I came in on a hot day and the waiter asked me if I would like to wait on an empty table so she could clear a table and seat me closer to the airconditioner. I thought this was really thoughtful. The food was really fresh and the ingredients very high quality. My highlights were the salmon hand roll and fish roe in the sushi rolls in the sushi platter.

I understand that the service was a bit slow during the dinner rush hour. But when i ordered the large SUSHI platter, which they said promised us with 42 pieces of sushi. They came back with a measly plate of 18 sushis (Yes i counted) and the rest were small pieces of sashimi. Went to the staff and all they could afford was a sorry. Asked them for a large bowl of rice for the sashimi, but it was definitely not worth the $68 that they charged us for that plate. I hope they would sort their menu soon

Recently changed ownership. Was previously one of my favourite small Japanese restaurants, but in a recent visit we received very poor quality food. Ramen missing ingredients that were on menu, hardly any meat (was see through in some parts because it was so thin) and was worse than 2min noodles. Just to top it off I also found hair in mine.
Jasmine Zhang
The food is really great especially the Fresh Scampi Sushi and Lobster Salad! Each dish is just like a master piece, very delicate look. Service is also very good, I think I will come here again~

Beautiful and fresh sushi. Authentic Japanese restaurant. Friendly staff.
It was my first time at Maguro today and it is my new favourite sushi place in Melbourne! Love it!
T Skazn
Average. I feel that Maguro is not bad but not amazing. Like many Japanese restaurants these days, Maguro feels like a chinese take on the cuisine rather than authentic Japanese. The prices and food are okay.

I like the food here. I like The sashimi as it is fresh and the kids love the bone noodle soup. Definitely will come back.

Decent food and variety. Must say the wait staff here are amazing. Great service.
Niki
My family and I tried the Signature Black and the Pork Bone Remen soup today. The Signature black is really special and double delicious. The eel is on top and the prawn and salmon are in the middle and rice is at the bottom. The size is big for two adults. The flavour of Remen soup is pure and tasty. My daughter loves it. Worth going back again. It is a family friendly restaurant.
Anna
They are not rude but unprofessional service skill. Not genuine Japanese cook, sashimi cut was bad but fish are fresh. Eel was cooked bitter (too much charcoal?) I think they cook better on hot food ... I hope they can improve skill and waste no more food.
Stella Feng
I have been there three times since they changed the management. The food there is fresh and nice. I like the fried Tofu and sushi most. Strongly recommend to choose the All you can eat choice. It worthy $38.5. It had more than 50 varieties.
Valeria Tsai
Special cooked food and nice service. It has changed owner but still at high standard. Not expensive but feel dresh and original taste which is important for Janpaness food. Worth to have a try.
JK
pretty disappointed about the food after the change in management. Sushi rice was way too warm, crumbled upon touch of the chopsticks. Chicken kaarage batter is too heavy now. Nowhere close to how good it used to be.
Christopher Brown
Good foods. The sashimi is fresh and the presentation is good. I really satisfied and worth to pay for it. Also I like the ramen, the noodle soup is supper delicious. It is a small place but the atmospher is good. The place is clean and tidy. I would come back to try again.
tiny place, ok atmosphere.
wagyu aburi nigiri was pretty good.
didn't like the ramen, though i generally don't get ramen so it might be good to someone who can appreciate it.

Have had takeaway from here before which prompted us to eat in last night. Staff were happy, polite and attentive, recommended the chefs special-don and some yummy sake! The food was super fresh and came out really quick, and the sashimi was delicious. We mentioned we were having a belated fathers day dinner and they gave us a cute little present! Will definitely be back here!
Cheeseburger Anyone? "Where's The Sauce"?
Called to place an order over the phone. The lady answered with just hello .. i was like hello? Who have i called? How about hello maguro restaurant can i help you? Anyway i ordered 1 katsu chicken curry and 1 chicken curry don. On the way to pick it up i had a steange feeling.. anyway picked it up got home and there's 2 chicken katsu currys!!! COME ON !! i ordered 2 things! It shouldnt be that hard... then i looked at menu again and it said order 2 get 1 free SO GOT RIPPED OFF ALSO! The chicken had, hard cartlige pieces in it. YUCK! Was also lacking a lot of taste and was slightly burnt. Not enough sauce and the rice was mushy . It left an odd after taste. Very disappointing..

This place is hugely overpriced. I usually go there if I am desperate for a quick dinner as there are not many restaurants close to where I live. I got the salmon chirashi for the first time, and paid $21 for 5 small pieces of salmon and rice!! Never going back again.

