some away and have it for your next meal too! Staff is helpful and friendly enough(they're also Korean; feels more authentic). I would come back again to try some of their other foods~
Cxndii
Very delicious and authentic Korean food. The portions were very generous, which makes it worth the price. Service was very friendly and quick. The old and simple setting of the restaurant really makes me feel like I'm in Korea at a good restaurant that is hidden in an alleyway.
Pierre Pie
1) Sweet and sour pork /black bean noodle -Taste good . And recommend black bean noodle . 2) Spicy beef and leek soup feel good can have a try ; 3) dok bauk ghi fish cake - taste good too , overall good . And services is good .
Debby
Theres not many korean restaurant that serve black bean noodle. This is one of them out of few in Melbourne. Love their black bean noodle. 👍
Portions are always big with reasonable price.
Meily So
Han Guuk Guan - the hidden Korean restaurant you should know about! Taste great and good service. My favourite is Tung Su Yuuk (sweet and sour pork). By the way, it's a good place to meet your friends for a satisfying dinner that's reasonably priced.
Catherine Widyaputri Suprapto
I'm not sure if I ordered the wrong food but these tasted like disappointment. The jjajangmyeon tasted very sweet, nothing else. It lacked of meat inside, i only got 2 small of them. The cold noodles were really weird, not to my liking. I don't recommend this place though.
Vivalaivy
nice restaurant which is on the edge of the cbd and carlton - their menu is extensive, they have everything from bbq to all other typical korean dishes. I have came here many times since my uni days until now. My favourite dish here is the black noodles, spicy chicken and soft tofu seafood stew. Servings here is nice and big which is very filling - so make sure you don't over order. Pricing is good for the portion served.
Melbourne Vegetarian
A hidden authentic Korean restaurant in the city.
Service is always good and ofcourse the food were good.
Personally love the Tofu kimchi soup, definitely a winner for this cold winter.
Love the side dishes too.
Will come back for more and more.
Chewynoms
Their Han Guk Jaa Jung (korean black bean noodles) are so far the best I've tried. The noodles felt handmade and is really delicious!
The Tung Su Yuuk (sweet and sour pork) portion is massive! At first I felt it was yummy and the flavour is well balanced, but towards the end I felt a bit sick eating it (not to blame the dish, we ordered too much food and need to finish it).
The rice cake with dumplings dish tastes average as I've tried better.
Service is really good and will definitely come back for the black bean noodles! 😊😊
Amanda
Had the spicy octopus in hot stone bowl, korean black bean noodles, and prawn fried rice. All three were pretty decent, though nothing really memorable that would make me come back again.
Jasmine Mei Zhang
Ok overall. Quiet and nice place. A bit expensive for it's quality of food material. We ordered pork BBQ (pork was frozen and not good ones).
The best jajang myeon and tang soo yuk I've ever had in Melbourne. There are few korean restaurants providing korean jajang myeon for customers and you won't regret for this restaurant.
Darwin Tantra, TwoPaperPen
It won't be the best place if you expect a good service.
Foods are great, they have famous for the battered and deep fried of chicken and pork; Khum pun ghi - Sweet and spicy chicken & Khum pun yuuk - Sweet and spicy pork.

Personally i love the black bean noodle - Han Guuk Jaa Jung compare to their famous deep fried food. The price is reasonable as it is a big portion.
CLABEL
The place was quite and not very attractive, but the food was really good! Ordered the kimchi pancake, jajangmyeon and tang su yuk for three people. The portion was big but we managed to finish it all hahaha! Everything was so delish! Great for sharing as well, this will be my fave korean place from now on!
Kathleen
This cute little restaurant is definitely a hidden gem! Their black bean noodles and spicy beef soup is amazing! Tastes like a homemade meal your mum makes. And their kimchi is probably the best I've had. The price is very affordable, make sure you come at lunch time where they have really good specials!
Chau Ly
Brilliant customer service with very friendly staff. As for what we ordered it was considerably cheap price. We shared between 2 adults and 1 child with a total bill of only $52 not to mention we still managed to takeaway one dish. Highly recommend Jajangmyeon with Sweet and Spicy Chicken; and Mul-Naengmyeon.
FOOD TRIP
Known for their Jaa Jung Noodles, or also known as Jia Jia Mian. Restaurant is super cute with lots of photos of menu options. Food is a bit overpriced and actually quite average. Complimentary Korean Sides: Braised potatoes. Sweet and super tender. 7.5/10. Complimentary Korean Sides: Spicy Radish

Incredibly good Korean/Chinese restaurant on the fringe of the CBD. The food always comes quickly and is both fresh and tasty. The Spicy Battered Chicken comes in huge servings and is super tasty, the Prawn Combination Fried Rice just divine. Dumplings are also very tasty. Recommended.

