When it comes to a nice and cosy bar, i think of Hihou
You walk into a nice and cosy setting where you can seat down and enjoy a drink and have a chat. Love how they have such a good range on the menu and most drinks are japanese inspired.
We had the shoya and really enjoyed it. Love the ambience and the service here
Great place as a Japanese bar. Tried the set dinner. A bit pricey. The bar is well hidden - as the name suggests. Liked their sake based cocktail.
With a nondescript door, Hihou is definitely a classic Melbourne secret.
Ordered:
Hihou set, 5 courses ($60.00)
🚬'Cuban' spicy tuna cigar
🌽 Sweet corn and scallop kaki-age, nori, shicimi
☕ Coffee cured salmon sashimi, cucumber, wakame and kimizu
🍗 Hihou fried chicken
🍢 Kushiyaki - kurobata pork belly skewers, teriyaki, fried potatoes, nori salt
Review:
I love degustation menus because they make me go out of my comfort zone. It makes me try new things and new combos I never would've chosen for myself... and it's all decided for me 😆.
Our favourite was the last dish - the pork belly skewers. It had this layer of fat in just the right places that gave it an amazing burst of flavor. I really really enjoyed every single bite.
All the other dishes were memorable and unique too. Who ever thought about combining corn and scallop?!
The service was really accommodating. My friend and I were rushing prior to another appointment so we asked to have everything come out asap. Even on our tiny table they made sure to keep the food coming one after the other. Amazing!!
Side note: make sure you make a booking on the Hihou website!
Secret bars are my favourite place to hang out in Melbourne. This place is fab as you ring the secret door bell and walk into a very posh bar.
We enjoyed a round of lemon & gin cocktail (but I can't remember the name as I can't find an updated menu) after dinner.
Lovely ambience and very relaxing atmosphere.
I stopped in here after dinner. Actually it took some searching out. It is quite hidden. There is no sign. There is just a door on the south side of the street on Flinders Lane with a call button. If you round the corner on to Spring Street, you'll see a bottle shop. Hihou is right above the bottle shop (I can't remember the name).
Once you get in, the atmosphere is fantastic. Very subdued and calming. The windows also give you a great view over the Treasury Gardens.
The food is supposed to be very good but I only had a cocktail. I had the EDO Murasaki (Japanese whiskey, Campari, Averna, yuzu, lychee syrup and shiso). It was a fantastic cocktail. Spirit forward (which I wanted) and quite balanced. It was also served over a beautiful hand carved ice cube.
I look forward to going back!
Absolutely in love with this place, it is a hidden bar in CBD, very nice and relaxing area, fantastic atmosphere, and great service, very nice collection of sake, Japanese whisky and wine.
Amazing hidden place that indeed surprised me and my friend. We ordered cocktails and they tasted great. Good service, good environment.
Hihou is secluded, secretive, and a world on its own. No flashy and fancy signages to even point out that this place even exist. You have to press a door bell and someone will answer the door to bring you into this place. It is like entering the closet of Narnia and into a world on its own when you step into this bar.
I love the exclusivity of this bar. You get to have a cosy catch up with friends in a relaxed atmosphere.

Came here with AG post-work for a catch up. Everything was on point.
🍹 DRINKS: "Roku Gin and Tonic" $unknown: came as 1 glass, very smooth and thoroughly enjoyable
🍽 FOOD: "Fried Chicken Balls x 6" $12-15?: these were fried to a crispy-sweet perfection, with the squeeze of lemon really enhancing the flavours. 📷 AMBIENCE: I loved the "hidden bar" aesthetic, the dim lights, and the windows giving way to an elevated night view of Spring Street.🧂SERVICE: good
Would revisit for other drinks, or even to try the Hihou burger!

This place is such a hidden gem! Love the ambience and food! We sat at the bar and ordered their 5 set course. Everything was delicious! The staff was so friendly too. Highly recommend this place!
Excellent selection of unique drinks, bar staff very courteous and skilled, food was incredible. We were lucky enough to be there during a quiet period, so service was nice and fast.
A different bar. Modern Japanese fusion style food and they are famous for their hot dog, Hihou Dog. A beer and a simple hot dog. Why not... Nice and quiet, good place for a quiet and romantic catch up.
Great selection of Japanese drinks in a cool contemporary space. Took a while to find the entrance, but worth the search. If you love Japanese food and alcohol, it’s a top find in Melbourne CBD.... and quiet so you can hear people (aka. good for dates)
Hidden (very hidden) gem in the city for fancy Japanese inspired cocktails and food. A must go for dinner date.
then again the same old story

The folks who’ve provided Melbournians with Hihou were not messing around with the hidden bar concept Hihou is Japanese for “Secret Treasure” and entrance to this establishment is only done via ringing a doorbell on an unmarked door in Flinders Lane, low lighting adds to the ambience, along with Japanese Décor so glad we went before they close and move on -brilliant service, fresh tasty food to die for. The only downside-those damn face masks- well done guys
"Hidden" Japanese cocktail bar above a Japanese restaurant overlooking Fitzroy Gardens. Interesting range of Japanese whiskeys (not just the typical Hibiki, etc), sakés, shochus, etc. Cocktails small but creative. Cozy space too.

The best Japanese bar in Melbourne, food is amazing the cocktail and the drink list are super good
Lovely little sake bar. No signage, hidden black door off Flinders Lane. Ring the door bell that looks like the delivery back door of a restaurant, the amazing Japanese owners will great you in no time.
