Thankyou to the staff who looked after my family on Saturday night (7th jan) whilst celebrating my 40th birthday, this little gem of a place is yet to dissapoint....table service was fantastic, our meals all came out with great timing, and food was to die for, this is my favourite restaurant in the Hunter Valley, and a lot of my family had never eaten at the restaurant let alone japenese, and everyone walked away extremely happy with their meals
I went here for my work Christmas party. We had a very large group of sixteen people. The staff were incredibly accomodating, friendly and helpful. There was no problems accomodating dietary requirements or our desire to order entrees separately from mains, the meals were very generous in portion sizes and everyone agreed their meals were incredibly tasty. The kitchen service was really fast despite being busy and catering to such a large group. Our mains came out within twenty minutes of ordering. The atmosphere was lovely on the night we attended. The only change I would suggest is more Japanese items on the menu as it seemed to be mostly Thai. We had wrapping paper and rubbish from christmas presents and bon-bons which we were prepared to take away with us but the staff cleaned it away for us! Overall, we had a great night and everyone was talking about visiting Oishii again. Thanks for a great night!
Oishii has stood the test of time. Whilst the minimalist decor shows signs of fading and age, Oishii continues to dish up the same quality it has been doing for years, nailing consistency where others seem to fall down. The menu hasn't changed, but I don't think it needs to, offering refined versions of your usual favourites across Japanese and Thai cuisines. The duck curry ($25.50) is mild, slightly sweet with lychee and keeps the duck the star of the show.
The pork gyozas ($15) are meaty, wrappers are tender as well as lightly crisp fried. The teppanyaki beef ($28.90) is my favourite and worth every penny. The meat melts in your mouth and is accompanied with sizzle-plate asian greens, miso, rice and the most delectable butter and umami-rich sauce. Expect real wasabi and a beautiful view if sitting outside. Oishii do a few options by the glass and have a rather modest bottle list making it an easy selection. You're paying what some would deem a premium, that said you're experiencing a premium. Oishii is no local in view, dining room, or food.
Extremely quick and efficient. Friendly staff. No atmosphere though - Very noisy. Delicious duck carpaccio, curry puffs and gyoza.
Oishii is located in quite a prominent place in Hunter Valley. To be honest, we were never interested to even try because of the weird combination that they pitched their restaurant as: Thai and Japanese restaurant. However, on this occasion, we decided to eat some rice and noodles as we have already had way too much cheese and bread… and apparently there are little to none options around the area.
This spacious restaurant in the middle of the gorgeous Hunter Valley offers dishes from Japanese and Thai cuisines. The following dishes were shared between a few of us:
- Thai fish cakes -- had a good amount of heat and were quite average, nothing spectacular. Nice and chewy, and good with the dipping sauce.
- California rolls -- also quite average, although I have eaten a fair few California rolls in my life, so these did not stick out in particular. Salmon was fresh, which is always a bonus.
- Tofu teppanyaki -- the tofu was delicious! The sauce they use to marinate the tofu cubes was very moreish, with plenty of umami flavour. Also comes with a bowl of rice, miso soup and a side of stir fried veggies. All together, a pleasant and filling dish.
- Pad Thai Prawns -- had bursts of complementing flavours, such as the sweet, sour and salty. I personally enjoyed the texture of the noodles, although some of my dining companions thought they were too chewy (perhaps slightly undercooked).
- Fried rice with seafood -- this was excellent. Had plenty of the "wok hei" flavour that you want in a fried rice. Solid dish.
The dishes were quite pricey for what they were, but the overall quality is generally good. Would recommend if looking for a decent feed in the Hunter.
Although the decor here is somewhat stark and there is a certain lack of ambience the food more than made up for those shortcomings. The curry puffs were delicious and the Penang Duck Curry was outstanding. The sauce was smooth and flavoursome with just the right combination of spices and herbs. The grain fed beef Teri Yaki was amazing and was the most delicious, tender and flavoursome beef I have had in many years. Whilst it is obvious that English is not the wait staff's first language they were efficient and helpful and we had no complaints about the service. Would definitely go there again when in the Hunter Valley.
Great food. My husband and I both ordered curries, one being a Penang curry which was the best Penang curry we've had. The masaman curry was good but the Penang was the stand out, service was good.