This place is awesome! Even though it's kinda dodgy looking, the taste is superb!! The jjajang myoen is definitely one of the favourites, and the dobokki is good
Juventia Wu
This restaurant used to be really packed years ago but it became quite now as more and more newer Korean restaurants opening up all over the CBD. I do visit every now and then, only for the most delicious jajangmyun (black bean noodles) as they have the best one in town.
Angel Putritama
Best jajjangmyeon in melbourne! We usually find the jajjang in other restaurant too watery but here they served it perfect! Not too watery not too thick! Very happy with the jajjang 😁
Charizard
Had their Jjajangmyeon (Black Bean Noodles) and Tangsuyuk (Sweet and Sour Pork). The jjajangmyeon was delicious as the noodles were chewy, with the flavoursome black bean sauce, and the generous portion of noodles. In contrast, the sweet and sour pork was substandard. I felt that there was more flour than pork in the tangsuyuk, as I barely tasted any meat, which was disappointing. Moreover, the service was slow even though the shop was empty.
Helenaconia
After thousand attempts seeking restaurant that sells jjajangmyeon (black bean noodle) which only sold at korean-chinese restaurant, finally I made a try in this hidden gem. The result is magnificent, best jjajangmyeon ever! With considerably cheap price, I totally will make this restaurant my regular. They offer half price kbbq every monday which make 6-9$ a beef or pork plate.
KT
Our original plan tonight was to visit Chin Chins, but even at 8pm on a Sunday night, it was packed! One of my friends then suggested a local Korean restaurant which was pretty much hidden in between two large office spaces. Unless you knew it was there, I don’t think you’d happen upon this restaurant. The dining area is quite small, and has very limited staff - only saw 2 staff members tonight. Both of them were friendly, but pretty much disappeared after taking your order and delivering the food.
A Chronicle Of Gastronomy
I thought the food was quite good. Altogether we paid about $15 each, including rice.
Alan Ng
I once again want to remind the reader that even with all the details outlined above, it was a very average fare, only the barest notch above seedier places along Chinatown. Nevertheless I will leave it up to the reader to determine their tastes in such places like this.

If you happened to be here on other days except Monday, try their Sweet & Spicy chicken it is to die for! Unfortunately if you happened to be here on Monday, this item is not on the Monday menu. But instead, you could have half priced BBQ!!! Been here too many times :)))) The marinated pork and marinated chicken. The portion is small i know. Half priced, what would you expect right? Eating war begins! Kimchi Hotpot. Just alright hmmm How to Go? 13 Victoria St Melbourne, VIC 3000 When to Go? Opening Times : n/a

Delicious between good and great. Love the deep fried chicken and the ginseng chicken soup. Generous portion and you will feel the love in their food.

Beef Bibimbab - hardly ANY beef!. It's been almost two years since I last visited this place - I used to love the food here. So being nostalgic, I brought my husband there tonight to have another meal. We ordered beef dol sot bibimbab and tofu dol sot bibimbab. Since my husband loves meat, he decided to get an additional dish of bbq ox tongue. Beef bibimbab turned out to be a disaster - there was hardly ANY beef! You might as well call it a vegetarian bibimbab with a sprinkle of shredded beef. The ox tongue dish was really average. I was quite disappointed with how bland the food tasted (given that I started going there five years ago because of its claim of authenticity), not to mention my annoyed husband who felt extremely ripped off for the quality of food (and the lack of meat of course). We will not be back.

Customer Service = Non-Existent. I know customer service is not a big deal in Asian restaurants, but this restaurant has by far the worst! I had to press the call bell at least 20 times to get the attention of a wait staff. Our BBQ dishes were getting cold while we waited for at least half an hour for our rice and side dishes to arrive. Please hire more wait staff!

The food was very standard. The Seafood Tofu Stew had hardly any seafood in it.

