At the awkward time of 330pm, we were trying to decide between lunch or dinner. Dunch? Lunner? It definitely wasn’t afternoon tea as we were starving and needed something substantial. So off we went to CHE for some chicken. Chicken is great anytime of the day, don’t you think?
Since CHE stands for chicken, helado and empanada, we ordered all three to try. First the chicken. It was very well-seasoned - smoky and peppery. The skin was very crisped, if not a bit too crisped. A bit dry here and there, but overall it was tasty.
Moving on the dulce de leche helado (ice cream). This was my favourite. Soft, creamy and surpassingly light. We added an alfajor and the crumbly cookie and gooey dulce de leche were a delightful contrast to the soft serve.
Now for the empanada. While the fillings were delicious, we found the pastry a bit too firm. Never had an authentic empanada so we can’t be sure if that was how it was supposed to be. It didn’t come cheap at $5 a piece.
Last but not least, we also ordered a pumpkin and feta salad, and this was my partner’s favourite. The herbal pesto had a refreshing punchy flavour, bringing life to the simple roasted pumpkin.
Warm and friendly service, coupled with a relaxed and casual atmosphere, we can see ourselves returning.
Stopped by for lunch on a rainy Melbourne day. No one else in this place, and couldn't understand why. The food was absolutely delicious and the selection of Argentinian beverages was great. Loved the Empanadas sooo good!!!
I really rate this place - we’ve been here a couple times since it opened. Really good, flavoursome chicken, hand cut chips and spicy mayo. Also addicted to empanadas now. Biiiiiiiit pricey but that’s ok we will live.
Casual venue with limited but well designed menu. We started with smoked beef empanadas with chimichurri. These were really tasty and had a good ratio of meat to pastry. Then between 4 we shared a whole chicken with the quinoa, broccoli and kale salad and a large chips. The chicken was juicy and the chips were excellent and crispy.
Had lunch on a beautiful Saturday and was able to sit outside. Enjoyed the chicken sandwich and empenadas reminded me of Buenos Aires. High quality tasty South American food. Would go back and recommend for an affordable lunch in Fitzroy!
Can't fault the food here. Nice and friendly staff. Clean warm space. We ate here early on a Thursday evening and enjoyed two empanadas (smoked chicken and traditional beef - I'd highly recommend both!) a half chicken and small chips and a salad. The chicken was delicious, nice crispy skin. The chips were outrageously delicious. Light, HOT, tasty and crisp. We order chimichurri and spicy mayo on the side which I'd highly recommend and had the iceberg salad - which hubby was raving about. Definitely go there. The above plus a beer was $50
Winner winner chicken dinner takes on a whole new meaning with the recent opening of CHE by the culinary geniuses who brought us San Telmo and Pastuso. Take your classic free range chicken, throw in some face time with some gorgeous Peruvian spices (48 hours to be exact), give it a good roasting over a charcoal grill, and viola, you have CHE's signature chicken. But it turns out CHE is more than just a charcoal chicken and chips joint. There's also helados (ice cream) and empanadas. Chicken. Helados. Empanadas. CHE. All the makings of a grand and delicious time.

Hey Fitzroy, there’s a new chicken joint in town. This one is by Chef Alejandro Saravia and the rest of the team behind San Telmo and Pastuso. CHE is a cosy little place, occupying the space that used to be Shocolate, though there’s also outdoors seating around the side.
Che boludo. Que pasa?
Didn't quite hit the spot in terms of Argentinean authenticity. Just check my profile pic, that's me, eating an empanada... In argentina. OK? See that face pleasure? That's what real cheese does to a man.
Dale carajo ;) ponele más honda xo
With memories still warm from my travels through Argentina and Peru last year, I dropped in to Che to reminisce.
I'm half Chilean, so empanadas are sacred. I'm more partial to the Chilean, soft dough style, but the Argentines tend to fry them, and these were pretty good. They're $5 each (a little expensive, but not too bad), with my favourite being the smoky beef. Ok, now it's important you know this before you go, Latin Americans are NOT good with time. We can be very slow, but boy did these guys take that to the next level. It took half an hour to get a quarter chicken and chips ($12), which wouldn't be so bad if it was busy, but it was 5pm and the place was almost empty. As for the chicken, the spices were nice; sweet and peppery, but the chicken was a little dry. The meal was topped off with some of my favorite things from Argentina, Alfajores (biscuits with dulce de leche in them), which were delicious at $3 each, and dulce de leche soft serve ($5) with Malbec jam (+$3), which was OK - I've had better for a lot less. Plus, it's a very small serve.
Overall, a pleasant experience, which was a let down a little by long wait times, dry-ish chicken, some expensive items and a cold seating area (why are the front doors left open during Winter?). I appreciate this is a new place from the brains behind San Telmo and Pastuso, so I'll come back in a few months to see if anything has changed.
This is hands down THE BEST chicken joint in town. Every dish we ordered was flavourfull and packed with super smokey goodness. It's the sort of place you'd want to unashamedly use your hands, lick your fingers and devour every last scrap of food.
Hands downs the best grilled chicken and salads on the block! Nice lunch joint if you're working around Fitzroy, cruise down and get half a chicken (which is nowhere near dry) and get the quinoa salad cooked with almond milk. Mad mix for $20! Highly recommended. - AS Colour Fitzroy recommendations
Love the empanadas and the chicken here. I'm Argentinian and know what good empanadas are. Pitty that they have very limited choices in the menu. I think they would really benefit if the also offered Choripan!
Yum! I had a special which was a chicken roll, delicious.
BF had chicken and chips - tasty moist chicken with fantastic fries!
Will be coming back.
