My experience was that Handcraft provided both an excellent product and top service. I arrived before my drinking partner and they immediately gave me some water - not just tap water, either. Ice-cold, in a bottle with a sprig of mint. When my partner arrived I ordered the Ethiopian coffee in long back format and it was really excellent in terms of flavour and temperature. My partner had the granola (but without the yoghurt and with soy milk instead. The soy milk came in a cute little bottle, the granola was good (included nuts) and fresh fruit on top was beautifully presented. They noticed when our water was nearly finished and they quickly provided a new bottle - we didn't have to request it. *AND* a very comfortable cushion was provided to sit on (other hipster café owners, take note!) The only improvement I can see needed is to have more vegan food available, otherwise I have no hesitation in recommending this place. Maybe I was just lucky?
*Awesome* place. Run by lads who are as passionate about coffee as I am about tea. They were happy to spend time explaining different coffees and their processing techniques which added to the whole experience. And the coffee - wow. One of only two times in my life where I could drink and truly enjoy the flavour of black coffee. An absolute treat and a real experience.
A really great find.... Tucked away at one end of Newtown, but if you want a really awesome coffee experience, you won't be disappointed. Very fast and enthusiastic service too. All in all, a great spot! Must come back and try the food when I have more time...
Strong hot heavy creamy coffee, would have been perfect with a bit of syrupyness but it showed up all the more expensive coffee places on King St. Also very fast and friendly service despite the popularity. A perfect coffee stop.
I’m not the biggest coffee connoisseur but this place does amazing coffee every time! staff always happy to greet you and friendly service! this time stayed for a few hours to study and they were in no rush to shoo me out 😩🙏🙏 gotta love the lofi chillhop beats playin in the back 😍😍
Love the cozy vibe and friendly staff. The cheese toast and iced latte I ordered are also great. But I really hope they will ask for more food options and desserts though. Nevertheless, definitely will go back for more coffee :)
The coffees and water came almost instantly!
We ordered two different burgers, and they were delicious.
I can't quite remember which one I had but he had the Seoul Burger (which was amazing!) and the chips were memorable.
We have kept going back, just for the coffee as it is the best! Even with soy. (we both can't have dairy)
Anyway, would definitely recommend anyone to go to this lovely cafe!
Every barista I know raves about this place. I am now one of those baristas! :D
Handcraft is a place for people who are obsessed with coffee and want to be amongst similar company. They have a food menu, but it's more to complement their coffee experience rather than to satisfy a big appetite. Their coffee menu is much bigger, offering seasonal blends and guest roasters. I imagine most people just come for the coffee.
Tried Primary Coffee's Honduras (Cinnamon and Pear). Very subtle and delicious. It is too easy to sit there all day just drinking coffee and doing not much else really.
They also sell whole beans and merchandise too. That day I walked out with a new cup and an expensive but delicious Geisha blend.
Stop by about 3 mornings a week n grab a takeaway double shot flat white, which is always strong, hot n cheap. Cheaper than most along King St. Sometimes I will also get a smoked ham, cheese tomato toasty. It is a very satisfying sanga, particularly when lightly toasted. The caff is right behind a bus stop and can get noisy with peak hour. The laptop brigade mostly come from nearby Moore Theological College, strongly conservative Anglican, so that's def unusual for Newtown. Staff are a reasonably intense and efficient crew of South Korean and Japanese and their coffee love shows, but they do enjoy a ciggie, perched on the window ledge of the TCM clinic a coupla doors down. Now and again u can celebrity spot. I've seen Sydney art/media crowd portraitist Nick Harding, sometime journo David Marr and local identity Big Wal there over the months. Anyhow, give it a go, you'll like it.
An interesting cafe obviously obsessed with specialty coffee and educating customers.
Coffee ordered:
Double espresso, a Colombian coffee this time. It was a well extracted, bright and juicy espresso. A little sharp for me as I prefer more berry and chocolate flavour profiles ... but I wasn't asked or offered other singles at the time. It was served in an espresso cup but it just fit the double, I would have preferred a small mug to swirl and cool the espresso.
Ambience:
Lots of people on laptops and from the looks of it just hanging out. Which is great and I think Newtown is the perfect place for that kind of atmosphere. Unfortunate for me I had to take a seat outside, which is not a great spot, windy and busy foot traffic make for an uninviting experience.
Well if I were on a stroll down king st, which does happen often, I would stop in for a takeaway and am keen to try other brews.
Coffee by Proud Marry.
This cute little cafe also serving a good chai latte, you can choose between loose leaf or bag.
They have a decent size selection of cake and pastry too.
On the table with your coffee, they give you a bottle of water with sprig of mint leaves to par fine the water.
Nice touch.