New Management.

Chicken Katsu Don or Chicken Katsu Curry is nice for takeaway but needs more fresh or pickled veggies on top please

Tasty meal

Dear customers, our new Opening Hours has changed. We will open from Tuesday to Sunday every evening, from 5.00pm to 9.30pm and we will be closed on every Monday. Looking forward your coming!😊

They changed management in December 2015. I won't be going again. The food wasn't anywhere near as good as it used to be. Don't waste your time.
Ethan
Lunch hours are outdated, along with lunch specials. Don't waste your time until 5pm. Decent food but frustrating that hours aren't updated.
Nicole Xiaoshu Cheng
It not as good as before. And for the sashimi delux, it's roughly 20pc and cost us like $50. What the hell. I won't step in again. And the staff is not professional, they don't even bring us the plate togetherness
Carl
We have been wanting to try this apparent 'hidden gem' for quite some time now. We finally managed to get around to it tonight, yet were sadly disappointed.
Unfortunately we did not even get to try the cuisine as the service was atrocious. We were given menus and not spoken to again for the next twenty minutes. During which time two other tables arrived, were given tea and subsequently had their order taken. And with that we left.
I don't want to blame the waitress, as it was moderately busy and she was seemingly the only floor staff rostered on.
However given, our presence was not acknowledged perhaps management need to take this into account when considering staffing levels and customer service.
We will hopefully try again for a take away meal sometime in the future.

Update: We finally got around to giving maguro a second chance tonight and ordered take away. I am happy to say that we were pleasantly surprised. The food was pretty good; fresh, quick and tasty. Whilst I doubt we'll be dining in anytime soon, I foresee future take away orders =]
Bella
I was very disappointed visiting this restaurant again because they have changed the menu totally. The menu is not the same as it posted on zomato now. I have been going to this restaurant since 2011. The portion of the food is much smaller now and not as tasty as before. I guess they have changed the chefs as well.
Andy Lim
Food was decent. Space a bit cramped. Service was okay.
Would like to go back but not sure if I would risk not being seated if the place is full.
McDoc
Quick dinner here before heading out to Wilson's Prom. Restaurant is quite small inside so book ahead if you want a seat. There is a small cute courtyard at the back but not sure if you can take the table. My veg ramen was a bit bland but the appetizers were delicious (agedashi tofu, maguro chicken and ox tongue). The complimentary tea is nice too.
Little.miss
Small intimate place but a bit over priced for what you get. Perhaps they could look at either increasing portion sizes or reviewing their pricing to attract more customers

Staff: Immensely helpful! There were two tables sitting near where I was who weren't familiar with Japanese food and the waitress took her time to explain the menu, make recommendations on what the customers enjoy.

Very fast service! Our appetisers came out within 20 minutes and our mains came shortly after.

Restaurant: It's really small. I was sitting against the window. It's a fairly awkward spot as the person sitting behind me had his seat all the way out so we had to push my entire table closer to the door because he refused to sit on his chair properly and make some space.

Food: We ordered the beef tataki with the yolk, salmon sushi, and two bowls of chicken ramen.

The beef takaki was flavoursome. They didn't drown the beef in the sauce like most places do. The egg yolk added that extra kick.

The salmon sushi is perfection! The salmon melted in my mouth with every bite.

The chicken ramen was so enjoyable to eat. All the elements in the bowl worked so perfectly together, with each ingredient providing a different texture in your mouth. I could probably drink the broth on its own all day if I could.

Overall: One thumbs up. Book beforehand as they did turn away a fair few customers.
Connie Tran
Terrible service. Manager is very impatient and rude and tells you off for asking about items on the menu, but ironically forgets one of our orders. Food is very average - equivalent to food court level and not authentic Japanese. Will not be coming here again.
Rachel Maas
Warrigal road is actually home to lots of eateries and Maguro is located near the freeway entrance opposite Pancake Parlour. I have been making an effort to eat more locally and try different places (especially if they are not on Yelp) to support local business.