We only tried the Thai food as the restaurant isn't located near a fishery. The food is very good better then most of the Thai restaurants in Sydney. If your in the hunter and you get bit tired of wine and cheese and are after some food with bit of spice then Oishii is a go.
As the name suggest all dishes we ordered were just delicious!!
Decent Thai curries in a funky setting. Competitive prices for Pokolbin. Make sure you take your own wine as the list is poor.
Overall a nice change from the overpriced mod-oz joints around the area.
Good place for take away, food tasted pretty good.
Odd. Quite an odd establishment in the heart of wine country. I was bemused by the fusion Japanese/Thai menu, two styles of food that don't usually match and are worlds apart. That said the meals were ok. Nothing special or spectacular but enough to give you an asian fix in the Hunter Valley. I was a little off put by the stark warehouse like decor and ambience of this place, and it almost felt more like a school cafeteria than restaurant. I think some more thought need to be put in this.
Cheaply priced for the area for nice food. Pad thai was fantastic (that commenter before doesn't know what they are on about) and sushi/sashimi was fantastic too.
The only thing stopping me from rating it higher is the often abrupt attitude of the staff. They could get more customers if they were nicer to their customers. Don't let that get to you and it's sweet.
Quality of food is great for value and customer service us awesome. We came here the other night and we really liked our food that we came back tonight. Highly recommended to try their grass-fed beef teppanyaki. I had mine in medium and it was perfect! We also enjoyed the sashimi platter and the salmon carpaccio. Fish was so fresh!
Make sure you come here with a booking as it is really busy. You have a better chance of getting a table if you come around 7:30pm on a weekday without a booking.
Online Order - Takeaway
Online ordering through the website was convenient and easy. Option to add a special note on each item is helpful. I ordered Thai foods and the taste was almost close to the authentic style. Panang Duck Curry is highly recommended. Please make sure that you call the restaurant before pick-up. My food was given away to someone due to confusion in name by the staff. I have to wait another 30 minutes to get the food cooked newly. Looks like the owner or the manager was running everywhere to manage and he is genuinely apologetic.
We had an amazing experience in Oishii restaurant and truly enjoyed stir fried beef and sizzling. Vibe and service were also impressive.
It’s a nice place to dine in with family and friends.
Brilliant service and lovely food. The staff were attentive and brought the food quickly. The food was tast and reasonable serves
Service was amazing. Very friendly and courteous staff. Food served was rather quick. The food was flavoursome and great value for money. We loved the entire experience. Highly recommend.
For this experience, I would rate ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Went during weekdays sometime last week and was amazed too see so many people ( clear indication that restaurant must have been doing well)
Big fan of Thai cuisine and Japanese Cuisine, so ended up ordering alot of food. Staff was talented and friendly, which adds to the vibe.
Salmon Carpaccio : Omg, what a beautiful preparation of thinly cut salmon with japanese ginger dressing. Takes the entire dish to next level ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Chicken Satay : Beautiful chicken skewers with a generous drizzle of tomato based sauce, had nuts too, tasted pretty good ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thai Fish Cake : Simply outstanding, beautiful mix of fish meat and other herbs, shallow fried to perfection and accompanying sauce just makes it so unreal ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Teppanyaki Mixed Seafood : Mix seafood cooked platter had a near miss on the menu description as it wasn't sizzling at all, wouldn't recommend this dish unless Chefs learn how to make teppanyaki or servers should serve straight up when it's sizzling (very dissapointed on this) ⭐⭐
Terriyaki Barramundi : Fish grilled well and cooked beautiful but unfortunately that was spoiled by the taste of thick consistency of extra sweet teri yaki sauce which was off the hook. ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
Stir Fried Garlic beef with pepper : Fantastic saving trail in main course, beef was cooked delicately with all juices sealed and peppery garlicy sauce was spot on, fantastic dish and is a must ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Penang Duck Curry : Duck lovers alert, if you are after Velvet texture of sauce with good slice of roasted duck, then put your money in here and you will get masterpiece, simply outstanding ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
They had decent wine in offering, so we had Chardonnay and Moscato's, suited good taste for the course alongside some Beers.
Highly Recommended to try this place and try the food and friendly service