THE WORST MEMORABLE KOREAN RESTAURANT IN MELBOURNE IN MY WHOLE LIFE!

THe worst exprience ever i had and never want to order. Pretty dirty cutleries, dishes. The tangsuyuk sauce actually tastes similar to have in korean cuisine. I can tell it.
BUT the meat ( deep fried pork) is more important than the sauce i guess.
It has to supposed to be CRISPY N TENDER. Not like hard texture when it bites. Bery bad rude manners (staffs is quite polite and good . I mean owner) they complains alot back in the kitchen and make alot angry voice noisy from the kitchen. I could understand when they talk. If customer ask them to get something like side dishes or plastic bags the owner a old man sounds like complaining alot back in kitchen. Very bad attitude the owner treats their employee so bad. The reason why i am not impressed here was owner (chef) isnt willing to apologize when they made their mistakes they just busy to make rediculous excuses make my feel worse. Feeling so miserable after have been here. Wont go back

Love the sweet and sour chicken, fish roe tofu stew and japchae. Jajangmeun was bad

The hotpot is delicious! but the service is kinda bad. the staffs always hide in the kitcen and not attentive.

Ordered the jiajangmyun, was a large portion size and tasty, but it gets sickening after a few bites. Boyfriend got the beef bibimbap and it was great besides the small amounts of beef in the dish.
Prices for mains were cheap and affordable and staff were friendly! :)

Monday's half price !. So I went today with my friends for the special "Monday's half price" deal at Han Guuk Guan.

I have to say the service was TERRIBLE! We had to wait for like 40 mins to get the waiters attention to even order food! and they served a table that arrived 15 mins after us first before taking our order... thats not right.
At some points in time, there were no waiters on the 2nd floor at all, so we couldn't get more side dishes, water or order more food until a waiter decided to come up..

Food wise, it was alright. We had BBQ bulgogi, pork/chicken and ox tongue. We also ordered the fried dumpling - those were bad! It barely had any stuffing in it and it was cooked until the skin was all burnt, pretty tasteless as well but the BBQ was alright.

Would I go back? Hmm, yes I think I will. For the price I paid for it, yes I will go back but if it was full (normal) price, honestly speaking I dont think I would go back as the food quality was not THAT great

Pale shade of how it used to be. Have been a regular customer since 2006, but standards have been slipping over the last couple of years. Food quality can vary from excellent on one visit to horrible the next. Food portions are not standardised and also vary with each visit.

Staff also seem to be operating on a revolving door basis and appear to be Korean nationals on working holidays. I have no problem with this but makes for very inconsistent service standards. Have had excellent wait staff time to time but is otherwise decent or sub-par at times.

A shame really, as the Jajangmyeon was one of the best in Melbourne for a long period of time, and portions are generous (albeit variable from table to table).

Really hope they can recover some of the standards that they have allowed to drop.

Poor service. Reasonable food and price but extremely poor service. It's hard to gain their attention for refills and they often forget to serve some side dishes. Also, they assume you're tipping and don't give you your change. Won't be going back.

This restaurant got worse over the past few years. Few years back, jajangmyun, jjambbong and tangsuyuk were all pretty decent (coming from a korean), but nowadays they taste a lot worse. Maybe the owner got complacent. The noodles are soggy, tangsuyuk has too much batter and has barely any meat inside. Was very disappointed at my last visit. Wouldnt go back.

Ordered three beef dishes, they arrived without beef. when asked to rectify it, they provided cold beef.
wasnt a great experience.

Bad Service, Dirty Dishes. Smelly cutleries, old dry steamed rice, rude service. Not going back ever.

Tonight We had the traditional black bean noodles, Kim chi stew and beef ribs and every dish we had tasted great plus great friendly service.
Savindi Wijeratne
Service was pretty poor - we proffered beers with our meal bit never arrived. Asked for a refill of water which never arrived and got asked to leave at 10 because it was closing time.
Food seemed a lithe more expensive than places such as wu ga but still tasted good.

Worst service I've ever experienced. The meat was not fresh. When i ordered more side dishes they said no more but keep serving to others and told me because I nearly finish my meal. Thats ridiculous!