Quite possibly the worst Japanese experience ever! I don't mind Malaysians owning/operating a Japanese place but PLEASE get the basics right. A packet of indomee has more flavour than your soup base! Where is the maggie noodles flavouring sachet when u need it??!! Please change your oil! When u fry ingredients with high water content, it deteriorates your oil which means that u need to change it regularly. Since when does beef tataki come with alpha alpha??!! Did I order a chicken sandwich?? Please go to Japan and experience what Japanese cuisine should look and taste like! O-sushi deserves respect, not this meat cleaver butchery! Stick to your D24 durians, u don't need to cook them!
Shellyb26
Maguro Japanese restaurant. Great restaurant. The prawn gyoza's were delicious. Reasonable prices, we'll be back.
Chenny Li
Don't get me wrong, I love the fresh sashimi here. But they charge 2% surcharge on EFTPOS! U heard me right, not only on credit card, but EFTPOS too! I rather pay ur wait staffs tips than laying U 2% on EFTPOS.
Omnomaliciousfood
Really fast service and affordable quality food for lunch. Place is kept clean and waiters were friendly. I would come here again for a quick bite.
Saving Dining And Travelling
Takoyaki is definitely better than the ones we had on the streets in Japan! There's more octopus in them and very soft and creamy texture on the inside is just the best. The main meals are just as impressive. The salmon sushi is pretty good too though the best is still at Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo that we had 2 years ago. The lunch specials are $9.50 each at the time of writing. For the price and quality of food here, I'll recommend this restaurant anytime!

Maguro is a tiny restaurant located on a strip of shops just down the road from the mega shopping complex that is Chadstone. The size of the interior may give the impression of the local takeaway, but I assure any readers that the fare here will more than make up any interior aesthetics shortcomings. Then again, that’s what puts the charm into these joints.
Slowest service ever. First time there, food was good, but don't go if you're starving... Takes forever for the food to come out. Staff aren't very friendly either.

What a gem!!. Randomly went to try this place. Great tuna/salmon sashimi, a lot better than most of the Japanese places around. So tasty and melt in your mouth.
Soft shell crab roll was fantastic, really delicious! Presentation was great.
Ramen was good and filling. Plenty of bits and pieces to nibble on. Had the cheesy/pork.
Service was very good. Polite and quick. Our dishes came out one after another as we finished.
Can't wait to go back. Definately top sashimi. You get what you pay for.
Might not be Japanese but they are really good. Easy to get a seat and enjoy a awesome meal.

Horrible food esp ramen

Will be back!. We ordered take away (for Valentines Day). The service was great and I was given some suggestions that I took.
Sushi and Sashimi we very good. While not cheap, you do get what you pay for. We also went with the suggested Signature Black, Eel & Salmon on rice, a great suggestion.
The restaurant is small so good for a small group or a quiet dinner for a couple.

Well... I am here at maguro... So disappointed. Valentines day Ordered 3dishes 1 hour ago and only one came out and It was a wrong order too....
So angry...... ruined my day... will never comeback

Up nosed snobs beware. The sashimi and wagyu are mouth watering. Best me and partner have ever fared. Tried lots of other dishes that are interesting for the taste buds, however the prior are definitely our indulgence.

I love the service. Friendly, attentive and knowlagable. Meals came out with perfect timing. At first glance the resturant may not look professionally interior decorated or spacious, but that's what adds to the intimate and charming atmosphere. Plus the feel is more authentic that way.

Personally we are uncomfortable eating our meals in up market posh la di da establishments.. As for price, your paying for QUALITY. Not quantity, so if you complain about the value of its size, I suggest sticking to your over piled plate diners instead. THIS IS JAPANESE!!!
Renee
Excellent service, friendly and informative staff. The food was fresh and delicious. Amazing small restaurant. Will return.

Good value. The lunch special ($9.50 meals) was very good value.

Fantastic Restaurant. I have never had such a good Japanese cuisine in my whole life! Maguro Japanese Restaurant has really impressed me with their lovely service and incredibly tasty food! I had my dinner there last week, and could not take the smile of my face...it was that good! Try it, you won't regret it.
Matt
Fantastic food and open during the week for a quick lunch
Love Food
Best Mussels!!!. I have dined in at Maguro many times because really love their Fresh Sashimi. Not the best decoration in town but really one of the best quality ones. And I am really impressed with the fresh mussels with Sake source today. Each mussel is big and really sweet. I m not a big fan of mussel but can't stop eating them at Maguro. Must try! Will definitely come back to Maguro for the mussels and the sashimi!
FoodHunter
Really?? A Japanese restaurant?! Nah... Don't think so... The food is below average, doesn't taste like Japanese, more like Chinese style of japanese. Service is... Horrible! Would not recommend anyone to try
Ganaman
Great Maki, Gyoza, Sashimi but avoid the Sea Urchin. Tastes nothing like it should. A tad expensive.
Melludee
Went for lunch on a weekday.
I quite liked the interior of the venue and the service was quite good. The food was average for the $9.50 lunch deal - not amazing but not crap. Wouldn't mind coming back but only for the $9.50 lunch.
Will
Service was average. Food was good. Price was a little too steep.
Nexus
Total disappointment! The food was so average and the service was a shame! We order 3 entree while waiting for friends and came out two, when we ask about the 3rd entree the staff said that we only order two in a rude manner without even double check the docket!

