It had a bit of a rough start when they took over from No. 1 Steamboat, but since then they've expanded their menu and improved the quality, style, and service significantly. It's in a great location, they're open when other places are closed, and the price is extremely affordable.
I am surprised that not many people know this restaurant. Cheap and delicious food served by a lovely couple. Their coffee has a really distinctive flavor not found elsewhere. Their foods' sauces including Curry Paste, Satay, Lemongrass,etc... are homemade and unique. Highly recommended for those who likes Vietnamese or Thai food.
The restaurant is great! Lovely young couple that run the place. The Heinan chicken is freakin' awesome, pay no mind to the retard comment below - it comes traditionally (steamed) or deep fried (which I tend to opt for) - the ginger sauce is par excellence. Great value, clean restaurant, lovely owner / chef!
boo carol for that last review, you should probably get out less. tam tam is a little gem of a restaurant! clean, friendly, honest and fresh! the unbelievable special of $6 for hanaim chicken is the best. it comes cold (steamed traditionally) or you can order it hot in which case they briefly deep fry the steamed portion. Sounds like carol ordered it hot. fresh chilli? what a bonus! and the 50c soup is a fresh clear broth obviously made from chicken and is subtlety flavoured with fresh and dried spring onions. It's the prefect heal-all for winter. Where else in the city can you get a bowl of chook broth for that price?
Service is warm and the owners are lovely, I work close by and eat here every week. Entrees are delicious- love the thigh chicken pieces and the home made sauces yum!

A small family owned business, Hahn and Tommy at Tam Tam restaurant in Carlton produce delicious , very reasonably priced food and attention to detail table service. The traditional Vietnamese noodle soup 'Pho' is soooo yummy- I always have it with sliced rare beef and beef balls, heaps of their super hot chilli and wedges of juicy sour lemons squeezed into it. I just love chicken wings too and the chicken wings Tommy makes I just have to have more and more!!! Supporting small businesses and delicious food is a win win and 10/10 from me!! :)
$6 lunch special - fried chicken with rice and a basic salad. Add a yum chicken soup for another 50c. This makes me happy. Working in the city, I'm always on the lookout for tastey lunches for around $5. Very friendly staff, good honest atmosphere. Could do with some heating in the winter though (or blankets on the chairs). Cool in summer.