Worst restaurant experience ever. Like one of the other reviewers i signed up to urban spoon just to write this review.
we went for dinner on monday for 1/2 price korean bbq. i saw some bad reviews for this restaurant on urban spoon but thought i would give it a go anyway. I'm not a picky eater. BUT it was a huge mistake. the worse restaurant experience ever. do not go there.
1. The marinated beef was all mushed up together like mince meat, which do not look like beef and it smelled a little bit bad. (maybe the sliced beef would have been different) also ordered pork belly which was not fresh (slimy)
2. The kim chi pancake was horrible. it looked like an omelette all soft and mess.
3. the bbq was an al foil lined pan. so no true bbq taste. what's the point of having a bbq if its lined with al foil. normally your clothes smell like bbq afterwards. but there was no smell after todays dinner.
4. service was bad. the waiters seemed to be annoyed at everything like they don't want to take our order, give us water, or change the bbq
5. kimchi side dish was bad
6. for the hot pot the dumplings were not fresh
7. none of the dishes come with rice

I"m not sure about the other food. but please do not come here for korean bbq. you will greatly regret it.

Service is bad, asked for hot water and they asked us to go downstairs to take it as we were sitting on the 2nd floor.
Zha Jiang mian- was really nice! Noodles was chewy.
Bbq pork belly- was disappointing, full of fats and portion was really little.
Ginseng chicken soup- not too bad. Chicken was really soft aNd tasty thought could not really taste any gingseng. Contained rice in the chicken
Hot and spicy deep fried chicken- disappointing. It was too dry as there was too little sauce. Though the portion was huge,80% of the chicken strips were coated with flour so it felt like eating flour rather than chicken.

Last time I had dinner here was a monday thus they don't serve full menu and it's so disappoiting since I have a friend visiting from overseas on that day. This was one Of my favourite korean restaurant but I think it doesn't taste as good as it used to be.

Make sure you don't go on a Monday!. I wanted to take my girlfriend there to try the jjajangmyeon (Blackbean Noodles). But unfortunately we went there on a Monday and they don't serve the Chinese menu. Only the Korean menu which was a bummer. Apparently the head chef takes Monday off, so that is why there is only a limited menu.

We ended up going for the bibimbap, mandu and kimchi tofu. It was satisfactory but was really looking forward to the jjajangmyeon. Will have to return and try it.

Prices were reasonable but restuarant is a little difficult to find if you haven't been there before.

Went there today (Monday) with half price BBQ. Meat wasn't very good. We ordered seafood tofu soup, couldn't see much seafood in the bowl! Rice was lukewarm. But service was quite good.

Not overly impressed with this place. Ordered the seafood stir fry and looked everywhere on my plate for the seafood or anything that resembled it. Finally found a few miniscule octopus.. seriously one would need a magnifying glass to find them. The dish was spicy and that's about the only way it stayed true to it's description. Definitely will not be a second timer at this eatery.. have had far better Kim Chi elsewhere.

Worst Korean BBQ restaurant ever ever!!!. Please people believe me. I've tried this place on Monday when they offer half price for all bbq. The meat was sh*t, service was sh*t and everything was sh*t. The meat even looked gone bad and smelled really bad. I really wanted to tell this to the f*cking owner but my friend didn't want to make it problem.
Please there are heaps of Korean bbq Restaurants in the city where provides nice meat and reasonable price.
Believe me people cuz I'm Korean. None of my Korean friends go to that place cuz they all know the place is sh*t.
Although we do go there to eat jja jang myun. they have nice chinese food.
anwy Han Guuk Guan for bbq??? please please please........
I'm just a student who doesn't work for any restaurant.
I think I've explained enough.
I even joined this web site to leave this review.

The bimbibak was nice but temperature was lukewarm. The combination beef in stone pot was piping hot though. Service was fantastic - they mixed up our orders, and the chef actually came out to apologize!
Precious Taste
Food is average but atmosphere is poor and we went for dinner on hot day and they had no aircon on!! I got headache while eating!! Not good
Sherry
Food not up to standard. First an last time.

Slow service, decent korean food. Been here many times, food tastewise is alright, not bad. But service here is terrible and slow. Only reason to eat here is for their Jajangmyun - black sauce noodles, can't seem to find any other korean place that serves this chinese influenced korean dish.

Have only really tried the cold noodles and raw beef. Raw beef somehow tasted bitter.. didn't enjoy it. However, really like naengmyun (cold noodles). Cheapest i've eaten elsewhere - only $10 compared to the usual $15 at other places.