When everyone arrives, we order our food and the first one come after 20 minutes, we waited for another 10 for the next one to come and the rest just stop. When we are quite frustrated after waiting for 45minutes for our dish( as we are very hungry atm) and try to ask about it, then only it comes, without any apologies and explanation! And we ordered a share dish (calamari) and didn't come after everything came out we ask the staff again he said that we didn't order it, this time all of us are very certain that we did give the order correctly, we don't wan to argue anymore since we're so hungry and try to finish and leave ASAP!

After we finish our dish, we tried to talk to the 'owner' guy at the counter about what we encounter but his respond was not helpful by giving excuse that they have new staff recently, can't handle too many order in a time, but it wasn't busy at all!! Didn't give proper apologize and when we ask whether he is the owner he said he is just a staff( which we think he was lying) and refuse to solve the problem! Total disappointment for a japanese restaurant under Chinese management, never come again!

After driving past the restaurant, but not realizing it was there we chose to visit last night! I wondered if the flashing lights caught our attention?
Anyhow- the food was fantastic. Fresh and full of flavor. The restaurant was full of Japanese people which is always a good sign. The service was excellent. We had not booked but a table was quickly found. Our food was delicious and we will go back with the family. Really liked the decor.
RamenSnob
Isappointed is an understatement. Walked in and was greeted with a look and point "there" to our seats. Ordered a unagi don and Katsu ramen. Waiter advised I should try the pork bone soup base. So I did. Wife's Unagi don arrived in 5 mins. Tasted OK. My Ramen arrived , another 20 mins later...great . Serving size is quite decent but flavour is below average. Soup was creamy but bland tasting and not fragrant. Noodles were like instant noodle grade. The soft often centred egg was the only decent thing. Crappy way to spend 30 bucks when hungry. Won't back even if it was somebody else's shout.

Japanese in the suburbs. My partner and i went to Maguro for my birthday on Saturday 14th April.
We booked to make sure we were able to get a table. Lucky we did as the place was very busy, which is always a good sign.

Not being that familar with Japanese food, I asked the waiter to suggest some dishes.
We had wonderful calamari and prawns as our entree.
For the mains i had the Katsu ramen and my partner had a plate of prawn and salmon sushi.
Both were absolutely delicious and we decided to get another sushi plate. mmm mmmmmmmmmmm
For dessert i ordered the black sesame icecream with red bean paste and cream ... wow

All in all a fabulous evening and will definitely be going back.

Thankyou to all the staff for making us feel very welcome

Tonkatsu ramen was good soup was bit of salty but still ok ! sushi ok but California roll was using crab stick as filling don't really like it ! Service was so slow I have to say hire more staff plz

A great place to eat.. I live very near Maguro and we have dinner there or take away at least once a week, usually Monday nights. I have also taken clients there for lunch and friends, all love it no complaints at all.
My daughter is 11 and loves the katsu don I think there would be a melt down if I didn't order it for her often. I love the Californian rolls which are priced well and always made fresh.
The staff are very welcoming and the chef is very good. I have eaten at many Japanese venues around Melbourne and Maguo yes is a tinybit more expensive than some nori roll joint in town, but the quality and taste is worth it.

Bad service that night i went therr and the food is not as good as i expected.. I wouldnt recommend this place to any of my ftiends.,

Nice atmosphere. Overcharged and mediocre food.. Situated at the inconspicuous corner of a block next to Caltex petrol station, Maguro haven't had the most strategic location any would hoped. But a peek inside, one would quite suprised with the neat decorations and careful presentation of a japanese restaurant packed into a small room. Atmosphere is relaxed and buzzy.

The service was good, waiter was friendly and courteous. We ordered Katsu Don and Katsu ramen but waiter came back to tell us Katsu has been sold out and there's not much of alternative. We went with the sliced pork ramen and found it to be quite mediocre. The sliced pork was decent though could have been more generous (after making us wait for 35 mins) . The soup base has a creamy texture to it but no distinctive taste to it and isn't fragrant. The noodle looks like it's came out from a instant noodle packet.

What suprised us as well is the price tag. We were been charged without much notice for the tea and food is quite pricey. No other amends were given for the shortage of katsu (deep fried pork) except for a mere apology after a long wait.

The overall impression is disappointment after all the neat and professional environment has to offer. Wouldn't recommend people to come to this restaurant.

Cute Place, Great Service, Fresh Food!. Found great reviews so i decided to try this out myself after a movie at chadstone.

When i walked in i was delighted by the small but extremely cosy layout. It had great decor and ambience. When we arrived it was late so were the only ones dining but the waiter was attentive yet unobtrusive.

The dishes we had were:
> Sashimi Salmon- tender! fresh! chilled! (9 pieces $12)
> Chicken/Egg on Rice - This was cooked just right but was something simple ($12)
> Ox Tongue - this was a treat, didnt expect the slightly firm texture ($9 Entree)

The food was clean and enjoyable but just simple, nothing "wow". However as a regular cheap place to go, its perfect and not overdone.

I've already organised a friends birthday party to be there. As a hint if you decide to go, park at Officeworks across the road and walk over.
----
Just adding to the review as i've just had the birthday party. Great dishes and recommendations from our group include the fresh salmon (again), salmon and rice, takiyaki balls and jumbo eel! Also had the soft-shell crab hand roll was a bit dear ($7.50) but worth a try.

Horrible. I will never tried it as the salamon we had was off..............never ever dine in here again

Hmm..... I heard that the Chef use to work at a well know Japanese restaurant at Toorak Village area, "O___a".

Quality raw ingredient wise good (I found it fresh).
Cooking skill wise. I expect higher as graduate from that Japanese restaurant.

I hope they improve quickly.

Looking forward to it.

-----25 Apr, 2011-----

Salmon and prawn suhsi. My regular lunch spot. I am working around the area, accidently discovered this new Japanese cafe. Their lunch special is hell of a bargain!!!! It is very good price for that quality and quantity of food.

Great Catering. I had a great engagement party thanks to Maguro. My boyfriend proposed to me few weeks ago, therefore we decided to throw an engagement party and invite few good friends. One of my friend introduced this newly opened Japanese Restaurant, I had great bargin due to their opening special. They did a great job to catering a party with very short notice. I just would like to say "Bravo"!!!!!

If you are big eater like me, you will love the Sushi and Sashimi Combo at Maguro Sushi. Maguro Sushi only openned on 28th March but I had have its Sushi and Sashimi Combo 6 times in 2 weeks. I cannot find any other place with so many sushi and sashimi pieces with good quality for less than 30 dollars. I do enjoy them!

Fresh scampi, yummy!!!. Maguro isn't located at a very busy spot, but I am really surprised that the chef there is trying so hard to make special dishes for the customers. I tried one of the specials there today - fresh scampi, really YUMMY!!! After I had the fresh scampi sushi, the chef made the miso soup with the head. What a nice combination!!! Highly recommend to all sushi lovers! Feel really warm after the nice miso soup. You will be surpised with such special dishes in a not very big but unique Japanese cafe!

Rainbow Maki. The rainbow maki was so colorful.....my kids loved it very much.

I was not a Eel person, I hardly order Grilled Eel. But this Jumbo Eel at Maguro Japanese Restaurant really changed my mind. I just had one bite it really blow up my mind......the taste of eel, salmon together was incredible. I really loved it. Besides, I have never ever ate a Grilled Eel in a JUMBO size......marvelous. Definitely coming back for another JUMBO EEL......

One of the few things that can brighten up my day instantly is none other than unexpectedly finding a fantastic restaurant. After brief discussions in the car on the way to a friend's house the other day, Yuye suggested "let's just eat somewhere close and on the way". I was going to pull over at Pancake Parlour that just opened recently right next to Chadstone Shopping Centre but as it was on the wrong side of the road and eating there would mean doing a u-turn amidst a whole lot of traffic on busy Warrigal Rd, I decided against the idea. Right opposite Pancake Parlour was a tiny Japanese cafe called Maguro. I've driven past it many times but the thought never occurred to me that it might make a good meal. I believe they opened their doors in March 2011, a good half a year ago. The outside of the restaurant is not the most eye-catching or attractive so it's no wonder not many people know about the place yet. The interior is simple but fitting although nothing spectacular. I definitely
